A DIATREME is a hole blown through a rock by gases, presumably of volcanic origin. Not all pipes of ore have formed by deposition of metals in such openings, but a con-siderable number have so formed. In this paper are described peculiar vein patterns that are believed to be incipient diatremes or "perforation pipes." Grading into this group is one showing thorough brecciation without rotation of fragments and into the latter a group of ore pipes showing brecciation with rotation of fragments-many of them with well rounded fragments. Also, volcanic craters or volcanic necks are explosion pipes. These may carry ore deposits along their contacts and some carry deposits within the pipes. As new data appear this group becomes increasingly impressive. It has been shown that veins are concentrated in and about cupolas of batholiths and that such veins commonly lienearly parallel to the long axes of cupolas as these are shown on plans. It would be supposed that conical cupolas would have radial patterns, but few vein systems exhibit radial patterns. It is probable that explo-sion pipes also may form in areas above conical cupolas. From these the gases escape more violently because the loads above them are less than above an elongated cupola where larger bodies of rock are affected. The hypothesis is sound mechanically, for the top of an elongated cupola is a line whereas the top of a conical cupola is a point.

I T is generally accepted that no method of coal cleaning except froth flotation is effective in cleaning dust. In the majority of coals mined in the United States the dust sizes contain a high percentage of impurities, hence the removal of the dust from the coarse sizes lowers the impurity content of these sizes. Dedusted coal is desired as a means of providing a better feed to cleaning plants because of increased efficiency in both dry and wet plants. In dry-cleaning plants, a dedusted feed makes for a pervious and uni¬form bed. With a dusty feed the fines tend to segregate in the feed stream and pass en masse over the air separators, causing a lack of uniform aeration and fluidity of the bed necessary to efficient cleaning. In wet-cleaning plants deducting of the feed often decreases the sludge problem to the point of eliminating the necessity of wasting wash water. It may be advantageous to eliminate sludge-settling equipment in favor of dedusting equipment, to provide the advantages of a dedusted feed to the wet-washing process. Dedusting advantages may include: (1) the removal of fusain, especially advantageous in plants washing coal intended for metallurgical coke; (2) prevention of the gradual build-up of solids in the wash water, with a consequent variation in the washing ability of the system; (3) prevention of the loss of dust to the sludge ponds, providing instead a fuel for local consumption or special markets.

NATURAL petroleum gas occurring in the oil-bearing reservoirs is found to exist either as free gas associated with the oil and/or in solution in the oil. In some virgin fields practically no free gas is encountered under the reservoir conditions of pressure and temperature, although in other fields a considerable section of the ``pay" horizon is occupied by free gas. In other words, a given oil field may or may not have a gas cap before the exploitation takes place. However, when the reservoir pressure is reduced to a point below the critical saturation pressure by withdrawals of fluids from the producing formation, the gas dissolved in the oil inevitably begins to come out of solution and becomes free gas. Under the con-trolled methods of production and drilling, a portion of this gas is pro-duced with the oil to the surface and a portion of it remains within the reservoir to accumulate at higher structural levels toward which it migrates by virtue of its low specific gravity. The rate of growth of a gas cap in a-given structure depends primarily upon the rate of decline in the reservoir pressure. If the rate of pressure decline is rapid, the gas cap likewise will grog rapidly. On the other hand, shrinkage in the gas-cap area was noted in some fields in which reservoir pressures were increasing.

I HAVE taken the liberty of calling the researches herein mentioned industrial, to distinguish them from those strictly scientific, where every known appliance is used to insure accuracy in determining principles. The industrial researches are made to ascertain wherein we have failed to embody, in practice, the principles which have been fully demonstrated by the more purely scientific investigations. So far the researches have been mostly confined to the conditions of combustion as used in locomotive furnaces, although we have examined, to some extent, furnaces under marine and stationary boilers. The products of complete combustion are gases, and, knowing what we should have, it is at once shown by analyzing the products whether the desired reactions are taking place. In spite of imperfect furnaces, lack of system in the arrangement of grate-bars and exhaust nozzles, the results are not altogether vitiated, because the analyses are not closer than one-tenth of one per cent., as under the present conditions it is hardly possible to collect gas exactly under the same conditions at different times. All of our industrial operations have developed in the past few years so rapidly, nearly all of them paying, that, until within the past three years, comparatively little attention has been given to their economy outside of the profession. Great corporations have not asked and considered the question in earnest, can we utilize our heat so as to produce the same effect at less cost? The applications of heat are so extensive, entering into every branch of industry, the principal power used to carry on metallurgical processes, to conduct transportation, that its economical generation becomes of universal importance; in fact, its economical generation and application is the leading industrial question of the day. It is stated by those who have given the subject much attention, that in our best steam-engines not over 10 per cent of the theoretical value of the fuel is utilized, and upon locomotives it is far less, probably not exceeding under the most favorable circumstances 5 or 6 per cent. In recent experiments made with the dynagraph, in drawing trains upon the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway from Cleveland to Erie, 95i miles, we found the force required to draw a stock train of 709 tons to be 2,498,396,320 foot-pounds, exclusive of the force to move the locomotive itself. The permeability of sands and soils seems to be adequately de- scribed by Darcy's law, but the permeability of rocks is complicated by a number of factors related to the probability of crack intersections. During the last few years we have developed a statistical theory of fragmentation which has been successful in explaining the observed behavior of rocks. In this paper, a theory of permeability is developed which draws on the concepts employed in previous work. The permeability involves three factors, the average fluid flux per crack, the number of cracks per unit area, and the fraction of cracks that are not isolated. Probabilistic ideas are used in connection with the hydrodynamic theory of flow through a single crack to develop an integral expression for permeability. The result has the form of Darcy's law for anistropic media. Although the current work is motivated by the need to develop optimized oil-shale retorts, we believe that the theory can be applied to a variety of other problems.

THE technique of concentrating valuable minerals from lean ores by flotation depends upon the creation of a finite contact angle at the three-phase contact, mineral-water-air. If the mineral is completely wetted by the water phase, contact angle zero, there is no tendency for air bubbles to attach themselves to the mineral. However, when the contact angle is finite, the surface free energy of the system, water-air bubble-mineral particle, can be diminished by contact between the bubble and the particle, and if not too heavy the mineral will be levitated in the froth. With a few exceptions, all clean minerals are completely wetted by pure water. Thus the art of flotation consists in adding substances to the water to make a finite contact angle with the mineral to be floated, but to leave the other minerals with a zero contact angle. The contact angle concept and experimental measurements of contact angles have played important roles in flotation research for several decades.1-3 Nevertheless, there remain unanswered some basic questions as to the scientific significance of the contact angle and the nature of the processes by which flotation reagents affect contact angles.

The magnetostrictia of nickel after increasing amounts of plastic elongation was measured at field strengths up to 1500 oe. In addition, the residual stress was measured by means of X-ray line shifts. The observed decrease in magnetostriction following plastic strain is shown to be associated with residual compressive stress. If a metal bar, whose longitudinal axis is taken as the x direction, is plastically elongated in the x direction and then unloaded, X-ray diffraction measurements will indicate the presence of a residual compressive macrostress 0%. However, stress measurement by means of mechanical relaxation does not reveal any macrostress. In a previous paper1 the fictitious macrostress indicated by X-rays was ascribed to a particular distribution of micro-stress, namely, one in which the bulk of the material was stressed more or less uniformly in compression and a very small portion in tension. It was shown that this distribution would account for Neurath's measurements2 of magnetic losses in silicon steel, because of the effect of residual stress on magnetostriction. The present paper is concerned directly with magnetostriction, in nickel, and with the effect on magnetostriction of the residual stress created by plastic elongation. The residual stress was determined by measurements of X-ray line shifts. MATERIAL AND METHODS Commercially pure "A" nickel was investigated. Its nominal composition, in weight percent, is 99.4 Ni + Co, 0.2 Mn, 0.15 Fe, 0.1 Cu, 0.1 C, 0.05 Si, and 0.005 S. Magnetostriction was measured by means of SR-4 electrical-resistance strain gages mounted on specimens 1/4 in. sq and 8 in. long. Magnetic fields up to about 1500 ce were provided by a multilayer, non-cooled solenoid. A considerable amount of heat was developed at the higher field strengths, and, to avoid errors due to changes in the specimen temperature, the following procedure was adopted. Each measurement of the magnetostriction X at a particular field strength H was preceded by demagnetization and an adjustment of the strain indicator to zero; the field H was then quickly switched on and the strain read immediately. Curves of ? vs H were flat for field strengths above about 750 oe for all specimens, and this constant value of X was accordingly taken as the saturation magnetostriction ?s The X-ray measurements of residual stress were made with a Norelco diffractometer on specimens cut from flat bars 1 1/4 in. wide, 1/8 in. thick, and 12 in. long. These measurements were confined to lattice planes parallel to the surface of the specimen. Two reflections were studied: the 311 CrKß line at 28 = 157 deg, and the 420 CuKal line at 28 = 155 deg. The line centers were determined by fitting a parabola to the peak of the line, as suggested by Ogilvie3 and as modified by Koistinen and Marburger.4 The CuKa doublet from the plastically elongated specimens was first resolved by the Rachinger method5. WITH the advent of World War II, the need for agricultural products rose phenomenally and caused a similar increase in demand for plant foods of which phosphate rock is one of the more important raw materials. By the close of the war or shortly thereafter, all of the operating companies were expanding their production facilities. Many companies installed modern bulk material handling facilities. Designs varied, but were generally of the overhead trestle type of storing conveyors. American Cyanamid studied these various installations but was not satisfied with the conventional system because of high initial cost, increased maintenance problems in the way of painting structural steel that might be submerged in stored materials, and because of slightly increased operating costs. As a consequence of these economic analyses, conferences were held with the various conveyor manufacturers to develop a better method of storing and reclaiming. After considerable engineering study, one conveyor manufacturer suggested the unique system which was installed in 1950.

The great advance of the last twenty years in the specialization, delicacy and efficiency of ore-concentrating apparatus calls for a finer system of testing both the qualities of ores and the operations of machines in this department. In amalgamation, lixiviation and smelting, the daily employment of physical and chemical tests has been recognized as necessary, and the cost of the necessary laboratories and employees is cheerfully paid. But while much progress has been made in concentration (due, in a large degree, to the study of the subject in our technical schools), it is still too common in actual practice to follow the loose old method of roughly estimating, once for all, that a given ore " concentrates x tons into one," and resting on this assumption so long as that ore continues to be treated, while assays of the tailings from concentration are made from time to time, without exact determination of their quantity. The first step toward accuracy of control must be a more frequent and precise measurement of the quantity of concentrates from a given operation. This should be expressed in pounds per unit of one ton; and the variations shown in frequent determinations will furnish a constant check upon the character of the ore and the performance of the apparatus. But this is only a part of what should be constantly and systematically done to insure the best work upon a material which must vary continually, even though it come from one mine only. If, in any mill, appropriate laboratory-tests were made at least once a week, the labor and expense involved would be amply repaid by increased knowledge and control of the current operations. THIS work was undertaken with the object of collecting plant data on rod milling, making laboratory tests on representative samples of the various ores, and arriving at a basis for comparing the relative efficiencies of different mills operating on widely different materials and under varying conditions. These efficiencies consider only power consumption and do not include the other elements of operating costs. The over-all economic efficiency may be quite different from the consumption efficiencies with which this paper is concerned. It is hoped that these collected data will be of value in indicating the most favorable conditions of rod-mill operation. Operating-plant data on 14 different installations from 11 plants throughout the United States and Canada were collected, and laboratory tests were made on samples of these ores. The plant rod mills were all operated wet, and either in open circuit or with circulating loads so small as to be negligible. Data were obtained on one roll-crushing operation at the Utah Copper Co., for comparison. The rolls were operated wet in closed circuit with 10-mesh vibrating screens, and with a high circulating load averaging about 600 pct. This particular roll operation can be considered as a model of efficiency. The collected plant data are necessarily incomplete in some instances. Each ore was assigned a code number, and the name and location corresponding to the code number are listed in Table I when permitted. [ ] The power data in every instance refer to motor input. Net power was reported by the operator for samples I-39 and I-45, and this was increased by 20 pct to compensate for motor losses and power factor. WITH portions of two coal basins within its borders and a few scattered fields already developed, the question arises: What is the future of Ken-tucky as an oil-producing State? Is the long list of failures due to lack of 'commercial pools, or unintelligent prospecting? A study of its beds and irregularities of structure points not only to a large waste of development money on unpromising areas, but also to the presence of a few structures well worthy of development. The surface rocks of Kentucky show in succession more than 4,000 ft. of Paleozoic sediments and more than 2,000 ft. of Cretaceous, Tertiary, and more recent deposits. Folding and erosion have brought these beds to the surface, where they have been observed and studied: in detail by my associate, James H. Gardner, myself, and others. This has given opportunity to observe the beds offering suitable reservoirs and having the proper impermeable covering; also the mapping of outcrops and outcrop lines, taken in conjunction with available well records, indicates that certain areas are worth testing, and with even greater definiteness shows areas which should be excluded, as devoid of possibilities. West of the Tennessee River, Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Quaternary sediments occur so that all trace of ancient folding is obliterated, the sediments overlapping unconformably Mississippian rocks. This area embraces 2,000 square miles, or one-twentieth of the area of the State, the Paleozoic rocks covering the remainder. Since there is nothing upon which to base the location of tests for oil and gas in the Cretaceous-Tertiary beds of Kentucky, the Paleozoic area will be chiefly considered.

NOT much serious consideration was liven to the military aspects of raw materials before World War 1. Following the outbreak of war in Europe in 1914, however. this situation was promptly changed. Disruption of allied shipping and German submarine warfare soon cut off a substantial part of the material the United Staten was accustomed to receiving from overseas. At the same time, raw material requirements rose rapidly as the tempo of industrial preparedness was stepped up in anticipation of war. By April 1917, when we entered the war, serious shortages threatened and consideralde attention was being given to our "deficcient" raw materials. The term "war mineral," began to appear after we became active combatants. But there is no evidence that "strategics" and "critical." as now used, had entered the lexicon of our raw materials experts during the last war nor were there apparently any officially recog¬nized list or definitions of what con¬stituted war materials. According to G. A. Roush in his book, `'Strategic Mineral Supplies," C. K. Leith, while serving as mineral advisor to the War Industries Board. compiled the first unofficial list of deficient minerals in 1917.

MECHANICAL loading and conveying equipment has been available for the coal-mining industry for more than twenty years. The earlier equip-ment-was admittedly crude and ill-fitted to perform its intended functions, but there are available today a variety of mechanical loaders and conveyors which may be said to be almost on a par with coal-cutting machines. Despite the fact that such equipment is available and that better and other types of equipment are continually being developed, mechanical loading of coal cannot yet be said to be economically successful, except in a few special cases. It is not an accomplished fact in the sense that machine cutting of coal and electric haulage are accomplished facts and a part of accepted practice. There are two general opinions why we have failed to obtain better results with mechanical loading and con-veying equipment. The equipment manufacturers will say that coal-mine operators have generally failed to establish and maintain the conditions required for suc-cess. The coal-mine operator says that the equipment is not adapted to cope with his specific conditions to the extent required for economically successful results. Just what is the objective of this movement toward mechanical loading? We speak of mechanical loading in such a way as to lead one to believe that we are mere-ly seeking a mechanical equivalent of the human loader and his shovel. Really, we are impressed with the fact that the coal-mining industry has not advanced toward greater productive efficiency to anything like the degree achieved by practically all of the other productive in-dustries, and we are seeking the means to remedy this. We have seen the advantages which follow the intro-duction of coal-cutters and electric haulage-locomotives. The loading of coal is the one major operation in coal mining which has not been mechanized. We believe that a satisfactory, mechanical substitute for the man with the shovel will help us increase our productive efficiency to the same degree as has been accomplished in the other productive industries.

1. BRINELL tests at progressively increasing temperatures are given for a representative lead-base and a representative tin-base babbitt, showing that the former has superior resistance to deformation at the working temperatures of bearings. 2. Small squares of bearing bronze, tinned and then babbitted with a representative lead-base babbitt and a representative tin-base. babbitt were subjected to compressive loading. The lead-base babbitt showed less average compression than the tin-base babbitt. Compression did not materially increase the Brinell hardness of the babbitts. 3. A process and a tool are described for giving smoother and more accurate surfaces to bearings than has heretofore been possible. The following experiments have recently been carried out in the chemical laboratory of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. While the work is incomplete, it is described at the present time because data on the comparative merits of lead-base and tin-base babbitts are of interest in connection with the present shortage of tin.

IF IT IS true that Sir Walter Raleigh lost his head for his failure to find gold in the Guianas, the trumped up charge of "treason" might better have been "con-tributory negligence." That systematic investigation and development of the gold-bearing areas of both Dutch and French Guiana have not been accomplished is not due so much to the lack of gold as to the geo-graphical, physical and climatic conditions of the two colonies. The Dutch, as a people, are not prospectors. The French look upon "Cayenne," or French Guiana, as DJOEKA BOATS USED IN RIVER TRANSPORTATION. just what it is: a penal colony, which produces a certain amount of balata, gold and essential oils, all of which can be purchased from the natives with far less physical exertion than they can be secured from the "bush" or jungle. The colonies have had their gold "booms," and dur-ing these periods the production has increased to a considerable amount, but the hardships to be endured in reaching the fields, the cost of transporting tools and supplies, the ever-present fevers, the bite of the "57 varieties" of insects and, lastly but not leastly, the abundance of rum in the seaport towns, dampen the ardor of even the strongest; the production of gold is left to the "pork knocker" or illegal gold digger and to the comparatively few producing "mines."
