Oxygen steelmaking (OSM) is not only the dominant steelmaking process but defines the structure of the industry. There are a number of myths regarding the future of OSM, which are false. These myths include that the EAF will become the dominant process in the near future, it is less costly to produce steel in an EAF and OSM is a mature technology and no new developments are occurring. These myths are shown to be false. Selected new developments are discussed such as post combustion, recycling of waste oxides, slag splashing and sensors.

It is now five years since the advent of gold-dredging in Australia, the State of New South 'Wales, or colony as it was, being the first to adopt this system of gold-getting, and the credit of its introduction rests with a member of this Institute, Mr. Chas. L. Garland, who commenced operations with his dredge on the Macquarie River, at the junction of the Muckerawa Creek, in the month of March, 1899. In this paper it is intended to give a brief history of the career of the gold dredge in New South Wales from that relate up to the present time, during which period the writer, as a designer of many dredges, has been constantly in touch with the subject in all its phases in this State; the points noted are the outcome of his observation in a general way, and to a great extent are apart from the design proper.Gold-dredging in New South Wales up to the present moment can hardly be designated an unqualified success...

This paper summarizes the development of a furnace for producing titanium castings. The general problem is outlined and chronological details are given on the construction and operation of four different casting furnaces, all utilizing consumable-electrode arc heating and water-cooled copper crucibles. Of the two methods of pouring, the tilt-pour technique has been more satisfactory than bottom tapping. Mold design, electrode fabrication, and deep-pool production are discussed. INTRODUCTION In the early summer of 1953 the Bureau of Mines was contacted by the Department of the Army through Watertown Arsenal to explore the possibility of conducting research on casting titanium metal. The objective of the program was "to develop a technique for producing formed castings of titanium metal not less than 40 pounds in weight and without introduction of deleterious contamination."

In today's evolving and globalized world, mining companies are being pressured to move beyond compliance towards long-term sustainability and sustainable development. Companies are expected to "engage" with communities and measure the success of these engagements without a clear understanding of "how" to do this. This move, away from "Corporate" Social Responsibility (CSR) and compliance, develops more of a focus on "Community" Social Responsibility and sustainability. This shift in focus leads to the development of world-class projects that provide sustainable development for people, reduces the incidence of costly delays, and promotes good global citizenship for corporations. The process of "engaging" communities in mining project design and development leads to a stronger license to operate and sustainable development. To create this mutually beneficial relationship between communities and companies, communities must be "engaged" in the mining process as early as possible, preferably during the exploration or the concept phases. How to create this "engagement" remains elusive. How to measure the progress of this engagement is also problematic. The quantitative and qualitative metrics needed to measure both positive and negative impacts of the mining and community relationship will be discussed.

Dissolution of chalcopyrite with acidified ferric sulfate produces a sulfur layer on the unreacted chalcopyrite surface that interferes with further dissolution. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a process to improve the leaching kinetics of these types of diffusion-controlled systems. The system features the Bureau-developed turbomill, an attrition grinder that scrubs the reaction product coating away from the unreacted mineral grains during leaching. The system can be operated continuously at any temperature up to the boiling point of the leaching agent. This method is a hydrometallurgical alternative to chalcopyrite smelter technology and eliminates sulfur dioxide emission problems with its associated costs. Batch testing at 900 C with the chalcopyrite-ferric sulfate system resulted in copper extraction exceeding 99 pct. At an optimal energy consumption of 1,520 kW· hjst, 95 pct of the copper was extracted. The pregnant liquor was clarified and tested for typical solvent-extraction recovery of the copper. Two-stage extraction and two-stage stripping recovered 96 pct of the copper in an electrolyte suitable for copper electrowinning.

Both climate and methane control have been a prime concern in the development of the workings within the Deep Soft seam at Harworth Colliery. This paper describes the numerous methods employed over the past 15 years to effect control over these two major environmental pollutants at Harworth and describes a future method of working which will enable the output levels required to be achieved, whilst effecting the required level of both climatic and methane control. Firstly, the paper gives a broad historical overview of the steps taken since 1981, when production started in the Deep Soft seam at Harworth Colliery, to effect control over the main environmental pollutants in the seam. Secondly, the paper details the results of planning exercises undertaken to assess the various options with respect to panel layout, to achieve environmental control in future production districts. Finally, the recommended method of panel design to achieve the levels of production required is detailed.

BITUMINOUS COAL production for 1937 up to Nov. 27, was 400,000,000 ions, an increase of 3.43 per cent over the comparative period in 1936. The in- crease in consumption, however, was not so great as the increase in production. Stocks of coal, mostly in the hands of consumers, on Nov. 1 were 57,000,000 tons, compared to 44,400,000 tons at the same periods in 1936. The prospects were that both production and consumption for December, 1937, would be lower than for the corresponding month of 1936. , Anthracite production for the period ending Nov. 20 was 43,900,000 tons, com- pared to 48,500,000 tons for the corresponding period in 1936, or a decrease of 9.5 per cent. The importance of crushers in the mining industry declined with the introduction and resultant dominance of AG and SAG based circuits, but the recent move to consider more energy efficient circuits has caused the industry to re-consider the role of crushers.Different types of comminution equipment have different efficiency in the way the energy is applied in the size reduction process. Because of the general trend towards more sustainable production processes and emission of carbon dioxide, energy use has become more important. To fully understand how crushers can contribute to optimising the energy application in comminution circuits, detailed models of process performance are required. Such models need to take into account the mechanical design factors and how the crusher performance changes in response to feed conditions, the control strategy utilised and the wear of the crusher liners.It is also critical to analyse the total circuit, not just the individual crushers. To fully understand the performance of the entire circuit, dynamic simulation should be applied. Without the holistic understanding of the total circuit and the incorporation of transient effects, the full circuit performance cannot be adequately determined and the true energy picture will not be quantified.Based on detailed mechanistic modelling of crushers by the authors and the application of dynamic simulation, the opportunities to optimise the use of crushers for energy efficiency are examined.

Reduction in the recovery time required and improvements in safety during a longwall face move have compelled coal mine operators to examine and use pre-driven longwall recovery rooms. The recovery entry is developed at the longwall stop position and supported ahead of time so that the required combinations of standing and internal supports can be installed before the longwall face approaches. A calibrated three-dimensional finite element model, developed in conjunction with an underground test area, provided the critical components and design principals for a comprehensive parametric study. The study indicates that vertical, horizontal, and shear stresses concentrated on the outby abutment pillar corner of the recovery room resulting in deformations in the immediate roof above the primary roof support anchorage level. The results of the numerical model and field site observations indicated that the combination of the internal bolting system and the standing concrete supports are critical for the successful and safe extraction of the longwall equipment. Cable supports installed at and angle over the pillars can help stabilize the disturbed zone above the adjacent fender and outby pillars, however; standing supports are required in most sedimentary roof conditions to increase stability and assure a safe longwall extraction.

Urban development to the south of Sydney is approaching areas of current and proposed coal mining. Already some structures and residential areas are affected by mining subsidence.Subsidence resulting from either conventional pillar extraction methods or longwall mining has been monitored for 15 years to enable the characteristics of the surface deformation to be determined.The vertical and horizontal displacements of survey stations on the surface are monitored and the results arc used to calculate subsidence, changes in slope of the surface, curvatures along the subsidence profile, and the ensile and compressive strains. These features are in turn related to the underground extraction to give a description of surface subsidence and the development of subsidence with time.Subsidence investigations have been carried out over all or part of the workings of six collieries in the Southern Coalfield.Two case histories illustrate the procedure in the investigation of subsidence phenomena. The first example is the study of the subsidence over a series of longwall panels in one seam and the second is a study of subsidence over pillar extraction in two seams one above the other. From the results of the investigations the effects of panel widths on subsidence are determined.This and other information assists mine planning in areas where surface movement and deformation are important considerations.

A homely simile will serve to epitomise an interpretation of the rock structures and associated phenomena of the block of country under review, as it appears to the writer.Disregarding the many thousands of feet of overburden that have been eroded away during the ages, the present denuded surface and rock systems below may be pictured as a slab of some titanie ribbon cake that has suffered much damage from rough handling and exposure, yet retaining much of the original symmetry of its superimposed layers of variegated colour and texture.Lateral pressure has crumpled the cake into a series of irregular corrugations and, in parts, has caused some of the layers to crush and slide over their neighbours.Following upon this squeeze, the cake has been severed into segments and rhomboidal slabs by vertical cuts, and these portions have been severely jostled one against its neighbour, crushing the faces of contact and dragging the contiguous layers in the direction of movement.The variegated icing of the cake is represented by intercalated sills of amphibolite, pegmatite, and aplite, and the body of the cake by highly altered sedimentary rocks.The icing has been assailed by the rats of erosion with such effect that only residuals of the original structures remain. The body of the cake has suffered successive waves of igneous invasion in the order of lode pegmatite, followed by zine, iron,copper, and finally by silver-lead. These successive invaders found difficult access, along certain of the vertical cuts, to the more succulent layers of the cake, where, gorging to repletion, many were imprisoned and entombed for the future service of mankind.

Over the next several years, the storage capacity of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago?s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan will be increased by 14.8 billion gallons through the addition of two large off-line reservoirs: the McCook and Thornton Reservoirs. The Thornton Reservoir will be constructed at the terminus of Calumet TARP System. The constructed TARP system will be connected to the Thornton Reservoir via connecting tunnels and gates systems. The connecting tunnels will comprise of: an upgradient transition tunnel, steel lined bifurcated tunnel for conveyance and control of flow, downdradient transition tunnel, and energy diffuser at tunnel portal. A large, approximately 250-foot-long, 69-foot-wide, and 40-foot-high, rock cavern will be excavated at an average depth of 320 feet to house the bifurcated tunnel system and associated six large control gates, each 12.5-ft by 28-ft wheel gate. Presented in this article are discussions about the TARP system, the Connecting Tunnels and gates Project, regional rock conditions, evaluation of reservoir?s wall stability for evaluation of tunnel penetration, and design challenges facing during design of the: rock cavern hosting the bifurcated tunnel system and gates and associated tunnels and shaft.

A new steelmaking process, in which manganese ore was intentionally reduced, was developed to achieve a higher manganese Yield using a combined blowing converter. In this study, manganese behavior was discussed through the introduction of a model. Apparent reduction rates of manganese were calculated by the two terms that were determined experimentally, with SOkg and 2S0ton combined blowing converters. The model calculated manganese changes during the operation. We applied the model to the actual operation and found that manganese behavior was predicted fairly well by this model.

A new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus is presented and described. Results of measurements on Berea sandstone, Solehofen limestone, Bandera sandstone and Bakelite are presented. The measurements were made in a two-hour period at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Results show that the thermoelectric heat pump and tbermistor-controlled electric heater can be used in a steady-state apparatus for measuring thermal conductivity of mck. Steady-state is reached within two hours. With Urethane foam insulation, not more than 3 per cent of heat is lost by radial flaw. The apparatus can be used as a comparator or for absolute thermal conductivity determinations. INTRODUCTION Calculations of heat flow through the earth, both for scientific purposes and engineering design, require thermal-conductivity data on rock. However, the high variability of rock often makes handbook thermal-conductivity data of little value. For engineering purposes in particular, it is desirable to have measured data on samples of the rock mass under study. Laboratory methods for measuring thermal conductivity of rock use either time-dependent1-3 or steady - state temperatures .4,5 The time -dependent (transient) techniques give thermal diffusivity from which thermal conductivity can be calculated if the specific heat and density of the sample is known. Most transient techniques require lengthy and involved sample preparation. Also, the accuracy tends to be low. Steady-state techniques are more exact and are the most commonly used. The steady-state methods, however, also have their difficulties. A long time is often required to reach steady state, troubles have been encountered in establishing good thermal contact between the heating and cooling elements and the rock sample, and unaccounted-for heat losses are difficult to prevent. In this paper we present a description of a new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus. With it, measurements have been made in two hours at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Sample preparation is simple and no thermal conductivity standard is needed.6 APPARATUS Our steady-state apparatus is an improvement . over the conduction pile used by Zierfuss and van der vliet4 and Somerton.5 A linear heat flux is established through a conduction pile consisting of the rock sample and a standard material of known thermal conductivity in series. Subsidence due to coal mining is poorly understood by non-specialists. This has led to numerous misconceptions and myths based on limited observations and lack of knowledge. The three most common are: 1. Mine maps are inaccurate. 2. Deep mines are not a problem. 3. If no subsidence has occurred for many years after mining, there is no risk of future subsidence. Maps are important during mining and most are carefully prepared. Future use to evaluate conditions at mine level often includes drilling to confirm what the map shows. Usually, little or no effort is made to tie the surface survey of the property to the mine survey, to conduct a well designed drilling program to confirm the mine map, or to drill test borings vertically. When a mine entry is encountered rather than a coal pillar, or vice versa, and conditions at mine level appear different than anticipated, the first reaction is the mine map is inaccurate. The idea of a safe depth from subsidence is often based on the false premise that mining results in sufficient breakup of the overlying rock strata that bulking compensates for the coal extracted. The safe depth idea first appeared in the literature about 1880 and remained prevalent well into this century. Sadly, it is still encountered. The modern understanding of fragmentation of the immediate mine roof with the overlying beds sagging down on the broken roof rock was first described in 1900. With full extraction mining, either longwall or retreat room and pillar, surface subsidence occurs regardless of the depth of the mine. Subsidence over longwall mines at depths of 2000 feet can be 90 percent of the mined seam thickness. Numerous studies of undermined sites conclude that mining occurred many years ago and since no subsidence has occurred, there is no risk of future movement. This is true if sufficient coal pillars have been left to support the overlying strata. However, every year subsidence occurs over mines that have been closed for 100 years or more. In a study of subsidence incidents over the Pittsburgh Coal, the senior authors found that 50 percent of the incidents occurred above mines that had been closed for at least 50 years and 10 percent over mines closed for at least 80 years.

The demand for nickel is continuing to exceed inventories, and producers are working vigorously to increase capacity. Many nickel processes utilize the fluidized bed technology for its fast heat and mass transfer, excellent temperature control and low maintenance. The following four nickel applications of the fluidized bed technology have been commercialized: I) Sulfide ore roasting; II) Nickel sulfide (matte) roasting; III) Nickel oxide reduction; IV) Nickel chloride pyrohydrolysis. This paper examines the issues surrounding the application of fluidization technology to the above processes, from the stand point of the engineer modeling the process and designing the key equipment, based on the historical success stories and the fundamental principles of flow sheet synthesis. Using the available data in open literature, typical flow diagrams (with convenient bases of 1 t/h feed or product) are developed to illustrate the relative flow rates and to highlight the key features of each application. In addition, some historical background information is provided for each process with supplemental notes with regards to our company's involvements.

AS every school boy knows, the Andes mountain range forms the backbone of South America, extending the full length of the continent along its western edge and fairly close to the Pacific coast. But in Colombia these mountains are divided into three distinct ranges known as the Western, Central and Eastern ranges of the Andes. United at the southern end, they spread out like three fingers in a northerly direction across the Republic of Colombia. These great natural barriers have only in recent years been tarried by railroads or wagon roads, and they have had their effect upon the history of the country, both political and ethnological. A cave-to-mill study being conducted at the New Afton block caving operation demonstrated the potential for sensor-based ore sorting equipment to reject waste and improve the grade of feed to the mill. The lack of selectivity and potential for dilution entry associated with the block cave mining method results in many caving operations having to mine and process material that is below cut-off grade at certain stages of production. Online monitoring and bulk sorting systems have the potential to alleviate this problem and improve the productivity of caving operations while reducing energy and water requirements for each tonne of concentrate produced.As part of the cave-to-mill study, the suitability of a range of sensors, such as X-ray fluorescence and induction-type sensors, to sort mine production at the New Afton mine was investigated. Results showed that the discrimination of ore and waste can potentially be carried out by implementing surficial sensors into the material handling system. The study also showed that a combination of sensor outputs could be used to identify a certain ore type so that pre-emptive changes can be made in the mill to improve beneficiation performance. "I THANK YOU for the invitation which The Mining Society of Nova Scotia extended, originally to Gordon Berry, manager 'of our Point Tupper Refinery, to join you at this meeting and discuss refining and petrochemicals in their relation to this region. There are natural advantages in Nova Scotia which have made possible, and will continue to make possible, sizeable developments both in petroleum refining and in chemicals. Equally, however, as is the case everywhere, there are certain constraints. For clarity in this presentation, I will state some of these constraints right at the beginning. First, of any future developments from now on, only a small proportion of the products can be expected to go into local markets. I can make the point best with a few figures. Petroleum companies all have market forecasts. None ever work out to be perfect, but the trends are relatively predictable and the orders of magnitude are certainly correct. Pound Road Quarry is an alluvial gravel quarry owned and operated by Fulton Hogan Ltd. for the supply of aggregate in Canterbury, and is the largest quarry in the South Island in terms of production. It has evolved from three separate quarries, as a result of which extraction has occurred sporadically in a number of areas. Due to this factor, and the need to manage environmental impacts, a detailed quarry management plan was completed in 1995 which formed the basis for implementation of a certified environmental management system.   In December 1997, the quarry was the first in New Zealand to achieve ISO 14001 (TELARC) accreditation for implementation of an environmental management system. The main potential environmental impacts arising from the quarry operation include dust, noise and groundwater contamination, and visual landscape effects associated with gravel extraction, the mitigation of which is achieved by means of æbest practiceÆ methods. All quarry operations are controlled in terms of the environmental management system by means of regular (monthly and yearly) environmental reviews, appropriate auditing of environmental documents, and monitoring of environmental targets in accordance with consent and statutory requirements.
