The object of the work reported here was to determine the content of elemental sulfur in gaseous methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and in mixtures of these gases, at pressures and temperatwes encountered in natural gas reservoirs. Sulfur content at equilibrium is reported for pure methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and on three binary mixtures of each of the three pairs of gases at pressures of 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 and 6,000 psia and at temperatures of 150°, 200° and 250°F. In addition, the sulfur content of three ternary mixtures at the same temperatures and pressures are reported. The results indicate that the sulfur content is higher in the gases at higher temperatures and pressures. The content is highest in hydrogen sulfide, intermediate in carbon dioxide and lowest in methane. INTRODUCTION At ordinary pressures and temperatures, the concentration of a nonvolatile material, such as sulfur in a gas at equilibrium, is a function of the vapor pressure of the material and is independent of the nature of the gas. As the pressure and temperature increase, the gas assumes some of the properties of liquids, including the power to dissolve other liquids and solids, to an extent dependent on the nature of both the gas and the material dissolved. At equilibrium, the content of sulfur in the several gases considered here may thus be considered as solubilities which are fixed for a given composition of gas, temperature and pressure. The study of the solubility of elemental sulfur in gases is of interest because sulfur is sometimes present in reservoirs producing natural gas and must be present in the vapor phase. Upon reduction of pressure and temperature, the sulfur precipitates from solution in the reservoir and in the tubing and fittings. Due to the fact that the greatest pressure drop in the reservoir is around the wellbore, the volume of sulfur precipitated will be greatest in this locality and can cause a substantial reduction in the permeability of the formation in this area. As the natural gas flows up the tubing string, the pressure and temperature are further decreased, causing further sulfur precipitation. If the volume of free sulfur is large and remedial measures are not taken, complete plugging of the tubing can occur. Knowledge of the content of sulfur as a function of composition, temperature and pressure will enable the operator to determine what changes in pressure and/or temperature are necessary to keep the sulfur in solution. If the sulfur solubility is large and can be controlled, the operator may desire to produce the well at a high wellhead pressure and temperature and reclaim the sulfur at the surface. The high solubility of sulfur in hydrogen sulfide (5.6 per cent by weight at 5,000 psi and 200°F) suggests the feasibility of recovering sulfur by injecting this gas into sulfur-bearing reservoirs and expanding the produced gas to precipitate out the sulfur. The present project was designed to measure the solubility of sulfur in carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide and mixtures of these three gases at various temperatures and pressures. These gases were the major constituents of the gas well where plugging by sulfur was encountered. A study of the published literature shows no data on the solubility of sulfur in any gas, although Hannay and Hogarth,' in 1880 reported that it was soluble in carbon disdlide above the critical temperature of carbon disulfide. EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE Fig. 1 shows the layout of equipment employed to bring gases to equilibrium with sulfur and to isolate the quantity of sulfur contained in a known volume of gas. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. Griffith in an investigation of the Scranton mine cave problem several years ago; in the course of which we investigated rather carefully the bearing strength of various materials that might be utilized for, the support of over We found that there were no reliable data as to the resisting strength, for instance, of gob pillars or timber cogs or cribs, nor as to the amount of compression that might be expected under a given burden. We made a series of tests at the Fritz engineering laboratory of Lehigh University, from which we, reduced certain conclusions, subject, however, to further test before they could be definitely recommended. Onr study of the subject was later checked by a commission appointed by the Governor of the State of Pennsylvania, to investigate the same subject the subsidence of the surface, and the danger entailed thereby. The State, commission made a series of tests on a much more ambitious scale at Pittsburgh, in the laboratory of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and their tests agreed quite closely with those that Mr. Griffith and I had made. The subjects of this study are two corrosion phenomena familiar to operators of aluminum plants employing Soderberg anodes of the vertical type, namely the sul-fide scale formation observed at the steel contact spikes and the corrosion wear observed at the lower edge of the gas collecting skirts. The causes of these corrosion phenomena are discussed on the basis of observations from practice and measurements on commercial cells as well as on laboratory experiments. It is concluded that the anode spike corrosion is mainly due to the attack by sulfur compounds contained in the anodically evolved gases and that this attack is greatly promoted by cracks and pores in the anode carbon embedding the lower spike ends. The corrosion of the gas collecting skirt is mainly attributed to anodic dissolution of the iron during occasional contacts with the melt. ANODE SPIKE CORROSION The visible result of this corrosion is the formation of a brittle loosely adherent scale on the lower ends of the mild steel spikes maintaining the electric contact to the carbon anode, Fig. 1. The thickness of the scale usually varies from 0.5 to 3 mm, but in some cases scale of about 10 mm thickness has been observed by the writers. During the spike pulling, usually repeated every 3 weeks, part of the scale often loosens and remains in the anode carbon, resulting in contamination of the aluminum with iron. This corrosion has been attributed to reaction of the iron with gaseous sulfur compounds originating from the anode paste materials.'-4 This paste usually consists of 70 pct precalcined petroleum coke with 1.2 to 1.4 pct S and 30 pct coal tar pitch containing 0.5 to 0.7 pct S. During operation the gasification of the anode materials takes place in two ways: First, gases are evolved by the gradual baking of the anode paste added on top of the anode. Due to the sealing effected by the upper semifluid zone of the paste, these gases, containing sulfur compounds from the pitch, are forced downward through pores and cracks in the rigid anode carbon. At the temperatures of the zone of the lower ends of the spikes, 700" to 900°C, the original components of the baking gas must undergo decomposition, similar to that taking place with the production of coal gas, resulting in a gas mixture consisting mainly of H2 and CH4 with small percentages of H2S as the main sulfur compound.5 Second, the anodic reaction results in a mixture of C02 and CO, the total quantity of which is about 15 times that of the baking gas. These anode gases must carry the entire sulfur content of the carbon gasified by the anodic reaction. Henry and Holliday6 have shown that COS is the main sulfurous component of the anode gases from Soderberg cells. Soderberg anodes usually exhibit a network of vertical cracks, frequently traversing from one spike to the next one and to the outside of the block and widening downward to the working face of the anode. In addition the anode carbon, particularly that below the spike ends, is rather porous, as indicated in Fig. 1. It therefore seems probable that the anode gases also may partly penetrate to the spike ends. As the anode is partly immersed in the melt, the static pressure of this must forward this penetration. I) SPIKE SCALE COMPOSITION A great number of freshly extracted spikes from industrial plants were inspected and samples of the scale collected for examination. Before analyzing the samples a thin iron oxide layer, formed by air oxidation of the outside of the red hot scale immediately after spike pulling, was removed. On the average the Fe/S ratio found by these analyses corresponded to I the composition FeSl. oo7. X-ray powder patterns showed no oxide and otherwise agreed with those found by Haraldsen7 for iron sulfide with 50.00 at. Pct

As THE years go by, names of distinguished metallurgists will be added to the list of Henry Marion Howe lecturers, and now and then an illustrious one, for to be chosen to deliver the Howe lecture will be, I do not hesitate to predict, a highly coveted honor. I pray, therefore, your indulgence, if I confess to a feeling of gratification in having been appointed the first of these lecturers. It does not follow, however, that I am losing all sense of proportion and that I have an exaggerated idea of the little I have been able to contribute to our knowledge of iron and steel. Indeed, I fully realize how small were my claims to so great a distinction. I realize, also, that those entrusted with the task of selecting a lecturer were actuated, in coming to a decision, by their knowledge of the long and intimate friendship that had existed between the leader we have lost and myself. For their generous impulse, I thank them from the bottom of my heart; and with becoming modesty, I take up my task as the first Henry Marion Howe lecturer. It would be pleasant and indeed most appropriate to devote this entire lecture to a eulogy of Henry Marion Howe and his work, but how short the time for so large an undertaking and how inadequate my qualifications! On Aug. 28, Sept. 4, 11, and 18, 1875, a series of articles appeared in the Engineering & Mining Journal entitled "What is Steel?" With one exception, these constitute the first professional paper of Henry Marion Howe. That was nearly fifty years ago, three years after graduating from Harvard University. He was then but twenty-seven years old and already his keenly inquisitive mind was actively at work. There is a touch of romance in this young metallurgist who, on entering his. scientific career, destined to be so brilliant and so fruitful, on the very threshold of it, seems to have selected as his motto "What is Steel?" Like a knight-errant of science, he started on his quest for an answer to that question, a quest which was to last forty-seven years and which death only brought to an end. And while thus engaged how many wonderful messages we received from him, each one bringing us nearer to the goal! How illuminating, inspiring and encouraging were those messages! How well-equipped he was to wrench from nature some of the secrets she so jealously guards! How broad his learning and how clear his

The remarks that follow are based substantially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which has been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more- difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in inter- mediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1-1/2%. The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present. Most of the rich, readily accessible placers were mined by our forefathers. Current opportunities exist: (1) in remote areas where infrastructure has been absent in the past, or development has been prohibited by adverse ownership - political or commercial; (2) in deposits that could not be mined by equipment available to our forefathers; (3) in deposits unidentified by our forefathers; (4) where the-price-of-product/cost ratio is substantially better than in earlier years; or (5) a combination of those factors. When I entered the placer business in the late 1930s, and subsequently, a prevailing opinion believed that glacial deposits should be avoided as irregular in mineral content and composition, and unrewarding to explore and develop; yet an operator has been mining a fluvio-glacial deposit profitably for the past 17 years. Rich buried placer channels, of ten called paleo-channels were worked in the last century, generally by hand methods, and under conditions that would be unacceptable today. Exploration and mining equipment now available make some of these channels attractive targets. Well-known examples are in California and Australia. The formation of a commercial placer requires a source of valuable minerals. Above primary deposits, there may be eluvial deposits formed by the erosion of gangue minerals and the concentration "in situ" of valuable minerals. Down slope from these deposits are the hillside or colluvial deposits, and below them are the alluvial deposits of redeposited material. Most of the great placer fields of the world are the result of several generations of erosion and deposition. Well-known examples are in California and Colombia. Gold is a very resistant and malleable material, and gold placers may extend for 64 or 80 km (40 or 50 miles) along a river system. Platinum is less malleable, but is very resistant to disintegration. Diamonds are extremely hard, and (especially gem diamonds) may be found over great lengths of a river system. Cassiterite is less resistant to disintegration, and tin placers seldom extend over two miles without resupply from an additional source or sources of mineralizaton. Tungsten minerals are generally more friable, and within a few hundred yards of the source disintegrate to the point that they are uneconomical to recover. Rutile, ilmenite and zircon placers generally result from the weathering of massive deposits, and may be encountered over extensive areas; most are fine grained and durable. What does a geologist or mining engineer look for in placer exploration? The old adage to look for a mine near an existing mine is still valid. You need a source of valuable mineral. Then you require conditions for concentration, which means a satisfactory gradient and/or other conditions that will permit heavy minerals to settle. Nicely riffled gravel, often called a shingling of the bars, is conducive to placer formation. Coarser gravel is logically associated with coarser gold. Excessive clay and/or high stream velocities in narrow channels can carry gold far downstream and distribute it uncommercially over a large area. When material is extremely fine, in situ weathering and concentration become more important. Placers frequently occur distant from lode mines, and one must remember that in a larger watershed the exceptional floods that occur once in a hundred or a thousand years can move great quantities of material long distances. The carrying power of water is said to vary with the fifth or sixth power of its velocity. I am not ready to disagree with Waldemar Lindgren and accept that many commercial placers are substantially enriched by the chemical deposition of gold from solutions; however, I have seen crystalline gold in clayey material quite distant from known sources of primary gold that is dif-

White Pine Copper Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Copper Range Co. The property of White Pine is about 5 miles south of Lake Superior in Carp Lake Township, Ontonagon County, Mich. The new town of White Pine, adjacent to the company plant, is 18 miles south and west of the town of Ontonagon, and about 55 miles north and east of Ironwood, Mich. A diamond drilling program begun in 1937 to develop the orebody was carried on until 1950. During this period a test shaft, known as the Schacht shaft, was sunk on the orebody and approximately 8000 ft of development drift were driven. In an effort to solve the ore beneficiation problems, considerable metallurgical test work was done on ore extracted through the mine development. This work was conducted in a small pilot plant located in the mill of the Copper Range Co. at Freda, Mich.

The strtcture of body-centered Fe-Ni-C alloys (0 to 16.5 wt pct Ni) containing less than 0.015 wt pct C was investigated by measuring the carbon-diffusion peak at low frequencies with a torsion pendulurrr. By determining the Snoek damping in ferrite and in quenched alloys of identical composition, the effects of nickel content and heat treatment were separated, and the existence of a structure in which Snoek damping is greatly reduced was revealed in the quenched ternary alloys. The relative amount of this structure increases with increased nickel content and cooling rate. It is proposed that this structure may be highly imperfect or tetragonal. In Fe-Ni-C alloys containing only ferrite the addition of nickel (0 to 5.1 wt pet) decreases tke area of the carbon-diffusion peak and shifts its position to lower temperatures but broadens the peak only slightljl. The decrease in peak area with increasing nickel implies that short-range interactions with the nickel atoms prevent some of the carbon atoms from participating in the relaxation process. The shift in the peak position indicates a long-range effect of nickel on the movement of carbon atoms so that at 300°K the diffisivity of carbon in -ferrite is increased by about 35 pct by the addition of 5.1 tut pct Ni. The results are presented as distributions of relaxation strength 072 the activation energy under the assumption that the frequency factor is invariant. BODY-CENTERED iron-base solid solutions dissolve carbon interstitially in the octahedral sites. The occupation of an octahedral site produces a tetragonal distortion of the surrounding lattice. These sites fall into three sets according to the orientation of the tegragonal distortion associated with each and may be identified by their lattice coordinates as: type 1/2 0 0, type 0 1/2 0, type 0 0 1/2. At low carbon levels in cubic ferrite the carbon atoms are distributed at random1 among these sites. In high-carbon body-centered iron-base solid solutions, which are unstable with respect to several two-phase mixtures, a tetragonal structure occurs as the product of the diffusionless transformation of austenite. This transformation is commonly accompanied by appreciable microstrain and its product is called martensite. The tetragonality of martensite, a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron, is maintained prior to decomposition even though local diffusion of carbon occurs as evidenced by carbide precipitation. The tetragonality is taken as evidence that one set of octahedral sites is preferentially occupied by carbon. (This preferential occupation is called ordering below.) Support for this view is presented by the absence of strain-induced carbon-atom diffusion in high-carbon solid solutions (martensite). Such diffusion occurs in ferrite and produces the 40°C internal-friction peak observed at 1 cps frequencies.' Thus, there appears to be qualitative evidence favoring the view that at sufficiently high carbon levels tetragonality arises spontaneously as a result of the ordering of the carbon atoms; however, no experimental evidence exists concerning an equilibrium between cubic and tetragonal body-centered solid solutions. Moreover, attempts to estimate the energy of ordering7-' predict a value too low to maintain the tetragonality observed at medium carbon levels, 0.3 to 0.6 wt pct C. In the present work an attempt using internal-friction measurements is made to establish the presence or absence of tetragonality in low-carbon body-centered solid solutions formed by quenching austenite. Fe-Ni alloys containing about 0.01 wt pct and 0 to 15 wt pct Ni were selected for the study. While the work was in progress Gilbert and Owen10 reported that the transformation which occurs in these alloys during quenching at rates up to 5000°C per sec is not martensitic but is more properly categorized as massive. An investigation was carried out on the dynamic liltration behavior of drilling fluids. In a set-up consisting of a porous pipe through which the drilling mud was circulated, dynamic liltration rates and cake thicknesses were determined as a function of flow rate and filtration time. Eventually, a state of equilibrium was reached; i.e., both cake thickness and filtration rate attained constant values. Concurrently, dynamic filtration tests were carried out in a simple dynamic filter apparatus where mud flow was similar to that in a rotational vismmeter. In both arrangements the relation between equilibrium liltration data and rate of shear at the cake surlace was studied. Filter pipe and dynamic filter apparatus were lound to give identical relations. It was therelore concluded that the latter apparatus, which is suitable lor routine measurements on small amounts of mud, could be used to determine the dynamic liltration behavior of mud under borehole flow conditions. Some data are presented on the effect of filtration pressure and temperature on equilibrium filtration rate and cake thickness. INTRODUCTION In oil well drilling, the drilling fluid used generally forms a mud cake on the permeable sections of the borehole wall while filtrate is lost into the formation. As to the conditions under which this filtration process takes place, a distinction should be made between static mud filtration (mud is not circulating) and dynamic mud filtration (mud is circulating). In recent years several investigatorsl-5 have studied the process of dynamic mud filtration about which little had previously been known. This type of filtration is the subject of this paper which confirms several findings of previous investigators. It differs from already published works, however, in the following respects. 1. It contains a description of a simple laboratory apparatus developed for dynamic filtration measurements on small amounts of mud. 2. The effect of rate of shear at the cake surface on dynamic filtration has been studied. As a result of this study, dynamic filtration data pertaining to the borehole conditions of mud flow can be found from laboratory tests. 3. Some data are presented on the effect of filtration pressure and temperature on dynamic filtration. The work was limited to a small number of muds. No attempt was made to compare data on API filtrare loss with dynamic filtration rates. Previous workers have clearly shown that no correlation exists between static and dynamic filtration rates. EXPERIMENTAL ARRANGEMENT To establish whether the effect of mud flow conditions on dynamic filtrations is governed by the rate of shear at the cake surface, two different types of mud flow were used. In this connection the experiments were partially conducted by means of a porous pipe through which mud was circulated, partly in a dynamic filter apparatus which somewhat resembles a rotational viscometer. In both cases the flow conditions of the mud were well defined, thus making it possible to-calculate rates of shear at the cake surface. The filter pipe was 200 cm long with an internal diameter of 3 cm. Its perforated wall was covered on the inside with filter cloth on which the mud cake could form. Mud was pumped through the pipe at linear rates varying from 20 to 186 cm/sec. The required filtration pressure was obtained by means of a lack-pressure valve downstream of the filter pipe. In this arrangement the type of flow existing in the borehole is reasonably well simulated. The dynamic filter apparatus (Figs. I. and 2) consists mainly of two concentric cylinders with a clearance of about 0.5 cm. The outer cylinder (rotor) can be rotated at rates up to 1,000 rpm. THE observation of the flow layers, or Lüders' lines, produced in mild steel when it is stressed into the plastic range often provides considerable useful information for the study of the fundamental mechanism of the plastic flow of metals. It is a commonly observed fact that as soon as the upper yield point in a mild-steel tensile-test bar is passed, an unstable condition develops in the equilibrium, the load on the testing machine drops and if the surface of the bar contains a thin mill scale, the latter begins to flake off rapidly along certain "lines." These "lines" are in reality traces of wedge-shaped flow layers and are formed by the intersection of the surface of slip and the surface of the bar. The average plane of the flow layer itself has been found by various experimenters to be inclined at an angle of approximately 45° to the axis of the test bar. In a body of more complicated shape stressed in possibly a different man-ner, the tangent planes to the flow layers at each point seem in many cases to be inclined at an angle of about 45° to the principal stress direc-tions at the point. As examples of the latter may be mentioned the logarithmic spirals obtained when a rivet hole is punched in a thin plate, or when a tube is subjected to internal pressure only, etc. Hence if the flow layers are observed from an experiment, the shear-stress trajectories -the curves indicating the directions of the maximum shearing stresses in the body-may then be approximately determined. Since the latter curves form an orthogonal family inclined at 45° to the principal stress directions, the family of principal stress trajectories, or the curves indicating the directions of the principal stresses, may be thus obtained. Although the discontinuous type of stress-strain curve at the yield point is commonly observed with test bars of mild steel, more recent experiments have shown that this is by no means the only material exhibiting this interesting phenomenon. A similar effect has been observed in zinc and cadmium crystals, by Becker and Orowan;1 in duralumin and other aluminum alloys, by Dawidenkow,2 Elam,3 Fell, and others; in copper and copper-alloy crystals, by Elam;5 in brass by Elam;5 in brass wires by deForest;6 in higher carbon steels, tungsten steel, and

In a recent communication14 we have reported on the kinetics of the reactions of zirconium with O2, N2 and H2 as a function of the time, temperature and pressure variables. A systematic study was made and the results correlated with fundamental theories of gas-metal reactions. This paper will present a similar study for titanium. Titanium and zirconium are members of the IV group of the periodic table and possess many similar physical and chemical properties as a result of their similar electronic configuration for the outer electrons. The two metals are relatively inert to both gas and liquid phase corrosion at room temperature. However, at moderate temperatures the metals become active and react readily with the common gases including O2, N2 and H2 which are of interest in this study. A study of the kinetics of these gas-metal reactions is of interest for three reasons: (1) to understand the rate of reaction of titanium and its role in the behavior of high temperature alloys; (2) to understand the practical difficulties of the reduction, refining and working of titanium; and (3) to correlate the data with fundamental theories of gas-metal reactions and crystal structure predictions. Literature Survey Several review papers8 and books4243 exist on the preparation and properties of titanium and its alloys. THE METAL Titanium has, at room temperature, a hexagonal lattice of the zinc type. Hagg19 gives a value of 2.953A for the (a) axis, a value of 4.729 for the (c) axis and a density of 4.427 at 20°C. Burgers and Jacobs6 have observed the transformation of the hexagonal to the body-centered cubic structure at 880°C and have established a value of 3.31 for the cube edge and a density of 4.31. TITANIUM-OXYGEN Carpenter and Reavell6 using a pressure change method have studied the reaction at temperatures of 742° and 1000°C and for a pressure of one-fifth of an atmosphere. The probabilities for reaction are calculated from kinetic theory and they report a value of 10-5 for O2 at 1000°C and 10-6 at 740°C. The titanium-oxygen system has been investigated by Ehrlich.10,11 Five phases are observed. Between (TiO2 and TiO1.90) an alpha-phase, consisting ofarutile lattice, is found. A beta-phase is observed between (TiO1.80 and TiO1.70). A gamma-phase is homogeneous between (TiO1.56 and TiO1.46) and has a structure of the corundum type. The delta-phase exists between TiO1.25 and TiO0.6 and has a sodium chloride structure. From TiO0.42 to Ti the metal structure is observed. The surface oxide films have been studied by Hickman and Gulbransen.20 The rutile structure is observed in the temperature range studied, 300 to 700°C. Three crystalline modifications of TiO2 exist: rutile and anatase which are tetragonal and brookite which has an orthorhombic structure. Anatase is reported36 to exist in two forms: I and II. Anatase II changes to anatase I at 642°C. Anatase I is stable up to 915°C where rutile becomes the stable modification. At 1300°C rutile transforms to brookite which melts at 1900°C. The monoxide, TiO, may be prepared from the dioxide by high temperature reduction with carbon or magnesium. Its melting point is 1750°C. TITANIUM-NITROGEN Carpenter and Reavell6 report that at 1000°C a linear rate law is observed. The probability of reaction is given as 10-8 at 1000°C. Fast12 has studied the solubility of nitrogen and its effect on the mechanical properties of the metal. The crystal structure of TiN has been shown by several workers2'21'44 to follow the sodium chloride structure. However, the calculated density is found to differ from the pycnometric value. This is studied by Brager3,4 in detail. He has suggested that the titanium sites in the lattice are only partially filled at low temperatures. As the temperature of preparation is raised the vacant sites become occupied which expands the lattice and increases the hardness and density. An (a) value of 4.22Å is given for room temperature. TITANIUM-HYDROGEN The solubility and the crystal structures observed in this system have been reviewed in a recent book by Smith.40

New Mexico retained its position in 1938 as the sixth largest oil-producing state, with a total production of 35,510,176 bbl. This was 2,875,598 bbl. less than the 1937 production of 38,485,774 bbl., or a decrease of 0.077 per cent, which was caused by the lack of pipe-line facilities and storage at the pipe-line terminals. The production for Lea County (excluding Maljamar) was 32,926,788 bbl.; for Eddy County (including Maljamar) was 2,225,411 bbl.; and for northwestern New Mexico (San Juan and McKinley Counties), 357,977 bbl. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for Lea County on Jan. 1, 1938, was 65 bbl. At the close of the year it was 49 bbl. The average daily pipe-line runs for domestic consumption were less than the state allowables recommended by the United States Bureau of Mines. There was a demand for Artesia crude for foreign export, which if included in the daily production for New Mexico would be slightly in excess of the daily production recommended for New Mexico by the Bureau of Mines. The daily average production for the year was 97,329 barrels. There were 622 completions in the state, of which 520 were oil wells; 16 hydrocarbon gas wells; 5 carbon dioxide gas wells, and 81 dry holes. Of the dry holes 38 were in or near-by proven fields and the remainder, 43, were wildcats. Five new fields were discovered in New Mexico during 1938, three in Lea County and two in Eddy County. Southeastern New Mexico Lea County.—The Monumcnt field was the largest producing field in Lea County, with 9,440,334 bbl., and was closely followed by the Eunice field with 8,872,335 bbl. The Hobbs field was third with 5,010,414 bbl. The greatest activity in Lea County was in the Vacuum pool, with 129 completions, of which 126 were oil wells and three were dry holes. The Texas Company completed its Corbin NO. 1 in the KW 1/4 SW1/4 sec. 10, T. 18 S., R. 33 E. in August. This well was drilled to a depth of 5118 ft. in a white sand, encountering salt water. It was plugged back to 4315 ft, and pumped 43 bbl. of 36" gravity oil in 12 hr. It was approximately 6 miles southwest of the closest production in the Vacuum

The competitive market potential for solvent-refined coal is estimated and the market advantages are enumerated. Markets are possible in combustion, railroad locomotion, and carbon electrodes. The combustion characteristics are consistent with expected air pollution restrictions on the emission of sulfur and particulate matter. A market potential of sufficient size exists to support the initiation of solvent refining in the United States. The market analysis should help fuel producers determine the advisability of their undertaking solvent refining of coal.

Those actively interested in mining are fully aware of the ever-increasing difficulty of making conditions such that efficient work can be done in underground openings, especially as higher rock temperatures are encountered in depth. This is also true where an effort is being made to cut down the burden of overhead expense by working headings 24 hr. in a day if blasting is done as often as is possible in that time. That the conditions resulting from both these causes have driven the native-born Americans from the mines and that their places have been taken by less efficient foreigners is a fact that we must all admit. The great war now being fought in Europe and the educational qualification clause written into our immigration law by the last Congress will probably limit very materially the supply of labor, such as we are now using in our mines, and will force upon mine operators the necessity of making this work appeal again to Americans. Metal tubing, with blower or exhaust fans, has long been used in supplying air to dead ends where natural ventilation is impossible, or in driving the smoke from such places, or in doing both, as the need might be. Here in Butte we have now come to use canvas tubing very extensively and find that it has many advantages not possessed by the metal. The use of flexible tubing is not new, but it has not been generally used in mining operations. Recent improvements, however, in the canvas itself and in the jointing of sections and manner of suspension have so increased its usefulness that it promises to add much to the efficiency of mining. There is now on the market a product that is impervious to air, is fireproof, and has a system of jointing which permits it to be put up or taken down in a few seconds. In this article an effort will be made to explain the manner in which canvas tubing is being used in the North Butte company's operations at Butte, Mont. The accompanying photographs will, I hope, help make clear what may be done with this material.

THE structural relations existing between cuprous oxide and copper were first systematically studied by Heyn1, who suggested that a study of the microstructure of refined copper might be substituted for the analytical methods in vogue for determining the oxygen content of copper coming .;from the refining furnace. Hofman, Green and Yerxa,2 in their paper A Laboratory Study of the Stages in the Refining of Copper, working along the lines suggested by Heyn, showed that a study off the microstructure could be made to yield a correct estimate of the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under examination. In order to determine the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under examination a photomicrograph was first made. From the relative areas of copper and eutectic, the percentage of cuprous oxide and the corresponding percentage of oxygen were then readily calculated. It was found that the values for oxygen thus obtained corresponded closely with the analytical results. With the idea of utilizing, this method of determining the oxygen content of each charge dipped from the refining furnaces at the Boston & Montana Reduction Plant, the physical testing laboratory was equipped with suitable apparatus for carrying out the work. It may be of interest to describe certain of the methods which have been worked out in, this connection and give such data as have been obtained bearing on the effect of the oxygen content of refined copper upon its conductivity.
