The Bureau of Mines made laboratory batch and small-scale continuous flotation tests of a sample of pegmatite rock from a deposit of the Lithium Corporation of America, Inc., near Kings Mountain, N.C., to determine the feasibility of producing commercial-grade spodumene concentrates. Various reagents and flotation procedures were tested to determine the optimum conditions for floating the spodumene and retarding the gangue minerals. The best results were obtained when sodium fluoride and lignin sulfonate were used as the pulp conditioner and oleic acid was used as the spodumene collector. The continuous flotation tests indicated that commercial-grade. spodumene concentrates analyzing 6.4 pct. Li2O could be produced with recovery of 77 pct. of the lithia in the ore.

Recent research conducted by NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under parent regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90 °C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, tightly wrapped with many turns, ell carrying current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften and become easily damaged. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution, and mine foes. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor temperature of untie trailing cables during no anal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/175 micrometer Graded Index Multimode Optical Fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements arc made using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperature with an accuracy of plus or minus one degree centigrade over a length of 4 km at 1-m intervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted simulating actual mine conditions and provide important data to allow MSHA's Approval and Certification Center to develop approval criteria for cyclically rated reeled machines.

This study is intended to serve three roles. First, it is an extension of the previous works under the same title that have been the overview and summary chapter of the international volume of Minerals Yearbook since the inception of that volume. Following the traditional format of past chapters, the basic statistical presentations herein deal chiefly with 1989, and in some instances with 1988, the latter only because more recent, comprehensive global statistics for 1989 are simply not yet available owing to delayed data collection and processing in some countries and continued governmental suppression of data in others. The second role of this study is to provide an update to the coverage of events impacting on the world's mineral industry that have occurred between the end of 1989 and the preparation of this study. Inclusion of this update is almost essential because of the potential effect of some of these events on global mineral industry activities.

This Bureau of Mines manual for design of surface mine haulage roads covers such aspects of haulage road design as road alignment (both vertical and horizontal), construction materials, cross slope, and drainage provisions. Traffic control and design of proper lane widths to promote safe vehicle movement are included, as are suggested criteria for road and vehicle maintenance and for runaway vehicle safety provisions. The aim of this publication is to provide those involved with surface mine haulage road design with a complete manual of recommended practices that, if implemented, will promote safer, more efficient haulage routes.

Presented below is a review of how the objectives, as outlined in the statement of the problem, were achieved. 1. Methods of evaluating the performance of grounding systems must be described. These methods are the subject of Chapter III. 2. Field trips to operating mines should be undertaken, and a cri¬tique of their grounding systems made upon the basis of obser¬vation and the application of the above techniques. An analysis of field trip data, along with practical recommendations, is in¬cluded in Chapter IV, while a complete review of all field trips is given in Appendix I. 3. Because of their thoroughness, present coal mine regulations should be evaluated, and their applicability to open-pit environ¬ments appraised. This has been done in consultation with governmental agency, manufacturing, operating mine, and consult¬ing engineers. As stated in Chapter IV, insight gained through field observations has served to amplify and extend the base of knowledge from which the recommendations were made. 4. The results of these investigations should lead to suggested Federal standards. Such recommendations comprise Appendix II. In addition, several important factors, which are discussed in Chapter IV, were brought to light as a direct result of the field research. 5. Cameroon's mineral industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum, The economic development of the country depended on the production and export of crude on. Output was estimated to be 49 million barrels in 1985 compared with 56 million barrels in 1984 and 47 million barrels in 1988. The country's only refinery consumed approximately 12% of the daily production of crude oil while operating at slightly over 50% capacity. The refinery output, however, supplied the domestic need for motor fuel and heating oils. Cameroon's economic prospects were heavily dependent on the oil sector, which bad been responsible for the recent strong growth in the economy. The country consistently sought to avoid the problems associated with an overdependence on oil and followed a relatively broad-based development strategy, using oil revenues to sustain and encourage growth in other sectors. Approximately 75% of the gross domestic product (GDP) was attributed to the mineral industry in some form. GDP growth was approximately 6.5% during 1985.

METHANE EMISSION PEAKS Methane emission from the coal at continuous miner faces varies considerably. Plotted on a chart, methane emissions consist of a series of peaks and valleys corresponding to the cutting cycle of the mining machine, with the methane concentration spiking as the machine cuts into the coal (Figure 3–1) [Kissell et al. 1974]. Amino acids were investigated in conjunction with rare-earth separation by ion exchange to determine whether they can be utilized effectively as retaining agents for metals separation using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) eluant at 85° to 90° C. Hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid (REDTA) and diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) were the most effective amino acids investigated. Elements of atomic numbers 39 and 57 through 68 were effectively retained, whereas elements of atomic numbers 69 through 71 passed through the retaining-agent band. Utilization of REDTA or DTPA retaining agents allows an increase of 75 percent in the EDTA eluant concentration over that possible with hydrogen-or copper-retaining ions without precipitation occurring. Eighty-five percent recovery of the EDTA eluant collected before rare-earth breakthrough and during elution of lutetium, ytterbium, and thulium, and essentially complete recovery of the REDTA or DTPA retaining agents, are possible without extensive processing.

As part of its goal of maintaining an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines has studied the removal of iron from simulated aluminum nitrate leach liquors by solvent extraction. Iron must be removed from aluminum nitrate liquor produced by leaching calcined kaolinitic clay with HN03 to reduce the iron level in alumina to less than 0.02 wt-pct Fe203 for use in reduction cells. The parameters reported are for (1) extracting iron from a feed containing 1.5 g/l Fe with di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA), (2) stripping loaded organic phase with 20-pct HCI, and (3) water washing of loaded and stripped organic phase. Recommended operating conditions are two extraction stages using 15 vol-pct EHPA in kerosene and three stripping stages using 20-pct HCI. Results are also given for tests using other extractants and stripping agents.

To rapidly and dependably locate shorts and opens in mining equipment power cables. Approach: The approximate locations of faults are found using a sound pulse echo, then the faults are exactly located with one of two probes. How It Works: To approximately locate u fault in shielded or unshielded cable, the cable is disconnected from the mine power center, and connected to the sound pulse generator. The generator is also connected to the ground conductor of the cable. When the generator is energized, electrical pulses are transmitted, and each moves along the conductor until it reaches a fault. When a pulse reaches the fault an echo returns to the instrument, either a positive pulse if the fault is an open, or a negative pulse if the fault is a short. See Figure 1. The further along the cable the first fault is from the instrument, the longer it takes for the echo to return. The instrument automatically measures the time and calculates the distance. The distance in feet is shown on an illuminated digital display.

Compare the fire endurance of paneled steel stoppings with that of traditional concrete block Stoppings. Background Permanent stoppings or partitions arc used in mines to separate ventilation airways. The ability of stoppings to retain their structural integrity for a minimum length of time under lire conditions and prevent the spread of flame and toxic combustion products to an adjacent airway is critical. The success of miners in reaching safety during a fire depends largely on the presence of uncontaminated airways. Traditionally, permanent stoppings for coal mines are constructed of concrete blocks. Recently, paneled steel stoppings that satisfy many of the requirements demanded of permanent stoppings, such as incombustibility and strength, have been introduced. Their use also introduced concerns such as the ability of a steel stopping to maintain its ventilation control function when exposed to a fire and the potential that the fire could transmit enough heat through the stopping to ignite combustible materials on the unexposed side. To address these concerns, the Bureau of Mines investigated the fire endurance of galvanized steel and concrete block stoppings.

The origin of gaseous hydrocarbons in coal, predominantly methane, can be traced to the natural processes of coalification. The higher rank coals or the more deeply buried seams retain more gas than low rank coals or shallow seams. It is estimated that up to 460,000 cubic feet of all types of gases are produced during the formation of one ton of coal (Cervik, 1969). The chief components of these gaseous products are methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapor. Most of these gases escape during the various stages of decomposition but with eventual presence of overlying impermeable beds, there may be as much as 2,000 cubic feet of gas retained per ton of coal. Over geologic time, diffusion and other processes such as geologic disturbances in the earth's crust remove all but 500 to 2000 cubic feet of gas per ton of coal (Cervik, 1969). It is this residual methane which is of primary concern when mine openings are made in coal measures. Extensive data compiled by the United States Bureau of Mines reveal that some coal mines in this country emit up to 20 million cubic feet of methane per day (Spencer, 1970; Irani et al, 1972). Toxic, poisonous and respirable gaseous pollutants and explosive gases, predominantly methane, are injected into the ventilation stream from active sections and gobs. The liberation of methane in gob areas may, under certain circumstances, become extremely large. In some instances it may constitute up to 70 percent of the total yield of gas in a mine. 1. Introduction This document represents Part II of our final report on the development of a "Remote Sealing System for Extinguishing Coal Mine Fires. " It is a technical report which summarizes the results of system development and field demonstration. Part I of this two - part final report is an Operator's Manual for the application of the Remote Sealing System to a coal mine fire. 1.1 Background When coal mine fires go out of control and can no longer be fought directly, the standard fire fighting technique is to construct air-tight seals in the mine passages leading to the fire area so'--,that the oxygen supply to the fire is". cut off. Ultimately, it is desirable to isolate the fire zone in such a way that normal operations can resume in the remainder of the mine. The construction of seals in the- mine causes the atmosphere to pass through a toxic and explosive phase. Explosions, if they occur, are not only hazardous to the men working at the sealing operation, but can also undo much of the sealing work which has already been accomplished. Sealing of passageways surrounding the fire zone from within the mine is extremely difficult and dangerous. Methods for direct sealing are detailed in "Control of Mine Fires'. 1 An alternative to this approach is the technique of remote sealing. This involves drilling boreholes which intersect the mine passages at the locations where the desired seals are to be constructed. The seals are then constructed by pouring material down the borehole and filling a segment of the passage from bottom to top. During this operation, there are no personnel in the mine, all operations taking place on the ground surface.

Develop improved blasting practices that can help to curb overbreak in highwalls at surface mines, thereby reducing the hazards of rock-falls to workers and equipment, The Problem The serious hazard in surface mining is the falling of rock from highwalls. Poor highwall stability is caused in part by geologic conditions, but often is aggravated by faulty blasting practices, where the explosive energy not only fractures the rock to be excavated, but also damages the rock that borders the excavation. This reduces the general stability of the hlghwall and increases the rockfall potential. The probability of injury to mine workers or damage to equipment associated with exposure to the highwall increases with the height of the highwall and the extent of its overbreakage. Most rockfalls occur in the first 15 days after a new highwall is exposed. This statistic is significant since most of the work below a highwall is done during this period. The area of greatest hazard is within 25 ft of the toe for rocks that fall vertically, and up to 90 ft from the toe for falling rocks that are deflected by the highwall during their descent, The workers most frequently involved in such accidents are dozer operators, ground laborers, and shovel operators or oilers.

The bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory scale investigation of the process of selective flocculation with the objective of developing a method to effect separations on suspensions consisting predominately of ultra-fine-size (minus 400-mesh) particles of coal and refuse. Selective flocculation of coal from coal-refuse slurries could be achieved with a wide variety of reagents. Typically as much as 15 to 20 weight-percent of high-ash solids (70 to 80 percent ash) could be retained in suspension. The flocculated sediment remained a high-ash product, however, and would require further treatment to be regarded as clean coal. No combination of reagents and conditions led to selective flocculation of the refuse component. The dispersing agent was found to be the critical factor; dosages of 3 to 8 lb/ton2 were necessary to stabilize the suspension for subsequent selective flocculation. In addition, most of the dispersants that worked were most effective at substantially elevated pH (11 or so). It was concluded that this process would be prohibitively expensive and, because of yield and quality constraints, it would be of questionable utility in today's coal preparation industry.

Background Investigators collaborated to develop a new training module that would address the hazards of working around highwalls. Such a module would be applicable to surface mines and road construction sites, both of which require personnel to work under and on top of steep and often unstable slopes.

Ultimately, the most important product of a hearing conservation program is the prevention of hearing loss, not the amount of hearing protection that has been purchased or whether employees are attending their annual training sessions. Audiometric testing directly reveals whether hearing losses are actually occurring in a plant. With audiometric data, we can assess overall program effectiveness, alert workers of impending hearing loss, and reveal potential employer liabilities for compensable hearing loss. Without the ability to efficiently analyze audiometric data or produce effective reports, our programs become fruitless and unproductive. Consequently, ifaudiometric data are such vital end-products, then effective audiometric technologies serve as the prime architect and generator of these fundamental data. These technologies, consisting ofaudiometers, associated peripheral hardware, and database/reporting software, deserve our consideration.

The authors hypothesize that excavation-induced extension fractures are caused by elastic shearing displacement that in turn causes tension oblique to a propagating shear zone. Such extension is manifested as tension on scales larger than that of microcracks. En echelon fracture patterns are a common result. FLAC modeling confirmed that localized tension is created near the corners of mine openings. In the model, tension was concentrated at the leading edge of a simulated fracture in a pattern that could promote the formation of an en echelon fracture. Particle Flow Code models confirm progressive formation of en echelon tensile failures with distance from an opening. The elastic displacements and the resulting fractures facilitate reduction in applied load at the expense of shear deformation and lateral dilation. Understanding the mechanics of fracture and deformation is vital for designing more effective ground support practices, a major objective of ground control research being conducted at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Purchasing a new set of longwall shields requires a substantial investment. A poor shield design can lead to economic hardships, safety concerns for the mine workers, and closure of the mine. This paper addresses several key points that should be considered in the procurement process: (1) understanding your goals and the logic in selecting a higher capacity shield, (2) the importance of completing performance testing before production shield fabrication begins, (3) making sure performance testing is properly done, (4) measuring load(stress) development during performance testing, (5) testing a shield to failure, and (6) the value of buying extra shields. In addition, several challenges are proposed for consideration in future shield designs. These include (1) 100,000 life-cycle expectancy, (2) improved hydraulic diagnostic capability, (3) smart load control by optimizing setting pressures, (4) lubricated link joint design concepts, (5) composite material applications to reduce shield weight, (6) incorporating periodic weighting predictive algorithms into the data-processing software, (7) advanced component load measurement on two to three specially instrumented shields to detect loading in the structural components, and (8) constant set leg cylinder design.
