This report is issued by the Bureau of Mines as one of a series dealing with methods of increasing safety and efficiency in mining operations. It is intended purely as a preliminary statement of the present development of hydraulic mine filling as conducted in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania. A discussion of different methods, their variations and modifications, as well as their probable extension as a result of amplified tests of the various roof-supporting materials, will be presented in a future bulletin. The history of the development of the anthracite-mining industry, from the time when the Indian tribes in the Wyoming and Lacka- wanna Valleys first discovered the existence of "stone coal," on through subsequent events-the purchase of lands containing enor- mous deposits of coal for insignificant sums of money, the develop- ment of the first mine, the formation of the first company, the build- ing of canals and railroads-up to the present time when the industry has become of such tremendous importance to the prosperity of north- eastern Pennsylvania and of the Nation itself, is intersprinkled with romance, tragedy, and pathos. The great economic lessons to be learned from a study of mining operations in the anthracite region suggest to the person interested in the efficient utilization of natural resources the need of applying such methods as will make possible the conservation to posterity of this invaluable deposit of coal that has resulted from the operation of the processes of nature during probably hundreds of millions of years. It is the opinion of many prominent mining men familiar with mining operations in the United States and abroad that under certain conditions the most practical way of preventing loss of unmined coal in pillars and of protecting surface property from damage by sub- sidence is by filling the workings with refuse material. This bulletin aims to present a general discussion of hydraulic mine filling, its origin, development, and practicability in anthracite mining.

The following additional studies are recommended: 1. Future development of the magnetic sludge process should involve optimization of the process variables; these include stirring rate, sludge heating time, aeration rate, method of preliminary sludge dewatering, and the effects of magnetic separation for final sludge processing. In addition, the matter of amenability of coal mine waters to treatment should be considered more thoroughly by means of a more comprehensive literature review as well as actual tests on mine drainage samples. 2. The technique of sludge freezing should be explored further. Emphasis should be given to conservation of energy in the process, and the filtration characteristics of the resulting sludges should be evaluated. 3. Further studies should be conducted on the feasibility of the CO2-addition approach to mine drainage sludge densification. The filtration characteristics of product sludges should be evaluated, and the possibility of recovering and recycling the residual alkalinity of the sludge, either directly as CaCO3 or as CaO plus CO2 after calcination, should also be explored further. 4. Efforts should be made to develop cost data for the conceptual processes involving magnetic sludge formation, sludge freezing, and C02 pretreatment, with the purpose of selecting at least one of these processes for further testing at a field site. 5. The use of inexpensive waste materials (e.g. fly ash, "red dog," slag) as sludge additives, possibly in conjunction with coagulant aids, should be considered further. Results of the present studies have indicated that such materials, employed in relatively large amounts, increase the density and enhance the filterability of sludges from lime neutralization of coal mine drainage. The use of pulverized blast furnace slag in this regard appears particularly promising, and studies should be made to ascertain its availability, relative cost, residual alkalinity, and behavior as an additive in conventional mine drainage treatment processes involving lime neutralization and aeration.

1. In 2003, a total of 734 nonmetal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Examples of nonmetal mining operations include, but are not limited to, the mining of clay, shale, barite, potash, trona, phosphate rock, rock salt, gypsum, talc, gemstones, mica, perlite, and pumice. • Nonmetal mines comprised 5.1% of all mining operations. • Nonmetal mining operations are located in all states and territories except Alaska, Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. • Mines producing common clay comprised 28.6% (n = 210) of all nonmetal mining operations.

The Blackbird district, Lemhi County, Idaho, has long been recognized as a potential source of cobalt and copper. Exploration of the early discoveries in the area was largely discouraged by the comparatively low grade and small size of the known ore bodies, the slight demand for cobalt, and the lack of adequate roads throughout the region. Recent advances in the field of alloy metallurgy culminated in a steadily expanding demand for cobalt. This demand was finally accentuated to critical proportions in 1940 by worldwide rearmament programs and by the threatened disruption of foreign imports by submarine warfare.

A summary is presented of existing leaky feeder communications systems currently in operation in North America. Background information pertaining to previous use of leaky feeder technology is discussed along with the survey methodology. A review of some pertinent facts concerning propagation in tunnels and specific reference to mine tunnel propagation is presented. A summary of the characteristics of each mine visited is presented in tabular form, and methods of procurement and maintenance are discussed. The role of user training in efficient system use is presented. Seven sites representing eight mines are included in the survey. Economic and technical topics are considered.

Louisiana is one of the major oil-producing States of the country. Commercial production of crude oil in the State began in 1902 and has increased to an estimated output of 157,409,000 barrels in 1945, which is the maximum production up to this time and places the State fourth in the nation. The cumulative production for Louisiana through 1944 is 1,544,481,000 barrels, and, adding the output for 1945, the total to January 1, 1946, is 1,681,890,000 barrels. Data on annual production of crude oil in Louisiana and tentative statistics for 1945 are given in table 1. The large production of crude oil in Louisiana and the present trend to utilize petroleum in accordance with its general characteristics make it increasingly important to present analytical data for crude oils. This report is the fifth of a series presenting such data obtained on crude oils from Louisiana according to the procedure used by the Bureau of Mines. Individual analyses are given for 82 samples from 64 fields; many of the samples are from recently discovered fields, and some are from new producing formations.

Unusual circumstances may require that a longwall retreat into or through a previously driven room. The operation can be completed successfully, but there have been a number of spectacular failures which exposed miners to serious roof fall hazards. To help determine what factors contribute to such failures. the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) compiled a comprehensive international database of 130 case histories. The cases include five failures where major rock falls occurred in front of the shields, and six even more serious failures involving major overburden weighting. This suggests two room failure mechanisms The first is a roof fall type failure caused by loading of the immediate roof at the face as the fender narrows. The second is a weighting type failure caused by the inability of the roof to bridge the recovery room and face area, and affecting rock well above the immediate roof The data indicate that the roof fall type of failure is less likely when intensive roof reinforcement (bolts, cables, and trusses) is employed together with higher-capacity shields The overburden weighting failures, in contrast, occurred when the roof was weak and little standing support was used

The existence of vast deposits of lignite in the West Central and Western States is well known, although the extent and importance of the deposits have not been appreciated, nor has there been an adequate economic utilization of the deposits. The work of the Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological Survey, and the State geological surveys is disclosing an increasingly large area, underlaid with this kind of coal. Among the States having the largest workable deposits may be mentioned North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Texas, and in several other Western States lignite occurs in smaller areas. In North Dakota alone it is estimated that the deposits cover approximately 32,000 square miles, many of them being 10 to 15 feet thick and capable of producing in all several hundred billions of tons of lignite. When one stops to consider what these figures mean as to the immensity of these deposits in the West, it is not strange that people are seeking to ascertain better means for deriving larger benefits from the proper utilization of those great deposits. Consequently, any proposed methods of utilization that are promising are well worthy of careful consideration.

This study is intended to serve three roles. First, it represents a global overview and summary to supplement and complement the five regional companion volumes of the 1991 edition of the Minerals Yearbook International Review. In this regard, it also extends previous time series under this title that appeared as the introductory chapter to the international volume of the Minerals Yearbook from the inception of that volume in 1963 until it was subdivided into separate regional volumes in 1989. The basic statistical presentations herein generally contain data through and including that for 1991, although in a few instances the most recent statistics are those for earlier years because more recent, comprehensive global statistics simply are not yet available owing to delays in data collection and processing in some countries and continued governmental suppression of data in others. The second role of this study is to provide an update to the coverage of events impacting the world's mineral industry that have occurred between the end of 1991 and the preparation of this study. Inclusion of this update is almost essential because of the potential effect of some of these events on global mineral industry activities.

Reduce dust on long wall faces by using a gob curtain to lower air leakage Into the gob and raise the airflow along the face. Approach A brattice curtain (gob curtain) Is hung between shield #1 and the rib in the headgate entry forcing the ventilating air stream to make the 90° turn and stay on the face side of the shields rather than leaking into the gob. How It Works Air leakage is greatest in the headgate area because the gob behind the first few shields remains open due to the roof bolts in the headgate entry. In addition to the open gob, there is a large gap between shield #1 and the rib. Prevention of air leakage behind the shields is accomplished by the Installation of a curtain between the first shield and the rib extending from the roof to the bottom. The curtain Is advanced with the shield line each pass and is helpful In maintaining a sufficient air quantity along the face. The biggest Improvement due to this curtain is seen in the first 25-30 shields where the Increased air volume lowers dust concentrations through dilution.

A thermal oil-recovery experiment was conducted in the Venango First sand, Goodwill Hill oilfield, Warren County, Pa., about 10 miles northeast of Titusville. The Quaker State Oil Refining Corp., Bradford, Pa., performed the experiment with assistance from Sinclair Research, Inc., Tulsa, Okla., and the Federal Bureau of Mines. The Goodwill Hill field was discovered in 1885. Primary-production oper- ations continued until 1930 when an air-gas injection project, which is still in operation, was started. At the location of the combustion experiment, the reservoir is 400 feet deep and 30 feet thick, with wide permeability and porosity variations. The crude oil is typical Pennsylvania Grade paraffin- base oil with a gravity of 43.9° API and a viscosity of 4.55 cp at 60° F. The well pattern for the experiment consisted of 5 producing wells, enclosing an area of 1.28 acres, and a central ignition-injection well. An air-natural gas mixture was ignited in the ignition well on July 29, 1961. Ignition was followed by injection of air and natural gas at various rates. The experiment was suspended January 5, 1962, when it became evident that economic oil production could not be achieved. There was no conclusive evidence that self-sustained combustion was achieved or that combustion increased oil and water production. A slight increase in liquid production was attributed to stripping action caused by the air-injection rates, which were higher than those normally used during air-gas injection.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research with the objective of preventing hearing loss in the mining industry. Longwall mining is one sector that has received considerable attention. Studies involving the monitoring of worker noise exposures, characterizing equipment sound levels and dominant noise sources, evaluating engineering noise controls, analyzing hearing protection device (HPD) effectiveness, and testing of improved sound level monitoring techniques specifically for longwall mining systems, are being conducted. The research efforts revealed that stageloader operators are the most exposed longwall workers, with the discharge end being the noisiest location along the stageloader. In addition, the studies have shown that using stationary dosimeters, coupled with observational data of the cutting cycle and worker habits, has the potential for improved monitoring of the effectiveness of engineering noise controls. To address the ineffective use of soft foam earplugs, a simplified 3-step method was developed for inserting soft foam earplugs. Results indicate a 9 dB greater attenuation after training subjects on the 3-step method. Finally, muff type HPDs are being evaluated for effects of speech intelligibility in noise. The combined results of these studies illustrates that much can and has been done to prevent noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in the mining industry, especially with respect to longwall mining workers. This paper presents an overview of ongoing studies, a progress report of results, and the implications for reducing worker noise exposures and preventing NIHL in longwall mining workers.

A critical study of the wet Thiogen process for extracting sulphur from the smoke of smelters is one of several investigations related to the general smelter-smoke problem that are being conducted under the direction of the Bureau of Mines. Part of the work done in the pyrometallurgical section of the cooperative metallurgical exhibit of the Bureau of Mines at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition during 1915 related to this investigation, and at the expiration of the exposition, the work was continued in the labora- tories of the Bureau of Mines in the Hearst Memorial Mining Building of the University of California, Berkeley, Cal., where a mining experiment station of the bureau has been established under the cooperative agreement with the University of California. Early in the spring of 1915, when plans were being made to co- operate with several metallurgical interests, the Thiogen Co. proposed to the Bureau of Mines that, along with the studies of various pro- posed methods for eliminating sulphur dioxide from smelter smoke, there should be included a study of the wet Thiogen process. In the study as outlined it was proposed to determine whether it would be technically and commercially feasible to use the, process for the recovery of elemental sulphur from the sulphur dioxide in waste smelter gases. Although there had been no large-scale work with the process, either in the laboratory or at a smelter, representatives of the metallur- gical and mining industry had shown considerable interest in the proposed method, and the desire had been expressed that a better knowledge of the possibilities of the process should be obtained. Thus, cooperation with the Thiogen Co. seemed justified by the in- terests of the metallurgical industry, and by the conservation promised by the recovery of a product of market value from what is otherwise a waste, and in some instances a serious nuisance. In accepting the responsibility for directing this investigation, the officials of the Bureau of Mines were necessarily free to conduct the work in the manner they considered necessary to determine the facts. It was also understood that any information obtained was to be made available to all who might be interested and might be printed in a Bureau of Mines report. To cover the cost of laboratory equipment and supplies, and the payment of salaries of assistants, other than Bureau of Mines employees, the Thiogen Co. in May, 1915, deposited with the cooperative metallurgical exhibit fund a sum considered sufficient to warrant starting the laboratory investi- gation. The origin and organization of this fund has been described by Clevenger and the author." In outlining the program for this investigation it was hoped that ultimately a small complete plant would be erected and the investi- gation center around the operation of the plant. However, pre- liminary to the erection of the plant, a laboratory study of the proc- ess was considered necessary, as the technical features of the process could be determined, it was believed, as satisfactorily on a smaller scale as on the scale first proposed. However, it was realized at the time that it would not be possible to determine so satisfactorily or definitely the commercial possibilities of the process on the scale of work adopted as in the larger operating plant. With this fact in mind it was planned that, if the study of the technical features on a laboratory scale gave sufficient promise of the process being commer- cially feasible, an operating unit should, if possible, be constructed later, and that more definite information concerning the commercial prospects should be determined. The investigations were started in June, 1915. In June and July work was confined entirely to small-scale laboratory tests, in which a careful study of the chemical reactions involved was made. In August, tests on a larger scale were started, and these were con- tinued until December, small-scale tests being made at the same time. On December 1, 1915, all work on the Thiogen process was discon- tinued temporarily, as the close of the exposition necessitated moving the laboratories. Work on the Thiogen process was started again in January, 1916, in the laboratories of the new mining experiment sta- tion at Berkeley, Cal., and was continued during the spring of 1916 until a point was reached where it was felt that the essential parts of the process had been carefully covered, and that some definite state- ments concerning the technical features and possibilities of the process, as given in this report, were warranted.

A standard Ford1 4600 agricultural tractor was converted to remote control to perform ASAE/SAE field upset tests (rear rollover and side rollover). This paper discusses the engineering process to develop a remote-controlled tractor in determining the critical parameters of operation, to choosing appropriate actuators, designing the circuitry to control them, installing the actuators on the tractor, testing the system for functionality and then conducting numerous overturn tests. The system uses off-the-shelf components for simplicity, replaceability, and economic concerns. The remote control system has withstood 21 tests to date with no failures and will continue to be used for at least three more years of testing.

Efficiently clear ice and frozen materials from ore-handling equipment. Approach Compressed air-propane torches that develop a high energy flame jet were used instead of ordinary propane torches. How it Works A high velocity high temperature stream of gases impinges on the ice and frozen materials to both melt and blast them away. A new phone system was developed that provides eight full duplex communications channels over a single twisted shielded phone line, with no central switching station or line amplifiers. This system greatly simplifies installation and maintenance over that required with conventional switching systems. The system is based on microprocessor technology and digital frequency synthesis. Frequency division multiplexing is used over a bandwidth of approximately 300 kHz, and a baseband voice channel (compatible with conventional pager phones) is provided as a backup to assure communication if the multiplex features fail. Multiplex operations are controlled over a 30-kHz digital channel. The system is designed to operate with up to 16 km (10 miles) of cable plant and a maximum phone separation of 8 km (5 miles). The digital techniques permit a limited amount of monitoring and control capability to each phone. This consists of two pair of contact inputs or outputs, to be used as desired. These "flags" may be read or controlled by a dispatcher's phone.

This method is similar to the reduction of dolomite by ferrosilicon, in that it does not require the direct use of electrical energy; like ferrosilicon, the calcium carbide must be produced in an electric furnace, so that the reducing agent in both processes may be considered in some respects as “stored” electrical energy. The reduction of magnesium chloride by calcium carbide is exothermic, takes place rapidly at ordinary pressure and at relatively low temperatures, and can be carried out in ordinary steel equipment, whereas the reduction of dolomite by ferrosilicon and the carbothermic reduction of magnesium oxide are endothermic, require high temperatures, and present serious problems with respect to materials of construction. Because of its apparent simplicity and other advantages, the Bureau of Mines has briefly investigated the reduction of magnesium chloride by calcium carbide. Published data on the reduction of magnesium chloride by calcium carbide are meager. Matignon states that reduction is fairly rapid at 1,200º C. Matsuura claims that magnesium chloride is not reduced by calcium carbide at atmospheric pressure and 800º C; however, by keeping the pressure under 10 mm. of mercury he was able to obtain small globules of magnesium at 800º C.

A. 4 Illustrative Simulations The capabilities of the program are demonstrated by simulating various evacuation cases in different situations for a particular mine. The mine selected for the illustrative simulations is the mine I C' , as described in Section 2, chosen particularly because of availability of mine characteristic data and mine evacuation results for test drills. These evacuation results can be used to verify validity of the predictions made by the program A.4 1 Mine Characteristics A schematic diagram of the mine is shown in Figure 19. The figure shows all the major shafts, drifts, raises and stopes of the mine in the form of a network. There are four hoists, Hoist No. 1 and Hoist No. 2 are assumed to be single drum hoists and Hoists Nos. 3 and 4 form part of a double drum hoist, with Hoist No. 4 being the main hoist (master hoist) The positions of the 133 miners, typically working in a day shift of the mine, are also shown in the figure. The miners are identified by a miner number, and their total number on each level is chosen from the data on the fire drill simulated as Case No. 1 in the illustrative simulations.

 This paper describes the method used and results obtained in testing a hand-fired down-draft furnace at a plant in Washington, D. C., in order to determine the method of firing that would give the best results with a minimu of smoke. The smoke regulations of the District of Columbia are very rigid, and are well enforced, A paragraph of the ordinance relating to furnaces other than household, reads, "The emission of dense or thick black or gray smoke or cinders from any smokestack or chimney 113ed in connection with any stationary engine, steam boiler, or furnace of any description within the District of Columbia shall be deemed, and is hereby declared, to be a public nuisance". This ordinance, if literally enforced, would eliminate all ordinary hand-fired grates and furnace combinations where coal other then anthracite is used. However, in several Gov- ernment plants where hand-firing of coal is still necessary conditions have been satisfactorily met by installing the down-draft type of furnace. In these plants, as at all hand-fired plants, considerable difference in operating details and methods is found. The firemen are paid day laborer's wages and are often inexperienced. The instructions of the furnace makers fre- quently do not appeal to the firemen, and are not closely followed, This is partly due to the necessity of running the boilers continuously at much higher ratings than were intended by the manufacturer. Tests were made on a Hawley furnace of this type to improve the methods of firing, particularly at the higher ratings.

This paper summarizes the results of a research project whose goal was to provide the Australian coal industry with a chain pillar design methodology readily usable by colliery staff. The project was primarily funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program and further supported by several Australian longwall operations. The starting point or basis of the project was the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) methodology. ALPS was chosen because of its operational focus; it uses tailgate performance as the determining chain pillar design criterion rather than simply pillar stability. Furthermore, ALPS recognizes that several geotechnical and design factors, including (but not limited to) chain pillar stability, affect that performance. There are some geotechnical and mine layout differences between United States and Australian coal fields that required investigation and, therefore, calibration before the full benefits offered by the ALPS methodology could be realized in Australia. Ultimately, case history data were collected from 19 longwall mines representing approximately 60% of all Australian longwall operations. In addition, six monitoring sites incorporated an array of hydraulic stress cells to measure the change in vertical stress throughout the various phases of the longwall extraction cycle. The sites also incorporated extensometers to monitor roof and rib performance in response to the retreating longwallface. The study found strong relationships between the tailgate stability factor, the Coal Mine Roof Rating, and the installed level of primary support. The final outcome of the project is a chain pillar design methodology called Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability (ALTS). Guidelines for using ALTS are provided.
