Over the last decade significant development and use has been made of a simulation model that describes the HCFeMn smelting operations in Assmang Ltd. This spreadsheet based, semi-empirical, predictive model is derived from data from the submerged arc furnaces at Assmang?s Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal smelter site. Departures from the empirical base case mass balance due to changes in the ores, reductant feeds and operating parameters are accounted for by use of fundamental relationships and heuristic type ratios which are applied in an iterative manner in the model. The model performs a sequential set of calculations to iteratively converge on a fully consistent mass and energy balance solution, which predicts Mn alloy and slag output masses and compositions for a given set of feeds. 440 MWh per operating day is used as the basis of energy input. The paper describes the key model components, assumptions made and calculation approach. Added to the mass and energy balance is a cost and revenue balance, which allows prediction of the economic performance for each simulation. Substantial use of the model has been made in simulating the performance of the current Assmang HCFeMn furnaces for both smelter investigations and future production planning. The model has also been a valuable tool in the strategic analysis of the use of future Mn ores and has formed the vital link between mine ore grades (metal and slag elements) and the expected alloy output, grade and profitability. Additionally, the model has been used in benchmarking exercises to predict other Mn smelting operations with remarkable accuracy. The paper highlights some aspects of the approaches taken in using the model to benchmark Assmang?s own furnace performance and cost competitiveness with other producers. For Assmang the development and application of this modelling technology has led to transformation in understanding of the Assmang HCFeMn furnace operations and increased awareness of the potential of its Mn ore bodies.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African mining industry with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently, the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel (and possibly more pressing) need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. Chronic shortages in these essential areas continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to meet the needs of the South African mining industry in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

The nature of the density distribution in a gas-solid phase fluidized bed for dry coal separation is an important factor in influencing the performance. However, during coal processing, fine slime would mix with dense medium of magnetite powder and accumulate in the bed, and its influence will affect the density of the bed. The mathematical model of the density distribution with fine slime behaviour was studied in an experimental laboratory system. The functional relationship between the density of the air dense medium fluidized bed and the coal slime content were fitted, applying the principle of least-squares method with damping factors. With the model, by analysing the trial testing data, the mechanism of the density distribution of the bed was studied and applied to a coal separation test with a pilot scale separator. To investigate the influence of orientation of crystal lattice on the bacterial leaching of pyrite crystals, single crystals of 100, 111 and110 plane orientations were used for the study. Experiments were carried out in the presence of a Thiobacillus ferrooxidans culture. The different corrosion patterns observed on the surfaces of the bioleached samples suggests a variation in cell-surface interaction from one crystal plane to the other. The surface corrosion patterns generally reflected the influence of the symmetrical arrangement of the atomic planes in the lattice on which they formed. The results indicate that the surface properties of mineral sulphides may control the evolution of corrosion patterns and consequently the initial oxidation process in acid bacterial leaching.

The coal-based power generation industry faces increased pressure from all sectors to improve its environmental performance. This is due to increased awareness of and concerns regarding greenhouse-and acid-gas emissions, toxic metal releases (to both air and water) and water availability. A methodology to assess this industry?s environmental performance is needed. Such a methodology should assess all environmental impacts accurately, recognizing the irspatial and temporal dependence, and taking into account the social acceptability of technologies employed. Here, we develop a methodology to determine the environ-mental impact associated with solid wastes generated by this industry, and apply this to the specific case of ash management. More specifically, the case study compares the environmental footprint of an ash deposit for a number of operational water management scenarios. The methodology considers leachate generation processes from ash impoundments to obtain a time-dependent concentration profile of mobile constituents at the interface between the ash impoundment and the surrounding environment. This leachate prediction modelling is subsequently linked to plume dispersion modelling tools to determine the fate and transport of leached components, predominantly salts, into groundwater. Together, these provide a measure of the extent to which a land mass is affected by leachate migration from the deposit. To determine the exact boundary between regions of acceptable and unacceptable risk to the environment, we use Ecological Risk Assessment concepts. In this way it is possible to obtain a time dependent affected land footprint which could be used as an indicator of the environmental impact of solid waste management practices. This information can be included in a set of environmental criteria which form the basis of an overall environ-mental impact assessment, using tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The value of LCA is that its structure is consistent with accepted models of environmental decision making, where different approaches to valuation in impact assessment assist in prioritizing impacts on the basis of their perceived significance. The proposed ?affected land footprint? metric represents a significant improvement over current LCA impact indicators for solid waste management practices. Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.

A simulated rockburst was conducted underground at Kopanang Mine, previously called Vaal Reefs No. 9 Shaft. The rockburst was simulated by means of a large blast detonated in solid rock close to a crosscut sidewall. The simulated rockburst involved the design of the seismic source, seismic observations in the near and far field, high-speed video filming, a study of rock mass conditions such as fractures, joints, rock strength etc. Knowledge of the site conditions before and after the simulated rockburst was also gained. Some of the important findings are listed below: ?Two areas of damage were identified on the blasting wall: (i) an area of high-intensity damage in which ground velocities of 3.3 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer, which was subsequently ejected in a block of rock, (ii) an area of low-intensity damage where ground velocities of 1.6 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer which remained on the tunnel wall. ?High-speed filming revealed rock fragments being ejected from the wall at velocities in the range of 0.6 m/s to 2.5 m/s. The measurements were taken in the area of low-intensity damage. As planned, no gas pressure was directly involved in damaging the wall of the tunnel. ?The attenuation of peak particle velocities for the main blast in the near field (6 m to 30 m), as a function of distance R, was found to be proportional to R-1.7. ?The simulated rockburst was recorded as a local magnitude ML= 1.3 by the Klerksdorp regional seismic network. ?Peak particle velocities from nearby blasting, recorded on the tunnel wall after the simulated rockburst, were about six times greater then peak particle velocities recorded from the same source area before the simulated rockburst.

"The consequences of ineffective mine closure in South Africa are evident from the number of abandoned mines and operations on extended care-and-maintenance, the on-selling of mines to less well-resourced companies to close, and increasing illegal mining activities. However, the data to substantiate these observations and provide insight into the underlying issues has not been available. Through the Promotion of Access to Information Act, a list of mine closure certificates applied for between 2011 and 2016 and a list of certificates granted over the same period for all nine regions of South Africa was obtained. From the analysis of this data, we show that the mine closure system as implemented in South Africa is largely ineffective. Although closure certificates are being granted, these are for prospecting sites and small-scale mines, which have a relatively small environmental impact. No large mines of any environmental significance were relinquished over the period under review, with very few applying for closure certificates. Furthermore, the issuing of closure certificates varies significantly between regional offices, with the success rate for applications being generally low and issuing of certificates taking an extended period. IntroductionThere are a number of concerns with the mine closure process as practiced in South Africa, and these have largely been laid at the door of government. Alberts et al. (2017) stress that the legislation generally conforms to international best practice. However, the system is ‘complex and unwieldy’, involving various pieces of legislation and different government departments with overlapping requirements and different interpretations of the law. A further area of concern is the capacity and competence of government to implement legislation. The ‘shortage of relevant mine closure skills and knowledge within the regulator’ was identified by van Druten and Bekker (2017) as a key contributor to unsuccessful closure. Lack of capacity and resources within the regulator has also been highlighted by Botham, Kelso, and Annegarn (2011) and Milaras, McKay, and Ahmed (2014). A recent study of the mineral application process by Corruption Watch (2017) indicates that positions in the regulator have been frozen for many years, leading to a shortage of staff, and that unqualified individuals have been appointed. There is also the perceived reluctance of government to grant closure in order to limit transfer of the liability to the state and delay the inevitable job losses."

CSIRO Mineral has recently developed a new electron microprobe based system for characterizing zircon grains from heavy minerals sand deposits. The system acquires cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra, X-ray and backscattered electron (BSE) signals in parallel. By scanning over a specified target area, CL wavelength and X-ray element distribution maps of polished zircon grains can be acquired. Post-inspection of the combined dataset using in-house developed software enables correlations between chemistry and structure to be investigated. The new method offers significant benefits over traditional CL and BSE techniques in that direct comparison with the elemental concentrations over the same region is now achievable. By combining the electron microprobe results with data for the same mapped region obtained via a nuclear microprobe, significantly better detection limits (~ 1ppb) for elements with atomic numbers greater than iron are possible. The ability to measure spatially related analytical data and then investigate the correlation of the CL spectra with chemical data is an important advancement in the characterization of zircons. It is well known that the electrochemical precipitation of metals from aqueous solutions is conducted by the electrochemical standard potential scale. This scale indicates the order of nobility of different metals. Consequently, the standard potential scale shows the nocivity of metals when they are present as impurities in aqueous solutions containing metals. In the hydrometallurgy of cobalt, nickel and zinc are co-deposited during cobalt electrodeposition. Nickel has almost the same chemical, physical and electro-chemical properties as cobalt. Furthermore, the electrochemical potential of nickel is relatively higher than that of cobalt. For this reason nickel is preferentially reduced at the cathode in the presence of cobalt. The presence of small amounts of zinc in solution leads to contamination of cobalt electrowon. In spite of its lower electrochemical potential in comparison to cobalt, zinc is reduced on the cathode because of its higher hydrogen-overvoltage. But, in the hydrometallurgy of zinc, small amounts of cobalt present solution will contaminate the zinc reduced at the cathode. This is easily explained by the fact that cobalt is more electropositive than zinc. The co-deposition mechanism of sulphur at the cathode is not yet well understood. Great attention has to be paid to the mechanism of co-deposition of sulphur during cobalt electrolysis. This work aimed to investigate the influence of some parameters on the co-deposition of nickel, zinc and sulphur during cobalt electrowinning. The following parameters have been investigated: Co2+concentration in the electrolyte, current density and ammonium sulphate (NH4)2SO4additions. It has been established that important nickel, zinc and sulphur co-deposition takes place at relatively low Co2+ concentration in solution. The behaviour of these elements with regard to the cathodic phenomena has been established.

The effect of carbon material properties on the rate of MnO reduction from ferromanganese slag by solid graphite was investigated. A sessile drop technique was used to study the reduction rate of a synthetic slag containing 45 wt% MnO at 1500 and 1600 ºC. Different types of graphite substrates were used and the con-tact angle between slag droplets and substrate were measured in-situ. Moreover, the slag droplet volume during the interaction with the graphite substrates was calculated and normalised. The mathematical relationship between the slag density during the reduction and the normalised slag droplet volumes during the reduction were derived and the MnO reduction curves were then calculated. A method for measuring the slag reactivity of solid carbon was defined and used to qualify the propensity of the different graphites to react with the liquid slag. Some supplementary studies such as manganese evaporation measurement and EPMA analysis for determining the extent of MnO reduction were also carried out. It was observed that there is nota significant difference in the wetting angle of the graphite substrates by the slag, and the wetting is not changed within the temperature range of 1500-1600ºC. However, the changes in the contact angle during the slag reduction at 1600ºC are more than at 1500ºC. The kinetics of MnO reduction is dependent on the type of graphite and it is more dependent on the graphite properties at lower temperatures. On the other hand, the dominant properties of graphite on the reduction rate vary with temperature. A multivariate analysis on the graphite properties and the parameters related to the slag reactivity indicated that the kinetics of MnO reduction is mainly dependent on the temperature, and then on the graphite properties. It was also found that at1500 ºC the surface area and the CO2 reactivity are the most important graphite properties for the slag reduction, suggesting that the reactivity of carbon is rate controlling at 1500 ºC. However, the porosity related parameters are the most important graphite properties at 1600 ºC, suggesting that CO gas desorption is rate controlling at high temperatures.

After a brief description of the structure of these technologies? development under COMRO?s stewardship, the paper turns to an overview of the structure of innovation within which these hydraulic technologies were developed. A central focus of this paper is systematic review on whether similar technologies are likely to emerge in the present system of innovation and the role played by innovation policy.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) offers a core first-year engineering design and innovation course, ENGG1000, undertaken during the first and second semesters. This course is highly regarded in the sense that it provides an introduction to many concepts and activities that students will experience over the four-year minimum for which they are undergraduates at UNSW. Approximately 1400 students enrol in the semester 1 course across the Faculty, typically 80 of which undertake the Mining Engineering stream. Students in teams of between six and eight design and construct a physical model to represent an aspect of their chosen discipline. For example, in 2013 the mining engineers designed and built a model dragline. This paper concentrates a major aspect of the course ? the involvement of team members in group activities and the development of the associated skills of peer assessment and peer review as the course progresses over a period of 12 weeks. The term ?peer assessment? in this paper refers to the requirement for students to assess the design components of their peers. This course has a structured requirement in terms of how a successful design is a result of a sound design process rather than a ?try and see? approach. Each student must describe in detail the process they undertook to achieve their final design ? hence the approach is independent of the discipline and/or project selected. Peer review is a process whereby students review the contribution of their team members to the overall design. This activity encourages team involvement and interaction. The final assessment mark can be moderated by the outcome of this peer review, although it is run twice during the semester. The first ?run? is for feedback only during week six and hence no moderation is undertaken. It was found through consultation with students and from questionnaires that both processes are well accepted and highly regarded by students, as they give them a degree of ownership of the assessment process. In addition, the processes provide rapid and relevant feedback on the progress of individual students. Peer review and peer assessment are also considered to be very valuable tools for use in courses in succeeding years. For instance, many of the courses in mining engineering rely heavily on group assessment tasks.

X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is a nondestructive imaging technique, and its efficiency is widely recognized. In the present paper, X-ray CT is successfully applied for the visualization of water permeation process in rock. A new experimental technique using a tracer, which mainly consists of Potassium Iodide (KI), is proposed, together with the analysis method of the velocity field. The permeation process and the velocity field in rock are concretely visualized and analyzed by considering the conservation of mass of the tracers. La tomographie calculée aux rayons X est une technique de la prise d'images non-destructive et son efficacité est largement reconnue. Dans le présent exposé, la tomographie calculée aux rayons X Radio est appliquée avec succès à la visualisation du procédé de perméation de l'eau dans la roche. Une nouvelle technique expérimentale, se servant d'un identificateur principalement constitué d'iodure de potassium (KI), est proposée avec la méthode de l'analyse du champ des vitesse. Le procédé de perméation et le champ des vitesse dans la roche sont visualisés concrètement et analysés en considérant la conservation de masse des identificateurs. Röntgen-Computer-Tomografie (CT) ist eine nicht-destruktive Bildverarbeitungstechnik, deren Effizienz weit anerkannt ist. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird Röntgen-CT erfolgreich für die visuelle Darstellung des Wasser-Durchdringungsvorgangs im Fels eingesetzt. Eine neue experimentelle Technit mit einem Tracer, der hauptsächlich aus Kaliumiodid (KI) besteht, wird vorgeschlagen, zusammen mit der Analysemethode des Geschwindigkeitsfelds. Der Durchdringungsprozess und das Geschwindigkeitsfeld im Fels werden konkret visualisiert und analysiert, wobei die Bewahrung der Masse des Tracers berücksichtigt wird.

ABSTRACT: The use of coal pillars at depth is fraught with problems due roof control difficulties and the possible occurrence of coal or pillar bumps. In the USA the largest and most important application of pillars at depth is in longwalling, where chain pillars are the customary supports of the multiple entry developments. At first, the chain pillars were designed using conventional approaches, where the principle is that the strength of the pillar should exceed the load imposed on it. Such approach to design led to larger and larger pillars at great depths, but instead of eliminating, it tended to aggravate the roof control problems. Eventually the idea was born that small sized yielding pillars, which have proved to be successful elsewhere, might provide the answer to this pressing problem as well. The aim of this paper is to study the modes of pillar failure at great depths, using two solution methods. The first of these comprises some elementary solutions obtained with the aid of a simplified conceptualization of the rock mass. This model consists of a strain-softening coal seam sandwiched between two stratified masses. The second approach utilizes FLAC3D, which is a commercially available three-dimensional numerical modeling software package. To gain a better insight, both the strain-softening and ideally plastic Mohr-Coulomb constitutive laws embodied in FLAC3D were exploited. As expected, the width to height ratio of the pillar has proved to be the primary factor that determined the behavior of the pillars. Narrow pillars fail in a stable manner without the occurrence of instabilities. Intermediate w/h ratio pillars under the appropriate loading conditions, may fail suddenly and may even collapse totally. Squat pillars do show the potential for sudden, coal bump like side failure, but because the remaining large width of the inner core, the ruble around the pillar provides sufficient confinement so as to reestablish stability. Finally, the study revealed that the traditional Mohr-Coulomb law does not provide a useful insight into the failure of coal pillars. RESUME: L’utilisation des piliers de charbon dans les mines souterraines de grande profondeur occasionne des problèmes due aux difficultés de control de plafond et possibles fracture ou explosions au niveau des piliers. Aux Etats-Unies d’Amérique, l’utilisation des piliers dans les mines souterraines de charbon comme moyen de support est considèrees comme étant la plus grande et la plus importantes des méthodes utilisée dans le ‘’ longwalling method’’ ou une série des piliers sont disposé de manière à supporter les multiple entrées d’exploitation de charbon. En premier lieu, cette série des piliers étaient construit de manière conventionnelle avec un principe basé sur le fait que le poids exerce sur les piliers doit être inférieur a la force que ces piliers exerce sur le plafond. Ce principe a conduit a ce que le volume des piliers augmente au fur et à mesure que la profondeur au de la mine augmente. Malheureusement, au lieu de résoudre le problème de support, ce principe n’a fait qu’aggraver le problème de contrôle de plafond. Eventuellement une idée s’est dégagé allant du fait que les piliers endommagés de taille moyenne qui se sont avérés être efficaces ailleurs, pourraient fournir un indice à ce particulier problème. Le but de cette recherche est celui d’étudier les différent types de ruptures qu’un pilier peut occasionner lorsqu’il est utilisé a grande profondeur, tout en utilisant deux possible méthodes. La première d’entre elle comprend quelques solutions élémentaires obtenues avec l’aide d’une méthode simplifié et conceptuelle de la masse de la roche. Ce modèle consiste à prendre en sandwich la bande de minerais de charbon entre deux masses stratigraphiques sans pour autant endommager le plafond. Globally, the trend in shaft sinking is to use the shock tube and detonating cord (STDC) initiation system, with value adding benefits. In pursuing this global trend, Cementation Mining of South Africa in partnership with SMX have ventured the STDC route. This paper explores the work carried out to date, and identifies a number of benefits to be gained by using the system.

Abstract Between the German city of Dresden and the Czech capital Prague a 4-lane highway is under con-struction. At the outskirts of Dresden it will cross the narrow and deeply eroded Weißeritz Valley by a bridge. Two twin tube tunnels under oblique angles join the bridge out of the rocky valley flanks. The different geotechnical conditions of these 4 tunnel portals, their design and construction are described within this publication. The two southern portals of the tunnel Dölzschen are situated within a vertical 65 m high former quarry slope, 25 m above the valley floor. The slope proved instable due to toppling failure and exposed serious rockfall risks. Systematic anchoring, scaling, rock bolting, netting and filling under extreme access conditions eliminated these risks. Tunnel excavation started from the slope surface without any pre-cut or conventional portal construction. The opposite northern portals of the tunnel Coschütz are situated in more gentle rock slopes. After removal of debris, excavation of the eastern tunnel started in a 30° slope striking oblique to the driving direction, without any precut, too. Because of the gentle slope inclination the cross section was not earlier completely covered by rock than 30 m behind. The western tunnel started from an optimized short, narrow and steep precut. Its flanks were stabilized by reinforced shotcrete and rock bolts. Because of the small distance between the tubes rock bolts were drilled into the cross section of the neighboring tunnel. Tunnel excavation was made by drill and blast operation, preliminary support consisted of steel arches, reinforced shotcrete and radial rock bolts. Thorough survey of the bolt’s coordinates and direction prevented them from meeting each other. Rock bolts were of the permanent type to prevent the final lining from being obliquely loaded. Systematically arrayed measuring devices checked deformations of slopes and tunnels. Zusammenfassung Der Neubau der Bundesautobahn A 17 wird Dresden und Prag miteinander verbinden. Die vierspurige Autobahn quert westlich von Dresden das enge und tief eingeschnittene Tal der Wilden Weißeritz mit einer Brücke. An beide Brückenwiderlager schließen mit schiefwinkligem Anschnitt doppelröhrige Tunnel an, deren Portale in den felsigen Talflanken liegen. Die unterschiedlichen geotechnischen Verhältnisse, die Überlegungen für einen jeweils optimalen Entwurf und der Bau der portalnahen bergmännischen Tunnelabschnitte sind Gegenstand dieser Veröffentlichung. Die Südportale des Tunnels Dölzschen liegen in einer vertikalen, 65 m hohen Felswand, 25 m über dem Talgrund. Die Felswand erwies sich als global kippgefährdet, außerdem lagen flächig verteilte erhebliche Steinschlag- und Felssturzrisiken für Bau und Betrieb vor. Die Kippgefahr wurde durch ein Systemraster aus vorgespannten Felsankern, die Steinschlag- und Felssturzrisiken durch bergsteigerisches Beräumen mit dem Brecheisen, Felsnägel und Steinschlagschutznetze eliminiert. Der Tunnelausbruch begann von einer Vorschüttung direkt in der Felswand ohne Voreinschnitt im Schutz einer kurzen Luftbogenstrecke. Die gegenüberliegenden Nordportale des Tunnels Coschütz befinden sich in wesentlich flacheren Hängen. Nach dem Aushub einer mehrere Meter dicken Abraumhalde begann der Tunnelausbruch der östlichen Röhre asymmetrisch mit einer Luftbogenstrecke in einer spitzwinklig zur Vortriebsrichtung streichenden, 30° mit dem Vortrieb steigenden Felsfläche, ebenfalls ohne Voreinschnitt. Wegen der flachen Neigung der Böschung war der Tunnelquerschnitt erst nach 30 m vollständig überdeckt. Für den Vortrieb der westlichen Tunnelröhre mussten erst eine zwischen den Röhren vorhandene Felsnase teilweise abgetragen, die westlich anschließende zurückspringende Felswand vertikal gestellt und gesichert und Felsaushub in der rechten Flanke getätigt werden. Der damit entstehende Voreinschnitt wurde so kurz wie möglich und ohne seitliche Arbeitsräume ausgeführt. Die Sicherung der Böschungen erfolgte mit bewehrtem Spritzbeton und Felsnägeln. Wegen des geringen Abstands der beiden Röhren wurden die unteren Lagen der radialen Ausbruchsicherung durchgeankert. Der Tunnelvortrieb begann im Schutz eines geankerten Portalkranzes und ebenfalls von einer Luftbogenstrecke aus.

The process of atomisation is introduced and related to granulation. Some processes applicable to ferroalloys are discussed, along with their limitations and advantages. Examples of applications of atomisation to the processing of ferroalloys, including ferrosilicon and ferromanganese for use in the welding industry and as injectable additions to steel or cast iron are also presented. The economics of the process and the impact of process scale are discussed, along with criteria for process selection and system design.
