The paper discusses the use of machine learning (ML) to develop a predictive model for determining the location and size of underground mine fires using simulated ventilation data. The study highlights the importance of prompt fire location determination for effective firefighting strategies and reducing injury risks. The ML model was trained with simulated data and achieved an accuracy score of 0.920, which improved to 0.962 by grouping closely connected airways.

The expanded role which coal has been assigned in the energy future of the United States has raised numerous policy questions. The very complexity of these questions makes them suitable to analysis by econometric models. However, as the Wall Street Journal indicated in its recent article, business' success with such models have been mixed. I have been asked to present my views as to how coal producers can use such models and in what ways the industry is likely to be impacted by such models. I do not presume to speak for the whole coal industry, but only to share with you the personal observations of one who has worked "both sides of the street", having been employed' both by government and a consulting firm prior to joining the coal industry. In my opinion, the use of econometric models to analyze the coal industry will impact the coal producers in two main ways. First, their use by government will have a profound impact on future government policies related to the mining, transportation and utilization of coal. Second, such models, when properly calibrated and refined, may become useful tools for the coal producers in doing market research and long-range planning. While the former has already begun to impact on the operating environment or the coal industry, the latter is still in the embryo stage.

The catalytic effect of ferrous ion in the industrial biohydrometallurgical heap and dump leaching processes is explained. During the bacterial leaching of metal sulfides, ferric ion will partly be hydrolyzed and a variety of sols, gels, amorphous and/ or crystalline mono- and polynuc- lear hydroxo- and sulfato complex species formed, especially by olation and aggregation reactions. There are many problems associated with these iron precipitates especially in the purification of leach solutions. The present study will discuss the iron precipitation reactions; gives kinetic and thermodynamic evaluations of the effect of temperature on pyrite and ferrous iron oxidation; and reports on the tolerance of heavy metal ion concentrations by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans.

Certain deposits of incoherent materials which are near the surface and exploitable by open-pit mining may be characterized in real time before they are mined through an analysis of ground-surface imagery. If the slice to be stripped is not overly thick, in fact, surface texture and color properties may be extrapolated to its entire thickness. Image analysis techniques to process ground surface images acquired in situ(or in the laboratory shortly after their acquisition) which yield pattern vectors representative of RGB color component distributions and HSB texture parameters have been developed. The techniques were applied to a mineral sandy ore deposit containing three different lithotypes. Geostatistical analyses showed that the data used to characterize the lithotypes were reliable. The correct recognition of the lithotypes was carried out using a multi-barycenter classification algorithm. Such in situ image-analysis procedures open the way to the proper selection of the ore to be mined, or the proper way for run of mine (r.o.m).processing, or the appropriate blend to be processed before or at the same time as the mining process itself is enacted.

South Coast Water District (District) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel (BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Mon-arch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,424-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch Techite gravity sewer pipeline critical to the District Sanitary Sewer Collection System that conveys 1 MGD of raw sewage to a wastewater treatment plant. The original tunnel was constructed in 1954 and the sewer line replaced in 1974. Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews have documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel within the past few years (Sancon 2003). Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline. A 50-foot section of the tunnel was determined to be in need of immediate repairs, which were carried out from January to August in 2007. This section was enlarged to a horseshoe shape and lined with shotcrete. The pipe was encased in concrete in the invert of the new enlarged cross section. Hatch Mott Mac-Donald (HMM) designed the emergency repairs, carried out an assessment of the rest of the tunnel alignment, and is currently developing a work plan for rehabilitating the entire tunnel.

Traditional fine grinding mills in mineral processing relied on the use of steel medium for particle size reduction. The successful development of the Isa Mill(a horizontal stirred mill with 3000 litres of net chamber volume and 1120 kW rated motor power)adopted a novel product separator design that has led to a major revision of medium use in fine grinding. The Isa Mill separator has also successfully operated with a wide variety of medium types such as silica sands, river gravel, smelter slag, run-of-mine ore fractions and steel shots, with size ranges from 0.5 to 10 mm. A great flexibility of the Isa Mill operations has been achieved for processing a feed as coarse as 120 um to a product as fine as 5 µm. This paper discusses the performance of two inert grinding media used in the Isa Mills in Mount Isa Mines of Australia for processing galena and sphalerite bearing ores to below 10 microns. They are the copper reverberatory furnace slag (CRFS)and the heavy medium plant rejects (HMPR). A methodology was also demonstrated for comparing the medium performance and for scaling up the Isa Mills from a 1.5-litre laboratory batch mill to a full scale 3000-litre mill.

The treatment of concentrates for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials has been developed at Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. Historically, conventional pyrometallurgical methods have been used for to recover values from refractory precious metal materials. However, enhanced environmental awareness has worked to constrain typical refractory material processing methods. This hinders and limits the ability of established smelting or roasting technologies to fill the needs of new sources of refractory materials. An alternative is to treat refractory precious metal bearing materials by hydro metallurgical techniques. These methods are considered more environmentally appropriate since they do not produce gaseous pollutants like sulfur dioxide. Industrially, Sunshine Mining and Refining Company employs hydrometallurgical technology to process refractory precious metal materials. The Sunshine antimony leach uses a mixture of sulfur and caustic under ambient pressure and boiling conditions. The Sunshine oxidation leach uses a mixture of sulfuric acid and a minimal amount of sodium nitrite under relatively mild oxygen pressure and temperature conditions. These conditions result in a nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach. Since hydrometallurgical technologies provide industrially proven processing options for many types of refractory precious metal containing materials, their usage should be considered. Ample work has been conducted to prove the effectiveness of Sunshine refractory processing technologies on various materials. This has included platinum group metal materials, refractory gold concentrates, silver materials and indium materials. In some cases, complete process flowsheets have been designed to recover both base and precious metals from these materials and to treat the generated waste streams in environmentally sound manners.

The Piedras Verdes copper mine is a new run-of-mine (ROM), heap leach, solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) operation located 21 km (13 miles) north-northwest of the town of Alamos in the state of Sonora, Mexico. The Piedras Verdes copper mine is wholly owned by Frontera Copper Corp. (FCC), a Canadian corporation, through its 100 percent beneficial interest in Cobre del Mayo S.A. de C.V. (CDM), a Mexican registered company. The January 2008, minable reserves were estimated to be 193.6 Mt (213 million st) at a grade of 0.36 percent copper. The overall recovery of total copper was estimated to be 61.9 percent. The property has an additional 17-year life and is designed to produce 31.7 kt/a (70 million lbs/year) of cathode copper. Construction commenced in early October 2005. The first copper cathode was produced 12 months later at a total capital cost of $100 million. Elevations at the site range from 150 to 300 m (490 to 985 ft) above sea level. The area has excellent infra-structure in the form of towns, power, water, roads, rail, airfield and access to the deepwater port of Guaymas (Fig. 1). The surrounding area is also famous for its numerous polymetallic (lead, zinc, copper, silver and gold) epithermal veins. Some of these were mined for more than 200 years and provided the wealth on which the town of Alamos was built. The original village of Piedras Verdes was located in the area of the proposed openpit mine and, consequently, it was necessary to construct a new townsite 6 km (3.7 miles) to the south before project development could commence. The new town site (Fig. 2), complete with power and water supplies, roads, sewer system, schools, clinic and recreational facilities, was completed and occupied by 49 families in September 2005. CDM received its remaining permits from the Mexican environmental authorities on Sept. 20, 2005. This enabled the company to proceed with full-scale development. CDM owns or controls 27 mining concessions covering the resource. Surface rights to the Piedras Verdes project were controlled by four Ejidos (communal agrarian and/or ranching societies) and five individual landowners. CDM has acquired all surface rights necessary for its mining operations and associated facilities either through outright purchase or long term lease agreements.

The purpose of this paper is to translate a mining company's "Corporate Objectives" into usable and practical guidelines for long term mine design and production scheduling. These guidelines are required to ensure that both operating and development properties are designed and economically ranked on the same basis, and with the "current" Corporate Objectives in mind. Secondly, if both management and mining engineers have a better understanding of the cause and effect of corporate policies, then penalties and risks associated with various Corporate Objectives can be put into better perspective for management. Corporate Objectives, relative to usable guidelines for either short and/or long term mine planning, could be defined as one or more of the following four objectives: 1) Maximize the recovery of the economic portion of the defined geologic resources, and hence, maximize total non-discounted project cash flows and profits (most common approach in mine design), 2) Maximize the Net Present Value (NPV) of the after-tax cash flows from each existing or proposed project, either on an individual basis or in concert with other projects, including downstream processing facilities (primary method used to judge relative investment merit of a proposed development or operating concept), 3) Limit short and long term capital expenditures to a defined ceiling, 4) Maximize product output for the existing facilities in the short term, or conversely, keep commodity production at a constant level for a series of years.

A coal's size distribution, clay content and moisture content can affect its handling behavior, but the combined effects of these properties and the effects of other properties are not known. Research underway at CQ Inc.' s (formerly EPRI' S) Coal Quality Development Center (CQOC) and at Iowa State University (ISU) will answer these questions as part of a four-year project to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals. This paper will present preliminary data from the first year of the project, which focused on obtaining data on the chemical and physical properties of various coals and their measured handling properties. Additionally, size, ash and moisture analyses and shear test data for several coals used at one power plant will be presented along with correlations between these physical and chemical properties and the measured handling properties. These data lead to the conclusion that, while moisture content-is the most important variable, the amount of -325M (-0.044 mm) coal fines is a significant factor in determining coal handling behavior.

Perhaps the most significant development in China's base metal sector is the discovery of major copper porphyries in northern Jiangxi Province and the adjacent southern Anhui Province. At the center of the new exciting district is the proposed Dexing copper complex, located some 350 km east of Nanchang, the provincial capital of Jiangxi. This project represents China's first attempt to put together a major large-scale open-pit operation, comparable in magnitude to Arizona porphyry operations. With the aid of Fluor Mining and Metals, the Chinese plan to develop a 135-175 kt/d open-pit mine, a matching large-scale mill, and the infrastructure needed to accommodate the big operations. An operation of this magnitude would significantly reduce China's import requirements by some 75%. China imports of the red metal are running around 200 kt/a. Under the direction of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, the Chinese are currently operating a 10-kt/d mine and mill with equipment primarily of Chinese origin. Dexing engineers told ME that they are considering a possible scale-up to 20 kt/d. How this effort will ultimately jell with the major expansion program is largely a matter of conjecture. Fluor Mining and Metals received a $10-million contract in December 1978 to develop a preliminary engineering and design program. While the original plans called for a 175-kt/d capacity complex, the Chinese subsequently decided to scale it down somewhat. The current proposal is around a 135 kt/d, which would in- elude the existing operation, according to Dexing engineers. Completion of the engineering and design phase is expected by March 1980 and a go-ahead decision will likely be made at that time. The value of the engineering and construction contract is estimated between $800 million and $1 billion. At right, mined ore is dumped 150 m down the mountain to a holding pocket below for rail haulage to the processing plant. Below, a Chinese miner tackles the universal problem of hard toes in the pit with a jack leg. Reserves and Early History The Dexing mineralization consists of three principal ore bodies, including the Chushahung on the north mountain, and the Tungchang and Fuchiawu on the south mountain. Combined ore reserves are estimated by mine geologists at 1.7 Gt of 0.4-0.5% copper. As is characteristic of porphyries, the ore contains important associated values of molybdenum, rhenium, pyrite, gold, and silver. There is also some secondary calcocite and bornite with an oxidized capping. Historically, copper was recovered with iron from the pregnant solutions emanating from the Tungchang deposit as early as the Tang Dynasty (700 AD). Effective mine operation demands that the right people have the right information at the right time. Caterpillar's Mining and Earthmoving Technology System (METS) meets this demand by providing "real-time" information transfer between the mine offices and machines equipped with the Caterpillar Computer Aided Earthmoving System (CAES). Transfers of mine plans from the mine planning software to CAES-equipped machines give operators access to current mine plans within minutes of their creation. Additionally, office personnel have access to a current digital terrain model (DTM) of the mine site as it is updated in "real-time" by CAES-equipped machines. METS provides mine personnel in operations, planning, and management the information they need when they need it.

Historically in Australia and the United States many coal mines deposited raw wash plant fines into large slurry impoundments. At the time the technology and market economics did not exist to make it viable to recover coal from these tailings. Today better technology exist to dredge and clean the tailings and there are circumstances where government regulations and market forces have come together to make coal recovery from these old tailings impoundments economically viable. This paper discusses the processes and equipment being used in tailings impoundment reclamation operations in Australia and the United States, and discusses the economic forces driving these operations.

The Cyprus Pima Mining Company's open pit operation was started in 1957 with the normal assumption that the ore reserve estimate was accurate within an acceptable range of values. At that tine reserves were law - volume (+10 million tons) and high grade (+1.5% Cu). Several periods of growth have brought the operation to its present production level of 55,000 tons per day of ore and +125,000 tons of waste. Over the years, a number of attempts to refine and polish the ore reserve figures have been made using a variety of established standard procedures. None of these attempts have produced results which are totally satisfactory, particularly when comparisons are made between ore reserve estimates and short to medium range production figures. Other refinements were tried using adaptations of established methods combined with computer modeling techniques. The resulting mine-model ore blocks were an improvement but they still tended to show too match tonnage of mill feed, often at too low a grade. One attempt at Kriging had only limited success. Statistical studies of operations data revealed relationships which could be used to subdivide ore blocks in much the same way as they are actually mined. Comparisons thus far between these newly developed ore blocks and production data show that the new method of evaluation yields excellent results. A new, better procedure for estimation of ore reserves apparently has been developed for the Cyprus Pima deposits. The specific procedures seem likely to have direct application to other, similar operations. The methods used to develop the procedures could be of value to still other operations.

Despite technological advancements and organizational adjustments, lost time accidents are major issues in occupational safety. However, there is very limited work that focuses on variables influencing days lost as a result of occupational accidents. In this study, decision tree and artificial neural network methods were used as machine learning techniques to investigate the impact of factors on accident lost day duration. Degree of injury, worker age, and worker activity were found to be the top three variables impacting loss of time from work. It was also identified that the mining method, location, and nature of injury had a moderate influence on duration lost due to occupational accidents. However, worker experience and ore type did not have any significant impact on the duration, which is an unexpected result. These results confirmed that some accident factors that might have a large influence on the number of mine accidents can be less critical when it comes to accident lost day duration.

There is a growing interest among transportation planners to make more use of the subsurface to preserve the landscape and make transportation more efficient and economical. At the present time, utilization of the underground for transportation facilities is severely restrained by the adverse environmental impact and high construction costs. However, recent studies performed by the United States Department of Transportation indicate that, in spite of such problems, the volume of underground construction has significantly increased during recent years and projections point to continuation of these trends(1). It is estimated that the total volume of transportation tunnel construction will exceed $4 billion in this decade. This level of Investment justifies a significant research program. Due to the common interest in transportation tunnels and to the similarities of problems encountered during their construction, the tunneling research activities of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are closely coordinated with the programs other agencies of the U. S. Department of Transportation DOT); specifically, the Federal Railroad Administration (PRA) and the Urban mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). The FHWA is responsive to the particular needs of these agencies but will benefit from the research results obtained also. In 1971, the Office of Secretary, DOT, initiated plans for an overall coordination of the DOT, FICA, UMTA, and FHWA tunneling research activities. The objectives of this effort have been to reduce tunneling costs by 30% and to increase the rate of excavation by 200% within 10 years. A novel methodology to estimate gold recovery by gravity is presented. The methodology makes use of a population balance model which represents gold liberation, breakage and classification behaviour and applies pre-concentration and recovery performance curves to gravity-recoverable gold to predict overall recovery. Derivation of the necessary parameters is explained and demonstrated using data from an actual gravity circuit and one projected application. The methodology makes it possible to estimate the performance of circuits with large gold circulating loads and relatively low unit recoveries (e.g. jigs), or with high recoveries on a bleed of the circulating load (e.g. Knelson concentrators).

Assessment of the potential for mining induced subsidence and determination of ultimate design requirements for a mining operation should be based on a number of assessment approaches. Although the rock mechanics engineer has a variety of limit equilibrium and numerical modeling tools available for assessment and prediction of subsidence effects, empirical approaches based on precedent experience provide a powerful tool for calibration/verification of analytical models and prediction of subsidence. Three separate analyses approaches have been applied to the assessment of potential subsidence for a proposed block caving mine in eastern Canada. The investigations have included an assessment of documented historical information from previous block cave mining at the site, deterministic analyses using limit equilibrium approaches to assess kinematically possible failure mechanisms, and three-dimensional numerical modeling techniques. Analyses results have been used and compared with precedent experience and documentation of subsidence behavior from previous mining to optimize the subsidence predictions for the proposed mine.

The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene and plagioclase feldspar which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals and reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilize the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. In summary due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible. Chromite recoveries can be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. Oil shale may not produce the same excitement of the gold rush days, but presently there is an "oil shale fever" among mining men. Such exotic equipment as 800-ton haul units, 75 ft. boring machines, and huge fully automatic multi-purpose jumbo drill units are only a few of the topics of conversation in the oil shale groups. I am dreaming, perhaps, but this type of exotic thinking will exuberate the advancement in mining technology and will only be tempered by the practicality and the availability of today's equipment.
