The geological setting, morphology and physical properties of massive sulfide deposits must be taken into account when designing the underwater systems being currently constructed for mining of this type of marine minerals. Based on more than 20 years experience of hydrothermal mineralization studies in the northern equatorial part of the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) we have provided the following conclusions:

"Built in 1940’s to provide a key roadway arterial between New York and Boston, the Heroes Tunnel is the only highway rock tunnel in the state of Connecticut and is part of the Wilbur Cross Parkway. This 365.0 m long tunnel consists of two barrels, each with two lanes of traffic, and carries over 71,000 vehicles per day. For nearly 70 years, the tunnel has seen millions of vehicles pass through but time has taken its toll and now the tunnel lining, ventilation system and radial section joints are significantly deteriorated and in need of rehabilitation. Owned and maintained by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), CTDOT initiated a unique managed approach to mitigate the risk, social impacts and financial implications associated with rehabilitation of this tunnel. This new approach consists of performing field inspection and conducting a comprehensive study to explore six rehabilitation options, including construction of new tunnels and enlarging the existing tunnels. The main criteria for this study are: Impact on traffic and the resulting delay cost; Construction cost; Construction duration; and Construction complexity. This paper will present the results of the alternative study. PROJECT BACKGROUND Location and Importance Heroes Tunnel is located in the State of Connecticut within the Town of Woodbridge and the City of New Haven near the Town of Hamden border. Heroes Tunnel is the only true highway tunnel in the State of Connecticut. The tunnel is part of the Wilbur Cross Parkway (Route 15), a scenic connection between Hartford and New York. Originally constructed and opened to traffic in 1949, the tunneled portion of the parkway passes through the West Rock Ridge. The tunnel was originally named West Rock Tunnel, but was re-designated as Heroes Tunnel in 2003. Route 15 is a vital roadway within the State transportation infrastructure. In the vicinity of Heroes Tunnel, Route 15 carries approximately 71,000 vehicles daily. Locally, Route 15 provides access to residences, shopping centers, and points of interest, as well as other state roadways. Regionally, Route 15 connects New York to the Hartford area and serves as an alternate expressway route to I-95 and I-91. The tunnel is approximately 365.0 m long and passes through the West Rock Ridge. West Rock Ridge is an 11.3 km long rock ridge located on the west side of New Haven. A network of suburban streets abuts the mountain on all sides and a seasonal paved park road climbs to the crest of the ridge. Figure 1 depicts the tunnel topography and location."

Feldspars have major uses in glass manufacture and in ceramic products. About 6 million metric tons (6.6 million short tons) are used annually. Feldspars are desirable because of their high aluminum and alkali contents. Na feldspars are favored for glass, while K feldspar is often preferred in the pottery and tile industries. Economic deposits occur in a variety of geological environments. Most are in granites or granite-like bodies, pegmatites being a common source worldwide. Alkali granites, particularly those some- times called alaskites, are mined directly as a source of feldspar and associated minerals. Some other igneous bodies, such as aplites, rhyolites, and partly altered granites (for example china stone) provide alternative feldspar-rich products. Nepheline syenites and phonolites are other sources of feldspar and contain higher amounts of alkalis. Feldspar-rich (arkosic) sediments derived from the weathering of pegmatites and granites are widely extracted and processed for use in ceramics. The present study reviewed the various sources of feldspars throughout the world. Data on the quality of products has been taken from literature, and samples have been obtained from a large number of producers. The mineralogy and chemistry of the samples has been determined and, as far as possible, have been related to the geology of the source area. Feldspar products show a wide range of chemical and mineralogical compositions. Some are pure Na feldspar (albite), others are made up entirely of K feldspar (microline and orthoclase), but many are mixtures of Na and K feldspars. Significant quantities of quartz are often present, and many products contain mica and kaolinite. Fe203 con- tents are very low, typically less than 0.1 percent. Detailed mineralogical studies show that four groups of products can be recognized on the basis of feldspar mineralogy. These are albite, albite with microcline, microcline with orthoclase, and orthoclase with albite. Products containing microcline and orthoclase together are mostly sedimentary in origin. Those with albite only, or albite with microcline have a pegmatitic or granite origin. Those containing orthoclase as the dominant K feldspar are derived from aplites or rhyolites. There does not appear to be any relationship between the feldspar mineralogy and the quartz content. Peraluminous S- type granites and pelite-dominated high-grade metamorphic rocks, in which there is a significant volatile component, are likely to be the most important feldspar sources. Partial kaolinization of feldspar-containing rocks often improves minability, decreases crushing costs, reduces iron content, and increases the K2O/Na2O ratio.

Mining-related wastes, which are increasing, are being utilized more and more as valuable resources in Virginia. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) divides mining-related wastes into two categories: those generated from mineral extraction and beneficiation and those generated from mineral processing. Materials from both categories are produced in Virginia, where waste (by-product) materials are present at a variety of mining sites and processing plants; some of which have been exploited for various uses in the past and/or present. These materials include: used concrete recycled for roadbase material; pyrite coated with magnetite for use in portland cement; minor amounts of fly ash for use in concrete block, lightweight aggregate, and flowable structural fills; granite and diabase quarry fines for use as agricultural and asphalt filler; lime kiln dust for use in neutralizing and stabilizing coal refuse; soapstone aggregate for use in terrazzo heat retention panels; kaolin for use as a filler product and as an ingredient in white cement; slate quarry fines used as landcover and combined with aggregate for crusher run and as a filler in asphalt; and coal refuse for use as fuel in a lightweight aggregate plant. There are some materials available that have never been utilized, although several ideas were investigated to turn them into usable commodities. One such material is a high-alumina scrap produced as a by-product at a ferrovanadium processing plant. However, large quantities of waste materials from metal mining, industrial mineral, and fossil fuel operations remain to be disposed of in an environmentally safe and economic manner. In 1989, almost one million tons of fly ash were produced from burning of coal at eight coal-fired power plants in Virginia. Present uses for this waste such as an ingredient in concrete block, concrete aggregate, and in structural fills cannot dispose of all the available material; however, increased use of fly ash as a soil/rock substitute for structural fills and embankments may solve the problem of its disposal. Another waste material is calcium carbonate precipitate paste produced at a lithium carbonate processing plant and presently being used for back filling an on-site inactive underground limestone mine. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastes in the form of CaS04 will probably increase threefold. If this material contains a minimum of 95 percent gypsum and negligible chloride, it may have a value to a wallboard manufacturer as we move toward the year 2000. Thought must be given how this increasing waste can be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

The increasing volume of wastes being generated by industry is a legacy of the industrial revolution and subsequent industrial growth. Social and regulatory pressures have been mounting on industry to improve its waste management practices. In many industrial sectors, waste disposal has been the only method of waste management. Land farming, underground burial, deep wells and incineration are still practiced. Often, concentration and volume reduction of waste streams are also practiced to reduce the waste management costs. In the recent years, there has been emphasis on waste minimization. Since the 19th century, industry has practiced recycling of usable resources as a way of handling unwanted byproducts. The mining industry has recovered or extracted economic minerals from tailings for decades. For example, during the gold rush period of 1970s, extraction of gold from tailings dams became economically attractive. Similarly, when it was economical, coal and shale fractions have also been recovered from tailings and refuge materials for commercial uses. In the steel industry, with the development of new furnace technology, recycling of flue dust and scrap iron was practiced as early as in the 19th century. Before 1900, there was little incentive for the industry to reduce the waste volumes. Manufacturers, however, did see a rationale for adopting profit-increasing techniques. They made an effort to recover and recycle economic materials from waste sources. One of the pioneering examples of resource recovery is the coke making industry. As the industry was market driven, products recycled from coke batteries included ammonia for use in fertilizers, gas for power generation and heating, and tar for road construction, wood preservation and roofing. Tar had been avery troublesome waste byproduct. But it quickly became a valuable chemical raw material, providing the foundation for Germany's dominance of the world's dye and medicine markets before World War I. Similar trends evolved in the chemical industry. In the context of current environmental regulations and escalating mining and processing costs, recycling of re- [ ] sources is becoming economically more attractive. Solid and liquid wastes generated by industries contain a range of inorganic and organic contaminants. Among these contaminants, metals and hydrocarbons form major groups. Treatment of these wastes is essential to meet regulatory disposal requirements. In the recent years, based on the principles of chemical and mineral process engineering, processes have been developed to treat these industrial wastes. This article reviews some of the processes that have made impacts and have proven to be effective at commercial scales.

"The ecological costs related to the various optimized production schemes were calculated based on the designed ultimate pit. Moreover, the influence of the ecological costs on the selection of production schemes was discussed. In one designed pit, a series of geologically optimum pushbacks with sufficiently small increment were produced using the floating cone method founded on the principle of the highest metal content. Then all the pushbacks were reordered by the dynamic network diagram. The production scheme with the maximum NPV route was considered as the optimum one. The ecological impacts produced by mining were quantified and the ecological cost calculation models, which contain the direct eco-value loss, the indirect eco-value loss, the eco-restoration cost and the carbon emission cost were proposed. In one big open pit mine case, various production schemes were optimized and the one with maximum NPV was selected without taking into account the eco-costs. The scheme with the maximum comprehensive profit was obtained by calculating the eco-cost of each scheme. The results showed that the best scheme considered with the eco-cost was not the scheme with the maximum NPV. Therefore, the eco-cost presents the effect on the selection of the best production scheme.Introduction Optimizing production scheme is to determine the mining quantities of ore and rock, the pushing position of stope each year, and maximize the NPV of mine. In the theory, production scheming optimization has gone through trial and error (Pana and Carlson 1966), linear programming method (Johnson 1968), mixed integer programming (Gershon 1983), integer mapping (Kim and Cai 1990), dynamic programming et al (Gu et al 2014). In recent years, the study on production scheduling optimization has been focused on two aspects. On the one hand, the study is to solve the investment risk caused by the uncertainties of economic and geological environment (Ramazan and Dimitrakopoulos 2013, Marcotte and Caron 2010, Lamghari and Dimitrakopoulos 2012, Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos 2004, Benndorf and Shishvan 2014). On the other hand, the emphasis of the study was on reducing the problems for the optimization algorithm, to make it more efficient and practical (Cullenbine et al 2011, Shishvan and Sattarvand 2015, Askari-Nasab et al 2011, Nasab et al 2010). However, different production schemes cause different damage of mine land and pollutant emission, thus triggering environment problem. With the improvement of people’s consciousness of environment protection, the environmental issue of mining has been attracting more and more attention."

Introduction The Summitville Mine located in southwestern Colorado was added to the National Priorities List in June of 1994. Summitville was the site of mining operations that began in 1873 with the discovery and development of gold placer and lode deposits in the late 1800's. The mine site is located about 25 miles south of Del Norte, Colorado in the San Juan Mountains adjacent to the Rio Grande National Forest at an approximate altitude of 11,600 feet. The site was mined for gold, silver and copper between 1873 and 1947. The Summitville Consolidated Mining Corporation, Inc. (SCMCI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Galactic Resources, Ltd of Vancouver, Canada ran a large tonnage open-pit mine and cyanide heap leach operation from 1986 to 1992 (Pendleton and Posey, 1992) During the mine operation by SCMCI, approximately 10 million tons of gold ore was mined, crushed and stacked on a lined leach pad. Heap leach operations experienced water balance and unplanned solution discharges from the start of the mine life. Despite the production of 249,000 troy ounces of gold during the mine operation, SCMCI was unable to meet remedial requirements and notified the state of Colorado of its intention to file a Chapter VII bankruptcy in December 1992. The EPA Region VIII Emergency Response Branch took over site operations on December 16, 1992 to prevent a catastrophic release of hazardous substances to the environment. The multiple contamination sources at the mine site are due to both historic and SCMCI mining operations. Emergency response operations at the site have prevented releases of severely contaminated solution and a permanent treatment for all waste units at the site is under investigation. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued in October 1993 by Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC) at the Request of EPA Region VIII, Department of the Interior and Bureau of Reclamation. The RFP requested that interested companies provide information on their ability to implement innovative treatment technologies to improve treatment efficiency and reduce treatment costs for remediation of the heap leach pad (HLP) spent ore and ore leachate solutions. Dames & Moore and Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) jointly submitted a proposal suggesting application of biotreatment processes for detoxification of cyanide in spent ore and HLP leachate solutions. The proposal was accepted for pilot and field demonstration under the SPA Superfund Innovative Technology Demonstration Program (SITE) with additional funding from EPA Region VIII. This report discusses the test program and results of a Focused Feasibility Study which demonstrated biotreatment processes for spent ore cyanide detoxification.

INTRODUCTION The continuous mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners which were designed for increased productivity have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. Inhalation of this respirable dust by miners causes the Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Concern for CWP increased in the United States following a 1963-65 survey that showed definite x-ray evidence of CWP in 9.8 percent of working miners and in 18.2 percent of nonworking miners in the Appalachian bituminous coal region (Breslin and Niewiadomski, 1982). One of the major objectives of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was the prevention of CUP. This law initially limited the daily average exposure of coal miners to 3 mg/m3 of respirable dust. However, following the results of a probabilistic model developed by Jacobsen, et. al. in 1971, the limit was reduced to a mass concentration of 2 mg/m3 unless quartz content exceeds 5 percent, a rare occurrence in mines. Based on x-ray categorization prior to death it is believed that the mass concentration in the respirable fraction is a parameter of primary interest for hygenic evaluation of dust exposure. Elorgan, Burgess and Jacobson (1973) suggested that the quantity of inhaled dust, although influential is not the only aspect of exposure which is significant in producing CWP. Miners working in higher rank coal (anthracite) mines are more susceptible to CWP (Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson, 1973). This also confirms the findings of the British (Bennett, Dick and Kaplan, 1979 and Hurley, et. al., 1979) and Germany (Reisner and Rubock, 1977). Based on the cy to toxicological evidence Reisner and Rubock (1979) suggested that when coal properties are similar, increasing quartz and mineral content increases toxicity. David, Ottery and Le ?oux (1975) examined that as the severity of the CWP increased the retention of the coal dust content in the pulmonary region remained the same, while that of quartz content increased significantly . Leiteritz, Baur and Bruckman (1971) studied the various components of coal dust and showed that coal particles comprised a smaller fraction of the mass of fine dust than did particles , of quartz and minerals. It is ironic that quartz and mineral matter both comprise smaller fractions of the higher rank coal dust (Dodgson, et. al., 1971 and Dwiggins, 1981). The evaporite deposit at Searles Lake consists of alternating brine-saturated saline beds and saline-bearing mud beds. Three major subsurface brine-saturated saline horizons have been identified by private companies and the U.S. Geological Survey. They have been termed, from bottom to top, the Mixed Layer, Lower Salt, and Upper Salt. The important water-soluble components (Na, K, Mg, CO3, HCO3 , SO4, Cl, and B407) are either in brines or have combined to form the following minerals: halite, hanksite, trona, nahcolite, burkeite, borax, thenardite, northupite, sulfohalite, glaserite, etc. Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp., the current operator at the lake, selectively pumps interstitial brines from each of the major horizons to feed its three chemical plants. As the pumping continues, brines are continuously replenished within the deposit by dissolution of the minerals through natural recharge or artificial fluid injection (solution mining). The brines are processed to produce a variety of chemical products, which include sodium carbonate and sulfate, potassium chloride and sulfate, sodium borate, and boric acid. The Anaconda Minerals Co. has been evalua¬ting potential domestic trona acquisition since 1981. We have evaluated various properties in the Green River, Wyoming trona district, and Owens Lake and Searles Lake in southern California. In 1983, we purchased with our joint-venture partner, Leslie Salt Co., the southern portion of Searles Lake from Occidental Petroleum Corp. Since mid-1983, Anaconda has been conduct¬ing a small exploration-drilling program at the property. The initial core holes were drilled along and adjacent to the existing access road. In 1984 we used an all-terrain drill rig to gain access to drill sites on the playa where no roads exist. The use of this equipment proved to be highly successful. The drill program consists of coring to an average depth of 450 feet and collecting brine samples from potentially commercial horizons. The brine samples are collected by setting a packer and swabbing the hole. The core is logged and split lengthwise; one-half is submitted to our Tucson Geoanalytical Laboratory for semi-quantitative mineralogy by X-ray diffraction and the following suite of chemical analyses: Na, K, Mg, C03, HCO3, SO4, Cl, B407, Li, H20 insolubles, and acid insolubles. Additional test work for selected core samples will include effective porosity and horizontal permeability determinations. The brine samples are subjected to the same suite of chemical analyses (minus insolubles) as the core samples. In addition, specific gravity is also determined. Both cross sections and isopach maps are being constructed. The hydrological characteristics of the potentially commercial horizons are also being investigated.

"The design of the tunnels at Bond Street Station includes a final sprayed concrete fireproofing layer. The performance of this layer was verified by a program of testing to Crossrail’s KT24 specification, which proved that a dosage of 1kg/m³ polypropylene fibers and a layer thickness of 50mm would be sufficient to limit spalling in the event of a fire. Application of this thin layer was achieved using a state of the art spraying robot, with the ability to scan the profile and automatically apply a uniform layer of concrete. To provide assurance and calibrate this spraying robot, BFK developed a bespoke survey system for checking SCL thicknesses in the field. This provided an instant independent check of the spraying robot and allowed areas of inadequate thickness to be rectified without risk of cold joints. This paper describes the practical application of the fireproofing layer and how design compliance was ensured. INTRODUCTION Fire is one of the most serious risks to a tunnel. The nature of tunnels — being long enclosed spaces — can increase the intensity of a fire, and make fire-fighting and rescue operations difficult. The damage that can be caused has been demonstrated by a number of historic tunnel fires, such as the Channel Tunnel fires of 1996 and 2008, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel fire in 1999. Without any intervention, the high temperatures in a fire create thermal stresses and a build-up of vapor pressure within the pores of concrete, which eventually exceed the tensile strength and trigger explosive spalling. Spalling exposes the core of the section to severe temperatures, leading to a loss of concrete and steel reinforcement strength or further spalling of successive layers. The concrete used in tunnel linings is particularly susceptible to explosive spalling, due to its low permeability achieved by the addition of microsilica (Bailey 2011). The sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels on Crossrail have been designed to resist the worst anticipated fire in operation, in order to prevent collapse and minimize damage to the structure. The design called for a system of passive fire protection, the efficacy of which was validated by the contractor through a testing regime. It was critical that the application on site reflected the test conditions, which demanded special control of the profile and thickness of the lining. In order to meet these constraints on tolerances and quality, BAM Ferrovial Kier joint venture (BFK) developed a reliable method of working with the Meyco Logica spraying robot, and a bespoke survey system for accurately checking thicknesses in the field. These innovations are the focus of this paper."

In the past mining engineers have tended to rely heavily on the advice of fan manufacturers in relation to fan equipment issues. A more adequate approach was advocated in a paper [ Wallis, 1965 ] submitted to the Eighth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress held at Surfers Paradise, Australia during 1965. At that time Mount Isa Mine were in the process of installing 3 large 6096mm (20ft) diameter vertical axial flow surface fans of an advanced type [ Mathews et al, 1967 ]. The preliminary feasibility studies prior to preparing the detailed job specification for this project were extremely thorough with the result that it was possible to include detailed information and instructions in the document, ensuring the procurement of equipment that was satisfactory in all respects. Full advantage was taken of expert services provided by external organizations during the large coordinated multi-disciplinary exercise. My continuing activity and development in relation to the technology of axial flow fans is now at a stage where all known design and performance data are accessible through CAD programs [ Wallis and Kipp, 1987 ]. The extensive calculations that were necessary in 1983 can now be carried out in a mere fraction of the time, and with complete confidence. Model testing in order to validate the fan and duct design proposals is, in my view, no longer essential. The first of the computer programs enables a mine ventilation engineer to study a large number of alternative axial fan arrangements for comparison with the centrifugal alternative. By entering the volume flow rate, fan pressure and air density, he can then with ease, and rapidly, investigate the effect of various blading arrangements, downstream evasee area ratios, and hub ratios, on fan diameter and speed, with their related attainable fan efficiencies. This procedure had its origin back in the 60s when I was advising mining companies on new fan equipment. At that time such an investigation was quite lengthy and lacked the precision and completeness that is now available within the present programs. To obtain the major benefit from these outputs, it is most important not to be disconcerted by the three very important nondimensional parameters, namely, the tip flow coefficient (LAMt), the fan pressure coefficient (Kt or Kit), and the swirl coefficient (Es and/or Ep) as these are important when assessing the various design proposals. When seeking an understanding of the role and importance of each of these variables, ample help is provided in the user manual; the design recommendations are summarized in the help screens which are readily accessible within the design programs.

"Since entering the new century, China’s coal industry has witnessed the rapid development, and provided a reliable energy supply for the national economic and social development. But after the “golden decade” of rapid development, the coal industry now is facing overcapacity, low industrial concentration and production efficiency, high pressure of production safety and environmental protection and other prominent issues. Based on defining the connotation of highly-efficient recovery of coal resources, this paper established the relevant 8 indicators to reflect the highly-efficient recovery level of coal resources, summarized the present situation of China's coal resources recovery and the main problems, analyzed the development environment of China's coal industry under the new situation, and finally put forward the strategic measures to promote highly-efficient recovery of coal resources in China.1. Background Coal is the main energy in China. Since entering the new century, China's coal industry has made significant progress, and the level of production safety, resource recovery rate and mining mechanization increased significantly, which provided a reliable energy supply for the rapid development of the national economy. However, due to the changes of China's economic environment, slow growth of energy demand and other factors, some prominent contradictions in the coal industry have significantly restricted the healthy development of the industry. The first problem is serious overcapacity. In the past few years, 16 industries including coal, electric power, chemical and others have invested in coal mines. It is reported (Han 2016) that only during the nine years from 2005 to 2014, the fixed assets of coal industry increased totally more than 3.3 trillion RMB, which brought a large number of production capacity. Affected by the slowdown of economic growth and energy structure adjustment, Chinese coal demand has reached the peak platform and caused the overcapacity of coal supply, so shutting down the backward capacity is the most important task in the future. The second problem is the low efficiency of coal production. There are about 4.3 million coal mine workers in China, and the annual coal production per capita is less than 900 tons, while it was reported (EIA 2016) that the annual production per capita in the United States is more than 10 thousand tons. The third problem is that the green coal resources are not rich. Among the 1.53 trillion tons proven reserves, only about one third are green coal resources in accordance with the principle of ""safety, technology, environment and economy"". The coal resources with high quality and easily mining conditions are not abundant."

This chapter discusses the necessary construction techniques for installing coal mine ventilation devices. Included in the discussion are the major air controlling devices called over- casts, regulators, stoppings, and doors. Under-casts, although a valid device, are used infrequently in coal mining and are not discussed here. Typically, coal mines require a great many ventilation devices to control the air movement. Post-I969 mines have had to design their air systems to comply with the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (CMHSA) as discussed in Chap. 1. Pre- 1969 mines have had to redesign major portions of their systems to comply with the basic components of the law such as separation of air courses, single unit split ventilation, and minimum air quantities. It is not uncommon, therefore, to find a large mine (2.0 Mt/a) requiring several hundred overcast installations (permanent, as well as repeat construction), plus doors and regulators placed among a thousand or more stoppings. When each of these devices is subject to leakage from installation and weathering defects, the importance of effective construction becomes evident. An historic rule of thumb for average mine ventilation says that about 70% of all the air pressure generated by the mine fan is lost between the portal and the working faces. Of course, this rule is subject to many factors, but the message is clear: there is a tremendous inefficiency in controlling leakage through common air devices. This chapter strives to present a standard approach and design alternatives which can go a long way in reducing this leakage, and hence, ventilation costs. Historically, mine ventilation has progressed from natural, or draft ventilation, to fire-induced ventilation (Fig. l), furnace-fired centrifugal fans and finally, to today's modem mine fans. Underground controlling devices have been in use in the coal mines since the late 1600s, but the CMHSA of 1969 was the real turning point for mine ventilation. Minimum quantities and velocities of fresh air were required for mining, forcing coal operators and engineers to reevaluate and improve their systems. As a consequence, the cost for ventilating air increased. Today, companies face a variety of choices among design alternatives, materials, labor, and costs of ventilating devices for their mines. The best approach for any individual company or mine is determined by (1) the needs of the mine, and (2) the local design parameters. In my discussions of ventilation construction I shall be fairly general in terms of device installation steps, where specifics are warranted for clarification, I will include this information.

"With the background of water shortages and serious water pollution, issues of water involved in energy exploration and utilization have become critical problems affecting urban water usage. In order to identify the relationships of the energy-water nexus, this paper characterizes the energy-water nexus literature using a bibliometric method and based on the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure database platform. The results reveal that 1) Scientific outcomes in this field have increased sharply since 2003, with a slightly higher growth rate than that of general disciplines. 2) China Water Resources, Yangtze River and Express Water Resources & Hydropower Information are the dominant journals, and the main research fields include industrial economics, environmental science, and management, among other disciplines. 3) Hohai University, the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, and the Changjiang Water Resources Commission are the main research institutions in this field. However, the proportion of publications of these institutions is not high, which suggests that there is no institution dominating this field. 4) According to the keyword analysis, the hot spots in this field include ecological environment, sustainable development, environmental protection, climate change, etc. Energy-mining related keywords have increased over time, implying that the energy-water nexus from the perspective of the energy exploitation industry can become a key issue. At the same time, the frequency of keywords related to sustainable development has been maintained at a high level, and the studies concerned with the impacts of climate change were introduced into this field relatively late. The conclusion of this study provides a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the current situation as well as for further research in the energy-water nexus field.Introduction As an important strategic resource for national economic and social sustainable development, water has been increasingly focused on by the Chinese Government. Over the next decade, the total water demand of China will continue to grow steadily, which lead to a significant trend of increasing water consumption in the future (Zhang 2013). To reasonably exploit, utilize, conserve and protect water resources, the Water Law of the People's Republic of China was enacted by the members of the 9th National People's Congress Standing Committee in 1988 and after multiple revisions, the latest of which, in September 1, 2016, has involved water infrastructures in the national economic and social development plans of the government at all levels and regulated the rationale for water engineering construction. Thus, in the context of serious water shortages and water pollution, China’s government has taken several measures to make rational use of water resources."

Introduction In modern society, vanadium is defined as a strategic metal. Some 90% of the global consumption is used as an alloying agent for carbon steels, tool steels, and high-strength low-alloy steels (particularly for pipelines). Advanced titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloys are seeing application in the aerospace industry. Small but ever growing amounts are finding application as catalysts or in electronics. New uses are continually being discovered for this metal. One example of a new application is the vanadium-redox battery for use in generation plants and back-up power sources. Vanadium is found in a large number of minerals, of which the most important are carnotite, roscoelite, vanadinite, mottramite, and patronite. Just over a third of the world's vanadium is produced as a primary product; the balance is a by-product of the iron and steel, oil refining, power generation and uranium enrichment industries. Vanadium can also be sourced by recycling spent catalysts from the petrochemical industry and ash produced by the combustion of oil emulsion in power stations. However, recycling activities are believed to account for only a small amount of total world supply. Vanadium is recovered from these ores largely as the pentoxide (V2O5) [1]. The major sources of vanadium-bearing magnetite ores are scattered throughout Australia, China, Russia, and South Africa. Current estimates of world’s Proven & Probable vanadium reserves are of the order of 41.3 million tones [2, 3]. Commercial vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite deposits can be found in Kachkanar, Russia; Pan Zhihua, China; Bushveld, South Africa; and Windimurra, Western Australia [4]. Other deposits have been found in New Zealand, Canada, and India, among other countries. Vanadium consumption in the steel sector has increased some 7% per ton of steel over the last 10 years as new alloying applications have been found to improve steel's strength-to-weight ratio. Future demand from the aerospace and nuclear industries for non-ferrous vanadium alloys such as titanium and super-alloys is also likely to grow. Vanadium is usually added in the form of ferrovanadium, a vanadium-iron alloy. Vanadium compounds, especially the pentoxide form, are used in the ceramics, glass, and dye industries, and are also important as catalysts in the chemical industry. While established approaches may be used at an industrial scale to treat vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores in several countries, new alternatives are being developed worldwide. This review will give short overview of the treatment of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores, an overview of direct reduction and direct smelting processes and an approach to determine technical alternatives for the property.

INTRODUCTION Modern mine management is constantly striving to develop improved mining methods which will not only increase productivity, but will also provide a safer work environment and make the most efficient use of our natural resources. Progress can be seen in this area by tracing mining methods through history. Work that was originally done with hand tools progressed with the age of mechanization to conventional mining, matured to continuous and longwall mining, and the advent of short¬wall mining, a combination of continuous and longwall, has recently been seen. This new method of shortwall mining provides a promising method for safe and ex¬pedient coal extraction. This study focuses upon the planning, design de¬velopment, and operation of the first producing short¬wall unit in the US which was operated in the Pittsburgh coal seam in northern West Virginia. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine is located in northern West Virginia at Grant Town in the heart of the high volatile Pittsburgh coal seam. Originally opened in 1901, the mine has be¬come one of the largest in the US, encompassing an area of approximately 103.6 sq km (40 sq miles). The seam being mined was the high volatile Pittsburgh seam which ranged in thickness from 1.8 to 2.96 m (6 to 91/2 ft). Three types of mining methods were employed: con¬tinuous mining, longwalling, and shortwalling, with each type accounting for 50%, 30%, and 20% of total pro¬duction, respectively. A total of 630 contract and super¬visory personnel were employed to produce the mine's designed annual tonnage of 1.8 Mt (2 million st). There were ten producing sections, eight continuous miners, one longwall, and one shortwall, operating a total of 22 unit shifts per day. Eight shafts, varying in depth from 80.2 to 194.2 m (263 to 637 ft) provided entrance to the Pittsburgh coal seam. These shafts were used for ventilation, portaling, coal hoisting, supply, and emergency escape hoisting. Ventilation was achieved by means of three exhaust fans which provided 707.9 m3/s (1.5 million cfm) of air to the mine and removed approximately 141 584 m3 (5 mil¬lion cu ft) of methane per 24 hr period. The room-and-pillar method was used for secondary recovery with designed barrier blocks between panels of 61 m (200 ft) in width. THE PENETRATION RATE BASELINE DILEMMA The penetration rate is the instantaneous advance rate of a TBM in a rock tunnel. Normally expressed in feet per hour. The production rate is the penetration rate multiplied by the number of hours worked and then factored by the actual utilization of the TBM. In a given rock formation, the actual production rate is a result of many factors some of which are within the control of the contractor and some of which are based on the route selected. Factors that are within the contractors control are cutter profile, frequency of cutter changes, thrust, rotation speed, cutter spacing and the efficiency of the operation. Factors that are site (route) specific are compressive strength, fracture orientation, fracture frequency, micro- fracturing, quartz content, Moh’s hardness, Cerchar Abrasivity Brazilian Tensile Strength and Youngs Modulus of the rock. In addition the following route speci?c conditions are beyond the contractors control; rockjointing, rock stress fault zones, water in?ow and rock decomposition; all of which effect production rate. Any one of the above defined rock properties, equipment specifications and actual operating usage will change the penetration rate. Furthermore, since the rock formation changes both in content and orientation as the tunnel advances, the penetration rate is constantly varying. The current industry practice in bidding tunnels is for each contractor to individually evaluate the rock hardness and other properties and from this information develop a penetration rate. All other factors being equal, the contractor using the most optimistic penetration rate will be the low bidder and be awarded the project. As this view is by definition optimistic, invariably the rock will be harder than the low bid assessment and the contractor will request additional compensation for the changed condition. The contractor will attempt to justify his optimistic assessment as reasonable by using expert supporting analysis. The above described example which is quite common at present in the industry tends to make the most optimistic contractor (at time of bidding) the contractor selected for the project whereas it is in the owners interest to contract with the most efficient contractor not the most optimistic. This situation is similar to the Geotechnical analysis that was prevalent in the industry over twenty years ago. Many projects have experienced a significant reduction of penetration rate from that which was originally estimated. In these cases the contractor often makes a claim for extra compensation based on the difference between the actual rock encountered

International Minerals & Chemical Corp.'s New Wales operation near Mulberry, FL, is reportedly the world's largest concentrated phosphate chemical fertilizer and phosphate-based animal feed ingredients complex. Its latest expansion represents a $191-million investment. Two Northwest draglines were put to work at the operation early last year and, according to a company spokesman, total production from the units have more than doubled that from older rigs. This article describes how the draglines are used and provides details on the New Wales operation. The principle product at New Wales is phosphoric acid, produced by reacting ground phosphate rock with sulfuric acid in large concrete attack tanks. For each ton of phosphoric acid produced, New Wales must dispose of about 4.5 t (5 st) of waste gypsum. New Wales stores the gypsum on-site, and uses durable Northwest draglines to help handle the material. Two Units Maintain the Gypsum Stack After the gypsum is separated from the phosphoric acid through 23-m-diam (75-ft-diam) vacuum filters, it is mixed with water from a 121-hm2 (300-acre) recirculating cooling pond and, in slurry form, is pumped to the top of a 121-hm2 (300-acre) gypsum stack located adjacent to the cooling pond. The slurry contains mostly gypsum (CaSO4), with small traces of silica and other elements. The water at this point is corrosive, containing from 1-2% phosphoric acid. Its pH usually ranges from 1.5-2.0. Water drains from the gypsum stack into the cooling pond. Only about 15% of the pond's water, however, comes from the gypsum stack; the balance is from various sources throughout the complex and is held in the pond to cool before being returned for reuse in the plant. About 97% of New Wales' water needs come from this recycling program. The gypsum remains on the stack, inert, ready for future processing if it becomes economically feasible. Throughout the handling process, Northwest draglines work around the stacks' rim, continually directing the waste flow and digging out dried solids to heighten the perimeter dike to provide more storage volume. When wet, gypsum is extremely soft. When dry, it compacts well and provides footing with enough bearing capacity to support the machines. Processing at New Wales started in 1975 and the gypsum storage area has already been built up 12 m (40 ft) above grade. A total of 14.8 km3 (12,000 acre-ft) of solids are now stored. "Methane-air mixtures form explosive gas zones (EGZs) in underground longwall coal mine gob ventilation systems. Such EGZs have caused a number of fatal mine explosions, including the 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine, where 29 miners lost their lives. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling to predict EGZ locations. In this paper, a model of a bleeder-ventilated gob system includes two adjacent panels, an active longwall and a mined-out gob. Boundary conditions for the simulations match statutory ventilation conditions for methane concentrations and air flow rates at common measurement points throughout the mine. The modeling results predict the persistence of EGZs in the gob that may compromise the effectiveness of the bleeder ventilation system. INTRODUCTION Mine operators must maintain statutory air flow and air quality requirements at various locations throughout the mine ventilation network. U.S. regulations generally require mine operators to establish bleeder ventilation systems surrounding longwall gob areas (30 CFR §75.334.) Gilmore et al. (2015) documented that explosive gas zones (EGZs) exist within bleeder-ventilated gobs and may extend into the bleeder entries that must be examined weekly, presenting an immediate fire and explosion hazard to mine examiners. In a project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) under contract 200-2009-31409, researchers at Colorado School of Mines have developed a tool for modeling gob air quality using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This CFD model is capable of examining a wide range of longwall mine ventilation systems. Marts et al. (2014a, 2015) studied progressively sealed gobs with U-type ventilation and using a back return. Saki et al. (2015) examined the impact of gob ventilation boreholes and face air quantity effects on tailgate methane concentrations. Gilmore et al. (2014) modeled bleeder-ventilated gobs and Gilmore et al. (2015) studied the effects of bleeder regulator settings on EGZ volume and locations in the gob. CFD studies for progressively sealed gobs were generally carried out using 5000 ft (1500 m) panels because the gob atmosphere remains largely unchanged from about 500 m (1,500 ft) inby the face. A modular meshing methodology (Gilmore, 2015) permitted researchers to extend bleeder models to 10,000 ft (3050 m) to include the full extent of bleeder entries. This paper further expands the bleeder CFD model to study the gob atmospheres of two adjacent longwall panels, each 10,200 ft (3100 m) in length, with the active face located 6,700 ft (2040 m) from the startup room."

"NIOSH has observed that many control rooms and operator compartments in the US mining industry do not have filtration systems capable of maintaining low dust concentrations in these areas. In this study at a mineral processing plant, to reduce respirable dust concentrations in a control room which had no cleaning system for intake air, a filtration/pressurization system originally designed for enclosed cabs was modified and installed. Eighty-seven percent of submicron particles were reduced by the system at static conditions, meaning that greater than eighty-seven percent of respirable dust particles should be reduced. The particle size distribution for respirable dust particles are greater than for submicron particles, and filtration systems usually are more efficient in capturing the larger particles. A positive pressure near 0.02 inches of water gauge was produced which is an important component for an effective system and minimizes particles (e.g. dust) from entering into the room. The intake airflow was around 118 cfm, which is greater than the airflow suggested by ASHRAE for acceptable indoor air quality. INTRODUCTION Chronic overexposure to respirable silica dust (particle diameter < 10 microns) leads to a progressive lung disease known as silicosis. Workers who develop silicosis have an increased incidence of lung cancer and pulmonary disorders. In June 1997, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (1) found sufficient evidence to declare that inhaled crystalline silica in the form of quartz and cristobalite is carcinogenic. Mining is one of the leading industries for occupational exposure to silica dust (2-7). Control rooms located in dusty areas in some mines are of particular concern (8). Many mineral processing operations utilize operator’s compartments and/or control rooms to house workers who are performing particular job functions. Most industrial processing mills have rooms where a worker looks out over the facility and has direct control over the product flow throughout the entire building. In addition, primary crusher operators are often located in a compartment from which they are able to view the primary crushing function. Their job is to control when trucks dump into the primary jaw crusher and the rate of feed of the ore from the hopper into the crusher. Many of these control rooms and operator booths do not have filtration systems capable of cleaning air entering the control room or booth, which can result in elevated concentrations of dust in the room or booth. To reduce the dust concentrations in these rooms, it would make sense to clean the entering air with filtration/pressurization units similar to those proven to provide a clean environment in enclosed cabs."
