The Central Michigan area held first place in the state during the year. Midland and Isabella, the leading counties in 1932, produced most of the oil in 1933. The Porter field southeast of Mt. Pleasant and along the same structural trend saw the greatest drilling activity. In Porter during the year 117 new wells were drilled. Under proration these wells produced 3,583,617 bbl., or nearly one-half the total for the state, which has been estimated at 7,947,695 bbl. The Porter field is already outlined on all sides except the northwest. It probably reached its peak in 1933. Unless a new field of some magnitude is developed in 1934, Michigan will see a continuous decline. The Greendale extension to the old Mt. Pleasant field furnished the new flush for 1932. In 1933

In Austria's only producing field, at Zistersdorf, Erdoel Produktions-gesellschaft completed a single new producer, its well Gosting 6 coming in early in October for an average production of about 15 tons daily. For further testing within the proved part of the field this company's Gosting 7 was at the close of the year drilling in Pannonian strata at 760 m., and its Gosting 8 was rigging up. Outside of the proved area of the Zistersdorf field two further tests located on the Steinberg dome failed to find production in the known oil-bearing strata of the Sarmatian, and were deepened as wildcats into the Cretaceous Flysch. The first of these, Neusiedel 1, about one kilometer north of the known producing area, found oil in the Flysch beds at a depth of 1290 m. for an initial production of about 10 tons per day. The second test, Windisch Baumgarten la, is an old well previously considered a failure, which when deepened achieved a production of about 5 tons per day in the Flysch Inoceramus beds at 985 m. Neither of the foregoing wells is producing from a stratigraphically definable horizon, oil accumulation in the Flysch of this area being apparently controlled by tectonic breccias or related crevices.

The total production of crude oil in Canada showed only a small improvement in 1936 over 1935, but developments of great importance took place in Alberta on the west flank of the Turner Valley field in the foothills southwest of Calgary. These have led to renewed activity in drilling such as has not been experienced for many years, and undoubtedly this will result in a very considerable increase in the oil production during 1937.

Most of the petroleum produced in New York State is obtained by flooding; that is, water drive. No important oil fields have been developed during the past 30 years, nor does there seem much hope that the productive oil areas will be substantially enlarged in the future. There is some prospect that additional supplies may be obtained by deeper drilling, but deep tests for gas to the Oriskany sandstone in some of the oil-producing areas have been without results so far as any discoveries of oil are concerned. Although the flooding method had been made legal in 1919, and some floods had been in operation previous to 1921, that year marks the beginning of a rapid increase in oil production by the new method. The flush production of oil in New York was in 1882, shortly after the discovery of the Richburg pool in Allegany County. The oil production in that year amounted to 6,685,000 bbl. The 1937 production of 5,478,000 bbl. was the largest since the flush production of 55 years ago. The effectiveness of water-flooding for increasing oil production from the old New York fields is shown in Table 1. It has been estimated that not over one-fourth of the area is being flooded. Very little of flooded territory has ceased to produce. In the presence of oxygen, galena is oxidized in an aqueous medium containing sodium hydroxide, in accordance with the following reaction: PbS + 2O2 + 3OH ? HPbO2 + SO4 = + H2O A novel method was devised for following this reaction which takes place in an autoclave under oxygen pressure, by measuring the concentration of HPbO2- in the solution with a cathode ray polarograph employing stationary platinum electrodes. Using this procedure a study was made of the kinetics of the reaction, in which the effect of a number of variables, including temperature, oxygen pressure, NaOH concentration, and agitation, on the rate, were determined. The results of this study are described and discussed, in terms of possible mechanisms for the reaction. IT is known that sulphide minerals can be oxidized in aqueous media in the presence of oxygen under pressure. Reactions of this type can be classified in two categories depending upon whether the products of oxidation are insoluble or soluble in the aqueous medium. An example of the first type of reaction is the oxidation of pyrite in alkaline solutions, giving rise to an insoluble iron oxide. The kinetics of this reaction have been investigated and its mechanism established.' It has been applied in the oxidation of iron sulphides present in refractory gold ores to improve the subsequent recovery of gold by cyanida-tion.' The second type of reaction finds application where it is desired to recover the metal by leaching during oxidation. In this case a medium is selected in which the oxidized mineral is soluble. For example, nickel, copper, and cobalt sulphide ores can be treated by oxidation in the presence of a solution of ammonia dissolving the nickel, copper, and cobalt as the metal ammine sulphate salts.:' A similar treatment has also been reported to apply to zinc sulphide ores.' It is known that lead sulphate is soluble in solutions of sodium hydroxide or ammonium acetate. It should therefore be possible to dissolve the lead from galena ores by aqueous oxidation with oxygen under pressure using either of these solutions. The applicability of the ammonium acetate treatment has been investigated and confirmed in a recent study.' The present paper describes the results of a similar study in which the kinetics of the oxidation of galena in sodium hydroxide solutions have been investigated. The object of this investigation was pri- marily to obtain information of a fundamental nature relating to the kinetics and mechanism of this reaction. The use of pulps of comminuted ore in a study of this type is undesirable because of the difficulty in controlling and measuring the surface area. The measurements were therefore made using galena crystals of measured surface area and in this way absolute reaction rates were obtained. The reaction was found to proceed as follows: PbS + 2O2 + 3OH ? HPbO2 + SO4 + H2O [I] The products are sodium plumbite and sodium sulphate salts which dissolve in the aqueous solution. The reaction studies were carried out in an autoclave in which a desired pressure of oxygen was maintained. The reaction was followed by measuring the concentration of lead in the solution with a cathode ray polarograph. The results obtained in this investigation are presented and discussed in the present paper. Experimental Materials: The crystals of galena were obtained from Violamac Mines, Sandon, B. C. The following impurities were indicated by spectrographic analysis carried out by the Provincial Assay Office, Victoria, B. C.: Sn, 0.02 to 0.2 pct; Sb, 0.07 to 0.7; Zn, 0.01 to 0.1; Si, Fe, Mg, As, less than 0.05 pct; Ag, 126 oz per ton, the latter determined by standard fire-assaying procedure. After cutting a specimen measuring approximately 5x7x12 mm, the crystal surfaces were ground parallel to the 100 axes using No. 2 emery, washed with water, and the dimensions were measured with a micrometer. Oxygen gas was of commercial grade and supplied in cylinders by Canadian Liquid Air. Solutions were made up with chemicals of chemically pure grade and distilled water. The Pima mine, Pima County, Ariz., a 53,500-tpd copper mine, is located 17 miles south of Tucson, Ariz. The mine is in a sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments striking east-north-east and dipping southeasterly. These sediments are intruded by a Tertiary quartz monzonite porphyry. The Paleozoic Permian (?) dolomites, limestones, and sandstones have been altered to calc-silicate skarn, marble, and quartzite. The overlying Mesozoic Triassic (?) clastic sediments have undergone some recrystallization and hydrothermal alteration. The clastic metasediments are divided into three distinct lithologic units: lithic arenite, arkose, and interbedded and overlying black argillite. Three types of hydrothermal alteration in the clastic rocks are propylitic alteration (epidote, chlorite, and quartz, with or without sericite), quartz-sericite alteration, and potassic alteration (K-feldspar, quartz, and sericite, with or without chlorite and calcite). The porphyry has undergone potassic alteration. Dominant structures are an east-west postmineral fault in the western part of the pit, and strong low angle faulting and shearing which truncates the ore body at depth. The two joint sets, one parallel to bedding and the other at right angles to bedding are prominent in the mine. Faulting is in two dominant directions, one striking northwest, dipping northeast, and the other striking northeast, dipping northwest. Economic mineralization is prediminantly disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite, and molybdenite-quartz veinlets. There are less important amounts of magnetite, hematite, sphalerite, galena, tennantite, and bornite. Mineralization is believed to be both structurally and chemically controlled.

Many able men have contributed to the subject of coal classification, and recent publications on the subject have indicated a crystallization of opinion in that connection which promises the development in the near future of a scheme of coal classification which will be of real and increasing value to coal producers and users, as well as to those interested in coal on more exclusively scientific grounds. It is obvious that such a classification must be simple; must be based upon readily ascertainable factors; and if properly developed will apply to the whole range of coals between peat and anthracite and not merely to certain types of coal. Many of the numerous schemes of classification proposed in the past have given quite satisfactory results when applied to the higher rank coals, but have broken down when applied to the younger coals of higher moisture, and, as previously pointed out by the writer,' this breakdown has been due to the practice of ruling out "moisture" as an essential component of the volatile matter reported in the customary proximate analysis of coal, whereas a review of the mode of formation and natural history of coal satisfies us that moisture is a normal and natural ingredient among its volatile constituents; and a knowledge of analytical practice shows that the "moisture" and "volatile matter" reported are both mixtures of moisture and volatile matter, rather than sharply differentiated distillation fractions. After an extended consideration of the subject the writer regards the conventional proximate analyses of coals as affording the information essential for a both practically and scientifically satisfactory c1assification—assuming that the coal samples compared have been collected and analyzed according to standard methods. Two variables are required for a workable classification, and these appear to be afforded by the calorific value and proportion of volatile constituents (including moisture) credited to the coal on an ash-free basis. By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

As a result of the 1972 Buffalo Creek disaster, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), now the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) initiated the draft of new federal regulations to deal with the mine waste impoundment and refuse pile problems. Public hearings were held and finally promulgated in October, 1976. As stated in 30 Code of Federal Regulations 77.214-216, the complete engineering design plan which is mandated by the regulations has to be approved by a coal mine health and safety district manager. During the past 18 months MSHA has gained considerable experience through the submission, review, and approval process. This report indicates the procedures, general design criteria and inspection requirements for submission of engineering plans to be approved. In particular, problem areas encountered most frequently by both operators and MSHA will be discussed. Only through diligent efforts by the operators, consultants and government, can we hope to accomplish the common goal to improve the safety of operations.
