The physical properties and clay mineral content of the major oil-producing formations in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming were determined by analyses of cores from 100 wells. Interrelationships were established among permeability, restored water saturation, clay content, and bulk swelling capacity of the crushed sample and used to estimate the susceptibility of the formations to water damage. The ratio of water permeability to gas permeability (kw/ki) offers a convenient scale for semiquantitatively estimating the water sensitivity of sands. The irreducible water saturation was also found to have a similar relationship to the clay mineral content and the water sensitivity of the sands. The average relation of water permeability to gas permeability is different for each sand, as shown by the curves, and the relative positions of the curves indicate the degree of water sensitivity of each sand from which the susceptibility to water damage may be estimated. How accurately these estimates show formation behavior under field operations will not be known until studies of field performance can be made. The water permeabilities of the Muddy, Minnelusa, and Tensleep sands average about the same as the gas permeabilities, and these sands are classified as insensitive. The water permeabilities of the Sussex and Shannon sands, at the other extreme, are much less than the gas permabilities [when average ki is 30 millidarcys (md), kw is 6.1 md], and these sands are classified as highly water sensitive. The sensitivities of the five other sands are between these extremes.

The production of crude mineral commodities in Bangladesh was limited to natural gas, a small amount of construction materials, and clay for ceramics and bricks. No metallic minerals were mined. The only mineral commodity of economic significance was natural gas. Natural gas production has 'been climbing steadily and becoming an increasingly important source of energy for the country. Proved gas reserves were over 4.5 trillion cubic feet, but the amount has been increasing as exploration discovers large new deposits. Some sources quote reserves at over 10 trillion cubic feet.

This work was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency to determine photochemical specific reactivities of emissions from automobiles using leaded-premium-and regular-grade fuels and prototype lead-free fuels of comparable octane quality. Emissions were photoirradiated in a 100-ft3 environmental (smog) chamber constructed of aluminum and Pyrex glass at three sets of initial hydrocarbon (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) concentrations. Reactivity was measured and expressed in terms of rate-of-NO formation (RNo2) and dosages of oxidant, peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), peroiypropionyl nitrate (PPN), and formaldehyde (HCHO). The results indicate that the evaporative emission samples and the evaporative plus exhaust emissions samples from the lead-free fuels have, in general, higher reactivities per gram than those from the leaded fuels. For the samples containing only exhaust emissions, the only trend observed was the lower specific reactivity exhibited by the leaded premium fuel exhaust. These differences in specific reactivity are taken to reflect the differences in hydro-carbon composition of the fuels and their evaporative and exhaust emissions rather than any difference in lead content per se.

In recent years physico-chemical techniques have been applied for rapid analysis of coal and coke ash as replacements for classical wet-chemical methods. Although the classical methods are accurate, they are time consuming because many chemical separations are necessary to complete an analysis, and they require skilled analysts for accurate work (12).4 For the past several years the Bureau of Mines has applied some of the newer physico-chemical techniques in its continued search for new and improved methods at analysis. The methods of analyzing coal and coke ash evolved from this work include spectrophotometric methods far SiO2, A120, , Fe203 , TiO2, and P2O5; chelatometric titration for CaO and MgO; and flame photometry for Na20 and K2O. The methods are rapid and direct, are suitable for analyzing a group of samples at the same time in production work, and dire results with almost the same accuracy as classical procedures. With the new methods, complete analyses in duplicate can be obtained at a rate of 2 to 3 times that of conventional methods.

The work described in this report was part of a Bureau of Mines program to appraise the titanium-mineral resources of Idaho. Part of the program included churn drilling of alluvial deposits that previous preliminary testing, primarily for rare minerals, had indicated to be potential sources of titanium minerals. The first spot churn drilling began in the Deadwood placer area, Valley County, Idaho, in July 1956 to determine both the amount and grade of the ilmenite, FeTi03. Ten holes, ranging in depth from 6 to 40 feet and aggregating 251 feet, were drilled; 54 samples were taken. The samples were sent to the Spokane field laboratory for concentration and visual estimation of the amounts of the more common minerals in the heavy sand concentrates. For specific determinations samples from each drill hole were composited and shipped to the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Albany, Oreg., where petrographic, quantitative X-ray spectrographic, and chemical analyses were made.

When the criterion for control of scale prevention on the evaporating surfaces is made the conditions in the concentrated boiler water, then this control becomes an exact operation amenable to an accuracy commensurate with all other operations in the boiler room. The responsibility in boiler water conditioning, however, includes more than clean surfaces. Corrosion in feed lines, economizers and the boiler is a function of the condition of the later, and must be controlled. Steam line and turbine blading deposits must be obviated by the system of conditioning. By the chemical treatment employed, the amount and character of noncondensable uses in the steam must be controlled in accordance with the intended use of the steam. All. in all, the responsibility in boiler crater conditioning ends not with the entrance of the water into the boiler but with the passage from the boiler nozzle of steam, the dryness and rarity of which are defined by the uses to be made thereof. A clearer conception of the scope of boiler water conditioning can be obtained by reference to a diagram of the surfaces (Figure 1) at which it functions. Consideration of this diagram leads to the following outline for the problems of boiler water conditioning: (a) Prevention of scale formation on surfaces (1) In contact with water but at which no evaporation occurs. (2) At which evaporation is occurring.

At a mine in central PA, high horizontal stresses have caused long running roof falls resulting in hazardous conditions for the miners and the premature abandonment of panels. Because of these conditions, the mine requested assistance of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in utilizing the 'advance and relieve method to mitigate the affects of horizontal stress on the mine roof. "Advance and relieve" mining involves the removal of a pillar or a portion of a pillar during development, thereby creating a cave along one side of the panel. Following cave development, the horizontal stress is relieved over the workings adjacent to the cave in the active panel. The mine has used this system in three panels with a significant reduction in stress damage and no large roof falls.

Pipe lines through which natural gas is flowing should be buried in order to minimize fluctuations in the temperature of the gas, as these fluctuations have several harmful effects. One of these effects is to decrease the accuracy of measurements of gas volume. In order to meter properly the quantity of gas flowing past any point in a transmission system, it is necessary to how the temperature of the gas. If the temperature remains fairly constant, the gas flow can be measured with a close degree of accuracy, but if it fluctuates rapidly, close measurement is impossible.

The Bureau of Mines, as a part of American Petroleum Institute Research Project 60, Characterization of the Heavy Ends of Petroleum, has made extensive use of gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Data developed in this study were used to develop several correlations that greatly expanded the usefulness of GPC and the data have been used as an aid in the interpretation of mass spectra (MS). GPC retention volume data on pure compounds were used with molecular structure to develop correlations that can be used to accurately predict retention volumes, molecular volumes, densities, chain lengths, and ring numbers of many components of petroleum without resorting to further laboratory experimentation. Conversely, the correlation can be used to select or reject some compounds from several possible compounds that are indicated on the basis of MS analysis. The utility of these correlations in compound type characterization is demonstrated by showing their application to 330° to 550° C fractions from a low-sulfur and a high-sulfur crude oil.

The purpose of this review is to provide an analysis of the supply and demand for coal in Europe in 1955-56 and estimates of future growth in European requirements as a medium for appraisal of the effects and benefits to the economy of the United States. This review stems from observations and evaluations made in contacts with Government and industry representatives of the principal countries of Europe and is based on detailed data selected from the established flow of unclassified economic and statistical material originating in overseas areas for use and deposit in the Bureau of Mines, Foreign Solid Fuels Section. This material includes current reports and analyses prepared by the United States Foreign Service, official reports of individual countries, foreign industry and trade publications, and the committees of the several European organizations engaged in continuing review and study of problems relating to fuels and energy. The review is presented in four sections: 1. Discussion of the more important factors relating to the present and future fuels and energy position of Western Europe.

Data are presented on the characteristics of lignites with emphasis on the composition and fusion properties of the ash. Differences in the analyses of commercial-grade lignites are related primarily to variations in moisture and ash contents. Lignite ash is generally characterized by high concentra¬tions of alkaline earth oxides and a greater tendency for retention of sulfur in the ash than higher-rank coals. Composition of ash varies significantly within and between mines. The differences within mines are significant for short distances and may be eliminated under certain circumstances by normal mixing occurring during mining. The sulfur in lignite averages 0.6 percent and is found primarily in the organic or pyritic forms with only a trace of the sulfate. During the stan¬dard laboratory asking procedures, from 60 to 100 percent of the original sul¬fur is retained in the lignite ash. Trace elements, such as uranium and germanium, in the ash from commercial¬-grade lignites are present in low concentrations, but others, primarily copper and silver, are present in specific samples in concentrations approaching those found in some commercial ores.

Because backfill has occasionally collapsed into an active working area, posing a hazard to miners, engineers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Hecla Mining Co. installed instruments in a cemented, backfilled, stope-ramp intersection at Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. The purpose was to measure stress and strain changes in the backfill and reinforcing members during undercut mining. The instruments were monitored for 6 months while three successive cuts were mined below the intersection. Readings showed induced loads up to 3450 kPa (500 psi) in the backfill as stope walls converged 2.5 to 12 cm (1 to 5 in). The backfill then deformed against the top and bottom plates of the 2-m- (6-ft-) long vertical rock bolts installed as reinforcement, producing loads to 177 kN (40,000 lb)on the rock bolts. We hypothesize that a compressive zone was created in the backfill that allowed the backfill to remain stable as long as the compressive zones from adjacent rock bolts overlapped. This hypothesis is presented in graphical form. Of particular interest was the effect of loading on trusses installed to augment the vertical rock bolts and wire mesh typically installed in backfill. Data from the instruments indicate that wall closure perpendicular to the vein induced loads in truss legs parallel to the vein and in the rock bolt driven through the center of the truss, but, because they are designed to function under tension, truss legs perpendicular to the vein supplied in significant support as a result of compressional forces from wall closure. Based on this study, use of trusses was discontinued, and an alternative support system of wood beams and posts was installed as needed to ensure the safety of miners working beneath the backfill in stope-ramp intersections.

Use controlled blasting techniques to reduce blast-produced overbreak damage to underground mine ribs and back for both safer working conditions and improvements in productivity. The Problem Blasting is used in metal and non-metal underground mine slopes, drifts and crosscuts to fracture rock to be excavated and further processed. Standard blasting also produces fractures in the rock beyond the desired excavation area. This is sometimes evident by rough surfaces, undercutting and other signs of excessive damage. This damage contributes to rockfalls in the mines, a major cause of injuries and fatalities, and equipment damage. A variety of controlled blasting techniques has been developed for civil engineering projects where long-term stability is essential. For several reasons, these methods arc not widely used in mining. For example, these methods incur additional costs and time; there is little need to maintain stable openings over long periods of lime; and there is the perception (hat corrective remedial techniques, such as rock bolting, are more practical. Basically the benefits of these methods are not demonstrably clear for application in underground mines.

The Bureau of Mines has developed test procedures and criteria for evaluating explosive reactivity of explosive-contaminated solid waste substances generated by U.S. Army ammunition plants. These substances are produced as explosive-contaminated sludge from wastewater treatment plants, residues from the burning of munitions and explosives on open ground, and residues from deactivation furnaces. The characterization of explosive reactivity is a prerequisite for disposal of such waste materials, which may be contaminated with primary explosives, propellants, or pyrotechnic materials. The Bureau has proposed two tests for this purpose. These tests were developed to evaluate the explosive reactivity as defined in Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), part 261.23(a)(6) and (7). These are the Bureau&apos;s gap and internal ignition tests, which determine the sensitivity to shock and thermal stimuli, respectively. This report also includes gap and internal ignition reference data for typical blasting agents, high explosives, propellants, and marginally reactive substances. These reference data were used to establish test criteria. The Bureau has evaluated over 400 samples of contaminated soil, sludge, and burning residues using these two test methods.

"INTRODOCTIONMeasurement of the contribution of diesel exhaust to respirable aerosol in mine environments has become increasingly important because of current concerns over the occupational health effects resulting from exposure to diesel emissions. In response to this, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing and evaluating new sampling methods for measuring diesel aerosol in underground mines. Two such techniques are being studied by the Bureau, size selective sampling and Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling. These techniques use measurable physical or chemical characteristics of a mine aerosol sample to infer the amount of diesel particulate material contained in the sample.Size selective sampling is being adapted for measurement of diesel aerosol by the Particle Technology Laboratory (PTL) of the University of Minnesota under sponsorship by the Bureau. 1 It is based on the premise that diesel and mineral dust aerosol can be physically separated by size and collected during sampling using inertial impaction. An independent effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to develop a size selective sampling technique was also sponsored by the Bureau.The second technique, CMB modeling, is being developed by the Bureau as an alternative measurement technique to referee the results obtained using size selective sampling.3 It compares measured trace element ""finger prints"" of aerosol sources with similar profiles of mine aerosol samples. From these, the portions of the sample contributed by each source can be determined. Results of these investigations in underground coal mines have confirmed that diesel and coal dust aerosol are of different size and can be measured separately using size selective sampling techniques.A major difference in diesel usage among underground mines is the requirement for exhaust gas cooling systems in coal and gassy noncoal mines. Nongassy mines usually employ limited exhaust conditioning in the form of catalytic converters, which have limited effect on primary exhaust particulate. The cooling system in most general use in gassy mines is the water scrubber. This device has little effect on most of the gases but removes particulate material from the exhaust. 5 Because of this, exhaust aerosol characteristics in nongassy mines are expected to be different. To see if size selective sampling techniques can be used in such mines, the Bureau and the University of Minnesota conducted a second study in three metal and nonmetal mines, two nongassy and one rated as gassy."

Ventilation-air-heating plants are in use at several iron mines on the Menominee Iron Range, Iron River, Mich. Many of the mines are exceptionally wet; during winter months, when fresh air is forced down the wet air shafts into the mine, it is usually necessary to heat the fresh air to above freezing so that the openings will not be closed by ice. The problem of ice closing air shafts has been solved by the practice of reversing the air current before the openings have become completely closed. This procedure involves drawing warm air from the mine up the usual down-draft air shaft. The M. A. Hanna Co. has found, at some of their mines on the Menominee Range, that it is more convenient to heat the below-freezing air rather than reverse the air current. Intermittent freezing and thawing of ice that has formed in the air shaft tends to loosen the wall rock, requiring major shaft repairs. The openings are kept free of ice the year around by heating the fresh air during periods of below-freezing weather. Table 1 shows the monthly minimum moan, maximum mean, and mean temperatures for the Iron River area. Under normal conditions of temperature, the furnaces are fired in November and usually are not allowed to go out until April of the following year.

"With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. "INTRODUCTION The Bozeman corundum deposit was first examined in May 1944 by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. In August 1944, the property was re-examined because of a sharply increased war demand for corundum. A small program of trench exploring was undertaken after the second examination. The work was started in October 1944 and was completed in December 1944. This report presents the essential data obtained by the exploratory work.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that, they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. This report presents information obtained by examination and investigation of manganese deposits in northeastern Oregon during May and June 1954 and April 1957. Maps, assays, and other examination data are presented on 10 manganese deposits -9 in Baker County and 1 in Grant County. Included among these deposits are all those that have undergone substantial exploration or have a record of production. Seven of the Baker County deposits occur as characteristically small, irregular pods and lenses in argillite. The remaining Baker County prospects are [marily] narrow, vein-type occurrences in schist. The Grant County occurrence in greenstone and serpentine. All the deposits are composed of various manganese oxides, intermixed with abundant quartz and chert.
