This paper describes the design of a wellfield to provide a water supply for a new mine in southern Africa. A hydrogeological investigation was conducted that included the drilling and test pumping of eight wells located within a highly jointed pyroxenite aquifer. The wellfield was designed using a simple probabilistic analysis. This approach allowed the variability of the aquifer parameters to be taken into account. A risk assessment analysis was then carried out to evaluate the level of assurance that a reliable water supply could be provided by the wellfield. The analysis was also used to assess the effects of supplementing the water supply by pumping from nearby flooded workings.

The Hladysz Rock Tester was developed at the South Dakota School of Mines as a portable rock strength tester. The hand held device is placed against a rock surface and struck by a hammer. The impacted force causes a steel ball in the device nose piece to indent the rock and simultaneously indent a standard steel bar also contained in the nose piece. By comparing the two indented diameters the compressive strength of the rock can be calculated using laboratory determined correlation coefficients.

Section 317(e) of the Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act of 1969 directed the Secretary of the Interior to prepare standards under which all working places in a mine shall be illuminated by permissible' lighting while persons are working in such places. Section 317(e) further provides that such Working places shall be illuminated within 18 months after such standards are promulgated. In accordance with this section of the Act, there was published in the Federal Register for December 31,1970 a notice of proposed ru1emaking which prescribed the illumination to be provided in the working p1 aces of underground coal mines. In 1ight of written comments, suggestions, and objections to this proposed ru1emaking, the proposed standards were with-drawn and reproposed in the Federal Register for Wednesday, October 27, 1971. In light of further comments, suggestions, and objections, a public hearing was held on April 4, 1974 and standards were again reproposed and published in the Federal Register for April 1, 1976. Promulgation of the final lighting standards took place on October 1, 1976 which means that the underground coal mining industry must comply with face illumination requirements by April 1, 1978. As mentioned previously, the first proposed ru1emaking for illumination of underground coal mines was published in the Federal Register on October 27, 1971. In early 1972, Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) and the United States Bureau of Mines agreed to a cooperative study of underground face illumination; Conso1 felt that expertise in this field would become increasingly important. Conso1's initial efforts in illumination were aimed at investigati.ng practical lighting systems for underground face equipment. We were concerned with installing unobtrusive lights which provided sufficient face illumination for safety, but at the same time were readily maintainable, electrically reliable, and physically sheltered from damage.

In the course of the grinding experiments conducted at Climax over the past twenty years one interesting phenomenon was discovered. This was that balls made of certain types of steel grind more ore than some others. The most significant variation was found in the results secured with a hard alloyed forged bail compared with the forged carbon ball supplied by most ball manufacturers These findings were confirmed in many repeated controlled tests. The value of these tests depends on the methods used, the facilities available and the care with which the investigations were conducted. These are described in the following. This testing has largely been done in eight 91 x 81 low discharge ball mills in closed circuit with 7811 duplex screw classifiers. The mills run at 20 RPM on a feed approximately minus 3/8 inch. The ore is ground through 28 - 35 mesh in one stage. Each mill and auxiliary classifier is in a separate, parallel grinding and flotation section The, ore to each: section is the same in every particular and is fed to each mill bin from a common conveyor tripper. The ore from the bin to the ball mill is weighed on a conveyor scale. The power input to each mill motor is determined with a watt hour meter which measures the power to the mill motor only. Both the scales and meters are checked periodically by standard methods and have been found to give consistent readings. Automatic samplers are employed on each section to obtain accurate measurement of the size reduction. A size analysis of the classifier overflow is made each shift and a composite size analysis is obtained from a weighted average of the various shift analyses. The mills are driven by 450 horsepower synchronous motors so that there is no speed variation and shell liner age is kept as nearly the same as possible in mills under test. The same set of operators is assigned to a mill under test as to the control mill. In all other particulars such as ball load, mill density, liner design, etc., the mills are operated in precisely the same manner. This is an ideal arrangement for plant testing. From observations of ball mill performance over the past twenty years, it is the opinion of the operating staff that variations of as little as one to two percent in mill capacities may be determined if sufficient operating hours are devoted, to a test. Relations between mill capacities, fineness of grinds and power consumptions have been established with a high degree of accuracy. In Table I are given the figures for one test. These show that while the grind with the hard ball was slightly coarser, the tons ground per hour was 5.4 percent greater with the soft ball, and 6.1 percent greater on the basis of minus 100 mesh produced. The power consumed per ton with the hard ball was 4.4 percent greater on a tons per hour basis. The soft ball was inferior in wearing qualities and steel consumption per ton of ore was 24 percent greater with it. In this test the mills were charged with the two different balls for a period of three months to allow the ball loads to come to equilibrium. In Table II are given the specifications of the two balls. The difference in grinding rates may be accounted for by the nature of the ball surfaces. The surfaces of the soft balls after being worn a while are rougher to the touch. Enlarged photographs of the worn-in surfaces of hard and soft balls are shown in Figure I. These show the presence of scratches or skid marks on the hard ball surface which indicates less nipping effect. The Climax ore pulp has a pH of 6.0 and is in a dispersed state. The viscosity is low compared with most ores especially those that are conditioned with lime. This would lower the tendency of the pulp to adhere to the balls with a lower grinding efficiency as a result. It was also thought that the relative rates of wear from surface to center might affect the make-up of an equilibrium ball charge. This probably has little effect on capacity as shown by the size analyses of the two ball charges in Table III. This hypothesis was subsequently investigated by the use of rationed charges. Since the late 19th Century, scholars have been concerned about finding proper methods of managing business. The search seems to be taking us full-circle to the time and motion studies of Taylor (Horn, 1987). It wasn't until the late 1970's, however, that systematic investigations were made in the mining industry. One of the first was a study by Sanders, Patterson, and Peay (1976). That project explored the relationship of attitudes and safety. Peay, Atkin, and Goodman (1977, then reviewed the whole area of Organizational Development, including the so-called Rushton experiment.

While the cost of transporting raw phosphate matrix from a pit to a processing plant via slurry pipelines is more efficient than it could be by rail cars, conventional trucks or belt conveyors, it still amounts to many millions of dollars, and in many areas there still exists much room for improvement. By taking advantage of pipeline test data on different slurries, it is possible to reduce costs by optimizing pipeline diameters, operating velocities and slurry concentrations. Better wearing, more efficient pump designs are now available which, if applied correctly, can lead to significant savings. The authors discuss what benefits are possible in relation to the electrical operating and wear maintenance costs and go into some of the factors associated with taking advantage of these benefits, identifying what they see as being practically possible.

The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores and, for major veins, their great vertical range (>990m). Less well-documented are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine, and volcaniclastic rocks deposited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals Here precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate, and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfide and precious metal telluride-s. Wallrock alteration is quite limited adjacent to veins and somewhat more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias.

The paper presents models of auxiliary ventilation systems with leaky ducts and algorithms for calculations of pressure loss, air leakage, and volume flow ratio and pressure fans. Two basic models are discussed: 1st model for a duct with leakage through the flange joints; 2nd model for a duct with an equivalent longitudinal aperture. The present analytical system has been successfully applied to developing of computer software named DAVentS. A. sample problem is used to illustrate efficiency and accuracy of DAVents software in solving most common problems in process of designing AVS.

The paper suggests a new empirical model for predicting mining subsidence. The parameters considered are Lithological Factor, which in this context meant percentage of sandstone, Rock Mass Factor (depending upon the RQD value of drill-hole cores), width: depth ratio and percentage extraction of coal. More than 250 drill-hole cores from seven longwall panels and 11 bord-and pillar (room-and-pillar) workings were analyzed from an extensive data bank of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. (S.C.Co.), Andhra Pradesh, India. Excellent subsidence agreement was found with the suggested model.

Geological interpretations generally require projections from direct observations at the earth's surface. Crustal projections include mineral deposits as well as the geochemistry of the crust and its fluids, structure and tectonics. Drilling offers opportunities for verification of the required projections, and is thus a required step in furthering crustal understanding. Like any new science, the direct observations that drilling provides commonly generate major surprises and stimulate totally new ideas. Drilling is costly. There are many critically important scientific problems with societal and potential economic benefits in mineral deposits which have not been drilled because the holes are difficult to justify as economically sound risks for private capital. Such holes, however, are highly justifiable research goals for government because of the significant new opportunity for ore deposit insight and exploration that they afford. The earth science community is prepared with excellent drilling projects for research in mineral deposits.

My objective is to make each and everyone here aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, covered wagons or whatever. If this is your only exposure to the transportation industry then you probably spent most of your life in a cave.

Imaging spectroscopy is a relatively new remote sensing tool that provides a rapid method to screen entire mining districts for potential sources of surface acid drainage. An imaging spectrometer known as the Airborne Visible/InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) measures light reflected from the surface in 224 spectral channels from 0.4 - 2.5 µm. Spectral data from this instrument were used to evaluate mine waste at the California Gulch Superfluid Site near Leadville, Colorado. Here, the process of pyrite oxidation at the surface produces acidic water that is gradually neutralized as it drains away from mine waste, depositing a central jarosite zone surrounded by a jarosite + goethite zone, in turn surrounded by a goethite zone with a discontinuous hematite rim zone. Leaching tests show that pH is most acidic in the jarosite and jarosite + goethite zones and is near-neutral in the goethite zone. Measurements indicate that metals leach from minerals and amorphous materials in the jarosite + goethite and jarosite zones at concentrations 10 - 50 times higher than from goethite zone minerals. Goethite zones that fully encircle mine waste may indicate some attenuation of leachate metals and thus reduced metal loading to streams. The potential for impact by acidic drainage is highest where streams intersect the jarosite and jarosite + goethite zones. In these areas, metal-rich acidic dace runoff may flow directly into streams. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates (U.S. EPA, 1998) that mineral maps made from AVIRIS data at Leadville have accelerated remediation efforts by two years and saved over $2 million in cleanup costs.

Side spalling/skin failure occurs due to the high-induced stress in underground structures. In such cases, rock bolting or other support systems are being used to control the skin failure or spalling of the pillar. The nature of these support systems is passive, which acts during the deformation. These support systems restrict the displacement considerably of the side/or roof surface of the excavation. Ultimately, it improves the stability of the structure because of the increment in residual strength of rock mass. It is noted that these passive support systems give very low confinement in the range of 0–0.015 MPa at the onset of failure. As the level of confinement will be very low and dependent with progress of failure, triaxial test was not found practically suitable. Thus, an alternative procedure of testing has been proposed. In the procedure, sides of sample have been restricted little bit by using adhesive tape. It provides the limited boundness on the lateral direction (LBLD) of rock specimen. The uniaxial compression strength (UCS) test has been performed on 30 numbers of cylindrical rock specimens using the servo-controlled stiff testing machine. Specifically, two rock types (medium-coarse–grained and coarse-grained rocks) were studied in terms of stress–strain behaviour so that a full residual strength envelope for each specimen was obtained. This study reveals that the residual strength of limited confined rock specimens has been significantly increased as compared to unconfined rock for both groups of rock types. The average residual strength of LBLD specimens of fine-grained rock and medium coarse-grained rock has been increased around 12 times, and five times as compared to unconfined rock, respectively. The average peak strength of LBLD rock specimens has been increased in the range of 30.5 to 48.6% for coarse-grained rock. The results of this study have been presented in terms of peak strength, residual strength and Young’s modulus of rock, and the post-peak failure behaviour of rock specimens was also critically analysed through a stress–strain curve.

The decision to accelerate development of Stillwater Mining’s East Boulder Mine was made in March of 1998. It required the completion of conceptual designs by July of 1998. This was accomplished through teamwork and close cooperation of mine personnel, engineering firms and vendors, all working toward the common goal of developing an efficient and workable design. Early in the project, representatives of Stillwater Mining, Kilborn International, Parsons Brinckerhoff Transit and RailSystems, Continental Conveyor, and H.A. Simons met to develop methods to bring the mine into production at a highly accelerated rate and to solve potential bottlenecks, including the movement of personnel, materials, and muck through a 5.6 km(3-1/2 mile) adit. This interaction, including companies not normally associated with the mining industry, led to innovative approaches and designs produced by Kilborn Engineering and Stillwater Mining.

An AFM has been applied to study in situ the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite in aqueous solutions. The AFM images show that fluorite surface becomes smoother with the adsorption of 7 × 10-5 M oleic acid solution at pH 9. Force measurement shows that fluorite is strongly positively charged in water at pH 6, suggesting a neglectable surface carbonation of fluorite. The adsorption of oleic acid at pH 9 renders fluorite more and more negatively charged. The surface morphology change of fluorite as shown by the AFM images suggests that oleic acid chemisorbs on fluorite at pH 9. Increasing temperature can help increase the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite. It may also improve the lateral polymerization of unsaturated oleic acid on fluorite as suggested by the smoother mineral surface in oleic acid solutions at an elevated temperature.

Of the variables affecting the electrical properties of coal measure rocks, water content is by far the most important, This paper describes specially developed apparatus and methods of measuring electrical conductivity and permittivity at constant humidity conditions. Electrical properties variations were measured for Applachian and Illinois, U.S.A. coal 2 basin samples in the frequency range 2 X 10 to 2 X 10 Hz. Coal measure rock electrical behavior, when correlated with mechanical behavior, is potentially useful in a number of mining applications.

Flotation collectors play a crucial role in mineral flotation by selectively adhering to mineral surfaces and aiding in their separation from gangue material. They are heteropolar molecules, as defined by Sutherland and Wark (1955), featuring non-polar hydrocarbon chains and polar groups interacting with mineral surfaces to induce hydrophobicity selectively. The importance of collectors in mineral processing, as underscored by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010), lies in their ability to enhance recovery rates and improve selectivity, thereby optimizing the extraction of valuable minerals from complex ores. Collectors are classified based on their mechanism of action, as proposed by Laskowski (2010). This classification categorizes collectors into three groups: water-soluble compounds, water-insoluble “oily” collectors, and water-insoluble amphipathic compounds forming molecular films at the water/gas interface. This complements the chemical structure-based classification by Sutherland and Wark (1955) and Suoninen and Laajalehto (1993), offering a comprehensive understanding of collector diversity in flotation systems. Collector selection is an iterative process crucial for optimizing mineral processing efficiency, as emphasized by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010). Understanding the significance of collector mixing or synergy outcomes is paramount for enhancing mineral flotation efficiency and sustainability. Taguta, O’Connor, and McFadzean (2018) demonstrate that mixed collector systems enhance interaction enthalpies and microflotation recoveries, indicating improved performance. McFadzean, Castelyn, and O’Connor (2012), along with Critchley and Riaz (1991), delve into investigating synergistic interactions between collectors, offering insights for strategic selection. Observations from the study of collector synergy, as noted by Wakamatsu et al. (1980), reveal nuanced relationships surpassing individual collector behaviors. The methodology outlined in this paper provides valuable guidance for classifying and selecting collectors based on specific application needs, while also suggesting the potential for synergistically improving recovery across fine, intermediate, and coarse particles.

Improved desulfurization of Illinois coals is a widely Shared research goal. The development of a physical cleaning strategy and the results of a project to demonstrate technical and economic feasibility of producing a low sulfur compliance coal from the Illinois Basin are reported. Processing flowsheets to extend or retrofit existing preparation plants are considered. Comminution, conventional and micro-bubble flotation, and selective agglomeration technologies were investigated to maximize pyrite rejection while maintaining high product yield. Batch bench scale testing was followed by continuous pilot plant studies. Parameters included grind size, flow rates, pulp density, aeration, agitation, and reagent dose. An economic evaluation of targeted processes is included.

A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high loss-of-ignition (LOI)fly ash. Using froth flotation to achieve selective separations requires long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash — low LOI ash and a high-carbon product suit-able for reburning or further upgrading.

Pilot plant operations are described for the treatment of manganiferous zinc concentrates from the Gamsberg ore deposit in South Africa via conventional electrolytic zinc processing. Two methods were employed for the control of excess manganese ions in the pilot plant electrolyte involving (1) chemical oxidation and (2) anodic oxidation. The chemical oxidation method for manganese control was very successful. It also was found that the addition of manganese dioxide ore was not required for oxidation of ferrous iron during the neutral leach or jarosite precipitation steps. A new method (JAR process) for iron removal also was tested in the pilot plant.
