This paper describes the procedure for analysis of toxic fumes from the detonation of high explosives using the Large Chamber at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC). This test is specified in 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 15.20 (g) as a requirement for the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) approval of an explosive as permissible for use in underground coal mines. The Large Chamber replaced the Bichel gauge and CrawshawJones (C-J) apparatus in the 1989 revision of these regulations. To determine the safety of an explosive in terms of toxic gas production, the Large Chamber Test attempts to simulate mine conditions and miners' exposure to toxic gases from explosives.

President George Bush signed the Safe Explosives Act (SEA), which amended the Organized Crime Control Act (OCCA) of 1970, into Law on November 24, 2002. As a result of this legislation, new restrictions on who could legally receive or possess explosives in the United States went into effect, resulting in a profound impact on the commercial explosives industry. The law went into effect in two key phases. The first phase, which went into effect on January 24, 2003, resulted in additions to the categories of persons who are prohibited from receiving or possessing explosive materials in the U.S.

During blasting, stress waves propagate through a rock mass, inducing stress and strain changes. This applied deformation affects intact rock, existing discontinuities, mine excavations, and engineered structures in the proximity of the blast. Traditionally in blasting, stress waves are quantified in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV) or peak particle acceleration (PPA), based on the method of measurement and the specified allowable tolerances. During analysis, the peak particle motion is coupled with an explosive source through various scaling laws to develop rock-specific attenuation relationships. Some studies have expanded this practice to the development of damage threshold values based on measured or predicted peak particle velocities. PPV-related thresholds are generally based on empirical models, where observation of overbreak, cracking, or fall-off are used to quantify damage. This method is often paired with the application of elastic plane wave equations to calculate the blast induced strain or the PPV threshold for tensile rock failure. Other factors that must be viewed critically in such models are the methods used to collect and analyse blast vibration data and the application of inappropriate vibration attenuation relationships.

"The Cumberland River in Harlan, Kentucky has flooded the town for numerous years. TheU.S. Army Corps of Engineers funded a project to divert the river. The project consisted oftunneling through a mountain to divert the river. The approaches to the tunnels requiredcontrolled blasting to create noses to help channel the water and debris into the tunnels.The geologic structure was such that conventional presplitting techniques were notproducing the desired results and were causing severe backbreak. Replacement of the rocknoses with concrete would cost about a million dollars; and therefore it was important tosave them if at all possible. Blasting techniques were developed which allowed the projectto be successfully completed. This paper will discuss the case history of the controlledblasting procedures."

The Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research & Development Program (SERDP) awarded funding for evaluation of procedures to mitigate peak pressures and energy flux density in the water column from ordnance being detonated on the ocean floor. The research purpose was to conduct scaled testing to resolve whether a theoretically-viable covering technology was operationally effective in reducing blast effects and the impacts of shrapnel. An additional objective was testing effectiveness of this method for hard-bottom units (rock or coral) and (unconsolidated) sediment substrate.

U.S. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation 8507 was published in 1980. In a comprehensive analysis of all known blast damage studies plus new definitive data, the USBM authors adopted new safe level criteria of 0.5 & 0.75 in/sec for the frequency range corresponding to structure resonances. These were 3 to 4 times lower than the existing limit of 2 in/sec and are the most restrictive scientifically-based blasting criteria for the prevention of threshold hairline cracks in homes. The Bureau's own tests involved 76 homes in six states. In USBM RI 8507, those tests were combined with data from nine other studies from the US, Canada, Czechoslovakia and Sweden in an overall conservative summary analysis intended to preclude blasting damage.

Number of mine accidents occurred in Indian surface mines are due to poor quality of explosives and blasting accessories. Amlori open cast project is one of the major coal producing projects in India. Standard drilling and blasting parameters are used to achieve desired productivity of the mine. 150 and 260 mm diameter blast holes are used for blasting in coal and overburden benches. Most of shovel benches are 12 to 16 m in height and dragline benches vary from 25 to 30 m. High-energy bulk emulsions are used for blasting. The cup density and velocity of detonation of bulk emulsion explosives are 1100 to 1200 kg/m3 and 3.8 to 4.5 km/s respectively. An incident occurred on fire bench of Amlori open cast mines during mucking of blasted muck.

Steam, explosives, electricity—the factors which have made the world in general, and America in particular, what it is today— were indispensable for the railroad and the steamboat, the factory and the mine, but the farmer’s work was generally run on a comparatively small scale, and was mostly done by the muscles of men or draft animals. Today, however, the farmer as well as the manufacturer, the contractor and the miner, fully appreciate the value of labor-saving devices. Every up-to date farm, large or small, has modem machinery that tends to reduce the cost of production or to improve farm products.

Through the 119 year history of the Homestake Mine various methods of raise mining have been used, these include conventional, bored, and drop raises. These raises provide passage for men and supplies, provide ventilation, transfer broken rock from level to level, and serve as emergency escapeways. As the 1980’s came to a close, many of the larger ore bodies in the mine had been mined out. This has resulted in many crown pillar situations that required a method to mine them. In addition, the Homestake ore body also contains numerous ore reserves that have short vertical height. The ore itself can be from vertical to 50 degrees in dip. Due to the high cost of drift and ramp development many of these ore bodies are subeconomic using conventional mechanized cut and fill mining.

A monitoring campaign to record dynamic pressures generated by detonation of a single blasthole was implemented at Barrick Gold´s Pueblo Viejo Open Pit mine (PVDC), located in the Dominican Republic. Pressure amplitudes beyond the dynamic compressive strength of the electronic detonator´s capsules have the potential to damage these electronic devices, generating misfires along with all the associated risks and entailed safety implications. In most instances, misfires generated from high dynamic pressures are a direct consequence of drilling deviations resulting in blasthole distances smaller than originally designed. Tourmaline Crystal Sensors specifically designed for high dynamic pressure measurements in aqueous media were selected to address the challenge. These sensors are custom-made and require additional instrumentation for proper operation, including signal conditioners and recording equipment capable of capturing simultaneous events, both in their amplitude and frequency components. Field-testing comprised detonation of a single blasthole using current explosive loading practices along with an arrangement of sensors positioned within water-filled drillholes in a spiral configuration. Distances, explosive weights and all 23 dynamic pressure record amplitudes are included along with additional data regarding arrival time and P-Wave velocity estimations. As with typical vibration models, the Scaled Distance concept (D/W1/2) was used to construct an attenuation model relating Dynamic Pressure as a function of Distance (D) and explosive Weight (W). The resulting model, adjusted to a 95% statistical confidence limit (covering 100% of the recorded data) was used to generate a series of curves (Abacus) estimating dynamic pressure as a function of distance for different explosive charges. These curves, in association with permissible pressure limits defined at 50% (FOS = 2) of the dynamic pressure strength reported by manufacturers for both, the 1000bar (Al) and the 1400bar (Cu) capsules; allow for the determination of critical (safe) distances between blastholes. Tests were implemented to cover a variety of field scenarios, accounting for different rock mass types, qualities and water conditions; however, preliminary analysis indicate the convenience of developing a unique trend that considers said variability. This approach allowed construction of a single, simple, unambiguous and operationally applicable design tool to address entailed safety issues.

Helwan limestone quarry is located at a distance of 35 km (21.7 miles) to the south of Cairo downtown. Drilling and blasting operations are used to extract the limestone for the Helwan Cement Company (HCC). In 1980’s a new urban community was constructed adjacent to the quarry. This situation led to shifting of the old quarry 5.0 km (3.1 miles) to its current location, to avoid causing blasting problems to the new community. Unfortunately, the new quarry is opened in a highly faulted area, with weak zones of brittle materials. The drilling and blasting crew is facing many difficulties due to the geological complexity along these zones. Moreover, the extension of this community towards the new quarry makes the control of ground vibrations is very important.

In part one we discussed a Chinese seismoscope allegedly invented and used in the year 136 (or 132, depending on the source). Interestingly, historical references to the measurement of earth movements then seem to be nonexistent until up into the 1700’s. There could be two explanations for this hiatus: first, that there were no earthquakes in the world for 1600 years, or, second, the “Dark Ages” really did exist, where intellectual inquiry and all sorts of learning came to a halt. Of course there were earthquakes, so the explanation for the lack of a record of invention is the reality of the Dark Ages. explained is the fact that the Dark Ages ended in about A.D. 1000, but that is beyond the scope of this story.

For many years there have been small scale tests available for evaluating the toxic fumes production by capsensitive explosives (DOT Class 1. l), but these could not be used with blasting agents due to the large charge sizes and heavy confinement required for proper detonation. Considering the extensive use of blasting agents in construction and mining, there is a need to determine the quantities of toxic ti,tmes generated by blasting agents. At the International Society of Explosive Engineers Twenty Third Annual Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique in 1997, the authors reported on a facility for detonating large (4.54 kg), confined blasting agent charges in a controlled volume that had been constructed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Pittsburgh Research Lab’s Experimental Mine. Since 1997, this facility has been used to collect data on toxic fumes produced by the detonation of various ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) mixtures and several cap-sensitive explosives. ANFO composition ranging from 1 to 10 percent (pet) tieI oil have been studied. As expected from previous studies, with an increase in fuel oil content the carbon monoxide production increases, while nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production decrease. The detonation velocity varies from 3,000 to 4,000 m/set for the 1 to 10 pet range of fuel oil content, suggesting that ANFO mixes with improper fuel oil content may appear to detonate properly, while their fume production differs significantly from optimum. The study also considers such factors as degree of confinement, water contamination, and aluminum content on blasting agent fume production. Results indicate that water contamination of the ANFO has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but causes significant increase in nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Decreasing confinement from Schedule 80 steel pipe to 0.4~mm thick sheet metal also has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but significantly increases nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Adding 5 and 10 pet aluminum to the ANFO had no clear effect on carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, or nitrogen dioxide production.

Blasting at a granite quarry in eastern Maryland produces elevated air blast readings that can fall into the cautionary zone for the state of Maryland environmental regulations on a semi-regular basis. When designing blast patterns in this quarry, challenging geology creates rough and uneven blast faces that can be difficult to capture with 2D laser profiling fully. Utilizing several methods known to manage high air blast results like pattern adjustments, decking, and timing changes have not achieved consistent outcomes. Accurately capturing and modeling this geology is the key to controlling high air blast. 3D modeling and profiling by drone is the solution to understanding accurate face profiles and real minimum burdens. Using 18 months of blasting data and air blast results to establish a baseline, the comparisons between blasts designed with 2D profiling and blasts designed with drone 3D profiling show improvement in air blast levels. Additionally, shots with completed drilling were drone profiled to understand precise amounts of burden for each borehole. This 'audit' of a blast allows for custom loading of explosives, accommodating the amount of burden present on the blast face. 3Dprofiling is not a new tool in the blasting industry, but a drone alleviates some of the restrictions ground systems face. Controlling and managing air blast, as it pertains to face burdens, requires an understanding of those burdens from all angles. A drone provides that distinct level of insight. The results of this study indicate that drone profiling is managing the customer's air blast readings, allowing the customer to maintain their license to operate within the community.

The N1 Porto tunnel project is a 650m segment of large-scale civil engineering plan to improve traffic flow between Porto’s downtown district, the Santo Antonio hospital district and the highway access. The tunnel is being excavated into a massive “Granito do Porto” granite structure, 4 – 20m below a highly urbanized environment of Porto, Portugal. The project was originally started in 2000 and was stopped due to the inability to mechanically excavate the granite rock. The city of Porto engineers then turned to traditional drilling and blasting techniques. The use of pyrotechnical delay detonators did not easily comply with the specified environmental and safety requirements concerning blast charging, firing and vibration control resulting in the process taking far too much time. The introduction of digital blasting was proposed to overcome these concerns.

In order to improve vibrations from quarry blasting, a new technique and timing pattern was established and applied to the particular geology. By shooting a single representative borehole one full second ahead of the production blast, a signature waveform can be isolated and analyzed. Multiple productionsignature blasts were performed. Encroaching residences require quarries to adjust their blasting techniques to reduce vibrations and raise frequencies. A signature hole inherently poses problems to quarries. Blasting one single hole from a production bench poses safety issues to wall stability; vibration issues to close neighbors; and budget issues to the quarry operator. Results showed that the new timing pattern reduced vibrations through timing optimization without a loss in quarry production. Therefore, this technique of vibration analysis employing a production-signature hole is successful in creating a timing pattern that meets the quarry’s goals.

This paper describes the circuit simulations based on SPICE of the SDI Electronic Detonator System at the system level. SDI is launching the Electronic Detonator System with a robust serial protocol exhibiting great ease in field usability and deployment. Programmable delay time with increment of 1 ms up to 10s is possible. Bus length of up to 2 km containing 1600 detonators can be utilized. This system was analyzed using SPICE simulations and an Excel-based firing model spreadsheet. The effects of wire diameter, resistivity, detonator leakage characteristics, blasting array topology (lumped, linearly distributed or branched) were simulated using the firing model. Such spreadsheet is instrumental in determining the blasting topology of any given detonator number and bus wire diameter or resistivity. Initial simulation results were interactively coupled back into making the serial protocol more robust during typical mining conditions.
