In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, production trends have been analyzed for 82 gob gas ventholes on 7 longwall panels in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed, Pennsylvania. Cumulative production from individual holes was found to vary considerably, ranging from 0.03 x 106 to 10.1 x 106 m3. Peak production rates were generally about 0.03 x 106 to 0.06 x 106 m3/d, but rates over 0.10 x 1@ m3/d were observed. The variability of gas production from individual holes can be attributed to several factors, including completion practices and problems, the extent of fracture development in the strata above the extracted panel, water production, and location on the panel. Of particular significance is hole location. Holes on the ends of the panels, where overburden strata are in tension because of the support of the surrounding pillars, were generally the highest and longest producers. This observation led to the experimental placement of gob gas ventholes in the zone of tension along the margin of a panel, instead of in the traditional centerline location, which is in compression. Analysis of 7 months of gas production data indicates that the experimental near-margin holes produced 77 pct more gas than did centerline holes on the same panel.

"To help evaluate the vibration patterns of an excised lung, a method is developed to determine which parts of the surface of an excised lung are responding to acoustic excitation via the trachea. Holographic interferometry, a very' sensitive technique ·that can measure movements of a few microns, is used to detect the lung surface movements.The intact lung and heart are excised from Long· Evans male rats weighing 250 gm. A tube is inserted into the trachea and connected via a funnel to a 3 inch cone speaker. The assembly is positioned in the holographic unit and excited at frequencies up to 10,000 Hz. The holographic unit contains an acousto-optic shutter used with a 0.5 watt Argon laser.The resulting reconstructed holograms contain interference fringes that are indicated of lung surface vibration.INTRODUCTIONA 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Biomechanics [1] describes diseases of the lung as a major national health problem. One of the recommendations of the report is for continued study of the mechanical properties of lung tissue. As an example, the report cites at least three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns or the lung."

THE BITUMINOUS coal and lignite industry increased substantially in 1962, compared with the 1961 figures. The major items of production, consumption, exports, and productivity increased. However, certain key items declined. The steady upward trend in mechanization failed to materialize for the third year; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 2 previous years; and the tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. The percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1962-422 million tons-was 5 percent greater than the 403 million tons produced in 1961. Production was greater in 1962, owing largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities and to more exports.

"The major thrust of this research is directed towards a better undstanding of the behavior of airborne dust particles in underground mine airways. Figure 61 shows a schematic of dust flow in mine airway. The work included development of a mathematical model of dust behavior in mine airways, experimental study of the behavior of dust clouds and comparison of computer model output and experimental results. Re-entraiment is a secondary source of dust in mine airways and factors affecting re-entrainment are being identified.Investigations have encompassed both experimental and theoretical research into the behavior of dust in mine airways. Experiments were performed in mine airways under both controlled and normal operating conditions (Figure 62). The controlled experiments included the documentation of the concentration and desposition patterns for two types of dust under three different velocities. Real-time dust concentration data were obtained using real-time aerosol monitors (RAM-1) (Figure 63).On the theoretical front, a convection-diffusion model of the dust flow phenomenon in mine airways was developed considering dominant mechanisms affecting dust transport and deposition in mine airways. Mechanisms modeled include turbulent and gravitational deposition, coagulation, and dispersion. Comparative analyses of results of the controlled experiments with the predictions of the mathematical model were carried out. In addition to the overall validity, the adequacy of the individual components of the model, such as deposition in the total and respirable range, and dispersion were examined in light of the experimental observations."

However, tonnage per man per day increased from 12.83 tons in 1960 to 13.87 tons in 1961, owing partly to the increased tonnage produced by continuous mining machines. Also, the percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1961-403 million tons-was 3 percent less than the 416 million tons produced in 1960. Production was retarded in 1961, owing largely to the business recession and reduced exports.

Develop a machine which can accurately simulate both the breathing and metabolic functions of a human being. The advantages of such a machine over a human being for testing of respiratory protective devices lie in its ability to quantify metabolic input, its repeatability, and the lack of a need to deal with the vagaries of human subjects. Breathing simulation has been widely achieved throughout the world but metabolic simulation has not. Approach Utilize the latest computer technology and place the complex portion of the system in software, leaving the mechanical portion as simple as possible. How It Works The concept for the automated breathing and metabolic simulator (ABMS) was developed through a research contract with the Pennsylvania State University. The ABMS utilizes a continuous removal/replacement concept to simulate metabolic functions, with breathing and metabolic functions being controlled by a computer. The mechanical portion of the machine is simple; the complexity of the system lies in its computer software which is not subject to maintenance problems.

Stresses that damage coal mine trailing cables were investigated to obtain a quantified description of cable-stress locations, magnitudes, and frequency of occurrence. Stresses occurring in operating mining sections were measured and observed. Answers to questions that arose during the underground investigations were pursued under controlled conditions, both in the field and in the laboratory. Cable-handling suggestions that minimize or eliminate the stresses are summarized in the form of recommendations to mine operators.

Table 28 and figure 10 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface sand and gravel mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 28 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. At surface sand and gravel mines, a total of 70 fires with 60 injuries occurred in 29 states during 1990-2001. Fifty-nine of the fires caused 60 injuries (none of the fires involved contractors). The yearly average was 5.8 fires and five injuries. The Ewhr value was 741 x 106 hr (Irr = 0.016), and the LWD value was 6,921. California had the most fires (nine fires and five injuries), followed by Michigan (six fires and six injuries) and Pennsylvania (five fires and five injuries). Of these states, Pennsylvania had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.052). Table 29, partly illustrated in figure 11, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires and fire injuries show an increase during the second period followed by a decrease during the fourth period followed by a small increase during the fifth period and a sharp decrease during the last period. Employees' working hours increased during most of the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values.

This chapter explains the Federal regulations governing the use of dust respirators in mines and tunnels and describes the most common dust respirators used. Filter materials and filter efficiencies for respirators are discussed. This chapter also gives some guide-lines for respirator use and recommends sources for more dust respirator information. Respirator effectiveness in reducing dust exposure usually exceeds the effectiveness of most engineering control methods. RESPIRATOR REGULATIONS [Different regulations govern respirator use in coal mines, metal/nonmetal mines, and tunnels under construction.] Coal mines under Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) jurisdiction. Coal mine operators are required to meet dust standards using only engineering control methods. Typical engineering control methods include ventilation and water sprays. Respirators are not regarded as an engineering control method, so respirators cannot be used in lieu of engineering controls.

Geology is an integral part of roof control, mine design, and production operations. Yet, the importance of geology, coal/rock as an engineering construction material and its properties and behavior within the planned mine areas, in overall mine production operations has not been hilly appreciated. Of all of the engineering disciplines, mining engineers work with the most challenging construction materials. They must deal with rock materials as they exist in their natural states and design mine structures without well-known and defined properties. Further complicating the design process is the variability of the in-situ rock materials with rock types and rock properties varying widely from place-to-place. Predicting properties in advance of mining is difficult and oftentimes impossible. This is why some types of roof-control failures may suddenly occur in some areas when a single roof-control technique is consistently applied to an entire panel, section, or mine. Many roof-control techniques are primarily applicable to the geological conditions that were assumed in the development of those techniques and variations of the rocker rock properties may require modification or significant redesign of the support technology.

Coke Since the beginning of manufacturing of metallurgical coke in the United States, which dates from about 1859, Pennsylvania has main tamed supremacy in coke production Available statistics for the year 1880 show an output of 3,338,300 short tons, which was neatly trebled by the end of the succeeding 10 years. From this time on the increase was steady, though not rapid, and in 1922 the total production was 13,991,892 tons, which is approximately 37 per cent of the total coke production of the United States. The main reason for the rapid development of the coke industry in Pennsylvania lies in the abundance of coals particularly adapted to beehive coking, for which purpose the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville district has long been looked upon as standard At first practically all metallurgical coke was made in beehive ovens, the only exception being the short lived and wasteful method of coking in piles, byproduct owns did not make then appearance until after 1893 The suitability of a beehive coking coal cannot be accurately predicted from its chemical analysis, but it can be said, perhaps, that the volatile matter should be about 32 per cent, and that the oxygen content should not be mole than 10 pet cent or less than 4 per cent The sulphur and phosphorus content should be small-not over 1 25 per cent sulphur and under 0 02 pen cent phosphorus-and the ash content should not be over 7 per cent The Pittsburgh bed at Connellsvnlle fills these requirements well, as may be seen from the following representative analysis. "The U.S. Bureau of Mines established on August 15, 1983, the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust within the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Minnesota. The Center's research program has been developed with recognition of the stated objective of the Federal Mine Safety and Health laws which is to ""... permit each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of his entire adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupation-related disease . . . ."" The Center's program is designed to permit an accelerated attack on the fundamental research problems for the control of respirable dust in mines.The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. The Generic Technology Center's research program explores these concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniques that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The work concentrates on: (1) control of dust generation; (2) dilution, dispersion and collection in mine airways; (3) characterization of dust particles; (4) interaction of dust and lungs; and (5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. The fundamental aspects of this work are applicable to the control of respirable dust problems in both hard rock mines and coal mines and to other dusts such as diesel-generated. The Center activities involve the training of engineers and scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students through their respective institutions, and the technology transfer to the industry. The Center also serves as the reference center for publications' in the respirable dust area.The Center is composed of faculty from the four universities/institutes listed above. The personnel, facilities and equipment that are available to the Center from these entities are diverse, complementary and comprehensive. More than fifty scientists, engineers; and medical personnel in the Center are engaged in respirable dust research. Additionally, the expertise and facilities of the NIOSH--Division of Respirable Disease Studies are available as a result of the existing relationship between NIOSH and West Virginia University.The breakdown of the dust research program into the five areas mentioned above recognizes the importance of an integrated fundamental research approach to the respirable dust problem compatible and complementary with the existing and ongoing U.S. Bureau of Mines activities. The specific projects in the research areas are a result of a careful evaluation of the past and ongoing research activities, the identification of areas where data and information are scarce, and awareness of the recommendation of the National Academy of Sciences Study on the Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust. Penn State is the administrative unit for the Center. Funding to date is nearly $6.5 million."

Coal mine fires pose a constant danger to the safety of miners and to their livelihood. Underground mine fires pose an added hazard because of the confined environment with remote exits. Enactment of safety regulations [30 CFR2 75 and 771 for under- ground coal mines and surface coal operations has greatly improved the safety of miners. However, mine fires and fire injuries remain serious hazards for all coal mining operations. This report analyzes mine fires and fire injuries for all U.S. coal mining categories (underground coal mines, surface of underground coal mines, surface coal mines, and coal preparation plants) during 1990-1999. Fires involving contractors are also included in the analysis. Similar analyses (for underground coal mines only) by the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) were reported by McDonald and Pornroy [I9801 and Pornroy and Carigiet [I9951 for 1950-1977 and 1978-1992, respectively. For comparison purposes, data for 1978-1 992 are mentioned in the "Underground Coal Mine Fires" section of this report. Detailed analyses of mobile equipment fires for all underground and surface coal and metal/nonmetal mining categories during 1990-1999 have recently been reported by NIOSH [De Rosa 20041. Risk rate values (fire and injury risk rates) for the 10-year period (1990-1999) and for five successive 2-year periods within the 10-year period are derived. Risk rate values for individual states for the 10-year period are also derived. Other variables by state and time period include employees&apos; working hours, lost workdays, and coal production (underground and surface coal mines only). The number of fire fatalities is reported by time period. Variables such as ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material are reported by five 2-year periods only. Furthermore, the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires has been analyzed by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location. For comparison purposes, the major fire and fire injury findings for all coal mining categories have been reported. The data in this report were derived from "Injury Experience in Coal Mining" [MSHA 1991a, 1992,1993,1994a, 1995a, 1996, 1997, 1998b, 1999c, 20001, "Fire Accident Reports" [MSHA 199 1 b,c; 1994b; 1995b,c; 1998a,c,d,e,f; 1999a,b,d,e], MSHA "Fire Accident Abstracts" internal publications, and verbal communications with mine personnel. Mining companies are required by 30 CFR 50 to report to MSHA all fires that result in injuries and fires that are not extinguished within 30 min of discovery. A small number of fires lasting <30 min without injuries reported in the "Fire Accident Abstracts" have been included in this report. The analysis in this report will provide the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the mining industry with a better understanding of the causes and hazards of mine fires and fire injuries. It will also form a basis for developing future fire research programs.

This paper is one of a series describing methods and costs of recovering sand and gravel from alluvial deposits in the United States and deals directly with the methods employed by the Portland Gravel Co. in operating a clamshell dredge on the Willamette River near Portland, Oreg., and a pump dredge on the Columbia River near Vancouver, Wash. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs may in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

Determination of the aldehyde content of Diesel-engine exhaust gas has proved rather cumbersome and unsatisfactory when carried out in its entirety in field investigations; therefore, studies were conducted with a view to developing methods by which samples might be collected in the field and trans-ported to the laboratory for analysis. Experience also indicated that aldehyde samples collected in water solution and then transported to the laboratory sometimes underwent serious changes in composition if several days elapsed between sampling and analysis. Polymerization of the aldehydes, which takes place readily in dilute aqueous solutions, may have been the cause of such changes. Because of these difficulties, experiments were conducted to find a suitable stabilizer or preservative for dilute aqueous solutions of the aldehydes that occur in Diesel-engine exhaust gas, so that in field studies a known volume of gaseous sample might be collected and brought into contact with water, and the resulting solution of aldehydes analyzed in the laboratory at some later time with reasonable certainty that the results would represent the composition of the original sample,

The mining industry utilizes a vast store of knowledge, wisdom, and engineering talent in designing mining systems. However, the complexity of the required systems and the presence of numerous variables frequently necessitates raking important decisions without having adequate accurately detailed information. That many of the decisions made in the past were nearly correct, in the long run, is substantiated by the number of successful mining enterprises that exist in the world today. Subsequent to 1940, the disciplines of operations research and systems engineering were developed. The disciplines have produced methods of providing better information to persons responsible for making decisions.

Gadolinium, dysprosium, and yttrium are difficult to electrowin as high-purity liquid metals because of their high melting points (>1,300° C). Samarium metal is difficult to prepare directly by electrolysis because the metal reacts with the electrolyte. In this Bureau of Mines study, the rare-earth metal was electrodeposited on a solid manganese, chromium, or iron cathode to form a low-melting alloy. The alloy was then vacuum distilled to separate the rare-earth metal from the ferrous metal. A typical samarium metal product, obtained as the distillate from vacuum distillation of a samarium-iron alloy, contained 150 ppm oxygen, 80 ppm carbon, and 50 ppm iron as impurities, Gadolinium metal, obtained as a residue from the distillation of a gadolinium-chromium alloy, contained 300 ppm oxygen, 200 ppm carbon, and 100 ppm chromium.

The heats of formation at 298.15° K of calcium tungstate, calcium molybdate, and magnesium molybdate were determined by solution calorimetry. For the heats of formation from the elements, the values obtained were calcium tungstate, -402.4 ± 0.5 kcal/mole, calcium molybdate, -369.5 ± 0.3 kcal/mole, -334.8 ± 0.2 kcal/mole. For the heats of formation from the oxides J the values obtained were calcium tungstate, -49.2 ± 0.4 kcal/mole, calcium molybdate, -39.6 ± 0.1 kcal/mole, and magnesium molybdate, -12.9 [ ] 0.1 kcal/mole.

One aspect of a program to improve the chances of survival following coal mine disasters is the development of a communications system which will allow surviving miners to make their circumstances known to rescue teams. Various communications techniques can be considered, including electromagnetic systems, acoustic systems, and hybrid systems. The electromagnetic and acoustic systems would be independent of existing mine communications systems and set up specifically for use in emergencies. Hybrid systems might use a short emergency link to existing telephone systems in the mine. Many variations are technically possible, and the primary task is in evaluating the relative merits of each, so that the most workable system can be selected.

MULSIM/NL (multiple scams, nonlinear) is a three-dimensional boundary-element method (BEM) program developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for stress and displacement analysis of coal mines and thin metalliferous veins. It can analyze one to four parallel seams that can have any orientation with respect to the Earth&apos;s surface. Three main new features distinguish MULSIM/NL from its predecessors: (1) nonlinear material models, (2) multiple mining steps, and (3) energy release and strain energy computations. MULSIM/NL has six material models for the in-seam material: (1) linear elastic for coal, (2) strain softening, (3) elastic plastic, (4) bilinear hardening, (5) strain hardening, and (6) linear elastic for gob. Detailed checks show that numerical stress and displacement calculations compare well to known analytic solutions for simple problems. The total energy release calculated by MULSIM/NL is comprised of three basic terms: (1) strain energy release from the mined-out material, (2) linear kinetic energy release due to change in gravitational potential over the mined-out area, and (3) nonlinear kinetic energy release due to nonlinear materials in the total backfill and gob area. The strain energy release term is modified to account for nonlinear stress-strain behavior in the unmined materials. Comparisons of these numerical energy release rate calculations with known analytic solutions show excellent agreement.
