Over 80 pct of domestic phosphate rock, which is the starting material for phosphorus-containing fertilizers, comes from central Florida deposits. As K-her grade deposits are depleted, lower grade phosphate ores containing 'Mg0 in the form of dolomite are encountered. Treating high MgO ores with present beneficiation technology will not yield a concentrate meeting specifications for acidulation. The Bureau of Mines conducted research on three high-MgO phosphate samples from south Florida. The sales contained, in percent, 5.4 to 10.2 P205, 1.9 to 7.6 MgO, and 35.3 to 60.1 acid insolubles. A technique of sizing, grinding, desliming, scrubbing, and redesliming was used to produce a feed suitable for continuous flotation studies, A conventional fatty acid-fuel oil rougher flotation followed by two to three cleaner stages resulted in concentrates containing, in percent, 30.7 to 31.3 P205, 0.6 to 1.3 MgO, and 2.5 to 4.8 acid insolubles. The P205 recovery from the flotation feed ranged from 55.1 to 89.7 pct.

Determine the appropriate spacing and alarm levels for carbon monoxide and smoke sensors used for fire detection in underground coal mine conveyor belt entries. Background Fire represents one of the most severe hazards in underground coal mines. Early-warning fire detection in underground coal mines is essential to successfully implement and execute evacuation and control measures. Both carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors have the ability to provide reliable early-warning capability, provided that they are spaced properly and set at the appropriate alarm levels. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a series of large-scale experiments where a small coal fire was used to ignite a conveyor belt at air velocities of 0.76 to 6.1 m/s. The test configuration was purposely designed to model a worst-case fire scenario for fires that develop within conveyor belt entries in underground coal mines. During the tests, CO and smoke levels were continuously measured to determine alarm times and alarm levels as the fire intensity progressed. The data from these tests indicated that for a given sensor spacing, the time to reach a preset alarm threshold depends upon the belt entry air velocity and cross-sectional area. Analysis of this data resulted in the equations and nomographs for CO and smoke sensor spacing, and alarm levels contained in Bureau of Mines RI 9380, "Fire Detection for Conveyor Belt Entries."

This paper is the third of a series recording the results of tests made at various quarries throughout the United States to determine (1) the relation between the size gradation of feed to, and product from, primary crushers, (2) the particle shape of the crushed. product, (3) the differences in gradation and particle shape produced by different types of primary crushers, and (4) the differences in gradation and particle shape caused by crushing different kinds of stone. Progress reports 1 and 2 dealt with comparisons of different types of crushers crushing the same type of stone. This report deals with relation¬ship between feed and product of two different limestones, as to size distribution and particle shape, when crashed in the same crusher.

This paper discusses the application of digital human models (DHM) to examine computer generated forces necessary to move specific joysticks by using roof bolter virtual operators to predict the forces experienced on the operator’s upper extremities. Using DHM and simulations of static movements, investigators analyzed predictions of joint moment and joint force effects on virtual operator’s right wrist, elbow and shoulder and compared them to different body dimensions and work postures. This study exemplifies the ease of estimating upper extremity loads on equipment operators using virtual operators and computer models of equipment and work environment. As expected, comparing results of percentage of joint force and moment reduction using the electronic control and of the mechanical control showed that the electronic control had lower joint forces and joint moments over the mechanical control. The average predicted value of the joint moment on the wrist was 1.84 Nm, elbow 7.85 Nm and shoulder 14.55 Nm and of the joint force on the wrist was 5.06 N, elbow 4.56 N, and shoulder 3.67 N. Because the data illustrates low-level forces to move a joystick, inadvertent actuation of the control is addressed. Regardless of the findings, research is still needed on joysticks in real world situations such as an epidemiological assessment of equipment operators in the field before final recommendations and conclusions can be drawn.

Coal-bearing beds underlie 23,000 square miles, about one third of Missouri's total area. Twelve out of more than twenty named coal seams have been or are being commercially mined. The remainder are too thin for commercial production. The coal is high volatile bituminous, with reserves estimated to be six billion tons, 1.24percent of U.S. coal reserves. Coal-bearing strata are generally thin seams which can be up to five feet thick. Typically, mined seams are about 28 inches thick. Coal deposits were first mined in Missouri in the 1840s, with the coal used primarily for domestic heating and blacksmithing. Production increased with the introduction of steamboats on the Mississippi. Coal production in 19 17 was six million tons. Production has steadily declined from a high of nearly seven million tons in 1984 to 2.3 million tons in 1991. Declining production is the result of several factors, including competition from other energy sources and the high sulfur content of Missouri coal. Today, coal-fired electric generating plants are the biggest consumers of Missouri coal. The Missouri regulatory program was conditionally approved November 21,1980, and fully approved January 17,1983. Its Abandoned Mine Land program was approved January 29, 1982.

The available supply of fuel and power is a subject of importance at all times and particularly at this time. The following brief survey of fuel and power in the United States appraises the extent of the several primary sources of energy the approximate monthly demand, 1929-40; the chief centers of production and consumption; and shifts in the principal uses from 1929 to recent years. The period covers the boom year 1929, the years of the great depression, the more normal year 1937, the recession in 1938, the year 1939, and 1940 (which was affected by armament programs). In some instances, the data for 1939 and 1940 are preliminary. The four primary sources of fuel and power are coal, petroleum, natural gas, and water power. Wood fuel, important in some regions, and foreign trade in natural gas and hydroelectricity represent a relatively small part of the energy supply and are not considered in this study. The tonnages shown are in terms of coal, based upon the calorific or B. t. u. equivalents of the several sources of power. In practice, the usable heat or energy varies according to the type of equipment available for its use. For example, the efficiency of turbine water wheels and internal-combustion engines is much higher than that of steam plants and household-heating devices.

"INTRODUCTION During the last war, considerable attention was given to the search for materials or combinations of materials for use as expelling agents for aerosols in the well-known ""aerosol bomb."" These materials must be free of fire and explosion hazards under normal conditions of use.In cooperation with the Department of Agriculture and other Federal agencies interested in the work, the Bureau of Mines carried out a laboratory investigation on the inflammability of- dimethyl ether-dichlorodifluoromethane air mixtures. 4/The method of investigation was essentially the same as that used in a similar investigation dealing with the inflammability of propane-butane-dichlorodifluoromethane mixtures. 4/SOURCE OF MATERIALSThe dichlorodifluoromethane (commonly known as freon-12) and the dimethyl ether were supplied by Dr. Lyle D. Goodhue., U. S. Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Md. It was reported that the freon-12 was manufactured by the Kinetic Chemical Co. Wilmington, Del., and the dimethyl ether by the Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corp., Charleston, W. Va..The materials were obtained in small metal cylinders and were used as received. Before using, the cylinders mere placed in an upright position, and 5 to 6 liters of the gas was released from each cylinder to the atmosphere to remove any trapped air that may have been introduced when the cylinders were filled."

Depletion of coals most suitable for metallurgical fuel has nude necessary a general survey of coking-coal reserves in the United States. These investigations were begun in 1948 at the joint request of the Munitions Board, Department of Defense, and a number of coal companies. This report, which is one of a series, by counties, describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Letcher County, Icy. From these data it is possible to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke, (b) which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced, and, (c) which coals cannot be upgraded by known commercial preparation methods to metallurgical fuel standards now accepted.

Chromite deposits in the vicinity of Louise, Troup County, Ga., were studied y the Bureau of Mines from September 1, 1942, to March, 15, 1943. They are about three-fourths of a mile southeast of Louise and 8 miles northeast of La Grange, Troup County, Ga. The existence of chromite deposits in that area has been known for more than 75 years, but no active prospecting was done until World War I. Prospecting continued intermittently' until 1928. The Bureau became interested in the deposits in connection with its strategic minerals investigations during World War II. The chromite in these deposits occurs as grains ranging from "pin-head" size to 3/8-inch and occasionally 1 inch. Some of the material is magnetic, indicating the presence of magnetite. Of the 300 samples taken during the course of the project, 266 were analyzed. Tables showing the analyses accompany this report.

Large-scale tests in the U.S. Bureau of Mines Experimental Coal Mine show that the explosion hazard of coal dust on shuttle-car roadways can be con-trolled by proper application of water, dry rock dust, a saturated solution of ammonium phosphate, or mixtures of water or the water-phosphate solution with rock dust. The experiments were made with loadings of 1.0 and 5.0 pounds of mine size coal dust per linear foot of entry, and with a 3-or 4-inch-thick layer of coal rubble on the floor, The data from the tests with mine-size coal and rubble are comparable. The water contents of the dust loading were determined from samples collected just prior to initiation of a gas-air mixture in an ignition zone at the face Dust samples were collected 1 inch deep from the coal-rubble deposit. One experiment was made with the dust in the coal rubble bound with latex applied as a water solution by spray. The binding action was inadequate and explosion propagation was obtained.

The Bureau of Mines has examined selected deposits of titanium minerals throughout the United States. The titaniferous magnetite deposits in the western San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, Calif., were among those selected for study, and in 1956-58 field work was conducted to determine the extent and character of the titaniferous magnetite deposits occurring in the area. This report describes this work and summarizes earlier work in the area by the Bureau and others. The titaniferous magnetite occurs disseminated as seams and lenticular pods in an anorthosite belt 4 to 6 miles wide that trends about. N. 80° W., extending from sec. 13, T. 3 N., R. 12 W., to the west boundary of R. 14 W., at which point the titaniferous magnetite-bearing rocks disappear beneath the sediments in the Santa Clara River Valley.

Past experience has shown that the penetration characteristics of the 10-mm nylon cyclone used on approved personal sampling equipment are significantly different from those determined in the laboratory using a nonpulsating flow source. The Bureau of Mines has developed and recommended a modification to presently approved equipment that will alleviate this difference. However, as a result of this modification, a new relationship for converting respirable dust concentrations measured with approved personal sampling equipment to equivalent concentrations as measured with an MRE instrument will have to be established. This Bureau of Mines report describes the underground sampling program conducted to establish a new factor for converting respirable dust concentrations measured with personal sampling equipment, modified with a recommended pulsation damping device, to an equivalent concentration as measured with an MRE gravimetric dust sampler.

In continuation of the study of thermodynamic properties of the common interoxidic compounds of ferroalloy elements, this report gives the results of low-termperature heat-capacity measurements and entropy evaluations of the monotungstates of sodium, magnesium, and calcium. Previous reports4 5/ of this laboratory dealt with low-temperature heat capacities, entropies, and heats of formation of the sodium vanadates. Heat-capacity measurements of the monotungstates of sodium, magnesium, and calcium (Na2W04, MgW04, and CaW04) were conducted throughout the temperature range 51° to 298° K. The entropies at 298° K. were evaluated and then combined with entropy data for the elements and oxides to obtain entropies of formation. This information is an essential part of the data needed for thermodynamic appraisals of chemical reactions of these substances. No similar data for any tungstate are to be found in the literature.

The power required to circulate a gas-solids suspension was determined using a centrifugal compressor and a closed system. The suspension consisted of 18- to 40-micron glass beads in a mixture of 89 percent N2 and 11 percent CO2 at 20 psig. Solids-to-gas (S/G) ratios w re O to 2.2 lb/lb; gas flow rates were l.2 to 2.5 lb/min. Power requirement was found to follow the relationship hp t = hp(. + l), where hp t = the total power, and hpg = the power required for pure gas.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated a quartz schist formation within the Blue Joint Wilderness Study Area which was identified as having a "high potential" for copper-silver-cobalt-barium resources. Stratiform and remobilized copper occurs near, and bedded barite within, the study area. In addition, the black to gray Proterozoic quartz schist may correlate with the Yellowjacket Formation which contains cobalt-copper-gold-silver deposits at Blackbird, ID, about 30 miles to the south. Eighty soil and 43 rock samples collected across the quartz schist formation were analyzed for gold, silver, copper, cobalt, and barium. During the reconnaissance and sampling, particular attention was given to looking for malachite (copper carbonate) and erythrite (cobalt arsenate, also known as "cobalt bloom"). The sample analyses and geology in this localized area do not provide enough evidence to support the "high potential" designation for copper-silver-cobalt resources. Barium potential still appears high, however.

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. "INTRODUCTION It is a recognized fact that in the coal-mining industry coal dust must be allayed to promote the safety and health of underground workers. The Bureau of Mines has been cognizant of the hazards of coal dust for many years, and the necessity of controlling such dust was acknowledged when the Federal Mine Safety Code was formulated. Accumulations of coal dust increase the explosion hazard in a bituminous-coal mine and facilitate the propagation of an explosion. Some of the coal dust produced in mining is inhaled by the workers and contributes to respiratory infection. Impairment of vision and personal discomfort resulting from working in dense clouds of coal dust reflect unfavorably on the efficiency of workmen. Considerable coal dust, originating at the working face, is carried in the ventilating current and deposited elsewhere in the mine, thereby increasing the explosion hazard. It is apparent, therefore, that if coal dust could be allayed effectively at its points of origin, the dust-explosion hazard in bituminous-coal mines would be reduced greatly.Although dust control is practiced in many bituminous-coal and lignite mines, the extent and effectiveness of control for the, entire industry-is not generally known. The purpose of this circular is to present such information clearly, and to encourage coal-mine operators to install dust- allaying equipment.Factual data on dust-allaying practices at working faces in a large number of the bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States were .compiled from reports on recent Federal inspections of these mines, The information is presented in tabular form to permit review of the dust-allaying practices of a substantial part of the industry, by States, and also according to employment, and loading practice."
