Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred at various times in several working districts of Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W.They have occurred in headings only, under both hand and mechanised conditions, and with seam gas ranging from mainly methane to nearly pure carbon dioxide. A modification of inducer shotfiring using a shear cut was introduced in 1955, and in 1961 full face firing both to a machine cut shear and off the solid was introduced. The current series of outbursts -1961 to 1963 - has been induced under these systems with full control of the time of outburst, but without prediction, and with some disappointing production features.Various aspects of current conditions and practices at Metropolitan are considered singular, such as the coarse granulometry of outburst coal, the prevalence of floor heave, the absence of strong structures at outburst sites, the possibility of outburst at any stage in pillar formation up to the last few yards, the effect of rate of advance on outburst occurrence, and the mildness of many outbursts experienced.It is concluded that inducer shotfiring is a reliable control but it suffers by comparison with outburst-free conditions, and that control by preyention would be preferable.INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas has been described in detail previously (Hargraves, 1958). Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of MSc thesis This paper investigates the effects of thiol collectors: xanthates, dithiophosphates, dithiocarbamates and mixtures of these on the froth flotation performance obtained with a bornite-rich copper sulphide ore from Okiep Copper Mine with a feed grade of 1.8%copper. Batch flotation tests were used to assess the performance in terms of mass-water recovery, sulphur grade-recovery and copper grade-recovery relationships and the Klimpel rate constant for copper recovery. The results showed that the di-ethyl-dithiocar-bamate (di C2-DTC) was the weakest collector of copper sulphide minerals. Highest copper recoveries were obtained with the di-ethyl-dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP), which were accompanied with more watery froths and lower copper grades demonstrating frothing properties in addition to collector action. Superior copper recoveries were obtained with the 90% ethyl xanthate (C2-X):10% di-ethyl-dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP) and 90% ethyl xanthate (C2-X):10%di-ethyl-dithiocarbamate (di C2-DTC) collector mixtures compared to that obtained with ethyl xanthate at an equivalent collector dosage of 0.139 mol/ton ore (a dosage equivalent to 20 g sodium ethyl xanthate per ton ore). A superior copper grade was obtained with the 90% ethyl xanthate: 10% di-ethyl-dithiocarbamate collector mixture at a dosage of 0.0695 mol/ton ore compared to that obtained with ethyl xanthate at the same equivalent dosage. The Thor lake deposit is a world class resource of rare earth (REE) metals and minerals in Canada. Development work to optimize a REE mineral recovery process flow sheet is underway, however, given the ore mineralogy; the developed reagent scheme is relatively complex. As part of a research project, micro flotation tests were conducted on a feed sample in order to examine factors affecting stream partitioning. SEM-EDX was performed to evaluate variability in grain composition between streams (concentrate and tails) and TOF-SIMS surface analysis was used to determine statistically significant differences in surface species particularly related to potential activation (or depression) of the examined mineral phases. SEM-EDX analysis reveal that the concentrate has a significantly higher proportion of REE bearing grains (carbonates and phosphates) relative to the tail (almost none were identified). Spectral fingerprinting by TOF-SIMS has allowed for the identification of all reagent species investigated. Reagent signal intensity discrimination on test stream mineral surfaces was observed by the TOF-SIMS analysis using reagents at plant concentration levels. TOF-SIMS analysis confirmed that REE bearing grains reporting to the concentrate are doing so in response to collector attachment whereas grains reporting to the tail are doing so in response to a lack of collector and/or in combination with the presence of the depressant. The surface analysis of gangue phases reveal a similar reagent discrimination; the signal intensity of collector species was significantly higher on the concentrate samples relative to the tails while depressant species were significantly enriched on the surface of the gangue phases in the tail samples. A detailed evaluation of the surface species representing the various reagents used in flotation scheme revealed a distinct competitive relationship between two of the reagents. The surface analysis identified that when used in concurrently, there appears to be a negative feedback resulting in a significant reduction in loading for several of the collectors on grains reporting to the concentrate. Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC-arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC-arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilization and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be thevehicle to drive performance in the short-term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development. Constraints on pore water evolution in the aquifers of a sedimentary basin may be realised through stable isotope analyses of present day waters, and their comparison with water compositions calculated to have been in isotope equilibrium with the products of diagenesis during burial. Integrated with detailed petrographic observations, and thermal, structural and stratigraphic analyses, fluid migration patterns at various stages in a basin's history can be identified. This has important implications for modelling basin hydrology, hydrocarbon distribution, and reservoir quality in the Latrobe Group, Gippsland Basin, and oil-prone successions Elsewhere.

Neither the copper orebodies nor the zinc-lead-silver orebodies at Mount Isa were formed syntectonically as has been claimed for the last 20 and 10 years respectively. Both orebody types were cogenetic, coeval, and formed early during the sedimentation and diagenesis of the host formation. The copper orebodies are interpreted as having formed diagenetically at hand specimen scale, syngenetically at formation scale. The zinc-lead-silver orebodies are interpreted as having formed primarily by sedimentary means at both hand specimen and formation scales.

Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.

This paper provides an update to a paper by the author on an overseas explorer's perception of New Zealand, presented at the 1997 New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. New Zealand has one of the most open and internationally competitive economies in the world. The petroleum exploration industry in New Zealand is booming with a record number of wells planned for 2000. New Zealand is keen to encourage investment in mineral exploration to develop its natural resources. A study of the geological potential of New Zealand estimated the value of known and potential resources of metals at $86 billion. Gold has the greatest potential, with a total resource estimated at $33.5 billion. The price of gold has averaged NZ$554 since the beginning of 1998, and NZ$593 in the last year, which is very competitive with other countries. An assessment of country risk compared New Zealand with twenty other countries in ten risk categories: sovereign risk, land access, environmental issues, land claims, mining legislation, social risk, infrastructure, civil unrest, natural disasters and workforce. New Zealand ranked fifth, showing it has low country risk. This provides a high degree of certainty for investment, which is important for the perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination. Corruption was considered separately, and New Zealand ranked third out of ninety countries, showing it is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. New Zealand has a favourable business environment, good geological potential, low country risk and no corruption. Despite this, New Zealand has not registered on the radar screens of overseas mineral explorers, and the positive factors appear to have been overlooked. New Zealand has considerable undeveloped mineral potential, and with the current rise in commodity prices, it is hoped New Zealand can participate in a resurgence in mineral exploration.

The approach improves upon existing safety programs by suggesting actionable, locally sensitive solutions that prioritize higher-order controls such as hazard engineering interventions and administrative controls. This study contributes to enhanced worker safety, efficient environmental restoration, and engagement in marginalized communities with abandoned mine lands.

The separation of rare earth elements is a complex process that is industrially carried out using liquid/liquid extraction. Detailed flow sheets of solvent extraction plants for the separation of rare earth elements are rarely available in the literature which limits the opportunity to teach and test the application of data reconciliation, process optimization and control to these types of plants. The basis of a simulator for a rare earth elements separation plant is described in this paper. The simulator is used to adjust the organic phase and stripping acid flow rate in a separation circuit of heavy rare earth elements from light one?s.

Tellurium (Te), a critical mineral for solar energy technologies, faces supply risk challenges that drive the development of diversified and robust production routes. This research focused on improving Te enrichment from copper tailings (CT) produced from copper porphyry (CP) ores processing, addressing the loss of ~90% of Te minerals to tailings in the flotation process of CP ores. Gravity separation and froth flotation processes were used as possible enrichment routes of Te-bearing minerals (i.e., pyrite) in CT. In the froth flotation process, synergistic combinations of reagents were tested to achieve an acceptable enrichment ratio of Te minerals. Comprehensive characterization analyses showed significant Te enrichment in the flotation concentrates. Tellurium was recovered at 90%, while the grade of Te in the concentrates was 1.4 ppm using a xanthate collector and glycol frother compared to <0.5 ppm in the flotation feed. Findings showed that Te-minerals’ enrichment was also feasible in CT using the proposed combined concentrations routes (i.e., gravity separation followed by froth flotation) by looking at Fe, Cu, and S enrichment. This study also highlighted the importance of understanding the deportment of Te minerals in different process streams to develop and optimize efficient enrichment practices.

Very few of those occupied in pursuits other than mining have any conception of the extent of boring operations that have been carried out on the gold and coal fields of Victoria, or of the valuable and definite knowledge obtainable by such means. The subject comprises various branches, which it will be necessary to describe in detail. The three main divisions are The Administrative, which includes all financial work and general management. The Professional, dealing with topographical and geological work necessary before any scheme of boring can be laid out, the preparation of plans, the inspection of cores obtained from bore holes, the examination of diamonds, etc. The Mechanical Branch, dealing with the drilling machinery, setting of diamonds, maintenance of stores, etc. In 1877, the Goverpment of Victoria decided to assist in prospecting the mineral resources of the colony by the aid of diamond drill boring, and for that purpose, a vote of &#163;5,000 was passed, with which were purchased three diamond dulls, an American type being adopted.

During World War II the shortage of ore revived interest in eastern iron deposits, among which -!2..c "Ile Massachusetts and Connecticut limonites. The Cheever mine, in the Richmond-Salisbury area of Massachusetts, was formerly a large producer of limonite ere. The Bureau of Mines investigated the lateral and downward extensions of the Cheever ore body, which was mined from about 1850 to 1892, by ap open cut 1,000 feet long and also by underground workings. even holes aggregating 1,723 feet, were drilled by the Bureau during the winter of 1943-44. They comprised three diamond-core drill holes, two churn-drill holes, and two rotary-drill holes. A geophysical survey of the Cheever mine area and adjoining ground was made in conjunction with the drilling program. Although this survey did not locate the limonite ore beds, the data were of considerable assistance in locating the limestone contact which forms the footwall of the ore beds. Drilling disclosed two beds of limonite with a heavy overburden of glacial till.

Rehabilitation challenges were met nearly two months ahead of contract schedule for the Design-Build, Fast Track Scituate Aqueduct & Tunnel project in Cranston, Rhode Island. The aqueduct and tunnel were built in the 1920s and consisted of three sections—a 2.3 m diameter reinforced concrete section that extends approximately305 m before it transitions to a horseshoe-shaped 2.3 m wide by 2.1 m high cast-in-place concrete tunnel that continues for approximately 5.3 km until it transitions back to a 2.3 m circular section that extends approximately 1.9 km to the end of this project. Major repairs were required to assure sustained operation of this water supply tunnel.

THE Wonthaggi coal-field lies south easterly from Melbourne at a distance by rail of 86 miles, on the flats of the Powlett River, immediately to the south of the deep-cut valleys and steep intervening ridges in the Jurassic rocks of the Bass Range and itsfoot-hills. The coal-bearing area is covered with a thin layer of late Tertiary and Recent deposits, which serve to mask the true character of the underlying coal-bearing rocks and effectually prevent the appearance of any coal outcrop. Two or three bores sunk prior to 1890 had shown the locality to be really a potential coal-bearing one. Only one additional bore was sunk in the State Coal Mine area until 1908, when energetic boring was resumed, with the result that in November, 1909, when an acute shortage of black coal in Victoria resulted from the prolonged strike on the New South Wales coal-fields, coal-seams had been located at Wonthaggi offering sufficient inducement to start an...

BHP Billiton, in collaboration with Sodern and CSIRO, has developed a downhole logging tool for measuring geochemistry in situ. The FastGradeTM 100 (alternatively, FG100), exploits pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis (PFTNA) to analyse the rock. This method is based on the detection and measurement of characteristic gamma rays emitted from isotopes in the material that become briefly radioactive when they are bombarded with neutrons. The tool outputs raw spectra arising from three types of neutron interaction, namely, inelastic scattering, neutron capture and neutron activation, which occur in successive time-windows (Smith et al, 2015). The spectra contain peaks at specific energies that are characteristic of the different elements interacting with the neutrons, the gamma count of which is related to elemental concentration. BHP Billiton uses in-house data processing software to convert the measured spectra to elemental concentrations.Much work has been done to understand the tool response under a wide variety of environmental and operating conditions, including logging speed, borehole rugosity, the presence of cavities, water etc. Effort has also been directed at understanding and quantifying the current sources of error in our conventional assays due to sample collection, preparation, and laboratory instrumentation in order to use this information as a baseline to compare against the FastGradeTM 100 results.To date, the FastGradeTM 100 primary use has been as a verification tool (JORC, 2012). However, beyond this, it has considerable potential to improve productivity in both exploration and production environments due to its ability to provide geologists with assay results soon after a hole is drilled.This paper presents initial test work and tool performance, including accuracy and precision under various conditions. Mining education has received almost continuous discussion since its inception and most people engaged in the mining industry and in mining education feel at some time the urge and necessity to express their views. This paper is not a comprehensive survey of past and present practices and accepted principles, but a personal opinion of the form mining education should take at university level. It is expressed because of a dissatisfaction with the existing courses offered to students. It is hoped to provoke discussionand bring forth guidance to those engaged in mining education. After all, students spend four or five years at a university and it is desirable that the graduate should be something more than just those many years older at the end of his course.POST GRADUATE EMPLOYMENTThe first problem confronting the university should, be to discover what the mining industry wants and expects or graduates. This must influence the university course and yet universities have done little to seek this information, and if suggestions have been offered by industry; universities appear to have made little use of them. University mining curricula are basically what they were 50, 100 and even 200 years ago. (See Appendix.) The Nchanga Cu-Co ore deposit of the Zambian Copperbelt, is hosted in Neoproterozoic siliciclastic-carbonate sedimentary rocks, and it consists of two orebodies: the Lower Orebody (shale) and the Upper Orebody (arkose). Refractory Cu ores present in the Upper Orebody comprise 150 Mt with average 0.87% Cu, and are characterized by inadequate recovery of copper by leaching. This materials characterization study, conducted on refractory ore samples from the Upper Orebody using optical microscopy, QEMSCAN®, and microprobe, has shown that copper occurs mainly in biotite, phlogopite, malachite, pseudomalachite and goethite. QEMSCAN® has quantified the abundance of each phase and total Cu deportment in each phase.

In common with general experience in the iron-making industry overseas, Australia has in recent years suffered a deterioration in the physical quality of her iron ores in their suitability as a direct blast furnace feed. The increasing amounts of fines and the more friable nature of lump ore, especially in the ore from the Cockatoo Island deposits in Yampi Sound, Western Australia, have focused attention on problems of ore preparation and agglomeration, particularly sintering.Although very small pilot scale Dwight-Lloyd type sinter machines were operated at the steel-making centres at Newcastle and Port Kembla during World War II, no sizeable capacity was installed, so that ore was charged to the blast furnaces almost entirely unscreened, and the resultant flue dust was stockpiled.Towards the close of the war, the pilot plant at Newcastle was replaced by a small machine, adjacent to the flue dust stockpile, with a rated capacity of some 20 tons per hour. After approximately five months of part-time operation, this plant was closed down in January, 1945. Production was not resumed until December, 1950, when, due to a temporary ore shortage, it was decided to supplement available ore with sinter produced from the large flue dust stocks of about 300,000 tons. In spite of mechanical and process difficulties, inherent to the design of the plant, operation was continued on a two-shift basis, with several shutdowns for extensive overhaul and plant alterations, until September, 1954, when production was put on a three-shift basis. Backfilling increases the stability of underground stopes and may help reduce the environmental footprint from the mining operation. The barricades holding the backfill in place must be designed to prevent failure based on the total and effective stress states, which depend on fill properties, stope geometry, and filling rate. This paper presents results from a numerical study aimed at analyzing the stress states associated with the response of paste backfill following stope filling, with an emphasis on the short term behavior. The simulations illustrate how stresses evolve with backfill drainage and filling rate in a vertical stope.
