Newmont Mining Corporation owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006. Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix needed a process option to treat lowgrade transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore was being mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a run-of-mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the synergies and challenges of developing a copper L-SX/EW plant at the Phoenix copper-gold mill.

During the past few years, a completely new concept has been applied to the design of drives for operating at very low speeds. In this, the motor is supplied by a variable-frequency thyristor cyclo-converter. Today, frequency converters with practically unlimited power ratings can be constructed. The system frequency of 50 or 60 Hz is reduced to about 10 % of these values. This makes it possible to operate the synchronous motor, which has a correspondingly high number of poles, at the extremely low speed of the driven mill, i.e, without interposed gearing. The first motors of this type were built to drive ball mills in the cement industry, which are very similar to those employed for ore processing. Here, too, the tendency is to build units of ever increasing capacity. In the case of conventional drives with mechanical gearing, this involves correspondingly increasing difficulties. These difficulties have prompted various studies of the possibility of applying the new type of drive to ore mills as well, but a gearless drive has not yet been built for this application. However, gearless drives for ore mills will certainly materialize soon and it was therefore considered a logical step to report at the A.I.M.E. Conference on the experience gained with these drives in the cement industry, and on the present state of development.

Long tunnels with only one access shaft pose many program problems for logistics, combine these with the requirement to drive directly out under the seabed for 10.2 km, and the program issues become even more challenging. The Musaimeer outfall tunnel was one such tunnel and to meet and eventually improve on the planned completion date required a complex and extensive management of all tunnel logistics required to support consistent tunneling for a two-year period. This technical paper will discuss the management issues and solutions implemented to meet the challenges of the Outfall tunnel construction.

Andalusite is a member of the sillimanite group of minerals consisting of andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These minerals are the structural polymorphs of Al,Si05 (the anhydrous silicate of aluminium) and although chemically similar, they differ in physical properties due to their different crystal structures. For further information on the sillimanite group, see the chapter on Kyanite and Related Minerals that follows. The minerals are generally the products of the metamorphism of alumina-rich sediments and are found in schists, gneisses, or hornfelses, which have undergone either regional or thermal metamorphism from their original form. Sedimentary deposits may also form since the minerals are chemically and physically resistant to breakdown. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature the sillimanite group minerals convert to mullite with a resultant volume expansion and the liberation of silica. Due to the stability of the mullite formed, its high hot strength and resistance to chemical and physical erosion, they are widely used in the manufacture of refractories and special ceramics (Table 1). The reaction can be represented as follows: [ ] The worldwide use of these minerals depends to a large degree on their availability (Fig. 1). Andalusite, with its lower conversion temperature and the lowest volume expansion on being heated is the natural choice as a raw material to produce energy-saving refractories without prior calcination. The Republic of South Africa holds by far the largest minable andalusite deposits of the world, estimated at some 70 Mt of known in situ reserves. The only other large commercial production of andalusite comes from France, with known reserves of about 5 Mt. Potential new deposits are known from China, Ireland, Australia, and South America. World consumption of andalusite in special performance refractories has risen from less than 10 ktpy in 1960 to nearly 300 ktpy in 1990, which is due to cost effectiveness in many industrial applications compared to other conventional refractory products. Andalusite-based refractories have traditionally been used in Europe, South Africa, and the Far East; usage in America was limited in the past due to relatively high delivery costs and availability of other local refractory minerals. However, there is a significant trend towards greater use of andalusite in North America, thus opening new markets and replacing other traditional refractory raw materials. GEOLOGY Andalusite occurs in metamorphosed rocks of clay-like com- position, as in the andalusite-hornfelses in thermal aureoles (contact metamorphism), formed under conditions of high temperatures and low stress, and in regional metamorphic rocks, such as the andalusite-schists. These schists are mostly unconnected with definite igneous intrusions but were presumably also formed at high temperatures and under low stress. Andalusite can also appear in alluvial deposits associated with the primary deposits. At depths of 10 to 20 km, temperatures of up to 450°C might be expected. Another result of increasing depth is an increase of pressure due to the load of the rock cover. The load stresses involved in metamorphism is generally believed to lie in the range 0 to 10 000 bars. During contact metamorphism the increase in temperature is brought about by the injection of magma. The temperature reached in the country rock at some distance from the igneous body will always be less than the initial temperature of the intrusion, which is presumably less than 1 200°C, and will vary with time and distance from the contact. A simple metamorphic reaction involving dehydration of an aluminous sediment can be: [ ] At higher temperatures sillimanite would form at the expense of andalusite, while kyanite would be the mineral formed at higher pressures, as can be seen in the phase diagram of A12Si05 (Fig. 2).

The trend in both the metallic and non-metallic mining industry is toward processing increasing y higher tonnages of lower grade ores, thereby resulting in a growing interest in progressively larger volume individual machines in the flotation circuit. Because of the relatively high cost of large flotation machine development and evaluation, it is important to establish a rational basis by which the existing smaller flotation machine experience can be extrapolated to establish the configuration of the next larger family of flotation machines with a minimum of development modification in the field. This paper reviews the R&D approach used in translating smaller flotation machine experience to establish the configuration of a 1000 cu ft (2B.3 cu m) induced air machine. Internal cell hydrodynamic principles, which governed this extrapolation, and cell (liquid) surface and froth management considerations will be reviewed, and prototype machine mill tests will be summarized.

"Hard rock mines move large volumes of material, which can cause the conveyors that are essential to this movement to suffer lots of problems, including carryback, spillage, dust and belt wander. Many of these issues are created at the transfer points where the belts are loaded.This article provides an overview of the latest transfer point systems that incorporate safety and serviceability by design as well as a report on recent projects. One project is the Conveyor B Transfer at the Coeur Rochester silver mine near Lovelock, NV. Here, performance was improved with the installation of belt support cradles, engineered chute walls with external wear liner, and a compact dust collector. A second project is the improvement of belt support idlers and skirtboard sealing in a long loading zone of a conveyor under the concentrator at an Arizona copper mine.The importance of transfer pointsConveyors are essential in mine material handling. Their performance will often make the difference in mine productivity and profitability. A key to conveyor performance is the transfer points where the conveyor belt is loaded and discharges. At these transfer points, many of the problems encountered with the conveyor system are created.The problems that arise at the transfer stations include off-center and segregated loading, mistracking, blockages and plugging. And there are a variety of problems originating with fugitive material — cargo released in the form of carryback, spillage or airborne dust — that are created or exacerbated in the transfer points. These fugitive materials turn into other conveyor-related problems, including shortened component life, unplanned outages for conveyor maintenance, unexpectedly high labor costs for maintenance and cleanup, worker health and safety problems and issues with community relations. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration estimates that 85 percent of conveyor maintenance is a result of fugitive material at conveyor transfer points.Technologies to improve transfer pointsA number of techniques to improve the performance of conveyor transfer points have been developed. "The supply chain for coal-fired power stations involve a multi-stage network of mining units, preparation plants, blending facilities and transportation systems. Attempts to optimize the supply chain have historically been difficult due to the lack of communication/coordination between the various groups involved in coal production, transportation and utilization. In light of this issue, a new approach for globally optimizing the coal supply chain called Micro-Price Optimization has been developed to simplify the optimization problem and to provide coal producers with fundamental insight needed to improve the profitability of their operations. This fundamental concept assigns unit values to each particles (or groups of particles) passing through production units. Optimization occurs whenever the maximum tonnage of positive value particles are recovered and passed to market, while the minimum tonnage of negative value particles are recovered. Elements considered by the concept include factors such as target boiler cost/efficiency, waste disposal costs, coal quality parameters, emission penalties, transportation charges, or other quantifiable impact factors. This article reviews the basis for the micro-price concept and provides a detailed industrial case study involving the determination of optimum coal qualities that need to be supplied by mine operators to feed a coal-fired power station. INTRODUCTION The performance of coal preparation plants have long been known to play an important role in determining the overall profitability of mining operations. This significance is due to the fact that the misplacement of just 1 ton/hr of clean coal to reject resulting from poor plant performance can represent nearly $300,000 per year in lost revenues for a mine producing a steam market coal (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $50/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $300,000/yr). This loss can be even more pronounced, occasionally approaching $1 million per year for each 1 ton/hr of misplaced clean coal, for operations producing high-quality coking coal products sold into the premium metallurgical market (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $150/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $900,000/yr). Detailed economic studies indicate that improvements in plant yield resulting from increases in organic efficiency have one of the largest overall impacts on mine revenue when compared to other cost centers within the mining operation. One of the first studies to show this important financial impact was reported by Norton-Hambleton Consultants (Norton, 1979). Their study indicated that an unfavorable change in plant efficiency was second only to coal transportation in terms of its impact on profitability, while an unfavorable change in the cost of underground mining was a distance third. This longstanding realization has continued to provide a strong financial incentive for coal producers to optimize the separation efficiency of their coal processing and blending operations."

Highwall mining, which is a relatively new mining method, is a preferred and often the only feasible method for extracting coal reserve left by surface mining operations in areas with steep terrain and in closely spaced thin coal seams. Though its safety record is comparable to that of surface mining, failures of mine structures in highwall mines, especially the highwall, have occurred. Methods for the systematic designing of highwall mines to meet the safety and operational challenges are still evolving. This paper presents the results of research into improving the existing design methods and developing new ones for highwall mining operations. The design methodology is aimed at ensuring structural stability of the highwall, roof, web and barrier pillars and preventing subsidence. It takes into consideration the major ground control challenges of soft and layered mine roofs, and interactions from mining closely spaced coal seams. An optimization design process applying a pressure arch concept can be incorporated to improve the recovery rate of coal reserve. A computer program based on the design methodology was developed.

Cu-As feedstocks are among the most problematic copper sources that have been avoided over the past years. The high arsenic content of such ores/concentrates combined with their refractory nature have directed the metallurgical industry towards developing efficient technologies for the treatment of high-arsenic copper ores/concentrates. As the most important member of Cu-As-S mineral system, enargite (Cu3AsS4) is frequently encountered in some of the important copper deposits. Several hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes have been examined for the treatment of enargite concentrates, but currently, no commercial operation exists. In an effort to develop an original processing option, an acid bake-leach process has been identified and applied to an enargite concentrate containing ~67% enargite, ~27% pyrite (FeS2), ~3% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~6% sphalerite (ZnS) and <1% galena (PbS). Sulfuric acid baking of this concentrate resulted in the transformation of the concentrate to S8, As2O3, HFe(SO4)2?4H2O, PbSO4 and Cu0.47Fe0.53SO4?H2O, all of which (except elemental sulfur and PbSO4) dissolved during the water leaching step. More than 87% Cu and 64% As were leached when the concentrate was baked at 200°C over 7 h with a sulfuric acid to concentrate weight ratio of 1.6. Less than 1% As was lost to the gas phase. Upon water leaching, copper and arsenic were released to the solution at a concentration ratio of about 3:1. While enargite is very reactive during the sulfuric acid baking reaction, other minerals present in the concentrate such as pyrite, galena, and sphalerite may compete to consume sulfuric acid and be converted into their corresponding sulfates at different levels. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate phase transformations during the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of an enargite concentrate, and to study the effect of sulfuric acid dosage on the extraction of Cu, Fe, and As. In this regard, the concentrate, baked concentrate, and the leach residues are characterized and a conceptual process flowsheet is described for the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of enargite concentrates.

"One of the most significant technical and practical challenges facing the tunnel construction team on the Legacy Way road tunnel project in Brisbane, Australia was how to erect the pre-stressed precast concrete slabs to form the smoke duct in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels. An essential part of the tunnel ventilation system, the smoke duct, extends the full length of the 4.6km long twin, two lane tunnels. The vast majority of the tunnels (approx. 4.3km) were constructed using two 12.4m diameter double shield TBMs. The refurbished Herrenknecht machines broke several world records on the way to completing the tunnel excavation works in just over nine months. With the excavation complete the focus turned to solving the complex civil tunnel fit out challenges. A key component of the civil fit out of the tunnels was constructing the smoke duct in the TBM tunnels which was designed as a precast solution. The slabs which each measure 8.62m long by 2.0m wide by 200mm thick and weigh close to 9 tonne need to be erected above cast in situ corbels whilst other tunnel finishing works continue. The space proofing clearance offered by the design to the support corbels below and the precast segmental lining above was in the order of only 100mm. This paper details the events of how the Transcity JV tunnel fit out team, comprising some of Europe and Australia’s leading tunnel construction specialists, drew upon the global strengths of the existing JV member companies and the global reach of leading TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht to develop an innovative system to solve this challenging problem. This globetrotting story, which starts in Australia, visits Europe and mainland China before returning to Brisbane where it all began."

Assembling consistent data for a 40-year time series is a challenge because of the many changes that have occurred in this period. In many cases, because of process improvements and consumer requirements, grades of materials change in a 40-year span. This can lead to a wide fluctuation in price data simply because of increased costs for premium grades. Sources for obtaining price data can also change during a 40-year period. Changing the data source also introduces anomalies in a time series. In some cases, published price data are not representative of the real value of the material and provide little basis for further analysis. For some industrial mineral commodities, there are only a few producers, and value and production data are considered proprietary. In the data presented in this chapter, every attempt was made to ensure that the data were as consistent and representative of the industry as possible. However, the factors mentioned above may have introduced inconsistencies in some of the data series. Many different factors influence trends for industrial minerals because of the diversity of end uses for these commodities. Trends in production and prices for most of the industrial minerals can be related to one or more of the following: changing demand or technologies in end-use industries, development of new end uses, the effect of environmental regulations, production and processing technology changes, energy costs, foreign competition and substitution by other materials, and production as a byproduct of other minerals. World economic conditions, such as recessions and inflation rates, also play a part in some production and price trends. Data for 40 years of production for industrial minerals in the United States are presented in [Table 1] in 10-year increments. Unit values for the industrial minerals, in actual and constant 1990 dollars, are shown in [Tables 2 and 3].

Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

There is no doubt, if any existed, that the commercial minerals world has now moved into a new era of unprecedented challenges in the sourcing, mining, processing, trade and use of industrial minerals. Industrial (nonmetallic) minerals remain the often unsung workhorse of mineral commodities and specialist raw materials that frankly keep the world’s manufacturing industries ticking over, and everyday products we use in sound availability. They are also very much present among the so-called “critical minerals” necessary to advance cutting-edge developments in growing high-tech markets such as in energy transition: for example, lithium, rare earths, graphite and fluorspar. Indeed, in the United States during 2024, industrial minerals again accounted for the majority share of total sourcing, and, yes, geopolitics. The last few years have witnessed a series of geopolitical issues that have impacted and continue to impact international trade in industrial minerals. Above all, it has been the threat and implementation of recent trade tariffs between countries that have been most damaging in creating a potential trade war. mine production by value at $72.1 billion, or 54 percent, followed by metals, 25 percent, and coal, 21 percent, according to the latest data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). "Mitigation may be considered a hurdle when it comes to environmental permitting. For complex projects with site specific mitigation plans, the time to devise those plans and get them approved can be a long and costly endeavor. However, mitigation options are expanding and the mitigation banking industry has grown tremendously over the last two decades, helping projects move forward with less debate. Mining companies are recognizing the value that mitigation banks provide in helping to shore up project timelines and costs. Where possible, companies are taking advantage of the opportunities to buy credits from thirdparty providers offering mitigation bank credits. In some instances, mining companies are taking matters into their own hands by establishing mitigation banks to realize their own mitigation freedom. That can have its advantages and disadvantages, as discussed below. All in all, the expansion of mitigation options has streamlined the permitting process, introduced flexibility, improved project permitting timelines and loosened the permitting girdle.Compensatory mitigationCompensatory mitigation involves actions taken to offset unavoidable adverse impacts to wetlands, streams and other aquatic resources and authorized by Clean Water Act section 404 permits and other permits. As such, compensatory mitigation is a critical tool in helping the federal government meet the longstanding national goal of ‘‘no net loss’’ of Waters of the U.S., both in acreage and function.Section 314 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004 required the Secretary of the Army, acting through the Chief of Engineers, to issue regulations “establishing performance standards and criteria for the use, consistent with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, of on-site, offsite, and in-lieu fee mitigation and mitigation banking.” The provision also required that those regulations ‘‘maximize available credits and opportunities for mitigation, provide flexibility for regional variations in wetland conditions, functions and values, and apply equivalent standards and criteria to each type of compensatory mitigation’’ (73 FR 19595). The result was the Final Rule on Compensatory Mitigation for Losses of Aquatic Resources issued in 2008 (33 CFR Parts 325 and 332).”"

Over the past several years, computerized financial models have been an important part of Newmont&apos;s strategic planning process. Two applications will be discussed in this paper: a general purpose financial model of Newmont, and a detailed operational/financial model of Magma Copper Company. Newmont?s general purpose financial model was developed using Lotus 1-2-3. It was designed to aid management in assessing the financial consequences of investment and financing decisions associated with long-term strategic planning by simulating the consolidated effect from individual transactions. Not only is the model capable of assessing the sensitivity of specific decisions to changes in the external economic environment (i. e., commodity prices, interest rates, inflation and exchange rates), it can also evaluate the effect from operating and financial decisions, including changing production levels and cost structures at individual operating units as well as simulating several types of transactions, including equity and debt issues, acquisitions and divestitures. The analysis of Magma Copper Company required the development of a detailed operating and financial model of the Company. The model was developed using IFPS in the corporation?s UNISYS (then Burroughs) B7900 mainframe computer and included separate pro forma financial statements for each of San Manuel-Pinto Valley&apos;s mines and concentrators, as well as Magma&apos;s smelting and refining operations. The outcome of this analysis was the decision to merge Magma Copper and Pinto Valley Copper Corporation, and to recapitalize the new corporation in order to provide funds for a retrofit and expansion of its Arizona smelter and expansions of its refinery and SXEW facilities.

A booster fan is an underground fan installed in series with a main surface fan and used to boost the air pressure of the ventilation air passing through it. To accomplish this objective, the fan is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system, and interlocking devices between main and booster fan controls. The stopping and doors are used to prevent flow recirculation, and the monitors to ensure safe operation of the fan. A booster fan, properly sized and sited, can be used to create safe work conditions and allow the extraction of minerals from areas that would otherwise be uneconomic to mine. In deep and large mines with heavy emissions of air contaminants, the required quantities of air can only be supplied by using high pressure fans. These fans will inevitably induce significant losses of fresh airflow through the stoppings and doors. For well defined ventilation circuits, booster fans can be used to decrease the main fan pressures and reduce the leakage flows. However, this will require a good understanding of the correct ventilation practice, from planning to operation and maintenance of booster fans. The objective of this study is to investigate the conditions under which booster fans can be used safely and efficiently in underground coal mines. Specifically, the study is directed at (1) collecting reliable information on airway resistances and flow requirements from two large U.S coal mines, (2) collecting fan performance data from one or more existing coal mine where booster fans are used regularly, (3) monitoring the performance of booster fans in a laboratory model and an experimental mine, (4) developing a booster fan selection method to assist the ventilation engineer at the planning stage, and (5) training six M.S. or Ph.D. graduate students in advanced mine ventilation.

The steepness of an openpit mine’s slopes has a substantial influence on the mine’s financial return. This paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice, pitwall profiles are often planar in cross section within each rock layer: that is, the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. Here, instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is used to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth-varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties and factor of safety (FoS).

As a member of the uranium and coal producing community, I am pleased to participate in a session dedicated to a look at these and other mineral markets.(title slide) before sharing some of my thoughts with you, let me tell you a little bit about rocky mountain energy company. It was established as a subsidiary of union pacific corporation in 1971 with responsibility for coal, uranium, and industrial minerals. We participate in four coal mining operations and a uranium mine and mill all in Wyoming, and an aggregate and an abrasive operation in Utah.

Mechanization has been at the core of productivity improvements since the industrial revolution. During the past 20 years, mining has derived spectacular progress from mechanization. In the future, however, mechanization alone will not be enough. In the next few decades, automation will bring about new generations of highly productive and safe machines, with low operating costs. Increased use of new and better technology is generally accepted as the prime factor capable of closing the productivity gap. The productivity gap is the difference between inflation and metal prices. The three S-curves in Fig. I represent the evolution of technology in general, and mining in particular. TI represents incremental changes. the dominant sort of technology changes in the mining industry: - Better drills, electric hydraulic drills vs. pneumatic drills, the drilling rate is twice as fast. - Better steel and bits, to accommodate the higher performance drills. - Improved chemical explosives. - Bigger trucks in open pits.
