TWO analytical methods for calculating the positions of matrix and twin reflections on electron-diffraction patterns of a twinned cubic crystal have recently been published.1,2 Meieran and Richman1 considered the case of twinning on (1 12) in a bcc structure, while a more general treatment, capable of analyzing twinning on any plane in a cubic crystal, was developed by Johari and Thomas.2 The latter authors applied their general rotation matrix to both (111) twinning in face-centered crystals and {112} twinning in body-centered crystals and they derived separate expressions for these two cases. This separate treatment masks the fact that in a holosymmetric cubic crystal a (111) twin is crys-tallographically equivalent to a {112} twin.3 This is analogous to the crystallographic equivalence of rotation and reflection twins in centrosymmetric crys tals. A particularly simple example of this equivalence occurs when the two twin planes are perpendicular to each other—for example (111) and (112). Then, if twinning on (111) moves a point P to a new position P1, and twinning on (112) moves P to P2, P1 and P2 will be related to each other by a 180-deg rotation about [110]— the direction normal to both (111) and (112). Since there are diad axis axis along (110) direction in a holosymmetric cubic crys tal the two positions P1 and P2 must be crystallo-graphically equivalent. In other words if a particular pole (hk l) is in a position P1 after twinning on (Ill), then after twinning on (112) a pole of the type {hkl}—but not the particular pole (hk1)—will also be in the position P1. As a result, when only the general (as opposed to the particular) indices of poles after twinning are required, twinning on (111) gives the same results as twinning on (112). To convert the results for a (111) twin to those applicable to a (112) twin, when the particular (as opposed to the general) indices of poles after twinning are required, all that is necessary is to multiply the indices of the twin poles by the matrix for 180-deg rotation about [lie], i.e., The analytical methods suffer the disadvantage that a new set of calculations must be performed for each different diffraction pattern or, as is done in the Meieran and Richman treatment,1 a lengthy list of the location of the twin spots in reciprocal space must be prepared. All the tedious computation involved in these analytical approaches can be avoided by simply plotting, on tracing paper, a stereographic projection of a crystal twinned on say (112). By superimposing this twin stereogram on a standard (001) projection (preferably with the points and indices in a different color from those on the twin stereogram) the relative positions of both matrix and twin reflections can be determined by inspection. "The copper mining industry in Chile and perhaps in other countries as well is faced with the challenge to implement the best practices in order to achieve a sustainable and more environment-friendly growth. Relationships between mining industry and society have been historically complex due to its environmental impacts. Whereas the ore grade has declined continuously, this has involved an intensive energy and water consumption thus increasing operational costs at different stages of the concentration process. In the case of copper sulphide ore concentration, froth flotation is the main technology used worldwide. The amount of the different chemical reagents used in flotation plants (i.e., collectors, depressants, frothers and modifiers) affects significantly production costs and has a negative effect on the environment as well. The objective of this research work was to evaluate the use of biosolids and their main components (i.e., glucose, proteins and humic substances) as more environment-friendly flotation collectors for chalcopyrite and molybdenite. For this purpose, microflotation tests were conducted in a modified Hallimond tube. In addition, FTIR and zeta potential experiments were performed to investigate the interaction of biosolids with these sulphide minerals. Biosolids and their main components may interact through physical and chemical ways due to different affinities with such sulphide minerals as chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite, which are present in copper sulphide ores. In alkaline pHs, biosolids and their main components make the zeta potential of the sulphide minerals investigated more negative. These results may provide important information concerning the behavior of the main sulphide minerals in the concentration of copper sulphide ores at industrial scale, wherein mill processes could affect their surfaces properties. Therefore, biosolids and their main components may open an opportunity to be used in copper sulphide flotation plants to partially replace conventional reagents, which are more hazardous and less environment-friendly."

A indústria siderúrgica na América do Sul tem sido desafiada desde a crise econômica mundial do final de 2008, como as demais siderúrgicas ao redor do mundo. O cenário de continua degradação das matérias primas, em especial o minério de ferro e a necessidade de reduzir custos, considerando que cerca de 70% do mesmo está relacionado à produção de gusa, atuando em direção oposta, torna este desafio maior ainda. Operar um Alto Forno com elevadas taxas de injeção de carvão (mais que 180 kg/t de gusa) e baixo taxa de combustíveis (menor que 490 kg/t de gusa), considerando a elevação da taxa de geração de escória devido a matéria prima em degradação (~300 kg/t de gusa) torna-se obrigatório ter estabilidade operacional por meio de boas práticas operacionais suportado por adequado sistema de manutenção centrado em confiabilidade (RCM). Este trabalho objetiva mostrar como a ArcelorMittal planta de Tubarão está enfrentando esta situação, visando atingir os objetivos citados anteriormente.

A espectrometria de emissão óptica é uma metodologia de análise de amostras sólidas utilizada pelas indústrias no controle da composição química de seus materiais. Nesta técnica, uma centelha é direcionada à amostra a ser analisada provocando a excitação dos elétrons de seus elementos, seguida pela emissão de radiação que é convertida em concentração química. Um recente avanço obtido nesta área analítica foi o desenvolvimento do sistema PDA/OES (análise de discriminação de pulsos). Esta ferramenta complementa a espectrometria de emissão óptica, permitindo que ela forneça além da composição química da amostra, o seu conteúdo de inclusões não metálicas. Trata-se de um progresso na investigação de inclusões, que atualmente é desempenhada principalmente pelos métodos de microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura. O propósito deste trabalho foi desenvolver uma metodologia de análise de inclusões através da espectrometria de emissão óptica e comparar os resultados obtidos com as técnicas clássicas de microscopia para, assim, possibilitar sua utilização no controle de inclusões durante a fabricação do aço.

1.1 Section 47(1) of the Mine Health and Safety Act, 29 of 1996 (?the MHSA?) establishes a Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate which is administered by the Chief Inspector of Mines. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate is part of the Department of Mineral Resources. The Chief Inspector is appointed by the Minister of Mineral Resources (see section 48(1) of the MHSA). 1.2 The Chief Inspector must, amongst other things, ensure that the provisions of the MHSA are complied with and enforced, and that all the duties imposed upon the Chief Inspector and the other Inspectors of Mines in terms of the MHSA and any other law are performed. The Chief Inspector of Mines must appoint Principal Inspectors of Mines and Inspectors of Mines to assist him/her to discharge his/her duties (see section 49(1)(a) and (c) of the MHSA).

Certain types of macromolecules added to water and salt solutions flowing in turbulent motion can reduce the pressure gradient. Alternatively, the volumetric capacity of a pipe for these fluids is increased by the presence of these materials. Examples presented show that the drag reduction can become significant. Thus, the presence of 0.28 per cent of a gum derivative in a solution of sodium chloride flowing at 200 gal/min in a 1.89-in. pipe yields a pressure drop which is 0.44 of the single-phase drop measured under the same conditions of turbulent flow; the addition of 0.1 per cent of a vinyl derivative to a I-in. water line yields a throughput capacity which is 1.78 of the single-phase capacity at the same pressure drop. It is further shown that these phenomena are distinctly different from previous observations with other classes of non-Newtonian systems. There a simple lowering of friction factors below the levels predicted from the resistance laws for Newtonian fluids is associated with a suppression of turbulent motion. A rational physical explanation for drag reduction is advanced. Briefly, the proposed mechanism is a storage by the molecular elastic elements of the macromolecules in solution of the kinetic energy of the turbulent motion. INTRODUCTION This study was inspired by a recent review of some paradoxical drag reduction phenomena in turbulent pipe f1ow.I Under very moderate conditions of turbulent flow, the pressure gradient necessary to pump solutions containing certain specific kinds of polymers, fibers and metallic soaps may become appreciably lower than that required* to pump the solvent, i.e., water or a low-viscosity hydrocarbon, under identical flow rates in the same conduit. As shown by our review, this phenomenon of drag reduction in turbulent duct flow was first noted during the second world war, apparently arising in connection with the development of flame warfare weapons. Since that time several papers illustrating this phenomenon have appeared: Toms, Oldroyd,3 Agoston et al., Bundrant and Matthews, Robertson and Mason,6 Ousterhout and Hall,7 Daily and Bugliarello~ Lummus, Anderson, and Fox. 9 That there are practical applications for techniques which increase discharge or decrease the pressure necessary to transport a liquid through a pipeline is illustrated in the patents which have issued which take advantage of this peculiar phenomenon, e.g., Mysels,l0 Dever, Harbour, and Seifert.11 One also finds fragmentary evidence of this effect in the data pertaining to a few of the polymeric solutions studied by Shaver12 and Dodge.13 However, these investigators were concerned with the development of friction factor vs Reynolds number correlations for a variety of non-Newtonian solutions and suspensions, rather than in a study of drag reduction-. A similar kind of drag reduction effect has been observed in gases. Sproull, for example, reports that adding dust to air flowing in turbulent motion through a pipe results in a lowering of the pressure gradient at identical flow rates. There are also military applications for reducing the drag on hydrodynamic vehicles. For example, the possibility of injecting a rheologically complex fluid into the boundary layers of bodies to reduce the skin friction has been investigated by Fabulal5 and Granville.16 Along somewhat different lines are the drag reduction studies of Kramer.17118 He has shown that skin friction can be reduced by covering the surface of a vehicle with a flexible skin. The effect is apparently due to the boundary layer being stabilized by the presence of the skin. Drag reduction by means of coexisting gas and liquid boundary layers, e.g., film boiling and continuous gas injection, has been proposed by Bradfield, Barkdoll, and Byrne,19 Cess and Sparrow,20'21 Sparrow, Jonsson, and Eckert.22 Here the skin friction occurs between a vapor and a surface rather than between a liquid and a surface. There are several references in the literature to friction-factor correlations for non-Newtonian solutions and suspensions: Shaver and Merri11,23 Dodge and Metzner, Clapp,25 and Thomas.26

The Cadia Valley Operations currently hosts a large operational open pit, a large operational sublevel caving underground mine and two other underground projects at the study stage. This scenario creates an unusual situation for the evaluation and planning of a fifth major open pit project. The Cadia East Open Pit is a large gold-copper development located adjacent to the operational open pit and above one of the underground projects. A study team is conducting a comprehensive and robust analysis of the target orebody. Two key factors for this project include the existing and planned projects within the valley and the wide range of available mining methods. The aim for the study team is to present an optimal and practical case which suits the entire Cadia Valley Operation. A rigorous and robust analysis of the situation requires that each factor be properly evaluated. A modular system has been developed which allows the wide range of scenarios to be quickly and meaningfully considered. Sensitivities for each module drive the further development of that particular module. As each scenario progresses, an assessment is made evaluating its value, strategic value and practicality. In such a way, the number of scenarios is gradually reduced at each stage to produce a final short list of feasible cases. Each scenario on the shortlist is then assessed with regard to the existing operations and other projects. A qualitative and quantitative analysis is made. This ranking is used to provide the recommended case.

The Atlas Concentrator, reputedly the largest in the Far East today, is located on the island of Cebu in the Republic of the Philippines. It started operation on a 4000 TPD capacity in 1955. An expansion program, coupled with significant improvements both in the Crushing Plant and the Mil, made the Atlas Concentrator what it is today, treating about 14,000 tons of ore per day at a comparatively low cost of about $0.50 per ton treated. The Atlas Copper Mine is at present mainly an open pit operation, with ore supplied from two pits (Lutopan and Biga) north of the Concen¬trator. Development of an Underground Mine, situated on the main ore body at Lutopan, which will be a block caving operation, has been underway since 1963, and this underground mining operation is expected to b e in full production by the latter part of 1966.

This paper, describing the milling operations of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Balmat, N. Y., is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on practice at various mills in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The company also operates a mine end mill at Edwards, 12 miles northeast of Balmat. Mining practice in the district, as exemplified at the Edwards mine, is described in another information circular of the Bureau of Mines.3 The writer gratefully acknowledges the generous cooperation of the company officials which made this investigation possible, and wishes to thank R. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a thin-film X-ray fluorescence technique to rapidly determine Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, and Cr in super alloy leach liquors. Total analysis time per sample was less than 15 min, as opposed to several hours for traditional wet chemical methods. Precision and accuracy were checked by replicate analyses of solutions similar in composition to leach liquors, whose analyte concentrations were well known. Coefficients of variation for all elements were found to be less than 2 pet. With the exception of the results for Fe, all relative errors of estimation were also found to be less than 2 pet. Bulk liquids are not introduced into the spectrometer; thus, the potential for damage to the instrument by leakage of corrosive liquids is eliminated.

"It is well known that frothers affect the amount of water that is transferred to the froth, which has an effect on both the froth stability and the water recovery. On the other hand, since non-selective recovery by entrainment is directly related to water recovery, it can be said that frothers have an indirect effect on flotation selectivity. Recent research on this subject has shown that the non-selective recovery by entrainment, which is characterized by the entrainment factor, is frother dependent. In other words, the entrainment factor is not unique, but depends on frother type.Having different entrainment factors implies that for the same water recovery, the amount of undesired particles reporting to the concentrate may vary if one changes the frother type, which suggests, as a possible explanation, that it is not only the amount of water in the froth what is affected by frother type, but also the froth structure.The purpose of the current work is to study the effect of frother type on foam structure (two phase froth). A quasi-2D cell operated with a slot sparger was used to study the foam structure in the presence of three different frothers: Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol (MIBC), OrePrep®549, and Octanol at the same gas flow rate and reagent dosage. The foam structure was studied using image analysis, and an algorithm based on textural analysis was developed to classify the foams. The results show that it is possible to classify foams according to the frother used, which proves that frothers have an effect on the foam structure.INTRODUCTIONFrothers are usually dosed paying attention to froth stability, condition that is commonly estimated by sight, according to the operator's criteria and experience. This happens because there is not an established procedure or technique for frother characterization, generating qualitative descriptions such as “powerful” or “selective” frothers, which lack of scientific thoroughness and remain under subjective factors. Nevertheless, several works have been done in this line of research. Moyo et al. (2007) classified frothers based on their water-carrying capacity, proving that this characteristic is related with gas holdup and frother type. Previously, Trahar (1981) had related water recovery and gangue particles recovery, defining the entrainment value (ENT). Nowadays it is known that entrainment affects both hydrophilic and hydrophobic because it is not a selective process. In the last decade some studies (for example the one of Konopacka and Drzymala (2010)) delved into different entrainment behaviours dependent mainly on the flotation type (batch or continuous, agitated or columnar, etc.), but there were no studies on the effect of frother type regarding entrainment, since Rahal et al. (2001) argued that the ENT factor was independent of the frother type and concentration, and froth height."

Pyrite ore is one of the main raw materials in the production of sulfuric acid. For a long time, the raw material containing the pyrite, which is used to produce sulfuric acid, generally contains S only 32%~45%. A plenty of residue from the sulfuric acid production contains 40%~50% Fe and 1%~2% S. Some of the residue also contains Cu, Pb, Zn and other harmful elements like As, thus it pollutes environment seriously and is solid waste. The research on comprehensive utilization of the residue has been made by many scholars. Through the study, the residue can only be used to pro-duce iron concentrate and the iron oxide red pigment. But because of the complex techniques, the low recovery, the low grade of iron concentrate , high sulfur in iron concentrate, causing second waste residue and the environmental pollution, the residue is mainly used as an accessory material in the production of cement, and is of a low value. Therefore, the iron resource in pyrite has not been used efficiently until now. In the paper, the flotation condition test, the flotation open circuit test and the flotation closed circuit test to produce high-purity pyrite concentrate with the low-grade pyrite ore in oceanic ore deposit have been carried on. Flotation reagent scheme of sulfuric acid used as activator and butyl xanthate as collector is determined. After four times depth cleaning, high-purity pyrite concentrate containing 52.82% S, 44.29% Fe, and only 2.89% impurities has been obtained. The S recovery is 99.13%, and the Fe recovery is 96.00% in the high-purity pyrite concentrate. The oxidizing roasting depth desulfurization experiment of the high-purity pyrite concentrate has been conducted. The results show that the Fe grade in the residue obtained is 68.58%, the content of S is 0.25%, the content of P is 0.0084%, the content of As is 0.0065%. The residue is a kind of high-quality iron-smelting raw material. Based on the above experiments, the industrial experiments on producing high-purity pyrite concentrate with the low-grade pyrite ore, and producing sulfuric acid and iron concentrate with high-purity pyrite concentrate have been done. The results indicate that the high-purity pyrite concentrate with the S grade of 51.24%, the Fe grade of 44.15% has been obtained. The iron concentrate obtained with 65.73% Fe and 0.23% S is a sort of high-quality iron-smelting raw material applied to the production of steel and iron smelting. Through the experimental study, the sulfur and iron resources in the pyrite ore have been recovered and utilized efficiently.

Keywords: residues, fluorides, chlorides, zinc, steel mill dust The recyclability of various nonferrous metal wastes often suffers from a relatively high fluorine and chlorine content. Both are inserted in most cases by the use of plastic contaminated scrap and a wide variety of different coatings. These halogens lead to poor product qualities and off gas contamination. Especially the history of zinc recovery from steel mill dusts shows, that the today common hydrometallurgical options are on their limit and therefore are not sufficient in most cases. This thermochemical study should give more information about different pyrometallurgical options, that offer both a chlorine and fluorine reduction and efficient zinc recovery, preferably in one process step. Selective evaporation in different atmospheres and conversion with the use of hydrogen are the main parts in this study. The results combined with the relatively small information available from literature should provide a basis for further investigations in this field.

Rock mass discontinuity mapping plays a crucial role in developing a reliable Discrete Fracture Network (DFN), providing insights into the distribution of geometrical and mechanical properties of discontinuities. This enables an accurate assessment of geotechnical infrastructure and mining excavations. Data obtained through conventional mapping approaches are substantially limited by factors such as accessibility and subjectivity. Moreover, these conventional methods may pose inherent risks due to manual techniques, exposing practitioners to potential dangers. Recent digital developments in remote surveying techniques offer opportunities for safer and more reliable rock mass discontinuity surveys. These technologies allow extensive three-dimensional surveying and the production of high-resolution 3D surface models, applicable at any time. This paper presents a workflow for digital discontinuity mapping employing drone technology and photogrammetry. Additionally, the capabilities and challenges of applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the rock mass discontinuity characterisation process are discussed.

This paper discussed a combined froth flotation and high pressure leaching (HPL) process to recover copper from mine tailings. At first, froth flotation were carried out using the mine tailings sample under various conditions in the presence of different pH (3.5-10) and sulfurizing reagent value (0-1000 g/t), respectively. As a result, optimum condition (sulfurizing reagent of 1000 g/t, pH of 10, PAX (collector) of 100 g/t and MIBC (frother) of 200 g/t) was found for froth flotation of copper. The effects of sulphuric acid concentration, leaching temperature, total pressure (steam pressure plus oxygen pressure) on high pressure leaching (HPL) of mine tailing were investigated using sulphuric acid solution in the presence of oxygen. The best conditions for HPL were obtained to be sulphuric acid concentration: 0 mol/L (water), leaching temperature: 170 ?, total pressure: 2 MPa, leaching time: 1 hr and pulp density: 100 g/L. The leaching rate of copper reached nearly 99 % and the concentration of copper in pregnant leach solution (PLS) was 0.24 g/L. Finally, copper in the mine tailing was recovered using froth flotation followed by HPL. As a result of a combined froth flotation and HPL, the vast majority of copper (99 %) from the mine tailings was extracted.

"The kinetics of boron removal from liquid silicon during slag refining, as a process step in the production of solar grade silicon, has been investigated by means of small scale mass transfer experimental series at 1600°C, using a graphite crucible. The slags were SiO2-CaO based, with or without addition of approx. 19 wt% MgO. Experiments were carried out at slag-metal ratios of 1 or 2, where the silicon initially contained approx. 250 ppm boron. The metal-slag mass transfer coefficients for boron were found to be in the order of 1-3 · 10-6 m/s and were largely influenced by slag composition. The mass transfer rate was higher for the MgO-containing slag than the slags without MgO. The final equilibrium distribution of boron between metal and slag, LB, was determined to be in the order of 2.3-3.3.I. INTRODUCTIONRecent years have seen a race in industry and research aimed at obtaining a reliable metallurgical route for production of silicon for solar cells (SoG-Si) from metallurgical grade (MG) silicon. Metallurgical routes can successfully challenge the traditional chemical routes for production of SoG-Si if they generate metal of sufficient purity while being less expensive in terms of production cost and energy consumption. Efficient removal of boron is one of the greatest obstacles in the refining of silicon by a metallurgical route, because the segregation coefficient of boron in silicon makes directional solidification unfeasible; in addition, the vapour pressure of boron is not high enough for removal by vacuum refining. However, the thermodynamic properties of boron makes removal from silicon by oxidation possible, and thus the process of slag refining of silicon has been receiving increasing attention as a method for boron removal."

"Darcy’s law has been used extensively to model cake filtration. It is a macroscopic model, in which particle size dominates the kinetics and cake moisture. In the present work, a capillary flow model has been developed from first principles to study the effects of microscopic parameters such as capillary radius, boundary layer slip, disjoining pressure, and surface tension that may be important for dewatering ultrafine particles. Laboratory-scale pressure filtration tests show that dewatering kinetics is strongly dependent on capillary radius, which in turn is influenced by surface hydrophobicity, surface charge, and length scales of particles. The model parameters determined from laboratory-scale filtration tests show that use of a hydrophobizing reagent can greatly improve fine particle filtration due to increased slip and decreased capillary pressure. The kinetics of dewatering kaolin clay is fastest at a pH where the layer-structured particles coagulate with a face-to-edge orientation. The capillary flow model developed in the present work may be useful for designing filters and optimizing operating conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn 2014, Canada produced 2.2 million barrels per day of crude oil from the oil sands resources in Alberta, which is expected to grow to 3.2–4.0 million barrels per day by 2030 (CAPP, 2013). One of the challenges to meeting these projections is the tailings management. At present, the industry uses ?77 km2 of the lands to construct tailings ponds. Significant amounts of the tailings disposed to the ponds are silts and clays that are slow to settle and consolidate, creating problems for reclamation. It is, therefore, the objective of the present work to develop a filtration model that may be useful for developing advanced dewatering technologies that can address the tailings management issues.Darcy’s equation is the governing law for filtration. It was derived as an empirical model by H. Darcy in 1856 while he was studying fluid flow in sand filters (Hall, 1956). Since then, many investigators derived it from first principles. It relates superficial fluid velocity to the pressure drop across a porous medium of known permeability. In filtration, the latter can be related empirically to particle size using the Kozney equation (Yoon, 2005)."

"IntroductionOne of the problems which the coal-mining industry must solve in the next few years is the redaction of its ever-increasing timber bill. This includes pit posts, mine tees, timber sets, and brattice boards. As an example of this increase, the following table of timber prices from the records of a coal company in western Pennsylvania, in a district where the supply of most of the different kinds of timber used can be shipped from points within the State, is self-explanatory: Present conditions seem to indicate the continued upward trend ox the cost of mine timber, although the regrettable calamity that has visited the chestnut timber in Pennsylvania may temporarily hold the price of some types of mine timber on a level basis. On account of the chestnut blight, many farmers will undoubtedly begin to convert their chestnut trees into timber before they become a total loss. This may provide, for the time being, a sufficient supply of mine timber to check the steadily rising prices.The local lumber producers are turning their attention to the production of the larger sizes of timber and lumber on account of an unfavorable price on mine ties. From the foregoing table, it is seen that the average advance in the price of ties during the period 1914 to 1920 is 52 per cent, while timber sets and mine car plank increased in value 60 per cent. Amore striking illustration is the fact that a 6 by 8 inch by 6 foot tie sells for 42 cents or at the rate of $17.50 per 1000 board feet; yet mine car plank and timber sets have a value of $48 per 1000 feet, an advantage of $30.50 in favor of the heavier timber.The supply of coal in Western and Central Pennsylvania will last for a long period and it is for the possible future demand for timber that the coal companies must provide. While steel, concrete, and other materials may, in many cases, prove an acceptable substitute, there is no doubt that timber will always be in demand."
