This project involved deep blast densification of recent volcanic avalanche debris deposits consisting of a 43 meter thickness of loose clean to slightly silty sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders deposited as a result of the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens, Washington, U.S.A. This project was carried out to enhance the resistance to liquefaction or dynamic settlement of soil deposits under the bridge abutments for construction of the 59.4 meter long South Coldwater Creek Bridge. As this bridge is located close to the Mt. St. Helens fault, it will in all likelihood be subject to earthquakes in the order of 6.5 with expected accelerations of 0.55g. Without soil densification, the bridge would suffer severe structural damage in the event of a significant earthquake.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been studying the problem of why explosives detonate weakly or misfire during blasting in underground coal mines. Cross-borehole shock wave interaction has been identified as a predominant mechanism causing explosives to function improperly (1)(Underline numbers in parenthesis refer to items in the list of references at the end of this report.). Cross-borehole shock wave interaction can be simulated in a laboratory setting, making possible the replication of tests in sufficient numbers to understand and quantify some of its effects on permissible explosives (2). The work presented here investigates the capacity of explosives to partially recover from the desensitizing influence of the shock wave. The recovery trend of different explosives can indicate optimum blasting patterns useful for minimizing borehole charge malfunctions.

Torpedoing Wells. – On the completion of the drilling, or when the production is found to decrease, it is usual to “torpedo” the well to increase the flow. This process was patented in 1862 by Colonel Roberts, who believed, with many others, that the oil was contained in crevices in the rock, which might not have been tapped by the bore-hole. He therefore proposed the use of nitroglycerine, gunpowder, or other explosive, to break up the rock at the bottom of the well, so that these rich “pockets” might be brought into communication with the well.

At the end of 2016, the Mine started a new ore phase in the section of the pit located on the East Wall. The East Wall geological structures required controlled blasting for peak particle velocity (PPV) frequency vibrations to protect the wall. Frequency controlled blasting using linear seed wave superposition modeling was required and implemented to reduce the far-field affects to the wall. This paper covers the work done by the drill and blast engineering group, controls used to protect the mine infrastructure, and the continuation of work-to-date of frequency controlled blasting for wall stability. The narrow width of the layback required the combination of hole sizes to blast large diameter production patterns with smaller diameter trim patterns in the same blast. A single blast had to use different burden & spacing and hole diameters and required the use of different timings throughout the pattern. Electronic detonators were required to limit blast vibrations and accommodate the specific timings needed to reduce low frequencies. The geotechnical group with the help of geotechnical radars worked with the drill and blast group on creating a tracking and reporting of blast performance. The radar readings informed the drill and blast engineers of the performance of the blast as it related to the long term performance of the highwall

"The EC-project ""Blasting Control"" with partners from France, Austria, Italy and Greece dealt with the development of a diagnosis system, which enables blasting experts to investigate in detail on probable reasons of poor blasting results in underground drifting. The system incorporates monitoring of geometric, explosive, vibration and granulometry data. All data are compiled in a database and are provided for direct retrievement by demand of the experts in a graphical environment. This paper focuses on the advantages of such graphical system for both research tasks and applications in real testing situations. It describes the procedure of monitoring and presents a selection of graphical outputs generated during data processing immediately after blasting. Benefits of detailed monitoring in respect of detecting sources of errors are explicated by a actual example of a test series in a mine. The paper will conclude with an outlook onto the scientificresearch work which is planned to be based on the results of hitherto investigations."

This study introduces the X-2Mill solution, a refined two-step methodology aimed at optimizing blast designs by aligning explosive energy with rock properties. The approach employs the X-4Traits Model, which uses drill-monitoring data from both autonomous and manual drilling modes to develop two critical indexes: the Drilling Rock Factor (DRF) and the Drilling SAG Power Index (DSPI). The DRF integrates the Size-Energy Fan Model with rock fragmentation results and blast design parameters, while the DSPI adjusts Specific SAG Energy (SESAG) based on Bond’s theory, incorporating ore X80 results, SAG mill capacity (TPH), and power draw to estimate milling difficulty. To enhance prediction accuracy, the X-2Mill solution incorporates, to a Principal Component Analysis of the normalized drilling data, a Meta Machine Learning model with a 3D spatial function, accounting for information from surrounding drill holes. This integration improves the precision of the DRF and DSPI estimates. The methodology unfolds in two main steps: Step 1: Bench-Scale Pattern Design, involves defining the target P80 size for ore based on the SESAG and the DSPI. It also establishes target X80 sizes for waste and oxide materials and iterates to determine the optimal Burden x Spacing (BxS) using the Size-Energy Fan Model and the DRF. Step 2: Blast-Scale Selective Explosive Density/Energy focuses on refining explosive density on a hole-by-hole basis to achieve the specified X80 values for ore, waste, and oxide materials. The X-2Mill Solution was developed at Minera Escondida Limitada (MEL) using data from 162,761 blastholes across 356 blasts conducted over three mine expansions. This solution addresses the challenges of blasting harder and more difficult rock, particularly in the lower levels of the mine. By adapting the blast pattern and explosive density to the specific rock properties and ore/waste designation, the X-2Mill Solution aims to achieve precise size distributions and improve overall blasting performance. The results demonstrate that the X-2Mill Solution balances ore fragmentation to meet SAG mill throughput requirements while optimizing powder factor costs for waste material and maintaining digging efficiency. By efficiently distributing explosive energy, the solution not only enhances throughput but also improves blasting efficiency while ensuring stable slopes and minimizing fault activation.

Blaster training manuals used by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) and others are outdated and cumbersome. A new approach has been developed using Microsoft PowerPoint with a Visual Basic overlay to produce modules on CD’s that present state of the art blasting techniques. The education modules contain enhanced information on topics such as explosives and initiation products, blast design, drilling, and vibration control. The content is based on safe practices and illustrated with numerous photographs and movies. Review questions, complete with explanations for incomplete answers, enhance the learning process and keep the blaster involved. The benefits of using an electronic format include the ability to continually change and update the training modules as new products, technology and applications become available. In addition, the blaster can work at home in preparation for class work and may reduce the time away from the job. This poster session presentation will allow potential users to view and take part in the evaluation of these modules.

All flyrock incidents have the potential to result in injuries or fatalities that can result in loss of company reputation, license to operate with clients, and bear the exposure to high cost liability. From 2007 to 2009, one NA Quarry and Construction Business experienced a series of flyrock incidents. In the Spring of 2009, this business declared that the frequency and severity of Flyrock Incidents had reached an unacceptable level. A Flyrock Elimination Program was launched.

The work principle from thermodynamics is used to model the shock and heave for explosives shot in rock or under water, with the latter compared to reported results. The work principle utilizes restrictions and constraints to yield a representative fit to the irreversible (natural) shooting process. The reduction of the internal energy of the reaction-zone yields the total expansion work (TXW), the resultant sum of the rock/water shock and heave. The restoration technique of forming a closed thermodynamic loop yields the reversible mechanical work (RMW) or the rock/water heave. The residual work that remains when RMW is subtracted from TXW yields the irreversible disorder work (IDW) or the un-dissipated (without loss) shock in the surrounding rock or water. The work principle renders an unequivocal relationship for the shock-loss factor, rather than the traditional roundabout formula for correcting the underwater gauge-shock of un-modeled explosives. There’s a novel heave-ratio factor that unquestionably rates the fit of results under comparison. Rock-shots are more complex in nature than underwater shots due to rock fracture and stratum rupture, though numerical resolution is worthwhile. The proposed rock-water-jelly (RWJ) model yields rough estimates, with rock-type results not wholly different from their underwater counterparts. Though reported underwater shots reveal shock and heave trends with respect to charge formulation ingredients, there are no such rock-shot results for comparison, since the relevant test measurements in rock remain difficult, if not intractable.

Conventional detonators and blasting caps make use, as igniters, of flame-shock-, andfriction-sensitive primary explosives, such as lead azide, lead styphnate, mercury fulminate, etc, most of them severe toxic and environmental contaminants. Sensitivity of primary explosives is one of the main causes of injuries and fatalities in explosives industry and in field applications. Intense research for a reliable, safe, and environmental-friendly non-primary-explosives detonator was conducted by the industry in the last years. A new detonator is presented, containing no primary explosive, employing only environmental-friendly substances while keeping reliability of performance. A series of performance tests is executed in prototypes of different output energies, including initiation by flame, shock tube, thermo tube (IBQ’s proprietary spark-generating tube, presented at 2005 ISEE Conference), energy transfer reliability, and extreme environmental conditions (according to MIL-STD 331B, test C1 standards). Results are compared, when pertinent, with standard blasting caps of different energy outputs, and with standard primary explosives.

The concept of optimum fragmentation in surface mining operations, i.e. the degree of fragmentation to which corresponds the lowest overall associated costs of drilling, blasting, loading, haulage and crushing, was developed more than thirty years ago. Recent field investigations using novel technologies, which have been completed by ICI Explosives Canada and by others, indicate that this ultimate goal of optimum fragmentation is closer to becoming reality.

Several surface coal mining operations in North America are attempting to adapt microprocessor-based monitoring equipment as well as programmable logic controllers onto rotary blasthole drills, towards improving overall drill and blast productivity. These Monitoring While Drilling (MUD) systems permit the recording and processing of important drilling parameters such as rotary speed and torque, instantaneous penetration rate and weight on the bit, and enable the operator ultimately to optimize drill and bit performance. MWD systems on production drills in surface coal mines offer the potential to define mine bench geology in detail and in advance of explosives loading. Recent advance s in explosives and initiation technology will require such a detailed knowledge of ground conditions in order to be fully exploited. Additionally, the logic developed from drill monitoring technology will eventually enable full drill automation through feedback and control, once a more complete understanding of the influences of rock mass characteristics on machine performance is achieved.

Corrugated boxes have been the dominant shipping container for packaged commercial explosives for the past 3 decades. Recent changes in shipping regulations have dictated to the industry the adoption of enhanced standards dealing with the construction of fiberboard shipping containers for explosives. Effective October 1944, all shipping containers used for explosives will require individual certification verifying that the containers conform to the United Nations performance oriented packaging standards. The U.S. Department of Transportation will continue to enforce compliance to the new UN standards. A renewed emphasis on the design of corrugated shipping containers to insure industry compliance to the UN standards has been a joint development program between the explosive manufacturers, fiberboard container suppliers and the academic community. Along with drop strength, leakproofness, and vibration resistance, the individual stacking strength of corrugated shipping containers has come under tight scrutiny based on the new UN standards.

Periodically, the Institute of Makers of Explosives Safety Library Publications are reviewed, edited and updated to reflect recent technical developments, new commercial explosive products and new regulatory requirements. The rapid proliferation of electronic devices, particularly portable communication systems, inventory management devices, navigational aids, etc., required the revision of the IME Safety Library Publication 20, “Safety Guide for the Prevention of Radio Frequency Radiation Hazards in the Use of Commercial Electric Detonators”. The new edition of SLP-20 has been updated to correct alterations to U.S. frequency allocations and maximum transmitted power permitted and a discussion of communications and tracking systems required in underground mining by the Miner Act. Also, an entire section was added dedicated to safe distances from RF sources to the special type of resistorized electric detonators used in the upstream oil and gas industry on wellsites and an enlarged section describing the particular types of RF sources that the blaster may encounter, perhaps in construction blasting operations.

The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) led a post-detonation debris collection project in conjunction with a large AN railcar detonation conducted by the Department of Homeland SecurityTransportation Security Administration, Department of Defense-Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office, Sandia National Laboratories, and the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Grounds. This important work will aid in underpinning algorithms used in the IMESAFR (Institute of Makers of Explosives Safety Analysis for Risk) Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) tool. The test also provided valuable data about AN detonation characteristics when it is driven to detonation. The test took place at the Utah Dugway Proving Grounds (DPG) on April 27, 2018 and the debris collection was conducted the following two weeks with an average of 20 persons per day and an approximate total of 1,400 manhours. This paper details the collection efforts, challenges, and lessons learned. It also presents some of the initial findings relating to the debris distribution.

Our modern technology is provided with a unique but flexible power tool in the use of explosives. A by-product of explosives usage is vibration or elastic deformation of the earth which is annoying to the ordinary person and can be damaging to structures. The problem is not new, it is more than fifty years old. Adequate vibration standards have been developed so that blasting programs can be properly planned and safely executed. Changes in our social culture have somewhat changed the emphasis in blasting vibration from damage considerations to the much lower level of citizen annoyance. Vibration codes based on this level will be highly restrictive and prohibitively costly. Cooperation is urged between operators, community officials, agencies at all levels,and consultants to see to the development of sound realistic vibration codes.
