Mining can be categorized as a hazardous activity, considering some factors such as environmental conditions with a considerable presence of humidity, suspended particles, or falling rocks have affected the severity and number of accidents compared with other economic sectors. The industry analyzes incident reports to narrow the rate of severe injuries and fatalities, conducting root cause analysis and identifying leading indicators. As the International Council on Mining and Metals noted, the vast trove of incident data is not analyzed as much as possible due to a lack of analytics expertise at mine sites. However, machine learning could solve the problem of analyzing all the incident data in a no-timeconsuming way, considering the abundant data, and without using expert personnel in data science. Thus, a Convolutional Neural Network and a Naïve Bayes model were introduced to perform classification in the MSHA database. The database from 2020 consists of 60 fields to describe safety incidents; these fields include mine I.D., accident date, subunit (mill, surface), material extracted, and other metadata.

The following paper is an evaluation of the instrumentation programs on recent Corps of Engineers tunneling projects. The authors have first-hand knowledge of the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex (NCMC) Expansion Project. Information on the other projects comes from conversations with those directly involved in the instrumentation programs and from referenced reports. The specific objectives of this paper are: (1) to state the purposes of the instrumentation programs, (2) to discuss the benefits gained from the instrumentation, and (3) to present conclusions from this study that will provide guidance to those planning instrumentation on future projects. Presentation of detailed descriptions of the projects and instrumentation data is limited to that necessary to the accomplishment of the above objectives. NCMC EXPANSION PROJECT The NCMC is located at a depth of approximately 800 feet in Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs, Colorado. For the current expansion project new chambers were mined to accommodate a new diesel power plant and associated cooling and air handling equipment. During 1971 some 55,000 yd3 of granite were mined through existing access tunnels for this expansion. A model of the new excavation is shown in Figure 1. The light shaded areas are new openings, and the dark areas are portions of the existing operating complex. The large chamber to the right is the power plant chamber and has a span of 67 ft, a height of 50 ft, and a length of 172 ft. The other large chamber on the lower level is the cooling tower chamber and has a span of 38 ft, a height of 45 ft and a length of 185 ft. A significant wollastonite resource has been discovered and evaluated near Seeley's Bay in southeastern Ontario. The deposit occurs in Grenville Frontenac Terrane granulite facies rock within a calc-silicate skarn in contact with Proterozoic-age gabbro. The steeply-dipping and tightly-folded wollastonite skarn beds are interlayered with diopside and quartz-feldspar skarns in a southwest-plunging synclinorium. More than 9 million tonnes of a drill-proven and inferred resource grading 41 % wollastonite has been identified, as well as an additional 3 million tonnes grading 30%. Mineralogical and process test work with the wollastonite from this deposit has demonstrated the potential to produce a high purity, high aspect ratio wollastonite product.

One of the principal responsibilities of the California State Geologist is to provide local governments with maps and information regarding mineral resource occurrences within their jurisdiction. The primary objective of this effort is to furnish basic data that is essential in planning for and accommodating wise development of mineral deposits that are important to the economic well-being of the region, state, and nation. Local government agencies are required by law to incorporate the information provided by the State Geologist into their general plans and formulate mineral resource management policies that emphasize conservation and development of mineral deposits. The Mineral Land Classification program was initiated by the State Geologist in 1977 under authority of the California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA). To date, about 33,000 square miles of land have been classified for mineral resource potential. Most of the mineral land mapping has been conducted in three principal areas: (1) metropolitan areas of the state where urban encroachment has greatly diminished available supplies of construction aggregate; (2) Sierra Nevada foothills, a region that is undergoing dramatic population increases; and (3) the Mojave Desert and Great Basin regions, where large Federal land withdrawals are pending that could preclude mining. Mineral land classification studies address the overall mineral potential of a region through the identification of local and regional geologic factors that control or influence the formation of mineral deposits. These studies are field-intensive surveys that enable project geologists to gain first-hand knowledge about the nature and distribution of mineral deposits in a given area and portray that information accurately in map form. This paper summarizes the progress made in the Mineral Land Classification program in the metropolitan, Sierra Nevada foothills, and the Mojave Desert/Great Basin regions of California. Selected projects from each area are discussed in detail.

Cominco Snip is a 60: 40 joint venture of Cominco Ltd. and Prime Resources Group Inc. Cominco manages the operation. The mine site is located in a narrow mountain valley where Bronson Creek enters the Iskut River in Northwestern British Columbia. Access is by air only to the company's 1,500 meter airstrip. Milling at a designed feed rate of 300 tpd began on schedule in January 1991. Tonnage and gold production in the form of bullion bars from the gravity circuit and gold bearing float concentrate have exceeded design forecast. This presentation will examine many of the factors that influenced the final plant design inclusive of exploration findings, bench scale and pilot plant test results, environmental and social considerations, capital and projected operating costs and product transportation alternatives such as the operation's Hovercraft.

The following paper presents the results of geostatistical studies of the selected hard-coal deposits in Poland. Geostatistical methods were applied mainly to the characterization of variability structure of the coal seams thicknesses as well as sulphur and ash contents in the coals. Results imply that the accuracy of coal reserves estimations can be improved if kriging method is applied. Kriging allows predicting more precisely the values of such parameters as thickness and sulphuring content.

The heap leaching process has developed into a low-cost method for recovering copper, gold and silver from large and small deposits of low-grade ore. The earliest known heap leaching process with chemicals occurred in about 1752 and is attributed to Spanish miners percolating acid solutions through large heaps of oxide copper ore on the banks of the Rio Tinto (Ran Zyl, et al., 1988). In 1969, US Bureau of Mines research¬ers proposed the use of dilute alkaline cyanide solutions as a low-cost means for recovering gold values from low-grade ore containing micrometer-sized particles of gold (Miners News, 1991). The modern-day heap leaching process typically involves the percolation of leach solutions through controlled lifts of stacked, low-grade ore (crushed, aggomerated or run-of-mine) in a heap for chemical extraction of precious and base metals into solution (Fig. 1). The enriched (pregnant) solution is collected by gravity flow in lined basins, sumps and ponds for processing and recovery of the target metals (copper, gold and silver). The barren solution from the recovery facilities is recirculated to the heap, along with chemical reagents and makeup water, for containment of all process solutions in an enclosed and environmentally sound system. This involves the use of low-permeability liner systems beneath the heap leach stacks to maximize solution recovery and protect the underlying ground water (Fig. 1). This article discusses the typical heap leach liner systems currently used by mining companies in North America. The most successful heap leach pad liner systems from past precious metal operations generally include an underlying, low-permeability soil bedding material; a geomembrane liner, and an overlying protective cover fill.

The 1997 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The RETC is a biennial event jointly sponsored by SME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Conference attendance was 573 members, nonmembers and students, an increase of seven attendees from the 1995 conference in San Francisco, CA. Exhibitors occupied 51 booths at the Las Vegas RETC. The 1997 conference encompassed 58 presentations in 15 sessions. Participants were given details on achievements and advances that have resulted in new design solutions, alternative work practices and increased productivity within the industry. The page at the end of this article tells how to get your copy of the RETC proceedings, either hardbound or on CD-ROM. Or, if you wish, for the first time a CD-ROM is available with the complete RETC proceedings from 1972 to 1997. This two-disk, archival volume has key-word search capability, is in portable file format and is compatible with PC and Macintosh platforms. RETC program sessions included design and planning, ground support, tunnel boring machine (TBM) case histories, conventional excavation, new technology, difficult ground, geotechnical, shafts and raises, future/special projects, new Austrian tunneling method, international projects, soft ground case histories and water and gas. What follows are highlights of some of the RETC presentations.

Understanding ore variability is a key factor in the geometallurgical analysis of a deposit and is beneficial to process development and mine planning. Ore variability is a function of the mineralogy of a deposit, in terms of both ore and gangue minerals and their textural relationships. This study integrates optical microscopy and quantitative mineral analysis to characterize the mineralogy and texture from 13 samples from different lithologic units at the Bingham Canyon Mine. The analysis identified several parameters, such as modal mineralogy, alteration assemblages, distribution of mineral phases and alteration assemblages and microfracture and void space distribution. These parameters can have an impact on the materials’ behavior during processing. This study demonstrates that quantitative mineralogical analysis can provide detailed information for improved understanding of ore variability.

Mining operations of Freeport Indonesia (FI) are located approximately 4 degrees -6' south latitude, 137 -7' east longitude in Irian Jaya the eastern most state of Indonesia (Figure I). The mines are located approximately 96 km (60 miles) from coast in the Carstenz Mountain range. The ore bodies are between 2900 and 4000 meters (9500 and 13 000 ft) elevation.

This chapter deals with the use of industrial minerals in insulating materials used to control our thermal and acoustical environment. There are numerous products on the market used for thermal and acoustical insulation; they consume substantial quantities of a variety of industrial minerals. Following is a brief review of the theory and function of insulating materials. Acoustics is the science of sound, and architectural acoustics deals with sound in buildings. If this definition is broadened to include transportation vehicles, it is this end use for which acoustical insulations are primarily manufactured. Sound is defined as the auditory sensation in the ear, or the disturbance in a medium which causes this sensation. Acoustical insulation is used to reduce or eliminate noise, defined as unwanted sound. Noise control may be accomplished by the reduction of sound radiation at the source, by utilizing sound reducing construction methods such as staggered studs, etc., to control sound transmission, or by using sound absorbing material on walls, ceilings, and floors (Rossing, 1985). Acoustical insulation functions by absorbing the energy in sound waves in a porous material. As the sound waves penetrate the pores, they are dissipated by reducing the amplitude of vibration of the air molecules by contact with the pore walls, with subsequent conversion of the sound energy to heat energy. Acoustical insulation is generally highly porous, 1.3 cm or greater in thickness, and has interconnected pores. Acoustical insulating materials include fibrous vegetable or mineral matter and cellular organic and inorganic material, such as natural or manufactured foams (Sabine and Moulder, 1979). Acoustical materials are most commonly porous boards and tiles, which are often composite materials with perforated facing. Roof insulation board and lightweight concrete can also contribute to the absorption of noise. Thermal insulation is defined as material used to control the flow of heat. It may be used for heat control from low cryogenic temperatures (below -100°C) to in excess of 2 200°C for applications such as ablative shields for spacecraft. Heat transfer occurs by conduction, convection, or radiation. Conduction is the transfer of heat without the movement of the conducting medium, as through a metal. Heat convection through a liquid or gas takes place by movement of the medium. Forced convection is the basis for heating and cooling equipment, utilizing pumps or blowers to transfer the thermally conditioned fluid. Free or natural convection occurs due to density differences in the fluid. Radiation is the transfer of energy in space (Eckert, 1985). Conduction of heat through a solid is reduced by insulating the body with foams, or fibrous or small celled granular material. Heat transfer through a gas (convection) is controlled by creating many small pores which inhibit the movement of the fluid, substituting a gas of low thermal conductivity, or evacuating the space. Heat radiation can be reduced by the use of materials that reflect or absorb the energy (Glaser, 1967). Thermal insulating materials may be vegetable or mineral fibers, organic or inorganic particles, or foams with small pores, generally used to form a low density thermal barrier. They may be blocks, poured lightweight cementitious materials, bricks, etc.

INTRODUCTION My first major involvement on a rock mine slope stability project was in 1966 after I had become a principal of Golder Brawner & Associates in Vancouver, Canada. I received a request from Kennecott to evaluate two serious rock slope failures adjacent to the concentrator on their British Columbia molybdenum property near Alice Arm, BC, which was under construction. A rock slope up to 200 ft* high had been excavated at a design angle of 700. The inspection indicated that several large blocks of about 1000 cu yd each had failed on steeply inclined joint surfaces. Stability was reduced by extensive seepage caused by heavy rainfall. In addition, considerable overbreak had occurred, indicating excessive blasting had been used to excavate the slope. A program was developed to rock bolt potentially unstable blocks that could slide on dipping discontinuities. Some rock was scaled back to the inclined joints, and drain holes were drilled to reduce water pressures. The project was completed successfully and within reasonable economics. As a result of this success, enquiries were received regarding other mining projects. This indicated the potential demand for rock slope engineering. As a result, I took one month off to meet and discuss rock mechanics and slope stability with various people internationally. These included D. Coates in Canada, E. Hoek in England, K. John and L. Mueller in Germany, M. Rocha in Portugal, and the US Bureau of Mines in Denver, CO. Early misconceptions Based on involvement in projects during the next few years, it was concluded that there were a considerable number of misconceptions that existed among some geologists and mining engineers dealing with surface rock mechanics. Some of these included: • Water is a lubricant. This is incorrect. Water reduces the shear strength along discontinuities due to buoyancy, which reduces frictional strength. It also reduces the cohesion of clayey-type rocks. • The optimum pit slope angle in rock is 45°. The optimum slope angle for safety and economics is variable and is influenced particularly by structural geology, water pressures, mine blasting practices, and the depth and degree of weathering. • The flattest angle for slope stability is dictated by the angle of repose of broken rock, about 370. Where clayey-type rocks or clayey infill in discontinuities exists, failure can occur at much flatter angles, requiring flatter slopes or artificial stabilization. • Uniaxial and triaxial tests provide the necessary shear strength parameters to design rock slopes. Most failures in rock slopes are controlled by directional discontinuities. Therefore, the direct shear test is the correct test to evaluate strength parameters for most problems.

INTRODUCTION The maximum recovery of cleaned coal at the required quality is of major concern to plant operators. However, the quantity and quality of products of coal cleaning, predicted by theoretical calculation based on washability studies and determined in the operation of actual commercial cleaning plants, will be different for each coal. Therefore, during the last half century, coal preparation engineers have repeatedly sought methods for evaluating the technical and economical efficiency of separating coal in coal cleaning equipment and for predicting the quantity and quality of cleaned coal produced, as well as profit- ability for the entire plant. Many formulas have been proposed by investigators to evaluate the efficiency of various coal cleaning operations. Performance criteria in use today are capable of defining all of the important aspects of a given concentrating operation; however, each criterion has certain restrictions or limitations. It is important, therefore, to understand how such formulas can be used and the problems involved in their construction. Technical Measures of Equipment/Plant Performance Conventional measures for evaluating the performance of a preparation plant are generally the same as those used to evaluate equipment performance. Measures involving separation efficiencies are influenced by the following three broadly encompassing primary factors: (1) density composition of the feed coal, (2) design characteristics of the cleaning unit, and (3) relative density of the separation. Since separation efficiencies are dependent on factors involving the nature of the coal, they are termed dependent criteria and represent a very broad technical indicator of an individual process or plant performance. Performance measures known as independent criteria are influenced mainly by quantitative errors inherent in the design and operation of the processing equipment. Economic Measures of Plant Performance True assessment of coal cleaning methods require reference to economic measures such as profitability. During the years in which technical efficiency criteria for characterizing plant performance were being improved, coal preparation engineers were also seeking appropriate economic criteria to assess plant performance. Technical and economic effectiveness of plant performance are important parameters for coal preparation flowsheet design. All Sanitary District contract documents for new tunnel construction permit the Contractor a choice of four (4) separate alternate tunnel sections. This is the result of a continuing District policy to encourage at all times the use of the most suitable construction techniques and to attract to District construction the broadest spectrum of proven capabilities. Figure 1 indicates the alternate tunnel sections allowed on District contracts as follows: 1. A horse shoe section, ribbed and lagged, and a poured reinforced concrete tunnel liner; 2. Circular section, ribbed and lagged, and a poured in place reinforced concrete tunnel liner; 3. Circular section, ribbed and lagged, and a precast reinforced concrete pipe liner grouted in place; and 4. Circular section, no temporary lining, and a precast reinforced concrete pipe liner to be jacked in place. The Sanitary District now has in operation 10,500' of 5'6" I.D. and 6,500' of 5'0" I.D. jacked tunnel. An additional 5,600' of 7'6" I.D. jacked tunnel is currently under construction.

Kobe Steel, Ltd. improved the quality of iron ore pellets for blast furnace burdens when it enlarged its blast furnaces. However. there still remained room to increase reducibility at high temperatures for better blast furnace operation. In particular, it was still necessary to lessen the reduction retardation above 1200?C. In the last few years, by employing iron ore and additives of optimum size structure, large pore pellets with a high porosity have been obtained. By using this method. Kobe Steel. Ltd. has accomplished the technology to produce pellets with remarkably high reducibility.

An extensive series of linear and rotary cutting tests were run in soft and medium strength rocks at the Earth Mechanics Institute of the Colorado School of Mines to investigate the possibility of very high speed mechanical excavation for tunnel, raise, and shaft boring. The results of these tests demonstrate that cutter penetrations of 38.1 mm (1.5 inch) and cut spacings up to 228.6 mm (9 inch) are possible in such rock without exceeding the bearing capabilities of the cutters. It was also demonstrated in vertical boring tests that continuous excavation rates up to 38.1 m/hr (125 ft/hr) can be achieved with state-of-the-art technology provided sufficient thrust and torque is available. A predictor model for soft rocks was also developed using the test data. Analysis of this model shows that the errors between the predicted and observed cutter normal loads appear to be independent of cutter diameter, tip width, cut spacing, and depth of penetration. This suggests that the structure of the model is correct with respect to these variables. An analysis of the coefficients in the model was also made and a correlation found between the principal coefficient and Unconfined Compressive Strength. The second coefficient in the model was found to be similar in magnitude to rock properties such as Brazilian Tensile Strength, Shear Strength and Point Load Index.

We've used direct current resistivity (DC), electromagnetic (EM), induced polarization (IP), and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) geoelectrical methods to study mine dumps. The results reflect lithology, pore water saturation, and dissolved solids in the pore water. If the pore water has a pH less than 5, conductivity maps can indicate acid generating potential. IP measurements can help distinguish mineralogy in mine dumps, especially concentrations of sulfide minerals. EM and DC can help locate acidic/high TDS groundwater associated with mine dumps. GPR methods failed at the sites we studied in the West. Our own conclusions are augmented by those from the recent literature.

Starting in 1967 two major hydroelectric power projects have been implemented in East Africa viz. Kafue Gorge in Zambia and Great Ruaha in Tanzania. The two projects have similar characteristics and each consists of an underground power plant, a dam in connection with the power plant and a reservoir dam. The power plants are both designed and constructed according to principles applied in Scandinavia for a long time. Each consists of a headrace of a horizontal unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 10 km, vertical penstock shafts, machinery and transformer halls in large rock caverns and a tailrace of an unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 1 km. The head of the power plant of Kafue Gorge is 400 m, Great Ruaha 175 m, the capacity is 900 MW and 200 MW respectively. Both plants were executed in one stage, but building and erection works were made in two stages. However, the power plants show some interesting differences in design. The power plants are briefly described in the following, special regard being paid to the excavation works. This paper describes work carried out to obtain a heat balance in the B3 shaft longwall stope at Blyvooruitzicht gold mine. Recordings were made of the temperature of the air and chilled water entering and leaving the section during three periods, August 1 September 1977, November 1 December 1977 and March 1978. These recordings, together with numerous other measurements were used to determine the rate at which heat was being removed from the section by the various fluids flowing through the section. The rate at which heat was entering the section was then calculated, by considering each source in turn. These two sets of figures made it possible to draw up a heat balance, and also obviously gave vital information on the magnitudes of the various heat sources and on the methods used to remove heat. In general reasonable heat balances were obtained, the errors being in the range -6 per cent to +22 per cent.

The Blacklick Creek Watershed Association was awarded a $158,000 Growing Greener grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in 2002 for the design and construction of a sulfate reducing bioreactor (SRBR) cell to treat acidic discharge from the Judy 14 abandoned underground coal mine near Indiana, PA. The vertical flow SRBR was designed to treat 38 liters per minute of MIW containing elevated concentrations of aluminum and iron. Other treatment systems at this site plugged due to aluminum precipitates; this problem did not occur in the SRBR. The bioreactor has been periodically overloaded with flows up to six times the design rate. To date, the only maintenance performed on the unit has been the addition of hay to the surface of the unit in response to less than expected performance. The periodic hay additions appear to have restored the SRBR to nearly post-construction levels. Since construction, the SRBR has treated about 136,000 cubic meters (36 million US gallons) of MIW.
