Until about three years ago, Asarco's copper business consisted predomi¬nantly of custom smelting of ores and concentrates produced by other mining companies. Since then, the company has been transforming itself into a fully integrated producer in copper mining, smelting, and refining. In doing this, Asarco has lowered its costs and restructured its operations and finances. Now, Asarco hopes to complete this process by spending $260 million over the next three years, to expand and modernize its copper facilities and boost production by some 40%. The capital spending program includes: • $130 million at the Ray mine about 113 km (70 miles) north of Tucson, AZ, to expand mining capacity and install an in-pit ore crusher, mill, and concentrator; • $100 million, to expand the mining capacity at the Mission Complex located south of Tucson, AZ, and refurbish the adjacent, idle Pima mill and concentrator. (Asarco had earlier exercised an option to purchase the Pima mill for about $6 million); and • $30 million, to modernize the copper smelter in El Paso, TX, with a new flash smelting process. The new program is in addition to a recently completed first-phase expansion of the Mission mine, mill, and concentrator. This $13 million debottlenecking of existing operations in¬creased production capacity by 46% or 24.5 kt/a (27,000 stpy), to 79 kt/a (87,000 stpy) of copper in concentrates. In addition, a previously an¬nounced $12 million expansion program at the Ray mine is scheduled for completion in early 1990. It will expand mill capacity, to offset the anticipated effects of increasing ore hardness as the pit deepens. Ray produces 68 kt/a (75,000 stpy) of copper in concen¬trates and an additional 36 kt/a (40,000 stpy) of electrowon copper. By 1992, when Asarco's expanded and modernized copper facilities are operating at capacity, the company's mine output will have increased by 67 kt/a (74,000 stpy), to 263 kt/a (290,000 stpy) of contained copper. That will be enough to provide all of the feed required for Asarco's two copper smelters - by then, both of them modern, state-of-the-art facilities. Asarco's expansion and modernization program will further reduce costs and provide added assurance that the company's copper business will be profitable at the bottom of the cycle, according to Chairman Richard de J. Osborne The Ray mine portion of the new program will include construction at the mine of a new mill and concentrator, with a capacity of 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) of ore. These new semiautogenous grinding mills and large capacity flotation cells will augment the present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) concentrator located 29 km (18 miles) away, in Hayden, AZ. A 29 km (18 mile) pipeline will be built to carry tailings in slurry form from the new Ray mill to the present tailings pond. Concentrates from the new facility will be shipped by rail to Asarco's Hayden copper smelter. Ray's present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) crusher, adjacent to the open-pit, will be replaced by a 54.4 kt/d (60,000 stpd), portable in-pit crusher and conveying system. This will reduce the more expensive ore haulage by truck. The Ray project is scheduled for completion by 1992. It will increase the mine's annual output of copper in concentrates by an additional 33.5 kt/a (37,000 st), to 102 kt (112,000 st). And the project could mean an additional 400 jobs at the 730 employee Ray operation. Work at the Mission Complex involves reactivation of the Pima mill and concentrator and expansion of mine output sufficient to provide ore to both the Pima mill and the present Mission mill. In 1985, Asarco purchased the Pima mine, which occupies one end of the Mission pit. A comparison is presented of coal pyrolysis at temp¬eratures ranging from 4090 to 497°C and thermal dissolution of coal in tetralin at temperatures ranging from 350° to 450,°C, both utilizing a Utah high-volatile bituminous coal. The initial coal pyrolysis reactions are second order with an enthalpy of activation of 35.6 kcal per mole. The fraction of total product yield produced under second order conditions ranges from 67% at 409°C to 96% at 497°C. The process then gradually deteriorates to a first order reaction in the later stages with enthalpy of activation of 4.1 kcal, per mole. The initial reactions of solution of coal in tetralin are second order with an enthalpy of activation of 28.8 kcal per mole. The fraction of total product produced under second order conditions ranges from 63% at 350°C' to 94% at 450°C. The dissolution process then gradually changes to first order in the later stages with enthalpy of activation of 15.6 kcal per mole. A model is presented which relates the two processes and explains, the significance of the above similarities.

The design, modelling and simulation of solid-liquid mixers remains one of the least advanced aspects of minerals processing, due to difficulties in quantifying complex slurry hydrodynamics from first principles, and in acquiring reliable experimental data for model verification and development. This contribution describes the application of electrical resistance tomography (ERT) for three dimensional imaging of the concentration of mineral particulates in a slurry mixer as a function of key process variables (particle size, impeller type, agitation speed). It is demonstrated how ERT can provide a wealth of detailed data to allow model development, which ultimately will lead to much improved design capabilities and the generation of mixing models which could reside within Particle Process Simulators. This principle is illustrated using descriptions of mixer behaviour based on an empirical approach, although the measurement methodology described is equally suited to development of computational fluid dynamics models, cellular models or design approaches based on artificial intelligence. The experimental data can be built into a visualisation data bank, which acts as a "process toolkit" by allowing a library of process responses to be catalogued. Hence these data can be accessed for the purposes of model development, equipment selection, optimisation of operating conditions or testing on-line control strategies.

Control of crushing and grinding circuits ideally requires continuous particle size measurements on both in- and outgoing streams. Until recently, size distributions could only be obtained by screening methods, which were neither cost effective, frequent enough, nor timely. Input streams are often composed of large fragments, making screening prohibitive. Optical image processing systems, such as the WipFrag System, have been developed to the point that they are an extremely valuable tool to characterize, control, and fine-tune the comminution process. Although accuracy is less than that of screening, measurements are precise enough to detect relatively small changes in size distributions.

In preplanning the reclamation of a pit or quarry the geology of the site is the name of the game! The planner must know the parameters of the deposit, the quantity and kind of earth materials to be removed, and the amount and nature of the materials to be left behind or wasted as the result of processing the marketable product. With many states and most local jurisdictions requiring reclamation plans prior to the issuance of mining permits, the need for accurate and complete data concerning the geology of the site becomes increasingly important. The producer need only know that marketable materials are available in sufficient quantity to make the mining operation economically feasible-the planner, in order that the land may be reshaped for a useful purpose, must have reasonably precise information as to the dimensions and configurations of the pit or quarry following extraction and the amount and type of materials available on the site (or in some cases offsite as well). Therefore the geology of the site is of major significance in determining the land forms and use capabilities of the property upon completion of the mining process.

Industries in general, and mining in particular, have become safer than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction, as required, through job redesign, work procedures and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control must be practiced in a manner consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, which include the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to: • present a set of analytical tools to analyze injury experience data. • apply these tools on a case study example, • discuss the results of the case study, and • identify the application limitations and the future research needs.

The Northeast Raw Water Tunnel transports untreated water to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department's (DWSD) Northeast Water Plant where it is treated and distributed. The occurrence of a subsidence area which was attributed to the tunnel prompted the DWSD to have the tunnel investigated. After an extensive historical and geotechnical investigation, two access shafts were constructed along the alignment in the vicinity of the subsidence. Following completion of the shafts, the subsidence area was inspected in the wet prior to dewatering the tunnel. Upon the completion of dewatering, a dry inspection was performed. During the dry inspection, an area of significant distress was encountered where sand and silt were boiling into the tunnel along with large volumes of groundwater. This distressed area was located 800m (1/2 mile) north of the original subsidence area. The tunnel was immediately refilled with water and an emergency repair program was planned and implemented. As a result of the distressed nature of the secondary tunnel liner, dewatering of the tunnel could not be performed until the secondary liner and the surrounding soils were stabilized. This paper presents a case history of both the investigation and the repairs of the Northeast Raw Water Tunnel including the various grouting and unique tunnel stabilization methodologies which were utilized.

Belt feeders are commonly used to meter the flow of bulk solids from bins and hoppers. If the interface between the hopper outlet and belt feeder is not designed correctly, flow from the bin may be severely compromised, resulting in problems of no-flow, segregation, flooding, etc. By knowing the flow characteristics of the bulk solid being handled and applying proven design techniques, such problems can be avoided. Relevant bulk solids flow characteristics are identified, along with measurement techniques. Design procedures for correcting problems with existing feeders as well as proper design of new feeders are presented, along with case histories of successful application of these procedures.

Increased clearance was required in two railroad tunnels that were built about the time of the Civil War. Clearance infringements, whether they be excavation tights or caused by ice accumulation, reduce tunnel serviceability. Achieving increased clearance often means disturbing the ground and old ground support structures. Access and transportation needs dictate how and when the work can be carried out, and strongly influence the design approach and the methods used by the contractor to execute the work. This paper explores the pertinent considerations of the owner, the designer, the field inspection team, and the contractor in bringing this project to a successful conclusion.

Basement rocks in southern Oklahoma are divided into two groups. One group is the Lower Cambrian Wichita Igneous Province, a diverse igneous suite that crops out in the western Arbuckle Mountains and in the Wichita Mountains. These largely bimodal igneous rocks were emplaced in an intracratonic-rift environment. The other group, the older, is a set of Precambrian rocks of the Eastern Arbuckle Province, yielding ages between 1,350 and 1,400 Ma, exposed in the core of the eastern Arbuckle Mountains. These are deeply eroded mesozonal granitic rocks and associated granitic gneisses cut by numerous dikes ranging in composition from diabase to rhyolite. The southern Oklahoma igneous rocks have long been utilized mostly as dimension and crushed stone. Most of the early quarries were in granite of various red hues for monuments and facing stones. Large crushed-stone quarries are now exploiting both granite and rhyolite, which is used chiefly as aggregate and railroad ballast. The exposed basement rocks in Oklahoma represent an underdeveloped and accessible resource.

The effect of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, realgar and arsenopyrite on gold dissolution in cyanide media was investigated. The cyanidation of synthetic gold ores in the presence of various concentrations of sulfides was studied under constant experimental conditions. A mineralogical analysis of the minerals was performed. The leaching kinetics were determined. The negative effect of sulfides on the gold dissolution rate varies with the sulfide mineral and decreases according to the following order: realgar > pyrrhotite > chalcopyrite > pyrite > arsenopyrite. The chemical characterization of gold and sulfide minerals surfaces using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was undertaken to identify the mechanisms involved. XPS analysis showed that a passivation layer of sulfides, arsenic or iron compounds might form on the gold surface as a result of the dissolution of the sulfide minerals. An integral part of site investigations for shafts and underground workings should be hydrogeologic evaluations of the need for and method of ground-water control. Such investigations should include: 1. Classification of the problem by aquifer type. 2. Integration of other site investigations with hydrogeologic programs, including assessment of the need for water control. 3. Planning and conduct of aquifer tests tailored to the aquifer situation. 4. Evaluation of pumping requirements to achieve water control objectives. 5. Scheduling of dewatering for optimum results and costs. 6. Evaluation of environmental impacts of pumpage and water discharge. 7. Planning of operational monitoring for program modification and liability limitation. Early hydrogeologic involvement can result in avoiding unnecessary duplication in site investigations.

Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. Anorthosite is an abundant, domestic source of alumina with reserves in individual deposits ranging from a few billion to hundreds of billions of tons. While anorthosite contains less alumina than does kaolinite, its CaO and Na20 contents are significantly higher (Figure 1). Alumina can be produced from anorthosite by alkaline, soda-lime sinter or acid processes. CaO and Na20 are advantageous because they are reactants consumed in alkaline processes. Acid processes require high calcium plagioclase feldspars (bytownite-anorthite) to obtain high alumina extraction because the lower calcium plagioclase feldspars (andesine-labradorite) are not as readily dissolved during digestion. The layered Raggedy Mountain Gabbro group in the Wichita complex in southwest Oklahoma is a high calcium anorthosite that could be processed by acid, sinter, or alkaline methods. Chemical grade limestone in the Arbuckle Group is located within 45 km of the anorthosite (Figure 2).

Surfactant-based bactericides are able to control acid formation in sulfidic materials such as pyrite and sulfidic ores, thereby helping to abate acid rock drainage. Bactericides are used in the following two ways: as periodic or continuous spray treatments for the prevention of acidification of material actively handled and moved and in controlled-release form for reclamation. Site-specific bactericide treatments are designed for active sites and reclamation. Results from two active coal refuse sites show that acid production can be reduced by 88% or more. Results from reclaimed sites show that bactericide treatment can be more effective than the addition of alkaline materials such as limestone and can reduce acid production from 3,500 to <30 ppm. The controlled-release-pellets treatment outlasts the life of the pellets, as shown by a study of a site now 10 years old A single treatment sets up a change in site microbiology to replace acid-producing Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria with heterotrophic bacteria and creates a stable site without the need for further treatments. A secondary beneficial effect of bactericides is on revegetation, and biomass from treated areas is almost 10 times that from areas not treated with bactericide. Depending on the application, bactericide treatment can be cost effective upfront and certainly long-term, compared to the perpetual water treatment that could be required, even after productive use of the site is completed

The manipulators possibly used in underground mining must deal with unpredictable obstacle while keeping certain positions and orientations of end effector, and in some cases, are required to possess redundant joints in order to be more flexible. This kind of manipulators might be fitted with jumbo drill or platform as auxiliary to potentially deal with some utility works in versatile way, such as installing rock bolts, guniting, blasting, charging, surveys and measuring work, etc.. This paper describes numerical procedures of performing inverse kinematic problems for redundant manipulators .The procedures, based on the generalized pseudoinverse of Jacobian matrix, are developed to lead to kinematic solution at both singularity and ill conditioning, and to guarantee continuous sequence of positions of the end effect or. Furthermore, the solution to optimization and obstacle avoidance is investigated. A numerical example is shown to illustrate the approach.

The paper begins by describing an underhand cut-and-fill mining concept for a 50m thick, generally tabular though irregularly shaped orebody dipping at 30 degrees and occurring at a depth of between 2300 and 2700m in the Sudbury Basin. From this, the broad design requirements of a fill system are stated. Two and three-dimensional numerical models are then described which were built to evaluate the theoretical benefits of different types of fill reinforcement. Included in this evaluation are the effects of span, fill strength, fill tightness, as well as static and dynamic loading types. Results, supported by large-scale physical models, are presented to show the significance of reinforcement on stable, undermined fill performance. Finally the paper describes work which has been done to evaluate the suitability of so-called silicated cemented backfill. This system is, in principal, attractive for deep mining applications since transportation is in the "safe" hydraulic regime, while fill water run-off, segregation and shrinkage effects are potentially eliminated in the stopes. The results from various surface and underground trial pours are reported which substantiate the proposed use of this type of backfill at depth.

A series of batch flotation tests was performed on chalcopyrite-quartzite, on pyrrhotite-quartzite and on chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-quartzite mixtures. Pulp potential measurements in the flotation tests with single sulfide minerals indicated that each sulfide mineral had its own optimal potential range for flotation. When these results were used to select the potential ranges for the separation of the two minerals from their mixture, their flotation responses changed, and the selectivity of separation was adversely affected. A possible mechanism involving surface alteration through galvanic interaction is discussed, and a method to improve the selectivity of flotation separation is proposed.

The paper describes studies made at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, UK, of the mechanical cutting characteristics using disc cutters, of rocks with compressive strengths up to 340 MPa. These studies have been performed in both the single pass mode, where interactive breakout occurs between adjacent grooves on every pass of the tool, and the multiple pass mode, where several passes may be required to cause breakout. In addition, experiments to determine the effect on cutting performance of the hydraulic stiffness of tunnelling machines are described. The results of these tests are analysed and discussed in the context of the design of full-face tunnelling machines.

Geologists, employed by the Australian Company, Metals Exploration Limited, discovered nickel laterite enrichment at Greenvale in 1967. A joint venture was arranged with the Freeport Minerals Company who had gained early experience with nickel laterite ores when building and operating the Nicaro and Moa Bay Treatment Plants in Cuba. A 5 tonne/day Pilot Plant at the Freeport research facilities at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, verified the amenability of the ore to treatment by the reduction and ammonia-ammonium carbonate leaching process used at Nicaro. A 5 800 tonne/day Treatment Plant was constructed on the coast at Yabulu, North Queensland. This paper describes the ore body, the mining operation and the stages of treatment required to produce nickel oxide products and a mixed nickel/cobalt sulphide product at Yabulu.
