INTRODUCTION. This paper is a discussion of a part of the mineral wealth of the States of Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico. It does not refer to the precious metals, some miles of which, in these States, are said to have been worked before the advent of the Spanish conquistadores in the sixteenth century, as my purpose is to invite attention to the exploration of deposits of coal and iron-ores in the Mixteca region. The prominence given to coal is warranted by the great effect of the scarcity of fuel upon the industrial development of Mexico. Under the progressive administration of President Porfirio Diaz, the Republic has made wonderful advances in the past three decades; and this progress would have been greater but for the limitations imposed by expensive fuel. In the spring of 1906 I was detailed by the Birkinbine Engineering Offices, of Philadelphia, to accompany A. B. Adams, of New York, in a reconnoissance of reported deposits of iron-ores in the State of Oaxaca. The result of this expedition was the formation, in 1907, of the Oaxaca Iron & Coal Co., of which Mr. Adams became, and has remained, President and General Manager, and I have spent the past three years as Chief Engineer of this company in Mexico, principally in western Oaxaca, where field-headquarters were established. In these trying times of proration and low oil prices, it is decidedly necessary for all branches of the petroleum industry to accord full recognition to the economic phenomena that contribute to its varying state of welfare. Perhaps no other single factor has a more important bearing upon the general oil situation than the supply and demand of gasoline. Year after year, the records have shown that the degree of prosperity or depression accompanying the industry's developments has been to a large extent influenced by the degree of balance maintamed between the supply and demand of gasoline. More and more it is being realized within the industry that equilibrium between the supply and demand of gasoline forms the basic structure of crude and product market values and, consequently, the deciding factor in the financial results of the industry as a whole. The influence of the gasoline situation upon the market and financial structure of the petroleum industry was effectively demonstrated during 1930, when excess accumulation of gasoline undermined not only the refined oil market but the crude market as well. In fact, it was a top-heavy gasoline situation that defeated the realization of benefits that might have accrued from an otherwise favorable statistical position in the producing branch of the industry. Indicative of this is the fact that crude oil production was curtailed to the extent of 98,323,000 bbl. last year, while refinery runs to stills were maintained at an excessive rate until late in the year, creating an excess gasoline production of 6,663,000 bbl. above actual requirements. Nevertheless, the movement to curtail refinery operations during the closing months of the year prevented a far worse situation, although it came too late to turn the ebbing momentum of the general oil market. Despite the severe depression of the market values that accompanied 1930 developments, it can be said that the results attained during the closing months of the year, in the direction of production control, marked a decisive turn in the industry's economic affairs. In fact, a review of the oil situation from every angle points definitely to a better general understanding and recognition of the workings of the economic law of supply and demand. The unstable metal market during 1949, with resulting lower metal prices, has focused every mine operator's attention on the problem of reducing operating costs. Improvement in mining, methods, use of modern mechanical mining equipment, and increasing the efficiency of the labor force are the tools with which we will have to work. Careful planning is necessary to coordinate all phases so that no one phase is overdone. A mine may become over-mechanized if, for instance, capital charges against new equipment exceed the savings in labor costs, or where a large enough tonnage is not produced. The cooperation, of labor is essential to any mechanization program. There have been too many instances where mechanization and improvements have done nothing more than make up for a decrease in labor efficiency, thus bringing the production of labor back to its old standard. The operator has gained little and labor has gained only a "softer job." In any mechanization program there are gains to be had by both the operator and labor. By the efficient application of modern equipment and improved mining methods the operator should gain by decreased costs, and labor may profit by receiving a share of these decreased costs.

THE micrography and macrography of aluminum and its alloys present certain difficulties. Many of the difficulties attendant on the micrography have been removed by methods developed during the past few years, notably those of E. H. Dix, Jr.1 The development of grain size in aluminum and its alloys may be equally troublesome, yet comparatively little detailed attention appears to have been given to it. Satisfactory reagents. are available for the development of such structures in ferrous and most non-ferrous metals, but those applied to aluminum and its alloys, i. e., alcoholic or aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide or hydrofluoric acid are not entirely satisfactory. Hanson and Archbutt,2 in speaking of these two reagents, state that "These two reagents give fairly satisfactory results, but they sometimes produce badly tarnished surfaces from which the surface deposit is difficult to remove." It has been our experience that neither of these reagents is to be entirely relied on for developing structures suitable for study or photography. This means that when the etch fails to produce satisfactory results the, specimen must be repolished, through the 000-paper at least, and then etched with another reagent. This procedure entails a con¬siderable loss of time, and the final results may not be all that might be desired. However, the reagent to be described, although not a panacea for all etching troubles, has improved results so markedly that it is felt that it is worth offering as a grain-size etch generally applicable to aluminum and aluminum alloys. Czochralski3 in 1915 mentioned the application of a solution of 10 to 20 c. c. concentrated hydrofluoric acid in 100 c.c. absolute alcohol, etching in this reagent being followed by dipping in concentrated hydrochloric-acid solution.

Activities of COO in the three solid solution series COO-MgO, COO-MnO, and COO-"FeO" have been determined at 1200°C by equilibrating oxide samples with a metal phase (cobalt or a Co-Fe alloy) in atmospheres of known oxygen activities. The systems COO-MgO and COO-MnO are ideal, within limits of experimental error, whereas the system COO-"FeO" shows a slight positive deviation from ideality at the temperature of this investigation. KNOWLEDGE of activities of oxide components in solid solutions is necessary for the calculation of the cation distribution among coexisting oxide phases in many important metallurgical, ceramic, and geochemical systems. Very few activity-composition curves are available for such systems at the present time. A start on the prodigious job of obtaining such data has been made by studies of solid solutions with simple sodium chloride type structure containing NiO or "FeO" as a component.1-3 The present paper describes similar studies for solid solutions with sodium chloride type structure containing COO as a component. For the systems COO-MgO and COO-MnO, the activity solid solution is determined by the equation Here po and are the oxygen activities of the gas phase in equilibrium with the phase assemblages metallic cobalt plus oxide solid solution, and metallic cobalt plus pure COO, respectively. In the system CoO-"Fe07', the metal phase is a Co-Fe alloy rather than pure cobalt. In this case the activity of COO in the oxide solid solution is calculated from the equation where a& is the activity of cobalt in the metal phase. Because the system Co-Fe is close to ideal4 and the metal phase appearing in the present work contains less iron than cobalt even at the lowest COO concentrations of the oxide phases used may be set equal to N . In order to explore electrically a terrain composed of a succession of horizontal beds, a current of known intensity i is caused to flow between two grounds A and B, and the resultant drop of potential , caused by the resistance of the earth, is measured between two given points in the soil, M and N. In practice it is convenient to choose the two points M and N so that they lie on the line AB and their midpoint coincides with the middle 0, of that line, although this is not imperative. When the lengths L and I of the two lines AB and MN are varied, equations are obtained which may be solved for the resistivity p of the subsoil at various depths. Recall briefly that the formula 4 x l gives the average resistivity, in the horizontal direction, of a layer of earth which extends to a depth1 about equal to L/4. This elementary concept is adequate for numerous practical applications. Nevertheless, it must be said that, in many cases, a rigorous mathematical analysis may be made, provided it is always a question of homogeneous, superposed horizontal beds. The authors expect to publish, later on, appropriate methods of calculation for some specific cases.

The grain shape of the carbide in nickel-bowled ad cobalt-bonded titanium carbides was studied by microgiaphic examination, and the influcence of sintering atmosphere, sintering substl-after, ami the amount of metal binder on the grain shape was determined. If was found that the Carbide grain cross sections in the nickel and cobalt cermets ranged from round to angular, depending on the sintering conditions. The spheroidization of the carbides in both cobalt-bonded and nickel-bonded titanium carbides may be attribicted to oxygen. In the course of studies on titanium-carbide base cermets, various investigators have reported on the shape of the carbide grains, and it was noticed that grain shapes were obtained which were either spheroids, or polygons with rounded or square edges. It was also noted that the shapes of the carbide grains changed with time or composition. skolnickl showed that the titanium-carbide grains. after infiltration in vacuum with nickel tended to spheroi- dize with time. The titanium-carbide skeleton was located on a beryllia plate during infiltration. Gur-land,' who studied the microstructure of titanium carbide-cobalt compacts, showed that the carbide grains are round after 1 hr at 1450oC in a hydrogen atmosphere and angular after 7 hr at the same temperature. Goetzel3 has found that the carbide grains in compacts with a high binder content. 40 to 60 pet. tend to be spheroidized. whereas Blumenthal and silverman4 pointed out that the higher binder contents could yield either round or rectangular grains with rounded edges. depending on the nature of the binder. IN the production of alloys by powder metallurgical processes it is often necessary or desirable to include one or more components that tend to form very stable oxides. Included in this group of metals are aluminum, manganese, magnesium, silicon, and a few others. In many cases it is not necessary for the sintered compact to have full density and the other physical characteristics of a cast alloy and in that event no undue precautions need be taken. If, however, it is required that the sintered part be entirely homogeneous, and have maximum density and physical properties, some method must be found to reduce the surface films of oxide, which are always present on the metals, and for the metals mentioned above this is always extremely difficult, if not impossible. Since the production of high-density alloys is of particular interest to powder metallurgists, some experiments were undertaken to devise methods of reducing the refractory oxides. For this work, alloys of iron, nickel, and aluminum were chosen because aluminum oxide is one of the most stable oxides and because these alloys in the right compositions form excellent permanent magnets. All of the pertinent properties of the magnets could be accurately and delicately measured by density measurements and magnetic tests of sufficient scope to give a complete demagnetization curve. From such a curve the maximum coercive force, residual magnetism, and energy products could be obtained and compared with the same properties for a cast material. Any lack of homogeneity, density, or solid diffusion would be immediately apparent as a decrease in the magnetic properties. NATURE AND REMOVAL OF SURFACE BARRIERS The early work of the present investigation was based upon published processes.* In the published information it was claimed that by intimately mixing iron, nickel, and iron-aluminum alloy (50 per cent Fe, 50 per cent Al) powders, compressing such a mixture into the desired shape and size, and then sintering (heating to a temperature below the melting point of the component metals) in hydrogen at 1200°C. or higher, a sound, homogeneous article could be made having the desired physical size, shape, and strength, and good magnetic characteristics. However, this early work showed clearly that something in the powder compress was inhibiting diffusion and the process was almost entirely unworkable. In the initial phase of the investigation samples of iron powder, nickel powder, and iron-aluminum alloy powder were pressed into separate bars and sintered in hydrogen. The Roan Antelope Smelter commenced operations in October, 1931. As originally designed, its equipment consisted of one reverberatory furnace, 120 X 25 ft, two Peirce-Smith converters 12 X 20 ft, and one straight line casting machine. Since that time the following additions have been made: One reverberatory furnace 120 ft X 28 ft ('934) One reverberatory furnace 95 ft X 28 ft (1943) Two 12 X 20 ft Peirce-Smith converters (1934 and 1938) One 13 X 30 ft holding furnace (1938) One straight line casting machine and 2 ladle tilting quadrants (1934) The metallurgy of the smelting process is comparatively simple. However, there are several features of operation which are uncommon to most copper smelters: (I) The high grade of concentrate treated; this has always been about 50 pct copper. (2) The high flux burden on the charge. This is necessary because of the deficiency of bases in the concentrate and the high alumina content of the concentrate. (3) The frequent necessity of adding coal to the furnace charge to control the matte grade. (4) The high grade of matte produced. This has led to unusual converter problems. From the commencement of operations, the ore mined has come from the Roan Basin orebody. The concentrate produced from this ore consists mainly of chalcocite and shale with small proportions of other copper minerals. As mining operations extend to the Roan Extension orebody, the proportions of bornite and chalcopyrite in the concentrate will increase with a corresponding decrease in the copper content of the concentrate. Because of the concentrate grade the capacity of the reverberatory furnaces in terms of tons of copper produced per ton of coal burned is high. This ratio is usually over 2.2, and on especially favourable runs has reached 2.6. Reference to Table I shows that the iron content of the concentrate is unusually low. Only part of this iron is available for slag formation, the balance going to the matte. To make up this deficiency in bases, limerock is added to the furnace charge. This flux ensures a slag that is of the correct silicate degree, is suficiently fluid, of low specific gravity, and it counteracts the thickening effect of the alumina present. An ample supply of flux is obtainable from Ndola, 22 miles distant by rail. Although the reverberatory slag has a high copper content, the slag fall is low and the copper loss in the slag now rarely exceeds 1.0 pct of the total copper charged. The blister copper shipped is of such purity that only one fire refining operation has been necessary to produce a wirebar with properties comparable to electrolytic copper. Bismuth has always been the most troublesome impurity and consequently the problem of its control in the finished product has been of prime importance. A comprehensive survey is made of the status of the asbestos industry as it relates to marketing the product. Included are descriptions of the various types of asbestos and the grading and classification systems used. The uses of asbestos, distribution practices, and types of ore bodies are all related to marketing. World production, the producers and their capacities and world consumption for 1966-67 are summarized and statistical data are included. Asbestos is a general term describing a family of fibrous minerals of the serpentine and amphibole mineral groups. Asbestos has a long history going back to the time of the Egyptians, when it was used as a lamp wick. The commercial mining of asbestos started in Canada, Russia, and Africa in the 1800's, and the first asbestos products were made in Italy and Russia. The five main types of asbestos are: chrysotile, accounting for 95% of the total mined, amosite, crocido-lite, anthophyllite, and tremolite. Canada, Russia, and Africa are the major producers of asbestos. The commercial utility of asbestos was at first based on the heat resistance of the fibrous mineral in the form of packing, at the start of the industrial revolution. Its current utility is based more on its ability to reinforce binders such as portland cement, rubber, and plastics. Its inertness to the chemical nature of most binders is unique. Most important is its ability to maintain its reinforcing utility when the product is exposed to weather and soil conditions as in asbestos cement boards and pipe, and heat, pressure, and chemical exposure as in brake linings and gaskets and packings. The mineral asbestos is also unique because its fibrous form permits it to be spun and woven to cloth or formed into paper. Many asbestos applications are critical to national defense and at the present time, there are no satisfactory substitutes. Grading and Classification Canadian chrysotile asbestos fiber is graded and priced by length since basically the longer the fiber the higher the utility. The Canadian asbestos industry does not, however, classify the fiber by direct length measurement, but by a dry screening test. The method is called the Quebec Standard Screen (QS) test. One pound of fiber is mechanically shaken in four vertically stacked sieve boxes. The relative proportions remaining on the sieves defines the grade. The longer the fiber, the larger is the amount that stays on the top coarse screens and the less on the lower, finer mesh screens. Other tests can be used to further define the length distribution of fiber such as the wet screen Bauer McNett and the Suter Webb Comb (3 group only). The Canadian grading system divides the milled fibers into 5 main groups: group 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, with 3 group being the longest, and 7 the shortest. Each group is further divided to subgrades, identified in each group by the letters A to Z, with "A" the longest and "Z" the shortest. See Appendix 1 for the Canadian QS classification system. The Russians also use the QS test on chrysotile. The Africans classify their chrysotile into grades similar to Canadian. The African crocidolite and amosite, however, are classified into actual length groups such as l to 2 in. and 2 to 3 in. Amosite and crocidolite are generally longer than chrysotile but also more brittle. Milled asbestos is not composed of staple length fibers like fiber glass or cotton, but of a mixture or blend of fibers ranging from long to short. Milled asbestos has a fiber length distribution similar to the particle size distribution of a powder. For example, the longest group 3 chrysotile grades have a high percentage of the longest fibers (1/2 to 3/4 in.) and low percentage of short fibers (0.003 in.). The figures in Table 1 give the approximate length distribution of the longest, middle, and shortest groups. A second and further method of classifying fiber is the degree to which the fiber bundles are separated to form a larger number of smaller diameter bundles. This property is normally described as the degree of fiberization, openness or surface area. Air permeability tests are used to measure surface area. Asbestos pro-

The number of wells completed in Ohio during I940 was about 20 per cent more than during the preceding year, the comparative totals being 1020 and 1228. Of the 1940 completions, 327 were oil wells, 491 gas wells, and 410 dry. The completions for the past five years, divided into oil wells, gas wells, and dry holes, are shown in Table 2. Wells drilled deeper and input wells in water-flood areas are not included in the tabulation. The annual production of oil has decreased steadily in Ohio from the maximum of 23,941,000 bbl. produced in 1896. Table 3 shows the quantities of oil produced in the last five years. In 1940, the total was 3,052,000 bbl., produced by about 25,500 wells. The number of wells and the approximate quantities by grades are shown in Table I. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the forecast capability of the econometric model of the cobalt industry1/ as utilized by the Federal Preparedness Agency. Forecasts from this model are illustrated from the premise that the leading producer continues production of cobalt. An alternate forecast is presented where the model structure is altered to reflect the condition where the leading producer leaves the market. All estimations and forecasts presented here are shown for illustrative purposes. The cobalt industry is highly concentrated; one company, owned by the Zaire government, accounts for approximately three-fifths of world production. The cobalt supply outside of Zaire is determined by the level of activity of copper or nickel markets, as cobalt is mined as a by-product of copper or nickel. The demand for cobalt reflects a diversified usage pattern; cobalt is used mainly in heat and corrosion-resistant materials, high- strength materials and permanent magnets. According to 1974 U.S. consumption data superalloys accounted for 22%, magnetic alloys 18%, cutting and wear-resistant materials 13%, and catalyst 7%. Foreign consumption is probably similar in terms of usage categories, but the relative order of the categories is in variance.2/ The Cobalt Model The cobalt model's object is to explain consumption, supply and price movements by utilizing statistically estimated equations. Central to the econometric model is the role of Zaire as the profit-maximizing "dominant firm". Zaire sets the price that is most profitable for itself. The oxidation rates of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopy-rite, chalcocite, covellite, bortzite, galem, sphalerite, and stibnite have beet2 carefully compared at 120 oC, using aqueous phosphate solutions buffered at pH 2.7, 7.1, and 11.2 as zvell as in 1.0 M NaOH and in am~onia-containing solutions. Under conditions of these studies, variations in rates of more than a factor of two per unit of mineral surface area were not observed for different minerals in phosphate buffered solutions, except that pyrrhotite showed unusually rapid oxidation rates In acid solutions, and stibnite showed very rapid oxidation rates in basic solutions. In caustic solutions, oxidation vates varied considerably, the most rapid being for pyrite and the slowest for sphalerite. In the presence of ammonia, only copper minerals showed more vapid oxidation rates in neutral solutions. Oxidation rates were measured on the basis of oxygen-consunzption rates per unit surface area of exposed mineral, using equivalent surface areas, mineral mesh sizes, pulp densities, agitation, and oxygen pressure. OXIDIZING pressure leaching of sulfide minerals has been a commercial method of treating concentrates of nickel, cobalt, and copper for over a decade, and recently the treatment of lead and zinc concentrates,' and even the recovery of sulfur from pyrrhotite by such processes, have been shown to be technically feasible.' Furthermore, the leaching of uranium ores by solutions acidified through the oxidation of pyrite and other sulfides present in the ore is commercially practicable.3 5 The mechanisms by which sulfide minerals oxidize in aqueous environments are not yet understood. However, certain generalities can be made for systems containing no unusual reagents, in which oxygen is the oxidizing agent. In acid solutions the oxidation of many sulfide minerals leads to the formation of elemental sulfur.8'7 The attack of some sulfides, notably galena (PbS), sphalerite (ZnS), and pyrrhotite (FeS), at temperatures below about 110°C leads to an almost quantitative conversion of the sulfide mineral to elemental sulfur according to the equation: On the other hand pyrite (FeS2) and copper minerals do not yield elemental sulfur quantitatively. Not more than 50 pct of the sulfur in pyrite is converted to the elemental form in acid oxidation, and this percentage is lowered by higher temperatures and possibly higher oxygen pressures.8'9 Copper minerals sometimes yield elemental sulfurlo'" but, since sulfur can reduce cupric ions with the precipitation of CuS or Cu2S, it is not likely that elemental sulfur is obtained in good yield. In acid solutions sulfur that is not converted to the elemental form always appears as sulfate salts or sulfuric acid. Sulfide minerals that yield elemental sulfur nearly quantitatively on oxidation in acid solutions tend to generate H2S when the conditions are not oxidizing. However, although it has been suggested that H2S is an essential intermediate in the mechanism of oxidation," this is doubtful because it is oxidized very slowly by oxygen. In basic solutions elemental sulfur is never formed, as predicted by thermodynamical considerations, summarized in the form of a potential-pH diagram in Fig. 1. However in neutral and basic solutions, unstable forms of sulfur not shown in the diagram appear during oxidation, notably thiosulfate (SOT-) and polythi-onates (S,O;-, x = 2 to 6).l3,l4 On prolonged oxidation only hexavalent sulfur as sulfate (SOi-) or sulfamate (NHzSO;) is found to remain, the latter appearing only in the presence of ammonia. The oxidation kinetics for thiosulfate by oxygen are the subject of a separate paper,'5 and were studied on the presumption that thiosulfate may, in fact, be a primary oxidation product for sulfide minerals, at least in neutral and basic solutions. A survey of the literature indicated that comparative oxidation rates for different sulfide minerals were needed to establish the role of the mineral structure and its thermodynamic properties on the oxidation rates and mechanisms.

PREPARATION of mechanically loaded coal in mines where seams contain considerable impurities is a subject that requires careful consideration before machines are installed, unless provision is made at the tipple for its preparation. Conditions vary a great deal in the different seams, so much so that a mechanical loader may be unsuccessful in one seam and yet the same machine may make good in another where conditions are different. The effect of impurities in the coal seam on mechanical loading will also vary according to the thickness of the seam. In thin seams impurities will be more difficult to remove than from thick seams, as will appear later. For the past several years the New River Co. has done considerable experimenting with loading equipment and during this process has changed from one machine to another.

WHEN I was in South Africa during the latter part of 1904, there were three known tin-fields, which may be called the Cape Town, the Bushveld and the Swaziland fields. THE. CAPE TOWN TIN-FIELD. This district is situated near Kuils river, 20 miles west of Cape Town, and 5 miles from Kuils River station on the Cape Town & Stellenbosch Railway. The deposits are in granite, intrusive in the Malmesbury beds, which are supposed to be of Silurian or Cambrian age. The granite, resisting denudation better than the surrounding shales,, has formed low-lying hills, the highest of which, the Bottlelary Berg, is 1,510 ft. above sea-level. , The rock consists of quartz, orthoclase feldspar and biotite mica; tourmaline is also present. The feldspar occurs in large crystals. The rock is generally decomposed on the surface, and the decomposition sometimes extends as deep as 100 ft. This formation-granite intrusive in Silurian shales-extends for many miles to the northeast, but so far as I know the Kuils River deposits are the only ones now known to occur in it, though probably further prospecting will reveal other deposits. This particular discovery was accidental;. alluvial tin being found in the course of boring for oil. The Kuils River Deposit. This comprises both lode and alluvial tin. The lode strikes N. and S., and dips about 30° E. into the hill. It is 5 ft. wide, and composed of dense white quartz, in which pinkish-gray cassiterite is distributed in large crystals. The vein also contains considerable quantities of wolfram. Fig. 1 is a rough plan of the relative positions of the lode and the alluvial deposit, the latter, as shown, following the course of a stream, while the lode crops out on the hillside

The unit agreement for the Wertz Dome field, Wyoming, was approved by the Acting Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior on November 4, 1937, effective on December 1, 1937. The stated objectives of the agreement are to conserve and put to beneficial use all oil and gas produced; to make possible a uniform withdrawal of oil and gas in order to maintain equalized reservoir pressures; to provide for an orderly determination of the structural features of the productive horizons; and to permit the injection of gas for pressure maintenance. The purpose of this paper is to show by a discussion of the problems involved and the engineering practices employed by the unit operator, how well the objectives of the unit agreement have been accomplished in the development and production of oil and gas from the field. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT The Wertz Dome oil and gas field is located 88 miles southwest of Casper and 38 miles north and westerly from Rawlins, Wyoming. It is served by a state secondary oiled road connecting with U. S. Highway No. 220 at Lamont, a distance of 3 miles from the field. It has been a producing field for 27 years, first as an important producer of gas and more recently of oil. The Producers and Refiners Corp. completed Well No. 1, NE1/4SW1/4 sec. 7, T. 26 N., R. 89 W., the first productive well in the field, in September. 1921, in the Muddy sandstone of Upper Cretaceous age, at a depth of 3435 feet for an initial production of 42,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day. In 1922 pipe lines were laid to Casper, Wyoming, for supplying fuel to the Standard of Indiana refinery, 'the adjoining town of Mills. and the Producers and Refiners Corp. pump station No. 6 in Mills; and to Parco (now Sinclair), Wyoming, for supplying that refinery with fuel. The gasoline content of the gas was extracted in an absorption plant located near the town of Mills. No compressors were used as the line pressure was sufficiently high to flow the gas through the absorbers. As high as 30,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day were treated in the plant extracting 6000 gallons of gasoline. In September 1937, the pipe line was discontinued and the plant was dismantled at which time 61,000,000,000 cu. ft. of gas had been produced from the seven Muddy, Cloverly, and Sundance gas wells drilled in the field. Of this volume of gas 800,000,000 cu. ft. were produced from the Frontier formation, 34,200,000,000 cu. ft. from the Muddy sandstone, 24,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Cloverly, locally called Dakota, and 2,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Sundance formation. The pipe line was discontinued because of the near depletion of the gas reserves in Wertz and nearby fields, and hecause of the local field requirements demanding the retention of the remaining gas reserves. In December 1936, the Sinclair Wyoming Oil Co. completed Well No. 10, SE1/4NW1/4 sec. 7. T. 26 N., R. 89 W., at a depth of 5886 feet. as the first Tensleep sand producer with an intial of 1700 barrels of oil per day. The well was originally drilled only 14 feet into the sand and in August 1939 was deepened to a depth of 6161 feet, 289 feet in the sand, and the daily produe tion increased to 8350 barrels of oil. In February 1948 Well No. 22, SE1/4 SE1/4 sec. 1. T. 26 N., R. 90 W., was deepened from the Tensleep to the Basal Amsden sand and completed at a depth of 6635 feet for an intial of 600 barrels of oil per day in the Basal Amsden. In April 1948, Well No. 2. SW1/4 NE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N., R. 90 W.. was deepened from the Tensleep to the Madison limestone and was completed at a depth of 7193 feet for an intial of 1145 barrels of oil per day in the Madison. Well No. 26, SE1/4SE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N.. R. 90 W., was deepened from the Ten-sleep to the Cambrian and in October 1948 it was completed in the Cambrian for an intial of 277 barrels of oil per day. GEOLOGY AND PRODUCTIVE ACREAGE The surface is Steele shale of Upper Cretaceous age, covered in part by gravel beds.
