Following an underground coal mine explosion, it is important that ventilation is quickly restored to ventilate the mine and affect a mine rescue. To achieve this, surface ventilation fans must be suitably protected from explosion damage, but still able to be quickly restored.A review of all Australian coal mine regulations was carried out, revealing that Australia has no prescriptive regulations that specify the design of explosion relief panels and the protection of ventilation fans in the event of an underground explosion.To better define the level of protection required, this paper reviews and extracts details from relevant major international regulations and standards on the subject.A suitable design methodology for the protection of ventilation fans is presented that could be applied in Australia, using a combination of explosion relief panels, appropriate isolation of the fan, and ventilation shaft/mine design.CITATION:Rafferty, T and Bourcier, R, 2013. When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and a manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced in situ by oxidation of pyrite. In the absence of added acid, the optimum conditions are: a molecularratio of Mn02/FeS2 of about 1·0, a temperature of about 1400 C., and an oxygen pressure between 25 and 90 lb./sq. in. Under these conditions, complete extraction of manganese is obtained in six hours leaching. An addition of sulphuric acid enables an Mn02/FeS2 ratio of 2·0 to be used successfully.Manganous sulphate decreases in solubility with increase in temperature above 1000 C., but even when the solubility limit is reached during leaching, reaction to form MnS04 still proceeds, and on cooling the MnS04 redissolves.INTRODUCTIONMany manganese deposits contain secondary manganese oxide minerals which are difficult to concentrate. Considerable attention has therefore been given to their hydrometallurgical treatment. In most manganese oxide minerals, the manganese is quadrivalent and must be reduced to the divalent state for dissolution. Reduction and dissolution can be accomplished in a number of ways, one method being to use aqueous ferrous sulphate solutions.A possible source of ferrous sulphate is pyrite as it is known that ferrous ion is an intermediate product in the aqueous oxidation of pyrite. It was therefore thought possible, that by heating an aqueous suspension of manganese oxide and pyrite with oxygen, the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid formed from pyrite would provide the necessary leaching reagents for manganese in situ. The Waimumu area, 12 km southwest of Gore, is underlain by the Gore Lignite Measures, an early Tertiary fluvial sequence approximately 500 m thick resting on Triassic-Jurassic argillitic basement. The Waimumu Quartz Gravels (Pliocene) have been deposited locally and are in part due to the localised reworking of the Gore Lignite Measures. Structurally the area is dominated by the Dunsdale Fault System, a steeply dipping series of NE trending reverse faults (Isaac and Lindqvist, 1990). The Belle-Brook, Hedgehope and Parker Road sites sampled are adjacent to the downthrown (east) side of the Hedgehope Fault.The authigenic gold-sulphide association at Belle-Brook was discovered in 1987 (Falconer, 1987: Clough and Craw, 1989). Despite a very limited amount of alluvial mining a significant quantity of authigenic marcasite has developed. Authigenic sulphide trace element analysis has shown anomalous amounts of As, Ni, Cr and to a lesser extent Zn, Pb and eu (Table 1). It has been established that the nickel occurs as a colloform banded Ni sulphide, possibly bravoite, within the marcasite (Figures 1 & 2). Arsenic and nickel (re)mobilisation are well documented in the literature. Generally As and heavy metals are mobilised in the groundwater as a result of the oxidation of sulphides (ie as a result of mining). At Belle-Brook it is reasonable to assume the authigenic sulphide trace element composition reflects either localised groundwater contamination or hydrothermal mineralisation. The activity of silver in solid gold-silver alloys (electrum) has been measured with an electrochemical concentration cell based on the super ionic conductor silver-i3-alumina in the temperature range 200 to 80oaC.The measurements of the silver activity in the range 0.5 to 90.0 atom per eent silver were found to be highly reproducible although there is some disagreement with an earlier study which used a similar technique. At temperatures above 400° the silver activity exhibits both positive and negative deviations from ideality in the silver rich region.This method suggests a simple technique for the nondestructive determination of silver in electrum alloys.

"Hatch and ArcelorMittal Mines Canada have combined their expertise to develop a dynamic model of the latter’s Iron Ore Pellet Plant in Quebec, Canada. This model was used to predict the benefits of different expansion projects, as well as asses the best implementation sequence.Two modelling tools were used: a discrete-event simulation software used to develop the dynamic model of the Pellet Plant and an in-house process simulator. The latter was based on operational data and known behavior of the process, and was calibrated with historical data gathered under different operating conditions.The results of the process simulator were used as input values for the dynamic model, which included all of the operation steps of the pelletizing process, from concentrate beneficiation to baking of the pellets. The model has been validated by assessing its capacity to represent adequately the operation of the plant during a 20-month operating period. It was able to reproduce the plant capacity within a precision of 1.2%.Simulated “what-if” scenarios allowed quantifying the production increase associated with the addition of new equipment such as ball mills or balling discs, implemented individually or in combination. Results revealed a potential 10% increase in the annual plant production by adding additional equipment in the two most limiting sectors of the plant, grinding and agglomeration. The simulation results made it possible to quantify the synergistic effect of two projects on plant throughput; the model showed that the combination of two projects resulted in a greater production increase than the sum of the same projects evaluated individually.Now that it has proven reliable, the simulation tool can readily be used by ArcelorMittal Mines Canada process engineers to perform simulations for equipment optimization, and to evaluate the impact of various operating parameters such as equipment availability and tonnage, product mix or concentrate quality. This work showed that a reliable model can be developed based on known parameters in combination with the proper integration of the process knowledge."

"The Campbell Mine Constructed Wetlands has been in full operation, processing effluent from the water treatment plant of the mill circuit for the last two years.The overall results are extremely positive with dramatic improvements for the originally targeted parameters – Ammonia, Copper and toxicity.• Ammonia concentrations were reduced from an average of 5 mg/L to an average of 0.43 mg/L which translates to an average reduction of 91%.• Copper concentrations were reduced from an average concentration of 0.054 mg/L to an average of 0.019 mg/L, which translates to an average reduction of 65%.• LC50 Acute toxicity testing revealed no impact.• IC25 Chronic toxicity tests revealed no impairment to growth or reproduction.As a result of the improvements in discharge water quality from the wetland, 100 percent compliance with respect to all Certificate of Approval, MISA and MMER regulations for effluent will be consistently achieved.The system has proven to be very easy to operate and maintain, with a minimum of care. Given some basic rules are followed, the construction of the wetlands was straightforward and relatively inexpensive compared to other treatment methods.The ecological benefits of the operation of the wetland are also quite substantial, as is the positive image of the corporation in environmental stewardship.INTRODUCTIONOver the last four years, Campbell Mine has adopted an aggressive schedule for the development of wetlands for use as the final stage of effluent treatment within the tailings management facility. The focus of this work has been to utilize natural biological systems to provide Campbell Mine with a 100 percent compliant water quality with respect to all MISA, MMER and COA discharge criteria at all times throughout the effluent discharge period."

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3000 cfm (1.42 m3 /s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3 /s).

Improvements in production of high-purity chromium metal by magnesium reduction of anhydrous chlorides and by hydrogen treatment of electrolytic chromium are reported. Hydrogen-treated chromium has been arc-melted, and the arc-melted material has been successfully forged, rolled, and swaged. The material also has been forged at liquid-air temperatures. X-ray and metallographic studies indicate the recrystallization temperature of rolled chromium sheet to be about 750° C. Preliminary investigation of hot-bending characteristics of rolled chromium sheet shows the minimum bending temperature to be about 325° C. The heat resistance of chromium has been investigated.

The case of the P. G. E. railway is a peculiar one. Traversing, as it does, to a large extent, a mineralized country there are as yet no producing mines along its route although I am convinced that mines will be developed in the region tributary to the railway. The Fitzimmons group of claims, a copper property near Mons station, 37 miles from Squamish is now (unless recently relinquished) under bond to the Granby Company. On Cadwallader creek, in the upper Bridge river country, certain gold properties, referred to later, are being developed. Prospectors are fairly active in the Pemberton meadows area. There are also a large number in the Bridge river, Gun creek, and Whitewater districts. East of Marguerite station some development work is being prosecuted on some copper claims located there. In addition here and there throughout the entire route of the railway prospecting is being undertaken. At Hat creek, 15 miles from Pavilion station there is an enormous deposit of lignite. It is by no means certain that this coal can be profitably mined and hauled to the railway, but as a cheap fuel it offers possibilities in the recovery of by-products by destructive distillation. Logical procedure would ? indicate the expenditure of considerable money on development and, if results justify, the construction of a spur from the main line to the deposit.

Geologic faults have always been a plague to the mining industry, and have often reduced a mining venture from a profitable to a marginal operation, and even at times have forced companies to liquidation or bankruptcy. The use of geology as an economic tool in coal mining is not generally recognized, particularly in coal deposits which are horizontal or essentially flat-lying, in which faulting might not be prevalent. However in pitching coal seams, the existence of faults is considered an inherent challenge, as the inclination of the seam or seams per se, is a product of geologic disturbance. The problems of faults are a constant challenge to the management of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. in their operations in Pitkin County, Colorado, where high grade medium volatile coking coal is mined. The background for this paper has been provided by the experiences of these operations, in overcoming the effects of faults in mining, and resolving the fault structures. The properties of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. are located in central Colorado, 13 miles southwest of Carbondale, Colorado, a tow] on the main highway between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, Fig. 1. The elevation at the mine portals is approximately 8000 feet: there is a relief of some 2.000 feet to the adjacent ridges rising away from the [nine portals. 'The entire present production of these properties totaling 180.000 tons of clean coal per year is trucked to the railhead at Carbondale, Colorado, from whence it is shipped to the Geneva Steel Plant at Provo, Utah. The properties were initially opened in September 1952. A total of 125 men are currently employed with the production conting from the Number 1 and 3 Mines, and development workings of the Number 2 and 5 Mines respectively. While the No. 2 Vine was opened in 1953 prior to No, 3 Mine, the encountering of faults without sufficient development work accomplished to sustain production, necessitated the diversion of manpower to the other [nines for economic considerations. The new underground facilities for the LINAC Coherent Light Source project at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Menlo Park, CA, are constructed in very weak sedimentary rock interspersed with uncemented zones. In addition to several 21-footwide (excavated) tunnels, the NATM excavations include a large, 49-foot wide (excavated) cavern, an unprecedented size in this geology. The critical design issues include characterization of the weak rock, some shallow rock cover areas, and very stringent criteria for final invert slab movements within the tunnel. The design also incorporated severe seismic criteria, since the site is in close proximity to the San Andreas Fault.

Um comparativo entre dois métodos para determinação das temperaturas de transformação de fase, tendo como base análises de Calorimetria Diferencial de Varredura (DSC) em amostras de uma liga de NiTi equiatômica submetida a tratamentos térmicos para envelhecimento, foram utilizados neste trabalho. Sendo aplicado o método clássico comumente utilizado para análise desses resultados e o método utilizando da integral do pico de transformação de fase. Com base nas avaliações feitas, o método de integral por apresentar uma relação direta da fração de transformação demonstra-se mais eficaz para determinar o início e o fim da transformação por levar em consideração a forma do pico em função da trajetória de transformação.

The International Mineral Valuation (IMVAL) Committee, founded in 2012, develops strategies for conducting mineral valuations. These strategies have been developed into a mineral asset valuation template called the International Mineral Property Valuation Standards Template and is part of IMVAL's work to establish consistent international standards for mineral property valuation and reporting. This template is a living document that is updated from time to time and is based on three core values or pillars (Fundamental Principles): Competence, Materiality, and Transparency. Objectivity, Independence, and Reasonableness may be applied as required by national codes or standards. The Template harmonizes international standards for valuation of mineral assets as real property and represents a consensus of current good practices. It is not a stand-alone reporting code and does not supersede existing national reporting standards. The Template deals with mineral-property valuation as distinct from mineral-project evaluation. INTRODUCTION In his 1989 book, “The New Realities”, Peter F. Drucker, Clark Professor of Social Science at Claremont Graduate School, California, stated: “Information is data endowed with relevance and purpose. Converting data into information thus requires knowledge. And knowledge, by definition, is specialized.” (p. 209) The discipline of mineral valuation is knowledge-based and requires a mineral valuer to collect, analyze, and interpret data that are material to a mineral valuation assignment. In so doing, the valuer turns the data into information (data come first, followed by information as determined by the mineral valuer) for use by the client (from whom the valuer obtained the mineral valuation assignment) and other intended users. The valuer uses his or her experience and education (each valuer’s knowledge base) supported by a foundation built upon competency, materiality, and transparency, the three pillars of mineral valuation (“minerals valuation”, “mineral-property valuation”). The International Mineral Valuation Standards Template (“IMVAL Template”, IMVAL”, “Template”), third edition dated May 2018, defines mineral valuation as: “The estimation of the Value of a Mineral Property in money or monetary equivalent. The word ‘valuation’ can be used to refer to the estimated value (the Valuation conclusion) or to refer to the preparation of the estimated Value (the act of valuing).” (p. 14) Furthermore, the IMVAL Template clearly separates valuation from evaluation: “The Template deals with Valuation, which is distinct from Evaluation. The distinction inherent in these defined terms is that Valuation addresses the estimation of value of a Mineral Property, whereas Evaluation addresses the broader assessment of a Mineral Property for an investment decision.” (p. 2)

Poor coal recovery due to coal damage or loss caused by blasting can have a significant impact on a mining operation. Increasing coal recovery by reducing blast damage can provide a significant opportunity for coal mines to maximise their revenue and reduce their operating costs. This paper provides details on advanced drilling and blasting techniques used throughout the coal industry globally to prevent coal damage and movement during blasting. Typical coal loss and damage mechanisms are explained, along with how each of the applied techniques works to minimise the impact of each mechanism. Key requirements for a coal loss reduction program are detailed with typical design parameters used for each of the methods discussed. The positives and negatives of each method are also provided to enable comparisons and help determine suitability for a particular coal mining operation.

Oxygen requirement during acidic pressure oxidation of sulphide concentrates can he as high as 800 kg/(m3.h) in the first compartment of an autoclave when the total oxidation residence time is shortened to 30 minutes. To achieve such a high oxygen transfer rate while maintaining satisfactory oxygen utilization, a pilot plant campaign was launched at the Placer Dome Research Centre in 1998 to measure the oxygen mass transfer coefficient in a 5 m3 pressure vessel at a total pressure close to 500 psig with a 30 HP gassing agitator. Maximum oxygen flowrate to the pressure vessel was designed at 3 600 kg/h. In this paper, a great deal of information is provided on the gassing agitator, pressure vessel. measurement procedure and results. Without oxygen sparging, the oxygen mass transfer coefficient is 2 600 h-1 with a mixing power input of 5.0 kW/m3 in solution. With oxygen sparging, the oxygen mass transfer coefficient increases to 3 500 h-1 with a mixing power input of 4.0 kW/m3 in solution.

"The Eglinton-Crosstown Light Rail Transit line is a 19-kilometre corridor with a 10-kilometre underground portion currently being constructed by Metrolinx in Toronto through a densely populated urban environment. Tunneling works are being completed through two separate design-bid-build contracts that include consideration for a phased handover to a follow on contractor who will take ownership of the tunnels, including warranties, and will complete the stations and remainder of the system through a PPP delivery model including maintenance of the system for 30 years. Warranty provisions, settlement apportionment, tunnel leakage, potential delays and conflicts between contractors are just some of the risks the team managing tunnel contract integration had to consider when developing the PPP contract. This paper will present an overview of how these risks were assessed and allocated through the contracts and the strategies adopted to minimize risks to Metrolinx while ensuring successful procurement was maintained. INTRODUCTION The Big Move is a 25 year, $50 billion ($-CAD) plan for coordinated and integrated transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) in Ontario, Canada. This plan has been initiated by Metrolinx, a division of the provincial government of Ontario, and its vision, goals and objectives are rooted in creating a high quality of life; a thriving, sustainable and protected environment; and a strong, prosperous and competitive economy for the GTHA. The Big Move will triple the length of rapid transit service in the GTHA to 1,725km, significantly increase the percentage of the GTHA population living within two kilometers of rapid transit, reduce commute times to an average of 77 minutes per person per day and decrease greenhouse gas emissions from passenger transportation per person by 29%. Work is currently underway on several projects and more than $16 billion ($-CAD) of the planned investment has already been committed. A key project that forms part of this commitment is the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project which is being delivered in the City of Toronto under Metrolinx’s Rapid Transit (RT) Program. This complex and sizeable undertaking has been broken into a number of separate contracts comprising: LRT Vehicles contract; Eglinton West Tunnels Project; Eglinton East Tunnels Project; and a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) contract to complete the underground stations, at-grade stops, all rail infrastructure and systems and to maintain the entire system for 30 years. The PPP contract, which includes an initial capital portion of approx. $5.1 billion ($-CAD), has recently been awarded to Crosslinx Transit Solutions, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) consortium comprised of SNC Lavalin, Aecon, Dragados and EllisDon."

ABSTRACT: Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine particles. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidization water. We investigated the physics of particle transport inside Falcon concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling velocity. We derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. We intend to extend the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios by adding hindered settling to account for solid concentration effects.

In some parts of the world, silver chloride occurs naturally in deposits of cerargyrite (1) (i.e. horn silver). In other cases, silver chloride is produced and exploited for its well- known photographic or electrochemical properties. In this case, it is a valuable commodity needing no further refinement. However, silver chloride is frequently encountered in precious metals refining. In most cases, it is a by-product that occurs in small amounts. For example, it is a common occurrence in gold refining when using the Miller and Wohlwill refining processes or when parting fire assay beads. As such, the mode of reduction to elemental silver is of little impact on the overall refining economics. Thus, a variety of reduction methods are employed all enjoying varying degrees of popularity (2). On the other hand, silver chloride serves as a key intermediate in the production of fine silver by nitrogen species catalyzed acid pressure leaching of refractory silver concentrates. This has most recently been practiced at the Sunshine Mining & Refining plant located in Kellogg, Idaho. Thus, efficient methods of reduction, precipitation and materials handling on an industrial scale are of the utmost importance. In this presentation, the evolution of these methods will be detailed.

A meeting between representatives of the Scientific and Industrial Research Council of Alberta and the Deputy Minister of Mines for Canada was held at Edmonton in May, 1929, for the purpose of formulating a co-operative plan for carrying forward studies in aid of the development of commercial methods for utilizing the bituminous sands of Alberta. It was agreed that to the Alberta Research Council should be allocated the general problem of investigation of the processes for the separating of bitumen from the sands, including studies of methods of emulsifying, dehydrating and otherwise preparing separated bitumen for industrial applications. It was further agreed that during the present year the work of the Alberta Research Council should be to continue its laboratory investigations of points of design of its separation plant; to further perfect its separation procedure; to recondition its existing separation plant at Dunvegan Yards, Edmonton, in the light of laboratory studies and to operate it for the purpose of demonstrating its efficiency; to carry on tests in emulsifying and dehydrating or otherwise preparing separated bitumen for industrial application; and on the basis of the experience gained in the operation of the preliminary plant at Dunvegan Yards to prepare and design and, as far as possible, to proceed with the erection of, a semi-commercial separation plant at a site to be chosen, probably at the bituminous sand deposits near McMurray, Alberta. This paper presents, in the main, a progress report of the carrying out of this programme.
