Abstract-Statistical studies have been carried out on structural geological data collected across a large zone of roof failure 600 m (1968 ft) wide and at least 800 m (2642 ft) long in the Greta coal seam at Aberdare East Colliery. Two swarms of hundreds 2 of minor, normal faults with throws commonly between 3 and 300 mm in the room and pillar workings are broadly coincident with roof failure. The faults have been classified into dip slip and oblique and strike slip types. Roof conditions have been classified into good; troublesome with subclasses scaly, heavy, gutter falls and wide, flat-roofed falls; and severely failed with subclasses very heavy roof, gutter falls and dome falls. Troublesome conditions are defined as those in which the height of the fall is less than or equal to 0.3 m, and severely failed conditions as those in which the fall height is greater than 0.3 m. Comparison of faults, roof conditions and mining rate on a shift basis indicates that faults and roof failure are much more important than machine breakdowns in reducing mining rate. The effect of faults on roof conditions has been quantified using a concept called the "zone of influence, " a rectangular area around a fault in which the fault has potentially deleterious effects. The spatial comparison of fault "zones of influence" with areas of roof failure using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient shows that, while normal dip slip faults do not appear to be associated with roof failure, oblique slip and strike slip faults appear to be associated with roof classed as severely failed. The "zone of influence" of an oblique slip fault may extend up to 3 m on each side of it in the headings and up to 1.14 m in the cut-throughs. The fault "zone of influence" has geomechanical implications for the design of mine openings and possibly represents the maximum length of a cantilevered roof beam likely to fail during mining, owing to a fault. Roof conditions could possibly be predicted in blocks of virgin coal if the type of fault could be identified in oriented drill cores.

The Austrian plants at Donawitz and Linz were the first to blow steel with high purity oxygen. The paper shows how the process was developed and gives a survey of the results achieved to date. Compared with open hearth steel of equal quality, the obvious advantages of oxygen steel are the low investment and conversion costs. The nitrogen content of oxygen steel is not higher than that of good open hearth steel. Rimmed and killed steel products made by the oxygen process are superior to rimmed and killed steel products made by the best open hearth process. TWO new steel plants using the principle of making steel with high purity oxygen went into operation in Austria, one at Linz (Vereinigte oster-reichische Stahlwerke) in November 1952 and the other at Donawitz (dsterreichisch-Alpine Montan-gesellschaft) in May 1953. An estimated 330,000 metric tons were produced by the two plants in 1953, the first year of operation. In 1954 production by Austrian plants- using the high purity oxygen approach will be raised to 450,000 metric tons. This will be in addition to facilities in Huckingen (Man-nesmann A. G., Düsseldorf, Germany), those planned and under construction at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (Dominion Foundries and Steel, Ltd.), and elsewhere. It is expected that by 1955 a total capacity of one million tons of high purity oxygen steel will be available. At the close of the last century, because of increasing availability of scrap, open hearth steel production forged ahead at an ever increasing pace. This caused world steel production to rise faster than pig iron production and finally to overtake it. In 1911 65 million tons of steel were produced against 64 million tons of pig iron. World steel production was 209 million tons in 1951, while pig iron output was only 147 million tons. The 1951 breakdown for steel shows 118 million tons made from pig iron, while the balance, 91 million tons or 44 pct of the total tonnage of steel produced, was made from scrap. This increase in crude steel production on a basis of high scrap consumption led to the world market scrap shortage and soaring scrap prices. In the United States and other nations, production of converter steel has fallen far behind that of open hearth steel. The surplus of processing scrap, un-absorbable by converting mills and thus a welcome source for open hearth and electric melting shops in the past, together with regular scrap purchases, no longer can meet requirements of both open hearth and electric steel production in Europe. In addition, recent modification of the basic bessemer process, blowing with oxygenated blast, substantially raised the scrap capacity of these plants. Any further expansion of world steel production will necessitate utilization of self-containing processes in regard to scrap because of the shortage.

IN treating carnotite ores by carbonate leaching it is often necessary to subject the ore to a prior roast. Among the advantages that may result from roasting are: 1) improvement in settling and filtering characteristics of the ore; 2) destruction of carbonaceous impurities that would otherwise contaminate the leach solution and consume carbonate reagent; and 3) substantial increase in extraction of vanadium, which is usually low when the un-roasted ore is leached. Recovery of vanadium may be an important factor in processing carnotite ores, and the fact that vanadium is usually recovered in good yield by acid leaching has often been an economic advantage over results obtained with carbonate leaching. It has been found that response of an ore to carbonate leaching, following roasting, depends primarily on its composition and on the conditions of the prior roast treatment, particularly with regard to the roasting temperature, the atmosphere maintained above the charge during roasting and cooling, and the presence of certain reagents. These factors, especially the last, virtually determine the extractions of uranium and vanadium attainable by carbonate leaching, as well as the reagent consumption on leaching, whereas adjustment of the leaching conditions has only a limited influence. These variables were examined systematically to elucidate roasting and carbonate leaching of carnotite ores and to establish a treatment yielding high recoveries of both uranium and vanadium. Tests were conducted on samples of four different Colorado Plateau ores, described in Table I. Roasting Procedure: The roasting tests were conducted in an electrically heated furnace in which the temperature was controlled to +15oC. The ore (usually a 500-g charge) was ground to —100 mesh, mixed with the desired reagent, and spread in a silica tray to a bed depth of about 1/2 in. During the roast the charge was rabbled at intervals of 15 min. To provide free access of air the furnace was usually ventilated; however, in a few experiments a controlled atmosphere such as carbon dioxide or hydrogen was maintained above the charge. Leaching Procedure: The pulp, generally comprising 500 g of ore and a 2000-cc solution containing 80 g per liter of Na2CO3 and 20 g per liter of NaHCO3, was agitated in an autoclave at 120°C, under 30 psi O2. Samples were withdrawn periodically, and the solution and ore residue were analyzed. Under the conditions employed, maximum attainable extractions were generally achieved in 4

THE presence of tellurium in copper and, by inference, in copper alloys, has been considered seriously detrimental and has been avoided. In particular, very small amounts of tellurium have been found to produce red-shortness, although the effects on cold-working and ordinary physical and mechanical properties have not been known so definitely. References in the literature are few, but as long ago as 1881, Egleston1 reported that 0.083 per cent tellurium in fire-refined copper rendered the copper red-short and therefore worthless for hot-rolling. In hot-rolling copper cakes containing this amount of tellurium, he found that fine cracks appeared in the cakes on the first pass through the rolls, the cracks opening further in successive passes. When cold, the metal was said to be tough and malleable. A few years ago, during the course of an investigation in our laboratory on copper-base alloys, it was found that tellurium-bearing alloys could be machined much more freely than similar alloys not containing tellurium. The study was pursued further in this direction, and considerable data were obtained, which indicated that certain tellurium-bearing alloys might have properties of commercial interest. The work eventually led to patent protection,2 a wide range of tellurium-bearing copper-base alloys being covered. This article presents results obtained on the effect of tellurium on the. mechanical properties of three copper-base alloys: commercial bronze (90 Cu, 10 Zn), 1.5 per cent tin bronze (98.5 Cu, 1.5 Sn), and silicon bronze (96 Cu, 3Si, 1 Zn).

A DDITIONAL experimental data are presented in this note on a phenomenon which has been touched on but lightly in the literature. The common magnesium base rolling alloy (AZ31B) contains about 3 pet A1 and 1 pet Zn. When cold rolled, it hardens until it starts to break up in the rolls at 30 to 50 pet reduction. When it is heated after rolling to full hardness, it softens. However, other magnesium alloys have shown themselves capable of being cold rolled indefinitely, provided the ratio of roll diameter to starting gage is sufficiently high. As measured by the tensile test, these alloys actually soften when the reduction becomes large (60 to 90 pct). A subsequent heating at 300' to 500°F can produce hardening of this metal. Heating at higher temperatures (600' to 800°F) causes recrystalliza-tion and softening. Menzen' has shown that a magnesium base alloy can be cold rolled without intermediate anneals as much as 90 pet. The alloy studied, Mg-1.5 pet Mn, softened considerably between 20 and 90 pet reduction, as measured by tensile properties; a decrease in yield strength of 30 pet, and an increase in elongation from 3.2 to 16.7 pet (longitudinal direction of the sheet). However, Menzen gives no data on the reaction of this metal. to heating. Ansel and Betterton2 and Hurst and Hatch3 report a similar effect in Mg-1.5 pet Mn-0.1 pet Ca. Their data show an initial hardening, followed by softening. The former authors also show that the alloy softened by cold rolling will harden when heated at low temperatures, and that these effects are absent in Mg-3 pet Al-1 pet Zn. In the course of work4, 5 some years ago, the author observed similar effects with alloys containing cerium, thorium, or zirconium; but not with elements like aluminum, silver, or zinc. Table IA contains the results of an experiment which shows these effects rather well. A binary alloy with 0.3 pet total rare earths (Mischmetal* added) was rolled hot to 1/16 in. and then annealed to full softness by heating 30 min at 800°F. Rolling was continued at 1.5 pet per pass to 80 pet total reduction on 8 in. diam rolls. The metal was harder after 20 pet work than initially but, at 80 pet reduction, properties were back to their original values. Heating for 1 hr at 450°F produced about the same hardness whether the reduction was 20 or 80 pet. At intermediate reductions, the metal hardened, but not to as high values. Extensive cold rolling may also be carried out on metal hot rolled at temperatures sufficiently low to produce a semihard temper. Mg-0.6 pet Zr was rolled to 0.1 in. at 700° to 800°F, 30 pet per pass. As shown in Table IB, a further cold reduction of 85 pet, at 1.5 pet per pass, definitely softened the metal.

One of the well-known and important uses of the noble or precious metals has been for electrical contacts. In fact, the elements of this group, comprising gold, silver and the six platinum metals, have been called "noble" because of their ability to resist heat and corrosion, properties which were early found to be of importance in good contacts. Of these, platinum and its iridium alloys, palladium, and silver, have been extensively used. In recent years the electrical industry has been responsible for about one-eighth of the total consiimption of the platinum metals in the United States. Information is not available as to what part of this one-eighth has been used for contacts but it is certainly an important one. Substitutes for Platinum During the past 20 years a considerable number of contact alloys have been proposed in the patent literature largely with the aim of more or less replacing platinum by gold or silver, and some of these alloys are finding increasingly widespread application as the reliability of their performance becomes established. From even the partial data at hand it appears that this substitution by the less precious metals has replaced at least one-half of the amount of platinum that the entire electrical industry would otherwise be consuming at the present time. While the subject is of considerable interest to the metallurgist it is even more so to the electrical engineer and it is surprising that the literature records no systematic and comprehensive investigation along these lines. Practically all the scattered work on noble metal contacts has centered around platinum as a standard and has had two more or less distinct aims. One of these has been the replacement of platinum by cheaper matcrials, and the other, the dcveloprnent of materials of superior electrical performance. The merit of a contact metal has been assumed to be dependent on its infusibility, and since thc more precious metals have the higher melting points there has naturally been an association of the two qualities in the sense that the more precious were

SAND and gravel are unconsolidated granular materials resulting from the natural disintegration of rocks. The two materials nearly al- ways occur together, variably proportioned in widely available de- posits. A commercial sand comprises the fine granular material, usually less than f in. in diameter (ASTM Designation C58-28), and gravel consists of the coarse, granular material larger than sand (ASTM Designation C125-46T). Gravel falls within the range of 1/4 in. and a top size usually of 3 ½ in. Chemical definition is impossible. Sand and gravel are always of secondary origin. They were formed from various massive rocks through the action of chemical and mechanical forces; then transported, abraded, washed, sorted, and classified by streams, glaciers, waves, or winds, to be redeposited in beds as they are found. Chief disintegrating forces in the reduction of rocks into granular particles were frost, rain, the dissolving action of acid and alkaline ground waters, the mechanical action of streams and waves, and the action of glaciers. Method of formation and deposition have imparted physical properties to sands and gravels that largely determine the commercial value of the materials for particular use and influence the manner of exploitation. In the early days of the commercial industry, purchasing specifications were relatively lenient but in. the past decade much more rigid quality requirements have had to be met for acceptance by all classes of purchasers. The trend to further severity in requirements is a challenge to the industry that commands full knowledge of the nature of raw materials at hand and skillful application of processing into commercial products. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM THE administration of industrial organization today embraces more than the cost of production and selling prices. Competition is deeper seated than mechanical devices, overhead charges, and a shrewd manipulation of the markets. Despite the "down-to-the-minute" equipment and the "last word in organization," it is quite evident that "capacity production" will be an unknown quantity until the workman is considered as a producer, in relation to his home, as he is now considered in relation to industry. Whether or not a man shall do an honest day's work is as much a psychological condition as it is a matter of physical strength or skill. His attitude toward his work each morning is determined, to a large degree, by the environment of his home. Whether this attitude, good or bad, obtains the day through will depend entirely upon the one fact as to whether the corporation which employs him does or does not differentiate between the mechanical factor and the human factor in industry. To be more specific, sociological work, under whatever name, should be of such a character as to influence the life of a workman in such a manner as to establish a cooperative interest in his work, foster within him a spirit of contentment in his home, lead him-so to employ his leisure time that he will not lower his efficiency as a workman, destroy his domestic happiness, or endanger his standing in the community as a citizen. While no fixed rules of procedure can well be formulated for the development of the work, yet definite lines of activities will readily present themselves as applicable to the individual needs of a community. This is especially true where community influences and agencies pertaining to general welfare are easily correlated.

CONSIDERABLE progress has been made during the last few years in analyzing the action of plastic deformation in metallic crystals. This is due largely to the development of X-ray spectrographic methods for studying changes in the orientation of single crystals, or of conglomerates, as they occur during the process of plastic deformation, but partly to the widespread knowledge of suitable technique for preparing large (single or variously combined) crystals for direct crystallographic observation under stress or in various conditions of strain. These two methods of studying changes in the crystalline structure of metals may of course be used in conjunction with features of mutual support, but unfortunately the advantage of direct crystallographic observation is lost when we proceed to the study of severely cold-worked structures, owing to the occurrence of real or apparent crystalline discontinuities which become more and more complicated as the amount of plastic action increases. Furthermore, the X-ray methods do not appear to be adequate, at least in their present stage of development, to fix definitely the character of structural alteration in the parent crystal lattice by plastic deformation. The principal question at issue concerns the nature of the crystalline particles that remain after plastic deformation. These are generally known in our American metallurgical literature as crystalline fragments,1 and they seem, indeed, to diffract as individuals causing the Hull pattern of a, severely cold-worked metal to resemble the pattern of a fine powder,2 with certain features of preferred orientation among the particles determined by the manner and intensity of cold working.

The deformation of textured sheet of titanium and several of its all-a (hcp) alloys was investigated with two kinds of experiments: tension testing along different directions in the plane of the sheet, and combined-stress loading along the principal axes of anisotropy (the rolling and transverse directions). Texture and plastic anisotropy were evaluated with pole figures and by measurement, as a function of orientation, of the tensile transverse-strain ratio, or R parameter. The results as a whole can be rationalized qualitatively with the present understanding of deformation mechanisms in titanium. Quantitative agreement between the orientation dependence of tensile yield strength and the Predictions of continuum ANISOTROPY in the properties of engineering materials is more the rule than the exception because anisotropy in structure is so common, and the one generally follows the other. Two broad categories of structural anisotropy are represented by mechanical fibering and crystallographic texture. The former is important in many aspects of fracture.' The latter has more significance for yielding and plastic deformation, theory, using the R measurements, was relatively poor. However, in tension-tension quadrants of the yield-locus diagrams, the difference between theory and experiment was hardly more than 10 pct. The maximum texture-hardening effect was found in a 4Al-1/4O2 alloy to be nearly 50 pct. In the compression-compression quadrant, {1012} deformation twinning prevented the locus from expanding much beyond the Position predicted for isotropic material. With increasing temperature the trend in R was downwards, approaching unity (isotropy) near the a-transus temperature; an accompanying development was large amounts of neck-free extension. which are of special concern in this paper. The tendency has been to view crystallographic texture more as a liability or curio than as an asset. The prominent exception is found in silicon-ferrite sheet for power-transformer cores, which is processed to develop a new optimum texture for high electrical efficiency. Yet it should be possible to find other examples, involving other kinds of properties. More specifically, there is good analytical reason to expect improved combined-stress yielding resistance in suitably textured material,2,3 and it has now been shown by experiment that texture hardening or softening is a potentially useful phenomenon in certain engineering devices and processes.'-I To date, work has included measurements of the transverse (width to thickness) strain ratios in the

Kansas retained, for the eighth consecutive year, the fourth position in the list of oil-producing states. The total crude-oil production during 1934, as reported by purchasers to the State Corporation Commission, was 45,538,564 bbl. on 97 per cent tank table calculations of the purchasers, or 46,946,973 bbl. as carried on 100 per cent measurement in U.S. Government reports. The corresponding figures for 1933 are 40,008,940 and 41,236,021, respectively. The increase of production over 1933 was due to the rising demand for oil from Kansas, caused principally by three factors: the continued regulation of the producing branch of the industry by Federal and State authorities, which had the effect of reducing illegal production that has been so destructively competitive with Kansas crude and refined products; the normal decline of production in other areas; and, last and best, general increased demand of the public for petroleum products. The price level remained unchanged for the first time in oil history for so long a period. Kansas 36" gravity crude remained at $1 per barrel from September, 1933, and throughout 1934. Price stability and the confidence in the regulation of production to meet the consumer demand, which is increasing, brought greatly renewed interest in Kansas fields. Drilling activity has been largely in the western part of the state where expiration of leases, on large blocks of acreage, assembled before the depression, is forcing either action or loss of the lease investment carried for a long period. The drilling of these many blocks of acreage, previously assembled on geologic information, has caused the opening of more fields than during any previous year of Kansas oil history and is proceeding faster than anticipated a year ago. Interest grows within a successful enterprise, and the momentum caused by the successes of 1934 will continue in 1935 unless unusual conditions arise and end the apparently good opportunity for financial return. Geological exploration methods used in new field discoveries are shown in the tabulation of new discoveries (Table 3).

In the past few years many men, including technically trained engineers, have been asphyxiated in metal mines, coal mines, tunnels and surface wells where a few relatively simple precautions with regard to ventilation and air testing would have saved them. Death from mine gases is analogous in some respects to death from poison and from drowning. The respiratory passages of a victim who has breathed oxides of nitrogen from burning explosives are badly irritated and a few hours or even a day after exposure he may develop a quick and fatal pneumonia; if, however, he enters without respiratory protective apparatus an atmosphere deficient in oxygen (a condition that may occur in unventilated or poorly ventilated parts of all underground mines) he collapses and if not rescued dies more quickly and surely than a lone nonswimmer who falls suddenly into deep water. An example of an atmosphere virtually without oxygen was demonstrated by an air sample taken by a Bureau of Mines engineer wearing oxygen breathing apparatus in a Cripple Creek shaft some years ago, during the recovery of the bodies of two victims of asphyxiation; analysis of the sample by the Pittsburgh laboratory of the Bureau showed the presence of 18.40 per cent of carbon dioxide, 0.27 per cent of oxygen, and 81.33 per cent of nitrogen, although the atmosphere apparently was clear and normal. In a mine one can pass from good, breathable air to an atmosphere that will kill as quickly as one can dive from a board to deep water below. Some Instances of Asphyxiation by Gases in Metal Mines The following typical examples of comparatively recent instances of asphyxiation in metal mines were taken chiefly from reports of various kinds of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

Our entry into the World War suddenly brought home to us in a startling way the vital importance of manganese. Since the war, much has been written and said upon the subject of manganese and a great deal of time and money have been spent in attempts to find an adequate substitute for this metal in the manufacture of steel; none has been found. It is true that ways are known by which it is possible to make small amounts of good steel without manganese, but taking into consideration the diminishing quality of iron ores and fuels as well as the increasing exaction of specifications for finished products, it may safely be assumed that, high-grade manganese ore will be more and more a necessity in the production of steel as time goes on. Taking world resources as a whole it may be well to point out that the problem of obtaining needed supplies of manganese from a strictly commercial viewpoint is now less serious than it was before the war. Formerly it was feared that world resources of high-grade manganese ore might be exhausted in a relatively short time, but, largely as a result of the stress laid upon the importance of manganese during the war, the world's available supply of high-grade manganese ore has been greatly augmented by new discoveries and fuller development of previously known deposits. Sources of Production Russia alone, of countries producing the major part of the world's stee1, has within its geographical boundaries sufficient manganese to supply its needs. The domestic production of England is inadequate and English requirements for high-grade manganese are supplied principally from India. France also draws largely upon India, as it depends upon foreign sources of supply except with respect to a small tonnage of silico-manga-nese and silico-spiegel produced in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Germany and the United States likewise depend upon foreign sources of high-grade ore, though each possesses comparatively large reserves of ferruginous manganese ore and manganiferous iron ore. At present the world demand for high-grade manganese ore is met with ease by the production of Russia, India, Gold Coast and Brazil.

THE methods of handling the oil output of the mid-continent fields are not unlike those practised in other oil fields of the United States, and it is not expected that this paper will present any entirely novel ideas. Some features of the practice of handling this oil may be of interest, however. WOODEN CAGING TANKS Practically all of the oil sold to pipe lines and other purchasing agencies throughout the Mid-continent field is gaged from wooden tanks. Steel gaging tanks are slowly coming into use, and are preferable in many ways-leakage and evaporation are reduced, and the strapping and recalculation of capacities are unnecessary. The wooden tanks are slightly coned to facilitate tightening the hoops. The-sizes in, common use are 250, 500, 800 and 1600 bbl. The number and the capacity of the gaging tanks upon any producing oil property depend upon its production, and the facilities for disposing of the output. The 1600-bbl. size was the most common in the Cushing field, particularly during the period of flush production. The tanks are distributed over the leased premises in groups of two, three, and four tanks each, and these are filled from flow tanks, or through direct pipe connections with the heads of the wells. Flow tanks are merely temporary reservoirs to facilitate the transfer of oil from the wells to the gaging tanks. They diminish fire risk,, and are considered indispensable on small producing properties where .water is pumped with the oil, as they permit the refuse and water to settle out before the production is run to the gaging tanks.

DITHIOPHOSPHATE collectors are commonly used in the flotation of sulphide minerals. Studies of the interaction of a typical dithiophosphate collector with galena surfaces have been previously reported from. these laboratories." These fundamental studies were carried out by employing phosphorus labeled radioactive dithiophosphate. Radioactivity determinations then could be used to measure readily and accurately the small concentrations of dithiophosphate that, are present under conditions of flotation processes. Measurements were made on ground mineral, determining the amount sorbed indirectly from the concentrations in solution; and studies were also made with single crystals, determining the amount sorbed directly by counting the crystal surface. The rates, isotherms and reversibility characteristics of dithiophosphate sorption, the competition between phosphate and dithiophosphate for the mineral surface, and the exchange of sorbed dithiophosphate with dissolved dithiophosphate were studied. These studies have now been extended by sorption measurements in flotations with a Fagergren, machine. For this work, the selective flotation of galena and sphalerite from quartz was chosen, using ammonium di-(sec-butyl) dithiophosphate as. the collector, sodium cyanide as depressant for sphalerite, and copper sulphate as an activator for sphalerite. While the selective flotation of galena and sphalerite using a single dithiophosphate collector is not typical of flotation practice (two different collectors are generally used), it was found that a reasonably good separation could be obtained by using zinc sulphate with the sodium cyanide in the galena flotation and by cleaning the sphalerite concentrate or by carrying out the sphalerite. flotation in an alkaline medium. Data of practical importance on the distribution of collector between the concentrates, tailings, and solutions were obtained, particularly with regard to the effect of copper sulphate and sodium cyanide. In addition to the. selective flotation of galena and sphalerite from quartz, single flotations of galena-quartz and sphalerite-quartz mixtures were carried out, along with blank flotations on quartz alone. The present paper describes the results of these experiments. As in previous papers, the term sorption is used to designate uptake of collector by the mineral, without implication as to the nature of the processes involved. Experimental Materials: The mineral system was a ground synthetic mixture of galena, sphalerite, and quartz. The galena was from Galena, Kans., and contained 75 pct lead (theoretical 85.6 pct Pb for PbS); the sphalerite, from Ottowa County, Okla., contained 63 pct zinc (theoretical 67.2 pet Zn for ZnS) ; and the quartz from Klondike, Mo., analyzed as 99.97 pet SiO2. Sulphur labeled radioactive di-(sec-butyl) dithiophosphate was prepared from S82 supplied by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory on allocation from the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The synthesis consisted of precipitating barium sulphate, reducing the barium sulphate to barium sulphide, acidifying to form hydrogen sulphide, and oxidizing the hydrogen sulphide with iodine to elemental sulphur.

THIS paper is a brief discussion of the past and present methods employed by the Huntington Works of The International Nickel Co., Inc., in the production of nickel and high nickel alloy seamless tubing. The various operations for both hot and cold processing will be considered in their natural sequence, together with the processing characteristics of the high nickel alloys and some descriptions of the equipment used. The tools and lubricants currently in use will be described. This discussion will relate primarily to nickel, Monel,† and Inconel,† since these are the most common of the many alloys processed into tubing at the Huntington Works. The nominal compositions of the materials are shown in Table I. CONVERSION FROM SOLID BILLETS TO TUBE SHELLS History The commercial production of seamless nickel and high nickel alloy tube shells is a comparatively recent development, the first nickel shells having been produced in 1922, Monel in 1930, and Inconel in 1931 on rotary-type piercing mills. Rolled or forged billets, ranging from 3 ½ - to 7 ½ in. diam, were pierced to produce shells ranging' in size from 4 3/8 in. OD X 0.180 in. wall to 8 3/8 in. OD X 1.0 in. wall. After piercing, the shells. were further processed by hot rolling, reeling, and sizing. Subsequent to these operations the shells were either supplied to the trade as "hot finished" tubes, or were processed by cold drawing to smaller sizes at the Huntington Works of the International Nickel Co. The extrusion of nickel and high nickel alloys also may be classed as a relative newcomer to the field of hot-forming methods, for it was not until 1928 that the commercial extrusion of these alloys was begun on a 600 long ton vertical extrusion press installed at Zenith Works of Henry Wiggin and Co., Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland. This press did considerable pioneer work and the results were so favorable that in 1937 a -2200 long ton horizontal press was installed. The quality of the inside surface of the tubing produced on this press was superior to that produced by piercing on a rotary-type mill and, as a result of this experience, a 4000 ton horizontal extrusion press was installed at the Huntington Works in 1943. Billet Preparation The first step in the extrusion, process is the selection of ingots with good hot malleability, as indicated by the test described by Martin and Bieber.1 Ingots then are forged into rough rounds which are machined to the desired billet diameter on a "bar peeler." This machine consists of a rotary head which carries the cutting tools and is driven by a 200 hp, dc motor. The feed mechanism consists of hydraulically driven input and output carriages on the respective sides of the cutter head.
