Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies in an electric field. Separation is effected by adjusting the electric and coacting forces, such as gravity or centrifugal force, and the time forces act on the particles, such that different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Separations made in air are called electrostatic separation even though there is always some flow of current. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high tension separations. Separations made in liquids are termed separation by dielectrophesis if motion is due to polariza¬tion effects in nonuniform electric fields and termed electrophoresis if motion is due to free charge on species in an electric field. There are no industrial applications of mineral concentration by electropho¬resis or dielectrophesis; thus this section is limited to concentration in air. Typical Industrial Separations Typical applications of electrostatic separation are: 1) Beneficiation of ores, such as the concentration of the minerals ilmenite, rutile, zircon, apatite, asbestos, hematite, and many others. 2) Purification of foods, such as the removal of trash and rodent excrement from cereal seeds. 3) Sorting of reusable wastes, such as separating insulation from copper wire shreds. 4) Electrostatic sizing, namely, the sorting of solid particles ac¬cording to their size or shape. Table I is a partial list of industrial separations made by electrostat¬ics. The various types of electrostatic separators and the feasibility of commercial separations are most easily understood by reviewing pertinent basic electrostatic theory and the selected electrical proper¬ties of solids prior to describing the equipment and application. This is the sequence of presentation used in this section. Electrostatic Units One of the greatest sources of confusion and error is due to the multitude of units used in electrostatic literature. The system of units used throughout this section is the rationalized MKS, often called Systéme International (SI) units. In this system the mechanical units are the meter, kilogram, and the serond. The unit of force is the newton (N). This system is completed by the addition of the unit of charge, the coulomb (C). The fourth dimension, viz., the coulomb. could also be considered to be the ampere, since one ampere is the flow in a conductor of one coulomb per second. "THAT WHICH WE CANNOT SEE" INTRODUCTION Often it has been stated that the greatest of all fears is fear itself - fear created only by that which we cannot see or by that which we fail to understand. The elimination or minimization of fear can best be accomplished by a thorough understanding of the underlying causes of the fear. As related to the mining industry the omnipresent fear is the dread of acquiring cancer through accumulated exposure to "that which we cannot see" - radioactivity. The understanding of the resulting exposure effects can best be obtained through acquisition of authentic data and the subsequent analysis of the same by a group of highly qualified specialists. I may point out that the nuclear industry and its source, uranium mining, greatly surpass any other industries in the degree of public awareness as to its potential environmental effects. Public out-cry has always influenced major decisions relating to how industries conduct their operations and much of their effort has resulted in many changes. The issues of health and safety in the mining industry have created considerable public concern, but intense concern to those of us directly involved within the industry. Increasing concern regarding the effect of human activity on the quality of the outer environment of air, land, and water has developed within the past two decades. There is now a growing concern about the health and safety of persons at work in their inner environment, of their working-places in industry. Hearings and investigations conducted in Canada by three appointed "Royal Commissions" have all confirmed that this concern is well justified when focused on the health and safety of workers in our mines. REGULATORY CONTROL OF URANIUM MINING OPERATIONS In Canada, the ownership of mineral resources and the control of their extraction, except for uranium, is vested under the "British North America Act" in the provinces. In all provinces the statutory basis for health and safety provisions in the mining industry can be found in the provincial "Mining Acts" with each province assuming the responsibility to produce its own "Mining Act". In particular, all of the Mining Acts in Canada place upon the management of a mine the responsibility to ensure that provincial provisions are met. "Slurry Microtunneling is a well-established technology building on over 20 years of experience in successful tunnel installations under all kinds of soil conditions across the U.S. and Canada. Recent microtunnel installations prove that initial hesitation, e.g. curved drives, is fading and long-distance pipe jacking projects as well as lake outfalls are being considered. One of the younger technologies is Direct Pipe®, which combines the benefits of HDD and Slurry Microtunneling. It fits exactly into the area where HDD is not feasible or too risky to apply. The paper points out the benefits of the Direct Pipe® technology for owners, engineers and contractors and discusses the latest developments of Slurry Microtunneling for long-distance, curved drives and sea/lake outfalls with wet recovery of the equipment such as on the ‘Keswick Outfall Project’ in Ontario. The first Direct Pipe® installation in the US was executed in August 2010. Since then, another 22 crossings have been carried out amongst a total of more than 60 Direct Pipe® crossings worldwide. INTRODUCTION Pipelines installed underground are indispensable for supplying the growing world population with water, oil, gas and electricity, for removing wastewater and for providing functioning telephone and communications networks. During recent years the limits of trenchless applications have been permanently shifted, leading to higher and more stringent project requirements and consequently new technologies, either as further development of existing methods, or through the development of new methods by incorporating elements of proven technologies. MICROTUNNELING TRENDS IN NORTH AMERICA Slurry Microtunneling has a wider geological application range in comparison to EPB and hard rock Microtunneling. The Slurry MTBM can be equipped with specific cutting wheels to cope with different soil conditions. The most flexible and most often employed type is the mixed soil cutting wheel, which contains a mixture of disc cutters as well as scrapers for varying soil conditions from cohesive soils (clay, silts) to highly permeable soils including sands, gravels and cobbles and even hard ground formations such as rock and boulders. A detailed geotechnical report provides the appropriate data to configure the MTBM and its features to the ground conditions expected. Mixshield or hydroshield (AVN/AVND) MTBMs in particular, can be safely operated with little overburden (~ 3-5 x machine diameter) and minimum risk of frac-out or settlement on the surface. This is especially beneficial in urban areas with sensitive buildings or for river crossings with protected fish habitats."

A compressed-water hydraulic pulse generator (HPG) for nonexplosive blasting of rock and con¬crete is described Energy is stored in the HPG by compressing water to ultrahigh pressure. A large, fastopening valve discharges the com¬pressed water, resulting in a high-energy impulse. The HPG can be used for small-scale bench blasting by discharging the water through a nozzle that is closely fitted into a borehole. A bench blasting system requires an HPG, a drill and an indexing mechanism to allow insertion of the HPG nozzle into a drilled borehole. Systems with discharge energies ranging from 40 to 250 kJ have been used to excavate hard rock, including andesite, granite and quartzite. The largest system can excavate 15 t/h (16.5 stph) of massive quartzite based on a 2-min cycle time for hole drilling. Blasting with an ultrahigh-pressure hydraulic pulse generator was demonstrated as an effective means of excavating hard massive rock under the confined conditions of a tunnel opening or underground sloping panel. Hydraulic blasting provides a continuous mechanized mining capability that is well suited for deep-level mining and urban excavation sites where explosives are prohibited

The paper presents the outline of the results in the algorithms and software of the microprocessor-based system for the powerful drugline bucket automatic motion, as well as the technological process control and functional diagnostics of the electrical equipment. The system is, aimed at the increasing both the draglines' working efficiency and the professional, competence of the operators. The excavator-dragline, equipped by the automatized operation, diagnostic and information processing system, possesses considerable technological: flexibility, which can widen therefore its field of application. The tasks of the dragline bucket motion optimal operation, programming of the excavation and overburden dumping processes, as well as the tasks of the control and the analysis of the technological parameters and the diagnostics of electrical equipment conditions, are defined in the paper. In our paper we present the results of these tasks being solved, providing the algorithms of the main mechanisms for the automatic operation for the swinging bucket controlled motion, the algorithms of the statistical analysis of the working efficiency parameters the algorithms of the diagnostics for electrical driving systems. The algorithms of the motion operation are constructed using the predicting dynamic models. The diagnostic algorithms at the normal working conditions form a number of algebraic invariants always equal to Ø with the accuracy up to when the electrical equipment is parametrically adequate. The algorithms of evaluating and analysis of the excavation efficiency make use of the direct measurement and analytical identification. The working condition and quality of the operation and control algorithms are investigated by simulation and natural testing. The results of the mathematical simulation of the bucket motion (with the 20 m3 capacity) of the excavator-dragline with the boom of 90 m in length are given in the paper.

The Bureau of Mines devised a column flotation technique using either fine or coarse bubbles and compared it with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a 44.7-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrate with 87-pct recovery, compared with 43.8- and 43.5-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrates with 85- and 77-pct recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse-and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5-pct-Cr203 with 95-pct recovery, exceeding conventional flotation which produced 35.6-pct-Cr203-grade concentrates with 87-pct recovery.

INTRODUCTION In urbanized area with heavy street traffic and with environmental requirements to lessen construction noise and vibration, the cut-and-cover is not always a feasible method to build a small diameter tunnel for sewage, water or other utilities. That is where the use of the shield machine to bore such a small diameter tunnel should be considered as a more acceptable alternative. Although the shield machine of this type should be small enough to meet specific requirements for a given tunnel, it should be big enough to provide some working space inside of the tunnel. Recently, we have successfully developed the fully mechanized small diameter tunneling method which enables us to bore a tunnel as small as 600mm in finished diameter. This paper discusses the concept of this newly developed method, including a case history where sewage tunnels of 800mm finished diameter were constructed by using this method. OUTLINE OF METHOD Developed from the original slurry shield pipe-jacking tunneling method, this method is highly automated so that all operations inside of the tunnel can be remotely controlled. The 1987-88 Denver Brown Cloud Study was performed to determine the sources of the particle cloud which forms over Denver each winter. The study was organized under the leadership of Colorado Governor Roy Romer , EPA Region VIII and the Greater Denver Chamber of Commerce. The study was sponsored by over 40 organizations representing governmental agencies, the natural gas industry, the coal industry, utilities, oil companies, railroads, the motor vehicle industry, and other Denver area companies and organizations. The cost of the study was $1.5 million which was raised almost entirely from private sources. The study team was headed by Dr. John Watson of the Desert Research Institute of the University of Nevada. Dr. Watson is a recognized expert in conducting studies of this type.

The revolution in development of new technology and practices in the gold mining and metallurgy industry continues unabated despite the ups and downs in the gold price. Some of the new cutting edge technologies are listed in Table 1 overleaf. There is room to discuss just a few of these here, but many more are identified and described in RANDOL (1992). Cutting edge advancements in gold recuperation, can be sorted into three categories. The first category includes fundamental advances that offer major improvement with significant economic benefits. Second would include evolutionary developments that offer smaller, but nonetheless commercially valuable improvements. Finally there are those "advances" that are interesting but of trivial or question­able economic benefit to industry. It is essential to adopt a "systems approach" philosophy towards developing and applying new technology. Practical innovation often comes about as a result of having to solve a problem. Innovation for innovation sake is an ego trip. Environmental management has become an important part of the system and the environmental implications of new processes and practices in the mine and mill have to be carefully considered for potential benefits and/or liabilities.

Blasting in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground is an increasing common challenge for surface and underground mines. Many current PETN based non-electric and electronic detonators have manufacturer published in-hole temperature limits ranging from 55°C to 65°C (131°F to 150°F). When confronting blasthole temperatures above the manufacturer published limits, operations may request site-specific guidance and qualification for use. The advised safe loading window for in-hole PETN based detonators is often too short to be practicable for production blasting. To overcome limitations of PETN based initiation systems, surface mines with high temperature ground and/or reactive ground are known to load blastholes with a qualified high temperature bulk emulsion that are top primed with a cartridge of temperature qualified detonator sensitive emulsion plus an RDX detonating cord downline. As there is no in-hole delay detonator in this system, blasthole timing is accomplished with surface delays. Although this system is safe, top priming and surface delaying does influence floor quality and top size fragmentation, and safe loading windows times reduce blast block size and increase blasting frequency. A mining company with a site characterized by geothermally high temperature ground plus highly reactive ground employed a blasting system like the one described above. The site desires to improve blasting performance by moving to an in-hole delay initiation system that can withstand the site ground conditions. At the request of the mining house, DynaEnergetics developed an electronic initiation system for application in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground conditions. The DynaEnergetics IGNEO high temperature electronic initiation system is rated for in-hole use in ground up to 150°C (302°F) for 48 hours. The detonator consists of a high strength detonator with an HMX base charge and thermally resistant downline. To make up a primer, the detonator is inserted into a booster charge assembly that is fitted with a small HMX shape charge. This high energy primer is designed to be compatible and reliable for firing bulk emulsions, including those with high percentages of urea inhibition to combat reactive ground. Up to 1000 detonators may be programmed in 1 ms increments up to 1500 ms. The system is controlled by a digital firing panel that can be used with either a wired or wireless trigger. The system enables high temperature and/or reactive ground sites to utilize in-hole delay initiation and realize the associated performance benefits.

Boddington Gold Mine commenced operation in 1987 with an initial production of 3.0 Mt/y at a grade of 3.5 git. Head grade has reduced over the life of the mine and the major response to the drop in grade has been to increase mining rates and increase plant throughput. A capital expansion was carried out in 1996 increasing the throughput to 6.0 Mt/y and since that date tonnage has been increased without major capital expenditure. BGM's current mill throughput is 8.77 Mt/y ( 1999). In 1999 the combined basement plant and direct leach plant processed 8,770,055 tonnes to produce 233,507 ozs or 7.262882 tonnes of gold at an average head grade of 0.83 git. With grades of 0.83 git, and gold price at record lows, $US251.95loz in August 1999 or $A393.67loz it has been necessary to make and maintain major cost savings to remain profitable. Boddington Gold Mine has achieved this by a number of steps including a productivity study by outside consultants.

Low world gold prices stimulate development and introduction of economically efficient ( cost saving) technology for operating gold mills. This report covers the results of testing and introduction of CIL technology to recover gold from flotation concentrate of Samarta gold concentration plant located in Buryatia (Russia). This plant is treated the ore of Zun Kholba gold deposit using gravity and flotation of gravity tails as preconcentration processes. Till recently high grade gold gravity concentrate was smelted to gold bullion and shipped to gold refinery, gravity middlings were leached by cyanidation in cone type equipment developed by Irgiredmet and flotation concentrate shipped to copper smelter. The disadvantages of flotation concentrate shipping to copper smelter are following: high concentrate transport cost; problem with gold shipped balance; high cost of flotation concentrate treatment; comparatively low gold recovery. In this connection IRGIREDMET developed the hydrometalurgical technology for gold recovery from flotation concentrate. The flowsheet was developed on the base of laboratory, pilot plant and industrial scale tests conducted by IRGIREDMET in 1987-1997 and lrgiredmet experience on CIP process testing and industrial scale introduction in Yakutia [1-6]. Rising costs have affected the cost of operating and install­ing crushing circuits, just as they have affected every other area and there is little possibility that the cost cycle is about to be reversed - power costs, wear materials costs and labour costs continue to increase but a basically stable gold price makes little allowance for these cost increases. Additionally, lower grades of ores being worked, and harder feed materials have a significant effect on the potential for higher processing costs. There are, of course, options for size reduction - some of them newer than others - some are suitable for certain types of ores and less suitable for others and it can sometimes be difficult to ascertain the accuracy of anticipated results before plant design and con­struction are completed - by which time the capital outlayed will preclude a change to another method ofreduction. Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12 V, 24 V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

Efficient particle classification is essential to enhance gravity and magnetic separation stages in one iron ore beneficiation plant. This study investigates the use of high-frequency screens to process finely ground iron ore, focusing on two size cuts: 400 μm and 100 μm. Pilot-scale trials were performed on four ore blends using a full-scale screening unit. A total of 48 tests were conducted, evaluating the effects of panel aperture, solids concentration, wash water, and feed particle size distribution. Results showed that wash water improved efficiency by up to 5%, while a solids concentration near 40% w/w delivered high separation performance with minimal ultra-fines in oversize streams. Apertures slightly larger than the target cut sizes yielded better precision in particle separation. Feed particle size distribution had limited impact on efficiency. The investigation successfully identified optimal screening conditions, including aperture selection, to achieve the most effective separation performance for downstream concentration processes.

Current conditions in the gold market demand that mine and plant operators make budgeted production targets at the lowest possible unit costs. For those companies bringing new gold pro­duction capacity on-line, achieving budgeted production levels as quickly as possible after start-up is vitally important to mini­mize unit costs and to begin a positive cash flow. Whether the objective is to simply improve unit costs or successfully start-up a new, complex plant, success will be strongly influenced by the skill levels of the operators and supervisors. The only way to assure return on plant investment, and to survive during depressed metal prices, is to ensure that plant operators have the knowledge to effectively run the plant. Technology available in computer-based, multimedia training systems, including: inter­active animation, videos, voice-overs, schematics, and text can now be used to train operators at their own pace using plant-spe­cific information. Additionally, it has been shown that learning through multimedia provides a higher degree of long term reten­tion than more traditional learning methods.

"Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) and Analysis of Retreat Mine Pillar Stability (ARMPS) treat the pillar as a passive structure that is designed to carry overburden dead-weight. This dead-weight is calculated by simple rules based on the geometry of the mining, such as “tributary area theory,” “pressure arch theory,” and “abutment angle theory.” Although the pressure arch loading approach indirectly accounts for the generally stiffer overburden response of narrow and deep panels, it does not include the effect of specific geology of the overburden in load calculations. The relationship between successful pillar layouts and overburden geology can be incorporated into the load calculation by using the Ground Response Curve (GRC) approach.This paper introduces the GRC modeling methodology to investigate the effect of overburden geology and excavation geometry on load transfer mechanisms using seven field measurement case studies from four U.S. mines. It was also shown that the modeling methodology used to derive GRC in this study approximates mining-induced stresses and deformations within 5% of the values measured in the field.INTRODUCTIONFrith and Reed (2017) stated that current state-of-the-art pillar design methods ignore the overburden mechanics and use estimated dead-weight of overburden to compute pillar sizes. In the United States and around the world, overburden loading is typically estimated by simple geometric rules, generally with the tributary area theory (TAT). The specific overburden mechanics, structural competence of the overburden strata, geology, in situ stresses, and overburden/pillar interactions are typically ignored. However, these important mechanical responses affect the stability of the mine pillars and openings; therefore, they also affect the safety of the mine workers.Research conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) after the Crandall Canyon mine disaster (Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010) showed that small panel width-to-depth ratios and stiff-strong overburden result in a reduction of the observed pillar loads, much smaller than the TAT estimate. In fact, as a response to the Crandall Canyon disaster, Mark (2010) implemented a pressure arch loading approach into the latest ARMPS program to recognize the inherently greater stability of narrow panels at depth. The pressure arch approach is a first logical step to introducing non-tributary area loading into the practical ARMPS program. Although the pressure arch loading indirectly accounts for the generally stiffer overburden response of narrow and deep panels, it does not include the effect of specific geology and mechanical response of overburden in the load calculations."

Discussion by D.G. Krige I read the paper "The jackknife approach" with interest. There appears to be a widespread misunderstanding of the kriging variance as a measure of the error variance of the kriged grade estimate of an ore block. Virtually all mineral deposits display skew frequency distributions and are subject to the well-known proportional effect. Thus, it is usual to find in an ore body, when subdivided a really into subpopulations, that the variances of the grades (or the total sills of the variograms) for the subpopulations will be correlated with the corresponding mean grades (usually linearly with the squares of the mean grades). Thus, the variogram will be station. When this feature is evident, the relative variograms for the subpopulations (i.e., with variogram values divided by the relevant mean squared) will be similar, or they could even be accepted at an averaged model for the whole ore body with stationarity. Using this approach, the kriging variance will reflect the relative error variance that is to be multiplied by the kriged block grade estimate squared to yield the usual kriging variance for purposes of confidential limits. The objection that the kriging variance does not take into account the local grades used for a block valuation then falls away. In the example given by the authors, the global mean grade is not recorded. But the global variance, taken at the value of the total sill, is 0.005, whereas the variance of the 11 values used in the example is 0.000152. The two variances differ by a factor of nearly six. If the relative variogram approach is applicable in this case, the need for a jackknife technique will fall away. Also note that, for skew distributions, the confidence limits for ore-block estimates will be skew as well, and symmetrical normal limits will not apply. RepIy by G.S. Adisoma and M.G. Hester There are a few interesting ways to utilize the block-by-block kriging variance that the authors have encountered. One of them is to classify a particular block into a proven-probable reserve or a possible-resource category, using a somewhat subjectively determined kriging variance value. Here, the kriging variance still represents the drilling density, i.e., data configuration more than the data values. Professor Krige mentions another ingenious approach through the use of relative variograms. This will yield a block kriging variance that takes into account local (block) grade, as he correctly points out, for purposes of confidence limits. However, we are more interested in quantifying the uncertainties associated with grade estimation in a much larger scale than a block. e.g., for a mining phase or the minable reserve. The jackknife, through the block kriging shortcut, provides a simple solution to obtain a single estimation variance for a general shape. The authors' main reference discusses different ways to handle skewed distributions typical in mineral resource estimation, e.g., the weighted jackknife approach or data transformation. Also, as with any technique, we can always improve our estimate by subdividing into smaller populations that are geologically and statistically separate domains. As we have mentioned; the jackknife is but a tool in our collection of tools to solve estimation problems. The jackknife's appeals are its simplicity and versatility. It is handy when no other solution is available, or when the available solution is not practical. It is used with other methods, not to replace them altogether. ?

3.1 INTRODUCTION The final subsidence basin discussed so far is that developed long after mining has stopped. In a supercritical final subsidence basin, the central portion subsides uniformly. Thus any structures located there are not subjected to any final permanent surface deformation. But this statement is only true for the final subsidence basin. When the face is moving, the structures are subjected to dynamic deformations associated with the dynamic subsidence basin. For instance the house in front of a moving face (location 1 in Fig. 3.1) is subjected to the maximum tensile strain and the maximum positive curvahue. When it falls behind the face in location 2, it is subjected to the maximum compressive strain and the maximum negative curvature. When the house is far behind the face in location 3, it returns to its original condition with only uniform subsidence. However, the magnitude of the dynamic deformations may be sufficiently large to damage a structure in locations 1 and 2 before it reaches location 3. Therefore it is very important to study the characteristics of the dynamic subsidence basin. Under normal conditions, when the face has advanced for a distance approximately one-sixth to one-third of the seam depth from the setup entry, depending on the seam depth and the physical properties of the overburden strata, the movement of the over- burden strata reaches the surface, whereupon the surface also be- gins to deform. Thereafter, the surface point where the movement initiates is always located at a fixed distance ahead of the face. The angle between the vertical line at the faceline and the line connecting the movement initiation point on the surface and the face- line is the angle of advance influence, w. The angle of advance influence can be used to determine the distance, [ 1], which is the influence zone ahead of the face. w is approximately 20O to 35 O for the northern Appalachian coalfield (Peng and Geng, 1984). The movement of each surface point is a relatively complicated process both in time and in space, because the relative position between the faceline and each surface point varies continuously, so that the direction and rate of movement for each surface point differ. In the following sections, the movements of each surface point on the major cross section are illustrated. 3.2 DYNAMIC SURFACE MOVEMENTS Dynamic surface movements include dynamic subsidence and displacement. The movement of each point on the subsidence basin is different as the face advances from 1 to 6 (Fig. 3.2). Surface points A and B, being far in front of the moving face, subside and displace toward the face (i.e., from A to A' and from B to B'). Point C, which is quite near but in front of the moving face, subsides continuously but displaces initially toward the face and then turns to pure subsidence ending up at C'. Point D, which is behind the face above the gob, subsides continuously, but displaces initially toward the face when it is in front of the face and reverses to follow the moving face when it is behind the face, with the amount of displacement toward the face being larger than that following the face. As a result the net displacement is toward the center of the gob (i.e., from point D to D'). The same statement is true for point E. For point F, the net displacement is zero, i.e it appears to have dropped down vertically to F'. For points G to I, the net displacements are in the direction of face advance except the magnitudes are increasing in sequential order. Point 1, has reached the final dynamic position of 1'. In other words, the face has passed sufficiently away such that it does not affect the movement at point I. All other points (A to H) are still within the face influenced area. 3.3 DEVELOPMENT OF DYNAMIC SUBSIDENCE PROFILES When the face has moved for a distance of h/6-h/3 from the setup entry, surface subsidence reaches the surface. At this time the surface subsidence basin is very mild (S, in Fig. 3.3), and it is symmetrical about the center. As the face continues to advance, the maximum subsidence continues to increase, and its location moves with, but falls farther behind the face. When the face has advanced a sufficient distance, e.g., (0.9-2.2)h, away from the setup entry, the maximum subsidence reaches the maximum possible value (curve S,). At this time, the dynamic subsidence profile is fully developed. Thereafter both sides of the dynamic subsidence profile become stabilized. The subsidence profile on the face side moves with the advancing face in an orderly manner (curves S, and S,). When the face stops, the face side of the profile continues to subside and becomes stabilized (curves;) sometime after. Curve S; is the final subsidence profile (see Fig. 2.22). 3.4 DEVELOPMENT OF DYNAMIC DISPLACEMENT AND SLOPE PROFILES The dynamic displacement profile moves with the advancing face (Fig. 3.4), but changes according to some specific rules. When the face has advanced to A, the surface begins to move and its dynamic displacement profile has two maximum values (curve Ua): one positive near the setup entry moving toward the face advancing direction and the other negative on the face side also moving toward the face advancing direction. As the face continues to advance, the positive maximum displacement on the setup entry side increases and moves toward the face continuously. The same statement is true for the negative maximum displacement on the face side. When the opening increases to the critical size, both the maximum positive and negative displacements reach the peak values and remain constant thereafter. Notice that when the opening becomes critical in size, the point of zero displacement no longer moves with the advancing face. Rather it spreads into an area of zero displacement (curve Ue) and expands as the face advances. When the face stops, the displacement on the face side continues until it becomes stabilized (curve Úe). Curve Úe is the final displacement profile. The ratio of maximum dynamic to final displacement ranges from 60 to 75%. The dynamic slope profile follows the same patterns of change. The ratio of maximum dynamic to maximum final slope ranges from 50 to 80%. The maximum slope decreases with in- creasing rate of face advance (Peng and Geng, 1984). It must be pointed out that except for those near both sides of the profiles, each point on the displacement and slope profiles is subjected to a cycle of positive and negative displacements and slopes depending on its relative position with respect to the face.

The use of gravity concentration as a means of recovering the 'free' gold component from alluvial and milled ore products is widely used and is receiving increasing attention, particularly with the introduction of the centrifugal-type concentrating units. Because of ever-increasing mining and processing costs and a decline in the gold price, it has become important that the recov­ery efficiency from concentrates is improved so as to increase the yield of bankable gold from this primary recovery step. This paper outlines an alternative hydrometallurgical approach aimed at achieving overall gold recoveries in excess of 98%, together with the elimination of any secondary residue streams which, in the case of conventional treatment methods, require re-processing. An adaptation to the Minataur™ Process technology is being applied with the proposed method, incorpo­rating the pre-treatment of the concentrate, oxidative leaching of the pre-treatment residue, followed by precipitation of a high­purity gold. This route is seen to have application in all scales of operation. Selected results from laboratory-scale testwork are presented to highlight the discussion.
