"The mining of iron ore in the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (KMA) region of the U.S.S.R. is done mostly by the open-cut method. An assembly of open pits capable of producing about 100 million tons of ore per year makes KMA the largest iron ore field in the world. Three gigantic open pits are currently in operation: Lebedinsky, Mikhailovsky and Stoilensky. These pits are as large as 13 km2 on the surface and as deep as 230 m. The mining operations are constantly faced with the problem of flooding from aquifers that overlie the orebodies; the magnitude of the problem is evident from the fact that the present groundwater inflow to these three pits is about 110 million mt /yr.Under such conditions, safe operations and pit wall stability are of great importance, and this has been accomplished very effectively by the appropriate use of seepage barriers and drainage systems. At KMA, the most important items used in the system of groundwater control are standard pumping wells, raise wells that drain into a 20 km to 30 km long underground drift located just outside the perimeter of the pit, horizontal wells driven through the pit walls, and horizontal drains. This paper describes the mining and engineering technology that have been developed at KMA to control the groundwater systems and protect the mines from flooding."

"The challenge of ""ore bodies getting steadily harder and lower in grade"" was brought to light during the first oil crisis in the 70's. Shortly afterwards, HPGRs appeared on the scene with the promise of saving energy. This combined with developments in wear protection for the rolls ushered in a period of trade-off studies that considered the HPGR as an option to improve project economics or to even make projects feasible at all.Since then, applications of HPGRs at Cerro Verde (Freeport), PTFI Grasberg (Freeport), Mogalakwena (Anglo Platinum), Tarkwa (Goldfields), Boddington (Newmont), Penasquito (Goldcorp), and others have contributed to the creation of a formidable basket of operating experience. Collected through years of successful operation, this information has been used to validate design criteria, scale-up factors and establishing a clearer picture of what ""to do"" and what ""not to do"".This paper compares results from various mining operations using HPGRs in their processing plants. Some of the lessons learnt in different operating environments are reviewed in order to support proper implementation and operation of HPGR's. Some of the development programs that have been initiated to improve wear life of the tyres and to reduce overall operating costs are reviewed. It is timely to summarize today’s experience and analyse its implications for existing and new operations"

"Abstract - This paper deals with industrial complexes such as: (1) a mine producing metal-bearing ore and a furnace(s)/converter(s) where the ore is melted into metal, either directly, or after a mineralurgical concentration; and (2) quarries producing the raw materials required for the manufacturing of cement and the kilns to which they are fed.Each mine or quarry operation results from the exploitation of a mineral deposit. This deposit is never homogeneous. The raw materials which are extracted from the mine/quarry can never be safely fed to a "process" such as a cement kiln or a metal smelter, because the devices involved lack the flexibility required to absorb a very inhomogeneous feed. Furnaces and kilns are known to be very sensitive, sometimes dangerously so, with regard to deviations from a certain ideal feed composition.The purpose of this paper is to present the conditions required to optimize the operation of such a complex, so as to maximize the production, the quality of the product, as well as the profit generated. Two key operations are involved: sampling (to know accurately the materials being dealt with) and bed-blending (to achieve the desired degree of homogeneity). The theories of sampling and bedblending have been developed by the author and presented in various books (Gy, 1992, 1998)."

A research effort has been undertaken, under WSIB sponsorship, to characterize the support capabilities of conventional and innovative spray-on lining materials for mitigating dynamic failure effects created by simulated rockbursts. Conventional spray support media, such as shotcrete and fibrecrete linings, and a variety of new spray-on lining materials (TSL?s), typically polymer-type thin coatings, were subjected to simulated rockburst influence. For baseline comparison, conventional rockbolt and boltand- mesh support products were also evaluated. Observation of lining performance was undertaken through completion of field scale support and rock detonation trials. Controlled blasting tests were conducted at the Queen?s University Explosives Laboratory to examine the effectiveness of the variety of surface coating agents for modifying dynamic rock spalling processes. All tests were performed upon largely undisturbed and homogeneous rock materials in highly repeatable fashion. Both conventional and innovative TSL-type surface lining materials were subjected to ?rockburst? exposure in rigorously-controlled blast trials. All blasts were observed seismically and photographically to provide detailed information concerning rock motion, surface fracturing, ejected fragment motion and support liner survivability characteristics. These material comparison trials were performed to assess the relative effectiveness of a wide range of currently-available area support techniques for suppressing hazards associated with dynamic rock ejection. The results of this study validates that thin, sprayon linings may be equally as effective, and often better, than conventional support materials at mitigating rockburst or like damage in highly stressed mine environments.

"Phosphorus slag is the most heavy-tonnage waste of yellow phosphorus production, which is stored in the dump fields for many years creating ecological problems in the regions. Despite of the actions taken to utilize the slags, most of them remain in the slag disposal area. One of the relevant and priority directions is rare-earth metals production (REMs), presence of which in the phosphorus slags allows considering the latter as an acceptable raw material source. Phosphorus slags contain about 30–40 wt% of silicon dioxide, therefore they can serve as a source of production of precipitated silicon dioxide highly required in different industries.The purpose of this work is the most complete REMs recovery in the solution while leaching and subsequent processing of siliceous cake. The work shows results of researches on establishment of the chemical and phase compositions of phosphorus slags, determination of the forms of presence therein of REMs compounds, processes of phosphorus slag leaching by nitric acid and processing of produced siliceous cake by NaOH solution.Based on the data of the instrumental and chemical methods of phosphorus slag analysis, it was established that it consists of pseudowollastonite a-CaSiO3 for 90–92%. It was found out that REMs are present in it in the form of carbonate apatite Ca10(PO4)6CO3 or rare earth apatite, and La2S3 compound inclusions.Optimum parameters of phosphorus slag leaching process were selected: HNO3 concentration 7- 7.5 mol/L; L/S ratio = 2.6–3 mL/g; temperature – 50–80o?; duration – 1 h; pulp stirring – 500 rpm. Recovery of SREMs, CaO, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 into the solution were achieved at 98.0, 99.1, 99.0 and 18.8%, respectively. Presence of 10 elements of the rare earths group in the phosphorus slag was established. It was found out that recovery of almost all REMs is within ~92–99%, except for Sc and Lu – ~39% and ~28%, respectively.For the purpose of optimization of siliceous cake leaching by NaOH solution, influence of some physical and chemical parameters was studied: N?O? concentration, L/S ratio, temperature, and duration. Results of the experimental data will serve as a basis for development of the technology of complex processing of the technological waste of phosphorus industry with production of REMs concentrate and precipitated silicon dioxide."

Batch grinding tests conducted on a gold ore indicated that gold is not randomly distributed within the size fractions of the ground ore. Since gold leaching performances were found to be dependent of the size of the gold carrying particles an integrated gold ore grinding-leaching simulator should incorporate a method to predict the gold size distribution of a ground ore. The paper describes the results obtained from batch grinding tests showing the non random distribution of gold within the size intervals of a ground ore and the initial developments of a grinding model to predict the gold size distribution in a batch grinding product.

Lonmin RoM ball mills are treating two types of feed ore produced by conventional mining and mechanised mining methods. It was reported that reduction in mill throughput was observed when treating the mechanised mining ore. Detailed grinding surveys were conducted for troubleshooting. Ore samples were collected for breakage characterisation using a JKRBT based on different particle density components. XRD analysis was conducted to investigate the association of minerals with density components. The plant surveys and the breakage characterisation tests all suggested that the two mining methods did not significantly affect either the ore breakage properties or the RoM mill performance. Instead, the mill discharge open area exerted a remarkable influence on mill throughput. The RoM ball mill operated at Lonmin K4 Concentrator has been proven to be a versatile mill that performed stably with variations in feed size distribution and feed ore changes by different mining techniques. The reasons are elucidated by the multi-component breakage characterisation and the plant surveys data.

"Current industry practice for HPGR assessment and sizing relies on conducting a series of tests using pilot-scale machines with roll diameters of 700 mm to 1000 mm. Substantial amounts of sample are required for such pilot test programs, typically 1 to 10 tonnes of the sample is needed depending on the level of study and complexity of the resource. Collection of large quantities of representative samples during the early stage development is challenging and expensive, thus significantly hinders the HPGR technology from being incorporated into early-stage designs. A robust and reliable laboratory test is therefore needed to allow a fair consideration of HPGR for early stage projects. With support from the Canadian Mineral Industry Research Organization (CAMIRO), the NBK Institute of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC) developed a suite of Piston Press bench-scale tests that correlated to pilot and full scale HPGR operating information (Davaanyam, 2015; Davaanyam et al, 2015; McClintock, 2018). The Piston Press Tests (PPTs) are capable of assessing the HPGR technology at the scoping, pre-economic analysis (PEA), and pre-feasibility (PFS) stages of project development. This paper will briefly describe the theory on which the PPTs are based, and then presents a case study conducted for a copper deposit to show how the PPTs are being used for scoping and pre-feasibility level studies. Specifically, the PPTs are being used to provide information for preliminary sizing and selection of an HPGR and to assess the effect of ore variability on HPGR performance. The results are also applied to developing HPGR circuit designs and can be incorporated in simulation so that optimum design parameters can be selected.INTRODUCTION It is widely accepted that high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) offer a viable energy-efficient solution for the modern comminution flowsheet design. Table 1 summarizes selected examples of HPGR applications in the hard rock mining industry. The main benefits of HPGRs are energy savings which leads to lower operating costs, and its stable operating characteristics that can better cope with variations in ore hardness when compared to the conventional SAG mill-based comminution circuits."

"NI 43-101 is a rule that governs how issuers disclose scientific and technical information about mineral projects to the public in Canada. The disclosure standards apply to oral statements as well as written documents and websites. NI 43-101 does not apply to disclosure concerning petroleum, natural gas, bituminous sands or shales, groundwater, or coal be methane. NI 43-101 first came into force on Feb. 1, 2001 and was revised in December 30, 2005. The results of laboratory, bench-scale and semi-commercial investigations of a method for adding surfactant (technical-grade lignosulphonate) to the process of pressure leaching of nickel-containing pyrrhotite concentrates have been discussed. Lt has been demonstrated that feeding of technical-grade lignosulphonate distributed along the length of an autoclave ensures a reduction in its requirement by a factor of 1.5 to 2 as compared with single-point feeding; it also results in a decrease by 5% in the unit requirement of metallized iron-bearing precipitator in the process of non-ferrous metals precipitation and reduces by 0.05 to 0.1% (abs.) the nickel and copper contents in the tailings of the given process. Technical solutions have been proposed for commercial introduction of the process.

Dust exposure resulting from the exploitation and winning of natural resources below ground has presented a serious health problem since the beginning of mining. The boom phase of the German hard coal mining industry after World War II with at times up to 500,000 employees saw an increase of dust exposure of miners below ground as the mechanization of road heading and mining increased significantly. More and more miners were diagnosed with coal-workers-pneumoconiosis (CWP), a chronic and irreversible lung disease resulting in a significant impairment of pulmonary function. This realization led to a reduction of CWP in the German hard coal mining industry in the 1960s. The successful fight against CWP began with the introduction of technical dust prevention measures. By infusing the coal seam with water before mining, sprinkling and spraying of heading and mining machines as well as canopies with water, aspiration in places with high amounts of dust and the suppression of dust with chemical substances it is possible to significantly reduce the miners? dust exposure. All operating points below ground are checked and measured regularly with regard to dust exposure. Through the combination of these values together with the individual shift data a relatively precise profile of individual dust exposure can be obtained. This profile allows the targeted work assignment when certain predetermined limits have been reached, moving the miner to a work place with less dust exposure and thus reducing the chronic dust exposure. The state of health of the individual is known because since about 60 years ago extensive occupational health checks have been carried out regularly at least every two years which means that work restrictions can be imposed depending on the findings. Since the beginning of the 1980s more value has been attached to not only situational but also behavioral prevention. Given the comprehensive provision of protective masks, having a protective effect as well as the required comfort when being worn, each miner has the opportunity to protect his respiratory organs depending on the specific dust exposure. Through a combination of all these measures the German hard coal mining industry has succeeded in beating the classic coal miner?s disease CWP. For mines in the Ruhr valley this means that a miner who started work after 1978 will no longer develop CWP.

"Abstract - Diamond-drill hole DDH-B357, located 1.5 km north of the Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb- Cu-Ag volcanic-sediment-hosted massive sulfide (VSHMS) deposit, intersects three exhalative horizons within variably altered felsic volcanic rocks of the Nepisiguit Falls and Flat Landing Brook formations. These three petrographically indistinguishable iron formation intervals (Fe2O3T = 21.4 wt.%) likely represent cogenetic hydrothermal sedimentary units because they display a common geochemical signature: Fe2O3T = 42.9 ± 10.5 wt.%, MnO = 5.4 ± 3.1 wt.%, elevated base metal values (Zn+Pb = 1999 ± 1091 ppm), strong enrichment in additional exhalative components (CaO = 5.3 ± 3.9 wt.%; P2O5 = 1.43 ± 1.00 wt.%), oxidized signature (Fe/Mn = 10 ± 6), as well as a common immobile element signature (Zr/TiO2 = 0.025 ± 0.007) representative of a pelagic source. The calc-alkaline to transitional host volcanic rocks can be discriminated by Zr/TiO2, and to a lesser extent by Th/Nb: Nepisiguit Falls Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.053 ± 0.004, Th/Nb = 1.08 ± 0.37; Flat Landing Brook Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.107 ± 0.043, Th/Nb = 0.86 ± 0.17. A symmetrical repetition of the footwall-iron formation-hanging wall stratigraphic sequence is observed in DDH-B357, with distinct felsic volcanic rock domains separated by the three iron formations. This is best explained by parasitic F2 folds on the west flank of the south-plunging Brunswick antiform, similar to the fold closures known to host massive sulfide accumulations in the Brunswick No. 6 and No. 12 mines. Iron formation geochemistry and felsic volcanic rock chemostratigraphy from drill core sampling can provide an effective mineral exploration tool for the structurally complex rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Sommaire - Le forage au diamant DDH-B357, situé à 1.5 km au nord du gisement de Sulfures Massifs à Encaissant Volcanique et Sédimentaire (SMEVS) de Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag Brunswick No. 6 recoupe trois horizons exhalatifs au sein des roches volcaniques felsiques diversement altérées des formations de Nepisiguit Falls et de Flat Landing Brook. Ces trois intervalles de formation de fer, impossibles à distinguer pétrographiquement les uns des autres, représentent vraisemblablement des unités sédimentaires hydrothermales cogénétiques sur la base de leur signature géochimique commune: Fe2O3T = 42.9 ± 10.5 % poids, MnO = 5.4 ± 3.1 % poids, des teneurs élevées en métaux usuels (Zn+Pb = 1999 ± 1091 ppm), un fort enrichissement en composantes exhalatives additionnelles (CaO = 5.3 ± 3.9 % poids; P2O5 = 1.43 ± 1.00 % poids), une signature oxydée (Fe/ Mn = 10 ± 6), ainsi qu’une signature d’éléments immobiles communs (Zr/TiO2 = 0.025 ± 0.007) indicative d’une source pélagique. Les roches volcaniques encaissantes calco-alcalines à transitionnelles peuvent êtres reconnues par leur rapport Zr/TiO2, et à un moindre degré par leur rapport Th/Nb: Formation de Nepisiguit Falls: Zr/TiO2 = 0.053 ± 0.004, Th/Nb = 1.08 ± 0.37; Formation de Flat Landing Brook: Zr/TiO2 = 0.107 ± 0.043, Th/Nb = 0.86 ± 0.17. Une répétition symétrique de la séquence stratigraphique Mur-Formation de Fer-Toit a été observée dans le forage DDH-B357, avec des domaines distincts constitués de roches volcaniques felsiques séparés par les trois formations de fer. La meilleure explication est que le flanc ouest de l’anticlinal Brunswick à plongée sud est affecté par des plis parasites F2, similaires aux zones de charnière contenant les sulfures massifs des mines Brunswick No. 6 et No. 12. La géochimie des formations de fer et la chimiostratigraphie des roches volcaniques felsiques en forage peuvent fournir un outil d’exploration minérale efficace dans les roches structuralement complexes du Camp Minier de Bathurst."

Productivity improvements in underground mining are becoming harder to find. Most mines quickly identify deficiencies in their processes and then struggle to make productivity gains beyond that plateau. One way to increase productivity in this situation is to modify existing methods of operation. Vale?s Stobie Mine has been in operation since the late 1800?s employing a variety of mining methods. Many mining advances have been incorporated over time. With the advent of mechanized rubber tired equipment, sublevel cave mining was introduced to allow economic extraction of a large low grade area. Additional productivity gains were seen in the sublevel cave area with the introduction of preloading production drill holes. In preloading, the holes are loaded with bulk emulsion ahead of the production cycle and then primed for blasting as needed. The introduction of preloading, although giving the Stobie sublevel cave process an overall productivity gain, saw an increase in oversize due to the collar priming technique employed. Handling oversize material prohibited the operators from handling additional units of optimally sized material. Prepriming, adding detonators at the toe and midcolumn of the production holes during the preloading process, was identified as a change that could reduce the formation of oversize. This paper describes the introduction of prepriming to the sublevel cave mining method and focuses on the process Stobie employees followed to ensure a safe transition to this productivity improvement.

Interaction between mattes having various compositions and solutions with a wide range of free acid and non-ferrous metals concentration have been studied in terms of chemistry, mechanism and kinetics. The solution acidity and oxidizers to reducers ratio in the matte-solution-gas phase system have been demonstrated to be the major factors determining the process behaviour. It was found that the types of copper and nickel secondary sulphides resulted from nonferrous metals precipitation from solution, depend on of the solution and initial matte composition. Based on these studies, technologies of matte leaching and nonferrous metal precipitation in the form of rich sulphide concentrates are developed.

The underground research presented in this paper was carried out in the two Polish copper mines: Rudna and Polkowice-Sieroszowice. The aim of the research was to determine stress field parameters. The measurement method and measuring positions are described as well as the measuring technique adapted to the geological and mining conditions of the Rudna mine and the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine. The identified values and directions of principal stresses and horizontal stresses and their importance for optimization of mining operation and safety improvement are discussed.

"The study of mechanical characteristics of rock discontinuities under different shear deformation velocities is an important premise of rock slope dynamic response analysis. According to disposing and calculating the experimental results of previous research about peak shear strength of rock discontinuities under different shear deformation velocity of constant normal loading, the law of influence of shear velocity on the total friction angle is studied. Based on the research results, it can be found that the total friction angle of rock joint specimens varies in the form of negative logarithm with the variation of shear deformation velocity. It’s also indicated that the total friction angle of rock joints decreases with the increase of shear deformation velocity for rock joints of relative strong homogeneity and isotropy. However, the total friction angle of rock joints increases with the increase of shear deformation velocity for rock joints of relative strong heterogeneity and anisotropy and the latter amplitude of increase is less than the former amplitude of decrease. The physical property and microscopic geometry of rock joints play an important effect on the increase or decrease tendency and amplitude variation of total friction angle with the increase of shear deformation velocity.INTRODUCTIONThe rock slope dynamic response is largely restricted by rock discontinuities. Hence the study of dynamic characteristics of rock discontinuities, especially the dynamic shear characteristics is an important premise of rock slope dynamic response analysis (Qi et al., 2007). Seismic load is both dynamic load and cyclic load (Liu et al., 2011). Under the dynamic and cyclic shearing actions of seismic load, the rock slope which is stable under the condition of static load may slide along the rock discontinuities whose shear strength reduce and then the earthquake landslides occur. The strength degradation and deformation mechanism of rock discontinuities under the dynamic and cyclic shearing actions is one of the key problems to be solved in the work of earthquake prevention and control of engineering slope. Based on the above understanding, predecessors conduct some researches which focus on the shear behavior mechanical characteristics of rock joints under cyclic shearing actions (Plesha, 1987; Hutson & Dowding, 1990; Jing et al., 1992, 1993; Huang et al., 1993; Qiu et al., 1993; Homand et al., 2001; Lee et al., 2001; Jafari et al., 2003; Liu et al., 2011, 2013). However, there are a few researches about the mechanical characteristics of rock joints under different shear deformation velocities because of the restriction of shear apparatus. Crawford and Curran (1981) conducted a series of one-way cyclic direct shear tests on four kinds of natural rock joints under different shear deformation velocities varying from 0 to 200 mm/s. The tests showed that at low normal stresses the peak shear strength of soft rock joints exhibited an increase up to a certain velocity, after which it remained essentially constant. For rock joints of intermediate hardness, the peak shear strength was essentially independent of shear deformation velocity; whereas for hard rock joints, the peak shear strength of which showed a significant variation with the shear deformation velocity. "Résumé - Les seules productions de columbo-tantalite en Côte d'Ivoire sont effectuées dans les éluvions, colluvions et alluvions d'Issia, au Centre-Ouest de la Côte d'Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n'a été accordée à l'étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l'évolution de ces granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent: le granite orienté à deux micas (type Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (type Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (type Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type-S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite de type Issia fut le dernier à se former.Les pegmatites liées au granite de type Issia ont été classées en quatre types : A- pegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et D- pegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV- zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartztourmaline. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d'altération métasomatique externe.La minéralisation de Ta, Nb, et Be est liée à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, la minéralisation de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n'importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite de type Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite de type Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite de type Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma. Les éléments rares sont restés dans le liquide résiduel jusqu'à ce que les conditions favorables à leur précipitation soient atteintes.L'établissement de ce lien génétique ouvre des voies pour des nouvelles stratégies d'exploration."

Published data on thermodynamics of tin in liquid copper, matte and slag have been reviewed, assessed and used in development of thermodynamic solution models of melts. The developed model/database was applied in modelling the Sn deportment in primary copper smelting and e-waste melting processes. The results show that Sn can be removed from the matte through evaporation of various volatile Sn species (with SnS the most volatile) and slagging during copper smelting. The Sn removal increased with increasing matte grade due to the increased gas and slag volume. In the e-waste smelting process, fluxing strategy was developed for smelting e waste to produce a slag with reasonable liquidus and viscosity. Modelling results show that very low amounts of Sn reported to the gas phase due to low S, hence low SnS partial pressure in the system. The black copper produced could contain a few percent of Sn depending on the oxygen potential. The Sn in the black copper could be removed to the slag phase during anode refining. INTRODUCTION Tin is an impurity element commonly found in copper ores, which will be dispersed into various solid, liquid, and gaseous streams during the pyrometallurgical processing of copper. Tin alloy is widely used in electronic soldering due to its low melting point. The growth in treatment of recycled e-waste through primary and secondary copper smelting has led to an increased tin input to the smelting system. Therefore, the deportment of tin between phases is of great interest to the operators of modern smelters. Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE) is a thermodynamic package developed by CSIRO for simulating reactions between phases in multi-component and multi-phase systems (Zhang et al., 2002). Over the years the capability of the MPE model has been extended to cover the behavior of a large number of elements in high temperature system (Chen, Zhang, Wright, & Jahanshahi, 2006). In the present paper, the thermodynamic data on tin in liquid copper, matte and slag have been reviewed, assessed and used in the development of a database for Sn slag, alloy and matte phases. The model/database was applied in modelling the tin deportment in primary copper smelting and e-waste smelting processes. The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of the chemical behaviours of tin in high-temperature copper processing and e-waste smelting.

"This paper proposes a biconcave shape bond model for the distinct element method (DEM) to simulate cementation between two circular particles in geomaterials. Rather than an original parallel bond model between particles, the proposed model adopts the more realistic shape of cementation and considers the elastic response of cementation under external loading. The stress field and force-displacement relationship of the biconcave shape bond is based on Dvorkin’s theory, and three modifications are adopted: (1) A superposition method is applied to improve the correctness and symmetry of the stress field, and it also provides a method of addressing the status when both connected particles rotate; (2) To simplify the input parameters, the tangential movement is replaced by the normal deformation and rotation between particles; (3) To accelerate the calculations, variables are extracted in analytical procedures, which provide an efficient method for applying the bond model with only one matrix inversion. With these three modifications, the new biconcave shape bond model is created.To assess the validity of the proposed model, this study compared the elastic deformation in a single bond with an elastic analysis performed using the finite element method (FEM). After verification of the proposed model, a series of sensitivity analyses was performed to explore the effect of bond shape and the differences from the parallel bond model. For a single bond, the results showed that a biconcave model can represent the mechanical behavior of a biconcave shape bond and is effective with different bond shapes. The stress fields calculated by the biconcave model were more similar to the FEM results than those obtained using Dvorkin’s theory. The width and thickness of a bond have a considerable effect on its stiffness, and the variation of thickness decreases with the width of the bond. In addition, the required parameters can be acquired directly from real bond material rather than using the back analysis procedure for parameters.The biconcave model was further implemented in DEM software Particle Flow Code 2 Dimension to certify its applicability in geotechnical engineering. Using this model, a series of uniaxial compression test simulations was performed to analyze the macroelastic responses of specimens. The results showed that the macrotangential elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio had a regular tendency, and they agreed with the stiffness variation in a microbond. This finding can assist in determining correlations between microand macroproperties and provides an innovative method for simulating the behavior of cemented granular material."
