The mechanism of materials transport was studied in a model experiment in which a silver sphere was sintered to a silver plate under an applied external stress near 800° C. For this purpose the rate of growth of the neck between the sphere and the plate which is proportional to the strain rate of the creep process involved in a neck growth was determined by measuring the change in electrical resistance of the away. This rate of neck growth will depend upon the magnitude of the applied external stress. By measuring the rate just before and just after a change in the external load and therefore the applied stress, the relationship between strain rate and stress can be derived. For material transport by slip in a pure metal it is expected that the strain rate should be proportional to the 4.5th power of the stress, while for transport by diffusional flow the strain rate should be proportional to the first power of the stress. It was found that for stresses above 5 X 10' dynes per sq cm (70 psi) the exponent in the stvain rate-stress relationship was near 4.5 while for a stress of 0.7 x 108 dynes per sq cm (10 psi) an exponent of 1.8 was determined indicating that under the conditions of the experiment the transport mechanism for creep in silver shifts from diffusional flow to slip in the region of 0.7 x 106 dynes per sq cm (10 psi). The importance of these findings for an understanding of the mechanism of material transport in conventional sintering (without an external load) is pointed out. In a paper by Early et al.,' the mechanism of material transport during sintering was treated as a creep process. It was pointed out that two possible types of creep processes could operate during sintering. In one of these material transport takes place by vacancy diffusion due to a gradient in chemical potential. The vacancy sinks in this diffusion process may be either grain boundaries, as in Herring-Nabarro microcreep, or regions beneath a surface of small radius of curvature. The diffusive transport may be by volume, grain boundary, or surface diffusion. In the other mechanism, creep takes place by slip, i.e., dislocation motion with its rate generally controlled by dislocation climb. One method of distinguishing between these two modes of materials transport is to investigate the creep rate, i.e., the rate of material transport as a function of stress. For material transport by vacancy diffusion, the creep rate is proportional to the stress.' For creep by slip, controlled by dislocation climb, the creep rate is proportional to a power of the stress. For pure metals this power is 4.5;374 for dispersion-strengthened material a fourth power relationship can be derived.5 This difference in the stress dependence of the strain rate is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1, in which the logarithm of strain rate is plotted vs the logarithm of the stress for material transport in a pure metal by vacancy flux and by dislocation climb. The stress range in which the two types of material transport overlap would be expected to be relatively small. In the experiments described by Early and coworkers compacts pressed from spherical copper powder were sintered isothermally under an applied axial external load in a dilatometer. During sintering the magnitude of the applied external load was changed and the rate of axial shrinkage of the compact before and after the load change determined. In order to find the stress dependence of the strain rate the magnitude of the stress acting on the neck area between the spherical particles before and after the load change had to be calculated. This stress is the resultant of the stresses due both to the externally applied load and to surface tension. The stress due to surface tension is a function of the geometry of the powder compacts. It can be determined, at least for simple geometrical arrays,'76 but it is difficult to obtain exact values of the stresses for actual powder compacts when only average values of particle diameters and of neck diameters between particles are available. The calculation of stress and the strain rate-stress relationship is therefore only very approximate.

The possibility of using a semiconductor, metal, semiconductor structure as a light detector is discussed. A brief theoretical argument is presented which predicts that this structure should have pho-toresponse characteristics similur to those of a metal-semiconductor diode, but with the magnitude of the current increased by a transistor gain factor. Measurements made at low frequencies on a particulur S-M-S device agree u~th this prediction aizd shoul that significant gain factors are attainable. The current gain is substantially higher than that predicted for the metal base transistor. It is proposed that the operation of these units is more closely approxinzated by the metal-gate model which predicts higher current gains. A qualitative discussion of its high-frequency performance indicates that detection of light modulated at microwave frequencies by a S-M-S deuice is possible. ADVANCES in the technology of chemical vapor deposition'-4 have made it possible to form a S-M-S structure consisting of a thin metallic layer sandwiched between layers of single-crystal semiconductor. It has been proposed5-7 that, if the metal layer is made sufficiently thin, this structure could be used in an amplifier having several advantages over presently available transistors including higher-frequency performance. Calculations8 predict that the maximum gain-bandwidth product is nearly an order of magnitude higher than that of a bipolar transistor having the same geometry. Maximum oscillating frequencies in the microwave range are predicted. Electrical measurements made on S-M-S devices have shown that, although the theoretical frequency characteristics are not presently attainable, current and power gain is obtained. Another possible application of the S-M-S structure is its use in a light detector. This structure is a three-layer relative of the metal-semiconductor diode. Light detection using M-S diodes is the subject of considerable present interest. They are known to have a short response time and the ability to detect light having a photon energy below the semiconductor bandgap. In this paper, the mechanism by which S-M-S photocurrent is generated is discussed. An expression is derived which shows that the response characteristics are similar to those of a M-S diode, but that the magnitude of the current is increased due to the transistorlike behavior of the device. The results of low-frequency response measurements on a particular S-M-S structure are presented. These agree with the theoretical predictions and show that significant gain factors are attainable. A qualitative discussion of the high-frequency characteristics is presented which predicts that detection of light at microwave frequencies by a S-M-S device is possible. THEORY In this discussion, the photocurrent, iT, measured across terminals attached to the semiconductor emitter and collector layers is related to the current pho-toemitted from the metal base layer. The latter will be referred to as the primary photocurrent. The behavior of the primary photocurrent is determined by the characteristics of the two metal-semiconductor diodes. The diode photoemission is illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows the emitter and collector potential barriers. The metal thickness has been greatly exaggerated. As will be discussed later, the actual barrier shape can be much more complex, but this diagram illustrates the essential features of the photoemission process. THIS note describes an unusual result obtained in an electron microscope investigation of cavities produced in commercial type 304 stainless steel irradiated in a thermal reactor (ETR) at 290°C to a high neutron flu-ence, 6 x loz1 n per sq cm. The analysis of the steel used is given in Table I. The unusual result is that the calculated quantity of helium gas produced by transmutation during the irradiation, 12 ppm, is less than one-tenth the amount of gas necessary to balance the surface tension of the observed cavities produced in the steel during ETR irradiation. Therefore, the cavities would be expected to behave like voids; however, they behave like "gas filled" bubbles. The maximum quantity of helium produced in the steel by B" transmutation was 8 ppm. In addition, the amount of helium formed by (n, (1) fast neutron reactions with the major alloy constituents and nitrogen was calculated to be 4 ppm based on the tabulated differential or effective fission-averaged cross sections of elements in type 304 stainless steel irradiated in typical thermal reactors.', In previous investigations concerning commercial austenitic stainless steel irradiated in a thermal reactor, the amount of helium gas calculated to be produced by transmutation has always been significantly greater than the amount calculated on the basis that the bubbles were gas filled, PPs= 2y/R. The balance of the gas was assumed to be in bubbles smaller than could be detected on the electron micrographs. Accordingly, the bubbles were attributed to helium produced from transmutation of impurity boron by thermal neutrons. These bubbles were not uniformly dispersed in the matrix but were located principally at grain boundaries, or were radially positioned around a few precipitates located in the matrix and at the grain bundaries., 4 Voids have also been observed in austenitic stainless steel irradiated at high temperature to high neutron fluences in the EBR-I1 and Dounreay Fast Reactors. The voids were uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. The amounts of helium gas produced by transmutation during these irradiations were less than one-tenth the amounts needed to balance the surface tension of the voids formed by the fast reactor irradiation. The fast reactor results are quite analogous to those reported here for the ETR irradiated steel. Electron microscope examination of the fast reactor irradiated material after a 1 hr postirradiation annealing at 900°C disclosed that essentially all the voids had been eliminated. The authors stated that the voids had developed due to the high concentration of vacancies produced during irradiatin., 6, ' The microstructure of the ETR irradiated material as-tested at 75O°C, Fig. 1, contained about 2 X lot5 cavities per cm3 with an average diameter of 110A. With the Van der Waals b correction and y = 1500 ergs per cm2, 300 ppm He would balance the surface tension of the observed cavities. Stereoscopic examination of the electron micrographs showed that the cavities were neither preferentially located near the grain boundaries nor highly concentrated at specific regions or precipitates. The cavities were nearly uniformly distributed throughout the matrix, on dislocations and at grain boundaries. These observations imply that the cavities were not the sole results of B'O

UNLESS present in considerable proportion, metals of the precious-metal group-other than gold and silver-are not readily detected by the methods of fire assaying usually applied to ores and metallurgical products. Platinum, when present in small quantity, will ordinarily be reported as silver unless special methods of parting are used. Other elements occurring in the gold itself are all fluxed and slagged in the assay operation and if analyses are made on bullions the melting and slagging operations to which the bullion has been subjected may eliminate most of the associated elements. On the other hand, the analysis of precipi-tate from the cyanide treatment of gold ores may reveal the presence of many unexpected elements, such as tungsten and molybdenum. It is uncertain, however, whether many of the elements present in the pre-cipitate are derived from the ore gangue or from the gold itself. No very general survey of the distribution of metallic elements in gold seems to have been made. Rose and Newman,1 in connection with the composition of native gold, say in part as follows: Gold is occasionally found alloyed with copper and sometimes also with iron, bis-muth, lead, mercury, tin, antimony, palladium or rhodium. Rhodium gold from Mexico was found to be of the specific gravity 15.5 to 16.8 and contained 34 to 43 per cent of rhodium. The native alloy of palladium, gold, and silver from Porpez con-tains 85.98 per cent of gold, 9.85 per cent palladium and 4.17 per cent silver. Mal-donite, from Victoria, contains gold 64.5 per cent, bismuth 35.5 per cent (Louis). Dana' says that native gold is usually alloyed with silver in varying amounts, and that sometimes it also contains traces of copper and iron. Rare varieties contain palladium, rhodium and bismuth. Other authors, for instance Zeigler3 and Clark,4 give similar information. Most refer-ences on the subject agree that ordinary native golds contain, in common, the elements silver, copper and iron. After completion of the work of which this paper is a record, the conclusion is reached that all ordinary native gold probably does contain these elements and, although in certain cases other elements may be found to be present, that it is difficult to

In the Northern Rhodesia copper fields the size of the orebodies and the exceptionally consistent values over great distances made it possible to outline the ore with drill holes spaced at 1000-ft. intervals; in some cases, 2000-ft. intervals. Owing to the fact that the size of the deposits made it very evident that much outside capital would have to be called in to develop them and, owing to the wide spacing of the holes, it was essential that the sampling of drill holes be as accurate as possible, so that outside examining engineers could adopt the results as trustworthy within the limits of accuracy of the drilling method. With this object in view, the field staffs of the Selection Trust group of companies have studied for the past three years, and are still studying, drill sampling in a very thorough manner, and for this reason it is felt that these notes may be of interest to engineers or students who are, or in the future may be, in charge of drilling operations. The orebodies in this field lie in shales and sandstones, more or less indurated, in the lower strata of the Roan series, and the copper mineralization is in the form of sulfides predominantly, with some oxidized copper minerals. These interested in the geology and history of the area can find full details in a recent paper by Anton Gray and Russell J. Parker.' In some formations core recovery was good—between 90 and 100 per cent.—and where any difficulty occurred in recovering sludge, as in fissured ground, this was not insisted upon; but the samplers' difficulties, both practical and theoretical, do not commence until core recovery drops and sludge recovery becomes important, for if core is being ground up it is recoverable only as sludge, and naturally the sludge sample, which theoretically should contain only the material cut from the annular ring around the core, is being salted, in a sense, by the ground-up core. Environmental control is predicted to be 5-10% of total plant costs in some parts of the U.S. Operating and design companies will assign this new "unit operation" a place in the early flow sheets. More advanced environmental control will add to both capital and operating costs, so mill designers will strive to reduce other costs.

Because of the necessity for taking regularly occurring open-flow tests in prorated high-pressure oil fields, much gas is turned to atmosphere by way of vertical vent lines leading away from the oil and gas separator. In the past, measurement of such gas has been accomplished by several methods, usually by use of the open-flow Pitot tube. The use of the closed-flow Pitot tube has been avoided apparently chiefly because the ordinary vent-line hook-up makes it necessary to apply the instrument closer to a bend, valve, or obstruction in the pipe than is recommended by rules of good practice. The many advantages that would result from the application of the closed-flow Pitot tube prompted investigation of the actual effect upon quantity rate of flow measurements computed from data obtained with the tube in a normal working position, which is closer to the tee at the base of the vent riser than is usually considered as giving highly accurate results. An effort Was first made to compare the results thus obtained to those under ideal conditions and at high velocities To make this comparison, knowledge of the characteristics of gas flowing at very high velocities is essential. Research for such information indicated that little or no work had been done that would give data necessary for such a comparison, therefore the problem was changed to a test designed to determine the relationship between quantity rates of flow as measured by an orifice meter and a Pitot tube placed at the center of a pipe eight diameters from a tee or ell at the base of a vent riser, through which gas is flowing under low pressures at very high velocities. To determine this relationship, a series of tests was run on a number of 8-in. iron-pipe vent riser., in which the Pitot tube data were taken at the position as stated above. Gas from a wet-gas gathering system was passed through an orifice meter setting and thence to atmosphere by way of the vents. Data were taken simultaneously from the orifice meter and Pitot tube from which computations for comparisons were made. The actual method of comparison is discussed later in this paper. The superplastic behavior of low carbon and manganese bearing steels has been evaluated. The results of elevated-temperature stress-strain rate and elongation tests are reported which indicate that high strain rate sensitivity (>0.5) and adequate elongations are achievable in ultrafine-grained steels 1 to 2 p, but at strain rates which are not commercially attractive. It has been demonstrated that the fine grain size is retained after long times and high strains if the temperature is kept within the range of the two-phase (a + ?) field. INTEREST in superplasticity has been stimulated by the desire to: 1) understand the origin of, and mechanisms responsible for, the large uniform elongations observed, and 2) exploit this property for commercial advantage in metal forming operations. Although the Zn-22 wt pct Al alloy presently being studied as a model material1-5 may find application in sheet forming and extrusion, the potential of super-plasticity should best be realized in large tonnage materials, such as steel and aluminum alloys. The degree of superplasticity in low-carbon and manganese-bearing steels has been evaluated. The results of elevated-temperature stress-strain rate and elongation tests on ultrafine grain size material are reported. Avery and Backofen6 and Hart7 have shown that geometrically stable flow leading to extensive uniform elongation in the tension test is associated with high values of the strain rate sensitivity, m, defined: Lozinsky had reported that titanium and zirconium experience permanent deformation if subjected to a constant load and cyclic heating through the temperature range of the phase transformation. Although strain rate sensitivities in excess of about 0.2 had not been reported previously for steel, permanent deformation had been observed11-13 in a wide variety of steels subjected to a constant load and cyclic heating through the temperature range of the a-? phase transformation. Thus by analogy, steel could be expected to exhibit high strain rate sensitivity but only in the a + ? condition. High strain rate sensitivity has been observed at 650°C (a + Fe3C), but not reported as such, by Bailey, Dickenson, and pearson14 in 1931 at a strain rate of about 10-9 per min. It then remained to determine whether high tensile elongations would be observed in a rate-controlled test at constant temperature and at what strain rate strain rate sensitivity values greater than 0.5 would be observed. Since previous experience8 had indicated the importance of fine grain size to realizing high m at reasonable strain rates, it was first necessary to produce an ultrafine grain size and then keep the grains from growing during the test. The results of this investigation show that fine grain size can be readily produced16 and maintained by restricting the temperature of testing to below the ? transus. Further, superplasticity (high m and large uniform elongation) is observed. However, the strain rate range is only marginally useful for commercial forming operations with the finest grain size produced. MATERIAL The material investigated initially was a 1.9 wt pct Mn, 0.42 wt pct C, hot-rolled bar previously used by Low and Turka1015 and available in the laboratory. The 0.500-in. round was cold-rolled to a 0.090-in. flat, annealed for 4 hr at 850°C in argon, air-cooled, and cold-finished to 0.050 in. Subsequently, four additional steels of the compositions given in Table I were investigated to explore the effects of manganese, carbon, and test temperature on the observed stress-strain rate behavior. These steels were melted under argon, cast to 0.75 by 2 by 5 in. slabs, hot-rolled at 850°C, surface-finished to 0.13 in., and cold-finished to 0.050 in. Sheet tensile specimens 0.200 in. x thickness with 1- or 2-in. gage length were cut parallel to the rolling direction. Table I also includes the nominal transformation temperatures for the AISI 1340 and the four experimental steels. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Production of Fine Grain Size. The effect of new discoveries and development of other pools recently discovered is reflected in the increase in production from 586,000 bbl. during 1940 to 758,000 bbl. during 1941 in Coleman County. The States Oil Company's No. I Hudson, Coleman County, was the discovery well of the Silver field, with a total depth of 3540 ft.; initial production, 10,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas and 60 bbl. of oil per day from the Gray sand, topped at 3482 ft. The first well drilled in the new Jim Ned field was the Merry Bros. and Perini No. I Greer, also in Coleman County. It had a total depth of 3937 ft. and an initial production of 152 bbl. of 42" gravity oil in 6 hr., through I-in. choke, from Gray sand encountered from 3909 to 3937 feet. J. E. Farrell's No. I Rose, Haskell County, was a new discovery, around which no additional wells have been drilled. Total depth was 3002 ft., plugged back to 2780 ft. to test an oil sand encountered from 2663 to 2685 ft., which when perforated with 76 shots at that depth was good for 85 bbl. of 40" gravity oil. In Fisher County, General Crude drilled its No. 12 Flanagan to a total depth of 6746 ft. After plugging back to 4578 ft. to test a sand encountered from 4515 to 4528 ft. it was abandoned as a dry hole. The top of the Ellenburger was reported as 6094 feet. Interest in Jones County continued unabated, largely through the development of the Wimberly pool in the southern part of the county, where five Cisco sands are producing. At present the pool has been defined on the south and the southwest. The structure has 170 ft. of closure; the lower limestone pays producing on top of the structure and the fist pay encountered, the Akard sand, producing on the flanks of the structure. Five deep wells were drilled in Stonewall County (H. and T.C. survey)—the Shell Oil Company's No. I-A Patterson, in block D, with a total depth of 6827 ft., dry and abandoned; the Shell Oil Company's No. I Rutherford, block I, with a total depth of 6239 ft., dry and abandoned; the Leader Oil Company's No. I Bilberry, block D, with a total depth of 5700 ft., dry and abandoned; Forest Development Company's No. 2 Boyd, block D, with a total depth of 4753 ft., dry and abandoned; and the Hunter et al. No. I Boyd, block D, total depth 4757 ft., dry and abandoned. J. E. Farrell drilled his No. I Tipton south of a well that produced from a Strawn sand for some time, to a total depth of 5202 ft., where it was abandoned. The well is in the southwest corner of sec. 43, block 19, T. and P. survey, Nolan County.

SINCE the introduction of the first percussion rock drill in about 1850, drilling equipment has undergone a progressive evolution so that a wide range of special classes of machines now are marketed by several manufacturers. Essentially all of the drilling machines presently employed for blasthole drilling are of the hammer-drill type. They are classified as hand-held hammers (jackhammers, sinkers, etc.), drifters (light or heavy), and stopers and are of many sizes; varying in weight and rotative and blowing power. Most makes of drill machines fundamentally are the same in principle of operation as they are designed to strike a blow on the end of a drill rod in the manner of early-day hand drilling. However, beyond this common characteristic, the similarity among different makes ceases. In choosing between similar machines of one make or another, it is important to remember that rock drill manufacturers have not attempted to standardize drill parts, the result being that a mine operator must approach, because of replacement parts, standardization by limiting the makes of machines used. The present-day selection of any particular drilling machine is dependent fundamentally on its inherent ability to make a hole, or series of holes, as speedily and as cheaply as is possible. Two categories of controlling elements become apparent in any analysis devoted to making the choice of a drill, namely: 1-Conditions under which the equipment is to be used, such as mining method practiced, type of labor available, character of rock material. 2-Physical characteristics or features of the given drilling machine. Regardless of the controls of class 1, above, the elements of this category are fixed by several factors. All of them are interrelated and, though some often are more important in one case than in another, an unfavorable variation of any-others being essentially equal-is sufficient to discredit the optimum applicability of the particular drill machine. The relative factors in the selection of a machine are as follows: First cost-This is not generally an important item on a comparative basis as the marketing of drill machines is highly competitive and most makes are priced closely.

ONE of the most striking phenomena connected with the mines on the Comstock lode is the extreme heat encountered in the lower levels. This heat is not due to the burning of candles, heat of the men, and decomposition of timbers, all intensified by bad ventilation, as was the case nearer the surface. It proceeds from the rock, which maintains constantly a temperature very much higher than the average of the atmosphere in Nevada. The heat of these mines is a matter of more than usual interest, for they are the only hot ones now worked in the United States, and both in the present temperature encountered and in the increase which is to be expected as greater depths are reached, they appear to surpass any foreign mines of which we have a record. Hot mines are known also in other countries, as in the tin and copper lodes of Wales, where one of the veins worked by the United Mines is known as the hot lode. It has springs which discharge water at a temperature of 116' Fahrenheit, the depth being 220 fathoms, or 1320 feet. The heat of the air in these workings is. given at 100' to 113' Fahrenheit. The air is bad, and the heat in the drifts seems to be traceable to defective ventilation rather than to the real necessities of the case. Air is supplied through a small pipe, and is drawn from a place where the temperature is 95' Fahrenheit. Under such circumstances it is not surprising to read that in this hot mine the air is hotter than the rock, a state of things which I hare never observed in the Comstock. Other mines have been reported to the British Coal Committee as having temperatures of 106" Fahrenheit and thereabouts, but the only positive comparisons that are available at this writing are the following, all from Cornish mines : Mine. Idarado Mining Company's mill and surface plant are at the portal of the Treasury tunnel at elevation 10,625 ft, 12 miles south of Ouray, Colo. In 1943 and 1944 this tunnel was extended in a westerly direction to tap the Black Bear vein, and, together with the recently completed 1100-ft inclined Treasury raise, provides access to the Black Bear mine. In 1945 a 250-ton mill was placed in operation to process development ores containing much needed copper, lead and zinc for war requirements, and to serve as a pilot testing unit for larger scale milling operations. In the years 1902 to 1927 some 329,000 tons of ore were produced from mine workings on the Black Bear vein that extended downward from elevation I2,325 ft at the Black Bear tunnel portal to elevation 11,618 ft, the lowest level of the mine. The ores were taken to the Cascade and Smuggler-Union mills near Telluride over two aerial tramways. Gold bullion, a copper-lead concentrate, and a zinc concentrate were produced. Ores The Black Bear is a compound fissure vein that has undergone several stages of mineralization. The first important stage is represented by complex ores of copper. lead and zinc in a quartz gangue. Precious metal content in this stage is low. The galenn is argentiferous and varying amounts of tetrahedrite, freibergite and bornite tend to increase the normal copper content represented in chalcopyrite. The zinc occurs as a true sphalerite with little or no iron. Later re-openings of the fissure took place more or less co-extensively with the successive introduction of (I) abundant quartz gangue containing minor amounts of chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; (2) free gold in a fluoritic quartz gangue; and (3) barren, low-grade quartz with minor amounts of pyrite as the only important sulphide. The sulphides show practically no oxidation and little mineralogic inter-growth. Because of the common overlapping of these successive stages of mineralization within a given mining area, considerable dilution of the base-metal content takes place, thus lowering the average mill-head grade. Plant Practice Metallurgical testing was started shortly after the Black Bear vein was encountered on Treasury tunnel level in 1944. Laboratory tests showed good flotability of the minerals in the ore and indicated an economic separation could be made of the copper, lead and zinc minerals into their respective concentrates. The success of the separation is close reagent control to maintain a balance between promotion and depression of the sulphides. To maintain this balance reagent consumption for the three metal separation is considerably higher than in ordinary lead-zinc flotation.

So FAR as the quality of the product is concerned, the history of the production of pig iron for foundry purposes is one of constant retrogression. The steps in this deterioration began with cold-blast charcoal pig iron, then anthracite iron, coke iron; then gradually warm to hot-blast coke iron, with the charcoal furnaces also heating their blast to get greater tonnages, and finally the present day hot-blast coke irons with scrap additions to the ordinary burden that, according to one European report, have gone as high as 135 per cent. Parallel with this quality retrogression is the enormous increase in furnace tonnages from about 15 tons daily to over 1000 tons per day in exceptional instances of modern practice. The key to this situation is economic pressure. The effect is a growing differentiation between furnace production for gray iron and malleable foundries and for the production of commercial steel. As the foundry is often compelled to draw upon the pig irons made for steel purposes, for economic reasons, whereas the steel industry does not draw upon foundry pig irons proper, the situation is resolving itself into one of grave consequence for the life of the gray-iron castings industry, and hence the intensive present-day feeling in foundry circles for rigid specifications to govern the quality of pig irons sold for foundry use. In the discussion of a paper on the use of scrap in the blast furnace held recently in the Institute, a very pertinent remark was made by one of the participating furnacemen, who confessed that "the things found wrong by the foundryman with his iron were beyond his depth." It may be added that those things are also beyond the depth of most foundrymen who, however, know from their results that they are getting poorer castings today with many pig irons than they did with those same brands in former years. Under the former fracture buying, the foundryman at least could select the strongest metal, as judged by the sledge, from various brands of similar fracture and pig section, and his results proved the soundness of his conclusions. THE Company maintains a port agency at Antofagasta for dispatching copper and also for receiving from ocean vessels the vast variety of materials and supplies required at the plant. Copper shipments from the oxide plant refinery to Antofagasta amounted to 162,000 metric tons during 1951, while incoming freight totalled 175,000 metric tons. Electrolytic market copper in various shapes is currently loaded at the plant upon 20 or 30-ton cars of the meter-gage Antofagasta-Bolivia Railroad, to be transported a distance of 165 miles to the company's yard at Antofagasta. Here it is unloaded by cranes at the rate of about 175 tons per hr. Copper not scheduled for immediate shipment is stocked in tiers within the yard, but most of it is reloaded and sent to port works or a wharf serving lighters. Some of the vessels entering Antofagasta tie up at the port works, while others anchor inside the breakwater. In the latter case, all of the loading into the hatches is from 50-ton lighters towed to the vessel. When the vessel is at the dock, about half of the copper is loaded by port works cranes and the other half is loaded by ship's tackle from lighters. Fuel Oil Requirement Expands One of the innovations caused by the construction of the sulphide plant has been the necessity to provide facilities at Antofagasta for receiving and storing greater quantities of fuel oil than in recent years. From here it is loaded into tank cars for transportation to Chuquicamata. The older installation consisted of a 10-in. submarine pipe line, heating, and pumping facilities, a 67,500-bbl storage tank, and railroad loading rack, located at Antofagasta's northern limits. Two new tanks, of 80,000 and 30,000-bbl capacity respectively, have now been added and a second submarine pipe line will shortly be installed. Fuel oil requirements for the sulphide plant are estimated at 39,000 bbl per month, in addition to which 9000 bbl per month are required for the operation of the oxide plant. The company has a special lighter which is used by its diver for connecting the oil line with the oil tanker when disembarking oil, this lighter also being used for inspecting and overhauling buoys, as well as for recovery of bars of copper which are sometimes dropped into the bay when loading vessels during periods of rough weather. Transport of oil to Chuquicamata is by 76 tank cars of, 20-ton capacity and 20 of 30-ton capacity, all assigned to the company's fuel oil shipments excepting six for Diesel oil and one for gasoline. Incoming Freight Other freight received by the port agency has been averaging about 4800 metric tons per month of operating supplies for the oxide plant (renewals of equipment, spare parts, lubricating oils, and greases, etc.), some 1900 metric tons per month for the company stores, and about 6000 metric tons per month of materials and equipment for the construction of the sulphide plant. The greater part of these shipments (particularly the operating and construction supplies) originate from abroad, and must be handled through the Chilean Customs. Hence the company maintains a Customs storage warehouse (goods pending appraisal of Customs duties) in addition to its other storage facilities at Antofagasta. Not the least of the Port Agency's duties is to meet air and steamer passengers en route to Chuquicamata and to arrange for their trips up the hill. Landing in a strange country with a strange language, the first impressions of a new employee might otherwise be indeed confusing when facing Antofagasta's unique setting of brown barren hills.

Double roasting of sinter carrying a high percentage of lead concentrates, gave rise to the problem of removing the sheets of metallic lead formed in the wind boxes. The solution of the problem has been found in the water sealed wind boxes. The metallic lead is granulated and can be removed without seriously interfering with the operation of the machine and eliminates necessity of men going in wind boxes with air guns. THE practice of double sintering the charge for lead blast furnaces, which is now standard throughout the lead smelting industry, has introduced the rather difficult problem of cleaning the wind boxes on sintering machines used for the final pass. Two factors have more recently accentuated this problem: (1) the growing demand of workmen for better working conditions and less arduous labor, and (2) the growing dearth of crude lead ores and the improved grade of lead concentrates demand a charge carrying the maximum percentage of lead. One to 2 pct of such high lead charges (30 to 40) when processed on machines in reasonably good condition will pass through the grates and report in the wind boxes. One-half to three-quarters of this material will be metallic lead reduced by the coke breeze or other fuel mixed with the charge. This lead forms large cakes or chunks which are hard to remove and which substantially increase the time the machine is out of operation for cleaning the wind boxes. A high lead fall can reduce the operating time 30 pct. As a specific example, a 30 ft machine having 63 in. pallets, and equipped with three conventional wind boxes, requires 3 to 4 hr per day for removing the accumulation in the wind boxes when operated as a final pass machine. This same machine when operated on raw charge requires less than an hour per day for cleaning. To eliminate formation of large chunks of lead in the wind boxes of the final pass machines and time lost in cleaning the boxes, R. C. Rutherford of the Chihuahua smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., devised and patented* a wind box having a water bath to granulate the lead as it falls from the grate bars. Later, C. H. Harris of the San Luis plant made and patentedt an improvement on Rutherford's device in which the water bath seals the wind box in a manner permitting the latter to be readily cleaned without destroying the vacuum. The first machine to our knowledge to use the water bath box was at the Chihuahua plant along the lines of the Rutherford patent. In 1942, a machine was placed in operation at the El Paso plant which incorporated the features of both Rutherford and Harris. This machine is 40 ft long equipped with pallets 63 x 24 in., and having 4 wind boxes 10 ft 4 in. x 7 ft 2 in. x 51 ft 3 in. in size (fig. 1). Oil quenching of steel, in good commercial practice, is carried out using a great deal of agitation in the quenching bath. Many of the tests reported in the literature represent the results obtained on steels quenched into still oil. Scott1 describes three stages of cooling in liquid quenching baths, namely: "State 'A'— Vapor Blanket Cooling—In this, the first stage, a thin stable vapor film surrounds the hot metal. Cooling is by conduction and radiation through the gaseous film and is therefore relatively slow. "Stage 'B'—Vapor Transport Cooling— Termination of the 'A' stage is marked by wetting of the metal surface. Vapor forms copiously in bubbles and is carried away by gravity and convection currents to condense in cooler surrounding liquid. This is the fastest stage of cooling. "Stage 'C'—Liquid Cooling—The 'B' stage ends as the surface temperature of the metal approaches the boiling point of the quenching liquid. Vapor no longer forms, so cooling is by conduction and convection and the temperature difference is greatly decreased. This mode of cooling is slower than that of the 'B' stage." Mechanical agitation of the quenching medium will accelerate all three stages of cooling. The greatest effect, however, will be noted on stage ' B' because the removal of the bubbles from the surface of the steel will not be entirely dependent upon gravity and natural convection currents. The method employed in this investigation for evaluating the oils was the end quench test. The various oils were substituted for water as the quenching liquid and hardness determinations were made at various distances from the quenched end. Most of the tests were run using a 3/8-in. orifice with a 21/2-in. stream height. However, to check the effect of other velocities two additional conditions were used, namely: (I) A 3/8-in. orifice and I-in. stream height, and (2) a 1/2-in. orifice and a 31/2-in. stream height. In all cases the samples were suspended so that the quenched end was 1/2-in. above the orifice. Some tests were run on an NE 8740, .3,312, and a 4340 steel. The results obtained on these steels confirmed those obtained on the NE 9450 and have therefore been Omitted from this paper. The test bars were machined from 1/8-in. stock to I-in. diam by 4 in. long.

The mines operated by the South American Development Co. are located in the Zaruma mining district of southwestern Ecuador. They are near the old mining town of Zaruma, which is the only important city in the canton of the same name. The district is situated in the upper end of a valley lying between two spurs of the Cordillera, one of which may be considered the Coast Range and the other an intermediate range. The mining camp proper, known as Portovelo, and the plant are 2.4 km. south of Zaruma, on the north bank of the Amarillo River, a tributary of the Tumbes River, which flows southwestward through Peru to the Pacific. Portovelo is difficult of access; it is reached from Guayaquil by means of river steamers and muleback. 'Embarking at Guayaquil, the route is down the Guayas River, across the Jambeli Canal, and up the Santa Rosa River to Santa Rosa, a distance of 177 km. From Santa Rosa, the road or trail follows the Santa Rosa River, then across the summit of the Coast Range into Portovelo, a distance of 74 km.—a two-day trip on muleback. The mining property of the South American Development Co. comprises 297 lode claims and 142 placer claims. The combined lode claims cover an area, roughly rectangular in shape, 9000 m. long from north to south by 4000 m. wide; the northern edge of the rectangle is about 3000 m. north of the central plaza of Zaruma. Mineral lands in Ecuador are held by virtue of an annual tax per claim paid to the central government, no surface rights being included. HiSTOry The Zaruma mine has been worked by white men since 1549, probably before that it was worked by Indians. The followers of Pizarro, led by traces of gold in the sands of the Tumbes River, followed that stream to its source, worked the gold veins that they found and established the city of Zaruma. Introduction In the U.S., about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacing these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal in unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still have a long way to go and costs are very high. Another option, which appears very attractive, is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form - coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corp. has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC), a wholly-owned subsidiary. Both coal-oil mixtures and coalwater mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality metallurgical coals. There are a number of incentives for potential users of coal slurry fuels and in particular for coal-water mixtures (CWMs). First, CWM represents an assured supply of fuel at a price predictable into future years. Second, CWM is available in the near term; there are no substantial advances in technology needed to provide coal slurry fuels commercially. Third, there is minimal new equipment required to accommodate CWM in the end-user's facility. Fourth, CWM is nearly as convenient to handle, store, and combust as is fuel oil. Several variants of CWM technology could be developed for different end-users in the future. One concept is to formulate slurry at the mine mouth in association with an integrated beneficiation process. This slurry fuel may be delivered to the end-user by any number of known conveyances such as barge, tank truck, and rail. Slurry fuel would then be stored on-site and used on demand in utility boilers, industrial boilers, and potentially for process heat needs or residential and commercial heating. An alternative approach is to formulate a low viscosity pre-slurry at the mine mouth and to pipeline it for a considerable distance, finishing up slurry formulation near the end-user's plant. Finally, at the other extreme of manufacturing alternatives, washed coal would be shipped to a CWM manufacturing plant just outside the end-user's gate. Depending on fuel specifications and locations of the mine and end-user facility, any of these alternatives may make economic sense. They are all achievable in the near term using existing technology or variants thereof. The Coal-Water Mixture CWMs contain a nominal 70 wt. % coal ground somewhat finer than the standard pulverized ("utility grind") coal grind suspended in water; a complex chemical additive system gives the desired CWM properties, making the suspension pumpable and preventing sedimentation and hardening over time. Figure 1 shows the difference between a sample of pulverized coal containing 30 wt. % moisture and a CWM of identical coal/water ratio. The coal sample behaves like sticky coal, while the CWM flows readily. The combustion energy of a CWM is 96-97% of that associated with the coal present, due to the penalty for vaporizing water in the CWM. Potentially any coal can be incorporated in the CWM, depending on the combustion performance required and the allowable cost. CWMs are usually formulated using high quality steam coals containing around 6% ash, 34% volatile matter, 0.8% sulfur, 1500°C (2730°F) initial deformation temperatures, and energy content of 25 GJ/t (21.5 million Btu per st). Additional beneficiation to the 3% ash level can be accomplished in an integrated process. There are a number of minimum requirements which a satisfactory CWM must meet: pumpability, stability, combustibility, and affordability. In addition, a CWM should be: resistant to extended shear, generally applicable to a wide variety of coals, forgiving/flexible, and compatible with the least expensive processing. It was found that a complex chemical additive package and control of particle size distribution are necessary to achieve these attributes simultaneously, while maximizing coal content in the slurry fuel. Formulation of Coal-Water Mixtures A major consideration in the manufacture, transportation, and utilization of a slurry fuel is its pumpability, or effective viscosity. Most CWM formulations are nonNewtonian, i.e., viscosity depends on the rate and/or duration of shear applied. Viscosities reported in this paper were obtained using a Brookfield viscometer fitted with a T-spindel and rotated at 30 rev/min, thus they are apparent viscosities measured at a shear rate of approximately 10 sec-1. The instrument does reproducibly generate a shear field if spindle size and rotation rate are held fixed. By observing the apparent viscosities of several slurries at fixed conditions it is possible to obtain a relative measure of their viscosities for comparison purposes. A true shear stress-shear rate relationship at the shear rates at which the CWM will be subjected in industry may be obtained using the Haake type and a capillary viscometer. These viscometers are used for specific applications. However, for comparison purposes, apparent viscosities are reported.
