This paper describes the design, construction and commissioning testing program for a laboratory facility at the School of Mining Engineering, UNSW, Australia, aimed at evaluating reinforcement tendon performance when subjected to shear loading. The project has been financially supported through the coal industry ACARP research initiative. The single failure plane design adopted in the test rig has been successful in allowing shear loading to be directly applied to fully installed (and where relevant, pre-tensioned) rock bolts. Initial results are extremely encouraging, and illustrate a significant axial component of load development as shearing takes place - particular in lower strength, softer material types. The paper also outlines future plans for use of this facility.

A numerical investigation is made into unstable failures of coal pillars (i.e. coal bumps) using the finite difference software FLAC3D. A static energy balance is first derived to calculate the excess energy released as a consequence of unstable failure in rock. Two- and three-dimensional mining layouts are then assessed on their bump-potential based on the magnitudes of excess energy released during simulated pillar failures. A three dimensional pillar model is developed to represent tributary area loading of an infinite room-and-pillar layout. Pillar strength and brittleness characteristics are calibrated using a Mohr-Coulomb strain-softening constitutive law to simulate width-to-height ratio coal pillars ranging from 1:1 to 5:1. Width-to-height ratio pillars 1:1 to 3:1 release large magnitudes of excess energy as the pillars fail, representing massive collapse of room-and-pillar layouts. The larger pillars maintain their residual strength during failure; however significant excess energy is still released during temporary reductions in pillar strength. A two-dimensional model is then constructed of a gate road pillar failing due to elastic rebound of the surrounding rock mass. Soft loading conditions initiate unstable failure for all pillar widths, while the total magnitudes of excess energy increase with the size of pillar being modeled. The results from these tests indicate that excess energy may be used as a direct assessment of the bump potential of simulated mine layouts.

The range of interburden thickness between coal seams in Datong Mining District of China is large. From mining operation point of view, the closer is between the two seams, the greater is the impact from the upper seam when the lower seam is mined. This impact is most notable when the two seams are ultra-close. In this paper the definition of ultra-close seams and its practical method of determination are presented. Based on the difference in strata thickness in the interburden and the concept of "yield depth ratio" which is defined as the yield zone depth in the interburden to the total thickness of interburden, the roofs of the ultra-close multiple seams in the Datong District of China were divided into 3 types: (1) false roof or rock partings in coal seam. This type of roof does not require special handling except mining them simultaneously as one single seam. The roof thickness is slightly less than 0.5 m; (2) completely broken roof. In this type of roof, the yield depth ratio is larger than (or equal to) 1. When the roof thickness is larger than 0.5 m but less than 2.0 m, the yield depth ratio must be smaller than 1; and (3) fractured roof. In this type of roof, the yield depth ratio is less than 1 while the roof thickness is larger than 2.0 m. In retreat longwall mining, if the gateroads of the lower seam are located under the gob of upper seam, roof bolting can be used in the 3rd type of roof. But if the 2nd type roof exists, powered supports must be used.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Spokane Research Laboratory installed Split-Set rock bolts instrumented with strain gauges to document the mechanical load response of the bolts in weak ground. Short-term monitoring of the bolts immediately after installation showed that some of the gauges went into tension. It was felt that the force exerted on the bolts to drive them into the hole should have caused the gauges to show compression. The tension probably resulted from the holes having crooked sections. Long-term monitoring over the course of a year also showed that the bolts were bending at some locations and that loads as high as 98 kN (22,000 Ib) were recorded along sections of the bolts. Load cells were placed on the head end of the bolts to determine head loads. Head loads up to 14.7 kN (3,300 Ib) were generated during bolt installation. In addition, closure readings were taken across the drift to determine the convergence rate responsible for bolt loading. A Rock Mass Rating (RMR) was calculated at the site to compare with bolt response. The bolts were installed as part of the rebolting process in an area being repaired because the near-vertical beds in the walls were buckling and causing the wall to fail. The instrumented Split-Set rock bolts will provide data that will lead to greater understanding of the behavior of the rocklbolt support mechanism. It may also be possible to explain the overall performance of the bolts in situ in terms of their design effectiveness. This work showed that load at the head of a Split-Set rock bolt was less than load along the interior of the bolt.
