"Pulp and froth zone characterization in a flotation circuit to improve transport of valuable minerals remains a challenge. Even though some significant breakthroughs have been made in the development of collectors in terms of selectivity, the control of gangue drainage is still the main bottleneck to achieve the production of a clean concentrate.Over the last decade, COREM’s team has been working on technologies to improve the selectivity of flotation circuits by tuning their hydrodynamic conditions using online instruments such as the bubble viewer, Jg sensor and gas hold-up. As part of its research program, COREM also developed the half-life column that establishes the relationship between the collection zone (bubble-particle attachment) and the cleaning zone (foam) of a flotation machine. In recent years, COREM has continued the development of the prototypes to make them more robust and improve the accuracy of their measurements.Recently, these hydrodynamic instruments were installed in an industrial process at Raglan Mine in order to diagnose and control the impact of hydrodynamic parameters versus the recovery and the quality of the Ni concentrate produced. Sampling campaigns of hydrodynamic parameters demonstrated that froth height could be optimized in order to increase recovery and quality of the concentrate at the same time. The specific effect of the froth height impacts both the pulp and the froth zones. Along with the impact on the drainage of the concentrate, it was observed that froth height also contributes to enhance the collection of particles in the pulp leading to an increase in metallic units.IntroductionOnce the particles of the minerals of interest are attached to the air bubbles injected in the pulp, the flotation process is driven by air dispersion parameters and froth properties. The pulp is usually responsible for the collision between air bubbles and hydrophobic particles of interest while the froth zone aims to upgrade the selectivity of the particles floated through drainage of the unwanted hydrophilic particles. Over the last four decades, flotation hydrodynamics has been extensively studied. Superficial gas velocity (Jg), gas hold-up (eg), Sauter mean bubble diameter measurements (d32) and bubble surface area flux (Sb) are among the most assessed parameters in flotation plants worldwide either to quantify the gas dispersion parameters or to optimize them (Fournier et al., 2015). McGill University has developed several sensors able to measure these parameters at industrial scale (Tavera et al., 1996; Finch et al., 1999; Chen et al. 2001)."

"Sampling in the mineral processing industry has always been a subject which has received considerable discussion. There have been many volumes written on theory, techniques and practical application of sampling. However, until recently, the companies were not completely aware of the potential savings available with properly designed sampling systems both to assist in pieces: control and final product values.Definition In our discussion today, we will define sampling as the operation of removing a part, convenient in quantity for analysis, from a whole, which is of much greater hulk, and removing it in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested, i.e. size of particle, moisture content, specific gravity content, mineral and chemical composition, are the same in both the sample and the whole.Application It has been well established that undetected errors can result in large economic losses, thus most firms depend upon some type of sampling and sample analysis as a control in their continuous processing of materials. Despite the large investment in facilities and personnel the ""analysis"" of a sample can be no more accurate or reliable than the sample on which it is being based. The importance of sampling is recognized by a great many but it is appreciated by only a few, largely because it is sometimes one of the items which is taken for granted."

"In October 1984, Rocanville Division began using a stacking system to handle potash mill tailings. Previous to this date, mill tailings were slurried to the top of the tailings pile and allowed to debrine while flowing mobile stackers. The stackers consist of cyclone packs to debrine the tailings and drag conveyors with screw discharges to deposit the tailings onto the existing pile. The paper will deal with the various aspects of the project from conception to its present state. Key Words: stacking, mobile stackers, Linatex Separators, potash mill tailings, reclaim brine ponds, settling ponds, tailings pile. IntroductionPrevious to 1984, when the stacking project was first implemented, potash mill tailings were handled as follows. Mill tailings were first debrined to approximately 65% solids using a cyclone cluster. The cyclone underflows were then introduced onto a vacuum scroll filter table. Here the tailings were further debrined and discharged into the disposal tank where the tailings were reslurried with reclaim brine and pumped to the tailings disposal site. At the disposal site the slurry was discharged onto the tailings pile and by a natural settling process the tailings were debrined with the brine ultimately collected in the reclaim brine ponds. The shape and profile of the tailings pile was controlled by building salt dikes to control the flow of the discharged tailings slurry. As the tailings pile grew in height, booster pumps were added to the disposal system."

From the early 70?s, ?Centre de Recherche Minérale? (CRM) has conducted and co-ordinated Research and Development activities for the mineralurgical and metallurgical industries. Since 1999, CRM has continued its mandate through COREM which is a consortium of 13 members that uses the benefits and advantages of collaborative pre-competitive industry / university research. In particular, COREM?s ?In-Situ Optimization Group? is involved in the implementation of modern optimization and control tools. The POP Project was launched in order to increase and consolidate the use of modern optimization and control tools and methods for mineralurgical and metallurgical processes. To ensure a successful transfer in the industry, there are a number of essential activities that have to be undertaken. These activities have been identified by COREM?s members and are grouped into three main modules: - R&D Module: Research and Development in universities, research centres and other partners; - Technology Transfer Module: integration of new tools and methods into the POP Software, industrial applications and technical support; - Training Module: education of new engineers in universities, continuing education of plant personnel through on-site workshops and resource networking by specific information exchange tools. This paper outlines the opportunities that led to the definition of the POP Project and describes its main modules. The main features of the POP Software are presented, the first application is described and finally, future developments are discussed.

"Gold-bearing mineralization at Anomaly A occurs in polydeformed Ordovician turbidites of the Kendall Mountain Formation of the St. Croix belt in southwestern New Brunswick, and is hosted by WSWtrending, shallow-dipping, brittle-ductile high-strain zones associated with the latest stage of the second of four regional deformation events. Gold-bearing syn-deformational stockwork, massive, and multiply brecciated quartz-sulfide veined zones form irregular pods and sheets up to several meters thick, which contain arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, stibnite, and a variety of rare minerals that are gold-bearing. Mineralized zones are enveloped by locally auriferous, weakly to intensely altered wall rock. Vein paragenesis includes: (1) early (pre- to syn-D2) quartz-chlorite veins that are largely the product of migration of quartz by pressure solution; (2) crosscutting, multiphase, vuggy quartz-sulfide veins that contain most of the gold and are interpreted to be structurally controlled; (3) late, crosscutting, nondeformed, non-gold-bearing veins containing laumontite, chlorite, muscovite, quartz, fluorite, and base metal sulfides. Carbonate-poor alteration associated with zones of gold mineralization is lithology-specific, and appears to reflect overprinting of multiple events. Major elements removed during alteration include Si, Na, Mn, and Mg. The minor and trace elements removed include Co, Li, Sc, and possibly Sr, Ni, and Zn. Minor and trace elements added include Au, Ag, As, Sb, S, and possibly F, Cu, Pb, and Zr. On the basis of proximity, time constraints, and a similar ore mineral assemblage, gold mineralization at Anomaly A is interpreted to be a distal equivalent of the intrusion-related gold mineralization at the nearby Clarence Stream Main zone deposit. La minéralisation aurifère de l’Anomalie A se trouve dans des turbidites Ordoviciennes polydéformées de la Formation de Kendall Mountain, dans la ceinture de Ste-Croix du sud-ouest du Nouveau Brunswick, où elle est contenue dans des zones de déformation fragile-ductile à faible pendage de direction OSO associées au dernier stade du second de quatre épisodes de déformation régionale. A commercial titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo has been gas nitrided in this work, in pure nitrogen atmosphere in order to improve its surface properties. The nitriding was performed at two different temperatures, 950 and 1050°C, and for different periods of time. The influence of the initial surface roughness on the diffusion process and on the surface properties of this material was studied. The influence of the processing parameters of gas nitriding on the surface roughness, phase modifications and the microstructure of the nitrided layers has been analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Microhardness profiles were obtained on cross-sections of the samples after gas nitriding applying a Knoop indenter.

Brazilian sulphide ores can contain a significant content of chloride and fluoride, which are harmful to bacteria and thus bioleaching. This work summarizes a four-year research investigation on the effect of fluoride on both bacterial growth and sulphide bioleaching, supported by studies carried out with secondary copper ores. Firstly, the influence of fluoride on the kinetics of ferrous iron bio-oxidation with Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans was addressed. Values as low as 10.0 mg/L F- fully inhibited bacterial growth, although fluoride toxicity could be overcome by the presence of aluminium, which reduced the concentration of hydrofluoric acid through the formation of aluminium-fluoride complexes. This required at least a 2:1 aluminium/fluoride molar ratio, which ensured bacterial growth rate values similar to that observed in the absence of fluoride ions. Subsequently, both batch and column bioleaching with mesofiles (30 ºC), moderate thermofile (50 ºC) or hyperthermophiles (67.5 ºC) of two secondary copper ore samples were analyzed with focus on the relevant effects of fluoride-containing minerals on the bioleaching of such sulphide ores.

"Introduction The occurrence of coal was first reported in the Drumheller area in 1793 but it was not until 1912 that production of coal was recorded. In that year 13,000 tonnes were mined in the Drumheller area. Three years later the Drumheller mines ranked next in the Province to those in the Crowsnest and Lethbridge districts, with an output of 225,000 tonnes. By 1917 production had increased to 600,000 tonnes, moving Drumheller to second place in output in the province, second only to the Crowsnest district. It held this rank until 1960. Production, almost all from underground mining, rose to over a million tonnes a year by 1920 and remained between one and two million tonnes per year until 1954. Competition from newly discovered oil and natural gas, beginning around 1950 caused a steady loss of domestic coal markets, especially from underground mines. By 1960 Drumheller's production had fallen below a half a million tonnes per year and the field ranked third in output in the province, being surpassed by new stripping operations in the Castor field. By 1965 only a couple of producing mines remained in the Drumheller valley, and output was only about a quarter of a million tonnes per year(1). Throughout the life of the field production was seasonal, depending mainly on the domestic heating market. In 1979 the last mine ceased production. For the last several years of its operation it had remained open in the summers to provide tours for visitors(2). The Drumheller mining operations were located along or near the Red Deer River valley which is 300 to 400 feet deep, and extended from a few miles above the city of Drumheller to East Coulee, about 13 miles down the river in a south-easterly direction. Intervening mining communities existed for some years at Wayne and Rosedale. During the peak years of production some 2000 to 2500 miners and their families lived in these communities and the surrounding areas."

"In the last thirty years, the study of earthquake mechanisms has emphasized the major role of rock friction. Earthquakes appear to be the result of a frictional instability and occur by sudden slippage along a pre-existing fault or a plate interface. Multiphysics couplings play a major role in earthquake nucleation and seismic slip. The effect of shear heating and thermal pressurization may be of prime importance in the control of the stability of shear deformation inside the slipping zone. Other mechanisms in relation with thermal decomposition of minerals affect the pore pressure and the temperature evolution of the system, and can play a significant role in the extreme strain localization observed in field. The actual width of the localized zone is a key parameter for understanding fault weakening mechanisms. On the basis of field observations, laboratory experiments and recent advanced modeling, these phenomena are analyzed and discussed in order to bring some new insights in the understanding of earthquakes nucleation.INTRODUCTIONIn the last thirty years, the study of earthquake mechanisms has emphasized the major role of rock friction. Earthquakes appear to be the result of a frictional instability and occur by sudden slippage along a pre-existing fault or a plate interface (Scholz, 1998; Sykes, 1978). The conceptual model of spring slider system is commonly used to represent the interaction between an elastic crustal block and a fault zone. Stick-slip instability is possible if the softening rate of the shear resistance of the fault zone is high enough as compared to the stiffness of the crustal block. Therefore, weakening mechanisms that can explain how the frictional resistance of a fault decreases with slip and/or slip rate is of prime importance to understand how an earthquake nucleates. In recent years, several drilling programs in active faults (e.g. the Nojima fault in Japan, Boullier, 2011; the Aigion Fault in Greece, Cornet et al. 2004, the Chelungpu fault in Taiwan, Ma et al. 2006, and the San Andreas fault in the U.S.A. Ellsworth et al. 2000) as well as high velocity friction experiments (e.g. Tanikawa et al 2012a; Tanikawa et al. 2012b) have highlighted the physico-chemical processes involved in the nucleation of seismic slip (see for the example the review paper of Niemeijer et al. 2012)."

Raising capital by issuing debt or equity is necessary in almost every corporation. In the field of corporate finance, the raising of capital is a heavily-studied topic. However, some of what is studied on this topic in corporate finance is not applicable in the mining industry. There are also many financing options that were created for the mining industry such as flow-through shares, prepaid forwards, and royalty sales. The cyclical nature of the industry makes the risk-return profile of financings more difficult to estimate than in other industries. Additionally, the methods used to assess firm value are different than other industries, as the values of orebodies are not included on balance sheets. For precious metals companies, which are a hedge against most other securities, there are additional complications with determining investor expectations and cost of equity. This thesis puts forth a decision-making framework to explain mine financing choices from the perspective of mining companies. The approach is threefold. First, all of the major equity and debt financing instruments available to mining companies are presented and analyzed. Each financing method is assessed on a wide range of criteria. Next, these concepts are applied in case studies of four companies: BHP Billiton, Barrick Gold, Teck Resources, and Noront Resources. For each company, the overall choice of financing methods is shown and analyzed. The effect of financing choices on the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is calculated. The final section deals with case studies of individual mine finance decisions during the past two years.

The mineral wealth of pre-Cambrian rocks in Canada has been the subject of much study by geologists and engineers (members of this Institute), particularly so in the past few years, following discoveries of mineral deposits in areas far a part. This interest is well worth sustaining knowing the numerous rich producing mines within the pre-Cambrian formations, and the vast area covered by its rocks throughout this country. The pre-Cambrian has yielded minerals, both metallic and non-metallic; of these a much diversified list could be made. In more than one district we can point to mining as being responsible for the opening up of new sections, attracting a population into regions which otherwise would have remained virgin land of little commercial value. In these pre-Cambrian formations are found the rich copper deposits of Michigan, producing without interruption since 1845, and from which seven billion pounds of copper has been won; while in Minnesota and the adjoining district, at the head of Lake Superior, are mined iron ores which have rendered possible the great steel manufacturing industry of United States, the base of the economic structure of that wealthy country. The pre-Cambrian has given Canada the nickel-copper mines of the Sudbury district, the silver deposits of Cobalt and the gold camps of Porcupine and Kirkland Lake. With all of these our members are familiar; and it suffices to mention them to bring to mind pictures of the wealth and 'the growing population, in a word the importance of mining in?those sections of the country.

"Significant progress has been made over the past few years on characterizing and understanding the hydrodynamic properties of frothers and collectors and their effect on flotation performance. This new understanding of the relationship between chemistry and hydrodynamics has dramatic implications for how flotation circuits should be controlled and optimized. Previous work has shown that choosing a frother of the right ‘strength’ is critical to the optimization process, and the work and discussion presented here serve to strengthen the argument. In addition, we know that collector chemistry will also influence hydrodynamic properties and needs to be taken into consideration. To achieve the desired outcome, the overall system of reagents and operating parameters must be considered. This paper describes and discusses some of the findings from recent research on frother and collector chemistry effects (on hydrodynamics), and how this knowledge can be used to improve flotation performance. Examples from plant experience are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFrothers perform various functions in flotation but the primary ones are control of bubble size in the pulp zone and stabilization of the froth zone. Laskowski (2003) was among the first to try to capture both roles in characterizing frothers in order to provide a basis for frother selection for a given duty, as well as to explore the link between function and frother chemistry (structure). The method he used requires bubble size data and a frothing index; the procedure has been simplified by Cappuccitti and Finch (2008) using gas hold-up to substitute for bubble size, and froth height (without overflow) as the froth stability metric. The gas hold-up/froth height relationship will be referred to as ‘hydrodynamic characterization’. Essentially, the gas hold-up parameter reflects the sum of the hydrodynamic conditions in the pulp phase (water in this case), i.e. the effect of bubble size plus the apparent impact of the water surrounding the bubble due to the frother (Finch, Nesset and Acuna, 2008). Similarly, the stable froth height parameter reflects the sum of hydrodynamic conditions in the froth, i.e. the effect of bubble size undergoing coalescence plus the influence of the water in the lamellae and Plateau borders between bubbles. It could be argued that the gas hold-up/froth height relationship is a superior one to simple bubble size/froth index for discerning differences in frother behaviour"

"This paper presents an overview of the major landslide hazards in open pit mines in China, the currently used landslide control and monitoring techniques, and development of a new slope control technique incorporating the reinforcement, sliding force monitoring, remote sensing and forecasting in one system in order to constrain the displacement of the sliding blocks in the landslide to minimized the influenced area and provide precise warnings timely for the imminent landslides. For implementation of the new technique, a novel rock cable with large deformation and high resistance (also known as HE cable) was developed, which can elongate as long as 2m. At the same time, the necessary and sufficient condition for initiating a landslide and energy balance equations are formulated. Based on the proposed mathematical models and Beidou satellite system, the software and data transmission hardware for remote sensing and forecasting were developed the new landslide control technique has been applied successfully in 245 landslide sites in 12 provinces across China. In this article, two practical application cases in the open pit mines are reported.INTRODUCTIONChina is one of the countries in the world with the most widely distributed landslides and suffering the heaviest damage. According to the incomplete statistics, landslide hazards have caused death of hundreds of people and direct economic losses of several hundred million RMB each year. The landslide hazards have a great impact on the life and property safety of the people, safety of the infrastructure, as well as the social stability. Thus development of new techniques for forecasting and prediction of the landslides is imperative and of great importance. In general, the forecasting and prediction of the landslides consists of three major aspects, i.e. sliding time forecasting, landslide activity intensity forecasting and landslide hazard degree forecasting. Since a considerable part of the landslide-suspected area are adjacent to the residential areas or important infrastructures, development of the advanced landslide control and monitoring techniques to cope with the sliding time forecasting problem is more important.Over the past one hundred years, the most widely used slope monitoring techniques are based on displacement monitoring (Xu, et al. 2007; Toshitaka, 1998). In the early days owing to the limitation of the technology and equipment, the ground surface displacement and underground water level change were inspected mainly by man power for inferring the possibility of a landslide. In recent several decades, more and more ground surface displacement monitoring devices were brought to the market, such as the automatic total station, theodolite, digital level, borehole inclinometer and GPS based instruments, etc. Based on these modern techniques, some advanced instruments have been developed and applied to the landslide monitoring, for example, the “landslides early warning monitoring system” (Leonardo, et al. 2002), the “In-SAR” technique (Reevea, et al. 2000), the GPS and satellite geodetic survey based technique (Reevea, et al. 2000), and real-time telemetry technology (Xu, et al. 2007). These monitoring approaches have made significant contributions to the landslide disaster monitoring and forecasting. The major limitations for the ground surface displacement monitoring techniques are lie in the inconsistence between the displacement in ground surface and that in the sliding surface for the sliding mass, resulting in low degree of forecasting accuracy."

"Economic returns for the copper industry have been assessed by building cash flow models for each of the 100 new mines brought into production over the past 20 years. Ninety-one of the 100 new mines returned the assumed 8% cost of capital and generated a positive net present value (NPV) at the development decision point. Economic criteria for individual mines are highly variable with NPV ranging from -$111 million (-$111M) to +$3850M (all money values are presented in United States dollars) and internal rate of return (IRR) ranging from -8% to +95%. The copper industry collectively would generate approximately $39 billion dollars in NPV through the development of the 100 new mines.The returns to exploration ($174M per deposit) were measured by deducting the cost of exploration per deposit ($221M) from the returns to development per deposit ($395M). Overall, the copper business has provided positive returns to exploration. However, the variability in returns across deposits means that only 41 of the 100 new mines can carry the average cost of exploration. The long lead times and high costs associated with exploration result in only those deposits with large amounts of contained copper being able to cover the average finding cost of the industry.The returns to development and exploration are shown to be highly sensitive to the cost of capital and metal price assumptions. With respect to deposit type, porphyry deposits are both larger (NPV) and exhibit lower profitability (IRR) than the nonporphyry deposits. On a geographic basis, returns to development and exploration are higher in Chile than elsewhere, reflecting the larger average deposit size and lower average exploration cost per deposit."

"Data will be produced from two uranium feasibility studies that were conducted in 2008, both involving uranium recovery from leached slurry by resin-in-pulp (RIP) with strong base resins. Excellent metallurgical results were produced in RIP pilot plants in both studies, and the loaded resins were eluted with strong sulphuric acid and recycled to RIP in an integrated process. Resin losses by either abrasion or mechanical breakage were immeasurably low.Metallurgical results from these two campaigns will be presented, along with an economic analysis of RIP versus the alternative process of CCD or filtration and solvent extraction.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of uranium directly from pulp with strong base resins in RIP contactors was practiced commercially in the USA in the 1960s, but the process never established itself as a viable alternative to solid/liquid separation and solvent extraction. This was due mainly to the necessity to do a sand-slime separation partially resulting from the unavailability of coarse resin beads, inadequacies in the design of the RIP contactors and screens to separate resin from pulp, as well as problems with the strength and durability of resins in agitated pulps.There have been significant advances in the last 30 years in each of these areas. All the commercial resin manufacturers are now producing very tough, durable, strong base resins, and are manufacturing them in a large bead size that is better suited to RIP applications. In addition, with the emergence and wide spread implementation of the carbon in pulp process in the gold industry in the 1980s, many innovative techniques for preparing leached slurries and separating carbon from pulp have become firmly established. These techniques have proven to be equally applicable to resin separation from pulps in RIP contactors."

At the 25th Annual B.C. Mine Reclamation Symposium in September 2001, Huckleberry Mines Limited received the Jake MacDonald Reclamation Award for its exemplary mine waste management plan, conceived to prevent the onset of acid mine drainage and facilitate reclamation of the site. The mine is an excellent example of a total mine waste management plan, with all materials scheduled in detail for the life of the mine. The filling plan for the waste management facility takes into consideration the requirement for permanently flooding the potentially acid generating rock. From an acid generation point of view, the tailings fall in the zone of potentially acid generating material. To avoid long-term ARD concerns, it is planned to float pyrite out of the tailings towards the end of the mine life, thereby generating a non-acid generating tailings stream which will be used to cap the deposited mine waste. The pyrite-rich tailings will be discharged into the deeper portion of the impoundment. On closure, a permanent water cover will be maintained over the mine waste. Only beaches of non-acid generating tailings will remain exposed. Mining will be phased to also allow one of the pits to provide storage for potentially acid generating rock and to be flooded at the end of mine life.

"This paper presents the result of the research done on the effect of temperature on the dilatancy of rocks from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC), where the South African Platinum mines are located. The BIC has higher virgin rock temperature (VRT) than the gold mines of the ‘Witwatersrand Basin Complex’. If the platinum mines advance to ultra-deep levels as the gold mines, since the Merensky Reef has been reported to extend beyond 5km, then the virgin rock temperature at 5 km below surface would be approximately 140oC. Hence, there is a need for the investigation of rock behaviour at high temperatures. Five different rock types (norite, leuconorite, mottled anorthosite, pyroxenite and chromitite) were tested in a 2600 kN servo-controlled multi-purpose triaxial testing machine. The tests were done at a constant strain rate of 5 x 10-1 S-1 and a confining pressure of 10 MPa within temperature range of 20 °C (ambient temperature) to 140 °C. The results show a general strength reduction and increasing dilation angles with increasing temperatures. The results also demonstrate that dilation angle is close to the internal friction angle at lower temperatures; however, they are greater at higher temperatures.INTRODUCTIONMany challenges are faced with increasing depth of mining in underground mines. The most obvious are heat, in-situ stresses and those associated with logistics. Issues related to underground heat have mainly focused on the side effect of heat on workers' health, increasing production costs as a result of higher cost of ventilation. The effect of increasing temperature with increasing depth on the behavior of rock has not been given much consideration. Generally, gold mines in South Africa are deeper than the platinum mines but the latter have higher temperature gradient, which makes the platinum mines to be warmer at similar mining depths. Although the study of the effect temperature on the behaviour of rock can be beneficial to both gold and platinum mines, the focus of the research is limited to the platinum mines because of their higher temperature gradient. Donoghue (2004) stated that the virgin rock temperatures (VRT) and air temperatures increase with depth, due to the geothermal gradient and auto-compression, that is, compression of air by its own weight."

"There are a number of challenges involved with the surface analyses of different mineral phases from process streams in a flotation facility. The first of course is to collect samples that are representative of the process and to ensure that they remain in a pristine condition prior to introduction into the instrument. In mineral processing, sample collection from the different streams is done on site and preservation involves simply removing oxygen from the sample by bubbling nitrogen or argon gas through the sample and snap freezing with dry ice.The second challenge in studying the surface chemistry of specific minerals is to find reliable methods of mineral phase recognition. In surface analysis of mineral particles confident mineral selection can be difficult with many multi-metal minerals (e.g. chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite) and with precipitated, adsorbed, reacted and contaminant species in the outermost molecular layers.In this paper we show that principal components analysis (PCA) of ToF-SIMS data provides improvement in phase recognition, particle selection and associated variations in surface species. We will demonstrate, with specific examples, that this technique can be utilized to differentiate surface chemical factors promoting (hydrophobic species) or inhibiting (hydrophilic species) flotation.Species recognition based on the PCA method in a study of Cu transfer between chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite mineral mixture clearly identified a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. A similar ToF-SIMS/PCA based study applied to concentrate and tails samples collected from the Inco Matte Concentrator demonstrated extensive CuOH and NiOH transfer between the chalcocite and heazlewoodite minerals. The statistical analysis has been able to confirm some mechanisms and deny others proposed to control recovery and selectivity giving more focus on the control factors.The ToF-SIMS PCA statistical analysis has elucidated differences in surface chemistries which illustrate the discriminating depressant action of adherent aluminosilicate (gangue) fine particles and adsorbed ions on the surface of sphalerite grains. In the flotation test concentrates, HIC conditioning resulted in the removal of these gangue fines thereby improving surface collector attachment efficiency, promoting a greater recovery of sphalerite."

"Mineral separation by exploiting the differences in mineral or metal specific gravities (sg) has been used since antiquity. In the modern era, this is most commonly seen in the recovery of gold by the use of centrifugal concentrators and the separation of coal (low sg) from waste rock (high sg) using heavy media cyclones and jigs. Other metals, notably oxides of tin and tungsten, are successfully recovered using some combination of jigs, spirals and shaking tables. However, many conventional gravity separation systems are limited to fairly coarse (>1 mm) to medium (>100 micron) particle separations due to the limitations of the gravitational separation forces in conventional equipment.Many of the high specific gravity minerals of interest are friable (e.g. cassiterite, wolframite, etc.) and excessive fines are generated in the grinding/comminution circuits which cannot be recovered with conventional equipment and may be lost directly to the tailings stream. Recent developments in centrifugal gravity separation equipment specifically designed for fine or ultra-fine particle separation and recovery have resulted in heavy mineral particle recoveries as fine as 10-20 microns. Ongoing research work has also identified the benefit of closed-circuit, multi-stage gravity recovery circuits using some combination of centrifugal concentrators and conventional equipment (tables, spirals, flotation, etc.) which can substantially increase overall plant recovery and final concentrate grade.This paper will provide details of the evolution of non-fluidized bed gravity concentrators for high sg mineral recoveries, correlate laboratory scale development work with plant results to confirm scale-up, and show how recent flowsheet developments have contributed to significantly improved plant performance.IntroductionGravity concentration is one of the oldest and most cost effective metal and/or mineral recovery systems, ranging from the classic hand panning of alluvial gold, through to the large scale production of a wide range of metals and minerals, including gold, silver, PGMs, black sands, coal and iron oxides. Conventional gravity recovery systems, comprised of some combination of sluices, spirals, jigs and shaking tables have limited application in fine particle (i.e. <100 microns) recovery, or where there are limited differences in particle specific gravities (sg), e.g. the separation of high sg, high value metal oxides (e.g. those of tin, tantalum or tungsten), from medium sg, lower value metal sulfides such as pyrite and pyrrhotite. These unit operations tend to have limited capacity, and while double and triple turn spirals and multi-deck tables have been developed, extensive floor space is often required in order to process the tonnages incorporated in the modern mineral processing plant."
