The first discovery of gold in Montana is credited to François Finlay, a half-breed, from the Red River country, in Canada; he went to California during the early days and learned there how to wash the gold from placer deposits; then, on his return, he crossed Montana and found gold on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, on Gold creek, a minor tributary of the Hell Gate river, in what is now Deer Lodge county. That was in 1852.* Finlay did not find enough gold to induce him to continue at work, but six years later a group of miners, led by the brothers James Stuart and Granville Stuart prospected on this same creek, obtaining about ten cents to the pan. They, however, were harassed by the Blackfeet Indians, and they were also handicapped by lack of proper tools; so they too desisted from further operations. Two years later, in 1860, Henry Thomas started to work on Gold creek with three sluice-boxes hewn out of green timber that he cut on the spot. With this simple apparatus he won from $1.50 to $2.00 per day. This may be considered the fist instance of systematic mining in Montana. Meanwhile the Stuarts went to Fort Bridger, in southwestern Wyoming, where they remained as traders until 1861, when, again lured by the gleam of gold, they returned to the valley of the Deer Lodge and resumed prospecting, using 10 sluice-boxes that were brought from Walla Walla, in Washington, 425 miles distant. The equations of heat conduction are numerically solved for two kinds of artificial freezing- mechanical freezing and liquid nitrogen freezing. A two dimensional finite difference model simulating the freezing field is developed. The procedure introduces a way to simulate the effect of latent heat released when water transforms from liquid to solid. The procedure also produces a way to calculate the harmonic mean of heat conductivity used when dealing with heterogeneous material. The theoretically derived temperature distributions in frozen soil are given and compared with measured data. An analysis made on the thermal design in shaft freezing. The average temperature of frozen soil is calculated by using numerical integration. The regularity of development of frozen soil radius is revealed and given in an appropriate mathematical model.

Combined loader and transport, the Gismo is now built for sale in one size, 5 to 6 tons. It will operate in a minimum opening of 7x7 ft and can be built to operate at lower heights. Where space limitations are not a factor it could be designed with much greater carrying capacity-12, 18, or 25 tons-to be powered with a standard heavier tractor. The Gismo is mounted on crawler tracks of the same design as the tracks of the small Allis- Chalmers HD-6B tractor used to power it. With the HD-6B tractor it will negotiate upgrades of 12 pct and downgrades of 20 pct. The next tractor size would make the device feasible for steeper grades or for a machine of larger capacity at moderate grades.

THE principle of sliding or graduation in royalties is accomplished either by the block, period, cumulative, or class method. The block method calls for a very low royalty rate on all oil produced up to. a certain amount. This amount would normally be that which is believed to suffice to repay the cost of the well. A higher rate would be charged after the well is making a profit. This method, common in many industries, is peculiarly inadaptable to any industry such as this where the productivity per day of the units gradually and inevitably decreases. This, for reasons given later, is because it forces an early abandonment of the well and so offends against conservation. In the period method, the royalty rate is changed by some definite amount when the well produces less than a specified quantity per day or other given unit of time. While simple to explain, it operates badly because a great deal is made to depend upon a small reduction in production, whereas the reduction as a matter of fact declines rather erratically owing to the exigency of lease management, connecting of tankage, and vagaries of the gaugers. These disadvantages are obviated by the cumulative method. In this method, all the production less than a certain amount per week has one rate of royalty, or none at all, and the oil produced in excess of that amount pays an additional rate of royalty. In the long run the calculation is probably no greater than with the period method, for simple tables will be published and printed in the oil papers that can be cut out, enabling quick readings to be made. Even without the table the calculation is easy with the few royalty rates, two or three, which would be used. In this method, the amount paid in royalty declines gradually, rather than suddenly as in the period method.

In airborne gravity surveys effects of acceleration and irregular movements of the aircraft must be balanced out or overcome. The gradient of vertical gravity is recorded, therefore, by using two masses instead of one. As the amplitude variations are infinitesimal and difficult to measure accurately, at of gradient during flight is positive or negative. The positive portions of the pattern can then be indicated and contoured. Even with these simplifications, the source of energy must be exceptionally stable. General Principles: In the conventional gravimeter the weight of a standard mass is determined at a number of selected points within the survey area. In most systems weight is determined by comparing the gravity pull with extension or torque produced in a wire spring. The instruments employed are sensitive to the slightest movement; they cannot be used on a moving platform unless velocity is kept strictly uniform.

The Bond Work Index has been used for many years to estimate the power requirement of a material with known work index. The index is determined by a completely empirical test and no logical base for its use has been formulated. However, consideration of grinding as a unit operation which can be mathematically treated offers the prospect of considerably more accurate design and mill power estimation when sufficient data on large-scale mills becomes available. The interrelation of the Bond type with the unit operation approach is discussed.

The propagation of pressurized fractures across a frictional interface is discussed, with emphasis on the case where an offset, or step, in the crack is produced. Theoretically, the steps can occur at regions of reduced shear strength along the interface. As a fracture is propagated toward a weak zone, extensional strain is concentrated at the edges of the zone where higher shear stresses can be sustained. Thus, when the fracture intersects the weak zone, it can be reinitiated at some small distance away on the opposite wall of the interface. The phenomenon has been studied through numerical modeling and laboratory experiments of the hydraulic fracturing process. Field observation of natural step cracks indicates that the mechanism is applicable to the genesis of jointing patterns in rock. Such features should not be confused, therefore, with steps caused by shear displacement of an interface.

THE preliminary study of electrochemical desul-furization performed by Ohtani and Gokcen1 left a number of points concerning the process to be investigated. Two of these were i) the determination of the effect of greater current and voltage on the desulfurizing Flower of acid slags (% CaO/% SiO2- 1) and ii) the possibility of the loss of silica in slag by the reactions 2C (in metal) + SiO2 (slag) = Si (in metal) + 2CO(g) and C + SiO2 (in slag) = SiO(g) + cO(g) proceeding to a point at which the composition of the slag was sufficiently altered toward the basic side so a1.s to noticeably affect the rate of de-sulfurization. The apparatus and the procedure used in the present investigation were the same as those used by Ohtani and Gokcen, except the control circuit was connected to 120 v dc instead of 24 v dc and thereby allowed greater freedom in choosing the values of both current and voltage. The graphite crucible containing the melt and serving as the cathode was 3-in. high, and was of 1 1/2-in. ID with a graphite bar of 3/8-in. diam and 8-in. length threaded into the bottom for electrical connection. VANADIUM is generally spoken of as a rare element; but, even in the light of our resources as known a couple of years ago, this description could be accepted in a qualified sense only. In fact, vanadium is very widely distributed, being a constituent of most clays, while even caustic soda has been shown to contain almost regularly a minute proportion of it, although the quantity in each case is so small as to render impracticable the extraction of the metal there from with profit. The opening-up of a large deposit of vanadium sulphide ore in South America has put a new phase on the commercial outlook of vanadium, the technical value of which for the improvement of steel has been proved by rigorous scientific investigation.
