Since 1951, Molycorp has operated the Mountain Pass Mine in San Bernardino County, California to extract fourteen lanthanide elements, or rare earths, from a carbonate ore body. Wastes generated by the open pit mining operation consist of overburden and 1800 tpd of tailings. The tailings are classified as Group B mining wastes by California regulators. Paste tailings is one of several alternatives being considered during the permitting process for future mine operations. This paper presents the findings of study to assess the feasibility of using paste tailings to develop an unsaturated tailings stack instead of dilute slurry discharge behind a tailings dam.

Fluoride activation has been evaluated by Hallimond tube flotation of collophanite in terms of fluoride concentration, conditioning time, pH, and temperature. The results reveal that efficient oleate flotation of collophanite can be achieved by fluoride activation. Experimental results of fluoride adsorption by collophanite suggest that, at low fluoride concentration, a fluoroapatite-type compound may form on the collophanite surface by chemisorption of fluoride ions at calcium sites. At high fluoride concentration, calcium fluoride appears to form at the collophanite surface involving a surface precipitation phenomenon. The formation of CaF2 on the surface of fluoride-treated collophanite is further substantiated by the FTIR spectroscopic measurements, which suggest a metathetic exchange with phosphate from the collophanite lattice during the surface precipitation process.

The proposed National Underground Science Laboratory will be housed in the former Homestake Gold Mine at Lead, South Dakota. Uses will include underground neutrino experiments that must be shielded by several thousand feet of rock, as well as ground-water research in fracture-flow environments, and investigation of the microbiology of extreme environments. The Homestake Mine has about 300 miles of underground workings. Seepage of ground water into the mine openings is approximately 500 gallons per minute. Average annual precipitation in the northern Black Hills is approximately 28 inches per year. The majority of this becomes surface-water runoff or evapotranspiration, with little ground-water recharge because of the low permeability of the Precambrian rocks in the area. Dewatering of the workings over the 125 years of operation of the mine has influenced the subsurface hydrology of the 8,000-footdeep mine.

Cumulophyric feldspars, of varying morphology, carry myrmekitic quartz interstitially between microperthitic feldspar lamellae. The size, coarseness, and morphology of these crystals, together with concordant foliation features constitutes evidence that they are a product of primary crystallization, formed prior to eruption from a vent. These crystals occur preferentially along 2 - 5 mm thick tan, vesicular to compressed alteration bands intercalated with more densely welded light grey bands. In perlite with quartz at or below a 0.1% threshold, megascopic feldspars are less than 1%. Perlite with quartz above this level has megascopic feldspar concentrations >3%, typically in the 5-20% range.

Injection of alkaline waste-lime slurry was performed at a West Virginia surface coal mine site, to attempt neutralization of acid springs by an alkaline recharge method. Deep trenching (>5 m) using an excavator yielded the most effective injection into the aquifer. Water from two springs, 90 m from the deep trench, showed 70%-80% reduction in acidity in response to injection. Neutralization persisted >170 days after treatment, with pH between 5.1-5.7 and metal acidity from 25-60 mg/L. A minor fraction of lime introduced was consumed. The sustained neutralization is attributed to reaction of acid water with subsurface lime, entrained below the wafer table by macropore infiltration. Characteristics of groundwater transport are critical in determining recharge structure location.

A late-1980 airborne EM/magnetic method test over the State Line kimberlite area of Colorado-Wyoming shows weak but recognizable anomalous responses to the known pipes. The magnetic survey indicates the presence of several shallow subsurface bodies adjacent to the known kimberlites, which are interpreted as possible blind diatremes. The survey data, in profile and contoured map form, has been correlated with geological map information available at the time. It can serve as the basis for reexamining kimberlite distribution in the area, taking into account geological findings during the recent work on known bodies.

Microsoft Excel based ultimate pit limit (UPL) optimiser has been developed to determine the greatest economic value of an orebody. UPL manipulates a given geological block model to define an ultimate pit limit using either the moving cone, method or Korobov algorithm or Lerchs-Grossman technique. UPL is designed to be an adjunct to MS Excel; the cells in Excel are excellent analogue to the blocks in a geological model, providing X-Y dimensions in an easily viewable and editable state. The use of individual worksheets within an Excel workbook provides the necessary depth to a 3-D block model.

The upper Animas River watershed is affected by metal-rich drainage from abandoned mines and by natural weathering of mineralized bedrock. To investigate the importance of natural metal sources, surface waters were sampled in a minimally mined but intensely altered area of the watershed. Water chemistry was strongly controlled by the degree of bedrock alteration. Propylitically altered rocks, which contain calcite, produced neutral waters with low metal concentrations, whereas quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration was characterized by acid-sulfate type waters with high metal concentrations. A mass-balance approach was used to estimate natural metal sources, which accounted for 56-905 of the dissolved metal load discharging from the study area

During the past 20 years, methods of multivariate statistical analysis have been developed on mainframe computers for the integration of geological, geophysical, geochemical and LANDSAT data in mineral resource appraisal. At present, it is becoming increasingly feasible to perform mathematical image analysis of digitized patterns on microcomputers. This has led us to develop a new method of statistical pattern integration for mineral exploration. In this paper, the new method is used to outline, by means of posterior probabilities, exploration targets within small areas of which the prior probabilities for occurrence of new mineral deposits had been estimated by multivariate analysis.

Pennsylvania has 4,000 km (2,500 miles) of streams that do not meet water-quality standards due to acid mine drainage (AMD), making AMD the greatest cause of water pollution in the state. The problem is mainly caused by abandoned coal mines. To abate AMD, Pennsylvania is using a watershed-based approach that includes remining as a key component of a comprehensive restoration strategy. The Tangascootack Creek Water-shed was targeted for AMD restoration through remining. Geologic mapping and overburden data were analyzed using Earth Vision software to identify areas of coal reserves that could be remined to improve water quality. Incentives are offered to encourage mining in these designated areas.

The determination of the precision of reserve estimates (tonnage, grade, quantity of metal) for an entire deposit or a large block in a deposit has received some attention in the early developments of geostatistics. A general formula to derive the estimation variance of any linear combination of a large number of sample values can be found in any geostatistical textbook like David (1977) or Journel and Huijbregts (1978). A particular case of this general formula is of course the kriging of the entire deposit. However, besides the technical difficulty of dealing with many samples the application of this formula necessitates the knowledge of the covariance between any two samples in the deposit. This is quite unrealistic in the usual case of limited stationarity where the assumption of a covariance or a variogram just function of the distance vector between two samples is only valid for samples within the same area of restricted size.

The HydroFloat technology was specifically developed to upgrade phosphate sands that are too coarse (>0.6 mm) to be efficiently recovered by conventional flotation methods. In this novel process, classified feed is suspended in a fluidized bed that has been aerated using an external sparging system. The air bubbles selectively attach to particles that have been made hydrophobic through the addition of a fatty acid collector. The teetering effect of the fluidized bed forces the low-density bubble-particle aggregates into the overflow, while hydrophilic particles are rejected as a high solids content underflow Since the HydroFloat is actually a density separator, the process can treat much coarser feeds than would be possible using traditional flotation processes. In addition, the high solids content of the teeter bed promotes bubble-particle attachment and reduces the cell volume required to achieve a given capacity. This paper presents test data from ongoing pilot-scale trials of the HydroFloat cell in the phosphate industry.

The selective recovery of fine particles by flotation has been a long-standing problem in the mineral processing industry. Fundamental studies carried out at Virginia Tech since 1980 have suggested that many of the problems encountered in separating fine particles can be alleviated by using significantly smaller air bubbles than those used in conventional flotation processes. The main advantage of using smaller bubbles is found in an increased recovery rate, which can be attributed to an improved bubble-particle collision efficiency. This concept has been applied in column flotation as a means of improving flotation kinetics. A computer simulator has been developed to better study the effects of various parameters on flotation column performance. The simulation results suggest that the use of small bubbles and tall columns improves the recovery of fine particles while a judicious use of wash water greatly improves product quality. Information collected as a result of this analysis has been applied in developing scale-up relationships for column flotation.

Steady-state material balances calculated from data measured at various locations around process units are useful for many purposes, such as metallurgical accounting, on-line control, and the development of mathematical models. Often it is possible to calculate material balances by several independent procedures when excess measurement information, i.e., redundant data, is available. Clearly, if the data were collected without measurement errors, a theoretical condition never found in practice, all material balances calculated from redundant data would be in agreement. The real situation is that error exists in practical measurements, so that the results of material balances determined from available optional procedures differ. Consequently, best fit computational procedures to improve the material balances by taking measurement errors into account have been formulated. Such procedures can be used also to judge whether measurements are grossly in error due to either faulty observations or defective data sensing devices. A variety of mathematical techniques are available which serve to adjust raw data. The adjusted data permit mass balancing that does not depend on the computational method. To illustrate the need for an adjustment procedure, Table 1 shows a raw data set acquired around the Brenda Mines Ltd. No. 4 grinding circuit shown schematically in Fig. 1. The contribution of the various outby sources to the contamination of the panel intake air has been the subject of a relatively small number of studies. In this paper, after a brief review of past studies, results from recent experiments on rates of contamination of intake air by outby dust sources are presented. Present study indicates that each outby source by itself may not be a major contributor. The loading point in the continuous miner section did not appear to be of major concern from contamination point of view. Belt entry including transfer point contributes significantly to the intake air dust level, though reentrainment was not a major source of dust. In longwall panels, the stageloader-crusher was the most dominant source. The panel-to-main belt transfer point was not a major source. Taken collectively, the contribution of all outby sources can be significant. In one longwall section, at the beginning of the longwall face, the contribution of all the outby sources and the headgate cut-out operation was observed to be about 80% of the permissible exposure limit (2 mg/m3). In modem high production longwalls, the application of effective dust control measures to reduce the dust generated from the outby sources is essential to achieve compliance with the dust standards.
