"This article details the use of an alternative testing method to the 2004 "Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) Recommendations for Prestressed Rock and Soil Anchors" manual’s recommendations for temporary and permanent rock anchors for applications in shafts and tunnels. This method was developed and used for the Black River Tunnel (BRT) project in Lorain, OH as a means to reduce testing time of rock bolts during shaft construction while maintaining a similar level of quality control and assurance. The following sections will detail the project background, subsurface characteristics, shaft construction, the 2004 PTI testing method and associated difficulties, the alternative testing method and conclusions reached.Project backgroundThe city of Lorain is located in north central Ohio on the south shore of Lake Erie, approximately 40 km (25 miles) west of Cleveland and 119 km (74 miles) east of Toledo. The city chose to build a large-diameter storage tunnel and pump station to meet its requirements to reduce sanitary sewer overflows to the nearby Black River. NTH Consultants Ltd. (NTH) was retained by the city’s prime consultant, Malcolm Pirnie Inc. (now the water division of Arcadis), to perform a geotechnical investigation, develop design and construction bid documents for the tunnel and shaft liner systems and ultimately provide oversight assistance during the construction phase of the project.The BRT is an approximately 1,700-m (5,560-ft) long, 7-m (23-ft) diameter rock tunnel to be lined with a 5.8-m (19-ft) inside diameter secondary concrete lining (Fig. 1). The tunnel is designed to accept flow at a new drop shaft (Shaft 3) located on the west side of the Black River, across from the city of Lorain Black River waste water treatment plant (BRWWTP). The tunnel will be dewatered at the south end by a large diameter pump station (Shaft 1) located in the existing Lorain Port Authority Public Boat Launch. Flow from the new pump station will be discharged into an existing shallow interceptor sewer and directed back to the BRWWTP."

This study reports that routine mining activities could produce a high number of nanometer sized particles which have not been well characterized and may represent an unacknowledged exposure present in the mining environment. A preliminary survey of the particle emission from the feed-leg drilling activity was conducted in the excavations of an experimental mine. The level of particulate exposure was monitored by real time direct reading instruments include a NanoScan scanning mobility particle sizer (measurement range 10-420 nm) and an optical particle sizer (measurement range 0.3-10 μm). Particulate morphological and structural examination was conducted through transmission and scanning electron microscopy and x-ray dispersive analysis of samples collected by a thermophoretic sampler, and a novel nanoparticle sampler. The real time instrument data revealed high concentrations (> 3.5 x 106 particles/cm3) of ultrafine/nanoparticles generated from the drilling activity. Analysis of particle sampler specimens with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed a large amount of submicron silica, spherical primary particles and agglomerated soot particles rich in carbon. Exposure to particles in the nanometer size from various sources within the mining environment may be associated with the poorly understood rise in respiratory and systemic disease among miners. INTRODUCTION Exposures to mine dust have been measured and evaluated for decades. Exposures to aerosolized dust such as coal or silica particles can cause lung and other diseases (1-7). One way that The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) characterizes inhalation exposures within the mining environment is through measuring the respirable dust mass concentration within the breathing zone of workers (8). Respirable particulate matter (RPM) is of great concern due to its ability to deposit in the alveolar region of the lungs (9-10) where it can affect respiratory function. Interventions championed by MSHA have greatly reduced the prevalence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Although great progress has been made, the prevalence of CWP and PMF appears to be trending upwards and the measured increase in prevalence is not elucidated in RPM measurements (11-12). Though the presence and risk associated with ultrafine particles such as emission from diesel engine within the mining environment has been previously established (13-14). There is suspicion within the mining industry that this resurgence of lung disease may be due to very fine particulate matter from various source that is not properly characterized by current sampling methods. Nanometer sized particles, in the range of ultrafine particles, fall within the RPM size range and have been found to deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract (15). Nanoparticles are commonly accepted as particles that are greater than 1 nm in two or three dimensions but smaller than 100 nm (16). Once in the lungs, nanoparticles can enter the blood stream (17) and selectively affect other target organs such as the heart, liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and brain (15,18-19). The size of nanoparticles has been shown to correlate with their translocation behavior on secondary target organs (20-21). There is strong evidence that the clearance mechanisms used to rid the lungs of particulate matter are not as effective on nanometer sized particles, leading to a greater fraction of never-cleared particles which may enhance disease development (20). Research has demonstrated that nanometer sized particles have unique properties (22) whose adverse health impact is greater than what has been found with micrometer sized particles of the same type (23-26). The large ratio of surface area to mass compared to larger particles is believed to make nanoparticles a greater hazard. The introduction of continuous mining machines in the late 1940's prompted the mining industry to reassess shuttle car batch-type haulage. Between place changes, the continuous miner could cut and load coal on a nearly continuous basis, but after loading a shuttle car, the high-capacity machine had to wait until the second shuttle car came inby and spotted itself under the miner tail boom. Thus, the wait-for-shuttle-car delay periods became the new bottleneck for increased coal production from the mine section. Recent studies have shown that nearly 25 pct of the continuous miner cycle time is consumed by delays in the haulage system, usually waiting for shuttle cars. Computer simulations of a face operation indicate that up to a 45 pct increase in coal production may be realized through the use of a continuous haulage system, assuming of course that the outby haulage system can handle this increased capacity. Coincidently, there are recent claims by some mines using continuous face haulage of a production increase of 45 pct compared with shuttle car haulage. These documented production records, computer simulations, and common sense indicate the potential of continuous face haulage in underground coal. The late 1960's and early 1970's saw several mining machinery manufacturers market mobile bridge carrier and piggyback bridge conveyor continuous haulage systems for use in underground coal mines. These systems have shown limited potential in some mines and outstanding success in others. It appears that no one system can be universally applicable to all underground mining conditions; thus, the Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive research over the last few years to investigate different types of continuous haulage systems for use in high and low coal seams that will advance the state of the art.

"While many classic mineral processing circuit design approaches rely on deterministic methods, numerous studies have shown that the uncertainty inherent to the various input parameters can significantly influence design decisions. In a separation circuit, many of the technical uncertainties can be mathematically represented as statistical distributions for the unit recovery and feed grade. These uncertainties are then propagated by the circuit design and reflected in the circuit performance indicators, such as product grade and global recovery. An effective design strategy entails identifying which units are most influential in this uncertainty propagation and thus merit further consideration. Unfortunately, few analytical tools provide this information, particularly those that rely solely on deterministic methods. However, one promising approach is through the application of Taguchi’s method, in a fashion similar to statistical tolerancing of manufactured products. Since the technical challenges are fundamentally similar, Taguchi’s method shows promise in evaluating the level of compounded uncertainty by various circuit designs while determining the role of each separation stage on the overall selectivity and variability of separation circuits. This paper demonstrates Taguchi’s method in several two and three unit circuit designs. INTRODUCTION AND METHOD DESCRIPTION Uncertainty in Mineral Processing Circuit Design Analysis and estimation of uncertainty propagation in mineral processing separation circuits is an essential and significant aspect of an optimal circuit design procedure. Most of the current circuit design methodologies have been constructed, implemented, and validated using a deterministic modeling approach. However, numerous studies have shown that the inherent uncertainty induced by uncertain design parameters can be a significant factor in many mineral processing applications (e.g. Kraslawski 1989; Xiao and Vien 2003; Ghaffari et al. 2012). Thus, an effective circuit design methodology must be able to quantify uncertainty in separation circuits with limited input data. This paper describes Taguchi’s method, as an experimental design technique, to approximate uncertainty in mineral processing applications, and then the similarity of results between Taguchi’s method and Monte Carlo Simulation is investigated. Monte Carlo Simulation The term “Monte Carlo Simulation” has been used to refer to a variety of stochastic simulation methods spanning a broad array of business, technical, and scientific domains. Most generally, Monte Carlo Simulation refers to numerical analysis which is based on (pseudo) random sampling from a domain of input parameters with a known statistical distribution. This methodology allows one to determine the distribution of expected results from a standard deterministic process model. Execution of a Monte Carlo simulation begins by identifying the domain of input parameters, statistical distributions for each parameter, and a deterministic process model which describes the anticipated result as a function of the inputs. Next, one discrete random sample is taken for each input parameter, considering the input distributions. The process model is then solved for this mix of input parameters, producing a single simulation result. This procedure is then repeated a “large” number of times, utilizing new randomly sampled input parameters for each simulation iteration. Once the desired number of iterations is reached, the results of each independent simulation are aggregated to produce descriptive statistics such as minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, kurtosis, and other distribution parameters. Given enough iterations, the Monte Carlo method fully explores potential synergies between the input parameters. The City of Akron will construct the Northside Interceptor Tunnel (NSIT) project to control and reduce combined sewer overflows. One component of the project a large diameter tunnel diversion / flow control structure that will facilitate tunnel storage, divert dry weather flow to the treatment plant, and divert large wet weather events that are greater than the tunnel capacity to the Cuyahoga River. The structure is designed to pass up to 1.2 billion gallons per day of flow and includes floatables screening. This paper will discuss project background, factors that influenced shaft location, and options evaluated to manage the large design flows.

In tunnel condition assessment, the trend is towards comprehensive 3D measurement combined with high quality image texture to document and quantify damages to the tunnel surface and to create a cohesive data base of the structural conditions throughout its lifespan. The faster such measurements can be made on site, the less it impacts traffic conditions of the highly sophisticated subway systems. The Dibit high-speed 3D scanning system which is based on Photogrammetry and LiDAR technology enables data acquisition in tunnels at a speed of up to 60 mph. Given the high rate of speed the system can operate, tunnel shutdowns can be drastically reduced, and tunnel safety increased. The photorealistic texturing of the 3D-model allows the identification and analysis of smallest material damage (e.g., cracks ≥0.3 mm wide). The publication illustrates technical details and 3D results of the innovative system from measurements that were performed in the subway tunnels of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System in San Francisco, CA (total length 66.23 km).

In a major milestone for geoscience, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has unveiled the Cooperative National Geologic Map, the most detailed national-scale geologic map of the country to date. The project offers a fresh, layered look at the rocks and sediments that make up the United States. For geologists, engineers and mining professionals, it provides both a technical achievement and a practical tool that will help shape future exploration and landuse decisions across the country. The new map provides a regional view of geology both on and beneath the Earth’s surface. Using different colors to represent rock types and sediments, it allows users to toggle through multiple layers, revealing for the first time the surficial and quaternary deposits that lie above the bedrock. “This is the first national map to include multiple layers of mapped geology, the first built to be easily updated as new maps are published, and the first to be delivered in a user-friendly online interface,” said Joseph Colgan, a USGS research geologist who led the development team. The Cooperative National Geologic Map is a culmination of more than a century of collaborative mapping between the USGS and the nation’s state geological surveys. More than 100 existing maps produced by state geological surveys and the USGS over the past 40 to 50 years were combined and standardized to create the national data set. During its three-year creation, the USGS prepared digital data, built the system to bring the maps together, developed the web interface and underwent a review and approval process. Through this process, decades of fieldwork, analysis and digital cartography were brought together to provide both national and local expertise.

First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. 'he capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. Water is one of the most important ressources of our planet. Unlike many other natural resources, water cannot be substituted by anything and must therefore be handled with the utmost care. Depending on the region and the possible shortage of water, the importance of water increases even further. Water consumption is not the only factor. In the construction industry, water pollution from auxiliary and operating materials and processes as well as other contaminants and their resulting load on wastewater play an important role. The sources for wastewater on tunneling construction sites are various: Washing water, seepage water accumulating in construction pits, tunnel water, water used in the slurry circuit in fluid-assisted tunneling methods or water from concrete work and stone cutting all these waters are contaminated with a range of pollutants like solids, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, etc. These contaminants can be removed or treated/reduced with the help of specifically designed wastewater treatment plants (WTPs). After the treatment the cleaned water can be either, in best case, reused on the construction site itself or discharged into water utilities like the available sewer or river pin respecting their discharge requirements. Due to dwindling water resources globally, the continuously rising discharge limits and the ever more important aspect of sustainability the use of WTPs on tunneling construction site will be indispensable. In this paper, it will be presented how these systems are designed and work, what advantages they offer environmentally as well as financially and what to look out for when planning and implementing such a system onto jobsite.

The Smoky Valley Mine is jointly owned by Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, Felmont Oil Corporation and Case Pomeroy Company. Copper Range Company, a subsidiary of L.L. & E. is the operator of the mine. The mine is located about 60 miles (100 km) north of Tonopah, Nevada on Highway 376 (formerly 8A) in the Big Smoky Valley on the western flank of the Toquima Mountain Range In the shadow of Mount Jefferson. The mine is at an elevation of about 6100 ft. (1860m) and is situated on the southwestern flank of Round Mountain, the hill for which the town of Round Mountain is named. The ore is a rhyolitic iglmbrite with coarse gold occurring along fractures and with fine microscopic gold disseminated in the rock mass. Minor silver is associated nth gold. Annual mining is planned at 5.8 million tons (5.3 million tonnes) per year with 2.2 million tons (2 million tonnes) as ore (7,000 tons or 6,400 tonnes per day).

The mining complex, which the Mines Gaspé division of Noranda Mines Limited has operated in Murdochville since 1954, includes open pit and underground mines, two mills, one leaching plant and a smelter. The under- ground mining uses predominantly a large scale room and pillar method, rooms 15 m wide, 30 m high and 300 m long being common. Ore production is effected by 4.5 m3 front-end loaders and 32-tonne trucks powered respectively by 225 and 325 kW diesels. Daily dust and gas readings show that air quality can be maintained at an acceptable level with much less ventilation than that normally specified. This paper emphasizes the point that air requirements should be based on Air Quality Standards, thus allowing an operation to benefit from favourable conditions or from improvements such as exhaust treatment, fuel alteration, etc.

Introduction and Historical Background The office and mining operations of Pacific Asbestos Corporation are located near Copperopolis, California in the foothills of the Sierras about fifty miles east of Stockton. This is historic country in the heart of the old Mother Lode gold district. Mark Twain's famous story of the jumping frog, written here, is still commemorated in an annual contest in Calaveras County,' and the camp at Poker Flats, described by Bret Harte, was only a few miles from the present mine.2 Joaquin Murrieta, the famous Mexican bandit started his three year reign of terror in this vicinity,3 and Black Bart, the P08 laureate of the stagecoach robbers, held up his first stage at Funk Hill, just three miles north of the mine. His last robbery was at almost the place, on the top of the hill overlooking the Stanislaus River ferry crossing. Although this was his favorite country, and he traveled extensively through it, he was not a credit to his acclaimed profession of Mining Engineer because there is no evidence that he ever recognized the asbestos, and he was finally caught as a consequence of the robbery at the ferry.4 One of the old stagecoach roads crossed the Stanislaus River at the mine site, and the ferry landing may still be seen from the main haul road into the pit. The road itself is partly buried under the rock dumps. In spite of its location and apparently prominent exposure, the first work on the asbestos deposit was not recorded until 1904.5 Development of the present operations was started in 1959 by Jefferson Lake Asbestos Corporation, a subsidiary of Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company. Management control of the company changed hands several times and it was later reorganized under the name of Pacific Asbestos Corporation. In December, 1968, a controlling interest was acquired by H. K. Porter Company, Inc. Figure (1) shows the mill and office buildings as seen from a site near the entry road. The offices are at the left with the mill warehouse in the foreground. The conveyor at left center carrys mine concentrates up the hill from the crusher. In the background are the dry rock storage building and mill tailings piles. Since the beginning of mining operations in 1962, seven and three-quarter million tons of ore and fifteen million tons of waste have been removed from the open pit which now measures about 1400 x 1800 feet at its widest points. The lowest operating level is at an elevation of 726 feet about 325 feet below the original surface. Figure (2) shows the open pit looking toward the west end. The main haul road can be seen along the side of the pit. A shovel is operating at the bottom of the pit while a front end loader on the level above provides ore for blending. In the background are rock dumps for waste stripping. The company markets an annual production of 30-35,000 tons of chrysotile fibre in groups 4 through 7, under the Mother Lode Brand

"The traditional approach to rail tunnel fire safety design is to follow NFPA 130, which assumes a major tunnel fire could occur and requires bi-directional emergency ventilation. There is no regard to the impact of ventilation on fire growth and smoke production. In Europe and other parts of the world, the need for tunnel ventilation systems to provide smoke management in the event of fire is being questioned. The European Commission’s Safety in Railway Tunnels TSI is based on a philosophy that improved running capability (preventing fires and other events stopping the train in the tunnel) and elevated fire performance of materials means the chances of a major fire in a tunnel is highly unlikely, with only small fires expected, and no tunnel ventilation required. This approach is reinforced by the International Tunneling Association which has recently published an Engineering Methodology for Performance Based Fire Safety Design on Underground Rail Systems, which includes a methodology that does not require assessment of tenability in tunnels, but requires a scenario based risk assessment to be undertaken to determine overall fire safety measures. Recent research by the University of Edinburgh has shown that forced airflow from a mechanical ventilation system may promote fire growth and increase smoke volumes much more than with natural ventilation. Whilst the concept of no mechanical ventilation (i.e. natural ventilation) is a new concept for some, for many rail tunnels it is worthy of serious further consideration. RAIL TUNNEL SMOKE MANAGEMENT AND STANDARDS Smoke management using mechanical bi-directional ventilation systems has been a central part of the fire safety design solution under NFPA 130 for rail tunnels since 1982. The current version of the standard, NFPA 130: 2014, states that mechanical ventilation should be fitted to rail tunnels of length greater than 305 meters and an engineering analysis should be undertaken for tunnels of length 61 to 305 meters to determine whether mechanical ventilation should be fitted. However, this approach is not necessarily reflected elsewhere in the world. In Europe in particular, mechanical ventilation systems for smoke control within rail tunnels have taken a much less central role within the standards framework."

In order to obtain a better understanding of the explosion risk at the coal face, anomalies in the ignition sensitivity for different modes of ignition of hybrid mixtures of dust, methane and air were studied. Results indicated that the explosible behaviour of the working environment is highly dependent upon the ignition source and the fuel composition. For example, depending on the ignition source, the same hybrid mixture can be inert or extremely explosible. In conclusion, it is stressed how the explosion risk can be expressed in terms of a safety factor which takes into account the influence of both the fuel and the ignition source.

Metal sulfides, chiefly pyrite and mFnor sphalerlte zssociated with che Herrin (No. 6) coal member of the Pennsylvania Carbondale Formation, have been concentrated in a coal refuse deposit in southern Illinois. Oxidation of pyrite has produced highly acid waters with high concentrations of iron, zinc (up to 200 parts per million) and toxic trace elements that have leached downward to a water system perched on glacial drift. Chemical, petrographic, low-temperature ashing and x-ray diffraction were performed on cores. The data show that economic recovery of zinc and other trace metals is unlikely at this site. Energy (coal) recovery at the Superior Washer site is possible if resultant environmental problems are considered in the planning.

Continuing interest in processes that will effect separations in the fine particle size range has prompted intense interest in the use of high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) for beneficiation of uranium ores. Some of the uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by HGMS. This paper presents a brief review of the problems associated with uranium ores beneficiation, a description of the HGNS process, and the effects of the parameters--pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading and magnetic field gradient on product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGHS is related to ore specific properties such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix and interference of micron sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined.

The research work reported in in this paper deals with the monitoring of roof behavior in a drift mine located in Eastern Kentucky operating in the Coalburg Seam. The thickness of the seam at the monitoring site ranges between 9 and 10 feet with the immediate roof changing from sandstone to shale then back to sandstone. Shale thickness varies between 0 and 2.5 feet. The characteristics of the immediate shaly roof were monitored with 38 dynamometers which were set up in three survey lines to cover the entire range of shale distribution. The dynamometers are capable of providing accurate load readings in the range of +/- 5 pounds. To closely observe the contribution of moisture toward roof deterioration the dynamometers were set up in intake and neutral airways. A television borescoping camera was used in conjunction with the dynamo- metric instrumentations at pre- determined observation holes to physically observe and record the separation process of the shale and sandstone stratum with respect to time. Monitoring took place between January 1985 through January 1986 in order to cover a full cycle of dry and wet mine conditions associated with the seasonal changes. Analysis of the data show a trend of roof deterioration induced by condensation and eventual penetration of moisture within the immediate roof bedding planes, leading to rapid disintegration of the mine roof.
