Lime-soda sinters, made and processed for recovering alumina and soda, consisted of several types of compound structures differing from the ideal dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate. Many or these compound structures were causes for low alumina recovery and contributed to the relation or leach slurries. Presence or free lime, whether in the sinter or released by hydrolysis of sinter compounds, contributed to relation of leach slurries. Free lime tends to establish the initial viscosity assumed by a leach slurry. Previous investigations by the Bureau of Mines (1, 4)4/ and by other laboratories (5) have demonstrated the technical applicability of the lime-soda sinter process to the recovery of alumina from aluminum silicate materials. The basic concept of the process is sintering aluminum silicate materials with limestone and soda ash for the production of dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate and then extracting the sodium aluminate by leaching the sinter in causticized liquors. Alumina is precipitated from the pregnant liquors by carbonating with carbon dioxide. The Methane Control and the Respirable Dust Groups at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center (TCMRC) cooperated recently in obtaining production samples of approximately 1 ton each, from the loading conveyors of a ripper, a borer, and a loading machine in conventional development headings. These samples were sized, in four stages, from plus 4 in to minus 10 µm. The conventional product had the least fines of the three production methods. The borer product had more fines than did the ripper product, but it also had a greater amount of large pieces. All three products, as sampled, had essentially the same amount of minus 10-µm particles. Photomicrographs and surface?-area comparisons were made. Gas -adsorption, surface-area determinations on particles under 37 µm give essentially the same value. Surface-area calculations, assuming spherical particles and no porosity, give a smaller area to the conventional product.

The Bureau of Mines developed a method for analyzing elastically certain types of protective cabs and canopies used on underground electric face equipment. The method is based on plane frame theory, and to be amenable to analysis by this method, cabs and canopies must contain symmetry about one plane. Additionally, protective structures with one or more top members in the long direction that do not frame into the columns should be approximately twice as long as they are wide and have two or more internal top members in the short direction. The assumptions and limitations of the plane frame method as regards analysis of three-dimensional cabs and canopies are discussed. A step-by-step procedure for application of the plane frame method is given, and three example canopies are analyzed following this procedure. Elastic strengths calculated for the three example canopies compare within 10 percent of those computed by the more complicated space frame analysis. Formulas employed in plane frame analysis of cabs and canopies are given in the appendixes.

The data obtained from this study cover test areas that are gassy to ultragassy and pillared areas of different sizes and degrees of tightness. The methods of controlling ventilation, applying bleeders, and supporting bleeder entries varied in the different test areas. It was not possible to study all conditions likely to be encountered in coal mines. Undoubtedly, there are areas where bleeder entries, even though properly planned and maintained, might prove unsatisfactory. However, on the basis of this study, the following observations were made: 1. Tests showed that each bleeder system studied provided some movement of air through the pillared area; the quantities of air delivered to the pillar line, ranged from 23 to 82 percent, depending mainly on the extent to which bleeder re-turns were used as main returns from the section. 2. Pressure measurements taken across pillared areas showed maximum pressure drops ranging from 0.05 inch of water for a shallow gob to 2.69 inches for a very deep gob. The pressure differentials varied with the size and tightness of the gob but proved adequate to induce airflow across worked-out areas or through fringes of the gob to the bleeder return system.

1.0 FRAMEWORK FOR COMPARISON This document describes the decision factors that bear on the selection of the modulation process for the wireless underground medium frequency (MF) communication system. The selected modulation process must satisfy the Bureau of Mines stated objective of improving general communications within an underground mine. The improvement being sought includes the development of a wireless communication technology of measurable benefit to both mine safety and mine productivity. The improvement will allow wireless communications paths to exist between roving miners. The wireless communication paths will also be made compatible with the existing underground telephone system to extend paging and voice communication throughout the underground mine. The new wireless equipment will include man-pack, vehicular, repeater, and base station transceivers. Repeaters and base stations will feature coupling networks for interfacing with the existing telephone circuits. Frequency modulation (FM) and single sideband (SSB) modulation processes are analyzed in view of the special conditions associated with underground mining. Of primary importance is the tremendous electrical noise generated in an operating mine that could adversely affect communications quality. High noise coupled with high attenuation rate of near field signals forces the communication system to be inherently short range. The Bureau of Mines investigated factors that influence the formation of methane and other hydrocarbon gases in coal, which is an integral part of the coalification process. Coalification begins with a biogenetic stage in which plant debris decomposes and peat is formed; methane and CO2 are the predominant gases produced during this stage. During the diagenetic stage of coalification hydrogen and the hydrocarbon gases methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, butene, iso-and normal butane, and pentane are formed by dissociation of the organic material. Methane may also be produced by a secondary reaction of hydrogen with unsaturates or by the reduction of CO2. The gas contained in coalbeds is a mixture of methane, C2 through C5 alkanes, CO2, O2, N2, H2, and He; its heating value is equivalent to that of natural gas. The gas content of coal depends on many variables, but an empirical relationship between adsorptive capacity, rank, and depth has been observed.

A High Splint coal was carbonized in a low-temperature, fluidized-bed sys-tem to study the effects of thermal cracking on the products of decomposition. The coal was fluidized in recycle gas at 485° to 600° C, and the products were cracked at 600°, 700°, and 800° C in a bed of fluidized coke. Yields of tar, pitch, paraffins, and olefins decreased as carbonization temperature increased. Thermal cracking of the tar vapors produced the highest tar yields at 600° C, and light oil yield increased at cracking temperatures up to 700° C. At an 800° C cracking temperature, the yield of light oil decreased.

This information circular is one of a series describing mining methods and costs, being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Sunbright mine of the Foote Mineral Co. at Sunbright, Va., is the southernmost underground limestone mine in the State. It is a comparatively recent operation, and a description of its rapid development to production stage may have particular interest for the limestone-mining industry. Briefly, a permissible schedule of the Bureau of Mines establishes certain minimum standards for safety; it gives details of test methods adopted to determine whether these standards have been met, and a list of charges for such tests. Any manufacturer has the privilege of submitting his product for test in accordance with the conditions outlined in the schedules. His action is wholly voluntary, for the Federal Government has no jurisdiction as to what equipment shall be used in mines, this authority being left to the various States. When the product of a manufacturer has met the schedule requirements, he is permit¬ted to advertise this fact and to attach an approval plate with the bureau's seal to each machine he makes that is identical in every way with the equipment tested, inspected, and approved by the bureau. This work of approval has grown by the addition of new schedules until at present a great many mines are using one or more classes of permissible equipment, and there is still a demand for other approved apparatus in the ever-widening field of electrically operated machinery. The safety of electrical equipment of this type depends on four fundamentals, namely, (1) correct principles of design; (2) proper assembly of parts at the factory; (3) proper assembly and installation of equipment at the mine; (4) and proper operation and maintenance after installation. The first two factors are within the province of the manufacturer. The bureau either inspects and tests several models of one product, such as electric cap lamps, or one model, such as an electric motor. If this series of tests proves satisfactory, the manufacturer is given the privilege of making other appliances, and assembling them in the same way; the approval plate he attaches is his guaranty that the equipment is identical with the one tested and inspected by the bureau. Using solution calorimetry, the following heats of reaction were determined: (1) NaCN(c) + 1/Cu20(c) + 129H20(l) ? CuCN(c) + NaOH?128.5H2O ?H = -13.44±0.10 kcal/mole, (2) HCN(2) + NaOH?128.5H20 ? NaCN(c) + 129.5H20(l) ? = -2.52±0.02 kcal/mole. From these reactions, the heats of formation for CuCN(c) and HCN(2) were calculated to be 22.7±0.4 kcal/mole and 24.9±0.4 kcal/mole, respectively. Reaction 2 was made to check the consistency of literature values for heats of formation of HCN and NaCN. Adiabatic calorimetric measurements between 10° and 400° K showed the entropy and heat capacity of CuCN(c) to be 21.51±0.06 eu and 14.58±0.04 cal/mole deg, respectively, at 298° K. A broad anomaly in the heat capacity was found in the temperature range 285°-320° K. The heat of transition associated with this anomaly was less than 1 cal/mole, the sensitivity of the measurements.

The Gates of the Mountains Wilderness study area is underlain by intrusive and sedimentary rocks, mainly limestone. No limestone has been produced from the study area; suitable material is more readily available elsewhere. Small amounts of gold, sapphires, and corundum were produced from a placer deposit along the banks of the Missouri River. The remaining gravel contains low mineral values. Other alluvial deposits along the Missouri River and Beaver Creek contain no identified economic resources other than sand and gravel. Some deposits could provide suitable construction material for local use.

Tunnel-driving is recognized as a hazardous occupation; adequate support of roof and sides for preventing accidents from falling material is usually one of the most important safety problems. Where extraordinary conditions of sand and water are found, this problem becomes even more difficult. Tunneling at the Tioga No.2 mine was stopped when a 22-foot bed of water-saturated, fine gray sand was encountered. The tunnel, designed to house an ore-conveyor belt, was being driven from both ends. Driving was extremely difficult at both the upper and lower faces when the sand horizon was reached. A distance of 178 feet remained between the faces. Heavy pressures deformed the steel-supporting rings at the upper face, and there was an inrush of mud and sand at the lower face.

Investigations were conducted to develop spectrochemical methods capable of determining 0.01 to 100 micrograms of metals in 50 milliliters of solution. The use of gallium hydroxide (Ga(OH)3) as a carrier-precipitant to concentrate metallic ions is described. A porous-cup graphite electrode is used to collect the precipitate. A specially designed plunger permits the electrode assembly to serve as the sample-containing electrode in the subsequent spec-trographic analysis. Analytical curves are presented for antimony, arsenic, beryllium, and zinc. Sensitivities of detection are given for 13 elements. The techniques were applied to identify impurities separated from tungsten, to determine trace impurities in solutions containing high concentrations of magnesium, cobalt, or nickel, and to identify trace impurities in hydrofluoric acid. Laboratory glassware was a serious source of contamination when low levels of zinc were determined.

The unsteady, one-dimensional, compressible-flow equations have been solved numerically for a deflagration propagating through a gallery of finite length closed at the ignition end and open at the opposite end. These equations were solved for two situations wherein (1) the propagating flame was extinguished after 0.1 sec or before the return of aerodynamic disturbances reflected from the open end, and (2) the flame was allowed to propagate a full 0.8 sec until it was extinguished. It was found that the process of sudden flame extinguishment creates rarefaction waves that, upon entering the burned zone, produce resonance within the burned cavity. For the relatively small value of the product of the expansion ratio (8.5) and the effective burning velocities of 7.4 m sec-1 for the first experiment and 4.9 m sec-1 for the second experiment, it was found that the acoustic approximation provides an adequate estimate of the pressures developed ahead of the flame during the system's early history.

One mineral deposit in the Golden Trout Wilderness has potential. The currently producing Pine Tree Mine on the Little Kern River has an estimated 120,000 tons (109,000 t) each of indicated and inferred reserves averaging 0.77 percent tungsten trioxide. No apparent potential exists for base or precious metal or other mineral deposits. INTRODUCTION The Golden Trout Wilderness, established by Congress in 1978 under Public Law 95-237, encompasses 240,000 acres (97,000 ha) of conifer-forested, rolling, upland plateau at the headwaters of the Kern River in Inyo and Sequoia National Forests (fig. 1). Abundant streams locally contain Golden Trout, namesake of the area. Major roads serve the area to the west and east of the Wilderness; access is poor to the north and south.

Analytical results for nahcolite, dawsonite, total extractable alumina, and oil yield are presented for samples representing Green River Formation oil shales in the saline section of two cores from Colorado's Piceance Creek basin. Analyses are also reported for samples extending the analyzed section of Colorado corehole No. 3 beyond that reported previously. These data permit evaluation of the deposit for possible production of three coproducts--shale oil, alumina, and sodium carbonates--from the saline section of the formation at these sampled points.

Data are presented to show oil vaporization resulting from the passage of natural gas through a sand-packed tube saturated with synthetic reservoir oils. The Bureau of Mines performed 13 experiments, using reservoir oils synthesized with base crude oils of approximately 22°, 35°, and 45° API, at 100°, 175°, or 250° F and 1,100, 2,600, or 4,100 psia. It has been determined that the amount of vaporization is significant if proper conditions exist. These experiments show that oil vaporization depends on pressure, temperature, volatility of the oil, and amount of gas cycled. Increases in each of these conditions increase the volume of oil vaporized.

The possibility of replacing the brattice cloth closest to the coal mine working face with an air curtain mounted on top of a continuous-mining machine or with a diffuser fan was explored by the Bureau of Mines. Preliminary tests conducted at a full-scale model working face with the brattice end set at 18 feet showed that the air curtain improved face ventilation only slightly and was not nearly as effective as placing the brattice at 10 feet. A 2,000-ft3/min diffuser was more effective than the air curtain. It is concluded that the air curtain probably could not function as a line brattice extension, although the diffuser fan may have some potential.

In the treatment of any illness the early diagnosis is of very great importance . This is especially true in cases of carbon monoxide poisoning , whether acute or sub-acute in character. A diagnosis of CO poisoning is usually made from a correlation of the history , the possible place of exposure , and the symptoms produced . This , however, is not positive evidence because CO often is present in unsuspected places and can be absent in suspected places . Also , the symptoms of this type of poisoning are common to other causes . In many such cases the correct diagnosis may be very difficult , if not impossible by this method and as a result little or no treatment is given . Sub- acute cases , those in which the subject is exposed to concentration sufficient to cause only headaches , malaise , feeling of weakness and dizziness , may be incorrectly diagnosed and as a result , improperly treated . Probably the best method of diagnosis is by examination of the subject's blood . Many methods for the detection of CO in the blood have been developed , but owing to their various individual disadvantages have never come into common usage . Some of the quantitative methods are satisfactory with regard to accuracy but require elaborate and expensive apparatus , special technique and training, or are too delicate and cumbersome for field use . It is of vital importance in all industrial and domestic accidents occuring at places where CO might be suspected or where the symptoms are typical of CO poisoning that a qualitative and preferably a quantitative determination be made the extent of poisoning being of importance in deciding whether CO was the direct or contributary cause) to show the presence or absence of 0. This is indeed essential from a medical standpoint as it aids in prescribing treatment and from a legal standpoint to insure justice in the claims that are often unjustly decided for want of positive evidence.

During a recent National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health field evaluation of a newly designed filtration and pressurization system for an enclosed cab of a surface drill, it was determined that the drill operator's respirable-dust exposure was significantly increased during time periods when the cab door was opened to manually guide another section of drill steel into place to achieve additional cutting depth. Although no dust cloud was visible when the door was opened to perform this task, the drill operator's exposure was documented (over a three-day test period) to be nine times higher than when the cab door was closed. Even at this higher respirable-dust concentration, the drill operator's exposure remained well below the permissible exposure limit governed by the federal dust standard; however, an alternative method is being investigated to guide the drill steel in place in order to eliminate this increased exposure. .
