The problem of recovery of cobalt products from poorly oxidised nickel ores (Kempirsaisk deposit) and pyrite concentrates with a low content of cobalt (Sokolovsk-Sarbaisky deposit) has not been solved to the present time in Kazakstan. The balance reserves of nickel ore of the Kempirsaisky deposit make up more than 35 million tons with a nickel content of 1.13 per cent and cobalt content of 0.05 per cent; besides there are 110 millions tons of out-balance ores (Anon, 1995). In a tailing dump of Sokolovsk-Sarbaisk Mining and Productional Association more than 320 million tons of tailings of wet magnetic separation have accumulated, which contain 7.2 per cent of sulphur, 0.022 per cent of cobalt, 0.012 per cent of nickel, 0.094 per cent of copper, 0.079 per cent of zinc, 16.45 per cent of iron, and from which a high quality pyrite concentrate car) he separated through flotation, containing 48 - 50 per cent of sulphur, 44.15 per cent of iron, 0.141 per cent of cobalt, 0.07 per cent of nickel, and 0.10 per cent of copper. The well-known technological flow charts for cobalt and nickel recovery from the tailings of sulphide-magnetite ores dressing (to give pyrite concentrate) and from oxidised nickel ores, are not profitable at the existing prices for metals, but are not worthless and require significant capital investments for the realisation of their value. The flow chart `sulphate roasting - leaching - solution processing' is used widely for combined processing of cobalt-containing pyrite ores and concentrates.

Fine coal particles have been examined with respect to dustiness and its connection with various physical and chemical properties. It appears that a given coal will tend to be dusty ifthe moisture content is low and if the inert maceral content and overall rank are high. The hydrophobicity ofa coking coal (Young-Wallsend) and a steaming coal (Blair Athol) was examined in detail by a dynamic contact angle technique. The YoungWallsend coal had a higher contact angle, on average, than the Blair Athol sample. This result has important implications for dust suppression and associated processes.

The authors were engaged to optimise a traditional rebar cage reinforced concrete segmental lining by means of finite element analysis (FEA) using macro synthetic fibres for the Shanghai metro extension. The aim of this study was to reduce or entirely replace the original steel reinforcement of the segmental lining, in order to make the precast production process faster and more economic. The outer diameter of the tunnel was 6200 mm, the thickness of the segments was 350 mm.The numerical calculations were performed by Atena Finite Element software, which is based on the combination of Menétrey-William and Rankine failure surfaces on the compression and tension sides respectively. The effect of the macro synthetic fibres was modelled as tension stiffening on the tension surface.A one-to-one full scale model of an assembled tunnel ring using the original reinforcement cages was tested at Tongji University in Shanghai, July 2013. The ring was tested to differing load levels where load and displacement were measured until failure. The author’s first step was to calculate the real displacement characteristics of the original reinforced concrete (RC) ring, then calculate the numerically modelled version, so as to compare them. The material parameters of the concrete and rebar used had been determined through basic material tests conducted at the Tongji University. (Bi, Liu and Wang, in press).The numerical modelling undertaken has shown good correlation with the full-scale physical test results. Optimisation of the lining reinforcement was achieved through the addition of fibres, resulting in a substantial reduction of the steel rebar cages. Several results have been computed with the numerical model using different dosages of macro synthetic fibres, showing that the mass of steel reinforcement could be reduced by 50 and 75 per cent respectively.CITATION:Juhasz, K P, Nagy, L and Winterberg, R, 2014. Productivity and fuel consumption of the blast furnace is driven by the quality of the iron ore sinter, which in turn is related to the sinter mineralogy. The sintering conditions including temperature and gas composition have a significant influence on the formation of melt and finally the mineralogy of the sinter. In this work, analogue sinter tablets were produced from iron ore fines in a laboratory furnace with tightly controlled temperature profile and oxygen partial pressure in the gas. The mineralogy of the sinters was analysed using reflected light microscopy. The results showed that increasing thermal enclosed area (area enclosed by heating and cooling curve above a reference temperature) reduces primary hematite and platy silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) contents. This is attributed to increasing melt formation, leading to greater assimilation of the iron ore particles. Lower magnetite was found for tablets with greater median pore size, which is thought to be due to greater oxidation of magnetite to hematite during cooling in air. It was also found that higher alumina content was found to result in more SFCA formation under the same heating/cooling conditions, whereas tablets with higher goethite had higher assimilation and produced more secondary hematite on cooling. Finally, it is necessary to relate the enclosed area to the temperature at which the melt formation becomes significant which strongly depends on chemical composition of the ore studied.

Waste water reuse from municipal and industrial effluents is becoming increasingly important in many areas around the world. Water scarcity, local regulation and environmental impact are driving many industries like coal and copper mines to reuse the large volume of waste water they produce. For example, the Chinese coal industry generated about 4.2 billion tons of mine waste water in 2005 of which only approximately 30 per cent was reused. Coal energy represents 76.6 per cent of the total energy generated in China in 2007 and most of the coal-fired power plants are located in north-west of China, which is a water stressed area.The selection of mine waste water treatment process is challenging as the effluents typically contains high levels of organic compounds and salinity and their composition can vary significantly. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the integration of ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technologies for mine waste water treatment and reuse.In this paper, an overview of the design and performance of ultrafiltration and RO membranes applied for reuse of mine waste water are discussed. A study was carried out in two effluents treatment plants treating copper and coal mine waste water, which are located in Chile and China respectively. The following topics will be discussed to demonstrate the performance of an integrated membrane system in mine waste water reuse: The main challenges from copper mine waste water treatment: high level of chemical oxygen demand (COD); high level of total suspended solids (TSS); high salinity; high concentration of silica, sulfate, iron and other contaminants; and fluctuation of raw water quality. The main challenges from coal mine waste water treatment: high level of total dissolved solids, and waste water quality fluctuation. Design parameters for waste water treatment systems: Selection of pretreatment for dual-membrane system in the copper mine: Clarifier with coagulation and flocculation to remove high TSS; Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) to remove non-settling solids; Media filtration to handle fine solids and particulate organics; Activated Carbon filters (ACF) to remove dissolved organics, colour and odours. Selection of UF and RO membranes and specific design of their recovery, flux, chemical dosage and cleaning regimes. Finally, the performance of UF and RO, including the main fouling factors and efficient cleaning procedures, will be presented and compared to the design parameters to demonstrate the efficiency and performance of the selected integrated membrane systems in each case.

The Treasurer, the Hon Wayne Swan, has nominated ‘maximising our advantages’ from ‘Mining Boom Mark II’ as the focus of the 2011/2012 Australian Budget. Australia therefore requires a bolder and better integrated economic reform agenda if it is to convert current strong demand for mineral commodities into lasting prosperity that benefits all Australians. Lasting prosperity, well past 2012, will only be achieved if Australia can effectively reverse a decade-long deterioration in the minerals industry productivity performance due largely to capacity constraints that inhibit growth. This requires improving the efficiency of energy networks, transport infrastructure, water markets, health and education services, access to skilled people and by streamlining costly, inefficient project approvals’ processes. The common thread that holds this economic fabric together is the importance of having the right people using the most appropriate technology within the correct policy framework.In December 2010, employment in the minerals sector stood at 187 200; 21 per cent higher than one year earlier, 15 per cent higher than the industry employment peak prior to the global financial crisis in 2008 and 14 per cent greater than anticipated by industry modelling published in 2008. Managers and professionals make up approximately 15 per cent of the total workforce, yet minerals-related higher education programs (mining engineering, metallurgy and geoscience) continue to be chronically underfunded, requiring direct industry subsidies of more than $25 M over the last decade. Also, the publicly-funded Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector continues to fail the industry in the delivery of quality training programs. Importantly, the industry is a key driver of economic activity in regional and remote Australia and is the largest source of private sector employment for Indigenous Australians who comprise up to a quarter of employees in certain locations.This presentation looks at what our industry and country need to achieve to ensure we have the right people for the challenges ahead. **This is an abstract only. Over the past few years, there has been an emerging relationship between business and civil society, especially NGOs. This relationship has the potential to bring about significant change, identifying common ground between commercial and societal interests. The mining industry has been a leader in acknowledging the need for community consultation and engagement. This paper argues that partnerships can make a very significant contribution to the industry as it comes to terms with the dilemma of an open economic system pushing against a closed ecological system.The paper will pose a number of questions: where is the locus for debate about sustainability in the mining sector?; how well embedded within companies are the new competencies that Leon Davis first identified in 1995 for the mining sector?; how has education for mining engineers or exploration geologists changed to prepare people for what are very different expectations within the working environment?; how well is the industry doing in managing its own environmental impact and what is its responsibility to an agenda for sustainability which extends beyond its own operations?;and how can NGO partnerships contribute to more sustainable outcomes? The paper does not aim to answer these questions, but to explore them in the hope that the issues and possibilities raised will contribute to advancing progress towards sustainability within the industry.

For many years the scrubbing of roaster gas carrying sulphur dioxide has been carried out at the plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. at Risdon, Tasmania, using long horizontal tubes. in which the gas stream crossed a shower of water. In order to provide for increased roaster capacity, it was evident that additional gas scrubbing capacity would be required to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.This provided an opportunity to review the whole operation of gas scrubbing and an investigation was initiated to determine the characteristics of a counter-current type of scrubber. It was hoped that a change to this type of scrubbing would also reduce the sulphur dioxide concentration of the gas delivered to the atmosphere to a negligible amount. This, paper outlines results obtained from an experimental tower which was operated under a wide range of conditions, the packing height, gas flow, water flow, water temperature, and concentration of S02 in inlet gas being varied independently. A description is given of the leading features and operating characteristics of the plant units, which are designed on the basis of the experimental results. Operation of the new scrubbing system commenced on October 5th, 1948.THE PROBLEMThe gas which is handled carries S02 which may vary in concentration from 2% to 5%, and reaches the scrubbing system at a temperature of approximately 180 deg. C. An appreciable amount of suspended material accompanies the gas which has passed the cyclone system.

The kinetics of reduction of copper (cuprous) sulphide with CO-CO2-He gas mixtures, using an excess of CaO(s) as a sulphur-scavenging substance were investigated in the temperature range 855° - 950°C by a thermogravimetric method. Several gas compositions were employed at each temperature. Potential carbon deposition was overcome by preheating the reducing gas mixture. The phase-composition and the morphology of partially reactedsamples were analysed by a SEMlEDAX unit. The reduction rates showed strong dependence on the bulk gas compositions (CO, CO2) and, in most cases, the rate declined with rising temperature. The rate-controlling step appears to be the diffusion of CO2 gaseous species through the micropores of the CaS(s) - product layer which builds up around the CaOcore.

For tax purposes a mining company is a New Zealand company whose principal source of income is from the business of mining, or exploring for certain specified minerals in New Zealand. New Zealand tax law distinguishes between a non-resident mining operator and a mining company, with the only major difference in tax treatment being the corporate tax rates. New Zealand mining companies are taxed at 28 per cent, whereas non-resident mining operators are taxed at 33 per cent of taxable income. These provisions also apply to the petroleum mining industry. Individuals who carry on the business of mining are also specifically defined in the Act. They are termed as 'resident mining operators'. Non-resident mining operators are non-residents of New Zealand who carry on mining ventures as a business in New Zealand. Mining ventures are defined as the exploring, searching and mining of specified minerals, including development work carried out for profits. Similar provisions apply to the petroleum mining sector. Specified minerals are defined in the Income Tax Act 1976 ('the Act') and while no useful purpose is obtained by listing them in the paper, they include a larger number of industrial and commercial minerals. The Minister of Finance is also empowered to add to the list by publishing his determination in the Gazette.

As we look back through the Proceedings of our Institute, we find few papers dealing directly with education and recruitment. Apart from papers prepared in the earlier decades of this century, there was little written discussion on the subject until the 1950s, and mostly this was by the professionals, the professors and lecturers who staff the various mining schools of Australia and New Zealand.I use the term "mining school" in its fullest and widest meaning, to cover all aspects from ore to metal, and not in the narrow meaning that the word might imply. At the same time, in restricting the parameters of this address to "ore to metal" I recognize that I am excluding the very important fields of physical metallurgy and materials science; this I do because there is a limit to the quantum of any paper, and in fact these subjects are more closely allied to the use rather than the production of metals.However, the lack of education papers does not mean that education has been regarded lightly by The Institute. Sir Maurice Mawby in his presidential address in 1968, reminded us of the original objectives of The Institute, one 'of which was, "To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals ...". Our present Royal Charter is more specific when it says that one of the objects of The Institute is, ". . . to encourage the study of engineering with special reference to mining and metallurgy ...". If we recognize that in itself membership of our Institute is one means of continuing our education, it is true that education has been a concern of The Institute since it was first founded.Occasionally in recent years, an intrepid president has ventured to tell the academics what the industry needs, and he generally does this in a "no-question" situation! However it is encouraging that those entrusted with mineral education have always accepted this; they keep coming back for more and ask us to tell them what we want, and they will provide it.In 1948 a considerable dialogue on education was initiated when a standing committee was established by the Council of The Institute. The importance of the accurate determination and interpretation of the bulk density and porosity of a given iron ore deposit is very often disregarded or neglected. Large amounts of time and money are spent on delineating and testing orebodies, and yet one of the most important factors in resource evaluation is sometimes estimated or, at best, determined from existing data from similar deposits. The Thabazimbi and Sishen South iron ore deposits are two well-known economical occurrences of high-grade iron ore in South Africa. Both these deposits formed as secondary enrichment of banded iron formation lithologies. Ongoing density studies on both these deposits are underway and results thus far proved very effective and necessary. Small-scale methods are used to determine average values for different ore types on both deposits. These values are used in resource estimation and geophysical interpretation.

A process that allows selective flotation separation of low Cu/S ratio minerals (chalcopyrite and pyrite) from high Cu/S ratio minerals (bornite and chalcocite) from a mixed copper mineral concentrate under controlled oxidative-reductive potential conditions has been developed. The process has been extensively tested on samples with varying mineralogy using laboratory batch flotation tests and mini pilot plant trials.In this process, the mixed final copper mineral concentrate is purged with nitrogen, and then treated with sodium dithionite to achieve a slurry Eh in the -200 to -100 mV standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) range. Flotation was then carried out using nitrogen gas. As a result, a low Cu/S ratio concentrate (<1.3) and a high Cu/S ratio (>1.6) tailing stream were produced. QEMSCAN analysis of the flotation products showed that more than 85 per cent of the chalcopyrite and 95 per cent of the pyrite reported to the froth concentrate. Chalcocite and bornite were almost evenly distributed between the concentrate and tailing streams.Surface analysis studies, focused on the mechanism of separation, showed that at a negative redox potential xanthate and possibly dixanthogen are the dominant hydrophobic species on the surface of chalcopyrite and pyrite. As a result, the flotation of these minerals remained unaffected. In contrast, a much lower concentration of xanthate species on the surface of chalcocite and bornite particles was observed. Therefore, it is likely that at low Eh the copper xanthate complex desorbs from the chalcocite and bornite surfaces, causing a decrease in surface hydrophobicity and the diminished floatability of chalcocite and bornite.CITATION:Ametov, I, Harmer, S, Grano, S and Alford, R, 2014. The lignite resource in the southern part of the South Island is New ZealandÆs largest source of indigenous primary energy. The ten deposits evaluated by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB) have a total recoverable reserve of 6.2 billion tones equivalent to 74 000 PJ of energy or 20 times the original energy content of the Maui gas field. Updating the economics of the original LFTB studies indicates that lignite could be mined for between NZ$1.0 and 3.0/GJ. Its conversion to synthesis gas for production of petroleum products, chemical methanol, ammonia/urea fertiliser or electricity would be in the national benefit and likely to be commercially economic at todayÆs product prices.

In redesigning the cyanide plant at Mount Torrens, in conjunction with Mr. L. W. Grayson, the manager, several minor alterations were introduced in order to have the operations under thorough control, and these having proved serviceable may be of sufficient interest to merit a description here. The lixiviation vats, though only 8 feet in diameter, were retained, but the pipes leading away from the bottom were reduced from two inches to half-an-inch in diameter, and had a fall to the zinc boxes of about 4 feet. As these small pipes were completely filled by the solutions fiowing away from the vats, they exerted a suction equal to their fall and thus hastened the rate of flow, so that tailings containing a larger proportion of slimes could be treated than was possible where the larger pipes were used, as, there not being sufficient fiow of solution to keep the latter filled, no suction could be obtained with them. It was found that with'most of the tailings treated a sufficient flow could be obtained from the half-inch pipes when the taps on, them were only one-third to half open. The lower end of each of these pipes was connected by means on indiarubber tubing with the sille hole of 11 in aspirator bottle, and to the mouth of this bottle a few feet of similar tubing was connected, so that the solutions coming through could be directed into either of the fixed tubes leading respectively to the waste water tank the strong solution zinc boxes or the weak solution zinc boxes.In working the vats, the following method was found to give good results. While filling the vats with tailings the taps were left open, so that the water might drain off into the waste water tank the surface of the tailings was carefully levelled. When the strong solution was run in at the top, the air contained in the interstices of the tailings was forced through the half-inch pipe at the bottom as a strong blast, instead of, as I believe js usual, escaping by means of channels formed by it through the tailings, and thus tending, it would appeal, to render the disposition of the tailings less even and to make.

A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. The high production rates achieved from mass mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving and longwall mining require large conveyor belts, trucking loops (diesel/electrical) and rail systems for ore handling. However, the ore handling systems used in mass mines introduce a significant amount of heat into the overall ventilation system, which may be problematic at depth or in mines located in hot climates.In particular, the heat load from a conveyor system is not always well understood and consists of various components, including frictional heat from idlers, heat from electrical motors, heat from the drive train and heat from broken rock transported on the conveyor system. This paper presents results from a study that investigated the heat introduced to the ventilation air from a large conveyor system. The conveyor system transports ore with a maximum virgin rock temperature of 41°C from a depth of over 1 km. Mineral formations, accumulated during technogenic activities greatly influence an economic and ecological situation in the Kola North. On the one hand, the dumps from extraction of mineral resources, tailing ponds of beneficating plants, ash dumps, wastes of metallurgical and mechanical engineering productions destroy the regionÆs environment and require taking certain measures and costs to bury or protect from weathering, oxidation, etc. On the other hand, technogenic mineral formations contain a lot of valuable scarce components. The amount of solid wastes increases annually, causing damage to ecology and economy. Researches conducted in recent years showed a possibility and economic expediency of comprehensive processing of wastes from different enterprises in Murmansk region and their use for production of new competitive commodity output, possessing high consumer properties. Thus, involving mineral wastes from Khibiny apatite deposits into hydrometallurgical industrial processing provides the basis for setting up a large beneficating-metallurgical complex. In this case ores and wastes from other deposits on the Kola Peninsula, containing titanium, rare, rare-earth and other valuable elements, may be involved into processing. Establishing such a complex will allow to organise a deep processing of natural resources, utilise some production wastes, improve ecological security and supply production with competitive output. Expanding the complex implies not only involving new mineral raw material into processing, but mainly deepening raw material processing, maximum utilisation of local natural resources and obtaining a wider variety of prime products.

The development of a noise attenuated compressed air driven fan is described. The fan, which employs the jet reaction principle, possesses blade extension pieces which penetrate into an acoustically treated annular chamber. The dominant noise source, namely the air jets, is thereby partially suppressed. In addition, the increased moment arm of the jets leads to an improved propulsion effect which contributes to the improved aerodynamic performance of the unit.A typical measure of the improvement of this type of auxiliary mine ventilation unit is a 4 per cent increase in efficiency and a 10 dB (A) drop in sound level for a fan duty of 0·5 kPa and 1600 litre/s. This degree ofattenuation corresponds to at least halving the loudness level, a subjective noise measure.

Typically, large volumes of data are collected during geotechnical investigations for mining projects but rarely is this done in a comprehensive manner that enables all aspects of the geotechnical environment to be evaluated. A geotechnical core logging process has been developed to record mechanical and structural properties of the rock mass. The method enables data for a wide range of rock properties and geotechnically significant major structures to be collected including rock strength, joint surface condition, fracture frequency and fracture orientation. The logging method is unique in that sufficient data is collected to enable the independent determination of all the major rock mass classification systems including rock mass rating (RMR), (Bieniawski 1976, 1989; Laubscher, 1990) Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) tunnelling quality index (Q) (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) and geological strength index (GSI) (Hoek, Kaiser and Bawden, 1995). The logging system has been specifically developed to allow better and more precise appreciation of rock mass and structural conditions across the project area thereby optimising the use and application of the available geotechnical data and improving confidence in the outcomes of geotechnical investigations. This paper describes the core logging process with case examples showing how the logged data can be used for underground and open pit mine design.
