The late Professor P. B. Bucky of Columbia University introduced the principles and techniques of barodynamic experimentation in early 1931 by the application of centrifugal loading to achieve dynamic similitude between models and prototypes of mine structures.1 Later, he and his associates introduced the combined experimental technique of photo- elasticity and the centrifuge to determine the stress distribution in civil engineering structures and mine workings by the use of transparent bakelite models.2,3 The photostress technique, also known as the birefringent-coating method of photoelastic stress analysis, dates back to 1930, when Mesnager published its principles.4 Since then it has been widely applied to experimental stress analyses in many industries. A practical method of observing the dynamic behavior of opaque mine models, which are made of prototype materials, by means of a combination of the centrifugal and the photostress techniques is a new experimental approach under development at the Henry Krumb School of Mines, Columbia University.5 This paper summarizes the development of the barodynamic photostress technique and presents the information obtained from a recent series of experiments in the study of the behavior of rock beams loaded by their own weight. Historically, rock deposits and sand deposits of titanium minerals came into production about the same time, although there may be some argument as to what is meant by production. Beach de- posits of heavy minerals in India (Figs. 1-4) and Brazil (Figs. 5) were worked for monazite about the turn of century, but as there was then no market for titanium minerals, these were thrown away. The rock rutile deposits at Roseland, Va., Fig. 6, were worked to supply rutile for titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics long before there was a titanium pigment business. The pigment industry started about the middle twenties, both in Europe and the U. S., and almost simultaneously the rock deposits at Ponte Vedra Beach near Jacksonville, Fla., were worked for titanium content. Since those days, production from both types of deposits has continued to grow at a rapid rate; many deposits of both types have been found, and reserves have grown to very large figures. In total tonnage of reserves, there is no doubt that the rock deposits are far ahead of the sand deposits; nevertheless there is a very large tonnage of commercial sands available. It is the quality of titanium mineral in the sand and the relatively lower costs of operating sand deposits that have kept them abreast, at least in annual tonnage produced, with the rock deposits.

When metals are subjected to mechanical working, such as rolling, one of the phenomena that take place is a movement of the crystals of the metal into a system or systems of orientation which bear an angular relation to the direction of working. In rolled metal the crystals may orient themselves with respect to the rolling plane or the rolling direction, or both. Direct evidence of the existence of preferred orientations in rolled metal has been obtained by numerous investigators from X-ray patterns of the rolled metal. Most of these workers used a monochromatic pinhole method. Where the degree of preference for a single orientation is high the monochromatic pinhole pattern may be interpreted by a geometrical calculation based on the angular relationships of the planes in the crystal and the diffraction arcs on the X-ray pattern. This process may be aided by the geometrical construction of the locus sphere (Lagenkugel), and reflection circles of Polanyi,l Polanyi and Weissenberg,2 and Mark and Weissenberg,3 and of the plane polar figures (flachenpolfigur) of Franz Wever.4 R. M. Bozorth5 solves X-ray patterns from metals having a single preferred orientation by means of a series of charts which when placed over the X-ray pattern give directly certain angular relationships, between the crystal planes and the surface of the specimen.

MORE years ago than I care to admit I conferred the title of "combustion engineer? upon my-self since nobody else would confer it. I thought at the time, and for some, years thereafter, that my field was limited to the precincts where the fuel was being burned, but I found that I could stand in the door of the furnace room and hear distressed heat units calling for help all over the plant. Some of them were over-worked, others were compelled to do useless work, and still others, anxious to render a proper account of themselves, were not permitted to do any sort of work at all and were utterly wasted. The combustion engineer has something to do at that interesting occasion when the heat unit is being born in the furnace, but his responsibility does not end there. He must follow the little fellow throughout the entire period of its hectic existence in the plant and see that it gets a fair chance and a square deal everywhere. I fear that the general impression of the combustion engineer's duties is much as mine was in the beginning; that his job is limited to the implements and processes incident to the specific operation of converting fuel into active, heat energy and of applying it to the boiler, the still, or what-not, with the least possible waste. But is it not true that a heat unit saved in a remote corner of the plant means just as much to the fuel account as another saved at the furnace? And if nobody else is looking after the heat units out on the range why should the combustion engineer spend all of his time hanging around the corral? If combustion engineer is not a broad enough title to cover the man in charge of a general heat unit rescue campaign call him any-thing else you please. The job is all that counts. The name means nothing. A skunk by any other name would smell as bad. The greatest field I have ever found for general "heat rescue" work is the oil refinery. In refining we first put heat into the oil and then take it away from the vapor. The greatest heat losses occur during the cooling operation, but there are losses, many of them preventable, either wholly or partly, at every step of the several processes in oil refining.

Addition of oil to a suspension of hydrophobic coal particles can influence its dewatering characteristics. An agglomeration process occurs in which coal particles are held together by negative capillary pressure at particle/oil/water contacts. Consequently, the units round which flow can occur are enlarged and this improves dewatering parameters such as drainage rate, solids recovery, and equilibrium moisture content. This paper discusses processes which attempt to use this principle, in terms of metallurgical and economic efficiency. The discussion is augmented by results of recent experiments on the effect of oil addition to centrifuges and vacuum filters.

JESSE SCOBEY The task of the committee since Oct. 17, 1918, has been to stimulate and foster interest in the work of the Dispensary in France, to aid and further the work, and to that end has centered on the inauguration of an "Engineers' " day, once a week, at the headquarters of the American Fund for French Wounded, where members of the Auxiliary might join in sewing for this "Dispensary of the New York Section of the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E.," recently established at Briey, France. Letters and pledge forms asking for workers were sent to all members of the Auxiliary in New York City and vicinity, and a most gratifying response has assured the success of the undertaking. The meetings in December, pending the completion of better working facilities at Fund headquarters, were held at the home of Miss Madeline P. Stone, to whom the committee extends its grateful thanks for her hospitality large, well-equipped room at Fund headquarters has now been assigned to the committee for Tuesday of each week, from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m., with Mrs. Percy E. Barbour of the committee as director of work room. All members of the Auxiliary and others whose interests are with the mining profession will be welcome on "Engineers'" day-Tuesdays-at 73 Park Ave.

Where Does the Mine Dollar Go? THIS paper gives a brief account of the geologic and production problems encountered in the Grass Creek oil field, the methods used in their solution, and the beneficial results obtained from the work. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance received from J. H. Pearson and Miss Ninettta A. Davis in the collection of the data and the preparation of the cross-sections. Permission for its publication was given by the officials of the Midwest Refining Co. and the Ohio Oil Co. The Grass Creek oil field is located in Ts. 98-99 W., R. 46 N., Hot Springs County, Wyo. The productive area includes about 2 1/2 mi. (4 km.) on the apex of a great anticlinal fold occupying more than 150 sq. mi. Fig. 1 shows the structural contours of the field. Oil was dicovered in the field in June, 1914; development proceeded rapidly and production rose to a maximum in 1918. The marketed production has been approximately as follows: BARRELS BARRELS 1915 94,073.5 1918 2,946,774.27 1916 1,404,183.97 1919 2,000,584.84 1917 2,780,697.51 1920 1,485,080.94 About 350 wells, 800 to 1500 ft. lHE general constitution of a number of metal-lead telluride and metal-tin telluride systems has recently been studied in an effort designed to furnish background information for the study of degradation mechanisms on junctions between thermoelectric power generation materials and metals.1"4 This paper reports further results of that effort. It was found that cobalt-lead telluride constitutes a stable pseudobinary section through the ternary Co-Pb-Te system. Materials used in the study were lead and tellurium of semiconductor-grade purity (American Smelting and Refining Corp., 99.999+ pet). Cobalt (Johnson Matthey & Co., 99.999 pet purity) was used in the form of slices cut from rods of 5 mm diam. Twenty- gram charges of the alloys were melted in evacuated quartz ampoules. Thermal analysis, as described previously,2'3 and metallographic and X-ray diffraction methods (Debye-Scherrer photographs) were used as investigative tools. Substantial difficulties were encountered in polishing, as reported previously for the lead telluride-iron system.3 A number of different etches were used, including dilute aqua regia, Murakami solution, an etch containing copper nitrate,3 and HC1-HNO3-acetic acid-water mixtures. THE Telluride mining district of southwestern Colorado is defined by the 37° 45' and 38° parallels of latitude and 107° 45' and 108° meridians of longitude. Telluride was never a boom camp, but has had a steady growth. In recent years, notwithstanding the business depression of 1920, the business has been the same as in normal years. The first prospector is said to have appeared in 1875, in which year locations on the Smuggler vein were made. Shipments were made in 1877 and 1878, and in 1879 milling the ores was attempted. While the district produced high-grade ores, it did not become important until 1890, when the Rio Grande Southern R. R. was completed from Ridgway to Telluride. The railroad has since been extended to Durango. In the fall of 1896, 400 stamps were in operation, and the annual production was $3,000,000.00, two-thirds of which was gold. The total production from 1875 to 1923 was: Gold $58,274,527; silver 41,830,920 oz., valued at $31,016,893; copper 15,258,866 lb., valued at $2,533,291; lead 166,056,484 lb., valued at $8,324,910; zinc 18,141,182 lb. valued at $1,323,787; or a total production of $101,473,408. All: claims are held in fee. Most of them are 1500 by 300 ft. but claims located within the last few years are 1500 by 600 ft. General supplies are obtained at Telluride, Denver, and Salt Lake. The largest mines are within 6 miles of the town of Telluride. Denver is 422 miles and Salt Lake is 439 miles, by rail, from Telluride. One-half of the distance to Denver and one-sixth of the distance from Telluride to Salt Lake is by narrow-gage railroad. The labor is efficient. The best miners are Italians and Austrians, then Slavs, Greeks, and Mexicans follow in the order mentioned. There are no labor unions. There are no serious mine pumping problems, the drainage being through adits. The Tomboy and Smuggler companies pump water from their reservoirs, the former for, milling and domestic purposes and the latter for milling, power, and domestic purposes.

A corrosion-testing apparatus which operates in the field and which will determine the comparative resistance of various ferrous materials to corrosion by gaseous hydrogen sulfide at ordinary temperatures is described. The principle of the uniform method of testing is to allow natural gas containing hydrogen sulfide, direct from its source in the field, to flow over the group of specimens for a given period of time, and subsequently to estimate the corrosion sustained by each specimen by determining its loss in weight. The comparative results obtained when specimens of 47 representative ferrous materials of described typical composition \\ere tested at ordinary temperatures with natural gas containing hydrogen sulfide are given in tables showing average penetration of metal, Inches per year. The primary purpose of the work Mas to determine the possible utllity to the petroleum and natural gas industries of ferrous materials that are commercially available, and no attempt is made to discuss the results of the tests from the metallurgical standpoint. The following is a summary of the results obtained: 1. Steels containing 12 to 27 per cent of chromium showed the highest resistance to corrosion. The presence of nickel In these high-chromium steels did not affect their resistance. 2. Steels containing approximately 5 per cent of chromium showed comparatively high resistance, but somewhat less than that of the high-chromium steels.

The peninsula of Nicoya contains virtually all of the known manganese deposits of Costa Rica. These are south and west of the Tempisque River, which flows across the peninsula near its juncture with the mainland. This peninsula forms the westernmost part of the province of Guana-caste, which is the northern. of the two Pacific Coast provinces of Costa Rica. The larger villages are connected by ox-cart roads and trails. The area may be covered on horseback without difficulty except during the rainy season, when rivers are in flood and difficult to ford. This is particularly true of the Rio Seco-Guay-jiniquil area, where there are no inhabitants and few open trails through the tropical jungle. Santa Cruz and Sardinal are served by the Taca Airlines, two planes a week from San Jose and Puntarenas. The port of Puntarenas has excellent loading facilities but none are available nearer the manganese districts; there ore must be lightered to vessels standing offshore. Physiography In Costa Rica there are three physiographic divisions: (I) the central plateau (Mesa Central), a somewhat dissected lava platform upon which are superimposed volcanic peaks, some of which are still active; (2) the Atlantic lowlands and (3) the Pacific lowlands. The peninsula of Nicoya and the larger part of the province of Guanacaste lie within the Pacific low- lands. The term "lowland" indicates relation to the central plateau, as the peninsula of Nicoya is largely mountainous. The mountains of Nicoya form the southern extremity of a range of low hills, which are almost continuous along the Costa Rican coast to the Nicaraguan border. The coast line shows evidence of subsidence. The Gulf of Nicoya obviously is the drowned valley of the Tempisque River. The west coast of Nicoya shows many rocks, shoals, bays, inlets and small islands as evidence of a sea encroachment. The altitude of the manganese deposits ranges from 0 to 800 ft. Topography is of the mature type of wide valleys and low hills, often with abrupt slopes. The climate is tropical and humid; rainfall of 125 in. falls largely between Sept. I and Jan. I. Vegetation often is very dense, the Rio Seco-Guayjiniquil area being truly tropical jungle, containing many hardwoods. History and Production The production of manganese ore in Costa Rica apparently dates from the first World War. It reached a peak of about 10,000 tons in the year 1919, then declined rapidly. Evidence of this period of prospecting has rotted away or been swallowed by the jungle. The war now in progress apparently revived the interest in Costa Rican manganese and has encouraged further prospecting. PRIOR to 1936, the Ontario Refining Co. received all incoming blister copper from The International Nickel Company's smelter in the usual form of 460-lb. cakes, or slabs. These were received in open cars in lots of 250 pieces. At the refinery the cakes were unloaded onto narrow-gauge cars, for convenient handling and pickup by charging cranes. In March 1936, an investigation was started on the feasibility of trans-ferring converter copper in the molten state from the smelter to the refinery anode furnaces, a distance of 114 miles. Although common in steel practice, the transportation of blister copper in this form had not previously been attempted and a preliminary study of the various factors involved was therefore necessary. For this purpose, a series of experiments was made in which molten copper, removed at different stages during the furnace cycle, was held in a small portable holding furnace. This vessel was essentially a refractory-lined steel cylinder provided with ports for filling and emptying, heated by an oil burner. Dimensions of the steel shell were 3 ft. 10 in. diameter by 7 ft. 3 in. long, and thickness of refractories depended oil the design and combination used for the particular experiment. The vessel was filled with approximately 2 ½ tons of copper at a predetermined temperature, the lining having been preheated to a definite point by means of an oil burner. All openings were well luted and temperature readings were made every 15 min. by means of an immersion-type thermocouple. In this manner the rate of heat loss resulting with different refractory design could be developed. The ratio of exterior surface to weight of metal was taken into consideration in comparing the experimental results with what might be expected for a full-sized unit, and observations were also made on type and degree of slag accretion. It was not possible to get as much information on this latter point as desirable, but all evidence showed that the problem would be control of slag build-up rather than attack oil refractories.

N. Dorr, Chairman, Percy G. Beckett, J. W. Hutchinson, Julian Kennedy, William H. Linney, Charles W. Merrill, and E. Gybbon Spilsbury. The question of the purchase of Liberty Bonds, as well as that of bringing to the attention of the members the advisability of the purchase of these bonds, was referred to the Finance Committee. Sixty Members, four Associates, and thirty-six Junior Members were elected. Two Members were reinstated. Eight resignations were accepted.

Modern vibrating screening dates from about 1910 at which time the forerunner of the present day two bearing and four bearing circular motion inclined vibrating screens were first introduced. These simple machines consisted of a screen box holding some kind of a screening surface to which was attached an off-center shaft or a shaft with an off-center weight which was rotated. The rotation of these shafts caused a shivering motion to the screen box and produced the first vibrating screen. In the 1920's and early 30's, the box designs were improved and the mechanisms designs were also improved and by 1940, vibrating screens were an important part of most process plants. In the early days when the screen sizes were dictated by how much could be shoveled onto the screen box and by the force that a particular mechanism could produce, not much thought was given to the proper sizing of the particular units. As mechanism and body design improved the ability to predict vibrating screen capacity at various openings became more important. In the late 1930's, a set of empirical capacities came to be used. with few modifications, these capacities are still in use today, both by those companies that use a formula involving only the amount of fine material in a feed, and by those companies using a formula in which the total feed to a particular screen is used. In either method of calculation, the empirical values are based on these ideal conditions: (1) The material being fed to the screen contains 25% oversize. (2) The feed to the screen contains 40% half size material. (3) The material has a bulk density of 1.6 T/Cu.M. (100 lbs/cu.ft.). (4) The screening surface has an open area of 50%. (5) The material is dry, free flowing and relatively cubical. (6) The maximum screening efficiency required is between 90 and 95%. It is obvious that these conditions do not occur in natural or crushed size distributions. Therefore, modifications must be made to these empirical values to allow for the calculation of a vibrating screen for a particular set of conditions. IN recent interesting papers,1,2 Bardos et al. have described ternary Laves phases of the type A2(BsSi) and A4(B5Si3) where A = titanium vanadium, niobium, and so forth, and B = manganese, iron, cobalt, or nickel; other more complex formulae have also been established. In these phases, silicon plays the part of the smaller B atom of a Laves phase AB2, and the interatomic distances show that the effec- tive silicon radii lie between 1.16 and 1.21Å, and are thus very much smaller than the metallic radius of silicon for CN = 12. It does not seem to have been pointed out that these small atomic radii are almost the sape as the normal covalent radius of silicon (1.174Å). If, therefore, silicon acts as an acceptor of electrons as suggested by Bardos et al.,1 it appears to do so, not by the building up of a negatively charged silicon ion which would be large, but by the formation of what are very nearly or may be actually normal covalent bonds. Since a covalent bond contains two electrons, its formation would reduce the number of electrons available for bonding in other parts of the structure, and in this way the effect of silicon in stabilizing the o phase at high electron concentrations might be understood.

THE renewed interest in titanium, resulting from its increasing application as a structural material, has stimulated basic deformation studies on this metal. In the course of our work, we have developed a dislocation etchant and applied it to a perfection study of melt-grown single crystals as well as to a preliminary investigation of plastic deformation in titanium. The etchant, Keller's etch (21 cu cm HF, 64 cu cm HC1, 106 cu cm HNO3, and 160 cu cm H20), reveals the emergence of both grown-in and fresh dislocations on pure titanium and a-phase Ti-Al single crystals. Pits are produced only on surfaces within a few degrees of the basal plane; the more exactly parallel to a basal plane the surface is, the more distinct are the pits. The observed pit density, however, does not appear to depend on the surface orientation; the pits simul- taneously become less distinct as the misorientation from a basal plane increases. Etch times are short, a few seconds, for pure titanium; longer times are necessary for alloy crystals.

DURING the past 10 or 12 years very little information has been made generally available concerning the commercial possibilities of separating materials by means of static electricity; and yet during that same period important improvements have been made in various branches of the science of electricity, which, when taken together, and applied to electrostatic separation, have resulted in important improvements in that art as well. For example, much improvement has been made in high-voltage electrical equipment such as full-wave vacuum-tube rectification and improved mechanical rectification. Great strides have likewise been made in the development of insulators for high-voltage work, not only in the materials used but also in the design of the insulators themselves. Again, in another field, the development of air-conditioning equipment has improved the technique of controlling the surface condition, through drying or humidifying, of the various materials that are passed through the electrostatic separator. In many authoritative publications and textbooks, the electrostatic separation process is declared to require a balance far too sensitive for general commercial application. For example, one publication1 in the past has referred to an unfavorable effect on the process caused by varying atmospheric conditions such as humidity.
