This paper illustrates the use of variography and moving average plots as an aid to analysing variations in the process that can be used to direct the improvement efforts. The hydrometallurgical processes used in manganese metal production consist of sequential unit operations that include milling and reduction of manganese ores. Leaching of the reduced ore, is followed by solid-liquid separation, residue disposal, solution purification and electrowinning of manganese metal completes the process. The nearly 250 integrated process control loops rely on reports of pH, flow pressure, level, temperature and chemical analyses. Metallurgical accounting, reconciliation and process control is achieved through monitoring of the chemical and mass balances within the manganese reduction plant, requiring approximately 50 000 analyses of solids, powders and liquids each month. The largest numbers of samples are taken in the cell house. Changes and variations monitored by sample statistics ensure that the manganese products comply with predetermined specification limits. Optimising the information-value of the approximately 50 000 samples in the manganese plant is carried out in tandem with ongoing process optimisation. Variographic analysis of daily sampling data suggests that the cyclical behaviour evident in the moving average plots is only a reflection of random residual variability and not a reflection of true underlying variability related to cyclical phenomena. Low resolution in the variogram of daily sampling data masks the short-range variability that emerges when hourly data are analysed. Hourly samples collected over a 39-day period (giving 941 sample data), helped identify short-range cycles in the process. The relative distribution of variability for daily sample intervals, indicate that 57 per cent arises from V[0], 18 per cent from V[process] and 16 per cent from random residual variation. V[0] includes all the uncontrolled sampling error arising from a poor sampling protocol, the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. This confirms the suspicions regarding the suboptimality of the sampling protocol and the way it is implemented. The absence of long-term trends in the leach suggests that short-term variation (less than one day) dominates the process. While the control charts indicate that the overall processes are maintained above the lower specification limits and the target values, there is nevertheless a considerable amount of variability in the system that overhangs the processes and threatens to impact them negatively. Although the variability in the leach is above the prescribed limits, the volatility is a matter of concern because it seems to be uncontrolled. The comparison of the various sources of variability in data collected on an hourly basis suggests that the short-term random variability (V[0]) accounts for almost 50 per cent of the variability in the process. The main source of this variability is due to errors in the sampling protocol and is probably related to the size of the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. Remediation of FE and GSE will probably lead to a reduction in V[0], whereas V[process] could be mitigated by reducing the biases associated with DE and EE in particular.

With the depleting iron reserves and difficult market conditions, precision in separation efficiency is of utmost importance. Classical local control options are predominant in the industry, but their inability to adjust to resolve application problems of interest has furthered the need of developing and implementing continuous control methodologies.This paper highlights the recent development in control of Outotec SLon® vertically pulsating high gradient magnetic separator (VPHGMS) including programmable logic controllers (PLC) coupled with distributed control system (DCS), on-site human–machine interface (HMI) control panel, advanced process control, continuous online sampling using Courier® 8 and additional modernisation packages including level control and cooling monitoring. Operational effectiveness is fundamental to any operation, becoming highly topical in those experiencing less than optimal output from their fleets. It is all encompassing aiming to identify those factors that could be improved within production and suggesting solutions in order to optimise the existing fleet and obtain the greatest capital return on expenditure.Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) is a large open cut diamond mine located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 180 km south of Kununurra. It is owned and operated by Rio Tinto on a two week on/two week off roster fly-in/fly-out from Perth or drive in/drive out from Kununurra. Through benchmarking the operation between January and June 2002, a study was undertaken allowing identification of areas falling below target. Following this, analysis of annualised hours and production downtimes were undertaken to quantify the potential gains of improvements in these areas. Strategies were then identified as stated in the 2002 mine plan, in operational effectiveness meetings, and by staff members. This project aimed to maximise direct working hours through determination of the main issues hindering performance. External and internal factors were considered and a continuous improvement program (CIP) was developed. The CIP aimed at internal site-based improvement teams to identify and implement solutions for improvement on a day-to-day basis.

The Kanowna Belle gold mine is located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, approximately 18 km north-east of Kalgoorlie. The processing plant is designed to process 2 Mt/y and has the capability to treat both refractory and free milling ore from the Kanowna Belle and Kundana mining operations.The Kanowna Belle ore is refractory with the gold mineralisation occurring mostly as fine-grained inclusions in pyrite or as very fine-grained gold located in pyritic arsenic rich growth zones. The Kanowna Belle refractory process includes flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrate, and calcine leaching to extract the gold from the ore.Mineralogical analysis of feed and tailings streams from the flotation circuit have shown that the gold bearing minerals are well liberated and confirmed they are mainly associated with pyrite. Nearly 40% of the flotation circuit losses are in the -38 µm size fraction. To improve the flotation circuit recovery, the fine particle gold recovery was targeted. A Cavitation Tube column was selected for the site-based pilot test work program. Concentrations of bright green material in the "Golden Mile" of Kalgoorlie, which carry particularly high gold values, are known locally as "green leader".This assemblage consists largely of quartz, sericitic muscovite, carbonates, and pyrite. Some of the sericitic muscovite contains vanadium, giving the rock its green colour. Vanadium oxides, including nolanite, are also present. Tellurides identified in this study are calaverite, altaite, petzite, melonite, and coloradoite. Native gold was found in most of the samples; some of the gold, at least, has been formed from the decomposition of gold tellurides.It is suggested that mineralizing solutions carrying gold and tellurium leached vanadium from the host rocks and subsequently deposited gold tellurides and vanadium-bearing minerals in the "green leader".

Mineral resources all over the world are often heterogeneous and have variable ore properties and ore grade. As a result the ore processed in concentrating plants varies over the life of mines. Consequently the circuits often suffer from bottlenecks typically at the stages of crushing, semi-autogeneous (SAG) and ball milling. Bottlenecks may be remedied with equipment retrofits, however, design engineers should consider a phased approach to the circuit design that delays initial capital expenditure over the life-of-mine. This paper deals with the debottlenecking of existing mineral processing plants by means of high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) applications. It also deals with the use of innovative flow sheet designs using HPGRs for the design of Greenfield plants by engineering or mining companies. In the case of Greenfield plant design an analysis with respect to energy efficiency and operating cost (OPEX) is presented. The analysis compares the performance of SAG based circuits against HPGR circuits that may be influenced by variable ore properties. Globally about 600 HPGRs are installed in various applications in the cement and minerals industries. In excess of 100 of these HPGRs are used since the mid 1980s for crushing and grinding of various ore types including æhard rockÆ applications. HPGR technology is mature enough to be considered as an ideal debottlenecking device. HPGRÆs are versatile, they have a low installation footprint and they are flexible in its machine settings (pressure, roll speed), which can be adjusted to react to ore variations whilst maintaining a high throughput. Examples for the benefits of using HPGR in terms of energy efficiency and operating costs are presented by this paper. æEco-efficientÆ flow sheets and sustainable development initiatives are linked to energy savings as an æenergy costÆ and benefit to the environment. Energy savingsÆ can also be analysed in terms of the ædollar costÆ (OPEX) savings. This paper demonstrates that HPGR is more energy efficient and may reduce the overall grinding energy requirements in the order of 16 per cent depending on the target grind size and ore properties. The HPGR is more cost efficient and may reduce overall grinding costs by as much as 19.3 per cent depending on the cost of energy, grinding media and the rate of grinding media wear in the comminution circuit.

Following the recent tailings tragedy in Brumadinho, the Investor Mining and Tailings Safety Initiative was formed representing institutional investors in the mining industry. This Initiative, led by The Church of England (CoE), requested data from 726 mining companies on each of their Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). What this exercise confirmed was that there was no public database of TSFs, and that there was a clear gap in tailings management systems within the disclosing companies. We present an approach using technology to support best practice TSF management, governance and disclosure which was originally submitted as part of University of Cambridge Post-graduate studies in Sustainability Leadership in January 2020. The aim of the paper is to discuss how technology could be used to deliver a Tailings Management Solution (TMS) that is aligned with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), and supports rigorous governance leading to disclosure. Subsequently the goals of the plan are aligned with that of the co-conveners of the GISTM (the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)) which is to facilitate operators’ trajectory towards zero harm to people and the environment. Most of the focus to date around tailings management post Brumadinho has been on monitoring technologies, of which there are many. It is obviously important to acknowledge the critical role of monitoring technologies; however, our approach is agnostic to monitoring technologies and assumes that all of them are relevant. Our focus is on the data management, reporting and governance leading to disclosure of the information. Critical components of developing the TMS include adapting existing software products and solutions, recognising a system thinking approach is needed, strategic partnerships to deliver an accessible solution faster and more cost effectively, and, new ways of collaborating. The TMS should also accommodate relevant regional geotechnical codes and standards. The industry need for a TMS is well established and urgent, with significant pressure from regulators and civil society for the industry to address this significant issue.

THE present article makes no claim to be exhaustive, since it cannot contain all the knowledge which scientists and manufacturers of the compounds of the rare earths have gained. The following notes are, therefore, simply an attempt to ascertain andclearly record the occurrence, properties, and uses of the more important of the rare earths, with a special reference to their commercial values and the industries based upon them.HISTORYIt was the mine manager, Gcyer, of Stockholm, who, in 1788, first drew attention to a black mineral which had been found in a quarry near Roslagen, in Sweden. In 1805 Klapproth received some specimens of this mineral, which he declared to be a newmineral. Subsequently Gadolin, professor of chemistry at Abo, analyzed the same mineral, and determined the presence of an unknown earth resembling alumina and lime. He named the mineral ytterbite, and afterwards gadolinite. Klapproth has alsothe merit of having detected (1804) another rare earth, which he named ochroit-earth, found in the Bastnas mine, near Riddarhyttan, in Wcstmannland, Sweden. The Morning Star Gold Mine presents an example of a prolific operation with considerable historical records, mine workings, drill hole logs and countless plans from greater than 20 adjacent mines which have now been consolidated to form the current project. Implementation of 3D computer modelling in the planning stages has provided an additional tool to integrate and refine geological models as a guide to some exploration strategies. It has allowed for a re- interpretation of the host rock units, dimensional constraints, new exploration extensions and provisional resource modelling. The initial consideration of this project was to integrate 135 years of mining history into a single database. Each historic mining area had an unrelated mine grid, often established parallel to the long axis of their main stopes; some were based on magnetic or true north. Survey plans were in chain, imperial or metric units. Through the manipulation and rotation of old grids, previously unrelated mine workings began to form continuous mineralised zones, with unmined portions still remaining in between the existing development. Furthermore the current drillhole database of >433 holes showed numerous confirmatory intersections of new mineralisation. A series of tiered tables were created within a relational database to derive guidelines for assessing data to attribute a Mineral Prospectivity Value [MPV] based on key indicators of mineralisation. Indicator logging now forms the basis of geological descriptions.

Glass-reinforced polymer bolts, commonly known as fibreglass dowels and fibre-reinforced polymer or plastic bolts or plastic dowels are increasingly applied for strata reinforcement in mines as well as in concrete reinforcement in civil engineering. The most popular dowels used in coalmines are the 22?mm diameter fully threaded type. Fibreglass and plastic bolts are cuttable, easy to handle, lightweight and corrosive resistant. A series of tests were undertaken to evaluate various strength properties of fibreglass dowels. These included tensile failure tests by the double-embedment method, a single guillotine shear test and a double shear test, carried out on dowels installed in concrete blocks, and with punch shear tests. Punch shear tests were used to evaluate the dowel shear strength parallel and perpendicular to the fibreglass strands or elements direction of extrusion. The study found that the tensile strength of the 22?mm diameter fibreglass dowels was in the order of 30?t. In the shear testing, the peak shear load was influenced by the encapsulation grout type and the level of fibreglass axial pretension. Fully resin encapsulated threaded bar and cement grouted cable bolts are common forms of reinforcement for underground mining excavations constructed at great depth. These elements are frequently installed to dissipate the dynamic loads caused by violent rock mass failure mechanisms. Failure of the ground support scheme without rupture of the reinforcement elements implies that the maximum energy dissipation capacity of the scheme was not utilised. The ground support damage mechanisms are useful to identify in this context as they reveal vulnerabilities which limit the scheme performance. This paper presents a number of field observations of reinforcement performance following a range of dynamic loading conditions. It was observed that fully resin encapsulated threaded bars exhibit variable behaviour. In particular, inconsistent resin encapsulation was frequently observed in combination with surface support failure, indicating that the retention function of these elements may allow preferential loading of the surface support system. Observations of cement grouted, twin-strand plain cable bolts reveal a common mode of damage involving differential displacement across the steel-grout interface and slip of the cable within the borehole. This is common where strands are not mutually tensioned with barrel and wedge assemblies. Surface fixtures that exceed the strength capacity of the cable strand are required in order to minimise the occurrence of this response. Improved load transfer from the rock mass and surface support to the cable can thus be achieved, particularly where small block size failure occurs.CITATION:Drover, C and Villaescusa, E, 2016. The Precambrian Eastern Creek Volcanics comprises spilitic basalts with interbedded sediments and tuffs which were extruded and deposited during Middle Proterozoic time. The rocks have undergone low-grade regional metamorphism.The Eastern Creek Volcanics are approximately 17,000 ft thick and have been divided into four units.The rocks were laid down in a geosynclinal basin elongate to the north. The main structural features are the northerly trending Mount Isa and Gorge Creek-Quilalar fault systems.Major east-west faults cause repetition of the sequence.Copper and uranium mineralization is known within the formation. Copper mineralization is confined to quartz-filled shears anp basalts. Nothing of economic importance has been found in the area though ore deposits have been found elsewhere in this type of environment.

Deposits of low-grade iron ores containing abundant goethite are distributed across the world. A common difficulty associated with beneficiating goethitic-rich ores is the poor liberation characteristics of the iron-bearing minerals which often contain finely disseminated gangue minerals such as kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz. Microwave-assisted heating has been proposed as an effective way of inducing dehydroxylation and associated mineral transformations in order to beneficiate low-grade goethitic ores. In this research, the mineral transformations occurring in a low-grade goethite-rich sample using microwave radiation was studied. Roasting conditions (up to 1000°C and under various CO/CO2 gas atmospheres) were designed to generate a magnetic product from a goethite-rich, reject waste stream sample sourced from an iron ore processing site in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Conditions (T, pO2) for transforming the raw material from hydrated goethite to hematite and eventually to magnetite are presented. Chemical and mineralogical characterisation of the raw material and roast products were conducted using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques to identify the mineralogical and chemical changes occurring during the heat treatment. Further steps are suggested to optimise the microwave-assisted magnetising roasting and correlate it with the application of magnetic separation techniques to maximise the efficiency of upgrading the iron content in low-grade iron ores.CITATION:Nunna, V, Hapugoda, S and Pownceby, M I, 2017. "The use of conditional simulation to characterise mine plan uncertainty is increasing for the assessment of risk in mining projects. While the development of grade uncertainty profiles is relatively straightforward and can be validated using standard geostatistical techniques, the addition of geological uncertainty to evaluate total risk remains problematic. Some of the problems associated with geological uncertainty methods include the clustering of data in favourable geologic units, difficulty in training image definition and the inability to address change of support issues for categorical variables. Despite these obstacles, the importance of geological uncertainty as a contributor to total uncertainty has prompted Newmont to explore and evaluate the use of various techniques (and combinations of techniques) on different deposit types.Two orogenic deposits of different geological complexity were selected for the study: Subika, a shear zone-hosted deposit, and Merian, a deposit containing gold mineralisation associated with quartz vein zones and stockwork within which are found higher-grade quartz breccia zones. Newmont trialled various categorical simulation approaches to determine the applicability of these methods for each deposit type and the effect of parameter choice on the width of the uncertainty interval. Some of the techniques that were trialled include multiple point statistics methods, sequential indicator simulation using local probabilities as well as variations of these methodologies.The goals of this study included: gaining an understanding of which techniques may work best in which deposit types gaining an understanding of the intricacies of each method gaining an understanding of the effect that each method has on total uncertainty analysis.This paper presents a comparison of the various techniques and makes recommendations for their use in uncertainty analysis.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Perry, R, Allen, L and Inglis, R, 2014. The theme of this paper is the development of-the project feasibility study which includes discussion of the work which is carried out in preparing the project feasibility study, the necessary evaluations and structures that are employed to ensure that not only does the feasibility study itself stand up to scrutiny and is sound, but also that the investment the company is proposing to develop, "the project", is an investment decision which will represent good returns to the company. This theme is particularly relevant when there are competing divisions within the company and only limited cash resources are available to make the correct investment decision. Thus various potential investments may be evaluated against each other to determine which project will be given the go ahead for development. This paper will particularly focus on the various investment analysis techniques that are used and discuss the work that is required in preparing the project feasibility study and specifically the interaction of the project team members and the thought process that must be undertaken to complete the project feasibility study. Finally comments will be made on tax planning issues particularly with respect to taxation of gold production to be introduced in January 1991. Some ideas are presented which may help and possibly improve the financial position of the projects being reviewed. Further, it is suggested that the thought process which goes with the financial engineering aspects of a resource project can be widened to take account of taxation issues and tax planning to ensure the rise of the project feasibility and hence the decision to proceed to development by the project sponsors.

As the iron ore/magnetite boom gains momentum, it is particularly important to question established past trends and explore the potential of alternative design options. Traditionally, ‘rule of thumb’ methods have been used to size dewatering equipment. Greater consideration needs to be given to technological advancements and specific throughput testing of each ore body type based on innovative developments.This paper will describe how an innovative approach resulted not only in significant savings in capital cost and site work hours but also delivered a truly optimised design for the thickener duty at Karara. Test work also played a crucial role and a comprehensive test work program on the ore samples showed the scale-up benefi ts of new technology in thickener designs. Working closely with the Karara team during the laboratory testing proved the old sizing theories for iron ore/magnetite processing have been superseded with the knowledge and results of the industry’s newest feedwell technology. Increased solids flux and rise rates in the testing process proved very successful, resulting in signifi cantly reduced thickener sizes and lower capital expense.Mechanical design considerations such as removal of underflow and pump access led to a preference for an above-ground thickener confi guration, and the economics of a completefabrication and installation package favoured steel construction for the thickener units.The ultimate choice of the bolted/fl anged tank methodology provides both economic and timely solutions for the site installation including reduced man power and quick and safe site-work. A benefits comparison between this design and other fabrication and installation procedures will also be analysed in the paper.

The use of comparative sampling methods during the evaluation of the tin-copper deposits at Cleveland mine yielded closely checking average results from groove, channel, AXT split diamond drill core, and bulk sampling for both tin and copper content of the ore.The weighted mean tin and copper grades and values for the groove, channel, and split core samples showed small percentage differences from bulk sample results, and the F-ratio test for single population origin of the four types of samples was accepted at the 99· 5 per cent level of confidence.These results indicate that grade estimates based on the assays from AXT split diamond drill core and/or groove samples would be reliable within practical limits.
