The U. S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the application of fiber optic technology to methane and carbon monoxide monitoring. A methane monitoring system is described that is based on differential absorption of infrared light. It can detect concentrations as low as 0.2% and as far away as 2 km via fiber optic cable. The upper range is 100% methane. The system requires no electrical power within the mine so it should operate safely under mine disaster conditions. A hybrid carbon monoxide monitoring system is described that combines a low-powered electrochemical cell with fiber optic telemetry. Testing has shown the system can operate maintenance- free for several months.

The Umuna epithermal precious metal deposit has provided the target for a simulated rock geochemistry exploration program, directed at bedrock exposed in the drainage system of eastern Misima Island. A geochemical halo to the deposit is readily recognised in the mafic meta-volcanic country rock. This halo is defined by anomalous results for both major (K, Na, Ca, Mg) and minor (Au, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ba, Rb, Sr, Cs, Bi, Ga, S) element geochemistry, extending further than 1km from the deposit. Such halos are sufficiently extensive to provide adequate exploration targets in the search for epithermal mineralisation, complementing mineralogic and secondary media geochemical investigations.

Eight Mine Weather Stations (MWS) installed at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) to monitor the underground ventilation system me helping to simulate real-time ventilation scenarios. Seasonal weather extremes can result in variations of Natural Ventilation Pressure (NVP) which can significantly affect the ventilation system. The eight MWS(s) (which previously collected and stored temperature, barometric pressure and relative humidity data for subsequent NVP calculations) were upgraded to provide continuous real-time data to the site wide Central Monitoring System. This data can now be utilized by the ventilation engineer to create real-time ventilation simulations and trends which assist in the prediction and mitigation of NVP and psychrometric related events.

Cortez Gold Mine (C.G.M.) is located in Lander County, Nevada, approximately 80 miles southwest of Elko, Nevada. It is accessed via Nevada State Highway 306 south from Interstate 80. This operation is a joint venture between Placer Dome U. S. Inc. (60% operator) and Kennecott Corporation (40%). The claims which supply oxide and refractory ore feed to the Cortez milling facility are located in both Lander and Eureka Counties. These include the Cortez and Horse Canyon deposits all operated by C.G.M. Joint Venture. Other deposits outside the C.G.M. claim area include; Fire Creek, Buckhorn, Gold Bar and Tonkin Springs. These deposits all occur along the Battle Mountain/Eureka Trend.

When an open pit mine is deepened, more and more waste rock must normally be removed. Techniques for optimization of open pit design are well-established within the mining industry. The recommended method is to choose the open pit alternative with the highest net present capital value of open pit and future underground mining. When the open pit is mined out, the operation must be closed, or, if it is profitable, mining must start underground. When planning an underground operation we experience the same type of optimization problem that occurs when determining the optimal depth for open pit mining. When mining underground the ore body is often divided into a number of areas, blocks or slices, each containing a transportation system with trains, trucks, conveyors, etc. When all the ore within such a part of the deposit is extracted, the operation must be closed, or, if it is profitable, a new transportation must be developed. The question that now arises is: how large a pan of a deposit shall be included in the first development and how much shall be left for future consideration?

This is a final progress report on a cooperative project conducted by three private feldspar companies,** North Carolina State University, and the federal Bureau of Mines. The object of the project was to reduce the feldspar tailings disposal problems at the flotation plants in the Spruce Pine area of North Carolina. The initial phase of the project revealed that high tonnages of saleable feldspar and quartz were lost in the tailings and the three feldspar companies are now concentrating their efforts on feldspar recovery, either by reclamation from the tailings as suggested by the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory or by improvements in metallurgy in the existing plants.

Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) facility has operated since May 1986. The original facility had a design capacity of 22.6 kt/a (25,000 stpy) of electrowon copper cathode produced by processing pregnant leach solution from an open pit-heap leach operation. In 1988, the plant was expanded to 45.3 kt/ a (50,000 stpy) to incorporate processing in-situ leach solutions. This pager focuses primarily on the heap leaching area with regard to exploration, testing, feasibility, permitting, design and construction, and operating practices. Research using surfactant leaching aids to enhance copper recovery is also discussed.

A single four feet diameter cell, treating a Cu/Mo rougher concentrate, has been fully instrumented and linked to a Distributed Control System. This has enabled the writers to further understand the mechanics of operation of the cell, particularly that of the "TRANSITION ZONE". This is the volume between the feed port and the pulp-froth inter- face. The results have shown a need for the re-designing the control loops whereby the Transition Zone volume (or pulp level ) becomes the single most important control parameter to achieve the de- sired recovery. Air consumption, previously thought to have played this role, is now kept at precoalescence level s for maximum efficiency.

Effective coal mine face ventilation, for remotely controlled and automated mining systems, is essential for the control of methane. The evolution of new mining equipment and methods has required changes and improvements in face ventilation methods. One emphasis today is on the use of remotely operated and automated mining systems that can be used to make continuous cuts of 6 m (20 ft) and deeper. U.S. Bureau of Mines research is studying ways to more effectively ventilate these extended cuts. Two face ventilation techniques that utilize either blowing brattice or a jet fan for deep cutting are examined in this paper. Bureau of Mines procedures for evaluating face ventilation systems are also discussed.

The use of warm (40-50°C) solution for the selective elution (pre-strip) of copper cyanide from gold and silver cyanides adsorbed on activated carbon was found to elute +90% of the adsorbed copper compared to the use of ambient (20°C) solution eluting 50-70% of the adsorbed copper. The warm solution pre-strip elution did have higher co-elution of gold (1-4%) and silver (10-18%) with the copper. The use of ambient solution pre-strip elution co-eluted less gold (0.2%) and silver (2%).

Nevada is especially well endowed with industrial minerals, both in the number of ore deposits and the diversity of commodities. More than 600 significant industrial mineral deposits, containing 22 principal commodities, are present, in the State. The materials produced in Nevada in 1978 had a value of approximately 113 million dollars, and additional processing of some of them (e.g. gypsum into wallboard, limestone and clay into cement) added considerable more value. Table 1 shows the value of Nevada's industrial mineral production in 1978. Nevada currently supplies 85 percent of the country's barite producing 1.6 million tonnes (1.8 million short tons) valued at 30 million dollars in 1978. Nevada is second in diatomite production and contributes one-third of total lithium produced. Other industrial minerals being produced include clays, fluorspar, gypsum, lightweight aggregates, limestone and dolomite, magnesite and brucite, perlite, salt, sand and gravel, and silica. In general, Nevada produces high-value industrial minerals which are not consumed within the State, but rather, are shipped out of State. In contrast, most more populous states produce larger tonnages of lower value industrial minerals which are consumed chiefly within that state.

There are many types of filters designed to separate a solid from a liquid, including plate and frame presses, pressure leaf filters, gravity filters and vacuum filters. This discussion will be limited to continuous vacuum filtration and, specifically, to continuous rotary vacuum disc filters, drum filters and horizontal belt filters. The use of vacuum filtration can be advantageous in that: 1. The feed slurry can be delivered to the filter either by gravity or by a simple, inexpensive low pressure pump that only has to overcome the resistance of the feed piping system. 2. The filter equipment does not have to withstand high pressures. Consequently, a wide range of materials of construction, including plastic and fiberglas reinforced polyester (FRP), can be used in the fabrication. 3. After the form time, the filter cake is exposed to the atmosphere and the cake is accessible for further operations such as mechanical or physical dewatering, washing, and sampling on a continuous basis. 4. The discharge of the dewatered solids is continuous for directly feeding to the next operation; for example, a dryer. 5. Various methods of discharge can be fitted to the filter to effect optimum discharge of the dewatered cake solids. The principal of operation of a vacuum filter, regardless of type, is basically the same. The filter incorporates a filter medium supported on a drainage system and arranged so that the mixture to be separated (feed slurry) can be introduced to one side of the filter medium on which the solids are trapped and through which the liquid (filtrate) flows due to the applied vacuum.

Solution flow in leach dumps and heaps or in columns of representative rock has been the subject of only limited studies. This is a regime involving unsaturated flow in semiconsolidated rock with a wide size distribution. Even the concepts of continuous flow systems are fairly recent, and have evolved from the search for better methods of operating industrial chemical reactors. (1-3) Waste rock consolidation and permeability play a key role in solution flow characteristics. Harris (4) suggested that bulk density variations in a leach dump could alter the particle-to-particle contact, and that large particle aggregates could act like single, large particles . In the limiting case where the bulk density approaches that of the undisturbed, consolidated rock, the entire waste unit would behave as a single particle. Roman (5) treated the phenomenon of bulk density and its effect on consolidation in terms of lixiviant flow paths or solution channeling in leach dumps. Like Harris, he assumed that no solution moved through particles or particle aggregates associated with zones of high bulk density. Solution flow paths are thus effectively separated by particle regimes, creating solution channels in the waste body. While some attempts have been made to describe solution flow in leach dumps and related systems by utilizing computer model approaches and laboratory- scale simulations (5,6), there have been no direct, large-scale observations of solution movement in channels or of the actual channel sizes and distributions within a waste body. This paper describes a series of experiments involving large-scale, controlled waste leaching tests, conducted over a period of several years, and aimed at providing some direct observation of the changes in waste consolidation and permeability, the size and distribution of solution channels, the movement of such channels with continued solution application, and other features relating to solution flow during the leaching of low-grade waste. These results are then combined with mineralogical information to explain observed leach behavior.

The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

"In Pennsylvania’s rich mining history, various forms of room-and-pillar mining have been in use for over 150 years. Longwall mining, introduced in the late 1960s, occupies only the last 60 of those 150 years and now represents the dominant method of extracting coal in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The introduction of longwall mining allowed larger quantities of coal to be extracted in safer and more efficient manners than room-and-pillar mining. However, the associated formation of subsidence basins have elevated both the number and intensity of watersource and surface structure impacts. When these first longwall panels were mined the factors responsible for these impacts were poorly understood and regulations were focused only on surface structures. Today, with over 600 panels mined under a wide range of conditions, these factors are known and regulations have developed to help mitigate water supply and surface structure impacts.The cause and severity of surface effects are thought to be dependent on multiple factors, including the location within the subsidence basin, overburden, panel width, and orientation of the panel. The changing characteristics of over 600 longwall panels mined in the last 60 years are analyzed to determine factors important in subsidence related surface impacts. This study compares the location of the surface impacts with the longwall panel size, overburden, and maximum predicted vertical subsidence. The data shows that changing these characteristics are impacting surface features in a significant manner as measured by the number of company liable reported effects.INTRODUCTIONLongwall mining has occurred in Pennsylvania for over 60 years, and at the current mining rates, longwall mining is expected to continue in the Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Coalbed until the reserves are exhausted. Figure 1 shows all mining that has occurred in the Pittsburgh Coalbed, as well as the area that is left to mine. It is predicted that there are 40 years left of longwall mining on the Pittsburgh Coalbed, under the assumption that 50% of the total 280,000 acres will be mined at the current rate of 3500 acres/year."

The Plymouth Tunnel forms part of the 16-mile long route of the Purple Line Light Rail Project promoted by the Maryland Transit Administration. The tunnel is approximately 1,220 feet in length with a shallow vertical alignment located beneath a residential area. Challenging mixed ground conditions included surficial soils, decomposed Saprolite, and highly weathered to fresh rock requiring the use of the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) for construction. This paper discusses innovative approaches implemented during construction as well as challenges faced during planning and installation of a spray-applied permanent concrete liner.

OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry' broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. To help local governments plan for long-term supplies of sand and gravel for buildings and infrastructure, the Utah Geological Survey is assessing natural aggregate resources (mainly sand and gravel) in the St. George, Utah area. Whereas much of the aggregate in the study area is adequate for road-base construction, high-quality aggregate for Port- land cement concrete is limited due to geology, and also due to land administration and environmental issues. Virgin River alluvial gravels southwest of St. George are generally poor sources of aggregate because they contain clasts of soft sediments and soluble minerals derived from Mesozoic rocks. Elsewhere, widespread secondary calcium carbonate (caliche), as rinds and matrix in gravel, lower the quality of material. Young river-terrace deposits in Fort Pearce Wash, and along the Virgin River above St. George are the primary sources of sand and gravel for the area. Alluvial fans on the east side of the Beaver Dam Mountains, and on the west side of the Hurricane Cliffs are also sources of aggregate. Stream-channel deposits associated with "inverted valleys" north of the towns of St. George and Hurricane, Utah, and older pediment gravels on the west flank of the Beaver Dam Mountains may be future sources of high-quality aggregate. Accelerated urban development during the 1980s and early 1990s has caused St. George and other communities in Washington County to encroach upon sand and gravel pits originally located in rural, undeveloped areas. Urban residents often view nearby sand and gravel operations as undesirable neighbors and pressure elected officials to close the pits. Pit closures effectively eliminate the remaining reserve from the sand and gravel resource base of the area. More- over, resources may also be lost as new homes are built upon undeveloped sand and gravel deposits. The St. George area is particularly susceptible to loss of aggregate resources because high-quality natural aggregate for construction is already in short supply. Moreover, most of the land in the study area is administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and subject to various land-use restrictions. Much of this public land cannot be developed for mineral materials, such as sand and gravel, because of federal regulations protecting rare plants and animals, archaeological sites, and important watershed areas. Of particular concern to resource development are areas designated as Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, Wilderness Areas, and Wilderness Study Areas. Protection for Endangered Species is a critical element in all planning efforts. Those species present in the St. George area or in areas near- by include: the desert tortoise, southwestern willow flycatcher, Virgin River chub, and dwarf bearclaw poppy. As the St. George area is depleted and/or deprived of sand and gravel resources through extraction and urbanization respectively, construction costs will rise unless conservation measures are instituted. To avoid the loss of aggregate resources, the UGS is pursuing a program of data gathering and field surveying of surficial deposits to determine tonnage and quality of the remaining sand and gravel resources. The resource information from this program will help land planners, developers, and government officials make informed decisions concerning urban development throughout the region.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) occurs in high sulfur coal and heavy metal mining environments. We show remediation methods using 3D numerical ground water flow models and chemical kinetics of pyrite oxidation for acid leaching of pyrite during air and ground water flow. A recently developed numerical model couples air and water flow with kinetics of iron-reactive bacteria, oxygen transport, specific chemical reaction rates, and pyrite oxidation to calculate migration control of pollution. A model is presented which considers diminution of acid mine drainage in pyrite rich ore bodies by raising the potentiometric surface through a vadose zone to reduce acid mine drainage. A ground water model is presented of an initially saturated mountain, containing an adit, with a sloping ground water table. Ground water recharge consists of snowfall and normal precipitation. Simulations indicate that the historically open adit creates a desaturated mountain above the adit. Significant air saturation ranging from 10-90% oxygen can occur to depths of the adit (-270 m). Remediation consists of plugging the adit, which fill s adit and mountain with water from recharge. Plugging the adit required <10 years for resaturation and rise of the water table in the mountain.

INTRODUCTION Continuous mining machines are used in regular flat ore beds having uniform thickness. Since coal is the most common type of material occurring in such beds, most continuous miners are used for the extraction of coal from underground mines. The first continuous mining machine for under¬ground coal mining was introduced in 1948. In one machine, the continuous miner combines the functions performed by a conventional face drill, a cutting ma¬chine, and a loading machine. It breaks or digs the material out of the surrounding solid and transfers the material back through the machine chassis by means of a chain conveyor. The conveyor carries the material to a haulage system, usually a rubber-tired vehicle known as a shuttle car. Generally, continuous miners are used in seam heights from 890 to 3660 mm (35 to 144 in.). For seam heights of 1070 mm (42 in.) or less, the haulage system may be a multiple-bridge conveyor or battery-powered tractors that haul low-bed trailers. Proj¬ects are being undertaken by private industry and through government contracts to develop a continuous haulage system for all seam heights. As of 1976, the majority of continuous miners were of two types. The first type is the drum miner, which mounts the cutting elements on a series of drums across the cutting head of the machine, sometimes using a cutting chain to cut clearance for the gear drive. In the drum-type machines, the cutting head rotates parallel to the material face. The second type is the auger miner, which utilizes cutting elements mounted on two auger-type cutting heads. One head is located on each side of the machine, with the heads mounted per¬pendicular to the material face. Chain-head ripper-type miners/miners having rotary cutting elements with oscillating motion and twin-head boring-type miners have all been popular within the last 15 years. Although these are considered obsolete, some machines are still being supplied for specialized applications. GENERAL DESCRIPTION This chapter describes only continuous mining ma¬chines available as manufacturers&apos; production models as of September 1976. Figs. 1 through 11 illustrate some typical machines currently in use. Cutting Elements The cutting elements are the interface between the machine and the material being mined. In describing the cutting elements, consideration must be given to the differences between the drum- and auger-type machines, the bit-tip speeds, and the bit types. Drum-Type Continuous Mining Machines: Three of the four principal manufacturers of drum-type miners use multi-motor designs that provide separate a-c motors for driving the cutting elements. Gear trains are used to reduce the speeds of the motors to the rotational speeds of the cutting elements. One of the three suppliers drives the cutting elements of its low-seam models with a heavy-duty drive chain that is equipped with cutting bits; all other functions of this machine have separate motor drives that are either electrical or hydraulic. The fourth principal manufacturer generally provides two a-c electric motors, utilizing gear reducers, drive shafts, and hydraulically operated engaging clutches to power all of the operating functions, including the cut¬ting elements. Some drum-type miners use trim chains, equipped with cutting bits, to cut clearance for the gear drives. These trim chains vary from two 305-mm (12-in.) chains to one 760-mm (30-in.) chain per machine, de¬pending upon the manufacturer&apos;s design concept. In all machines other than the low-seam models that use chains to drive the heads, the trim chains are driven by sprockets on the drive shaft of the final cutterhead drum; therefore, the trim chains are not used for power trans¬mission to the cutting elements. In addition to cutting clearance for the gear drives, the trim chains provide uniform bit spacing all the way across the head and assist in moving the cut material to an area where it is either loaded directly into the miner&apos;s conveyor or is easier to load into the conveyor. On a drum-type mining machine, the cutting ele¬ments all rotate from the top to the bottom. Therefore, the recommended procedure is to raise the cutterhead to the maximum seam height, sump the entire machine forward to maximum depth by means of a crawler drive, and then shear downward until the cutter elements reach the floor level. The maximum sump depth varies ac¬cording to the drum diameter, the type of material, the floor conditions, and the operator&apos;s abilities. It normally varies an average of 460 to 760 mm (18 to 30 in.). Cutter drums are supplied with two types of cutting bit holders. Weld-on holders are attached permanently. Pin-on holders are replaceable at the face. Cutter-drum diameters over the bit tips vary from 660 to 965 mm (26 to 38 in.), depending upon the chassis height of the machine and the range of cutting heights. Auger-Type Continuous Mining Machines: As cut-
