Coal mining today is confronted with numerous problems, all of which affect in some way the ability of the operator to produce profitably. The major endeavor, therefore, is a quest for cost lowering techniques. Complete belt haulage from shuttle car to river barge appeared to be a step in such a direction. A deep look into all aspects proved this to be more involved than just the installation of such a belt line. With this paper, we will attempt to present to you the problems and requirements of design and installation of an all-belt haulage system, believed to be the longest underground belt installation in the world at this time. The first and most important item is the justification of an all-belt haulage system. The following is a brief history of the coal property and the facts affecting our decision.

Brockway Glass Company, Inc., manufactures glass containers at fourteen plants located in nine states. The relatively high place value of the major glass batch components dictates that raw material supplies be obtained from numerous sources in the United States and Canada. One objective of our central composition control program is to arrive at a glass composition with similar physical properties at each of our plant locations. This requires that adjustments be made in the batch compositions to compensate for chemical variations from one raw material source to another. Minor chemical variations will occur in sand, limestone, and dolomite from one source to another. Major variations are present in the alumina sources because of the diverse rock types utilized.

ISO 14000 series are voluntary international standards that address environmental management system standards, environmental auditing, environmental labeling, environmental performance evaluation, and life-cycle assessment. An environmental management system (EMS) is a facet of an organization's structure that addresses the immediate and long-term impact of a company's products, services, and processes on the environment. Many companies in the United States are taking a cautious wait-and-see approach before embracing ISO 14000. A few mining companies are reviewing the standards and using them as guidelines. The paper outlines the status, possible benefits to the mining industry, and options available to a company wanting to become involved in the ISO 14000 standards.

Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970's, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the O.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6,560 Mm Id (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2,832 m Id (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm Id (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

The most widely used machines for grinding coal to the sizes prescribed for the pulverized coal firing of furnaces, boilers, and kilns are the vertical ball-race, roller-race and roller-bowl types of mills. However, the increased use of coal has led to an increased use of tumbling ball mills for coal grinding. Specifically, air-swept ball mills are now a part of many dry pulverized coal firing systems, offering the advantages over vertical mills of lower maintenance costs and the ability to handle strong or abrasive (high ash) coals. The current use of wet ball mills is to prepare coal-water slurries for direct combustion, although in time they may also find routine application for preparing slurry feed for coal gasifiers. In either application, wet ball mills ofer the advantages that coal grinding and wetting can be accomplished in a single step, and that the mills are readily used with fine wet screens to assure top size control in the slurry product. The simulation of tumbling ball mills with mathematical models has reached a fairly advanced stage, but the concepts have been applied only recently to coal grinding. As this paper will demonstrate, however, significant progress has been made in the use of models in ball mill circuit design for coal grinding. Included is a description of the techniques used for simulation, recommended parameter estimation methods, and demonstrations of process engineering calculations for large scale coal grinding circuits.

Guilbert, Dr. Leo J. Miller, Robert E. (Bob) Murray and Douglas (Doug) B. Silver will join 240 other mining industry luminaries when formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame on Sept. 29, 2018. Guilbert was a renowned geologist and professor of economic geology at the University of Arizona; he had a distinguished 50-plus year career in academia and business. Guilbert, together with J. David Lowell, worked on the most important breakthrough in mineral exploration in the last 100 years, the Porphyry Copper Model. This work, known as the Lowell and Guilbert Model, was utilized by exploration geologists worldwide over the next four decades to discover hundreds of millions of tons of copper metal and numerous profitable mines including the prosperous Bajo de la Alumbrera copper mine in Argentina. Guilbert was a founder of The World Museum of Mining in Butte, MT. He was the recipient of countless awards including the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) R.A.F. Penrose Medal as well as the D.C. Jackling Award from the SME.Dr. Leo J. Miller was a maverick in the mining industry and no armchair geologist. He believed that active fieldwork, on foot with a rock pick, was indispensable for exploration. His basic tenet was to absorb as much information about an exploration target up front, formulate ideas – sometimes novel ones — and then get out into the field to prove those ideas. Miller was known to diverge from the standard interpretation of the geological processes, which formed the mineral deposits, and to apply innovative applications of high-tech tools to more usual exploration programs. This approach resulted in a 50-plus year career that included the discovery of the Kidd Creek massive sulfide deposit and the development of the Lee Creek phosphate deposit; which other explorers had previously given up on, believing whatever phosphate might be present would be too difficult and expensive to mine. The recipient of many honors and awards, Miller received the SME Robert M. Dreyer award in recognition of outstanding achievement in ore discoveries."

Henderson Mine has been transporting molybdenum ore using a rail haulage system for the past 21 years. Due to the age of this system, limited performance, and obsolescence, a capital investment decision was imminent. Henderson used this opportunity to evaluate other transportation methods and continuously improve their mining practices. These efforts resulted in a new mine plan for Henderson, which ensures that Henderson will continue to supply high quality molybdenum into the 21st century. This paper will discuss the dramatic changes taking place at the Henderson Mine as a new production level is mined. These changes include the installation of an underground crushing, conveying, and truck haulage system, as well as increasing the scale of the panel caving process. Each of these topics will be discussed, as will their rock mechanics and material flow implications.

Gentlemen, the title of my paper is Surface Mining An Interim Land Use. Surface mining has become one of the major controversies of our time. This has happened in spite of the fact that all surface mining to date has involved only 6 million acres out of a total of 2300 million or approximately one-fourth of one percent of the total land area in the United States. I'm not going to dwell on whether peoples' perspectives are out of focus in light of the area involved, the energy crisis, national security, or the international balance of payments problem. While these things are all critically important, it is not the function of this paper to relate to them. Maybe the amount of attention attracted to surface mining is out of proportion to a lot of other things, but I don't feel that we should use that as a basis for procrastination. However, let me categorically state that anything that affects the surface of the earth is a form of land use --- be it an interstate highway, a power plant site, a golf course, a corn field, a strip mine, or the plot of ground on which your house is located.

The effect of pulping reagents on the flotation de-inking of laser printed wastepaper was investigated with regard to the removal efficiency of toner and mineral filler particles for different pH values. These results show that caustic pulping causes the toner to be released from the fibers at larger particles sizes. On the other hand, acid pulping not only causes the toner to be released at smaller particles sizes but also increases the concurrent flotation removal of mineral filler particles. It was experimentally observed that the froth generation and stability during flotation were improved for acidic pH values.

The report shows the sensitivity that nine different cash-flow factors have on the discounted rate of return calculated from feasibiliity- studies on potenital open-pit orebodies of silver, copper, and uranium. Cash-flow factors of "grade", "market value", and "recovery" are. the most sensitive. This verifies the need of reliable estimates for these factors. The cost of evaluation of "preproduction cost" is the least sensitive. This gives credence to the fact that more consideration should be given to compiling sufficient data, as the largest financial losses are not in the cost of evaluation but rather in the abandonment of an unprofitable mining operation after a commitment of capital is made on the basis of an incomplete evaluation. Sensitivity analysis of cash-flow factors enhances evaluation programs by disciplining the collection of data and allowing more realistic distribution of evaluation monies.

Two-dimensional, finite-difference elastic modeling aids in planning an optimum seismic-acquisition scheme to define the extent of subsurface cavities resulting from in situ gasification. To understand the seismic effects of a cavity, two models are compared and contrasted. Model A consists of a low-velocity layer (LVL) in a half space; Model B contains a rectangular water-filled cavity in the LVL. Amplitude differences are the dominant effect on the surface records for each model. Cavity resonance and diffraction effects are more definitive in vertical seismic profiles (VSP's) and in a "snapshot" of the wave field. Interpretation and subtraction of corresponding records for both models shows the need for pre- and post-gasification seismic recording. Also VSP data are more informative than surface records.

As the gold mining industry matured through the 1980' s, and into the 1990's, the development of refractory gold orebodies has become more prevalent. Newmont Mining Corporation developed and commercialized flash chlorination for the treatment of carbonaceous preg robbing ores; Homestake Mining Company developed and commercialized the industry's first application of autoclaves. Barrick installed the world's largest autoclaves on whole ore treatment a few years later. Dry grinding and roasting followed at Placer Dome's Cortez, Freeport -Independence and Newmont's Carlin operations. Today, numerous papers are presented on research efforts worldwide which address treatment of refractory gold ores by bioxidation, roasting, autoclaving, alternative lixiviant treat­ment and other novel process ideas. The overall objectives are to develop economic processes for difficult refractory ores where no process exists or conventional practice is cost prohibitive. Successful research can lead to lower operating costs, increased profits, and increased ore reserves. One such research effort directed by E I DuPont de Nemours and Company, Advanced Mining Technologies, was focused on gold ores which were refractory in nature due to the cyanide soluble copper content. Approximately five years of research effort culminated in a patented process (U.S. Patent 5,411,575)1 and the formation of a new joint venture company, AuGMENT Technologies, in 1995 with Newmont Mining Corporation. Today significant progress has been made in moving the laboratory scale tests to commercialization.

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production, but the thermal state of pellets in the drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of the drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results indicate there is a coupling effect in the drying section of a traveling grate. Gas with higher temperature in down-draught drying (DDD) transfers heat to the up-draught drying (UDD) through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changes before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD are displayed in UDD in advance. To verify the model, a contrast experiment was conducted.

Seismic repeaters are commonly observed in natural fault zones dominated by slow aseismic motion. The corresponding seismic signal, characterized by highly similar wave forms, is usually interpreted as the repeating ruptures of locked asperities on fault planes (“patches of higher roughness”), loaded by a-seismically slipping areas (“creeping areas”) (Chen & Lapusta 2009; Bourouis & Bernard 2007). Only very few occurrences of seismic repeaters have been reported in underground mines, where these phenomena are rather unexpected since the stress state and the seismic wave propagation continuously evolve with the advancing excavation front (Kinscher et al., 2020). A recent study based on a local seismic network installed in the underground mine of Garpenberg, Sweden, has shown that seismic repeaters and multiplets represent the main part of the total released seismic energy (magnitude of seismic events: -2 < M <1, on moment magnitude scale), with some seismic families being active during several months to years. It is suggested that repeaters are linked to aseismic slip on pre-existing talc-filled fractures, induced by the excavation, and loading of asperities. These results imply that part of redistribution of stresses in the mine is due to aseismic slip, which might explain the observed distant and delayed seismicity.

Although great strides have been made during the past two decades in the reduction of the severity of accidents and injuries in underground coal mining, the number of accidents resulting in disabling injuries and lost time has continued to increase. Looking ahead to the 1990s, the reduction of accidents and incidents typically found in these latter categories should be emphasized in safety training for underground coal mining. Loss control is an approach which shows promise for applications in mine safety training since loss-control strategies focus on the pre-contact stages of an incident rather than on the incident, itself. Applied to safety training, the heightened awareness of personnel to workplace hazards at the pre-contact stages should result in a reduction of accidents and injuries. This paper explains the concept of loss control and shows how it can be applied in the development of the needs assessment for miner training programs. An example, based on research conducted at the continuous-miner worksite, is provided.

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group&apos;s new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem&apos;s work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for a highly mechanized P.T.Freeport Indonesia&apos;s underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a copper-gold deposit being developed underneath the current Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) mine. One of company&apos;s current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady oreflow of 25,000 tpd by year 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

Mine tailings, the byproduct of mining and mineral processing, are increasingly mass-produced as a result of increased demand for metals and minerals as well as the advancement in technology that allows for the exploitation of lower-grade ores. Lower grades can increase the volume of tailings that may contain new gangue minerals that should be evaluated for the presence of critical minerals and other valuable metals. The practice of reprocessing, while relatively new, is crucial to reducing environmental damages, obtaining valuable critical minerals from waste, and contributing to more sustainable repurposing and disposal methods. With the increase in tailings dam failures in recent years, there is a large motivating factor in remining and removing the potential hazard to benefit the safety of potentially impacted communities. In analyzing the perspectives of various domestic and international studies, this literature review will determine the feasibility of reprocessing and reutilizing mine tailings waste for a more sustainable future while exploring current practices that have benefitted ecosystems and communities.

Biodegradation of spodumene by Asnergillus niger has been investigated. This organism oxidizes sucrose to citric and oxalic acids (in approximately 50-sot proportions) which degrade the spodumene mineral. The kinetic effects of leach variables on the dissolution of lithium were determined. The maximum theoretically attainable rate of lithium extraction was calculated for the effect of pulp density, to be V : 3.01 x 10 kg m sand the corresponding constant value, K = 12.47% pulp density. The apparent activation energy of lithium extraction vas found to be ^E = 20.3 kJ and frequency factor A = 5.66 x 10 s for S-spodumene leaching by synthetic -3 citric and oxalic acids (each in 0.05 kmol m-3 concentrations).

Nonbauxite ores such as aluminum silicate clays and coal fly ashes have been widely considered as potential resources of alumina (Al2O3). The interest focused on these ores is due to their high alumina content. Over the years, in countries where there are little or no bauxite reserves or where the recovery of existing bauxite ores to produce alumina with the Bayer process is not economical, alternative processes have been explored. Among these processes, acid leaching is seen as the most attractive process. In the acid leaching process, heat treatment for thermal activation to destruct the refractory structure of the minerals in the ores is generally recommended as a pretreatment method. Recently, the applicability of high energy ball mills, which are useful for mechanical activation as a pretreatment method before leaching, has attracted much attention. This is a short summary of our previous review [1], giving the details of alumina manufacturing from thermally and mechanically activated clays and coal fly ashes by acid leaching.
