Most of the world's economically significant volcanogenic massive sulphide (VSM) deposits are considered to have formed in submarine arc and backarc settings. While the Kermadec-Tonga arc is an excellent example of an intra-oceanic arc setting, it remains largely unexplored in terms of submarine mineral resources. More than half of this arc (~1400 km of the >2500-km-long feature) lies within the EEZ of New Zealand, where it is defined by at least one sub-aerial and 33 submarine volcanoes. The NZAPLUME (New Zealand American PLUme Mapping Expedition) cruise of March 1999 provided a systematic assessment ofhydrothermal activity on the southernmost 13 submarine volcanoes along the southern Kermadec arc. Using prospecting techniques based on the physical and chemical detection of hydrothermal plumes, we discovered that more than half (7 of 13) of the southern Kermadec volcanoes host one or more active hydrothermal systems at depths ranging between <200 to 1800 m. Chemical results show that the fluids discharged are compositionally diverse among volcanoes and between sites at a single volcano. Plumes over more than half of the volcanoes are gas-rich (He, CO2, H2S) relative to mid-ocean-ridge (MOR) plumes. In addition, most sites are highly enriched in Fe, yielding Fe/Mn values that far exceed those for MORs. One interpretation consistent with these observations is compositional overprinting by addition of magmatic fluids, which are typically highly enriched in gaseous and ionic components. Regardless of the source, it is clear that the ligands (HS-, Cl-) required to efficiently transport base (e.g. Cu, Zn, Pb) and precious (e.g. Au, Ag) metals to the seafloor are abundant in Kermadec arc fluids. We conclude that modem analogs of VMS deposits are likely forming at multiple sites along the Kermadec arc and within the EEZ of New Zealand.

As known to the international mining sectors, Hunan province, called as ' Nonferrous Native Area ', is the main base of nonferrous metals Pro- duction in China. There are over 194 nonferrous mines in this province, most of them distribute over the basin of Xiangjiang River. The state of management of wastewater in Hunan's nonferrous mines is outlined.The experiences and economic benefit in the management and treatment of wa- stewater in Bofang and Mayang copper mines, and at Shizhuyuan polymeta- llic mine, are mainly introduced. It concludes with measures and recommendations for future management and treatment of wastewater in Hunan's nonferrous mines.

The management and operation of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are often neglected until the process plant has to shut down as a result of this negligence or as a result of a catastrophic failure as was the case during the recent TSF failure in North America.TSFs are often regarded as non-assets and do not receive the attention they deserve in terms of technical expertise and financial provision. A TSF is not a simple structure but a complex and dynamic structure that changes throughout its operational life. The operational life of a TSF is the period in which there is the greatest opportunity for risks to occur. The failure of a TSF is normally not as a result of a single event but as a result of a consequence of events. These events are often not recognised in time due to a number of factors.Process plants and slurry pumping systems are operated at suboptimal conditions in order to maintain throughput. At the same time, the tailings properties are compromised in terms of slurry density and particle size distribution amongst other things. Tailings deposition cycles and drying cycles are not well understood and the tailings management strategy is not well tuned in terms of maximising consolidation and improving in situ densities. Pond control is also neglected. These are aspects that form the keystone to the effective utilisation of available deposition area as well as the frequency and cost of future embankment raises.Apart from operational issues, forward planning in terms of budget requirements, increases in tailings throughput, embankment raises, pipe replacements, etc are normally put on the back burner. Available deposition space at the time seems to render this planning obsolete.The bottom line is that responsible tailings management and proper forward planning can limit liability and reduce the bottom line in terms of cents per ton if correctly implemented by suitably qualified tailings managers and engineers.The aspects that need to be considered as part of responsible tailings management are highlighted in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J, 2015. The development and construction of the Grasberg block cave mine (GBC) is in progress, currently targeting initiation of caving in late 2018. Current production planning anticipates ramping up to full production of 130 000 to 160 000 t/d by 2027. As GBC approaches the production phase, there is a high priority on increasing the accuracy and level of detail in the production plan. The advance of the cave front directly controls the drawbell opening rate that is achievable. Therefore, an essential component of this plan is to produce an undercutting and drawbell sequence that honours the caving parameters that have been set for the mining blocks by the GBC production planning team.The PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine planning team and the Geovia caving business unit have developed a computational tool (Undercut Tool) capable of generating an undercutting sequence that follows a set of caving rules, such as advance rate per tunnel, maximum blasted area per period, control of lead-lag and shape of the undercut face. This tool also produces a drawbell sequence that honours the undercutting advance sequence, which is ultimately used to generate a life-of-mine production plan. This paper describes the inputs and outputs of the Undercut Tool that have been used to compute the long-term production plan for the GBC mine. It will further describe how the Undercut Tool takes into account operational constraints and geotechnical considerations that must be considered when developing a defendable production plan. Included is a discussion of the initial results of the planning outcomes from the tool; it will demonstrate how this work will support specific aspects of the plan such as the detailed undercut production drill and blast plans for the drill ring sequence, as well as how that plan will drive the drawpoint opening plan.CITATION:Villa, D, Brannon, C A, Dipas, C A and Vega, H A, 2017. Xstrata CopperÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations is located in mineral rich north-west Queensland and is one of the largest sources of copper in the world. This world-class underground operation is planned to produce over 6.6 million tonnes of copper ore in 2007 from the X41 and Enterprise Mines. With an underground mining history of over 50 years and underground reserves of over 83 million tonnes at 2.6 per cent copper, mine planning for the future becomes an exciting challenge for the technical team due to the older nature of certain areas. The 1100 Orebody of the X41 mine was one of the first places that copper mining occurred, with its discovery in 1953 - 1954 and mining commencing in the 1960s. Sublevel open stoping mining methods have been employed since that time as the means of extraction, using a primary-secondary sequence to maximise stope turnaround time. Large Transverse Pillars within the 1100 orebody were not mined out in order to provide access for ventilation, power, orepasses and other services. The Panel Pillar, 4180XC and 4010XC pillars are three such Transverse Pillars in the 1100 orebody that will be mined as a final retreat. This paper discusses the technical challenges and issues associated with the extraction of Q390 stope, one of the stopes located in the Panel Pillar, and the design solutions to overcome these issues. Managing the exposure of backfilled stopes of variable fill strength, ensuring the stability of the crown, stope walls and drawpoints, managing vertical openings, re-establishing service networks, and stope filling are the critical issues given consideration for the final design of Q390 stope and other such stopes within a Transverse Pillar. Communication and coordination between the different departments in the mine are essential for the necessary work to be completed in a timely manner to bring pillar stopes into production.

Many mining companies routinely use benchmarking to review their operational activities and associated costs. The aim is to measure operational performance against industry norms, and identify areas where a company is performing better or worse than industry best practice. The goal is continuous improvement.In general, mine technical services, including mining geology activities, are not routinely benchmarked. There are exceptions, such as the cost of drilling per metre and the average discovery cost per unit of metal, but generally mining geology activities are only included indirectly in mining benchmarking studies.Aspects of benchmarking can play a critical role in assisting mining geologists to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the services they provide. Industry norms for many generic mining geology functions have not been developed and measured, and therefore it is impossible to use external benchmarking to assess performance against other mines. But when used in parallel with quantifying the value of mining geology functions and establishing strategic goals for the team, key components of benchmarking methodology can provide essential feedback on how a team is performing against these strategic goals.CITATION:Berry, M, 2014. The in situ rock mass rating system û IRMR - leading to the mining rock mass rating system - MRMR - for jointed rock masses has been used (and abused) in mining operations around the world for the past 27 years. Despite the recent development of elaborate design procedures and computer-aided design packages, MRMR remains one of the most versatile and practical mine design systems available. It is important to realise that the rock mass classification system should not be replaced but rather complemented by more sophisticated and detailed design procedures. The classification system is not only the æcrudeÆ method used for initial assessment (as described in some geotechnical literature) but also in many respects a very effective and practical engineering tool. MRMR could, and should be used during the entire stage of mine life as an integral part of the design process. The objectives of this paper are to illustrate using practical case histories from the past decade, some of the pitfalls of the MRMR classification system, to clarify certain misconceptions in its application and update its mining application.

International tenders for contract mining opportunities require the Contractor to make an assessment of risk for an operation with a life span of up to twenty-five years usually based on data made available by the Client. This paper seeks to address how the Contractor assesses the data and quantifies the risks associated with the project. The areas of risk are common to most projects, but in the--Lontractor's case, risk assessment is carried out on the Client's data base and within a compressed time frame of usually less than six months. Incorporation of that risk assessment into the contract documentation is also discussed. Practical examples are given in a number of areas.

This paper presents the results from research undertaken in the CSIRO-funded Mineral Futures Collaboration Cluster on developing a future vision for the mining and minerals industry – Vision 2040 – in which the industry proactively contributes to long-term benefit for communities and the nation. Our research finds that Australia is currently experiencing mining-led prosperity due to high commodity prices, yet underlying this are challenges for maintaining market share due to lower productivity from extracting lower grade, more remote and complex ores. Whilst much focus has been on developing new technologies for finding and processing such ores, this paper assesses these activities, together with policy and market innovations in the context of needing to strengthen social, environmental and financial capital for long-term benefit. Vision 2010 sees mining activities linked to systems that are net providers of clean water, energy and ecosystem services, rather than minimising negative impacts alone; sovereign wealth funds are used to harness current prosperity for future innovation. Using a case study in lithium and comparisons to iron/steel, coal and copper – we illustrate the opportunities for new technology, policy and market innovations to link the mining and minerals sector in Australia to more sustainable patterns of production, consumption and prosperity.

The application of tunnel boring machines (TBM) for reef mining is a unique practice with benefits over current mining methods given the right geology and geometry of the orebody. The Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) of Nye, Montana, USA operates two mines for obtaining platinum metals. The operation is currently using a 5.5 m diameter open-type machine for further mine development, as well as another TBM that they own.The latest 7.1 km bored tunnel, known as the Blitz Tunnel, will be routed parallel to the ore deposit in igneous mafic intrusive rock, and will be used for the life of the mine operation. It will be used to map the ore deposit, and provide a rail haulage route.Detecting the reef in relation to the TBM requires careful analysis. Diamond core drilling occurs ahead, above, and alongside the machine at every 150 m. The core is drilled, logged, and interpreted on the spot, concurrent with boring. Concrete is a well established and reliable construction material for the permanent lining of tunnels, but shows some weak performance characteristics, which can be overcome by the addition of specialised fibre reinforcement. This paper addresses the particular performance design requirements of segmental linings, discussing the improvements of fi bres on concrete properties. Focus is made on the beneficial effects of fibre reinforcement on the cracking behaviour and the toughness performance, providing a safe and durable tunnel lining.Not only the mechanical performance of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) for segmental linings, but also the durability of the linings has gained growing attention among the designers and consultants. Especially tunnel linings with exposure to media with corrosion potential, such as wastewater sewer tunnels or desalination plant outfall tunnels, have high requirements on their durability. The design of these structures must provide a comprehensive study of durability aspects. Fibre reinforcement can substantially improve the durability of concrete.Research has been carried out on the cracking behaviour of concrete. The beneficial effects of steel fibres on the cracking behaviour reduce the permeability by reducing the flow paths within the concrete. Crack bridging steel fibres create necking effects in bending cracks, leading to earlier closure of the cracks. Further, steel fibres create particular crack formations, which lead to a substantial reduction of the fl ow rates through separation cracks. The results also show that considerable cost savings can be achieved using FRC, as the thickness of the linings can be reduced.The durability design issues will be addressed and underlined by a case history on the Hobson Bay sewer tunnel in Auckland, New Zealand.

This paper provides an overview of methods for measuring tunnel deflection and construction’s effects on the surrounding environment during and post construction. It will also review illustrative case studies from within Australia and overseas that are most relevant to local construction conditions. Systems illustrated include; vibrating wire and fibre optic strain gauges, extensometers, load cells and piezometers. A novel system using radar interferometry which requires no contact to the structure will also be investigated.In Australia, the majority of tunnelling activity occurs in urban areas (or in the case of mining in rural area) with limited seismic risk. However, the unexpected movement of tunnels is an important factor for structural engineers to monitor. During construction, monitoring is focused on the performance of the tunnelling lining, the supports under real conditions and the effects on surrounding infrastructure. After construction, monitoring will determine the effect of live traffic loads and can also evaluate the durability and any degradation of the tunnel. The aging of some tunnels or the forces subjected by nearby major construction can directly lead to a decrease in structural stability and deformation.The conventional way of inspecting and monitoring those tunnel movements is to have engineers physically enter the tunnel and carry out the measurement work. Manual techniques include tunnel wall convergence checks or total station measurement. However the associated costs are high and measurement process is difficult as some tunnel areas are inaccessible and the data collection interval is limited by the speed of the operator.Automated sensor networks utilising extensometers, fibre optics sensors or strain gauges can be used on tunnel segments or surrounding buildings. Copper-Cobalt hydrometallurgy has seen a resurgence in recent years with the development of projects in Zambia and the DRC. Many of the flow sheets are unique in their use of hydrometallurgical techniques to improve performance compared to the older types in current use. The emphasis has moved from direct copper electrowinning/stripping, with multiple stages of precipitation for removal of impurities and concentration of cobalt, to innovative use of solvent extraction and ion exchange with higher cobalt recoveries to final product. The poor quality direct electro-won copper has been supplanted with solvent extraction-electrowinning; with consequent production of LME 'A' quality metal. Many of the precipitation steps in cobalt recovery and concentration, have been replaced with solvent extraction; while the remaining precipitation stages have been enhanced with use of oxidants to improve impurity removal. Operating experience from two of these circuits has shown the benefits of the new technologies and the improved overall recovery of both copper and cobalt into higher quality products.

Risk Management has been applied relatively slowly in the mining industry. Except for the risk concept application in financial considerations, the application of Risk Management in safety management has been far from satisfactory. When applied it was treated in a global occupational safety and health sense. Regardless of how much the mining industry has progressed over the years it is still, in many respects, `state-of-the-art' business. The safety aspects of mining are well known and yet little understood by the public. Regardless of what has been achieved so far and how much effort has been put into it, mining is regarded as an unsafe and somehow rude business. Safety records of the mining industry vary from State-to-State. Latest mining related disasters in PNG and Queensland and some other fatal accidents support this public perception. They purport a need for change in managing safety in the mining industry. The latest mining fatalities have raised the issue: What must be done to improve safety standards? Duty of care, risk management and system engineering concepts can provide some answers. Risk Management principles which have been advocated for some time provide many answers and explanations and can make safety management more constructive and workable. What has been missing so far is that this concept has neither been applied nor has been modified for its practical application and purpose on a larger scale. A risk management approach to the management of safety and health in the mining industry is addressed, herein. This approach does not attempt to provide the solution. It does, however, provide a basic understanding of what Risk and Risk Management are all about. Rational management of risk is addressed in the life cycle and system contexts. A system of continuous improvement is applied. There is always a chain of events, outcome, exposure, consequence(s), and consequence(s) value(s). It means that development of an event takes place in time and space. Dynamic circumstances have been created in or within the system. It is a decision-making process designed to provide a methodology which is directed not toward a mathematical model but toward easy use and application in dynamic working environment, by decision-makers who can be anybody from either a risk taker or a risk creator. The emphasis is placed not only on arriving at the best practical, possible and fair decision but also on structured and systematic acquisition of knowledge about the system, its hazards and associated risks, hence increasing the decision maker's ability to manage the decision-making process related to the management of risk.

The system combines a commercially available CADD system with a commercially available mining/geological package. The methodology used in the establishment of the combined system, the fea- tures of the system and the current status of development are discussed.

One distinctive feature of the global mining industry approaching the twenty-first century is the worldwide commitment of mining houses to large-scale projects in developing countries. One good example is BHP's development of the Escondida copper project in Chile. The Escondida orebody was discovered in 1981 and construction began in July 1988. Mining began in December 1990 at a design capacity of 320 000 tonnes of copper contained in concentrate. Out put has grown significantly and shortly Escondida will become the largest single copper mine in the world producing copper at the rate of 800 000 tonnes per annum, including 80 000 tonnes of copper metal. Escondida provides a case study of the development and growth of a large-scale mining operation in a developing country. Key elements have been innovative financing, the management of country risk, the recruitment of an excellent workforce, the use of advanced technologies and best practice in environmental management and community relations. Escondida is one of the global mining industry's success stories in the 1990s.

This paper documents a process of data analytics and machine learning applied to coalmine roof convergence data. It follows a publication documenting the formation of the database. For each set of analyses Python scripts were utilised to extract data from an SQL database, with subsequent analyses also executed in Python, utilising open-source tools such as scikit-learn. Preliminary analyses with classic machine learning algorithms included multiple logistic regression, K-nearest neighbours, decision tree, random forest, support vector machine, kernel support vector machine, artificial neural network (ANN), naïve Bayes and multiple linear regression. Results indicated that relationships were complex and non-linear, with the artificial neural network most suitable. An ANN model was then refined through a standard process of hyperparameter optimisation and data augmentation to arrive at a final model. Due to the black box nature of the ANN further insight into how the parameters interacted was sought and found with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP values). SHAP values utilise Game Theory, where each input parameter or feature is a ‘player’ while the data set is the ‘team’. The SHAP value is the impact of each player on the target value, essentially establishing the contribution of each input parameter. The results from all analyses are delivered in the paper, together with insights, applications, strengths, and limitations of the methodology.

This paper explores the importance of operators in the overall efficiency of mineral processing plants. With the potential of future control configurations becoming more remote, it is time to review the implementation of control and utilisation of operators. This paper is based on a preliminary review of operators and control room operations and clearly shows that, in the minerals industry, operations are typically run in a reactive mode (with a focus on ensuring equipment operation), rather than in a proactive mode (with a focus on optimising the process performance). The primary reason for this misguided approach is the short sighted thinking applied to the challenges of designing technology and organisational tools capable of addressing the essential operational needs: an approach which inevitably results in a disconnect between people and technology. Contrary to the popular approach of replacing operators with expert systems, the thesis of this paper is that the shift to more complex circuits, with higher demands on processing capability and control, will require the actual upskilling of operators. Experience in mineral processing and other industries indicates that expert systems cope well with small changes but are typically unable to respond to major changes in feed material and this is where the expert operator becomes crucial. Providing operators with ongoing high level training in process understanding, and restructuring how they interact with the plant and interface with the control system is the approach being proposed here - an approach surprisingly underutilised and often absent in the minerals industry today.CITATION:Li, X, Powell, M S and McKeague, W, 2012. "The Mbalam Iron Ore Project covers mineralisation in two areas of metamorphosed hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-west Congo Craton; namely at Mbarga in south-east Cameroon and at Nabeba in north-west Republic of Congo. The site locations are shown in Figures 1 and 2.The Mbalam Project history is an example of a compressed, yet highly successful, exploration timetable. Due to the thick inaccessible equatorial forest location, the first access was by helicopter in February 2007 at the Mbarga Deposit. Drilling commenced four months later in June 2007. A maiden JORC Code compliant æhigh-grade hematiteÆ inferred mineral resource (190 Mt at 60 per cent Fe) was defined in May 2008, followed by a maiden æitabirite hematiteÆ inferred resource in July 2008 (1.2 Bt at 37 per cent Fe). Subsequently, road access to Nabeba was established in January 2010, with a maiden high-grade hematite inferred mineral resource (200 Mt at 63 per cent Fe) identified only five months later in June 2010. A maiden itabirite hematite inferred resource at Nabeba was announced in June 2012 (1.4 Bt at 34 per cent Fe). The success of the exploration programs has been due to two main factors: Establishment of high-quality camps and facilities at Mbarga and later at Nabeba in Republic of Congo. Exploration support included satellite links for site servers and communications, field logging computers, data acquisition software, an on-site sample preparation laboratory, portable hand-held X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and company-owned drill rigs from 2009. An experienced and dynamic technical support group based in Perth to provide database facilities, data evaluation, internal auditing and software support, resulting in expedited resource estimation and economic evaluation with state-of-the-art mining software. In June 2012, Sundance Resources Ltd announced the current mineral resources for the project of 775.4 Mt at 57.2 per cent Fe of high-grade hematite and 4.047 Bt at 36.3 per cent Fe of itabirite hematite. In December 2012, high-grade hematite ore reserves of 436.3 Mt at 62.6 per cent Fe were announced. These world-class resources and reserves have been delineated and evaluated in a very rapid time frame. The new environmental legislation of 1986 was left incomplete and to date remains so. The 'missing' process by which environmental consideration should be applied was never embodied in law and has predisposition to a wide interpretation. The Resource Statutes which govern land use and development place demands on the environmental process without that definition. The Resource Statutes are themselves under review by Government. There is a new Government Department of Conservation. It is still in its early days and facing a challenge to compose its role as a steward over large tracts of land holding significant marketable resources, animal, vegetable, mineral, and abstract. It has also taken over numerous consent and advocacy roles in legislation beyond its own empowering Act. Enter the mining company, anxious if not able to get an easy passage for consents to prospect and mine, then at least to have a clear path to tread to get there, within a fixed time period. Whichever options appear available to process environmental approvals, public participation is that being favoured most by the regulatory bodies. Where a public notification of consent applications is mandatory, public participation should lead to the fastest track available.
