The charge to be described was made in a seven-ton furnace, with a hearth twelve feet long and eight feet wide, with three gas and three air ports on each side. The stock of the entire heat was charged cold in one hour and five minutes, a part of the pig being first placed upon the bottom to protect it, then upon it the plate-scrap and blooms, and finally the remainder of the pig—some two thousand pounds. In fire hours and twenty-five minutes after beginning the charge the metal was melted down level, and two hundred pounds of hot twelve-per cent. spiegel was charged, care being taken to have it entirely immersed in the bath. In two hours more the bath was thoroughly melted and hot, and began to boil, i. e., the carbon began to be oxidized and evolved through the bath of covering slag as carbonic acid and carbonic oxide gases. Seventy-five pounds of lumps of Republic specular iron ore were added at this time, increasing the action, so that in ten minutes after the metal was in active ebullition. A test of the metal showed it to have about 0.90 per cent. carbon. One hour after the first ore was added a test was again taken, after thorough rabbling of the metal, and it was found to be 0.37 per cent. carbon. One hundred pounds more of lump Republic ore and about seventy-five pounds of limestone were then added, and fifty minutes later, after the bath was thoroughly rabbled, a -test showed the metal to have 0.23 per cent. carbon. Twenty-five pounds more of Republic iron ore were added and the metal allowed to boil for twenty minutes, when a test, after rabbling, showed the carbon to be 0.18 per cent. and the manganese to be 0.01 per cent.; the slag fracture was vitreous and of a very dark-green color. About forty pounds of limestone were added, and, the metal being hot and in a state of quiet ebullition, a hickory pole of twelve feet length and about four inches diameter, was run through the aperture in the centre door and held in a steady inclined position in the bath, with the end touching the bottom, the pole being shoved in further as it was burned away. In the course of the persistent and rapid advance of our country towards the goal she has set for herself, of commercial and manufacturing supremacy, there stand out certain periods or cycles of prosperity or depression, succeeding one another with a comparative regularity as to their ultimate trend, but of varying lengths and intensities. I might compare this course to that of a railroad between two points at different levels, with intervening mountain ranges and valleys, the up-grades climbing towards the final upper terminal of prosperity, while the down-grades retard the ascent, and tend to return to the valleys below. Just at the present time we are evidently at the bottom of one of these valleys, and, before starting to climb the next divide, it may be prudent for us to look into the condition of our rolling-stock, and especially into that of our brakes, and see what the experience of our downward journey has taught us, and whether we are properly equipped for the new upward advance which now lies before us. Probably no previous period of the same duration has produced in all branches of mining and metallurgy improvements SO many and so various as have the last ten or twelve years. In 14-karat gold alloys, as in 10-karat gold alloys,3 the addition of such metals as zinc, nickel, copper and silver produces a wide range of physical and chemical properties such as color, hardness, corrosion resistance and melting points. These important factors made gold alloys desirable in the optical work and for jewelry. In 14-karat gold alloys, as well as in 10-karat or 12-karat, it is possible to have two golds of the same color, one of which will corrode more than the other, although it may be harder. Some of these alloys have been investigated by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise,= and L. Sterner Rainer.4 In this group of alloys the gold content of 58.3 per cent (14-karat) was held constant, while the copper varied from 36 to 24 per cent. The balance of the alloy consisted of one, two, or three of the metals silver, zinc, and nickel. All the alloys were melted in an induction furnace and cast into an ingot that measured 3 by 1/4 by 3/4 in. The method of determining the melting points, color determinations and acid test have been discussed in previous papers by the author.2, 3 It is necessary to use small test bars (Fig. I). The tensile bars were annealed at 1300oF. for 20 min. and then air-cooled. There being a very marked drop when the yield point was reached, "the drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point. Alloys Gold-copper.zilzc A~loys.—Gold-copper-zinc alloys melt, cast, and labricate easily. The low melting points, however, limit their use to some extent. The physical properties of these alloys are not entirely satisfactory. When the ultimate strength is satisfactory, the elongation and reduction of area are too low (Table I). Gold-copper-sinr-nickel A lloys.—In this group of alloys, in which zinc and nickel replace copper in approximately equal parts (Table I), the yield point, hardness, and ultimate strength increase with the increase of zinc and nickel content, while the reduction of area and elongation decrease. The physical properties are desirable, particularly of the white gold alloys. The alloys of this group are not difficult to cast and fabricate, and most of these colors could be used commercially. Gold-copper-nickel A lloys.—Gold-copper-nickel alloys are similar to the gold-copper-zinc and the gold-copper-zinc-nickel alloys. They do, however, possess high yield point, ultimate strength and hardness, somewhat higher than those of the other two groups mentioned (Table I). AS shown in previous papers by the authors 9-l7† the resistance of a metal to fracture, like its resistance to plastic deformation, is a function of all three principal stresses.‡ A technical cohesion limit is the technically determined resistance to fracture under a specific stress system. The technical cohesive strength thus comprises an infinite number of technical cohesion limits corresponding to the infinite number of possible combinations of the principal stresses. The technical cohesive strength, therefore, may be represented by a surface in a diagram with the three principal stresses as coordinates. As shown in previous papers, 9-I8 the technical cohesive strength increases with plastic deformation, with decrease in temperature, and with increase in the strain rate. The technical cohesion limit, therefore, is affected by the same factors that affect the flow stress, § namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate. More- over, the influence of each of these factors on the technical cohesion limit has been shown to be qualitatively similar to the influence of the same factor on the flow stress.9-18 Advance of knowledge about the conditions determining fracture, of metals has been retarded by the reluctance of some investigators to abandon preconceived ideas about how metals "should" behave. The incorrect idea is still prevalent that the conditions determining resistance to fracture are very different from those determining the flow stress. Attempts are still being made to express resistance to fracture in terms of a single parameter, such as a limiting value of the greatest principal stress, the maximum shearing stress, or the volume stress (one-third the algebraic sum of the three principal stresses). In these attempts, a sharp distinction is sometimes made between a ductile or "plastic fracture " and a "brittle fracture." In making this distinction, however, the meaning attached to the term "brittle fracture" sometimes is not made clear. The term could mean fracture after very little plastic deformation or it could be used to designate the type of fracture. An ordinary fracture of a ductile metal at room temperature starts as a cleavage, generally transverse to the direction of the greatest principal stress, but eventually changes to a shearing fracture. In some conditions, however, the metal fractures entirely by cleavage, with no evidence of plastic deformation during the fracture; the surface of such a fracture may have a

Interest in the sink-float plant operated by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, has recently been largely confined to the preparation and reconditioning of the galena medium. The ease and simplicity of these operations in a concentrating mill producing a flotation lead concentrate has occasioned enough comment to possibly justify a brief description. The subject is treated from an operator's viewpoint only; no effort is made to discuss it in a theoretical or technical manner. Plant at Bunker Hill The sink-float plant was first operated in December 1941. It was built for the purpose of quickly increasing mill capacity with a minimum of equipment. It is the Huntington-Heberlein sink and float process using galena medium and is operated under license from the Sink and Float Corporation, New York city. Lead-zinc ore from the Bunker Hill mine is crushed to pass a 1¼ in, screen and is then washed and separated on vibrating screens having 4½-mm. round-hole punched plates. The screen under-size, amounting to 33 per cent of the mill feed, is dewatered and sent to the ball-mill feed bins. The screen oversize goes to the sink-float plant, where 50 per cent of the oversize, or 33 per cent of the mill feed, is float, which is washed free of medium and disposed of as a tailing. The remaining 33 per cent is sink, which, after washing, is crushed to pass 36 in. and joins the under-size in the ball-mill feed bins. The normal plant capacity is 1700 tons per 24 hr. About 1.7 per cent of the total lead and 3.3 per cent of the total zinc in the feed is lost with the sink-float tailings (Table I). More complete descriptions of the H. H. process and Bunker Hill sink-float plant are given in several recent articles, listed at the end of the paper. Preparation OF Medium at Bunker Hill New medium is made intermittently as needed, usually 12 hr. in each 6 days. A small portion of the current mill flotation concentrate is diverted from the lead cleaner cells to a I-in. vertical sand pump and pumped to a two-cell 36-in. Agitair flotation machine, where NaCn and ZnSO4 are added and the grade of concentrate is improved as shown in Table 2. Tailing from this operation is returned by gravity

For the purpose of developing combinations of higher strength and conductivity than are obtainable by heat treatment alone in the age-hardening copper alloys, an investigation has been made of the effects of combinations of heat treatment and strain hardening on the properties in question. The investigation was limited to a study of the alloys containing nickel and silicon; nickel, silicon and cadmium; and cobalt and silicon. The experiments made in the course of the study are described in this paper in three groups: 1. The effect of hard drawing subsequent to heat treatment on the mechanical and electrical properties of the alloys. 2. The effect of low-temperature aging on the properties of heat-treated and hard-drawn alloys. 3. The effect of strain on the rate of aging of quenched nickel-silicon-copper alloys.

The Climax Molybdenum Company's mine is situated on the Continental Divide at Fremont Pass in Lake County, Colorado. Elevations at the mine range from 11,000 it. to over 12,000 ft. The ore body is on the south flank of Bartlett Mountain, a prominent peak in the Ten Mile Range. A horizontal section of the mine, such as the Phillipson level (Fig. I), shows the outer ore zone as an annular ring varying in width from 300 to 800 ft., surrounding barren silicified rock. In vertical section the outer ore zone is dome shaped (Figs. 2 and 3), the apex of which is truncated at the surface by glaciation, exposing part of the ore body. The outer ore zone overlies the barren core and is itself overlain on the flanks of the dome with unmineralized rock. An ore zone of similar shape underlies the barren core of silicified rock, known as the Central Ore Zone (Figs. 2 and 3). Molybdenite is distributed uniformly through a zone of moderately silicified granite, schist and quartz monzonite (early) porphyry, around a highly silicified core. The molybdenite occurs in veinlets associated with fine granular quartz and pyrite, replacing altered and fractured granite, schist, and porphyry, and as coatings on numerous fractures cutting these rocks. Intense fracturing of all rocks is a characteristic feature of the Climax ore body. Most fractures are mineralized and no longer represent planes of weakness. Much fracturing is postmineral, however, and these fractures are generally filled with sericite or gouge, or remain as unmineralized joints separating otherwise massive rock into blocks of various size. Study and Mapping of Caving Characteristics Important differences in the behavior of caving of various blocks of ore at Climax have been recognized, involving arching of the rock over caved stopes, tendency of caved rocks to funnel, and size of caved rocks. Also, new problems have arisen associated with future mining on the Phillipson level, and may occur with proposed development of lower levels, such as excessive stress on mine pillars caused by large masses of overlying stable rock, and higher costs in maintenance of mine workings in soft, weak rock. To explain the differences and to provide solution for these problems, a study of geologic structure was undertaken early in 1944, to determine whether it would be possible to map cavability of rock from physical features exposed in mine workings and in diamond-drill cores. A comparison of known caved areas was made and rocks were classified structurally according to strength or degree of cavabil-ity. As nothing of this nature had been done before at Climax, the approach to the problem was rather indefinite. Several trials were made with negative results, but collectively indicated a suitable method. This was to examine all mine workings and diamond-drill cores, record-

The attenuation and phase shift which formations produce in the electromagnetic field of an induction-type electrical well-logging instrument are great enough to substantially affect the response of the tool to formation conductivity under normal logging conditions. The application of the general equations for the propagation of an electromagnetic field in a conductive medium to the transmitter-receiver coil pair of an induction-logging-tool coil system gives an expression for the response which properly takes the propagation effects into account. A comparison of a calculation of this type with the response computed from the commonly used geometric factor concept, which does not include the propagation effect, leads to a factor Go representing the ratio of the responses computed by the two methods. The value of Go decreases not only with increasing formation conductivity, but also with increasing transmitter-to-detector coil spacing. For a single coil pair with a 40-in. spacing, the value of Go is 0.972 in a 20-millimho/m formation. The value is reduced to 0.915 and 0.812 for conductivities of 200 and 1,000 millimhos/m. As a result, the basic signal generated by the induction-logging coil system is not linearly related to formation conductivity as expected from the geometric factor concept. A uniform conductivity scale can be obtained only by adding a suitable nonlinear element to the recording system. The addition of auxiliary coils, having spacings less than the main-coil span, to achieve focusing results in an even greater departure of the basic signal from linearity with conductivity. The solution of the field equations near the interface between two formations of different conductivity gives the curve shape on an induction logging tool in crossing the interface. The addition of auxiliary coils to achieve focusing can add anomalous character to the curve shape in crossing the interface, which might be mistaken for lithological detail. Preliminary calculations which include the propagation effects in the determination of the conductivity correction for thin beds lead to correction factors which are substantially smaller than those obtained from geometric factor considerations. It is apparent that thin-bed corrections derived from geometric factor calculations are of doubtful validity. INTRODUCTION Although the electromagnetic induction type of electrical well log has been used for a number of years and has gained general acceptance in quantitative well-log interpretation, no technically complete investigation of the mechanism and of its operation has been published. The studies which have been presented are based upon the premise that neither the shape nor the intensity of the induction field of the logging tool is in any way affected by the electrical characteristics of the formation. From the inception of induction logging it has been recognized that under some formation conditions the performance of the instrument could be expected to be substantially different from that predicted by the simplified analysis. This anomalous performance has been called "skin effect" since it is the result of the same phenomenon which causes high-frequency alternating currents to flow only near the surface of metallic conductors. In the range of conductivities encountered in the sediments, the formation actually does not exhibit the sharply defined conducting "skin" shown by metals. The gradual modification of the distribution of the currents in the formation, produced by the induction field of the logging tool, is the direct result of phenomena associated with the propagation of the electromagnetic field through the formation. Therefore, it can be much more appropriately described as the "propagation effect". One purpose of this paper is to review the results of a solution of the equations for the performance of a single transmitter-receiver coil pair induction-logging system which takes into account the propagation effect, showing the manner in which the tool performance established by this analysis differs from that derived from the less comprehensive analyses currently in use. I DESIRE to submit, for the consideration and information of the members of the Institute, the following data, drawings, and tables, showing what I believe will be interesting information with regard to the diamond drill, and its uses in developing mineral lands. I would first say that the results given have been obtained during the past two years by means of two drilling machines belonging to the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, operating on their coal lands in the Mahanoy, Lehigh, and Wyoming regions. 1st. A tabulated statement, giving location of borings, date, progress, total cost, itemized cost per foot, etc. 2d. Section showing strata bored in Nos. 5 and 10 holes at Mt. Carmel, see Plate VI. 3d. Section showing strata bored in No. 19 hole at Hazleton, see Plate VI. 4th. Photograph and description of drill No. 2. From the first it will be seen that the total number of test-holes bored up to May 1st of this year is 24; 9 of these are in the Mahanoy region, 6 in the Lehigh region, and 10 in the Wyoming region, in all of which cores have been taken for the whole distance. The total distance bored is 9902 feet. The majority of the holes have been put down for the purpose of proving the lower veins of the coal series, and have had to encounter the harder rocks of the coal formation. Much of the distance has been through the lower conglomerates, going in some cases through the coarse egg conglomerate, the foundation of the coal deposit, and to the green sandstone and red shale which underlie it. These lower sandrocks and conglomer¬ates are among the hardest known to geologists, and present a formidable resistance to the exploring drill. This fact must be taken into consideration in comparisons of cost of drilling, and when considered will still further improve the very favorable results I am able to show in my statement of costs. In illustration, I will cite the work of one bit when boring in the upper or softer rocks of the Wyoming region, where 280 feet were obtained without resetting, while in the Lehigh and Mahanoy regions, in the lower and harder rocks, bits set with the same quality of diamonds would only bore from 3 to 20 feet before being worn out. A generalized mathematical structure is proposed whereby internal species mass flows within a flotation network are defined uniquely by a matrix of enhancement factors. An element of the enhancement factor matrix is defined as the ratio of the mass flow of that species leaving a given cell in the concentrate to the species mass flow leaving the same cell in the tailings. To predict the enhancement factors, knowledge of flotation kinetics effects is required. Recently experimental data has become available relating to the performance of industrial flotation circuits which indicate that the discrete or discrete-distributed kinetic schemes are capable of reasonably effective simulations. These simulations show the importance of including froth effects. The prediction of performance of networks from small-scale batch tests on flotation streams shows that the model for the froth phase used in the simulations does not scale-up well and that aeration effects are also difficult to predict. The network analysis should be useful in differential flotation of complex ores and it is disappointing-in this context that little information on the kinetics of activation and depression is available.

THE CHAIRMAN (HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J).-This excellent paper fills a gap in our Transactions and is most acceptable. In the early days another way of casting tire ingots, sometimes called cheeses, because of their shape, was to use a 22-gage sheet-iron cylindrical can for each ingot of the proper size to give the weight desired. These cans were bottom cast in groups, usually of four, each can being surrounded by a heavy iron ring somewhat taller than itself the top of the can being covered by a circular cast-iron plate having a small conical riser in the center, about 2 ½ in. in diameter at the bottom and 10 in. high. The top plate was clamped down to resist the upward pressure of the fluid metal and the space between the can and the outer ring, usually about 2 in. wide, was filled with dry sand. The riser permitted the escape of some of the air displaced by the steel and also increased the pressure in the steel when the mold was filled, and so diminished somewhat the tendency for gas holes to form. But little was known of segregation and pipe in those days, though the center of an ingot was understood to be the worst part, and it was separated in part in the disk which was punched out in perforating the ingot. This disk was about 8 in. in diameter and from ¾ to 2 in. thick, the variation in thickness being to rectify the weight. When an ingot was too -heavy, a thicker disk-was made by not driving the punch in quite as far as when the ingot-weight was right. Then the bloom was turned over and the punch driven in on the other side, which finished the punching and detached the disk. The tire bloom was then" becked" and later reheated and rolled as described in the paper. The forging was done with a 10-ton double-acting steam hammer. The steel generally speaking had lower carbon, from 0.45 to 0.55 per cent., than tires today have, and the tires were smaller, the most common size of ingot weighing 1,060 lb. each. Y.-This paper was specially requested by the Iron and Steel Committee, because that Committee thought so important an industry should have its history written by one who was familiar with it, and before he had forgotten, or all the rest of the world had forgotten, its early stages. Mr. Aertsen has said that it is not an exhaustive research. I think it would not be any different if it were an exhaustive research, because our library made a careful attempt to find some written light on the history of these tires, but very little was found.

Five or six alloys each in the systems Ni-C.v, Ni-Mo, and NL-W, spaced to cover the single phase areas as well as a part of the adjacent two-phase field, were prepared as uacuum-melted alloys. Tensile tests at room temperature and stress rupture tests at 1200° and 1500°F we.ve run for time periods to give fracture in 0.1 to 500 hr. Observations mere made of solid-solution and second-phase strengthening or uleakening, coupled with studies of ductility and the role of structure on the noted behavior patterns. THE development of stable creep-resistant alloys while broad and systematic is also highly empirical. A number of simple rules have been suggestedL-" but these are based on scant data. Whereas rules for low-temperature alloy strengthening can be applied with some success in more simple systems, the extension to behavior at high temperatures (greater than about 0.4 of the absolute melting temperature) is very poorly understood and has encountered important exceptions and deviations in terms of atom size or valency effects. In particular, the occurrence of both solid-solution weakening4,5 and second-phase weakening2 at high temperatures is of interest. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Nickel was chosen as the base material because of its important role in current high-temperature alloy applications, because of its freedom from a phase transformation, and because of wide solubilities for many elements of interest. The selected alloys were single- and two-phase structures in the Ni-Cr,6 Ni-Mo,7 and Ni-w 8 systems. The alloys were vacuum melted and cast, utilizing high-purity raw materials, in the form of 15 lb ingots. They were readily forged into 1/2-in. bar stock (except the two highest chromium alloys). The alloy compositions are shown in Table I. Typical impurity values are: Carbon: Max 0.03 pct (except for 30 and 35 pct Cr alloys which had 0.07) Nitrogen: Max 0.005 pct (except for two of the Cr alloys which had 0.05) Sulfur: Max 0.004 pct Silicon: Max 0.05 pct Each alloy was solution treated (air quenched) to produce comparable grain size. The two-phase alloys were then overaged in an effort to produce a stable structure for testing at 1200° and 1500°F, The results are summarized in Table 11. Following the heat treatments outlined in Table 11, the bars were machined to a gage section of 1.25-in. long by 0.250-in. diam. In addition to room-temperature tensile tests, stress-rupture tests were run at 1200" and 1500°F for time periods from 0.1 to about 500 hr. RESULTS Room-Temperature Mechanical Properties—The ultimate tensile strength, total elongation, and reduction of area values for all the alloys are plotted vs atomic percent of the solute element in Fig. 1. It can be seen that for the same amount of solute element the ultimate tensile strength increases in the order chromium, molybdenum, tungsten. Elongation increases (reduction of area decreases) with increasing amounts of solute for all the solid solution alloys, the values ranging from 50 to 70 pct. One of the first questions that naturally occurs to one who handles steel is, " Why does steel harden?" To answer this question the chemist and physicist have devoted much thought and experiment, and while they have enriched our store of knowledge of the nature and composition of steel, it cannot be said that they have yet solved the problem involved in its hardening. In this communication I desire to direct attention to a line of investigation yet new, in the hope that it may receive the attention. of those who have the time and ability to pursue it. I refer to magnetism. There are so many parallels between the action of magnetism on iron and steel and their behavior under different processes of manipulation that it would seem. as if there must be some connection between tile forces at work in the different cases, if, indeed, there be not an identify of force in all of these cases. Magnetism, as me know it, may be merely the visible manifestation of forces, which may serve as a guide to lead us to an exact knowledge of the structure, tile strains, and the resistances with which me have to deal in iron and steel. If a magnet be brought close to a pile of iron filings, the little pieces of iron will fly to the maguet and attach themselves to it, with their longer axes lying in the direction of the force. If molten cast iron be poured into an iron mould,—a chill,—the iron upon crystallizing will form needlelike crystals, with their long axes normal to the surfaces of the mould. • If the iron is at the proper temperatare and the quantity small, compared to the mass of the mould, the whole of it, will be chilled, or set, in 'the hard needlelike crystals
