This study focuses on the amosite mining region in South Africa and associated health effects, compared to other mined asbestos fiber types. Historically, dust and fiber levels were high in the amosite mills and mines, and many miners and members of the surrounding communities were exposed to the fibers. Research has shown that amosite produces both benign and malignant disease. Nevertheless, the mesotheliomagenic potential of amosite is several fold lower than crocidolite. The risk of disease associated with amosite exposure is difficult to quantify. Reasons for this include the scarcity of available information, including fiber measurements, and case ascertainment, as well as the juxtaposition of the amosite and crocidolite asbestos seams in South Africa. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the "two flow drawdown" technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

The overburden slusher (OS) is proposed as a stripping tool that is expected to find application in overburden stripping operations including open cut coal and oil shale mines. OS is expected to combat the effects of increasing depth on the productivity of conventional dragline stripping.Although previously developed stripping techniques have included the use of drag scrapers the OS is sufficiently different as to constitute a new stripping method.A study undertaken at the University of Queensland during 1985 is believed to be the first major study on the use of the OS and preliminary economic results are very encouraging. It appears that the OS has the capacity to remove overburden at a cheaper unit cost than the equivalent powered dragline stripping machine at any comparable depth of overburden. The OS is not adversely affected by increasing stripping depth to the same extent as a dragline. In addition, the action of the OS machine allows for the lowering of spoil face angles, thereby reducing spoil slope stability problems encountered in deep open cut strip mines.

"During the period June 2007 to March 2007, John Starkey of Starkey & Associates (Starkey) worked in Russia for High River Gold, supervising the engineering design work that was being done at the IRGIREDMET Research Institute, in Irkutsk Russia. The work entailed moving the Newmont No. 4 mill from Elko, Nevada to Berezitovy, a mine site north and west of the city of Skovorodino, in the Amur Region of Siberia. This was a grass roots project and required construction of all phases of the infrastructure and process facilities that are associated with a 5000 t/d open pit mine and CIP mill.During the course of this engineering design exercise, many aspects of doing business in Russia were encountered, with regard to laws, norms, and business practices. This paper discusses many of these findings. Also by living in Irkutsk, many observations on Russian life and social customs were made and these merit discussion from a general interest point of view.Prior to going to Russia, another engineering and ore testing firm (TOMS) had approached Starkey to find out if Starkey could assist them in upgrading their SAG ore testing procedures to Western standards in order to offer their clients turnkey projects, that included reliable SAG and AG grinding. TOMS was aware that Starkey had invented the SPI test but did not know that the SAGDesign test had by then been fully developed and was being offered commercially as the most accurate way in the world to design new grinding mills. They were also unaware that this new testing method had been patented by Outokumpu (now Outotec) and that this method allowed them access to a design method, through Starkey, that would lead to a manufacturer’s guarantee (by Outotec) of throughput and grind for any new semi-autogenous or autogenous grinding circuit, with or without ball mills.When Starkey started working at IRGIREDMET in June 2005, they also made a request to add a design method for SAG mills that would be considered acceptable to Western clients. From these requests, presentations were made in Russian to both institutes and each decided to join the SAGDesign Consulting Group as satellite members and buy a SAGDesign test mill to use with their Bond Ball Mill Work Index mills, to provide SAGDesign testing services. To complete the service, contracts have been put in place for Starkey to use these results to design new grinding equipment and to train engineers at TOMS and IRGIREDMET how to do this work.Starkey also undertook to train engineers at both labs to go into the field and to take the samples for SAGDesign testing programs. It is here where the SAGDesign testing service upgrades other grinding test programs because the samples to be used for design are professionally chosen, and the results will be much more likely to produce a satisfactory design. Starkey is a mining engineer and is uniquely qualified to do this task. This and the SAGDesign test are the key components that lead Outotec to offer a performance guarantee for mills designed by Starkey."

Vertical expansion of existing structures frequently requires foundation retrofitting to enhance the capacity of existing foundations for supporting additional loads. Owing to their small diameter, a variety of suitable drilling methods available for installation, and smaller installation equipment capable of operating under limited headroom conditions, micropiles are often preferred for foundation retrofitting. This paper presents a case history demonstrating application of micropiles to underpin the existing foundation of the Washington D.C. Children?s National Medical Center (CNMC) for its future expansion. Located at 111 Michigan Avenue in northwest Washington, DC, portions of the hospital currently extend five stories above grade and three levels below-grade as parking garages. The hospital intends to expand the surgical wing up to the current build out (five stories) above the remaining portion of the existing parking garage. The original foundations consist of 80-ton Raymond Step-Tapered piles. New loading on the foundations required each Raymond pile to be capable of supporting 150 tons. Results from quick load tests on existing piles indicated that two entire column lines (Column Line A and B) would experience loads beyond their capacity, requiring enhancement of the existing foundation at these locations. The design and construction of the foundation upgrading work was particularly challenging due to various project constraints related to a high groundwater table, micropile installation under limited head room, and ensuring that the parking garage remained fully operational for the entire duration of construction. The paper presents the challenges faced during testing of existing foundations amid a high groundwater table, design developments of underpinning options to support the additional column loads, difficulties and challenges encountered during installation of the micropiles and construction of the micropile pilecaps, and value engineering options developed during various phases of the project. Understanding that micropiles are often a preferred option for foundation retrofitting, the case history is expected to provide a baseline design approach and innovative solutions to typical challenges faced during construction, thereby reducing potential cost overruns during design development and construction of similar future projects.

Improvements continue to be made in rapid excavation and tunneling technology. There are several ways to examine the impacts of such improvements. The most common procedure is to monitor current developments and to evaluate prospects for expansion of present types of uses. Other approaches are called for, however, if the technology might be used in ways not now imagined, if the search is for information for managers of technology development, and if the issue is that of the wise use of the technology by society. The first section of the paper will pose these matters as questions. These questions will be examined from the point of view of the processes of technology development and utilization, and then further examined against the backdrop of processes at work within the urban area. Such an examination will provide insight into the way technology developments should proceed. The final section will present some comments that may be useful to those guiding the development of the technology and to those who might provide leadership for its wise utilization. THE QUESTIONS Three questions are posed: 1. Are there uses for the technology beyond further penetrations of its present markets? 2. Can information be supplied to managers of technology development so that they may improve the assignment of priorities among development choices? 3. How can society make wiser use of the technology?

The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The ?slope stability radar? (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR remotely scans rock slopes to continuously measure any surface movement and can be used to detect and alert users of wall movements with sub-millimeter precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many metalliferous and coal mines throughout the world. Over 80 systems are currently being used with current operations in 17 countries. Greater than 200 rock slope collapses and waste dump failures (from several to millions of tones) have been monitored, with ?warning? precursor movements recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper will present recent case studies of the SSR operation in coal and metalliferous mines. Slope Stability Hazards and Rock Slope Monitoring in Open Pit Mines Surface mining often creates excavation boundaries which are steeper than those would be created under natural processes in the same rock type. They are also undertake quite rapid stress changes during mining and are influenced by significant external forces such as blast vibrations and changes in groundwater. These conditions are likely to allow some degree of instability to develop in the pit slopes. The hazards associated with this instability of pit slopes can be extremely variable in character; ranging from small cobble sized rocks dislodging and falling from mine benches to complete collapse of entire pit walls. It is usually the position of mine geotechnical or geological staff to assess these hazards for mine operations. The assessment of hazards due to unstable slopes can be done by visual observation of precursor signs such as fracturing or rilling of loose material. A more reliable indicator of instability involves the quantitative measurement of outward movement and acceleration of material as an instability mechanism develops. There is strong evidence that small precursor movements of a rock wall occur for an extended period prior to rock slope collapse (Hoek and Bray, 1981). Development of a monitoring system, adopting acceptable slope deformation criteria coupled with warning systems and design of stabilization or risk reduction measures if appropriate has become a standard method of dealing with slope instability. Framework for Slope Hazard Management using the SSR A framework for the management of slope hazards is shown in Figure 1 (discussed in detail in Harries, 2007). Although this framework is specifically for use with the Slope Stability Radar, a similar framework could be developed for other monitoring technologies for monitoring slope deformation. An important point to consider is the sequential nature of the hazard management framework from selecting the context ? identifying hazards ? analysing hazards ? evaluating hazards ? treating hazards. [ ] Once the context of the system has been developed (for example ? to monitor for rapid bench scale collapse), the identification of hazards is the next stage in hazard management. Identification of slope hazards can be relatively straightforward due to the visual nature of the information that the SSR system produces. The areas of excessive wall deformation are highlighted in color maps of the mine slope with a co-aligned photographic image to review the actual site of interest. The responsible personnel must then analyses this data, usually reviewing the deformation style and rate, as well as the size of area that appears to be failing. This information can then be evaluated against organisation protocols (for example it may be only a small sub-bench failure that will be ?caught? by existing benches and hence can be categorized as a lower risk). Once these hazards are evaluated they can then be treated if required. Two major options are available to reduce the risk during this treatment option. We can reduce the likelihood of failure ? for example by buttressing the failure or de-pressurising of water pressures in a slope. However, the most likely plan of action is to reduce the consequence of the failure. One of the most successful opportunities to reduce the consequence of a slope failure is to ensure that no personnel or mining equipment is present at the location of a slope failure when collapse finally occurs. This has been the major benefit of the SSR system to the different mining operations around the world. Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The region includes the Deveci siderite/goethite deposit and the Hasancelebi, Karakuz and Kuluncak magnetite/goethite deposits; Deveci is the only mine in operation. The area consists of a serpentine-gabbro complex overlain by a volcano-sedimentary sequence hosting the iron ores. At least three generations of hydrothermal alteration have affected all rock types except the latest trachytic dykes. The Deveci deposits occur in a pyroclastic volcano-sedimentary sequence with shales and carbonates equivalent to the main mafic sequence, whereas the other three deposits formed contemporaneously with the intrusion of trachytic dykes. The deposits are of the volcanic-exhalative type, with syngenetic siderite in pillow lavas or stratiform layers the primary and main Fe-bearing mineral. In the west hydrothermal alteration has replaced siderite in pillow lavas with magnetite or has remobilised sideritic iron into magnetite veins

The clay slime generatea in many sand washing operations is usually very difficult to de-water. Treatment of these slimes is often limited by economic considerations and the properties of the solids to a gravity-driven process. The moisture characteristics of kaolinitic slimes from two different sand washing operations were measured.From these curves, equilibrium moisture contents for sedimentation and for drainage were calculated using the methods of soil physics. The validity of these calculations were confirmed by column experiments.The results show that the increased de-watering to be gained by drainage, as compared with sedimentation, is significant. Furthermore, observed rates of outflow indicate that water can be removed considerably morerapidly when drainage is possible.The practical application of these results to the dewatering of clay slimes is discussed.

Environmental considerations in addition to technical, economical and societal benefits are increasingly promoting the substitution of natural fibers for glass fiber in polymer matrix composites. However, natural fibers are heterogeneous in their dimensions, specially the cross section, which plays an important role in their mechanical strength. It has been found that the equivalent diameter of fibers such as sisal, ramie, pineapple and curaua correlates to different levels of tensile resistance. Piassava is a promising stiff natural fiber for composite reinforcement. In this work, a statistical analysis of tensile strength of piassava fibers using the Weibull methodology was performed. An attempt to correlate the fiber strength, obtained in tensile tests, with the diameter, precisely measured by means of a profile projector, was carried out. The results revealed an inverse dependence between the piassava fiber diameter and corresponding tensile strength. Fracture tip observation by SEM suggested a possible mechanism that could justify this inverse correlation.

Fire is still a scourge of the mining industry, although many precautionary measures have been and are being taken to reduce the incidence of fires and to combat them. Generally, the success of fire extinguishment is directly proportional to the speed of attack, and the speed of attack in turn is dependent upon the availability of materials and trained personnel. Preparations for firefighting are frequently neglected because they are considered emergency needs and do not contribute directly to coal production. Fire incites panic--a fact often overlooked--but such chaos can be minimized by training people in the use of equipment and procedures. Heat, smoke, and fumes hamper the approach to a fire; however, a relatively new technique of attacking fires with high-expansion foam may well contribute greatly to firefighting. The foam is transported to a fire and used at a considerable distance, thus permitting the firefighters to work more safely.

Mica is an orchid among minerals. It is formed in pegmatites, one of the most bizarre of igneous formations, and is exceeded by few other minerals in the perfection it may attain as to size, color, and cleavage. First used for window glazing, as an ornament and article of trade, it has become one of the most essential insulators of electricity, heat, and shock. Most internal combustion engines use mica condensers or capacitors and such machines of war as planes, tanks, and submarines are immobile without it. The original manuscript of this guide was written in April 1943 at the peak of war emergency. It was not used be- cause shortly thereafter a decision was made to buy on a one price basis eliminating differentials for both quality and size. This is now presented with the thought that from the standpoint of preparedness we can only consider an- other war imminent and every effort should he made to set up in usable form the experience gained during the Second World War. Colonial Mica Corp. was set up by Metals Reserve Co. as a wholly owned government agency to encourage production of domestic mica and to purchase it. It soon became the exclusive buying agency for such mica. The writer as Southern Manager called on all the private agencies buying mica to assist in formulating buying policies, methods, and prices.

A comprehensive understanding of the effects of autoclave configuration (batch, semi-batch, continuous) on the residence time necessary to achieve a target conversion is a prerequisite for design of commercial scale autoclaves. Particle size distribution, mineral and reagent concentrations, temperature and mixing also influence the conversion. This paper outlines the bases of using test data to predict performance of commercial scale autoclaves. Recommendations for coordinating test program design with selection of scale-up method are provided. Examples are given to illustrate the different levels of engineering effort needed to meet corresponding levels of design optimization and accuracy.

In presenting this paper may I preface my remarks by recognizing the presence here to-day of the many delegates from the overseas mining communities throughout the world. That is to say - those delegates not representative of Companies resident in Australia. This does not mean that my comments following are directed solely to the Australian exporter - far from it. The Company which I represent is internationally based. The experiences we have had in dealing and negotiating with our good friends the mineral cargo shippers vary very little in any operational area. However for the purposes of this exercise this address is based on some of our experiences within the Australian trade scene with the emphasis on the fact that we believe it has application to all trading areas.

The trapezoidal tapered ring method has made significant progress in recent years for shielded-TBM projects, excavating tunnels with high overburden, strict water tightness criteria, and multiple curve alignments. The selection of compatible tapered rings is critical for successful advancement of the tunnel, assuring efficient installation of rings, as well as prevention of ring damage and excessive leakage. Using experience from the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, this paper describes guidelines for ring selection in tunnel curves, geometric analyses that comply with criteria principals, and provides techniques developed to determine the appropriate relative key position.

During the process of developing surface or underground mines, some sites are considered for dumping of surface soils, while others are applied to reclaiming surface and waste disposal. For each kind of overburden, whether it be waste rock, low-grade material, or process tails, a separate storage site is considered so that it becomes possible to transport or recover the overburden separately. Decision-making must be completed by means of a selection process which takes into account the best methods of alternative sets in order to achieve these goals. This decision- making involves many parameters that are inter-related in that changes in some parameters affect the others. There are many methods of decision-making, however, Fuzzy Multi-attribute Decision-making (FMADM) and its functions are studied in this paper. The advantages of this method lies in its theoretical background, formulation, revising capability, unlimited alternatives, and consideration of the counteraction of the different parameters upon one another.

The Hill 50 Gold Mine is situated at Boogardie, 3 miles on a bearing of 295 degrees from; Mount Magnet township. Mount Magnet lies 300 miles north-north-east of Perth, Western Australia (Fig. 1).The older workings of the mine may be identified with those of Sirdar, Gold Mining Lease 696M The Sirdar had been worked before 1902 though no records remain, and irom 1903 to 1912 about a thousana tons at a grade of 6&apos; 2 dwt. was extracted annually; by the end of 1918 6,225 oz. of gold had been obtained from the milling of 17,852 tons of ore. In view of these yields, and the length and width of the lode, this mine was early recognized as one of the most promising in the district. From 1919 to 1924 the ground,including G.M.L. 1282M, was held as Mt. Zion G.M.L. 1183M.The Hill 50 Gold Mine N.L. company took up the workings as Hill 50 G.M.L. 1282M in 1934 and have continued operations to the date of writing. To the end of 1956 the Hill 50 Gold Mine had yielded 982,106 tons of ore for a return of 448,&apos;602 fine oz. of gold.The mine has been described by: J utson (1915), Feldtmann (1920), Johnson (1949), and Finucane (1953). Finucane (1953) details the mine structure to a depth of 414 ft. The author was able to examine the mine to a depth of 1305 ft. Detailed main level mapping to the 1060 level and a detailed surface examination have revealed aspects of the structure which were previously obscure.

When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced by the oxidation of pyrite. The kinetics of certain steps in the overall reaction were studied. A rate equation for the oxidation of ferrous sulphate by gaseous oxygen was derived for the temperature range from 1000 to 200&#176; C. An exact rate equation for the production of ferrous ion from pyrite could not be established but it was shown that the temperature, oxygen pressure, pyrite surface area, and the reduction of ferric ion by pyrite are important. A rate equation was derived for the reaction of manganese dioxide with ferrous sulphate. A major facfor controlling the rate was whether or not ferric oxide was formed by hydrolysis at the manganese dioxide surface.It was shown that if hydrolysis was prevented the factor cpntrolling the rate of the overall reaction ,was the rate of production of ferrous ion, and little ferrous ion was oxidised by oxygen. When hydrolysis of iron did occur, the overall rate was not a simplefunction of anyone factor and much ferrous ion was wasted by oxidation with oxygen.INTRODUCTIONIn another paper (Cornelius and Woodcock, 1958) the results of the reaction of an aqueous suspension of a manganese ore and pyrite with oxygen are reported. It is shown that the ferrous ion and sulphuric acid generated in situ by the oxidation of pyrite, dissolves manganese as manganous sulphate.
