THE machine from which the following results were obtained makes one of a row of seven at work in the Junction North, Concentration Mill at Broken Hill, New South Wales. It consists essentially of a belt for dressing purposes, which travels round two 12-in drums situated at either end of a wooden frame. This frame is supported on wooden legs, and the whole is affixed to two iron castings, one on either side of the frame. A to-and-fro motion is obtained from an eccentric shaft, which, together with the stationary end of the supporting legs, is carried by the iron castings. A belt drive to the forward drum provides a constant rate of travel to the dressing belt.The top half of the dressing belt is supported on 3-in rollers spaced about 12-in centres along the frame of the vanner. A fairly thick dressing belt is used, and no trouble whatever is experienced from the formation of gutters between the rollers.These belts are 28 ft 4 in long, 4 ft wide, 3-16 in thick, and are made of two-ply 32-oz duck, with a coating of rubber on either side. The surface available for dressing is about 10 ft 6 in x 3 ft 8 in- ie, about 38'5 square feet. The machine is driven atthe rate of 245 i-in strokes per minute, while the dressing belt travels at 15 feet per minute...

"In order to protect public safety in the event of a deliberate fire attack, underground rail authorities are increasingly considering the need to design for arson-initiated fire scenarios. Where typical design fires for modern rolling stock mean a peak fire size is reached after 12 minutes, an arson-initiated fire reaches its peak within 2-3 minutes. We present the innovations required to successfully incorporate this requirement on a recent design-build project. In stations 3D modelling is used to optimise smoke reservoir designs, smoke chimneys, station boxes and tunnel geometry to allow coordination with structural requirements. In tunnels, novel coupling of one dimensional network modelling and 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to improve assessment of complex fire scenarios. Finally, the impact on tunnel structures is assessed through comparison with standard time-temperature curves and risk of explosive spalling. INTRODUCTION An increasing regulatory environment and the appreciable influence that terrorist incidents have had on public safety policy have motivated the need to protect against large arson fires, especially in civil structures and public transport systems. With a greater reliance of a growing urban population on underground subway systems, design of such infrastructure is continually being reassessed and developed worldwide. Underground rail authorities are paying increased consideration to the design of fires - with properties beyond the upper regions of growth and intensity - amongst arson fire studies. Use of fire hardened materials on modern rolling stock means fires caused accidentally can be expected to develop relative slowly. However, recent experiments involving large initiating fires (as would result from an arson attack) have shown rapid fire growth rates and flashover leading to greater maximum heat release rates, Hadjisophocleous (2012), White (2010), and Lönnermark, et al. (2015). This paper describes the challenges and innovations required to complete a detailed design to control smoke from such aggressive super-fast growing fires. Computational modelling is used to demonstrate the required smoke control design by configuring the mechanical exhaust system combined with careful coordination with the architectural and structural design. The design objectives are to provide tenable egress paths in accordance with NFPA 130 (2014) and fire-fighting access. Finally, analysis of the design fire is used to inform the tunnel lining design, reducing the risk of explosive spalling, protecting the asset in the event of a severe fire."

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). Surface drainage samples, the usual media employed in mapping national territories, cannot be used for the geochemical mapping of carbonate terrains because there is no regular surface-drainage pattern on karst. Suitable sampling media have been studied in Yugoslavia, one-third of which consists of karst terrain. Sampling designs for the work were based on analysis of variance techniques. During initial investigations of various sampling materials in NW Yugoslavia sediment and aquatic moss from karst springs, along with soil, were established as the most appropriate media. Modified sampling procedures were then carefully applied along the entire Yugoslav karst belt, which includes terrains of contrasting topography, climate, pedology and vegetation. The studies indicate that climate and relief do not systematically influence the geochemical composition of soil. Regional and local variability was assessed for 21 chemical elements and the feasibility of producing stable regional geochemical maps was determined for a number of elements on the basis of sampling aquatic moss and sediment from karst springs and soil

"A lot of floatation reagents (collectors, inhibitors and regulators) for the beneficiation of copper ores have been well developed in the past century. However, it is still unclear about the micro interaction mechanism of these flotation reagents with copper ores. In this paper, the interaction mechanism of these flotation reagents with the copper atom on chalcopyrite has been systematically investigated by first principle DFT (density functional theory) calculations. Thirty-four specific common functional groups linked with the same hydrocarbon chain (ethyl) are optimized at a B3LYP/def2-TZVP level, the solvation effect was included with the SMD solvation model. The analysis of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and nature bond orbital (NBO) charge of these reagents reveals their potential applications to other types of copper-bearing mineral. Further investigation of the thermodynamics calculations gives more reliable data to screen collectors or inhibitors for copper-bearing mineral. The flotation results from carefully reviewed literatures are in good agreement with the calculation results. This work might also shed new light on the development and discovery of highly efficient and selective flotation reagents with low cost based on the computational methods.INTRODUCTION Froth flotation,(Shean & Cilliers, 2011) a mineral processing approach, is applied to efficiently enrich valuable minerals from the mixture, which is achieved according to the dictinctive surface properties of minerals. In the past century, researchers have develped an aboundant of flotation reagents by extraction or synthetize, and many carefully selected reagents might die in the bench tests or the pilot tests before the pratice.(Bulatovic & SrdjanM, 2007) Generally, it involves a lot of cost and tedious works by conducting flotation tests to screen flotation reagents. Flotation reagents have been boomed robustly with the developing of the organic synthesis.(Liu, Yang, & Zhong, 2017) Reseachers found the specific properties of a reagent are determined by its functional groups and the length of the hydrocarbon, where the functional group is assigned as the adsorption site to adsorb onto mineral surfaces and the hydrocarbon chain is called as a hydrophobic group."

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on how mine geologists added about 141t (4.53 million oz) at Newmont Mining’s gold operations in Nevada during 2003. Part one (ME, July2004, pp. 19-26) showed how cross-functional teamwork among mine geologists, engineers, metallurgists and operators added $65 million in revenues at Newmont’s Gold Quarry Mine. Part two deals with how this same cross-functional team added about 25.8 t (830,000 oz) of gold reserves and two years of life at the company’s LoneTree Mine. This was done through improved reconciliation methods, pit optimization designs and updated geotechnical parameters. Part two also discusses how Newmont’s Nevada mine personnel added about 62.2 t (2 million oz) of gold reserves at its Twin Creeks Mine, extending the mine’s life by several years. Following a Major underground coal mine incident there followed a review of the role of mines rescue ? the Queensland Mines Rescue Brigade. It wasn?t until 2002 that the real change started to happen. The issue of geographical distance was addressed by mines rescue sub stations being located on the mines sites with parent rescue stations in a central location. The funding was by means of a levy on the mining industry with legislative standards and performance included. The previous Rescue Brigades were not well organised (central districts) and the application of recognised quality management practices within local management was lacking. The structure was based on other nations models and miners managing miners was an issue for the organisation. The reform was some what painful and the QMRS organisation will still evolve with continuous improvement. Queensland has the National Champion mines rescue team for the eighth year. QMRS is participating at the level in the industry of influencing emergency systems and training senior mine management in ?Emergency Mine Management? coaching the industry in emergency response systems. We have come a long way. We have had some success and there is always the challenge of setting the standards, those we should aspire to and the courage to influence the industry to higher goals of a safer future.

It is important to study structures and their retrofitting techniques in order to avoid earthquake-induced seismic damage within countries that are prone to earthquakes. Todays, micro piles are employed as useful structural components for seismic behavior improvement. The present study analyzes inclined micro piles subjected to seismic loading by using the three-dimensional finite difference method (FDM). FDM assumes an idealized three-dimensional soil-micro pile model to perform logical behavior evaluation in the event of an earthquake. Linear and elastic micro piles and elastoplastic soil were employed in this study. The Mohr-Coulomb criterion was employed in the failure control of the micro piles. The micro piles were subjected to the 1978 Tubas earthquake records. The numerical results were compared to experimental data. The comparison revealed good agreement between the numerical results and experimental data. The inclined micro piles were found to sufficiently enhance soil strength under seismic loading, inducing smaller displacements than vertical micro piles. Furthermore, the soil and inclined micro piles showed salient interaction.

Synopsis U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accidents statistics have identified ore-pass hazards as a significant safety problem in U.S. underground metal mines. The statistics show that nearly 75% of injuries are directly or indirectly related to pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes, the use of hand tools in ore passes, fails of broken rock in ore passes and structural failures of chutes or gates and ore-pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines. Risk assessment methods, such as fault-tree analysis, have been employed to identify the most probable causes of orepass failures, define research priorities and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning and unsafe ore passes. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in a laboratory setting with the use of a reduced-scale orepass mock-up. Field tests are being initiated in mine ore passes to determine static and dynamic loads. Data from the test ore passes are being compared with data from the mine to characterize true system behaviour. Computer modelling with the use of closed-form solutions, finite-element analyses and a newly developed particle flow code predicts static and dynamic leads from the flow and the impact of ore and waste in the ore pass. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than expected. The total static load is substantially less than is typically used fur the structural design of chute and gate support members. It is suggested that damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads. This is being verified with the use of results from laboratory tests, field tests and particle flow analyses. Ore passes are vertical or steeply inclined openings in a rock mass through which ore and waste are transported and where they mar also be stored. A typical underground mining system is shown in Fig. 1. The arrows indicate the locations of ore passes and loading pockets and their relative configurations. The control of material flow is potentially one of the most hazardous operations in underground mining. According to MSHA data. most of the ore pass-related accidents in the U.S.A. are associated with the loading-unloading cycle and removal of blockages from ore passes. In particular, attempts to free ore hang-ups have resulted in multiple fatalities. The hazards are obvious; there is uncertainty as to when the ore will break loose and miners are unable to escape falling rock to a safe location. Although ore passes and chutes and gate systems for underground metal and non-metal mines roust meet the requirements specified in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Parts 57 and 75, recent structural failures of ore-pass linings and gates have underlined the lack of adequate ore-pass design standards available to both MSHA enforcement staff and mine engineers. Because of the importance of an ore pass to the safe operation of a mine design criteria need to be assessed and new guidelines developed. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the Nationals Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines and studying design criteria for ore passes. In order to further elucidate the mechanisms involved in autogenous grinding, the fracture of rock specimens in free-fall impact was studied using the theory of elasticity. Stress distributions in rock specimens under various conditions of impact were analyzed and the conditions for failure were examined in relation to the compressive and tensile strength of rock. The energy equation derived for autogenous grinding coincides basically with Lewis' generalized formula or Oka and Majima's formula, and it is sufficiently general to incorporate all of the three older theories, viz; those of Rittinger, Bond and Kick.

For years traditional optical microscopic techniques have been used successfully to carry out mineralogical studies on processing products. Essential information could be obtained by supplementing microscopic data with X-ray powder diffraction data, chemical analyses, etc. However, most of the time the mineralogists working on plant related issues, would supply qualitative information to the metallurgists, due to quantification not being possible in the available time. Since the late-80s, the use of semi-automated to automated techniques for mineral quantification has impacted positively on the use of mineralogy for optimising processing plants. Rustenburg Platinum Mines (now Anglo Platinum) were the first mining company to purchase a Qem*Sem in 1987. With the success achieved in quantifying the minerals in the concentrator streams of the Rustenburg Platinum operations, a second instrument was purchased soon after. These instruments have proven invaluable tools in understanding the flotation behaviour of the sulfide and gangue minerals in the various reefs of the Bushveld. Restrictions in the resolution of these earlier instruments, as well as the time involved in searching for and correctly identifying the fine-grained platinum-group minerals (PGM), meant that these investigations focused on the deportment of the more abundant base metal sulfides, rather than on the actual PGM. The Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA), which became available in the late 1990s, was well suited to detect and analyse minerals occurring in trace amounts such as the PGM. Anglo Platinum was the first mining company to purchase such an instrument and now has fourteen systems operating at the AR Crown Mines site. One of the applications of these systems involves the study of feeds, concentrates and tailings from the various concentrators on a monthly basis. These routine investigations provide information on a variety of mineralogical parameters, including liberation, association, and grain size. Results are used to emphasise areas for improvement, and specifically underline those areas where improvements will have the most impact on recovery. After new or different technologies have been implemented, mineralogical characterisation of the different process streams is an essential component in the assessment of the impact of these changes on flotation performance. In addition, the knowledge is databased for future reference to draw trends across the various concentrators around the Bushveld complex, and is also used for comparative studies when plants experience high losses to tailings. Due to the success of these investigations the question was posed whether it was possible to obtain data on a daily basis, as compositing samples could hide the impact of daily events. Although the instruments currently used are suitable for a research environment, these are not ideal for mine-site implementation. For that reason Anglo Platinum, together with FEI embarked on a development program to develop a system that can be implemented on-site to measure the important mineralogical characteristics on a daily basis. Important requirements for such a system include time-to-data, ease of use and regular quality control. Highlighting some results from concentrator studies, the presentation will review the progress on the development of automated mineralogical techniques for fast, automated mineral measurements. About forty percent of the SOx emissions are generated during the processing of metal sulfides of Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, etc. Although new technologies for metal sulfide's smelting allow the production of H2S04 with a reasonable cost and decrease the emissions of sulfur oxides, the generated quantity of SOx is considered as a serious threat to environment. This paper suggests alternatives for low temperature processing of complex sulfide ores or concentrates 'CSO or CSC' under neutral, reducing and chlorinating atmospheres or their combination. At T > 400 "C, The neutral and reducing treatments allow the decomposition of pyrite and the partial recovery of sulfur as So and H2S. At 300 "C, the chlorinating treatment of CSC is fast, exothermic and allows the separation of FeC13 from the valuable elements' chlorides. It also generates SyCIx that can be either reduced by H2 or hydrolyzed in presence of sodium sulfide. The recovery rate of elemental sulfur with respect to the sulfur input exceeds 90 %.

Following the discovery by CRA of gold at Mt Kare, and the subsequent 1988-90 gold rush, mechanised mining of the alluvial resource is now being carried by a company jointly owned by CRA (51%) and landowners of the area (49%). Mining is currently being carried out using small gravity processing plants fed by hydraulic excavators. Use of hydraulic mining techniques will be limited to over- coming difficulties related to the high clay content of the material and the soft nature of the bedrock. Current resource estimates suggest that the alluvials will have a mining life of three to four years. During this time, exploration of the hydrothermal gold mineralisation at Mt Kare will be carried out by a wholly-owned company of CRA. It is hoped that this will lead to establishment of an economic primary gold resource.

Fifteen shots of three explosives with charge weights of 0.52, 1.1, 3.1, and 5.1 kilograms were fired in a pond to study the seismic effects of detonating explosives in water. Shock pressures and bubble periods were measured with pressure transducers in the water. Vibrations were measured on land in three orthogonal directions with particle velocity gages. Statistical tests indicated that a charge weight exponent of 0.43 best scaled the data. While shock pressures and bubble periods showed considerable differences in explosive performances, the amplitudes of ground vibrations showed less difference, and one prediction equation was therefore derived to estimate vibration amplitudes from all the explosives.

I. INTRODUCTION. THESE impurities are perhaps the most important things in steel-especially steel made by the oxidation processes-the effect of which has not been at least approximately determined. By oxidation processes I mean the Bessemer and Siemens-Martin, during which the metalloids in the charge are removed by oxidation. It has been truly said that it is a clear advantage to have a new name for a new thing. To secure this and to economize space, let us adopt the name sonim (plural sonims) to designate the solid non-metallic impurities existing in steel or other metal. I would define a sonim as a solid non-metallic portion of matter existing as an impurity in metal. A piece of sand, brick, clay, or such material, imbedded in metal, would be considered as a foreign body, not as an impurity, and therefore not a sonim. The studies of sonims of which the results have been published hitherto, have been made chiefly or wholly on finished or at least on cold steel, without much, if any, regard to the specific methods by which the steel was made. While many of the results so obtained are valuable, they give little help in determining the cause, effect, or cure of the disease. It is not enough, in such a study, to know merely the commercial name of the process; for within the field of each process lies a great number of possible variations, each of which will yield a result differing in some respect from all others; and the control of sonims is particularly dependent. on the metallurgical treatment of the metal, because of the inability of analytical chemistry to throw much light on their presence, condition, and effect, as they usually occur in commercial steels. The microscope aids more, perhaps, than chemistry in their study.

"INTRODUCTION The Denver region coal field, covering an area of approximately 7,640 square miles, extends from the Wyoming State line to the middle of El Paso County, Colo. The coal in this region is subbituminous in rank. Much of it is used as domestic fuel. During the last decade the production of coal in this field has remained fairly constant at an average of 2,600,000 tons per year. This production has come from 50 to 60 mines, 88 to 90 percent of the production being from the section of the field north of Denver.According to the Standard Specifications for Classification of Coal by Bank of the American Society for Testing Materials 4/ the coals in this region are classified in the Subbituminous B and C group. On the as—mined basis, they contain about 22 percent moisture and average 9,600 B.t.u. per pound. They are noncoking and slack to a variable extent when exposed to the weather. This is characteristic of subbituminous coals."

"IntroductionAir sampling for airborne contaminants requires a system for moving air, a collection method, and a procedure to determine the quantity of contaminant collected. Because occupational exposure limits and air quality standards frequently are expressed in terms of concentrations, a method of determining the volume of air sampled is also needed. The four principal components in a sampling train are shown in Figure 12-1. The inlet admits the air sample into the train; the collector(s) separates the gas, vapor, or particles from the air; the flowmeter measures the rate or total quantity of air sampled; and the pump (air mover) provides the suction required to draw an air sample through the train. Inlet sampling considerations are discussed in Chapter 21. Various types of collectors are described in subsequent chapters. Flowmeters are discussed in Chapter 7.This chapter will describe the air mover portion of the sampling train and air sampling systems that contain three or four components in a convenient package. The chapter consists of two parts. The first part contains a brief description of the different types of air movers and air sampling systems. The second part consists of tables and figures showing detailed information on a wide variety of commercially available air movers and sampling systems. ient size is filled with a liquid in which the suspected contaminant is insoluble. When the liquid is allowed to escape from the vessel, it is replaced by air from the atmosphere to be sampled. Such an air sample is an integrated sample rather than an instantaneous sample because the mass of fluid requires a finite time to empty. In fact, by employing a large vessel with controlled drainage, this method can be used to move air at low flow rates through a sample collector for extended intervals.
