TITANIUM is one of the most abundant elements in the minerals that make up the earth's crust but its use in industry is only a generation old; yet probably no other important commercial mineral raw material (except possibly magnesium) has undergone more changes and developments in sources of supply, in processing techniques, in uses and applications, in the past 10 years, or stands on' such a threshold of still more advances. Its outstanding use today is as the oxide, and because of its extreme whiteness, high refractive index, chemical stability, and relative cheapness, it has become the white pigment used in the largest volume. New developments in the uses of titanium metal, potential and actual, may surpass the pigment use of the oxide before many years. TITANIUM-BEARING MINERALS Although a number of minerals contain titanium as the principal metal, only a few are of commercial importance. These are arizonite, ilmenite, and rutile. The other oxides, brookite, pseudobrookite, and anatase, occur in a few deposits, one at least of minor importance. The silicate titanite, and the double oxide of calcium and titanium, perovskite, occur in a few deposits in quantities sufficient to be considered as potential ores were not richer deposits of the oxides available elsewhere. Arizonite is a name given by Palmer46a to a mineral found some years ago in minute quantities in Arizona, which has the formula Fe203.3Ti02. Unexpectedly, it was found that the black titaniferous iron oxide found in large quantities on the beaches of many continental land masses corresponds in chemical composition to this formula (although ferrous oxide is always present). No one has yet been able to prove that the commercial mineral on the beaches is truly arizonite, or an allotropic modification of it, since X-ray investigations by Howard Carl and A. F. Gabriel, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and by the X-ray laboratory of the Chemical Department at the Experimental Station of the du Pont company, have shown only that the sand mineral gives just a jumble of lines, rather than an identifiable pattern. Titanium has the potential to become the third wave of light metals used in high volume applications, following on from aluminium and magnesium. These light metals have functional attributes that can meet many of the goals needed for societyÆs transition to sustainable development. CSIRO has initiated a Light Metals Flagship to focus additional R&D efforts in support of the light metals industry. The vision of the Light Metal Flagship is for Australia to lead the Light Metals Age by reducing the costs and environmental impacts through innovative technologies for these metals. Life cycle principles will be used to identify novel technology pathways for metal production and product manufacture that are more energy efficient, less capital intensive and incorporating eco-efficient material flow chains.Under the auspices of the Light Metal Flagship, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of titanium metal production was carried out with mineral sands mining of ilmenite as the starting point. Upgrading of the ilmenite to synthetic rutile by the Becher process and titanium metal production by the conventional Kroll process were the processing routes considered. Two alternative processes for titanium metal production, the FFC Cambridge process involving direct electrochemical deoxygenation of titanium dioxide, and a plasma process for producing titanium powder from titanium tetrachloride were also examined using LCA methodology and compared to the Kroll process. The environmental impacts included in the LCA were greenhouse gas emissions (Global Warming Potential, GWP) and acid rain gas emissions (Acidification Potential, AP). The Gross Energy Requirement (GER) of each process was also determined.These results for titanium, along with those from previous LCA studies by CSIRO on aluminium, magnesium, steel and stainless steel production, were used to show that despite the relatively large amounts of primary energy required for the production of these light metals, their special properties (eg corrosion resistance, strength and light weight) mean that these metals offer potential GER and GWP reductions compared to other competing materials in a number of applications, when viewed on a life cycle basis. Two applications considered in the paper are the lightweighting of motor vehicles and chemical plant equipment manufacture.

Industrial production of titanium occurs via the batch-wise reduction of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) with a reducing metal, being magnesium in the Kroll process, or sodium in the Hunter process. In the search for low cost titanium, the CSIR is developing a continuous process to produce titanium powder directly via metallothermic reduction of TiCl4 in molten salt, dubbed the CSIR-Ti process. The move to a continuous process has been attempted by a number of organizations, but was until now always met with failure, due in no small part to challenges inherent in the process chemistry. The reaction between TiCl4 and the reducing metal can occur directly, when TiCl4 or any titanium sub-chlorides present, comes into contact with suspended or dissolved reducing metal. The reaction can also occur indirectly, without any physical contact between the reacting species, via an electronically mediated mechanism. The reaction mechanism via electronic mediation can cause TiCl4 to react at the outlet of the feed port, rapidly causing blockages of the TiCl4 feed line. The electrical conductivity of the metal reactor can also cause the electronically mediated reaction to favour the formation of titanium sponge on the reactor walls and internals, rather than titanium powder. Various methods were investigated to overcome the problem of blockages in the TiCl4 feed line, e.g. mechanical removal, sonic velocities, dilution of the TiCl4 and the use of ceramic feed lines. This article discusses problems experienced with the continuous feeding of reagents, and various methods attempted are shown and discussed. Information is also given on the morphology, chemical composition and suitability of the final titanium powder for powder metallurgical application as presently produced by the CSIR-Ti process.
