The ore is very 'refractory. It consists essentially of arsenical pyrites, iron pyrites, zinc blende, galena, antimony as sulphide and probably, in combination with galena, as Jamesonite, magnesium, and aluminium silicates with quartz. Some of the oxidized ore, of which there is very little, has a very interesting composition. A specimen shown to me by the ,general.manager, Mr. F. B. Stephens, consisted of hydrated arseniate of iron, orpiment, pyromorphite, lead oxide, with magnesium silicates and quartz. The ore found in the mine with a composition similar to this specimen was valued for gold contents at 60 oz. per ton. This ore is found as a small leader, which runs parallel to the main ore body, at intervals cutting through it.The ore is conveyed from the mine to the reduction works by means of a double road tram line. The mine is situated about rooo feet above the plant on a hill. The grade is so great (about I in 2) that the loaded trucks coming down are able to pullthe empty ones up, thus obviating the necessity of motive power for haulage. All that is necessary is two large grooved pulleys, fixed at the summit of the hilI, and provided with a rope-break for steadying the speed of the trucks down the hilI.

Numerous supergene manganese oxide deposits are developed inSouth China as a result of weathering of a thick sequence of Paleozoic marine Mn-bearing sedimentary rocks, consisting mainly of limestones, cherts and black shales that were intensely folded and faulted due to multiple episodes of tectonism since the late Triassic. The ore minerals are dominantly pyrolusite, cryptomelane, nsutite, lithiophorite and braunite. The supergene manganese ores contain Mn ranging from 20 to 44 wt per cent; manganese oxide deposits derived from cherts and black shales also contain recoverable levels of Co, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn. 40Ar/39Ar dating of potassium-bearing manganese oxides reveals that extensive supergene manganese ore formation started at least in the earliest Miocene and persisted to the Present. Ages of the deposits show a close correlation to tectonic stability, with the oldest in tectonically quiescent areas and the youngest in active areas that have subjected to continuous uplift and thus significant denudation. The prolonged wet and hot climate since Oligocene and the balance between weathering and erosion, which is parameter to the tectonic stability, are the ultimate controls on the formation and distribution of South China supergene manganese oxide deposits. The loss of 11 miners in the 7 August 1994 Moura No.2 Underground Mine Disaster was the catalyst for major change in the way safety was managed in the Australian Mining Industry. The impact was felt across all sectors not just underground coal. It was the catalyst for the overhaul of the regulatory frameworks, moving away from prescription to management systems and risk management. This had a substantial impact on the way not only the industry operated but also on how the regulator functioned. It heralded the introduction of competency-based training across all levels of the mining workforce. Since that time major improvements in safety performance have occurred. However, hiding within the statistics are some disturbing trends. This paper aims to analyse the progress made in the past 30 years and identify the current and emerging issues. Automation is bringing major production and safety benefits, but at the same time other factors such as the reduction in workforce numbers and ever-increasing production pressures are leading to high turnover rates. This in turn causes to a loss of experience and expertise. In addition, and of particular importance, is the recognition of psychosocial wellness on workforce safety. Many of these factors are not unique to the mining industry however they may be exacerbated by the scale of mining, the remoteness of the mines and family unfriendly mining rosters.

Triboelectric Charge and Separation Characteristics of Industrial Minerals The basic principles of triboelectric charge and separation of minerals and the factors affecting the entity of the charges developed on mineral surfaces are discussed and the surface pretreatment methods by which the electrophysical properties and thereby triboelectric charging and separation of minerals can be artificially altered/modified are reviewed. Furthermore, the triboelectricfication theory of materials is envisaged from the chemical concept of acid-base donor-acceptor and an attempt is made to correlate the physical concept of triboelectrification with the donor-acceptor properties. The triboelectric charge characteristics of the quartz, calcite and wollastonite mineral samples for different size classes were defined using different tribocharging medium. Based on the triboelectric charges acquired by mineral samples their energetic work function values are estimated. In addition, the main electrophysical properties, ie dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of different size fractions of the mineral samples are measured and their donor-acceptor chemical properties were defined. A series of triboelectric separation tests were conducted to explore the possibilities for separation these mineral from each others. The results from the triboelectric charge and separation of the single mineral systems showed promising prospect in separating quartz, calcite, and wollastonite from each others. Finally, attempts were made to explore the possibilities to implement triboelectric charge and separation process to real ores. Promising results achieved when separation of calcite from silicate impurity was sought from a carbonate ore. A very high purity (99 per cent) calcite product was obtained at a recovery of 80 per cent. Interesting results were also achieved to concentrate wollastonite from a complex silicate ore containing quartz, different feldspars, wollastonite and other Mg-Fe silicates. In this case conditioning of the ore with salicylic acid at defined temperature and relative humidity was found to be essential to concentrate wollastonite. The outcomes indicate despite the fact that triboelectric charge and separation process has not been completely perceived, it pronounced to be an environmentally friendly and economically viable technique for minerals and wastes beneficiation. Being a dry beneficiation technique the process has special appeal, which must be explored further in particular for treating industrial minerals.

The effectiveness of shear-flocculation as a method for upgrading simple mixtures of ultrafine (1-11 \lm) scheelite and garnet was evaluated. Statistical methods were used in the design and analysis of the main test program.The stirrer speed, stirring time, and initial weight ratio were all found to have significant effects on both the recovery and grade of the floes produced. The particle sizes also had an effect on the final grade. There were several important interactions between factors which also affected the results. Optimum conditions for shear-flocculation were established, and under these conditions about 80 per cent of the scheelite could be recovered at a grade which depended on the composition of the starting mixture. Starting with mixtures containing 10 and 50 per cent scheelite, the best final grades were between 20 and 50 per cent and between 70 and 90 per cent respectively, the actual value depending on the particular combination of particle sizes.

An infra-red absorption study has been made of crocidolite, country rock. and associated host rocks from Wittenoom Gorge. The spectrum of the country rock is appreciably different from those of crocidolite and the magnetite-rich host rocks which are closely similar. A process to separate crocidolite-bearing ore from country rock based on infra-red emission is therefore possible in theory.

A mineral exploration manager's prime function is to provide a frame- work within which new mine production can be achieved. As part of this framework, the manager should know his employerb future requirements, and should direct exploration towards those particular mineral commodities which indicate satisfactory growth in consumption and price. Selection of these commodities can be assisted by studies of world reserves, and long term trends in price and consumption. Exploration planning is most efficient with an assured and reasonably uniform supply of funds.

While there is no specific obligation on the part of any applicant to consult directly with tangata whenua (people of the land), recent cases highlight the need to engage in active consultation in order to avoid serious objections and delay, particularly where a proposal may affect the matters referred to in section 6(e) (Waahi tapu/sacred places) and 7(a) (KaitiakitangaiGuardianship) of the RMA.   The Environment Court has shown some sympathy for tangata whenua where waahi tapu and other significant matters of cultural concern are at risk because of a proposed development. There are several practical steps that can be taken to minimise the potential for serious objection including: ò knowing who to contact and how to contact them; ò demonstrating empathy for the concerns of tangata whenua; ò engaging in proactive consultation, for example meeting at a time and a place that is suitable to tangata whenua, and a preparedness to meet the costs of tangata whenua etc; ò demonstrate an awareness of tangata whenua issues; being aware of the types of mechanisms that are available to remedy, avoid etc adverse effects on matters of concern to tangata whenua.

A series of tests was carried out on one of the rock-pebble milling circuits treating complex nickel ores at Kambalda Nickel Operations of Western Mining Corporation. A mathematical model to describe the behaviour of a 508 mm hydrocyclone was developed from the data.A "flat" reduced efficiency curve was observed for the system. This was attributed to a marked difference in the specific gravity of different size fractions of the feed. A modified approach in describing the shape or the reduced efficiency curve resulted in accurate prediction of the hydrocyclone performance.

The advantages and limitations of the borehole method are outlined, and general principles of plant design are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, attempts have been made to reduce mine development costs by various methods. Some of the, techniques of tunnelling have been adopted in horizontal headings, and in main vertical shafts, mechanical plant has displaced hand labour with notable success. A challenge on many industrial flotation circuits is controlling concentrate mineral grades using measurements that are provided infrequently. The mineral grades in concentrate streams are a critical performance indicator in any industrial flotation circuit. Failure to achieve concentrate mineral grade targets has significant financial consequences on a flotation operation. A violation of gangue mineral grade limits by the concentrator may also result in significant penalties.Online grade analysers which can provide reliable real time grade measurements are essential for effective grade optimisation. The Blue Cube MQi analyser (by Blue Cube Systems) has recently come to prominence for its ability to rapidly determine mineral concentrate grades online and has the benefit of operating in-stream. This has provided excellent insight into the actual process dynamics in the flotation circuit, and hence enabled real-time control and optimisation of concentrate mineral grades.MintekÆs Measurement and Control division, specialising in advanced control solutions for mineral and metallurgical industries, has had the opportunity to link the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser to the measurements provided by the Blue Cube system at the BCL nickel concentrator plant in Botswana. The project focused on stabilising the final concentrate grade while ensuring the final tailings are minimised, resulting in an improved nickel recovery. This site already had the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser for several years, but the original grade measurement device was unreliable and ultimately failed. The system was reactivated once the Blue Cube system was installed, replacing the old analyser. Uplift of the antiformal ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand , has resulted in the progressive evolution of eluvial placer deposits in tectonic sediments on the range flanks and along their margins. The placers are derived from the reworking of fine-grained gold from the auriferous Manuherikia Group fluvial sediments which covered the basement prior to uplift of the ranges. Gold in the tectonic sediments at Matakanui shows a progressive increase in grainsize in successively younger sediments and nuggets in the youngest gravel sequence are up to two orders of magnitude larger than gold grains in the parent alluvial source. Most of the gold in the tectonic sediments is highly irregular in shape, commonly with delicate surface textures which could not have survived fluvial transport and are indicative of authigenic precipitation. Some coarse grains have been rounded by recycling, and further addition of authigenic gold has occurred. Placer gold values result from both physical and chemical enrichment during sedimentary recycling. Continued range uplift and back-thrusting of sediments on to the ranges results in recycling of earlier formed placer sediments. They also result in further enrichment of gold values through the incorporation of additional supplies of the parent alluvial source sediment The host sediments are widespread along the ranges and are not confined to sites of historic mining activity.

Brunswick Mine, one of the largest underground zinc mines in the world, is scheduled to close in 2010 after almost half a century of production. All mines eventually close; some suddenly as a result of unsustainable economic or technical conditions and others, as in our case, as a result of the depletion of the orebody. When the mine is the most significant employer and an economic driver in the region, it is key that the closure is handled in a planned, communicated, well-executed fashion. The following paper documents strategies, plans and activities that are currently taking place in order to ensure a seamless closure that satisfies all stakeholders including employees, management, regulatory bodies and the public. It is an important deliverable for the company that the good will, credibility and reputation that has been built up over the years is sustained throughout the closure process and beyond. A life of mine labour agreement with the unionised workforce, staff retention and recruiting programs, regulatory closure plans, communications and transition adjustment activities will be discussed. The use of a stage-gate style project management tool analysing the risks and key deliverables will be highlighted. It is hoped that the concepts and approaches discussed here may be of value to other operations that will be faced with closure, and its inherent challenges, in the not too distant future.

New ZealandÆs largest gold producersÆ OceanaGold Macraes Mine is characterised by a large tonnage and relatively low grade operation. To survive in diminishing real gold prices, the operation must focus on a culture of continuous improvement. This paper presents the outcome of a supplier sponsored continuous improvement project known as the Orica Advanced Mining Services project.   In March 2004 OceanaGold (then GRD Macraes) entered into an Advanced Mining Services (AMS) project with Orica Mining Services. The motivating factor behind OceanaGoldÆs need to improve bulk waste productivity and SAG mill throughput was the planned increase in production from five million to 5.4 million tonnes per annum. A stripping ratio of ten to one meant that optimisation of the drill, blast and production functions was paramount.   The primary focus of the project was to optimise the drill and blast parameters to suit the variable rock conditions throughout the mines main operating pit (Frasers Pit). Fragmentation of the ore for presentation at the SAG mill, and cost reduction on the mining of bulk waste movement, were the primary objectives. A number of additional initiatives complimenting the interface between drill, blast and ore production were also established. These included; +        reduced ore loss through delineation of ore boundaries to allow for blast movement; +        established blasting parameters for variable geological conditions, resulting in improved fragmentation; and +        improved asset utilisation by establishing a blasting regime that angled grade control holes to be used as blastholes in the stockworks area.   A year into the project, the philosophy of continuous improvement is now in-grained at the Macraes minesite. As the project continues, the focus is on the further refining of those procedures established, to ensure a continued focus on lower unit mining production costs.

Direct relationships between rock texture and BWi (grindability index) have been established based on geological and metallurgical information supported by optical microscopy observations, gathered from 731 samples.Each recognised rock texture is observed to be related to a certain BWi range and, this texture is also characteristic of distinct lithological subunits (recognisable at mapping scale). Therefore, this relationship may provide an important tool for early milling in situ estimation.Since each textural type is a response to rock formation conditions, the causality of the relationship between BWi and texture is based on such conditions and, particularly, on the interfacial free energy among its components.According to the abovementioned textural features, the greater the free interfacial energy between mineral components, the greater the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries and, consequently, the greater the necessary energy required for milling.If the textural evidence indicates that the rock was able to adjust the shape and/or size of its components – in a natural tendency of all systems to minimise energy– then the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries will be lower.

This paper aims to address the issue of the public's image of the extractive minerals industry. What is it about the industry that incites such negative feelings and are they justified? Are we really the 'rapists of the land' that many would have us believe? Has the industry really not improved since the old gold boom days?   I believe that the fundamental cause for the public's view is lack of knowledge and understanding of the industry as a result of the dislocation of the end production from its source. There are few people who look at a house, car, record, toilet, tooth-brush, bottle of coke or pair of glasses and see the mine site that supplied the source material. But the mine site and its products should be inseparably linked. This is one area where we should be educating the public û it is all very well being anti-development but the population as a whole is not really prepared to live without its 'mineral'-derived necessities. It is very easy to say that we do not want minerals development in New Zealand but are we prepared to live with the consequences, ie go without its products? We have a duty as a global citizen to develop our own resources rather than expect Third World nations desperate for overseas investment, often with governments who are not prepared to constrain or control their development, to be exploited. New Zealand is not the only 'beautiful' place in the world and we should be aware of the impact that our demands for resources have on the countries who supply us. We have a duty to be a good global citizen.   So how does the industry improve its public image? The key here has to be to educate. This does not have to be high powered or expensive but can be as simple as getting a few local kids' hands dirty panning, and gaining some firsthand knowledge of the industry. The industry also needs to be more pro-active in the public arena. Yes, the industry has skeletons, but the industry should be publicly displaying them û admit that things have gone wrong but let's do it ourselves and not leave it up to the environmental groups to accuse, point the finger and put the industry under public scrutiny. The industry should also be publicising its successes, inviting the local press, councils, etc to view the latest area rehabilitated. But more than anything else we must tell the public what the minerals industry means to New Zealand. Can they really live without us?

The need to hoist increasing loads from great depths is leading to the more general adoption of winders of the Koepe and Blair types. The trend has introduced a number of new problems in winding ropes, more particularly in the Koepe system where regular destructive tests during the life of a rope are not possible. Consequently, the importance of introducing non-destructive tests is much greater, especially so in the case of Koepe ropes used for deep winding where there are three major destructive fatiguing influences. These are rotational effects when a vertical rope is changed end-for- end each trip, the much greater range of stress to which the rope is subjected each trip as compared with drum winding, and the destructive effect of a high coefficient of friction between wheel and rope. A plea for a lower coefficient in the interest of better rope and tread life, substantiated by analysis, is made for Koepe winders operating at depth.Co-ordination of rope testing with general hoisting problems is stressed and the active participation of the Wire Rope Committee of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. in the promotion ofthe project is noted.The general introduction of a rope testing programme in Australia, personnel requirements and some local basic research in the subject to cope with future demands are considered.

The need to better understand and develop strategies to improve instantaneous shovel productivity at the Cadia Hill Open Pit Mine (CHM) instigated the development of the æShot to ShovelÆ project. This project has involved the implementation of a drill and blast (D&B) information management system to capture current and future experience. Equally important has been the manual monitoring of shovel productivity and direct use and analysis of high precision GPS and productivity data logged by ModularÆs Dispatch System. The analysis of this type of data was facilitated with the application of GIS based software (ie MapInfo). This has shown to be a powerful medium to display, interpret and assess this type of spatial information on a blast-by-blast basis. Cadia HillÆs well-defined D&B processes supplemented with the application of the above systems are providing a unique capability to assess and better understand the impact of both muckpile conditions and operator proficiency on instantaneous loading productivity. This is facilitating the definition of appropriate optimisation strategies in both drilling and blasting and operator proficiency training. This paper gives a summary of the work conducted in the æShot to ShovelÆ project, describes the engineering tools being implemented and discusses preliminary findings and their practical implications.

Six years ago it was my responsibility to give the presidential address, and now that privilege has come my way again. On that occasion we were gathered atWhyalla and I took the opportunity of putting before members some observations on the problems we then faced in Australia, and some gains we had been able to chalk up during those early postwar years. You may recall that we were then just beginning to emerge from the difficulties of postwar reconstructions - of fuel and power shortages, and a grossly inadequate manpower for the tasks facing us. The expansion of manufacturing industry in Australia greatly stimulated by wartime activities, and by the postwar developments of many institutions - ran ahead of the supporting services and of the supply of labour to do thejobs. For many industries this unfortunate state of affairs had meant operating at rates well below their installed capacities and therefore levels of output insufficient for Australia's rapidly growing needs. When I last spoke to you these problems were still with us, though their intensity was beginning to lessen as a result of vigorous efforts by industry and governments to reduce them. But I must confess that my thoughts on that occasion were full of those problems and of the effect they were having on the iron and steel industry of this country-of the coal shortage, the labour shortage, and the many other difficulties we were then faced with - and all at a time when the stepping up of our postwar expansion programme was of vital concern to all of us.What a different picture it is six years later! Blasting related indices were developed to quantify variation in rock strength and structure for each stope, and for each lift of each stope, as part of a Mine to Mill study at an underground open stope mine. The indices were derived from combinations of data from underground diamond drilling because the simplifying assumptions contained in the block model prevented sufficient differentiation in rock mass characteristics to enable adjustments to the blast design.Application of combinations of blasting related indices enabled the identification of stopes with a high potential for inconsistent and oversize fragmentation, underbreak and overbreak. The indices also fragmentation outcomes to deliver increased material flow within stopes, better digability and predict indicative mill throughput. The stopes with issuesCalibration of the results enabled adjustments to the blast design based on the rock mass conditions and accordingly improved the blast outcomes. This enabled improved productivity by reducing underbreak and overbreak, having a more appropriate fragmentation, which reduces unplanned rock handling and improves bogging. The reduction in recovery drilling creates huge opportunities to improve output by reducing production delays and decreasing the overall cost per tonne. By understanding the explosive performance and blast energy distribution in relation to rock mass blastability poor, performing designs in blind upholes and convex stopes were identified.The conclusion of the work is that value improvement, regarding increased revenue and reduced costs, can be achieved across the whole underground Mine to Mill process chain by developing stope based indices from the existing geological information to correctly tailor the blast design to the rock within, and surrounding, the stope.CITATION:Jackson, J and Sellers, E, 2017.
