With its new continental shelf beyond the exclusive economic zone, New Zealand is a country with just 4% of its territory above water. The other 96% is submerged. New Zealand's marine territory covers an area about three-quarters the size of Australia. This territory includes large portions of the Gondwana continent from which NZ separated more than 80 million years ago. This underwater land mass extends from the shores of New Zealand to a water depth of more than 5,000 m, is largely unexplored and is almost certainly the site of many large, untapped oil, gas and mineral deposits. Underwater oil and gas drilling is now a universal activity. Underwater mining is in its infancy and will become a major activity in the future, contributing greatly to the New Zealand economy. New hydrocarbon deposits will undoubtedly be discovered under the ocean floor in regions such as the Great South Basin located off Canterbury and Otago. Mineral deposits are also undoubtedly located within the oceanic crust of this underwater NZ continent. These are as yet unknown and unexplored. The oceanic crust north of the North Island is currently being extended through the subduction of the Pacific plate into the Tonga Kermadec trench and through the growth of a line of submarine volcanoes extending north to Tonga. Active submarine volcanism has led to the growth of ocean floor mineral deposits consisting of polymetallic sulphides with iron, copper, zinc and lesser gold, silver and other metals.

In the past marine mining technology has focused on bulk mining of base metals from polymetallic massive sulfides. This has not been very successful because of the relatively low unit value of these metals and other reasons such as water depth, etc.. The process of gold enrichment in hydrothermal deposits is controlled through five different factors: (1) nature and source of the solution, (2) source of the gold, (3) a mechanism for mobilizing and transporting, (4) a mechanism for deposition, and (5) a mechanism to preserve the deposit. Gold has been identified in marine polymetallic massive sulfides from various locations on the ocean floor (e.g., spreading centers, seamounts) with contents ranging up to 5 ppm Au. This is within the current range of 1.0 to 7.0 ppm gold content which classifies gold ores. The gold appears to have been derived during hydrothermal alteration of the oceanic crust. Until the present there has been little attention to the possibility of mining gold or other precious metals in the marine environment. However, the magnitude of hydrothermal alteration (seawater can penetrates to a depth of 5 km into the oceanic crust) and primary gold contents of the rocks in the pathway of the fluid indicates that major gold deposits must have formed on or in the ocean floor, but they have not been found. To find a big deposit might only take an exploration model exclusively designed for gold exploration on the ocean floor.

Ferromanganese (FeMn) crusts form by precipitation of iron and manganese oxides from seawater onto a rock substrate and are therefore considered hydrogenetic in origin. Diagenesis does occur however, through the process of phosphatization. During phosphatization, abundant dissolved phosphate in seawater replaces carbonate in the detrital fraction as well as directly precipitates within the FeMn matrix as carbonate fluorapatite (CFA). This process is likely accompanied by the partial dissolution or replacement of the oxide phases [1]. As a result of these diagenetic processes, trace elements adsorbed on the oxides are released and can either be depleted or enriched in the phosphatized FeMn crust layers. Pb, for example, has been shown in sequential leaching experiments to associate with the iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) phase in purely hydrogenetic layers, while >95% of Pb in phosphatized crust layers is found in the CFA fraction [2, 3]. However, previous sequential leaching studies analyzed bulk layers of phosphatized crusts and only a few crusts, from the Pacific Ocean. Here we present concentration data for Pb and other trace elements in the CFA fraction leached from thin stratigraphic intervals of the phosphatized portion of FeMn crusts from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans to confirm consistency of trace metal association with CFA both throughout the phosphatized section and in two ocean basins. The Pb and trace element concentration data from this study will also be compared with data from non-phosphatized crusts from the global ocean. We can then determine the effect of phosphatization on the concentration of Pb and other elements of greater economic interest in FeMn crusts, specifically whether there is overall enrichment, depletion, or possibly even phase transfer of each metal in the phosphatized layers.

Ancient volcanogenic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au massive sulfide ores commonly have associated with them along strike and in the immediate hanging wall a distinctive sediment that is thin, usually cherty and metal enriched, and generally referred to as an "exhalite horizon" or "tuffaceous exhalite". Typical examplks include the 13 Ma tetsusekiei of the Kuroko deposits of Japan (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1983, Econ. Geol.) and the 2700 Ma contact tuffs of Noranda, Canada (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1989, Can. J. Earth Sci.) and Key Tuffite of Mattagami, Canada (Liaghat and McLean, 1992, Explor. Min. Geol.). Attempts to use trace element distributions as lithogeochemical guides to ore have been largely unsuccessful. Exhalites have been considered to be the products of seafloor hydrothermal activity that is peripheral to the main ore-producing vents. However, large actively-forming polyrnetallic sulfide deposits at the Explorer mid-ocean basalt spreading ridge (1 850 m depth) in the NE Pacific and the eastern Manus back-arc dacitic spreading center (1650 m depth) in the western Pacific have demonstrated that the exhalite horizons are more likely produced by fallout of particulates from the main hydrothermal plume. In a typical hydrothermal plume, grains of >27 µm represent up to 97% of the mass (although only 2% of the population) of the particulates and are calculated by Stokes equations to fall from the plume to the seafloor within a few krn of their source. The particles are primarily composed of anhydrite, barite, amorphous silica, iron oxyhydroxides and metal sulfides and oxides. Plumes are subject to bottom currents which push them in preferred directions, just like smoke plumes in the atmosphere are subject to the vagaries of wind direction. Data and information for this study were collected in June-July 2009 onboard the RV Yuzhmorgeologiya in the area covers about 7000 km2 in the eastern part of the CCFZ between 10º05? - 10º55?N and 119º25? ? 121º08?W. In accordance with the IOM research program the cruise was intend to acquire both geological and environmental data and information necessary for delineation of nodule deposits and also data for identification of the baseline of benthic ecosystem. Having implementation of its 15-year plan of work for exploration under the contract with ISA, current activities of IOM were focused on nodule fields within prime areas that could be mined in the future. Bottom photographs obtained by towed deep-sea vehicle NEPTUN along 6 profiles with common length about 300 km (Fig. 1). In total, about 11,500 digital photographs (what cover approximately 40,000 m2 of the ocean floor) were analyzed for assessment of nodule coverage and investigation of megafauna (animals, visible in photographs, the dimension more than 2 cm). The giant single-cell organisms Xenophyophorida were the most multiple animals in seabed photographs. Their number on the site area averaged 1187 ind/ha. However, the vertical camera position does not allow counting all xenophyophorids, therefore their valid number is represented 10 times more. According to all available information these protozoans play the relevant role in assemblage of deep-water environment, giving for other animal groups an [ ] additional source of nutrition and a substratum for settlement and attachment. The ophiuroids are found in assemblage with xenophyophorids in many cases, standing on a sediment at their base.

Core sediment samples collected from the KODOS area of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone in the NE Equatorial Pacific were analyzed for chemical and mineralogical compositions to investigate the depth- and time-related variation of paleoenvironmental and paleoceanographic conditions during their deposition. These core sediments are divided into three layers from top to bottom by its color; 1) brown layer (Unit I), 2) pale brown layer (Unit II), and 3) black brown layer (Unit III). Geochronology of 10Be indicated the depositional age of Quaternary for Units I and II and of late Pliocene for Unit III with a potential short hiatus between them. Analyses of interelemental correlation identified three major groups of elemental groups that show moderate-to-strong correlations: 1) Al, Ti, K, and Fe representing for terrestrial alumino-silicate fraction of sediments, 2) Ca, P, REEs, Cu, and Zn for biogenic apatite, and 3) Mn, Ni, and Co for hydrogenous Mn-oxide. With an exception, Fe content was very high and showed fair correlations with Mn, Ni, and Co in Unit III. Unit III shows high smectite but low quartz and illite contents compared to the overlying two units, indicative of reduced supply of terrestrial materials. In a meanwhile, major elements (Fe2O3, CaO, P2O5), minor elements (Cu, Zn) and REEs are highly enriched in Unit III compared to the upper two units. All these elements other than Fe reflect the fraction of biogenic apatite, which indicates higher fraction of biogenic components in Unit III. This is also supported by higher amount of smectite formed by the consumption of siliceous biogenic components. The reduced supply of terrestrial material and/or increased productivity of surface water at the time of Unit III deposition are attributed to Pliocene warming preceding Northern-pole glaciation during Quaternary. Unit III also includes clinoptilolite and unidentified 8Å mineral, likely amphibole, that are absent in Units I and II, suggestive of the possibility of different source region and/or materials during Pliocene. Higher contents of Mn and Fe in Unit III are likely due to the high fraction of Mn-oxide that was formed by diagenetic process after deposition.

The Company Bauer Maschinen is very well known in the field of specialist foundation equipment. In the diaphragm wall market, we have experiences both in manufacturing and executing projects all over the world since 1984. We have a population of more than 300 units working all over the world in all climate and soil conditions. Especially for hard soil and rock conditions, we have developed several cutting tools and systems to optimize the performance, e. g. the “flipper tooth” Besides the execution of land based foundation projects, we have performed our firs offshore project with the trench cutter in 1994. Our task was to take samples out of the alluvial soil off the coast of Namibia in a water depth of max. 200 m. We converted a drill vessel and launched the cutter thru the moon pool. The samples had a cross section of 3,40 m² and a max. depth of 5 m. They were used to estimate the content of diamonds. The first time, we reached the seabed of the deep sea was together with our seafloor exploration rig MeBo, where we can take cores up to a length of 160 m in a maximum water depth of 4000 m. With our customer MARUM, we have done several expeditions since 2005. The last expedition took place in the Black Sea to explore gas hydrates.

To effectively manage the potential environmental impacts of deep-sea mining of manganese nodules, we need to know substantially more about the effects of sediment redeposition on abyssal communities and the time scales of recovery from such effects. As an initial step towards a predictive understanding of mining impacts on abyssal benthos, we are conducting a series of biological studies within the framework of the Benthic Impact Experiment (BIE). Mining operations will cause resuspension of sediments across extensive areas of the abyssal Pacific Ocean. The resultant plumes likely will produce redeposition layers, ranging from a few sediment grains in thickness to > 1 cm, over thousands of square kilometers of the seafloor. The impact of such redeposition on abyssal benthic communities is exceedingly difficult to predict. While there has been speculation that redeposition of 1 mm or less will exert deleterious effects, there has been very little testing, and the BIE will provide the first in situ test of redeposition impacts. In a series of cruises before and after controlled resedimentation, we are collecting biological samples to determine the undisturbed state of the ecosystem, the immediate effects of disturbance, and the time-course of recovery resulting from quantified levels of resedimentation.

Dredging tends to be either horizontal or vertical. In each case solids have to be disengaged from the deposit, mobilized, acquired and elevated or translated. One means of elevation is the airlift. Elevation and translation of essentially granular material nay be by jet pump or centrifugal pump. Any of the three types may be used on its own. The airlift and jet pump may he combined for vertical transport and the centrifugal and jet pumps for predominantly horizontal. Both suction point and pipework must have a means of deployment from the surface or from a submerged vehicle or merely a diver. An airlift is an energetic system, having a source of energy and a means of storing it. It therefore will be difficult to prevent oscillation -surging. A centrifugal pump has a characteristic that bends over at low flow rate and is therefore intrinsically unsuitable for pumping solids. The result is blockage, operation at high velocity and correspondingly high wear rates or operation at low concentration of solids and correspondingly low efficiency. The jet pump is intrinsically exceptionally stable but has a low hydraulic efficiency. The jet pump-airlift hybrid prevents or reduces surging and increases system efficiency away from the optimum depth for airlift operation. Delivered solids concentration is increased. The jet pump-centrifugal pump hybrid totally prevents pipeline blockages and increases the productivity from a given pipeline size. For a given energy input the average production is typically doubled. For example, the Indian River Delaware bypassing pipeline transmits an overall day-in-day-out average of 500t/h (tonnes) of sand down a 10.86" diameter line.

Recent technological breakthroughs in the fields of ceramics, medicine, aerospace engineering and electronics (semi- and superconductors) are constantly creating new uses and an ongoing increasing demand for a variety of rare valuable trace metals. These so-called high-tech elements such as hafnium (Hf), titanium (Ti,) niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), zirconium (Zr), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V) and the rare earth elements (REE), many of them of strategic importance, occur inter alia at elevated and potentially economic concentrations in marine ferromanganese nodules and ferromanganese crusts, making those deep sea deposits potential future resources of these metals. As these metals are mostly present in the lattice of the manganese and iron phases, which are strongly intergrown, rather than in separate mineral phases within the nodules and crusts (Koschinsky and Hein, 2003), reductive dissolution of the host phases is a prerequisite to release and dissolve the valuable metals. To evaluate the association of these rare valuable metals with their mineral carrier phases, sequential leaching experiments were carried out on selected samples in a first step in our project.

"Nine Fe-Mn nodules from the extensive nodule field in the east of Campbell Plateau of southwest Pacific Ocean beneath the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) and Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) were analyzed for the 10Be/9Be dating by AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectroscopy) at IGNS, New Zealand.Several types of nodule morphology were identified including distinctive discoidal forms with overgrowths resulting possibly from overcrowding and partial sediment burial. Five principal nodule facies were also recognized by location and occurrence (Fig. 1) (Wright et al., 2005). Fe-Mn nodules show various concentric internal growth textures, such as, cuspates, large parabolic cuspates, pseudo-columnar, columnar, globular, and laminated, which vary even in a nodule with hydrogenetic, early diagenetic, or mixed origin. Each texture shows micro-textural varieties and different mineralogy and/or chemistry. The genesis of each internal texture was indicated by the REE patterns, the mineralogy of Mnoxides, and the Mn/Fe ratios."

Ferromanganese crusts on the seamounts in the Pacific Ocean are potential resources of cobalt, nickel, platinum and REEs. Particularly, those of the Republic of Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) waters are believed to be of the highest resources potential area in the Pacific Ocean. The total six cruises using the Japanese Research Vessel Hakurei Maru No. 2 were carried out in the seamounts of the Marshall Islands in 1996, 1998 and 2002, and of the FSM in the 1997, 1998 and 2005 for evaluation of economic potential for cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts as part of the Japan-SOPAC joint project. During these cruises numerous data such as bathymetric, geological, geophysical and environmental data were obtained. Geophysical exploration with backscatter mapping and side scan sonar, visual imaging using towed TV camera and geological sampling using dredge bucket and/or benthic multi-coring system (BMS) were conducted on these seamounts. In this presentation, we will report the mode of distribution of the crusts and calculated resource estimation based on the results of these geological and geophysical shipboard survey and land-based analyses. The Manus Spreading Ridge is located within the EEZ of Papua New Guinea and lies in the Manus Basin ENE of the PNG Island and N of the Island New Britain. The divergent backarc spreading system is caused by the subduction of the Solomon plate in the South under the Bismarck plate in the North along the lineament of the New Britain trench. The rate of divergence is relatively high compared to other back arc spreading systems and amounts up to 12 cm/year [3]. Since submarine volcanism and associated hydrothermal circulation as important parts of the oceanic heat transfer system are also dependent on the rate of spreading, hydrothermal fluid venting and respective deposition of polymetallic sulfides can be expected there. In late 1985 first indications for hydrothermal activity were observed on a swell within the central rift valley of the Manus Spreading Centre during a photographic survey of the seafloor by an expedition of the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics with the American RV Moana Wave [1]. Detailed geological investigations including successful sampling were first carried out in June 1990 within the scope of the OLGA II research project (conducted by Prof. Tufar, Marburg) using the German RV Sonne equipped with a deep-sea television sledge and Tvcontrolled grab systems. Simultaneously a research cruise with the Russian RV Akademic Mstivlav Keldysh took place using the manned submersible Mir; the findings of the OLGA II cruise were immediately used for planning and organization of the Mir dives [3]. The massive sulphide samples which we used for our geochemical and mineralogical studies originate from the hydrothermal fields 1 and 2 and are from grab stations of the OLGA II expedition [4].

Results of the R/V Sonne Cruise (Edison) to the Tabar-Feni Arc from March 11 to April 5, 1994, a joint German-Canadian research cruise aboard the vessel R/V Sonne, undertook detailed mapping of the Tabar-Feni island chain, Papua New Guinea. The Tabar-Feni chain is host to several large porphyry stocks and epithermal gold deposits, including the giant Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir (minimum 19 million oz. Au). The principal objective of the cruise was to map the seafloor in the vicinity of recently active alkaline volcanic islands in the Tabar-Feni chain and to characterize the tectonic setting of large high-level porphyry and epithermal gold deposits in the region. Additional work was carried out on shallow-water hot springs associated with mineralized geothermal systems on the volcanic islands. Complete sets of 1:50,000 scale (20-m contour) maps of the seafloor were produced for each of the four island groups (Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar). The Lihir group was the most active and the most interesting. At least 4 (and probably 6 or 7), previously unknown volcanic cones were discovered within about 10 miles south of Lihir. The volcanoes are clearly very young and appear to have erupted along extensional faults produced by regional plate rotation. This recent volcanic activity appears to reflect recent forearc extension and represents the southward propagation of volcanic activity towards New Ireland. One volcanic cone at 1,490 m water depth is hydrothermally active, with very large areas of diffuse venting (100-200 m across), densely populated by beds of giant clams (probably calyptogena). Other vent-specific fauna are also present, including crabs, snails, sulfide worms, scale worms, limpettes, etc. The clam beds sit on a crust of hydrothermally baked and indurated, sulfidic, hyaloclastite-rich muds. The mineralization consists mainly of fine-grained disseminated pyrite and amorphous Fe-sulfides. A second, much larger cone at a depth of 1,070 m is capped by massive vesicular lavas which are intensely fractured and mineralized. A long history of gold production at Nome, Alaska has resulted in long term interest in the nearshore environment as a production target. Mining by Western Gold Exploration and Mining Company offshore of Nome yielded approximately 100,000 troy ounces of gold in the period 1986 through 1990. This study was designed to determine the relationship between heavy minerals, sediments, and gold concentrations which occur in the upper meter of sediment offshore of Nome. Standard procedures were implemented for grain size analysis, heavy mineral separations, and heavy mineral frequency determination.

The rapid advancement of green technologies in recent years is closely tied to an ever- increasing demand for raw materials. Innovative forms of zero-emission transportation and sustainable power generation will require a variety of traditional metals such as Ni and Co, but also many non-traditional metals (e.g., REY). Many of these elements are known to be highly enriched in deep-sea ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) nodules and crusts. However, unlocking these metals from their deposits through metal processing is – aside from deposit exploration and production – expected to be a critical component that will affect the overall economics of the marine mining value chain. Hence, research and development of tailored metal processing solutions which can target specific metals of interest in Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, is required. Dynamic mineral recrystallization (DMR) of Fe-Mn oxide phases is a geochemical process that may have notable potential for hydrometallurgical applications. We have recently demonstrated that Ni can effectively be cycled between deep-sea Fe-Mn nodules and crusts and solutions through dynamic mineral recrystallization. DMR occurs in nature as abiotic background process during biogeochemical Mn cycling when dissolved Mn(II) is in direct contact with Mn oxides. Trace metals which are incorporated in the Mn host phases, are cycled between solid phase and solution via coupled dissolution (trace metal release) – reprecipitation (trace metal incorporation) mechanisms.

The International Seabed Authority is currently considering regulations for prospecting and exploration for polymetallic sulphides and cobalt rich crusts. The deposits of these two types of minerals are very different from polymetallic nodules for which the Authority has already adopted regulations in 2000. The presentation will discuss the nature of the deposits, the inadequacy of information and data concerning these deposits and their environment, as well as the problems of defining the method of allocation and the size of the areas to be licensed for exploration, and those to be retained for exploitation; the current status of the draft regulations being considered by the Council of the Authority.

Earlier reconnaissance geological survey and recent mineral exploration by the Geological Survey of Japan (now part of AIST), Metal Mining Agency of Japan (now part of JOGMEC) have revealed that hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts are widespread over rock outcrops of the floor of the NW Pacific Ocean, south and east of the Japanese Islands, despite vigorous tectonic activity, such as subduction and backarc spreading. Deposition of ferromanganese oxides has occurred since at least the mid-Paleogene over the Philippine Sea Plate region and nearby.

Clark volcano is a large volcanic center on the active arc front of the intraoceanic Kermadec arc. It is one of the two southern-most Kermadec arc volcanoes (the other being Whakatane volcano) that sits on oceanic crust before the transition to continental New Zealand, and is underlain by the 17-km-thick Hikurangi Plateau, which is presently subducting beneath the southern section of the Kermadec arc. Unusual K-rich basaltic lavas have been recovered from Clark (1.5 to 2.25 wt.% K2O), together with more typical basaltic-andesite, andesite and dacite rocks. The total volume of the Clark volcanic center is ~90 km3, calculated from the summit of the volcano down to the 2,500 m contour (which marks the inflection point of the volcano flanks with the surrounding seafloor) and comprises two separate edifices similar in size; the northern one having a volume of ~4.57 km3 and the southern one 4.43 km3. The volcano has a maximum relief of ~1,645 m from the 2,500 m contour to the summit of the shallower northern edifice shoaling to 855 m below sea level. The northern edifice is comprised of twin peaks each consisting of a constructional cone, with evidence of sector collapse having occurred between the cones. A more recent, smaller cone again has grown on the eastern flank between these summit cones. Massive, blocky lavas and coarse talus dominate the summits of the cones, with finer-grained volcaniclastic material and sediments a feature of the volcano flanks. The southern edifice is noticeably more dissected than the northern one, having a pronounced horst in the centre of the volcano bounded by 5-6 km-long faults. There is no obvious constructional cone atop the southern volcanic edifice.

An analysis of noble metals (NM) in natural samples is most problematic. Determination of their traces in geochemical samples, in part, for the purpose of deposit evaluation, is a difficult analytical task. A number of international standard reference materials of rocks and ores, in which NM content is certified, is estimated at a half dozen. For example, in the International proficiency test for analytical geochemistry laboratories (GeoPT), which is held by the Department of Earth Sciences (The Open University, United Kingdom), the data for gold and platinum are observed very rarely, and the results obtained in different laboratories differ on 1-3 orders of magnitude. It is caused by low contents of NM in nature, by a variety of their complex and mineral species, as well as by a complicated matrix composition of platinum-containing objects. Among these objects are ferromanganese ores, enriched strongly with Fe, Mn, Ni, REEs - the elements hampering a precise determination of NM due to a complexity of instrumental inter-element correction. The absence of the reliable methods of NM determination in these ores drastically limits the possibility of deposit evaluation.
