Anionic surfactants, such as oleic acid and sodium oleate (OLE), and cationic surfactants, such as dodecyl amine-hydrochloride (DDA), are used as flotation collectors of spodumene. However, recovery is poor even if activating ions are used because gangue minerals are also activated. Some reports demonstrate that OLE/DDA mixtures act as a selective collector to enhance spodumene recovery. From mostly macroscopic tests, it has been argued that anionic OLE and cationic DDA form electroneutral complexes, which are adsorbed on the mineral surface through chemisorption; however, no molecular evidence has been presented. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms of the collector mixtures remain mostly unknown. It seems necessary to first study the behaviour of these surfactants confined in salt solutions, to determine auto-associations when they are pure and cross-associations when mixed, the transition from monomers to micelles, and the structure of the micelles and the effects of pH, temperature and concentration. In this paper, ab initio calculations are first used to determine the surface charge distribution of OLE and DDA separately. Then molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine the conformation, aggregation, and diffusion of these pure and mixed surfactants in freshwater and saltwater with the ionic strength of seawater in a pH range. In particular, it is interesting to determine the various associations that result in mixtures of both surfactants and the impact of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations on the structures formedp. Cations influence the order of the structure and orientation of water dipoles, reducing the mobility of water, ions, and surfactant molecules. This knowledge is critical to improve the molecular understanding of the adsorption mechanisms on minerals. Keywords: Computer simulation, molecular dynamics, flotation, collectors, saltwater

A frequency distribution model plays a fundamental role in ore evaluation, especially for the feasibility study of new deep gold mines. The geological complexity of the reefs being mined at present in the Witwatersrand basin poses some difficulties regarding the modeling of the underlying ore-value distribution. This geological complexity has given rise to a need for more applicable distributional models. This paper places the geology of the Witwatersrand basin in perspective and draws some important conclusions from the genesis of the deposition. In addition to the three-parameter lognormal model, two more-general distributional models are proposed. These are the compound lognormal (CLD) and log-generalized inverse Gaussian (LN-GIG) distributions. A detailed, although preliminary, comparative study of these two more-general models with the three-parameter lognormal model is described, and the efficiencies of the estimates and modeling are analysed. It is found that the broad assumption that gold grades follow a three-parameter lognormal law is not always the case, and the need to test for departures from log normality should be emphasized so as to ensure the use of appropriate models.

There are basic areas of importance within a concentrator or mineral separation plant, which require focus to ensure acceptable recoveries, throughputs remain at an acceptable level and product grades meet specification. Professional and para-professionals within the mineral sands industry are in demand due to the booming resource sector. Added to this, new mineral sands operations are being commissioned straining the industry further. These factors have increased staff turnover and introduced many new people to the industry. It is essential these new entrants are armed with basic plant troubleshooting skills relevant to the minerals sands industry to minimize production lost through poor recoveries. Mineral sands processing does not involve highly technical or sophisticated unit processes. However, success is often slow to arise due to a lack of detailed understanding, as well as managing multiple interrelated unit processes within a plant. Fundamental background physical conditions (such as equipment loading and water quality) must be met for unit processes to be efficient. Technical management of these process plants should always include observation of these background conditions for they often provide the answer to underperformance. Examples are presented with an indication of the possible effects on recovery and product grade.

OosterveldIn opening the session, the Chairman indicated that the papers and discussions would revolve about quantitative methods of analysis and optimization of various aspects of exploration planning. The five papers would cover a wide range of topics within a general theme of exploration analysis, and it would be appropriate, therefore, to present the. papers as representing a sequential information-gathering process, namely, (i)geochemical and geophysical types of surveying for the location and identification of anomalous zones, (ii) tren¬ching and drilling of the anomalous zones found, and (iii) further refinement of the data for ore reserve calculations and production planning.The first paper, which was presented by Dr W. A. Hodgson, dealt with the optimum spacing between soil sample traverses conducted during geochemical prospecting. The theme of the paper was that the critical sampling interval should be based on the concept of element continuity, and that this interval could be determined by means of a correlogram. Ensuing discussion concerned the probability of the method, designed for areas where dispersion was high, working in localities where dispersion was either low or virtually non-existent. In the latter eases, specific orientation surveys for varying topographic, climatic and geological conditions would possibly be more useful than the preparation of correlograms. A further suggestion was made that cost versus risk should be taken into consideration when deciding upon the spacing between traverses. A balance could be struck by mathematical optimization. If the exploration budget was fixed, then the variance of risk could be minimized.The second paper was a short contribution by Mr C. J. Lenz. Computer-based plotting and evaluation of geochemical prospecting results were carried out because the low cost of analysis in Rhodesia permitted very large volumes of data to be accumulated in mass-coverage operations. Anomalous areas were demarcated within different environments by selecting probability or population boundary values from frequency distributions. In the short discussion which took place it was debated whether the method should be used only in the early high-risk stages of geochemical exploration and whether the introduction of geological bias could influence the actual results of an exploration program."

I appreciate the honour that has been bestowed upon me by my election as President of this Institute. We are starting what I believe will be a challenging year. The first challenge facing the Institute is financial. From the accounts for you will note that the Institute operated at a loss for the first time since 1987. average membership subscription was increased by only 10 per cent, reflecting desire to keep costs down in the minerals industry. The Institute will therefore to rely on other income to meet its budget requirements and break even financially. source of these funds will be the activities of the Technical Programme Committees. disciplines-Mining, Extraction Metallurgy, and Metals Technology are planning programmes for the coming year. I urge al members to increase their support of colloquia schools. Increased membership would also bring in more funds. Please, therefore, encourage colleagues who are not yet members of the Institute to join it.

The use of backfill for regional and local support is receiving increasing attention in the South African mining industry. To ensure that fill materials meet the purposes for which they are intended, a test procedure to characterize the load-deformation characteristics for a particular fill was developed. The major variables identified as influencing the load-bearing proper- ties of backfill include particle size distribution, porosity, width-to-height ratio, strain rate, confinement, water content, and additives. The influence of these variables on the performance of backfill is described in relation to crushed waste, dewatered tailings and deslimed tailings. These investigations confirmed that no single test could be used to define the overall stress-strain behaviour of a selected fill. Nevertheless, resulting from this work, a preliminary standard test procedure for uncemented backfill materials, com- prising a suite of tests in unconfined and confined compression, has been formulated. This test procedure is a significant advance towards a more meaningful evaluation of fill materials. Test results will also provide numerical information for input use in computer programs for the design of mine layouts incorporating backfill.

Short-term plans must meet the long-term goals while accounting for shovel selectivity, operational space, and scheduling restrictions. There are several approaches that deal with these issues to deliver a feasible short-term schedule. This paper compares two approaches based on mathematical programming to address the short-term mining cut definition and scheduling in an integrated way. They work by scheduling extraction to comply with long-term production goals, but they differ in how mining cuts are modelled. The first approach schedules Selective Mining Units (SMUs) but aggregates them around predefined locations. The second approach does not work on SMUs; it decides directly what mining cuts are to be used from a pre-defined set of shapes. It assigns a destination and schedules the extraction for the selected mining cuts. We applied both approaches in a real case study to compare their results in terms of profit, mining cut design, expertise needed, profit, and optimisation performance.

To improve the flotation performance of chalcopyrite collector, 2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl xanthate (TBEX) and its derivative O-(2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl)-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (TBEETC) were designed and prepared by the introduction of a 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group into xanthate and thionocarbamate. TBEX and TBEETC were both prepared via the one-pot method with superior efficiency, which has significant commercial implications. The micro-flotation tests demonstrated that compared with sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) and O-isopropyl-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (Z-200), TBEX and TBEETC both possessed better collecting ability and selectivity for chalcopyrite. DFT calculations and XPS were utilised to investigate the flotation mechanism involving TBEX or TBEETC and chalcopyrite. The results demonstrate that although 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group does not interact with minerals directly, its introduction reduces the energy of HOMO, so that they can better accept electrons instead of donating electrons which leads to better interaction with copper atoms rather than iron atoms. Copper electrowinning models are useful for prediction of process performance, optimisation and improved understanding of complex phenomena such as current distribution without the expense of physical experiments. Recently, finite element models such as those generated in COMSOL Multiphysics have been developed for the electrowinning process. The predictive capacity of these models is improved by incorporating physical and chemical phenomena. Since physicochemical properties of electrolytes can have a significant effect on the quality of copper produced, this work was conducted to investigate the effect of such properties on electrodeposition at varying levels of copper, sulphuric acid concentration, iron concentration and temperature, in the presence of a smoothing agent. Tests were conducted at conditions similar to those for industrial copper electrowinning. Mathematical correlations were developed for the following properties; density, conductivity and diffusivity which were compared to existing models in literature and thereafter applied in a COMSOL generated model. The model predicts, current distribution at the cathode surface, deposit thickness (morphology), concentration of species within the cell and current efficiency. Current distribution output shows the impact of several phenomena on the deposit generated including the relationship between increasing copper concentration and current density and lack of influence of acid concentration on this property. A back-propagation model, which is typical of the models used in the science of artificial neural networks, was applied to the prediction of gossans from the southeast area of Habei Province in China. A success rate of 100 per cent was achieved. The results show that the neural-network approach is good, and that it can be used effectively in the prediction of multi metallic deposits.

The ferrite-pearlite microstructure is the most popular microstructure for alloys used in structural applications, including railway wagon wheels. These alloys have been designed through alloying and thermo-mechanical processing to have a refined microstructure. Ferrite-pearlite alloys are low cost, weldable, have good fabricability, and are reliable under extreme conditions. Given these performance attributes, it seems unlikely then that their dominant position as structural steels would ever be challenged by alternative microstructures. One major achievement in the development of ferrite-pearlite steels has been in the refinement of their interlamellar spacing to very fine distances of the order of < 0.3 µm. A refined microstructure increases the hardness of the alloy, thus increasing its life under wear conditions. The interlamellar spacing in pearlitic steels has, however, been refined almost to its theoretical limit. The increasing demand for speed and increased axle loading on railway wagons requires the use of stronger, tougher, and more durable materials. This has opened the window for the development of novel bainitic steels. Bainitic alloys have a higher level of microstructural refinement than pearlitic ones. They have shown to have good wear resistance and rolling-contact fatigue resistance, and high toughness. This paper will discuss the progress to date on the development of bainitic railway wheel alloys. Four alloy chemistries have been chosen for possible further development.

"Sampling error and bias, especially the Increment Preparation Error (IPE), are introduced when the tool allocated to do the job fails to extract a representative sample. This is the case with chip sampling; the tool can only extract haphazard shapes of loose or fractured material and not always from within the demarcated sample area. Increment Extraction Error (IEE) and Increment Delimitation Error (IDE) could be severe, but are found to be relatively unbiased. The uncontrolled action of the sampler in discarding excess sample material after sample collection has a significant impact on the error and bias introduced with each and every extraction. A new type of bias, referred to as the ‘waste discard bias’, arises when samplers select what portion of the excess sample material to discard at the sample site. Material visually identified as waste is discarded in preference to mineralized broken ore if there is an excess of sample material. This results in a considerable error in the analytical results. The bias is proportional to the reef-waste ratio in the demarcated sample. IntroductionTwo types of ‘sampling’ are distinguished, namely sampling of particulate materials (broken ores) and sampling of solid, unbroken in situ mineralized reef. This study considers only chip- or face-sampling of in situ, goldbearing, carbon-rich conglomerates typical of the Upper Witwatersrand Supergroup and examines where components of sampling error and bias, clearly specified in the Theory of Sampling, may arise during the practice of ‘face sampling’. Many millions of face samples have been extracted from Witwatersrand-type mines using a hammer and chisel, and detailed descriptions (standard operating procedures) of how the samples should be taken have been developed by many mining companies. There is, however, no taxonomy or nomenclature for managing or reporting the different types of errors associated with chip sampling. The Theory of Sampling compiled by Pierre Gy in the early 1950s provides, comprehensive nomenclature of sampling errors that is applied to particulate sampling of ore in a lot, a stockpile, or a moving stream on a conveyor belt. The taxonomy and characteristics of sampling errors, grouped according to the sources from which they arise, and identified by Gy (1973, 1979, 1982, 1992, 1995, and 1998) are shown in Figure 1. This classification of errors is used extensively in regard to the sampling of particulate materials in the mining and minerals industry, but not in regard to chip sampling. A relatively small mass (hundreds of grams) of representative particulate material for estimating the average grade of a much larger mass (thousands of tons – the ‘lot’ in the Theory of Sampling) is extracted by the chipping or cutting of a representative rock ‘sample’ from the stope face."

In dredging practice sand is eroded at very high flow velocities using water jets. The existing pick-up functions overestimate erosion. By taking the permeability into account conventional pick-up functions can be made suitable for high velocity erosion. This can be achieved by modifying the critical Shields parameter. The procedure is demonstrated using the pick-up function of Van Rijn. The theory is compared with experiments and agreement is good.

Optimizing the public gains from the exploitation of mineral resources By Dr A. AZIS and Dr J. ZWARTENDYK Every nation must decide how it should exploit its mineral resources so as to contribute most to its national objectives. It is argued that the present value of the future corporate income tax flow derived.from mineral exploitation may serve as a useful indicator in moving toward a taxation policy that would contribute optimally toward the greatest public benefit. The future stream of corporate income taxes depends largely on the mineral endowment, consisting of deposits now being mined, known unmined deposits, and unknown deposits. Unknown deposits may be estimated by geological inference. Both known and unknown deposits can be categorized according to grade and size, and divided into economic and uneconomic deposits on the basis of certain prices, costs, rate of return and taxation levels. Computer simulations can be run of discounted cash flow models at various taxation levels to showthe impact of taxation changes on future tax revenues.

FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R2,124, compared with an excess of income over expenditure of R4,218 last year. There are a number of reasons for this substantial change. There was a loss on realization of investments compared with a substantial surplus in recent years. The publication of the Journal once again resulted in a large loss in spite of a generous subvention of R2,000 from the Department of Cultural Affairs and other assistance amounting to R750. The revenue from sales of publications was down considerably. This is a figure which fluctuates considerably from year to year. The secretarial fee was considerably higher than previously. Due to pressure of work it was necessary for the Secretary to relinquish his duties with the Institute of Land Surveyors and, therefore, for this Institute to assume the additional staff costs involved. Finally there was unusual expenditure on the 75th Anniversary celebrations. There was a pleasing increase in revenue from subscriptions, due to the steadily increasing membership, but this was quite inadequate to cover the substantial increases in expenditure and losses in revenue mentioned above. The changes that have been effected in the arrangements for the publication of the Journal have been mentioned elsewhere in this report. It is expected that these will bring about substantial financial benefits in the long term. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of Rl00 and the total fund was therefore increased by this amount to R4,206. The balance sheet indicates that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R8,755 to R13,059, while the Accumulated Funds now amount to R22,567 as against R24,691 last year. Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institutes. FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, indicate that income again exceeded expenditure by a margin of R21 410 (last year R28 524). This year&apos;s income of R71 184 showed a further increase compared with last year&apos;s figure of R55 025. Costs, however, also in¬creased, and it is calculated that, excluding non-recurrent costs, the cost of running the Institute in¬creased by R6 654 from R25 501 to R33 155 for the current year. The main increases were involved in secretarial fees, stationery and print¬ing, and in publication of the Journal. All indications are that costs will continue to rise, and we have been advised that the A.S. & T.S. will be increasing their secretarial fees by 25 per cent in the year ahead to meet their rising costs. This year&apos;s surplus was derived entirely from the revenue from sales of publications (R13 644) and a surplus from the 1974 Winter School (RIO 654). There can be no certainty that revenue from these sources can be repeated each year. Our funds are in a satisfactory position because of these worth¬while activities, but the administrat¬ion of the Institute should not de¬pend on them. Council will accord¬ingly have to give consideration in the year ahead to an upward adjust¬ment of subscriptions to meet rising costs.

"Recoverable mineral resources assessment has become a standard geostatistical application in the mining industry, with various geostatistical techniques currently available. This investigation aimed to improve the prediction at the Sungun deposit and to obtain mineral resource models capable of handling (i) the change of support from drill-hole composites to selective mining units (SMUs), (ii) the multivariate nature of the ore control selection criteria that involves both copper and molybdenum grades; and (iii) the local uncertainty on the true (unknown) grades. The solution presented in this paper is to use direct block-support sequential cosimulation in order to construct a set of alternative outcomes of the copper and molybdenum grades on block support over the deposit, with no need for storing point-support values, hence with a considerable gain in memory management and CPU time. The grade realizations so obtained are then processed to calculate the uncertainty in the mineral resources that can be recovered above given cut-off grades, both globally and on a blockby- block basis. IntroductionGeostatistical methods are widely used by mining companies to determine a resource model of the tonnage and head grade of a potential orebody, which is one of the first and most critical inputs underpinning any mining project. The prediction of the grade, tonnage, and recoverable metal for a particular mining plan and the corresponding financial forecast constitute the main technical risks in mineral resource evaluation. The conventional approach to this problem is to predict the mineral grade for constant volumes relevant to the mining plan and to base the recoverable mineral resource calculations on those predictions. Alternatively, one can directly predict the local variability in the mining block grades based on a spatial distribution model (David 1988; Rossi and Deutsch 2014). Multiple realizations can also be constructed by conditional simulation, providing a more complete representation of block grade uncertainty, as well as the uncertainty over multiple blocks. Simulation methods allow quantification of the uncertainty of the mineral resource prediction risks in downstream studies such as mine design, mine planning, or operational optimization studies; the risk assessment is achieved after applying transfer functions to the conditional simulation models (Dimitrakopoulos 2012; Rossi and Deutsch 2014)."

"Excessive amounts of moisture in product coal can influence the efficiency of downstream utilization processes due to a decreased calorific value and handling problems. Stockpiles can be used to decrease the moisture content of coal by means of gravity drainage and evaporation. This paper is focused on the evaporation of moisture from a coal stockpile surface with the aim of investigating the effect of particle size on the rate of evaporation as well as the depth to which evaporation extends.It was observed that moisture initially evaporates at a higher rate from a stockpile consisting of fine particles (-6.7 mm) than from coarser particles (-13.2 mm +6.7 mm). This high rate of evaporation is restricted to the outer shell of the fine coal stockpile. However, for coarse coal, the porous nature increases the depth at which evaporation occurs. Evaporation of moisture was observed up to the fourth day of each experimental run, after which steady state was obtained. It was shown the water can evaporate from the surface into the body of the stockpile, depending on the coal particle size and void spacing. An experimental reclaim depth of 0.4 m was achieved after 4 days. The effectiveness of wind and solar action can be improved by orienting the stockpile perpendicular to the predominant wind direction, maximizing the surface area of the pile, and reclaiming the coal from the pile gradually in shallow cuts over a large area (Williams, D.J. 2006)."

The development of short- and medium-term mine production schedules in isolation from each other has meant that only a local optimum can be achieved when each scheduling phase is carried out. The globally optimal solution, however, can be achieved when integrating scheduling phases and accounting for the interaction between short-term and medium-term activities simultaneously. This paper addresses the task of integrating short- and medium-term production plans by combining the short-term objective of minimizing deviation from targeted mill feed grade with the medium-term objective of maximizing net present value (NPV) into a single mathematical optimization model. A conceptual sublevel stoping operation comprising 30 stopes is used for trialling segregated and integrated scheduling approaches. Segregated medium- and short-term scheduling using separate models achieved an NPV of $42 654 456. The final scheduling approach involved integrating the two scheduling horizons using the newly-developed globally optimal integrated production scheduling model to achieve an NPV of $42 823 657 with smoother mill feed grade. The larger the stope data set, the larger the difference between the two scheduling approaches is likely to be. At the very least, an integrated approach ensures feasibility across the two scheduling horizons, which cannot always be assumed when using a segregated approach.

The Annual General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, August 14th, 1974. Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg (President) was in the Chair. There were present 56 Fellows, 21 Members, 2 Graduates, 5 Associates, 16 Students, and 58 Visitors, making a total of 158. The President declared the Meeting open at 4.08 p.m. OBITUARIES The President: Ladies and gentlemen, before we start the business of the meeting, it is my sad duty to announce the deaths of the following members of the Institute since our last meeting: Dr O. A. E. Jackson, Honorary Life Fellow and Past President; C. Airth, T. L. Blunt, A. E. Frazer, C. L. Lamb, and K. Richardson, Life Fellows; and J. T. Beaumont, Fellow. As you know, there were a number of other deaths during the year, which were reported at previous General Meetings of the Institute. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased, and in sympathy with the bereaved, I ask you to rise and observe a few moments&apos; silence.
