The rainfall during the last six months of 1942 in Scranton and vicinity was 24.06 in.—only 4.35 in more than the average for this district in any equivalent period—yet that rain forced The Hudson Coal Co. to handle 38.8 tons of water for every ton of coal mined. It filled to overflowing, or to a higher level, 14 flooded mine areas holding, in total volume, 8.3 billion gallons of water in storage; brought about a pumpage of 11.4 billion gallons in the months of December 1942 and January, February and March 1943 Half of the total energy generated or purchased (44,322,980 kw-hr.) was required to keep the mines sufficiently free of water to permit the mining of coal during a period of much needed output. Fig. I shows the extent to which this flooding of exhausted and idle properties has proceeded, and is known to be proceeding further, at the upper end of the Northern field. This rainfall (24.06 in.) means 80,559,444 tons of water on approximately 46.2 sq. miles of area tributary to the pumping plants. During the high rainfall period, 72,687,661 tons went underground, being pumped at the stations in this territory. This means an inflow of 88per cent, a runoff of 12 per cent compared with 64 per cent during normal conditions in a normal region. During this period no floods, either surface or underground, had to be dealt with, although the streams and rivers were high on several occasions. In general, the rainfall for the first three months of 1943 can be described as heavy but not abnormal.9 These figures not only indicate the large volumes of water to be handled but, by their very size, they also emphasize that the mine-water problem is not to be conquered, at least from an economical standpoint, by merely buying and installing more and more pumps. Into the solving of this water problem must go much planning, adhering to the principle of keeping the highest percentage of water at the highest possible level for the longest period of time; the storage of huge volumes in sumps capable of being reduced after the flood inflow and at rates less than the inflow; plans for prevention of surface inflow; provision of the minimum of pumping capacity arranged to as nearly 100 per cent pumping load factor as is possible; intercompany joint pumping plants; the conducting of water from one plant to another and from one property to another over distances measured in miles; priorities in power to the threatening situations; and. balance of the necessities and dangers existent in one colliery over another, day by day, when quantities of water are running high. Despite these astronomical figures of water volumes, their disposal to the surface is accomplished reasonably cheaply because, although the annual cost of $575,020 is a large sum, the cost per ton is about 0.1168 cents. This paper is written as a discussion of the paper, "Buckling of Tubing in Pumping Wells, Its Effects and Means for Controlling It" by Arthur Lubinski and K. A. Blenkarn, which war published in the March, 1957, issue of Journal oP Petroleum Technology. An analogy is drawn between the buckling of tubing in pumping wells and a fiube, fitted with frictionless pistom, linked by an inelastic rod, and which is subject to an internal pressure. A simple derivation shows that the critical internal pressure exerts a hydrostatic force on the pisfon which is close to the Euler load for compression buckling of the same tube. While the results agree with those of Ref. I, the basis of calculations has been changed and clarified. The presence of internal upsets at the pistons is discussed. INTRODUCTION In the Appendix, Lubinski and Blenkarn state that a tube with ends closed by frietionless pistons connected by an inelastic rod (Fig. 1) will behave as a column loaded with a force equal to the tension force in the rod. They note that, while the fluid may not resist a shear force, the moment in every cross section is piston force multiplied by the elastic line deflection (c.f., the loaded column). Since the equations of the elastic lines are similar in the two cases, the solution is carried over from the loaded column. On the contrary it is suggested that while the method of solution remains unchanged from the column case, the actual stress distribution is different, a fact which is taken into account in this note. A simple method of approximating the buckling pressure is given, and their reasoning in our mathematical language is continued. GENERAL EQUATIONS The equation of an elastic line, initially straight in the x direction (Fig. 2), is given by In the case of a loaded column, this may be written: For the pressurized tube it was shown, by analogy with the loaded column, that tion has a solution that, for P, = EI/P, any deflection is stable (a criterion for buckling). An attempt will be made to describe more precisely, the forces acting on the tube, and to analyze the buckling condi,tions. DISCUSSION If the tube assumed a deflected position, the volume between the pistons would increase so that in deflecting, the energy of the fluid would decrease. When the increase in elastic energy of the tube (due to bending) is equal to the decrease of fluid pressure energy, buckling conditions exist. Analyzing the forces on the tube (Fig. 3), two transverse forces, T,, T,, exerted by the pistons, are balanced by a resultant of the pressure elements which are linearly dependent on the local curvature of the elastic line (Fig. 4). Unlike most buckling cases, the forces depend on the shape of the elastic line, a condition that makes a rigorous mathematical treatment difficult. Several approximations may be used to clarify the problem.

ThE phase relationships for the MnO-MnS system have been investigated only in the eutectic region. wentrupl reported a eutectic at 1280°C (2345°F) with approximately 50 wt pct of each component, as based on the earlier work of Andrew, Maddocks, and Fowler.2 More recently silverman3 corrected these figures to 2275° ±10°F (1246°C) with 63 wt pct MnS and 37 pct MnO. Neither Wentrup nor Silverman investigated the solid-solution limits in this system. However, Wentrup did suggest with his phase diagram sketch that the maximum solubility of MnS in MnO is 10 wt pct, and the solubility of MnO in MnS is nearer 20 wt pct, Fig. 1. These figures have been utilized in subsequent publications without further verification.4 There had been evidence found in this laboratory that the above solid-solution figures were high. An investigation was therefore conducted using the following procedure. Samples containing MnO and MnS were contained in platinum foil, heated just above the eutectic temperature in a purified nitrogen at- mosphere, and quenched into distilled water. The MnO had been prepared by calcining reagent grade MnCO3 in nitrogen at 1400°C. Only MnO was detected in subsequent X-ray diffraction analyses. The MnS had been prepared by sulfur deoxidation of reagent grade MnSO4 according to the reaction: MnSO4 + S2 ? MnS + 2SO2 The details of the sulfide preparation procedure, which utilized atmospheric sulfur pressures at 950°C, are discussed elsewhere.5 The sulfur content of the sulfide was determined to be 36.8 * 0.2 pct, which matches the stoichiometric value of 36.9 pct. No evidence of either MnO or MnSO4 was detected microscopically or by X-ray diffraction. The single-phase combinations of MnO and MnS at the eutectic temperature indicate the limit of solid solution as shown in Fig. 2(a) and (c), and the revised phase diagram is shown in Fig. 2(d). The melting temperature for MnO is that provided by Glasser.6 The eutectic temperature of 1232° ± 5°C and eutectic composition of 64 wt pct MnS are in close agreement with Silverman's correction of Wentrup's work. The maximum solubility of MnO in MnS was determined to be 1.7 ± 0.2 wt pct. The maximum solubility of MnS in MnO was determined to be 1.8 ± 0.2 wt pct. These figures represent the lower limit for the presence of liquid at 1260°C and are significantly lower than the earlier estimated solid-solution figures. PREVIOUS investigations have shown that lithium is body-centered cubic from near its melting point to the temperature of liquid air1,2,3 Nevertheless there was an incentive to search again for a transformation at low temperatures: C. Zener4,5 has remarked that the low value of the elastic modulus (11 - C12)/2 of body-centered cubic metals and alloys implies a rapid increase in free energy with decreasing temperature, which would favor the occurrence of a transformation; also the shear movement to which this modulus applies is one that can transform a body-centered cubic structure into a slightly distorted face-centered cubic structure. It was confirmed that lithium does not transform spontaneously at liquid nitrogen temperature, but it was found that a transformation can be induced at this temperature by cold working the metal,6 and at slightly lower temperatures a different transformation occurs spontaneously. Transformations were also found in solid solutions of magnesium in lithium. THE NATURE OF THE TRANSFORMATIONS Before presenting a detailed treatment of the technique used and the specific data obtained, it would be well to give a brief survey of the general characteristics of the transformations. A new crystal structure begins to form spontaneously in a specimen when it is cooled below a critical temperature. In lithium the structure appears to be close-packed hexagonal; in the Li-Mg alloys most of the diffraction lines (but not all) are near those for hexagonal lithium. The transformation proceeds as the temperature is lowered and soon stops if the temperature is held constant or raised. The course of the transformation on cooling is indicated by the curve at the lower left of Fig I. This curve is drawn in stepped fashion because the transformation goes by discrete steps with audible clicks. Because of the similarity to the decomposition of austenite into martensite in steels, it seems appropriate to designate the beginning of the spontaneous transformation on cooling as the Ms point. On heating to room temperature after the low temperature treatment only the usual BCC structure is found. On heating, the low temperature modification begins to disappear at a temperature which will be designated as Ac. The transformation on heating is halted when the rise in temperature is halted. The temperature must be raised 40 to 50°C above Ac before the reversion is complete-an interval which is sensitive to the rate of heating and to the time of holding at temperatures above Ac. This behavior on heating thus has similarities also to the formation of martensite in the cooling of steels.

The phase VPt has been reported to have a crystal structure of the B19 (AuCd) type at low temperatures.''' A recent investigation3 has indicated that this phase forms by an ordering reaction from the disordered fcc Pt(V) solid solution which is stable at high temperatures. olander4 has shown that there exists a close structural relationship between the orthorhombic B19 structure and a fcc structure possessing the L1 , (CuAu) type of atomic ordering. One may derive the B19 structure by a shear-like displacement of the atoms in the (002) plane of the ordered fcc lattice along the (010) direction through a distance equal to one eighth of the unit cell dimension, see Fig. 1, followed by an orthorhombic distor; tion of the cube axes such that a = 2.693A. h = 4.413A. and c =4.767A (estimated uncertainty 0.005A). Filings of this phase were produced by grinding a VPt alloy having the B19 structure with a diamond dental grinding disc. When these filings were subjected to X-ray diffraction examination, a pattern of a severely cold-worked fcc structure was obtained. higher solution temperature used (1200 C) or to a much lower oxygen pressure than he reported, due to transfer through many bends and tubes in his complicated apparatus. An interesting observation was made when an oxygen addition was attempted in a cylindrical sample of columbium in the cold worked condition rather than in the annealed condition. The interior of the sample re-crystallized during the oxygen addition at 900°C. The periphery, however. (1 mm) did not recrystallize. A similar sample without oxygen recrystallized throughout the entire cross section. It appears that the re-crystallization is hindered by interstitial oxygen. Presumably, the interior recrystallized before appreciable oxygen could diffuse into the core. This work was supported by the United States Atomic Energy Commission. When the filings were annealed in a high vacuum furnace for 15 min at 110O0C, however. they returned to the B19 structure perhaps as a result of reordering. Subsequent less-severe cold-working of these filings by grinding in a hardened steel mortar and pestle at room temperature produced a transformation into a cold-worked L1, structure which was slightly tetragonal. Thus it appears that the degree of deformation may influence the final structure. Considerable line-broadening was observed in X-ray diffraction patterns obtained from the cold-worked filings and therefore no attempt was made to obtain accurate lattice parameters. During 1943 five oil fields and two gas-condensate fields were discovered in the East and East Central Texas district. The New Hope field, discovered by Tide Water-Seaboard in Franklin County, is the most important oil discovery since the Hawkins field in 1940. At the close of the year two oil sands were producing and two additional oil sands were being tested. The gas-condensate fields of Appleby in Nacog-doches County and the Stewards Mill field in Freestone County had only one producing well each. The Carthage field was extended 3 miles north and 4 miles west. Another well that was testing at the year end indicated a probable eastward extension of several miles. The Quitman field, in Wood County, was the most active from the standpoint of drilling operations. Approximately 48 wells were complcted during the year. The second and third most active fields were Hawkins field, Wood County, and Kildare field, Cass County, respectively. Wartime restrictions of material, together with manpower shortage and Federal spacing regulations, reduced the number of oil and gas-well completions from 265 in I942 to 171 in 1943. This represents a drop of 35 percent, or approximately 1/3, enough to replace the 531 producing wells abandoned in the district during the year. No changes were made in the price of crude oil in the district in 1943. The district produced 177,652,940 bbl. of condensate and oil during 1943. This represents an increase of approximately 11 per cent compared with the previous year. The East Texas field, which is the largest and most important field in the district, had an annual production of 128,568,647 bbl. of oil, which is approximately 6.5 per cent more than the previous year, and represents 72 per cent of the district's production of condensate and oil for the year. The district had an estimated basic daily allowable of approximately 509,000 bbl. of oil on Dec. 31, 1943. The entire district produced approximately 30 pcr cent of the state's production for the year 1943. The Hawkins field, Wood County, was operated 271 days during the year and with an average daily production of approximately 52,488 bbl. for the year. This field, which is the second largest in the district, produced 14,224,164 bbl, of oil during the year. Changes in annual production in certain fields in the district can be attributed to their ability to produce at higher rates, the demand, and transportation facilities in the war effort. The East Texas field showed an over-all decrease in reservoir pressure of 8.30 lb. during the year. Indications were that through the first quarter of 1944 the return of salt water to the reservoir was having a beneficial effect. It is hoped that, as more and more water is returned to the reser-

Using the quadratic formalism, thermodynamic equations are derived for the composition dependence of the heat and entropy of mixing. The applicability of these equations is confirmed by available experimental data on the activities and heats of mixing for binary metallic systems of Group ZZB elements. In a recent paper arkeen' introduced a quadratic formalism describing the composition dependence of the activity coefficient in the terminal regions of binary metallic solutions. That is, in the terminal region, which may extend to as much as 60 at. pct, the logarithm of the activity coefficient, log y,, of component 2 is a linear function of (1 - N,)' where N2 is the atom fraction of component 2. Similarly, for the other component, log yl is a linear function of (1 - N,)'. A number of iron-base binary liquid alloys were shown to obey this quadratic formalism. arkeen' extended this formalism also to any corner of a ternary system and showed that the activity coefficients of the components 1, 2 and 3 (1 is taken as the solvent) can be represented by quadratic terms involving five parameters, four of the binaries and one for the ternary system. Numerous examples given by arkeen' demonstrated the general applicability of the quadratic formalism to iron-base systems over a wide composition range. In this paper further examples are given of binary liquid systems (Group IIB elements, Zn, Cd, and Hg) and of several solid solutions, again demonstrating the appropriateness of this concept. A further purpose of this paper is to extend the quadratic formalism to the enthalpy and excess entropy of binary metallic solutions and to test the equations so found using available experimental data. QUADRATIC FORMALISM FOR HEATS AND ENTROPIES OF MIXING OF BINARY METALLIC SOLUTIONS The following equations, reproduced from Darken's paper, are for the two terminal regions of binary systems. at infinite dilution and a's are temperature dependent parameters to be determined from the experimental data. Although the quadratic formalism is an assumed representation of the data, Eqs. [I] to [4] are thermo-dynamically consistent with the Gibbs-Duhem relation and satisfy Raoult's and Henry's laws as limiting cases. As pointed out previously,' the following form of the Gibbs-Duhem equation facilitates the integration in general but particularly in regions I and 11, where each of the derivatives is constant. The partial molar enthalpy of solution i, (and i; the value of i, at infinite dilution) are related to the activity coefficients y, and y," by the thermodynamic relation Differentiating Eq. [l ] with respect to 1/T and substituting the above thermodynamic relation gives for region (I) It is reasonable to assume that over a temperature range of experimental interest, the enthalpy of mixing is essentially independent of temperature, implying from Eq. ORDERED G.P. zones having the cesium chloride structure were found to exist in the bcc iron-rich grains of an Fe-Au-Cu alloy that had been supersaturated with approximately equal atomic percentages of gold and copper, and aged at 400° and 350°C. Streaks and superlattice spots in electron diffraction patterns revealed the presence of the ordered zones in the aged material. The ordered Ll2 structure is commonly found for precipitates in fcc metals (e.g., Ni3A1 in nickelL7') but it is uncommon to find precipitates in bcc metals having the cesium chloride structure. The formation of the G.P. zones caused age hardening of the grains. Samples containing 3.8 at. pct each of gold and copper (with the remainder being iron) were annealed at 95@ or 1125°C in quartz capsules and were quenched by breaking the capsules under water. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed two solid solutions in the quenched samples. One solid solution was bcc and the other was fcc. The microstructure consisted of iron-rich grains of 0.3 mm diam surrounded by a yellow gold-copper-rich grain boundary network. The Au-Cu phase diagram %hows continuous solid solubility of gold and copper with ordered phases forming below 410°C. None of the ordered Au-Cu phases have the cesium chloride structure. Both Fe-Au and Fe-Cu phase diagrams3 show extended miscibility gaps and only terminal solid-solution phases. Consequently, it is reasonably certain the iron-rich grains consisted of an a-phase terminal solid solution, and the grain boundary network consisted of a gold-copper-rich terminal solid solution. Lattice parameters of the quenched solid solutions were consistent with the suggestion that the quenched phases were terminal solutions. The lattice parameter of the bcc phase (2.879A) obtained upon quenching from 950°C was higher than that (2.866A) for pure iron. The fcc phase in this sample had a lower lattice parameter than that for a 50 at. pct Au and 50 at. pci Cu solid solution, i.e., 3.866 compared to 3.877A. The lattice parameter for the 50 pct Au and 50 pct Cu solid solution was interpolated from data for Cu-Au solid solutions.4 More gold and copper were soluble in iron at 1125°C than at 950°C as indicated by a 0.012A increase in the bcc lattice parameter for a sample quenched from 1125°C. After the alloy had been quenched from 950° and 1125°C, the bcc lattice parameters were 2.879 and 2.891A1 respectively G.P. zones having the cesium chloride structure-which formed during low-temperature aging—were detected by electron diffraction and observed with electron transmission microscopy. In Fig. 1, the asymmetrical streaks parallel to ( 100) directions indicate that platelike G.P. zones had formed parallel to (100) planes of the matrix. The direction of streak asymmetry shows that the bcc unit cell of the G.P. zones was larger than the bcc cell of the matrix. The ordered cesium chloride structure is indicated by low-intensity superlattice spots at 010 positions which are nonallowed for bcc structures. The superlattice spots are streaked; therefore they are from the G.P. zones and are not caused by rel-rod effects of a thin matrix phase. The appearance and size of the zones observed in electron transmission microscopy and the appearance of the asymmetrical streaks in the electron diffraction patterns for the Fe-Au-Cu alloy were the same as those observed for a similarly treated Fe-Au alloy.' This paper will include a brief discussion of Prof. Howe's paper on The Supposed Reversal of Inheritance of Ferrite Grain Size from that of Austenite.l The general subject of grain refining in steel and iron will also be treated. The conclusions reached are stated in the following hypotheses which are discussed more in detail below. 1. The ferrite grain size in pure iron, the ferrite and pearlite grain size in hypoeutectoid steel, the pearlite grain size in eutectoid steel and the cementite and pearlite grain size of hypereutectoid steel are not inherited from the grain size of the mother austenite. 2. The only structural feature that is generally inherited from the austenite of hypo- and hypereutectoid steels on cooling through their transformation ranges is the position of the excess ferrite or cementite at the austenite grain boundaries, sometimes causing complete and sometimes incomplete networks which outline the old austenite grain boundaries. Rapid cooling through the transformation range will cause the non-inheritance of this structural (network) feature. 3. The austenite grain boundaries themselves are nearly always effaced in all steels and also in pure iron during the At transformations. 4. The grain-size refining of steel and iron is brought about by the combined effect of non-inheritance of the transformation products on either heating or cooling, i.e., the austenite transformation products do cst inherit their grain size from the austenite on cooling through the transformation range nor does austenite inherit its grain size from the products which form austenite on heating. 5. In general, in both iron and carbon steel the larger the austenite grain size, the larger will be the grain size of the transformation products on cooling. This, of course, assumes all other conditions constant except the austenite grain size. An exception is found to this general rule in very pure iron such as electrolytic iron. In this instance small austenite grains may form very large ferrite grains on cooling through Arg.

The occurrence of zircon in pegmatites of acidic composition is recorded by many observers both in this country and abroad, and they form one of the most important geologic modes of occurrence of the minera1. As is well known, commercially the most important American locality for zircon is near Zirconia in Henderson County, North Carolina, where many tons of the mineral have been obtained from a kaolinized pegmatite dike 100 ft. wide and traced for 1 1/2 miles along the direction of strike N. 50" E. Zircon may be developed in pegmatites as inclusions in the principal rock-forming minerals, chiefly quartz and feldspar, and as a separate megascopic constituent in the form of grains and crystals not exceeding, as a rule, 2 in. in size, and usually smaller. In the Henderson County, North Carolina, pegmatite, zircon occurs in prismatic crystals with pyramidal terminations measuring up to 30 mm. in diameter, associated chiefly with the feldspar. In some of the apatite veins of Canada, which are closely allied to pogmatite dikes, zircon is reported in crystals upward of 6 in. in length and 2 in. and more in thickness. Zircon in large masses occurs in Virginia in the well-known pegmatites near Amelia in Amelia County, and near Gouldin in Hanover County. Both localities are in the middle eastern portion of the Piedmont Plateau province, and are separated by a distance of about 40 miles in a northeast-southwest direction. The rocks of both areas, including the pegmatite bodies, are in an advanced stage of decay, and the hard and moderately fresh rocks are concealed beneath a cover of variable thickness of rock decay derived by the normal processes of weathering. The objective of this program was to conduct dust surveys at six longwall sections having double-drum shearers, that were regularly in compliance, and to identify the dust control techniques that were the most effective. As each of the mines selected had a record of regular compliance with the Federal Dust Standard, all sampling was "short-term" (often less than 30 minutes) and no attempt was made to relate the survey results to dust-sampling results obtained by the companies for compliance purposes. The sampling procedures (1) used during this survey were developed jointly by the Bureau of Mines and Foster-Miller Associates, Inc. In addition to monitoring dust levels, measurements were also taken throughout the shift to monitor airflow along the face and water usage on the shearer. This program was a cooperative effort of the Bureau of Mines and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). RESULTS CUTTING SEQUENCE - WORK LOCATION At all mines surveyed, an important factor in controlling dust exposure at the shearer is the design of the cutting sequence so as to allow the shearer operator to work most of the time on the intake-air side of the lead drum. It is generally accepted that most of the dust generated by a double-drum shearer comes from the lead drum, which in the raised position normally takes a full sump. Because the position of the drum that is in the raised position determines the horizon control, the operator must be close enough to carefully monitor its operation. Therefore, his position relative to the lead drum has a significant effect on his dust exposure. Dust profiles, such as those constructed from data collected at Mines A and B (Figure 1), show the large gradient in dust concentrations that can exist between the intake and return air side of the lead drum. When the primary cut is taken head to tail, the lead drum is downwind and dust levels can be maintained at a low level until air has passed the shearer (Mine A). Thus, shearer operators can stay in relatively uncontaminated air. When the primary cut is taken tail to head, the lead drum is upwind of the shearer controls, resulting in higher dust concentrations at the shearer operator's work location (Mine B). At the mines where this cutting sequence was used, it was company policy for the shearer operators to walk on the intake side of the lead drum, returning to the controls only to adjust the height of the lead drum. DIRECTED WATER SPRAYS AND PASSIVE BARRIERS It is not always possible to keep the shearer operator on the intake air side of the lead drum. Various techniques have been tried to keep the dust generated by the shearer away from the machine operators when they work adjacent to the shearer. At all mines visited, the external water spray nozzles were directed so that dust from the shearer was directed downwind and toward the face, and away from the shearer operators. The effectiveness of using external water sprays to keep dusty air close to the face was noted during Bureau of Mines efforts to develop improved water spray systems (2). Laboratory and underground tests showed that water sprays located properly and directed downwind can create aiflow patterns that move dust generated by the shearer toward the face and away from the shearer operators. Sprays directed upwind, into the airflow, can actually move dust away from the face

Introduction Historically, the presence of methane has been a problem, mainly in and around the working areas of active coal mines, and only in these areas has drainage been considered. Drainage, where practical, has been achieved through the drilling of holes forward into the coal and the surrounding strata from the working area. These holes generaly have been short in length, although where methane drainage operations around a longwall face have been undertaken, the holes have had to be longer in order to adequately drain from the center of the face into the access gate roads. In recent years, attempts have been made to degasify the coal seams in advance of mining, without disruption of the mining cycle. This is done by drilling much longer horizontal holes through the coal in advance of the working area. Under the aegis of the federal government, methods have also been developed for draining coal seams of their methane content in advance of mining, but from shafts sunk from the surface, without using the active area of the mine as the location for the drill holes. Development of methane drainage has recently been encouraged by the potential use of the drained methane as a commercial energy source, with a need, therefore, to adequately organize a collection system, separate from mining the seam for coal. This has already been successfully accomplished, for example, in the Federal No. 2 mine of Eastern Associated Coal Corp. starting in 1975 (Johns). However, whether the system gains access to the coal through horizontal drilling from a pre- existing mine or via access through a separate shaft from the surface, long horizontal holes are required to adequately tap the methane reserve. It is to this regard-the actual drilling of the horizontal holes-that this paper is directed. It will examine potential benefits that may accrue, both in conventional horizontal hole drilling from a mine site underground, and also in drilling from the surface if a high pressure water jet drill is used to drill the degasification holes. Long Hole Drilling from an Underground Site Personnel from the Bureau of Mines have recently examined methods for conventional drilling of long horizontal holes to gain access for methane drainage. They have shown that it is possible (Cervik, Fields, and Aul) to drill out some 610 m using a conventional drilling system. Three types of bit were used in the program and by alternating between a drag bit, tricone bit, and plug bit, advance rates of between 0.6-3.6 m/min were achieved. Hole diameters varied from 7.6-9.2 cm in surface tests at bit thrusts of 1360 kg. A hole was then drilled and maintained in relative alignment within the coal seam for a distance of 640 m. Thrust levels had to be lowered to between 363-680 kg across the bit. Because the loads were smaller than those used in the surface trial, advance rates in the hole were of the order of 10-38 cm/min. The thrust level was lowered since it was found that the level of the thrust controlled the inclination of the drill so that, for example, a thrust of 363 kg caused the hole to incline downward, while at greater than 544 kg the hole inclined upward with the 9-cm-diam bit. Thrust levels increased 227 kg when the hole diameter was raised to 9.2 cm, although in such a case penetration rates in excess of 56 cm/min could be achieved. Horizontal Water Jet Drilling of Coal The University of Missouri-Rolla has recently undertaken research for Sandia Laboratories on the use of high pressure water jets as a means of drilling through coal. The initial experiment in this program called for drilling a hole horizontally into a coal seam from the side of a strip pit using water jets as the cutting mechanism. A very simple setup [(Fig. 1)] was used in this program and a 15-m hole was drilled at an approximate drilling speed of 1.2 m/min. The nozzle was designed so that the hole dimension was approximately 15 cm across [(Fig 2)] and the thrust was maintained at levels below 91 kg in moving the drill into the coal face. The system used was very crude and comprised a high pressure water jet drill enclosed within a 5.7-cm outer diameter galvanized water pipe to provide rigidity to the drilling system. This pipe sufficed to maintain hole alignment over the 15-m increment. While it is premature to make long-term predictions on ultimate applicability of this sytem to long hole drilling, certain inherent advantages of water jets can be delineated from research results and suggest considerable advantage to further research in development of this application. High pressure water was supplied at approximately 62 046 kPa from a 112-kW high pressure pump, with a 83 L/m flow through the supply line to the nozzle. The drilling system consisted of a nozzle rigidly attached to the front end of the galvanized piping. The effects of sulfur (up to 0.1 pet) on the deformation and fracture characteristics of iron, in cast form, were studied at strain rates up to 100 pct pcr sec and at temperatures of 1600o to -3300 oF. The effects of oxygen and manganese additions on the behavior of Fe-S alloys were studied under comparable test conditions. Brittle fracture characteristics, evident at all strain rates, resulted from the presence of the liquid iron sulfide phase at grain boundaries. Ductility could be restored in three ways: solution of the sulfide in solid y iron at higher temperatures, spheroid-zzation of the liquid sulfide, and increase. in the melting point ot the sulfide. THE literature shows that most previous studies of deformation and fracture at hot working temperatures have been based on measurements of energy absorption, reduction of height in forging upset tests, torsion tests of bar or wire samples, and so forth,' but that relatively few tension tests have been used at high temperatures and strain rates. The present work was initiated to study the ef- fects of temperature, strain rate, composition, and structure on the deformation and fracture characteristics of iron, utilizing cast specimens tested in tension. As in a previous study,' strain rates up to 100 pct per sec were chosen for the temperature range 1600° to 2400° to provide data which might be useful in the interpretation of the deformation and fracture behavior of steels under hot working conditions. The previous work was with Fe-P solid solution al10ys;2 this work is concerned with Fe-S alloys, and with the effects of oxygen and manganese additions. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Cast tes! specimens were employed throughout, since most of the difficulty during hot working occurs in the initial breakdown of the ingot. Alloy Systems. Ten 25 lb. heats containing sulphur were prepared. Of these, three had manganese additions, and two had oxygen additions. The sulfur content varied from 0.023 to 0.10 pct. Manganese contents were intended to be ten to twenty times the sulfur content of the particular alloy. Oxygen, being more difficult to control in small melts, was varied by the amount of solid deoxidizer added, but poor control of the oxygen content was experienced in most instances. Table I shows the chemical analyses of the heats. Melting and Casting. Electrolytic-iron chips were melted by high frequency induction in a prefired, clay-graphite crucible lined with rammed magnesite.

Advances in instrumentation now make it possible to measure accurately flaw of such difficult-to-mea-sure liquids as mining slurries. A mass flowmeter, which introduces no restrictions in the line, will measure the mass flow of slurry equal to the volume flow times the mms/unit volume. In the mass flowmeter system a volume flow measurement is electrically multiplied by a density measurement in order to give mass flow. Fig. 1 shows a typical mass flow measuring system. The volume flow is measured by a magnetic flowmeter and the density is measured by a gamma gauge cell, neither of which have any restrictions in the line. Consequently, there is no clogging and no more loss of head than there would be in a similm length of standard pipe. None of the parts extend into the flowing stream and there are no moving parts in the measuring elements. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF THE VOLUME FLOW TRANSMITTER The magnetic flowmeter, which is used for the volume measurement, operates on the principle of a generator (Fig. 2). This principle states that when a moving conductor cuts lines of force in a magnetic field, a voltage is induced in it. Moreover, if the dimensions of the conductor remain constant, then the induced voltage is directly proportional to the velocity of the conductor. Since the voltage is strictly a function of flow velocity, the transmitter output can in no way be influenced by such factors as temperature, viscosity, turbulence, or conductivity. The linear output is detected by flush mounted electrodes (as shown) and transmitted to a potentiometer flow receiver. Magnetic Meter Construction: The metering tube is constructed of nonmagnetic stainless steel. (See Fig. 3.) To prevent shortcircuiting of the generated voltage, the tubes are lined with a suitable liner, depending upon the corrosive, erosive or other properties of the liquid or slurry to be measured. A uniform magnetic field is produced by two saddle-shaped coils of insulated copper wire. A laminated iron core focuses the magnetic field at a 90' angle to the flowing liquid. The voltage generated by a flow of liquid through the magnetic field is detected by two point electrodes mounted flush with the inner wall of the metering tube, 180' apart. Electrodes are made of Type-316 stainless steel or other material suitable to the application . Volume Flowmeter Operation: The millivolt output of the metering transmitter is transmitted to a potentiometer-type receiver (Fig. 4). The self-balancing, self-standardizing receiver has a drive unit for circuit rebalancing. The measurement change imposes an unbalanced input on the twin windings of the drive unit. The resulting unequal pull on a segmental rotor provides the motion which drives a pen, while simultaneously and steplessly repositioning a rebalancing element. Changes in conductivity have no effect on the accuracy of the measurement or the calibration of the instrument. The minimum conductivity values are determined by the length of the transmission cable and the size of the transmitter. They can be as low as five micro mhos, since there is such a small load on the electrodes. Because the meter electrically averages all of the incremental velocities in an irregular flow profile, it is ideally suited for turbulent flow and suspended solids. The production for 1941 declined 9.2 per cent from the previous year's total of 147,647,000 bbl. Daily average production for 1941 was 366,000 bbl. At the beginning of the year daily production was slightly more than 326,000 bbl. and it remained at appoximately that amount until June, when there was a slight increase. The increase continued until the peak of 431,260 bbl. daily was reached for the week ending Oct. 4. Daily average production at the end of the year was approximately 387,500 barrels. The increased production during the last half of 1941 was largely due to the rapid development of the Johnsonville field, Wayne County, the Rural Hill field, Hamilton County, and the Benton field, Franklin County—new fields discovered in the current year (Fig' 1)—and the Woodlawn pool, discovered in 1940. Discoveries In 19 counties in southern Illinois, 44 new fields were discovered in 1941 (Fig. 2 and Table 2), and extensions to 40 fields were successfully completed (Table 3). At the end of the year there were 10,496 wells in the fields discovered since Jan. I, '937, as compared with 71965 wells at the end Of '940. The area proved for production in the new fields increased from 78,040 acres at the beginning of 1941 to 97,483 acres at the end of the year (Table I)—an increase of 19,433 acres, of which 9,955 acres are in the fields discovered during the current year, and the remainder of 9,478 acres in extensions to pools discovered earlier. Drilling During the past year, 3838 wells were completed in Illinois (Table 4), of which 2912 were oil producers, 13 were gas producers and 913 were dry holes; 76 per cent of the wells drilled were producers. Of the total number drilled, 591 wells are classified as "wildcat" and of these 84 (1 in 7) were successful in obtaining production. The results of an investigation to ascer-tain the reason for the locations of the wildcat wells are set forth in Table 5. Of the 591 wildcat wells, the 292 known to have been located by scientific methods were 21.6 per cent successful. The total footage of wildcat wells drilled in 1941 was 1,341,743 ft., of which a total of 216,995 ft. was drilled in successful wells. Exploration MEthods Subsurface geology and geophysics, largely the reflection seismograph, are still the principal methods used in exploration and development in the state. The number of seismograph parties operating throughout the year was as follows: seven parties on Jan. I, 1941; five on Apr. I; four On July I; eight on Oct. I; fifteen on Jan. 1: 1942.

The oil and gas fields of Michigan that have been under development since 1925 are in an area that extends across the middle of the lower peninsula from northeast to southwest, a distance of about 200 miles, and with a width of about 80 miles. In 19 years 70 fields have been discovered. Most of these are relatively small when compared with other oil-producing areas. This is borne out by the fact that since the first wells were drilled these fields have produced a total of only 204,000,000 bbl. However, Michigan is still maintaining its production, for during the past five years the annual production has remained fairly constant at approximately 20,000,000 bbl. Production for 1943, as reported by the Bureau of Mines, was 20,682,000 barrels. Roughly, one third oi Michigan's production in 1943 came from the Reed City field, which was discovered in 1941. During the year, 237 oil wells were completed in Michigan in 1943. The decrease of 56 from the 1942 total is probably due to the continuance of Government regulations requiring a 40-acre spacing pattern over most of the state. Fig. I shows the principal oil and gas fields of Michigan, and the columnar section, Fig. 2, shows the principal producing horizons in relation to the section drilled. The data of Table I and Table 2 have been carefully checked with previous reports to eliminate errors. Six new producing areas were discovered during 1943 and five areas discovered in 1942 were developed during the year. Both the new discoveries and the 1942 discoveries that were developed appear to be small and relatively unimportant. Goodwell Field.—The best discovery of the year is the Goodwell field, T. 14 N., R. 11 W., Goodwell township, Newaygo County. This small structure was located by core testing done by The Pure Oil Co. in 1942 and early 1943. The first producing well, C. R. Harris No. I, was completed on July 5, 1943, ill the Traverse limestone at a total depth of 2742 ft., with ail estimated potential of 1100 bbl. per day. By the end of the year, 18 wells had been completed in this field and approximately 281,000 bbl. of oil produced. The field operated under proration of 262 bbl. per day per well from Oct. I to Dec. I; 150 bbl. per day per well after that date. Woodville Field.—The small Woodville pool, T. 15 N., R. 11 W., 3 miles north of the Goodwell field, was discovered by core testing by the Ohio Oil Co. The discovery well was completed on May 5, 1943, flowing 650 bbl. of fluid, including 18 per cent salt water the first 18 hr., from the Traverse limestone at a depth of 2810 to 2815 ft. Seven wells had been completed by the end of the year and 67,000 bbl. of oil had been produced. Development is now practically at a standstill because further drilling does not aDDear economically iustified.

ALTHOUGH valuable information has been pub-lished on the important problems of slag losses with which every copper metallurgist has to contend, a great deal of money is still being wasted in copper smelters all over the world, through metal being irretrievably lost in reverberatory slags. When smelting a relatively low-grade pyritic concentrate together with a proportion of direct-smelting oxi- dized ore, as is done in Oroya, slag volumes are of necessity high, and even a relatively clean slag, say of 0.5 pct Cu, means a loss of almost 4 pct of all the copper charged, or over $1,000,000 annually at present output and prices. While it is known that such losses can often be reduced by allowing the slag time to settle, with or without addition of a reducing agent such as coal or pyrite, the facilities for such treatment are not always available in a plant of old design working to capacity under severe space limitations. Nor is it easy under such conditions to run large scale tests which may endanger the smooth flow of production for considerable periods without yielding
