Adularia-sericite epithermal ore deposits have well-documented alteration mineral zonation patterns with distinctive geochemical signatures. Proper use of whole-rock geochemistry can provide useful vectors for exploration and can enhance efforts to characterise and quantify the mineralogy and intensity of hydrothermal alteration.   Analyses of Au and Ag provide the most direct vectors to orebodies, and pathfinder elements such as As, Sb, Hg, Zn, Pb and Se are similarly zoned around at least some orebodies. However, the minerals that contain these elements occur almost exclusively in veins, and therefore identifying geochemical vectors related to wallrock alteration that is zoned outward from orebodies is crucial for effective exploration.   Distal alteration zones contain quartz-illite-chlorite-carbonate-pyrite, whereas samples proximal to veins contain quartz-adularia-pyrite, with lesser though variable illite-chlorite-carbonate. Therefore, adularia-sericite epithermal ore deposits show K alteration in their cores. The resulting K-metasomatism can be evaluated in several ways. Areas that have been most intensely altered are commonly characterised by highest K contents, but these results can be complicated by variations in rock type across the prospective area. Potassium mass balance results provide a robust and rigorous assessment of K-metasomatism, however, knowledge about the composition of fresh rocks and correct identification of fresh precursor compositions of altered rocks are required. Three alteration indices provide effective evaluation of K-metasomatism: 1.   the K number, which is the ratio K/(2Ca+K+Na) (molar); 2.   Barrie values [(K2O * 100) / Sr]; and 3.   the Rb/Sr ratio. In most places these provide similar vectors, although K numbers can be complicated by the appearance of hydrothermal calcite and/or albite.   Plots of K/Al vs (2 Ca + K + Na)/Al (molar) allow estimation of the intensity of K-metasomatism and its mineralogical products, thereby complementing traditional XRD and petrographic studies of alteration minerals.

The upper Arkansas River south of Leadville, Colorado, USA, contains deposits of fluvial tailings from historical mining operations in the Leadville area. These deposits are possible non-point sources of acid and metal contamination to surface- and ground-water systems. We used stable-metal isotopes to help ascertain metal retention and release mechanisms that influence metal transport from the deposits to shallow ground-water systems. To accomplish this, we excavated an intact core from a small fluvial tailings deposit and performed laboratory column experiments to examine the amount of metals leaching through the core. Deionised water was continuously applied to the top of the core, and effluent was collected from the bottom of the core for a period of about two months. Three saturation conditions were used, including unsaturated, partially saturated, and fully saturated. Reducing conditions developed upon partial and complete saturation of the core. During the unsaturated leaching phase, core effluents were acidic (pH 2.8 - 3.5) and contained elevated metal concentrations. During a portion of the unsaturated leaching phase, stable-metal isotope spikes and conservative tracers were simultaneously applied to the top of the core. The isotopes provide a means to delineate metal behaviour within the core. During the unsaturated leaching phase, the isotope spikes did not exhibit breakthrough with simultaneously added conservative tracers. However, some of the stable-metal isotope spikes did break through when reducing conditions occurred in the core (during the partial- and completesaturation conditions). In this paper, we use Cd as an example of the utility of stable-metal isotopes in geochemical studies. In the case of Cd, after the core was partially saturated, the 111Cd spike was released as evidenced by a change in the Cd isotope ratios in the effluent. This release continued during the fully saturated leaching phase, however, the total Cd concentration did not increase. These results suggest that the 111Cd spike was retained inside the core during the unsaturated leaching phase, and only partially released as reducing conditions developed. Results from this core-leaching experiment indicate there is a large reservoir of water-soluble material within the fluvial tailings deposit, which yields elevated metal concentrations and high acidity, and which may degrade adjacent ground- and surface-water quality. Use of stable metal isotopes in this study facilitated the determination of different metal-retention processes, metal-release processes, and metal sources in the fluvial tailings deposit in response to changing geochemical conditions.

The disposal of residues from coal preparation and processing will to an increasing extent require investigation and consideration of the environmental problems resulting as a consequence of this. Different authors (Diingelhoff and Plankert, 1983; Hasenpatt, 1985; Szczepanska and Twardowska, 1987) have concentrated primarily on the content and the mobilisation of inorganic contaminants such as chlorides, metals and heavy metals from spoil tips, while no publications have yet been found on the question of a possible emission of organic contaminants (PCB, PAH, HC HC) from processing residues. Here the flotation residues in particular are able to bind larger quantities of organic contaminants by physi-sorptive means because of their large specific surface and, after disposal, to be re-emitt than into the environment. The flotation agents used in coal flotation are mixtures of technical distillation products with a correspondingly fluctuating composition. As Hey, 1986 showed, they may contain, in addition to the main components (n-alkanes, alcohols, surfactants), over 50 individual trace substances. In conjunction with the structural-chemical similarity of the individual components, this complicates the quantitative analysis of individual components considerably. For the analysis of hydrocarbon content of flotation products by means of extraction with organic solvents in accordance with DIN 38408, H18, the difficulty arises, besides the insufficient sensitivity at low concentrations, that geogeonic hydrocarbons are extracted from the coal as. well and the analysis results are thus falsified. These problems were overcome by the application of the 14C radiotracer method where certain components of the flotation agents are marked with radioactive carbon (14C). By measurement of the radioactivity of solid and liquid samples, the concentration of the marked substance can be measured very sensitively and precisely, whereby the accumulative measurement of similar organic substances is ruled out. Thus the reaction path of certain substances in complex reagent mixtures such as flotation agents can be traced excellently and the conceivable environment burden resulting from flotation tailings disposal can be estimated. In this paper, the adsorption behaviour of typical components of coal flotation agents are investigated for different coals and types of gangue material, the reagent content of flotation concentrates and tailings, as well as the mobility of the reagents adsorbed onto solids. The knowledge of adsorption and desorption mechanisms of unpolar hydrocarbons emulsified in water to solids are also of particular interest for the understanding of processes of organic soil contamination and for the further development of washing processes for oil-contaminated soils.

The magmatic arcs of SE Asia and SW Pacific contain some of the worldÆs major magmatic-hydrothermal gold deposits. Most gold deposits in SE Asian and SW Pacific arcs formed during periods of plate reorganisation rather than during periods of normal or steady state subduction. These plate reorganisations were caused initially by the collisions of the Australian Craton with the Philippines-Halmahera Arc and the Ontong Java Plateau with the Melanesian Arc at ~25 Ma. A second Mid-Miocene period of mineralisation accompanied plate reorganisation following maximum rotation or extrusion of Indochina and cessation of spreading in the South China Sea at ~17 Ma. However, the vast majority of deposits from New Zealand to Taiwan formed since 7 Ma during an important period of tectonic reorganisation that accompanied and followed changes in the relative motion between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates between ~8 and 3.5 Ma. Magmatism in unusual tectonic settings produced the most abundant and largest deposits with many deposits associated with high-K calc-alkaline, shoshonite, adakite and alkaline magmatism. In particular peak mineralisation appears related to melting of sub-arc lithosphere that has been previously modified by subduction. During large-scale plate reorganisation this can occur towards or at the end of a period of normal subduction, following arc collision or accompanying subduction reversal at approximately the same time in different parts of a complex system of arcs such as in SE Asia and the SW Pacific.

At depths greater than several kilometres in the crust, elevated temperature, confining pressure, and the presence of reactive pore fluids typically drives rapid destruction of permeability in fractured and porous rock. Ongoing deformation is required to regenerate permeability and facilitate the high fluid flux necessary to produce hydrothermal ore systems. A dominant influence on the evolution of fluid pathways in hydrothermal systems is provided by stress states, fluid pressures and reactions that drive permeability enhancement and compete with permeability destruction processes (Cox, Braun and Knackstedt, 2001). Indosinian (T) orogeny amalgamated the Mongolia-Xingan fold zone, the North China continent, the Yangtzi platform and the SE China fold zone into a unified continent. The early to middle Yanshanian (J-K,) orogeny created a Cordilleran type active continental margin in East Asia, reactivated the consolidated East China continent, and generated a large amount of granitoids, calc-alkaline volcanics and W, Sn, Mo, Cu, Au, and U ore deposits. The late Yanshanian (K2) orogeny began a transition to the western Pacific type continental margin. A tensional environment led to the development of peralkaline magmatism and the formation of continental basins with red beds. The Himalayan (Tr-Q) orogeny was characterised by a backarc spreading and rifting regime. The dominant magmatism was continental basaltic.

Process control applications to the unit operations in both the Lead and Copper Smelters are reviewed. The basic aim of this control is to smooth plant inputs to produce an output of consistent quality in terms of chemical composition, temperature and physical properties. Most effort has been put into the process bottlenecks, namely in the process baghouse of the Lead Smelter and in the Copper Smelter reverberatory furnaces. The method of approach is discussed, firstly extensive plant measurement and data logging plus identification of factors which most affect the unit operation and secondly control of these factors to smooth out variations. This has been possible due to the development in-house of on-line instruments to measure the critical variables and the external use of computers for plant control. Some of these instrument developments are also briefly discussed.

With the post-war expansion of mmmg activities on its Western group of mines, the management of Lake View and Star Limited has commenced a project for the improvement of underground ventilation.The major part of this project is to provide adequate return airways for the ventilation of the deep levels. To this end, the Ivanhoe South Extended shaft is being enlarged, and ultimately an exhaust fan with a capacity of 180,000 cu. ft. of air per minute will be installed at the shaft collar.Prior to 1932, the shaft was used exclusively for baling water from the 800 and 2,000 ft. levels. These two levels are the only ones connected to workings from the Horseshoe lease. After the installation of pumping plant at the Horseshoe Main Shaft, baling was discontinued, and the water was graVitated from dams to the pumps on the 1,000 and 2,000 ft. levels.Water makes into the shaft, through a series of fault planes, between the 600 and 1,500 ft. horizons. The total flow is 16 gal. per minute, of which approximately 7 gal. per minute graVitates to the 800 ft. level. As a big proportion of the water dropped uncontrolled through the shaft, a downcast current of air approximating 20,000 c.f.m. was induced. The precious metallogenic belt and its geoloqical-tectonic location in eastern China.The precious metallogenic belt of eastern China is located in the western part of the Pacific gold metallogenic belt, and occurs in the upper levels of the continent cut by a deep fault structure tending NNE and NE, and active during the Mesozoic. In this paper presented are the criteria used when assessing the harmfulness of shocks affecting the buildings. Those criteria are based on the value of speed or accelerations of building vibrations. Presented is the scale of harmfulness of vibrations of Langefors and Kihlstrom, Bureau of Mines, and SWD contained in the Polish Norm PN-85/B-02170. The parameters of the mining shocks measured by the Lubin coal mine station were compared with the parameters calculated as per the correlations (regression curves). The average acceleration calculated from the correlations for eight measurements is only two per cent higher than the actual one. But the average frequency of vibrations calculated from the correlations for eight measurements is as much as 2.22 times lower than the actual one. In order to analyse whether that takes place in the whole range of the energy of shocks compared were the results of calculations from the correlations for various magnitudes of shocks and various distances from their epicentre with the results of the measurements. From that it follows that only for the shocks of the highest energies the lowering of the frequency of vibrations by two times causes movement from the higher zone of harmfulness to the lower one (for example from the IV to III). In the one-family houses in Lubin there were the damages that are characteristic for not only for the III but also for the IV sphere of harmfulness as per the SWD scale. That should be explained via further research and maybe it would be feasible to draw out a new correlation to determine the frequencies only for high values of energy of shocks and determine the preciseness of the acceleration and frequency correlations used presently.

A geologic, petrographic and geochemical study has been performed on the pyroclastic flow deposits in the coastal area of East Zhejiang Province, Southeast China. This study leads to classification of the pyroclastic flow deposits into three associations: the extrusive type, the surge type and the ash flow type welded tuff associations. Through detailed investigation and comparison of the characteristics of these lithologic associations, with emphasis on the welded tuffs, a comprehensive model has been proposed to demonstrate the petrogenesis of the pyroclastic flow deposits.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, fatalities from road transport accidents represented an average of over 97 per cent of all transport related accidents between 1997 and 2002. With increasing traffic density, tunnels are becoming a more viable means of providing alternative travel routes to ease areas of congestion in the road transport network. However, unlike open road conditions, a fire incident in the confined space of a tunnel environment may impact upon many users that are remote from the incident location. In this context, designing for an appropriate level of safety in tunnels is therefore an important consideration for achieving consistency in the life safety measures for users of the road transport network. Unfortunately, like fire safety engineering design for buildings, there are presently no clear measures in the design processes to assess the adequacy of the design in terms of attaining the level of safety implicated in the design objectives. This is partly due to the indeterminate nature in which the design objective or the level of performance measure is stated û the intent of the objective is relatively clear but the measure of it is not. Another reason is the lack of a standardised procedure for determining the critical design variables affecting life safety. This is important to ascertain consistency in the use or adoption of the important parameters for design. This paper looks at the processes involved in the fire engineering design of road tunnels that are currently practised. A review of the design processes for fire safety in road tunnels is provided, which includes the range of fire scenarios in a tunnel environment, the traffic flow and composition, the relevant fire protection systems, the ventilation and smoke control system, the egress provisions and the benefits of incorporating fire brigade intervention. A simplified risk assessment approach is developed for a typical road tunnel to assess and evaluate the impact of a range of design parameters on life safety. Using a sensitivity technique, the important variables are then identified and means of reducing design variations associated with them are recommended. The technique may be further refined for use in the development of codes or guidelines in order to develop a suitable means of deriving more consistent design values, and hence achieve better consistency in the overall level of safety in the design.

A stibnite flotation concentrate from Costerfield in Victoria was found to contain 63.3 g/t An while its sizing distribution indicated that 81.6 per cent of the material was less than 38 ¦m. A 24 hour cyanidation test by a standard bottle roll method recovered 15 per cent of this gold. Pressure cyanidation under conditions of ambient temperature, 40 per cent pulp density, an oxygen pressure of 1000 - 2000 kPa and an initial NaCN concentration of 15 kg/t, resulted in a recovery of 65 pe cent of the gold after only two hours of leaching. Aqueous pressure preoxidation of the concentrate followed by the standard bottle roll cyanidation realised gold recoveries as high as 96 per cent. South Africa is a semi arid, water scarce country that has undergone recent major political and social transformation. This transformation has ensured that water management has become a primary environmental concern in the South African mining industry, raising the status of water from an ancillary service to a fundamental factor in mine planning. The coal mining industry has been involved in the development of integrated catchment management plans since the late-1980s when a series of initiatives commenced in catchments where collieries operated. The plans focused attention on water supply and water demand management, the equitable access to water supplies, and intersectoral approaches to decision making, before the promulgation of new legislative and policy frameworks. Development of an integrated watershed management plan for the Olifants River basin, located in the Mpumalanga province, commenced in 1990. The Olifants River is an international river basin of 54 570 square kilometres and shared by South Africa and Mozambique. The upper watershed, locally called the Witbank Dam catchment, will be the focus of this paper. It has an area of 3400 square kilometres and is the major coal mining, power generating, and maize-growing region of the country. The processes embodied in the integrated watershed management plan had no formal guidelines but rather developed in an ongoing fashion over time. The plan commenced with a situation analysis involving the major stakeholders that identified principal technical shortfalls. These shortfalls were investigated under the guidance of multisectoral committees. The Olifants River Forum was started to extend awareness of the initiatives on an informal level throughout the whole watershed. The results of the investigations enabled water quality guidelines to be established for the upper catchment. To achieve the guideline levels additional initiatives were developed including a scheme to manage mine water discharges into the river system, the development of a standard four-step water management process, investigation and development of innovative mine water treatment processes, specifically sulfate reduction technologies, the use of gypsiferous mine water for irrigation, river and dam hydrological models, groundwater models and biomonitoring. Significant outcomes from the process have been achieved including the improvement in water quality in the Witbank Dam catchment. Equally significant have been the development of partnerships between businesses and between businesses and the community specifically in the use of mine water for irrigation. The plan realised a number of requirements for success including, the development of trust, openness and transparency with information, the essential need for consultation and negotiation and the involvement of third parties to validate information. The future still holds the potential for disputes between upstream and downstream water users but understanding, transparency and accountability between all players have, and will in future, enable the matching of the increasing demands on a scarce water resource to the needs of all.

Within the project against pollution in the Gulf of Naples (Italy) it was envisaged to build a sewage collection tunnel whose tunnelling section is about 30 m2 and whose length is over 4 km. The formations to be bored through feature heteregeneous volcanic deposits made up of either lenses or lava, lapilli and pozzolan layers and ashstone silts. The cover ranges between 10 and 30 metres. The surface is heavily built-up requiring then an accurate monitoring and reduction of noise, vibrations and settlements. The building of the tunnel is therefore carried out by means of a boom tunnelling machine equipped with a mechanized shield. Support along the complete excavation perimeter is provided by linerplates together with an immediate cement grouting behind them. At a later stage the concrete lining will be cast in place.

Two-dimensional (2D) estimation approaches have significant advantages over three-dimensional (3D) approaches when dealing with a narrow vein- or layer-like geometry. The main motivation for 2D estimation is that bias due to non-additivity of grade is avoided. The various aspects of 2D estimation are illustrated by use of a case study from the 1A Shoot Nickel deposit at Leinster, Western Australia. The width of the 1A mineralisation is variable, and so are the angles of drilling intersection. Consequently, the variable of interest (in this case nickel grade) is not suitable for direct kriging because it is defined on non-uniform support. However, grade can also be defined as the ratio of two variables that are suitable for direct kriging: thickness and accumulation. In the 2D approach, tonnage equates to thickness and metal equates to the product of grade and thickness, also called æaccumulationÆ. In the simplest approach we can independently krige accumulation and thickness and derive the grade by the ratio of the two resultant estimates. The thickness and accumulation variables must be in a consistent projection orientation, for example a horizontal projection in the case of steeply inclined mineralisation like 1A. Because the density is not constant across the 1A (and most other) deposits, the issue of density weighting is also discussed. The impact of the correlation between grade and length, or grade and density are important issues in implementation of 2D estimation. The circumstances under which these correlations need to be taken into account (by co-kriging) are reviewed. Finally some comments are made on the final use of the resultant 2D estimate for mine planning purposes.

The Merensky Reef at Northam Platinum Mine in South Africa is characterised by a high degree of variability with respect to reef elevation (difficult to mine), as well as mineralogy and texture (difficult to process). Development along strike and down dip of multiple reef types has led to unpredictable run-of-mine characteristics that pose problems for the mineral processing circuit at Northam. Following mining terminology, Normal, Transitional (NP2) and Pothole (P2) Merensky reef types can be defined, and this geometallurgical study aims to characterise and understand the relationship between their mineralogical characteristics and laboratory scale batch flotation performance. The plagioclase-rich NP2 reef ore is the easiest ore to process in terms of capacity for high mill throughput as well as flotation performance. The lack of very fine-grained disseminated sulfide textures in the NP2 reef ore results in better liberation characteristics relative to the Normal and P2 reef types. Consequently, chalcopyrite, pentlandite and sulfide recoveries are highest for the NP2 reef ore. The lack of ferromagnesian minerals in the NP2 reef ore also results in the recovery of the least amount of floatable gangue during flotation tests. The Normal and P2 reef ores are similar to each other, with an orthopyroxene-rich mineralogy with associated alteration minerals. The P2 reef is also characterised by the highest sulfide content and degree of pentlandite liberation. Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite liberation is only significantly increased by a change in grind for the Normal reef ore. The change in grind, however, only significantly affects pentlandite flotation performance and overall froth stability for the Normal reef ore. However, for all three ores, a small change in grind has a detrimental effect on pentlandite flotation performance.

Three ores (sulfidic, oxidized and carbonaceous) were analyzed to determine the effects of leaching time, ore depth, and ore mineralogy on cyanide species concentration. NaCN solutions were percolated through opaque columns filled with milled ore. Column design made liquid sample collection possible from various depths at specific times. The concentrations of weak acid dissociable(WAD) and total cyanide, Fe(CN)63 , Fe(CN)64 , SCN , and Cu(CN)43 were determined for each sample. Extended percolation time led to increases in WAD cyanide concentra- tions and decreased SCN and Cu(CN)43 concentrations regardless of ore depth. WAD cyanide concentration decreased while Fe(CN)64 concentra- tion increased with ore depth. Highest concentrations of Fe(CN)64- SCN and Cu(CN)43 were found in the sulfidic ore, with expected low WAD cyanide concentrations.
