One of the major problems in the exploitation of deep copper ore deposits in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper Field is ground control and, in particular, roof control of the headings. The depth of copper deposits ranges from 600 to 1200 m. The parameters of ore-bearing rocks and the surrounding rocks show considerable variance of strength properties along the mining thickness (Fig. 1). The roof of the openings exploitation headings consists of dolomite-calciferous rocks. The roof strata consist of layers, the thickness of which vary from several centimeters to 0.6 m (sometimes to 1.0 m). These strata differ in strength and are characterized by igneous and sedimentary discontinuities. On the basis of studies in structure, properties and geological mining conditions of the roof strata in Polish copper mines, the method of roof classification has been developed. (1) This method uses the stability index "L" of the roof, calculated from [ ] The value of "t" ranges from 0, l to 0,8. Based on the value of "L", four classes of the roof (Table 1) corresponding to different degrees of fall hazard have been developed. The mining of copper ore deposit is carried out by a single lift room-and-pillar mining system or a two-stage room-and-pillar system with roof caving. (3, 4). The single lift room-and-pillar mining system is most often used. It consists in working of the deposit of 2.5 to 4.5 m mining thickness, 150-350 m long mining line, consisting of parallel room faces 6 m wide with pillars 5.7 or 16 m wide. As the mining line advances, cross-cuts joining individual rooms are made, thus forming support pillars 3x5, 7x7, 5x16, and 7x16 m (Fig. 2). The two-stage system (Fig. 3) mines the deposit with rooms 6 m wide into blocks 25 x 35 x 25 x 45 m. During the second step these pillars are worked with rooms and cross-cuts into pillars about 3 x 4 to 4 x 5 m (retreat mining). The pillars are crushed just before the fall of the roof. The maximum opening of workings in the two-step system is about 10 m, i.e. one belt entry and one row of bearing pillars. In single lift room-and-pillar systems it is about 35 m., i.e. three belt entries and three rows of bearing pillars. The support of the headings consists of expansion bolts 1.6-1.8 m installed in a bolting pattern 1.1 x 1.5 m. In both systems the fall step is about 10 m, i.e. the width of a belt and a bearing pillar. The Indications of Rock Mass Pressure Individual Dog Heading Individual dog headings are set wide apart from each other in the unmined ore deposit area where there is no interaction of headings. The indication of rock mass pressure are, in such cases, limited to the deformations and damage of side walls. Radiometric studies of rock mass loosening showed that the maximum range of lifts in side-walls immediately after web was 2 m (4,5). In the course of time the cracked side rocks fall off, thus widening the heading. The morphology of side-walls is influenced by the location of the heading in relation to clump layer/tarry. "Increasing demand and market economics have pushed the mining industry to adopt improved mining practices and minimize losses. Simulation, in this regard, has proved to be an efficient tool to help in decision making purposes. We present the development of a discrete event simulation model for a large-scale open pit mine to run experimental scenarios for near optimal decision making. A mixed integer linear goal programming (MILGP) optimization model is also presented for shovel allocation optimization. The mathematical model will be coupled with the simulation model at the dispatching stage for shovel allocation optimization and thus it will act as the link to optimal short-term schedule to assist in achieving better mine plan compliance across short-term and operational planning time horizons. The main contribution of this work so far is the development of the MILGP model and development, implementation and verification of the simulation model on a large scale oil sands open pit mine case study. The results obtained so far are promising and have been validated against the historical data of the mine, proving the applicability of the model for experimental scenario analysis. INTRODUCTION It is essential for mining operations to adopt efficient operational methods and technologies to cope with market demand and economics. Mining operations, on the other hand, being capital intensive, find it risky to bring in any changes. Simulation is a tool that can help in this regard for better decision making purposes with an improved and quantitative measure of confidence. A true representative model that satisfies the objectives set for the simulation is essential to achieve its applicability for decision making purposes. A similar simulation model is presented in this paper for analyzing the operational KPIs of a large scale oil sand open pit mine with truck-shovel operations. This paper is aimed at providing an overview of the development of the model and the statistical outcomes validating its applicability for experimental scenario runs and thus for better decision making purposes. A mixed integer linear goal programming (MILGP) optimization model is also presented in this paper that acts as an upper stage in a multi-stage dispatching system. The optimization model is proposed to be linked with the dispatching logic in the simulation for optimal shovel assignments and target productions by reading available mining faces directly from the short-term extraction schedule. This model is aimed at bridging the gap between operations and short term extraction schedule; and may help achieve better compliance between the two."

Efficient and re1iable methods of fragmentation through blasting have been sought ever since the introduction of black powder in mining operations, but the pace of investigation became faster with the discovery of nitroglycerine. The development of modern measuring instruments and the need to blast more rock with the least damage has made the study of blasting mechanics and its application more important, particularly since the oil embargo. Investigations into the practical approach evolved by Daws (1909) and the work done to make it more useful is discussed. The work of several investigators is touched upon with particular reference to the development of computer programs to simulate and optimize blasting operations.

The objective of this chapter is to provide data that will assist in the selection and sizing of equipment utilized in the filtration method of separating solids from liquids. It should be recognized at the outset that in some situations more than one option may be available to achieve the target desired. Important industrial minerals are separated and concentrated by froth flotation by industry today. The following descriptions are presented as an overview of the methods employed to separate and recover a few of these industrial minerals. The minerals described in this section of the book are not, by any means, the only important minerals treated by froth flotation. Other minerals, such as calcite, kaolin, wollastonite, rare earths and vermiculite were not included, primarily due to the confidential nature of the information held by the Minerals Research Laboratory and the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute. Flotation of nonmetallic minerals is sometimes viewed as alchemy. However, the art is, in reality, based on sound chemistry, experience and a little luck in the treatment of new ores. In the flotation of nonmetallic minerals, as opposed to base metal sulfides, highly specific treatment conditions are required to accomplish separations. TRANSMANCHE-LINK is responsible for designing, developing and implementing the project for a fixed link under the English Channel, comprising two running tunnels of diameter 7.6 metres and a service tunnel of diameter 4.8 metres. The three tunnels will all be 50 km long, with 37 km bored through chalk marl at a depth of 40 metres under the sea bed. The tunnels will be driven from both sides of the channel from intermediate addits above the coastline on either side with a 55 m access shaft at Sangatte in France and two "descenderies" or inclined tunnels addits and a shaft at Shakespeare Cliff on the English side. A total of eleven tunnel boring machines will drive the 150 km of tunnels. The major part of the tunnel linings will be built of precast reinforced concrete segments, and two plants have been specially built to produce the necessary 725,000 segments. Seven million cubic metres will be evacuated on wagons along the tunnels and then lifted by belt conveyor on the English side, and by hydraulic mucking from the bottom on the French side. Preliminary work started early in 1987 with manufacture of the first boring machines, construction of five precasting plants, boring of the Sangatte shaft in preparation of the Shakespeare Cliff entrances. 1. INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has often taken a leading role in introducing innovative construction technologies to build its transit system. Most recently, Contract Section E-5a, which included Fort Totten Station and Tunnels was constructed utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) in soft ground. Along with the station and tunnels, two permanent shafts were also constructed in soft ground employing the NATM technique. This project is located within the District of Columbia on the Greenbelt Route. The subject of this paper is to discuss the unique method of construction of these two shafts, and explore the benefits of applying the NATM technique to the construction of deep shafts. The design of the shafts was performed jointly by Jenny Engineering Corporation of Springfield, New Jersey, and Mayreder Consult of Linz, Austria. The designers also provided construction support services and a resident NATM expert at the site during construction. The construction of the project started in April 1988 by a joint venture of Mergentime Corporation and H. T. Construction, a subsidiary of Hochtief Company from Germany. This $48.7 million construction project has been completed. 2. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The two NATM shafts are located primarily in Cretaceous-age deposits that are over 100 million years old. Although the concept of centrifugal recovery has been around in one form or another for many years, it has not been until recent times that it has become clearly understood and properly put into perspective. Simplistic in theory, it is when one begins to examine the variables involved that the true complexities of this matter begin to emerge. In creating an enhanced g force concentrator, there are many aspects both positive and negative that are encountered. Many conditions that are inherent to all conventional 1 g concentrators do not apply to centrifugal concentrators and therefore very few cm factors exist between them. In developing this technology, virtually all principles were proven by method of trial and error. Among the topics discussed are the effect of g force enhancement on particulate behavior with respect to size and shape, density, enrichment, fluidization, and the "teeter principle". In addition, we will discuss the physical effects of g force enhancement with respect to manufacturing in the areas of abrasion, bearings, and vibration. In discussing the recovery parameters of centrifugal concentrators we will draw direct comparisons to various other recovery methods, outlining the conditions most favorable to their application.

This paper reviews the importance, technological developments and application limits of roadheaders based on the case histories, which are compiled in a database including different roadheaders in various geological conditions. More than 55 km of tunnels have been constructed by TBM in the last 12 years to refurbish and upgrade the high voltage cable network in London. These include a tunnel of 20km length using EPBM machines in both clay and granular soils. Route selection was made with reference to subsurface structures, existing ground conditions, using suitable shaft locations addressing environmental concerns. The complex interfaces to manage included obtaining of consents to the coordination of multiple suppliers. The paper describes how all these challenges have been met successfully and how technology has been employed to provide for safe construction and operation in the congested urban environment.

The mineral processing engineer must have some knowledge of mineral identification, and the greater his knowledge in this field, the greater will be his potential to do his own specialty well. Most metal-bearing ores and industrial minerals require processing of some kind to produce a salable product or a material suitable for further processing. The types of treatment are many, but each one is aimed at separating a mineral or family of minerals from others. Obviously, then, it is basic to all mineral processing to identify the minerals present in the raw material and in intermediate and final products resulting from processing. Very often the mineral processing engineer will enter planning while exploration of a mineral prospect is going on. He will examine hand specimens, drill cores and cuttings, bulk samples, and materials in place. He must identify the valuable minerals, their occurrence and associations with other minerals, and the identity of diluents or host rock. An exact and detailed knowledge of the raw material will usually suggest the treatment processes that should be investigated in the development of the most suitable scheme for that particular raw material in that particular location. Physical properties of a mineral often lead directly to a process for separating that mineral from others. Some well-known examples of these are: magnetic separations for such minerals as magnetite, rutile, ilmenite; gravity separations for gold, silver, galena. cassiterite; flotation separation for most sulfides; distillation of mercury from cinnabar; and selective dissolution in specific solvents such as halite or sylvite in water, gold and silver in cyanide solutions, copper oxides, carbonates, sulfates and silicates in dilute sulfuric acid. These processes and many others are described in detail elsewhere in the Hand¬book and so it is not appropriate to give details here, except to emphasize that processing is aided greatly by complete mineral identi¬fication. Developing a treatment scheme for a new mineral discovery is an exciting assignment fag the mineral processing engineer, but much more of the usual work relates to quality control in existing plants. Here too, mineral identification is important. Some processing is aimed toward producing an end product which will meet exacting specifica¬tions regarding purity or allowable diluents. All the major interfacial technologies encountered in mineral processing involve adsorption of surfactants and/or polymers. With the need for processing low grade complex ores it is imperative that conventional techniques such as flotation and flocculation be extended to meet the challenge of treatment of fines. Addition of surfactants or polymers is indeed not limited to the solid-solid separations but extends to particle size reduction in the form of grinding aids and dewatering operations as well. Although progress has been made in recent years to understand the science involved in various interfacial processes, more challenges and opportunities exist today than ever before in processing of the low grade finely disseminated ores. A brief review of the recent advances and the challenges in mineral processing, especially, those related to the interfacial technologies is presented.

The importance of a power economy that is efficient both in technological and economic terms has been clearly recognized in recent years. In 1977 the German Federal Government therefore introduced its Energy Research and Energy Technologies Program 1977-1980, which consolidates the government activities in the field of nuclear and non-nuclear energy research. The priority objectives of this program can be summarized as follows: safeguarding the medium- to long-term energy supply in the Federal Republic of Germany at reasonable overall macroeconomic cost, taking into account the requirements of environmental protection and the safety of the population. In the field of coal mining technologies, about 200 research projects are currently under way. A total of DM 1.7 billion is earmarked for research to be conducted in this area between 1977 and 1980.

There are similarities, and differences, in the surfactants used in cosmetics and detergents. In both applications anionic surfactants constitute the major category. Their main function is to clean, i.e. remove grease and particulate matter from fibrous or hard surface substrates. Cationic surfactants are used for conditioning substrates. Nonionic surfactants can function as a substrate cleanser but are seldom used as such in cosmetics; however, selected non-ionics are often employed as a primary emulsifier. Several specialized nonionic surfactants are used as a secondary surfactant in formulations to promote foaming and emulsification. Specific examples and modes of action of surfactants will be presented.

Scale formation is a problem that affects many mineral processing systems because the processes require the use of large volumes of water. Scale composition may vary from circuit to circuit, but the scale deposition mechanisms and needs for prevention are often somewhat similar. Likewise, there is a degree of commonality in the prediction, detection, and elimination of scaling conditions in various water systems. This paper briefly reviews some of the conditions which lead to scale formation, as well as some of the common problems associated with unchecked scale growth. The primary focus of the paper is on the variety of chemical scale inhibitors available for use in mineral processing circuits, and the actions of each type. The means of predicting and detecting scaling tendencies are also addressed, and include both direct and indirect methods, i-e., stability index determination and chemical analysis of deposits.

Gold mining has undergone a massive revival in Australia within the past decade. With very few exceptions, these operations are involved with the development of deposits which have been previously and partially worked by underground methods. In most cases, current operations have involved the open cut mining of near-surface remnants or low-grade hanging wall and footwall mineralisation. A growing number of mines are, however, progressing to the development of underground workings either as extensions of existing open cuts or as "stand alone" projects. These operations vary in scale from the Kalgoorlie operations of North Kalgurli Mines Limited and Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to the small scale "gouging" operations of individuals and partnerships. The individual production rates rarely exceed 200 000 tonnes per year, primarily because of the magnitude of reserves or the style of access available for rehabilitation. The narrow-vein mines were initially re-opened using the traditional methods, in particular shrinkage stoping and cut-and-fill stoping. As a result of experience gained in various ground conditions, certain variants have become popular. This paper investigates the fate of the traditional methods in Australian practice, and reviews some of the recently applied variants. This involves not only a perusal of current practices, but also an assessment of the influence of recent technological development on the economics of narrow-vein mining. Some consideration is also given to the effects of previously employed stoping techniques on efforts to access remnant blocks in the re-development of old mines.

Most mining applications of geostatistical simulation are to the simulation of quantitative variables, such as grade. In many instances the occurrence of quantitative variables and the values they take are controlled, at least partially, by qualitative, or categorical, variables. Examples include quartz-vein controlled gold orebodies and stratigraphic silver/lead/zinc deposits. In these cases a realistic simulation must include geological controls on the spatial distribution of the simulated quantitative variables. This paper describes extensions to, and algorithms for, the truncated plurigausian method of simulating categorical variables. The categorical variables are modelled as indicator random functions that represent the presence/absence of the variable at spatial locations. Stochastic images of the distributions are obtained by truncation of realisations of two Gaussian random functions simulated at the same locations. Parameters required are the thresholds for truncation of the Gaussian variables and the covariance structure of each Gaussian random function. These parameters are estimated from the experimental proportions of each variable and indicator direct and cross semi-variograms. A detailed case study is shown in order to illustrate the procedure, to discuss the results and to present the algorithms for plurigaussian simulation.

ABSTRACT Distinct patterns are identified in the associations, distributions, and levels of concentration of the silica minerals, boehmite, aluminous goethite, and phosphate minerals in the bauxite deposits of Jamaica. These result from syngenetic and diagenetic reactions associated with post-bauxitization tectonic and associated activities. Three basic types of bauxite are identified, viz., Jamaica-1 (< 3.0% boehmite), Jamaica-2 (> 3.0% boehmite and 30-80% of the iron as aluminous goethites), and Jamaica-3 (> 3.0% boehmite and > 90% of the iron as aluminous goethites). The Jamaica-1 type has a mean value of < 2% boehmite as A1203, while this level in the Jamaica-2 type is usually about 3.5%, and > 4% in the Jamaica-3 type. Similar discrete associations were found for the species and concentrations of aluminous goethite and phosphate minerals. The process and geological implications of these are discussed.

The definition of refractory gold ores and concentrates, including mineralogical characteristics, is reviewed. The chemistry of roasting and process conditions such as feed size, temperature, and time are discussed. A typical metallurgical program for developing a roasting process scheme is presented. The application of various types of furnaces for roasting is described. Requirements for scrubbing off-gases to meet environmental air emission regulations, and general information regarding engineering design parameters for roasting are presented. Roasting is sound technology for processing refractory ores and concentrates, but it is essential that the metallurgy of each ore or concentrate is well defined before commercialization. A fluid-bed roaster is the preferred type of furnace for roasting. Environmental regulations for air emissions must be carefully addressed.
