The activities of chromium in solid Cr-Ti solulions contaitning from 10 to 90 at, pct Cr were measured over the temperatutre range 1250" to 1380°C. The Knzudsen effusion technique with direct weighing of the Knudsen cell was used. This was possible because the vapor pressure 0f chromium is about 600 times greater than the capor pressure of titanium so that the amount 0f titanium effusing could be neg-Lected. the activities of titanium were determined by g-raphical integration of the Gibbs-Duhertz equatiotz. The solutio~ls sllcdied exhibited positive deviations from Raoult's law, but they approached ideality as the temperature was raised from 125 to 138t C. The integral free energy of mixing was calclated from the activity values. AF has a maximum value of - 1.66 kcal a1 1390°C and a composition oj 55 at. pcl Cv. The free energy of formation of 'TiCr, is —0.76' lzcal a1 1250°C. The heats and entropies of mixing usere determined using the second law and thus tile mlues could be in error by a considerable amount. The Cv-Ti system is not a regular solution. ThE increasing emphasis on application of various models to alloy formation and solution behavior has led to an intensified interest in the thermochemistry of alloys. In a majority of the cases where different models have been applied the alloy system used was a simple one. However, the amount of data available on more complicated systems is small and in order to fully understand the behavior of metallic solutions more experimental work has to be carried out on these systems. The Cr-Ti system is reasonably complex and even though this system was being investigated as early as 1937 by Kroll,' no previous work has been done on the thermodynamic properties of either the liquid or solid state. This research was undertaken to determine the thermodynamic properties of solid Cr-Ti alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments on the Cr-Ti system were carried out in a water-cooled metal vacuum system. This system is composed of a brass vaporization chamber wound with copper tubing for cooling purposes, a brass liquid-nitrogen trap, an oil diffusion pump, and a Duo-Seal forepump. The pressure in the system is measured with an ionization gage. The interior of the vaporization chamber is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The Knudsen cell is supported by the molybdenum tripod, and a magnetically operated shutter is provided to protect the Pyrex sighting glass against deposition of metallic vapors in the intervals between temperature measurements. Heating is accomplished by means of a 20-kw 450-kc Westinghouse oscillator. The susceptor in this case is 10-mil tantalum seamless tubing which also forms the outside of the sample container. The remainder of the sample container consists Of an im~ervims re-crystallized alumina crucible and a 10-mil-thick tantalum lid. Two holes are drilled in the lid. The diameters of these holes were measured with the calibrated stage of a "Tukon" microhardness tester. The thicknesses were measured with a micrometer. A Leeds and Northrup disappear ing-filament optical pyrometer was used to measure the temperature. This is sighted through the smaller of the two holes in the lid and corrections for the emissivity of the sample were not necessary since the ratio bf cell length to hole diameter was large enough to insure a hohlraum. The pyrometer was calibrated at the ~~t~~~l Bureau of Standards, and the correction for the Pyrex sighting window was determined in the laboratory. For nearly a century, the Corocoro deposit has been renowned among geologists from the fact that it shares with the Lake Superior deposits of the United States the distinction of being the only important copper districts where native copper is worked commercially. The Corocoro district, named after the city of Corocoro, the capital of the Province of Pacajes (Department of La Pas, Bolivia) is situated towards the western edge of the Bolivian high plateau, at an altitude of a little over 13,000 ft. The most interesting part of the district is that immediately surrounding the city of Corocoro, at a distance, by railway, of 65 miles from La Paz and 210 miles to the Chilean port of Arica on the Pacific Coast. The climate of the region is that of the semi-desert, dry and relatively cold, with big differences of temperature between day and night. The rainy season begins in December and ends in March. The cupriferous lodes of Corocoro have not attracted as much interest as the silver mines of Potosi but they have been known for a long time. In the precolonial period the Indians were using the charquis, or natural native copper sheets, to make small brass objects, and the beautiful pale green brochantite of the outcrops as a source of green pigments. During the colonial period, the oxidized ores of the outcrops were worked for copper, which was used by the mint at Potosi for making currency. The native copper ores were neglected because the Spanish miners were at a loss how to concentrate and smelt them. About 1830, work by rudimentary processes, which were improved little by little, was begun on the native copper ores. The total production of native copper in the following hundred years amounted to 100,000 tons. This native copper, which was remarkably pure, was much appreciated on the European markets before the introduction of electrolytic copper. It was useful for making special ornamental brass or bronze and the granular concentrates of native copper, called barrilla, containing 80 to 85 per cent copper were suitable for making copper sulfate by direct oxidation and subsequent leaching with sulfuric acid.

IN the history of geophysical exploration by the electromagnetic method many procedures and types of equipment have been used. Source arrangements for surveying on the ground have included long wires grounded at both ends, large loops laid on the ground, small horizontal loops, and vertical loops of moderate to small sizes. Receivers have ranged from simple direction-finding coils to combinations of coils and a bridge circuit to measure quantities related to both amplitude and phase of the received signal. Primary considerations in choosing a survey method are effectiveness, speed, and economy. In work on the ground in which locating and outlining conducting bodies is the objective, methods using a vertical coil and a simple direction-finder have been found the most satisfactory. Mason1 and his associates applied such a method by setting up a vertical source loop, fed with low frequency alternating current by an engine-generator set. With a direction-finding receiver they surveyed lines along the ground in the plane of the loop, taking measurements at each station of the azimuth and inclination of the magnetic field direction. Deviations of this direction from the normal direction, that is, from horizontal and perpendicular to the traverse line, indicated a conducting body. Recent advances in design of light-weight generating equipment have encouraged using this and similar methods. In 1950 W. H. Westphal and the present writer developed a variation of this method and the apparatus for carrying it out. Their ideas were also based on experience with the Boliden Mining Co. method, which uses a small source coil and a vac- uum tube oscillator. The new procedure uses a small vertical source coil, powered by a vacuum tube oscillator, apd a direction-finding receiving coil. Source and receiver are kept a fixed distance apart and move as a unit along the survey lines. At each receiver station only the inclination of the magnetic field created by the source is measured. Residual deposits occur both as products of weathering and as products of hydrothermal decay. Products of Weathering That climatic conditions affect greatly both the rate and the results of weathering, is shown in temperate, polar, arid, and tropical regions, each of which will be considered separately. Weathering under Temperate Climates The decomposition of any rock is accomplished by the removal of the more soluble bases, and a concentration of the relatively insoluble oxides of iron, aluminum, and silicon. By reason of its somewhat greater solubility, silica is much more subject to removal than iron and alumina. The two important residual end products of weathering are sands and clays, the former consisting essentially of quartz, and the latter of kaolin and limonite.l When such deposits are formed in situ, the sands and clays are not separated, but remain as mixtures, which can be more or less perfectly separated by treatment with water. In such a separation, the ferric oxide or hydrate tends, by reason of its fine state of division, to remain with the clays and silts rather than the sands. While ferruginous sandstones are everywhere common, they are rarely rich enough in iron to become an ore without secondary concentration. Since the silica of these sandstones is completely crystalline quartz, it is much less liable to removal by solution than are the more soluble forms of partly amorphous chert and jasper, which have been removed on so large a scale from the Lake Superior iron formations.2 Moreover, the iron cement of sandstones, which constitutes the chief iron content of these rocks, is often a result of later infiltration, and not of original sedimentation. METHODS and equipment are subject to study in the Butte district at all times in order that advantage may be taken of any new developments that might serve to increase efficiency and lower costs. Detailed time studies of each operation involved in the entire mining process have been of invaluable assistance in analyzing the individual operation for possible improvement. In other words, the fact that a practice has been in vogue for many years does not exempt it from change provided an easier and cheaper method can be found. EXPLORATION Ore occurs in the Butte district in such manner that structures must be drifted on, no matter how small or unimportant they appear when intersected by a crosscut. Parallel structures also add to the crosscut requirements. This prospecting work, which formerly was done entirely by drifting and crosscutting, is now being supplemented by diamond drilling, to aid in greatly decreasing the amount of waste. In long-shot prospecting, or in second or third class prospecting, where the chances of developing commercial ore are not very great, diamond drilling is of particular value. In prospecting where chances of encountering commercial ore are certain or where crosscuts can be used later for haulage or ventilation, drilling obviously is not applicable. Improvement in drilling machines and bits has contributed greatly to the present success of diamond drilling. STOPING For many years square-set filled sloping was the principal mining method used in the Butte district. Later timbered and untimbered rill stopes were used, also some horizontal cut-and-fill sloping where both ore and walls were particularly strong. Because of the amount of timber required for square-set stoping, and the relatively low production per scope unit, experiments with horizontal cut-and-fill scopes were begun in ore bodies of which many had fairly weak walls. It was felt that increase in the speed of the stoping operation, followed closely by filling, to avoid weight being produced by permitting ore and walls to remain insufficiently supported over comparatively long periods, would maintain the walls and backs in safe condition without the use of timber and without ore dilution from wall slough. Cycles of drilling, scraping ore, and filling were devised, which have materially increased stope production and decreased timber consumption, so that both stope labor and supply costs were lowered appreciably without materially affecting grade control. In the larger mines of the district, where wide veins favor this stoping method, half of the total production is now being mined by horizontal cut-and-fill stopes (Fig. I). The increase of the filling rate demanded by the increased stoping rate was the greatest obstacle encountered in the accelerated stoping operations. Finally this problem was solved by replacing the time-honored method of transferring filling waste by small cars, which were hoisted or lowered in the auxiliary shaft, by a transfer

Such are the rigors of climate and topography of western Tasmania, that much of the area has remained uninhabited. The mountains, rising to peaks above 5000 ft high, receive the winds out of the west and precipitate 110 in. of rainfall a year on this coast. The drenched forests have a primordial look with such unfamiliar trees as the tru-sassafras, blackwood, cheesewood, ti tree, and man tree ferns. Prospectors speak of the "horizontals," trees which, in the dense foliage, grow out flat. When the explorer climbs over them he does not come back to the ground but continues forward on dense vegetation with the ground many feet below. Gold was discovered by the intrepid prospectors of the late nineteenth century and stamp mills were erected in the vicinity of Zeehan and Queenstown. At Mount Lyell, mining began for gold in the ironstone capping. The familiar story, of course, is that copper was found beneath the gossan and it was this mineralization that lead to permanent mining operations. Two companies began mining at Mount Lyell and their history from 1893 to 1902 was marked by an unreasonable competitiveness, human perversity and technical difficulties. The North Lyell and Mount Lyell companies were mining copper ores within one mile of each other separated only by a ridge. Each company built its own railroad and harbor. For six years of struggle both companies tried to work out the metallurgical problem which was the key to profit. Although they didn't know it, the two ores were complimentary and could have been smelted together. North Lyell ore was strong in silica and weak in iron, whereas Mount Lyell was fortunate in having a first-class metallurgist in Robert Sticht, from Brooklyn, N. Y., who in 1902 successfully achieved pyritic smelting without the use of carbon fuel.

A description f the geology and conditions affecting the occurrence and mining of oil; also the prospects of obtaining oil in different parts of the country. THE Colombian highlands consist of three parallel mountain ranges (Fig. 1) called respectively the eastern, central, and western cordillera of the Andes. A segment of the range that forms the backbone of the Isthmus of Panama also extends into Colombia, along the Pacific coast, as far southward as the mouth of the San Juan River. These four mountain ranges furnish the key to the varying climatic conditions and vegetation of the country. The river valleys are hot and covered with dense tropical growth. This is also generally true of the coastal plain, although in the northern portion there are some fairly open stretches where cattle are raised and even small districts where semi-arid conditions prevail. The population of this heavily wooded wet lowland depends almost entirely on river transportation for all intercourse. The elevated mountainous plateaus of the three ranges are more open and more generally cultivated; all traffic is by means of horses, mules, and the burro. The canoe and river-steamer transportation systems of the valleys are connected with the highland system of trails and roads by short cross trails and the few short railroads of the country. As these cross trails must pass through the intermediate foot-hill region, where the heavy rainfall reaches its maximum, they are exceedingly bad and the life of pack animals is short. The oil development of the Magdalena River valley is in this intermediate region, between the river and the sierras, north of Bogotá.

DESIRABLE as it is to summarize what has been set forth in preceding chapters, the task can only be approached with great hesitation. What follows represents the personal views of the author at the moment of writing, reserving the privilege to change them on more mature reflection or in the light of further evidence. With that reservation they may be stated somewhat as follows. Education for the mineral industries falls into two categories; general education and technical vocational, using the word vocational not in its usual sense but to signify preparation for specific activities, in which sense a law school is a vocational school. Even at the beginning, as indicated in the first chapter, mineral industry education was partly general and partly technical and that relationship still persists, because technical education requires a firm basis of general education. Our general American system is to provide free public general education through the twelfth grade, or completion of high-school work, though there are already many technical vocational high schools, and even in a community where nearly all the young people are preparing for entrance to college there will be some who wish to qualify for employment at the end of the high-school course, or even on completing junior high. Our educational system, therefore, has not only to provide education for those who intend to proceed beyond the twelfth grade but also for those who, for a variety of reasons, may wish or be forced to cease full-time education at any level between the first and twelfth grades. This study has been chiefly concerned with the problem of what kind and how much technical education to provide for those who have completed the twelfth grade and who wish to make their living in the mineral industries. The original power-plant of the Standard Company has been described* by Mr. T. H. Leggett, late president and manager of the company; but since the presentation of his paper considerable additions have been made, which will be found interesting because of the engineering features involved and of the attainment of a high degree of flexibility with the inflexible, two-wire, alternating system of electrical transmission. Although these additions have been completed during the last year, they constitute, to a large extent, only the carrying out of plans that belonged to the original conception of the installation. The regular operation of the water-power through the winter proved very difficult; there was a considerable length of ditch to be kept open, and, as the stream is small and any freezing night may stop the whole flow of water, there was the .additional trouble of having no reserve to draw upon. The rule for the winter is, that after a night of hard frost water begins to move in the canon before noon on all but the coldest days. To obviate the nuisance of the anchor-ice, and to make available all of the water, a dam of sufficient height to impound several days' run of water has been built across the canon, 3875 feet above the power-house, and provided with pressurepipe well below the surface. In place of the 1571 feet of pipeline from penstock to power-house, there has been substituted a line 3875 feet long to bring water direct from the dam. The dam is of logs, cribbed up in squares of about 12 feet, ballasted with earth and rock and sheathed on the water-face with 3-inch plank.

The experiments described in this paper constitute the preliminary work of an investigation outlined to determine the combined effects of steam and temperature on the endurance properties of certain steels. Essentially of a fundamental nature, it was found necessary, in order to make the investigation comprehensive, to test materials treated to give a wide range of properties. The work reported deals chiefly with nickel steel with one series of tests including nitriding steel. Such a study involves numerous variables, and requires an endurance-testing machine of rather special design. Testing Machines The testing machines used were designed by C. E. Weaver;l they are a modification of the White-Souther and McAdam types. Each was driven directly by an individual 1/2-hp. 115-volt direct-current motor, running at a speed of 2200 r.p.m. Fig. 1 shows the assembly drawing and Fig. 2, a photograph of one of the machines. Specimen B is held by the rotating specimen holder A inside the steam box F, which is closed at the top by a tight-fitting, elliptical cover G. The load is applied to the specimen through the rod D and bearing C. E is an oil pipe leading fromthe lubrication system to the bearing C. The steam, which comes from the power house, is admitted through an inlet (not shown in Fig. 1) at the side of the box, the drain being at the bottom. Steam packings were placed around the rod D and the rotating shaft at H, from which the water was drained by means of a vacuum, which usually showed a gage reading of about 10 in. The temperature was measured by a mercury thermometer, and the pressure by a steam gage. Method of Applying Load After the motor has been started and the specimen as a consequence put in rotation, the load is applied by placing the foot pedal A (Fig. 2) in contact with electromagnet B, the winding of which is connected electrically in series with the motor. Oil-field waters enter into many underground problems with which the petroleum engineer has to deal. Whether the problem is one of infiltration or natural encroachment, it is always desirable to determine the source of the water before commencing repair or remedial work. The usual mechanical tests for determining the source of extraneous water in wells are slow and expensive. An excellent means for the identification of oil-field waters may be afforded by their chemical characteristics when the chemical character of waters from the various sands has been established by careful sampling and analysis cautiously interpreted. In the Salt Creck field, Wyoming, a fairly high degree of efficiency has been attained in the control of field operations by utilizing the information afforded by the analysis. All of the operating companies appreciate this means of identifying waters, with the result that water-sampling has become general practice. Most of the chemical work dealing with Salt Creek waters has been done since the laboratories of the Midwest Refining Co. and the U. S. Geological Survey, were established in the field; the former in 1922, the latter in 1924. A spirit of cooperation has existed between the company and the government personnel by which many of the data for this paper were made available. Sands of the Salt Creek Field The principal sand horizons in the Salt Creek field are the Shannon, First, Second, and Third Wall Creeks, Dakota, Lakota, Sundance and Tensleep. Of these the important oil producers are the First Wall Creek, Second Wall Creek, Lakota and the Sundance. The Third Wall Creek is lenticular and is productive in only a few wells in the southern end of the field. There are also a number of shale wells, but they do not produce water in any appreciable amount. It has been said that "the command of nature has been put into the hands of man before he knows how to command himself," and what we see about us gives particular emphasis to this observation. If this condition be granted, the vaunted boast of school and college, of the institution that had the training of this generation, and of its fathers, and of its grandfathers, the boast that education is a "preparation for life," stands exposed as a hollow claim, or as a ghastly, cynical conception of life, or else education has fallen far short of its intentions. It has been evident for some time that education was not meeting the fullest expectations of society. In recent years there has been a deal of speculation indulged in by both laity and faculty in regard to American education and American civilization, and some few and sporadic changes have been effected. Today, however, there is no longer time for mere hypothetical considerations; we are faced with certain definite facts and confronted with obvious conditions that will not wait for fine-spun theories. If educators do not put their house in order, someone else will do it for them. The trends in mineral industries education must be in harmony with this general realignment that is today visible on the educational horizon, and only as these trends are in conformity with this movement can they be called sound. Two questions, then, confront mineral industries educators: (1) What are the trends in mineral industries education, and (2) how do these trends correlate with the major educational movements of the day? Scope or Mineral Industries Education Before launching into these particulars, it might be well to define the scope of mineral industries education and to consider its present position. Mineral industries education embraces three main types of work: 1. Earth Sciences and Geography.—Geology, mineralogy, geography— courses basic to all mineral industries and to the humanities. 2. Mineral Engineering.—Mining, petroleum and natural gas—dealing with mineral producing industries. Application of earth sciences and all types of engineering to exploitation of natural mineral resources.

The Pittsburgh coal-region, if we regard the greatness of its extent, the picturesque beauty of its scenery, the salubrity of its climate, its relative situation on the Continent, the fertility of its soil, its unrivalled mineral wealth, and its magnificent system of natural transportation, is, perhaps, the most valuable spot on the surface of the planet. Unlike the mythical Paradise inhabited by one man and one woman, it swarms with an abounding population, not living on the free gifts of nature without care and without toil, hut expending its energies in unremitting labor, reinforced by the most elaborate machinery, in the production of everything which mankinds needs or desires; and unlilte the Paradise of story from which flowed the four great rivers of the world in opposite directions, its own four rivers How from the surrounding world into it, to constitute by their union the great highway water-course which divides the Northern from the Southern States. These rivers are the Monongahela, coming from the south, the Yonghiogheny from the southeast, the Kiskiminetas from the east, and the Allegheny from the north. Uniting at the great city of pittsburgh, they constitnte the Ohio, which flows northwest and west, and then south and southwest, toward the Mississippi. The Monongahela has been made navigable by a system of dams and pools the Allegheny was navigable in its natural condition; the KisKiminetas was made navigable by a State canal which has been vacated ; and the Youghiogheny remains unnavigable. Railroads supplement the deficiencies of the rivers, follow their hanks, and share in the transportation for which the waters are not sufficient. Railroads and rivers concentrate at Pittsburgh; other railroads cross the highlands to the east and west; and branch roads ascend the side-valleys and ravines to the mines on the uplands. The whole region is a scene of life; towns and villages dot its surface in all directions ; hundreds of gangways open upon the sides of all the valleys, and deliver coal to trains of cars which move beneath them at water-level; furnaces and rolling-mills abound; hundreds of oil-wells furnish a flood of liquid fuel to pipe-lines

Those who have followed the rapid progress in rock-dusting bituminous-coal mines must admit that opinion crystallized during the year just closed in support of this preventive of coal-dust explosions. Up to 1924 only one mining company in America practiced rock-dusting on a large scale, but during 1924 forty-two companies had adopted this safety measure, and the "boom" is expected to extend over the next two or three years. Alabama is represented by 1 company, Colorado by 3, Illinois by 4, Kentucky by 1, New Mexico by 4, Pennsylvania by 20, Utah by 8, and Wyoming by 1. A total of about 500 miles of entry has been dusted. Illinois leads with 275 miles of dusted entries and Pennsylvania holds second place with about 175 miles. In each case there is a sense of great security, not only on the part of the operator but by the miner as well. It is also interesting to note that during 1924 the compensation rating or inspection bureaus in twelve of our coal-producing states revised their rating schedules so that a credit would be given for rock-dusting. This credit ranges from 10 to 20 cents per $100 payroll. Recent drastic federal and state regulations approved by mine operators made rock-dusting compulsory in bituminous coal mines in Utah, beginning July 1, 1924. Legislative action favorable to rock-dusting may be expected in other states. Colorado has already proposed a change in its laws, and Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, and West Virginia are giving the matter consideration. If the rock-dusting problem is handled properly and proves to be entirely successful, no mining man of any standing will delay applying it in his mine. State legislation regarding this matter may or may not solve the problem. At present, the mining companies that are rock-dusting of their own choice are doing it carefully and thoroughly. In Utah, some are doing it conscientiously, trying to get what benefits can be obtained while others are reported to be doing it only to keep within state regulations. In any event, if we are to have new legislation, it is essential that the various states know what they are about and then, if possible, work for uniform regulations.

A leastmsquare analysis procedure has been developed and applied for the study of the deviations in estimations of oil in place as given by the material-balance equations. The data used were those obtained from field observations on the Jones sand in the Schuler pool, Arkansas, and the Monroe dolomite in the Reed City pool, Michigan. Possible effects of water intrusion were taken into account by expressing the cumulative water influx in terms of various functions previously proposed in the literature. Formulas were developed and values calculated for the minimum deviations and minimal percentage deviations in the calculated volumes of oil in place from the average values, as could be obtained by suitable choice of the water encroachment and initial gas-cap volume parameters. The results show that the fluctuations in these calculated volumes are very insensitive to the values chosen for the rate of water intrusion and initial gas-cap volume, and hence cannot be safely used in discriminating between spurious values for these parameters and such as actually pertain to the producing reservoirs. Moreover, the exact form of the water-intrusion function seems to have but little effect on the fluctuations in the computed oil in place. Accordingly, it is concluded that the material-balance method does not of itself provide a satisfactory criterion for determining the basic physical unknowns of producing reservoirs or in making conclusive decisions regarding the production mechanism, unless independently established geological control data are available for eliminating unreasonable values for the reservoir parameters, even though they may still satisfy the material-balance formulas. If, however, from core or logging data the initial oil in place and the gas-cap volume can be established in advance, the material-balance formulas can be inverted to find the water intrusion. Moreover, by determining by such calculations the water-intrusion coefficient, the iuture production performance can then be predicted by the aid of the materiaI-balance formulas for specified operating conditions. This type of application may be of particular value in predicting the results of Pressure-maintenance operations. Introduction The evaluation of the forces acting upon an oil reservoir is a problem of considerable interest to the operator as an aid in determining the proper method of operation for the reservoir to obtain an optimum recovery of oil. In many pools, the nature and magnitude of the forces acting upon the reservoir remain unknown until an appreciable amount of ultimate recovery is obtained. To be of value to the operator, a reliable interpretation of reservoir performance should be available in the early life of the pool to permit an optimum plan of operation. Progress has been made in an understanding of reservoir behavior and the importance of the different factors involved. IN the manufacture of telephone apparatus a number of nonferrous sheet metals are blanked and formed to produce a wide variety of parts, which are generally small in size because of space and weight requirements. Many are given sharp bends in forming, so that they may be assembled into compact units. This study covered sheet metal of the alloys of brass, phosphor bronze and nickel silver that are most extensively used by our company. In general, the sheets range from 0.005 to 0.100 in. in thickness and from 1/4 hard to extra spring temper in hardness. As many parts function as flat springs, and others require the maximum stiffness for structural reasons, a large percentage of the metal is used in the hard and spring tempers. So, because of the necessity for the minimum radius of bend consistent with the maximum in hardness, there has been a need for information as to the forming characteristics of these sheet metals in the various alloys, tempers and thicknesses. The literature yields relatively little regarding such forming characteristics, so that designers of apparatus and tools have been largely dependent upon past experience or tool tryouts for guidance. In presenting tabular data intended as a basis for selecting the temper of the metal and radius of the bend, we recognize the influence of many other factors which are not covered in this study. For example, the angle of the bend and conditions of the metal, such as grain size and presence of impurities, as well as conditions of the fabricating process, such as rate of forming and adjustment of the tools, may all affect the result. In addition, a bumping operation subsequent to forming, which is frequently used to set the bend, increases the strain on the metal. We wish to emphasize the fact that this is not considered a scientific investigation of the formability of materials or an attempt to correlate forming, characteristics with various other properties of the metals, except in so far as such properties are controlled by commercial limits on composition and temper.

This paper describes an improved acidizing technique which has been applied in acidizing gas wells in the La Gloria Field. Wells acidized in this manner exhibited a much greater increase in deliverahility than wells acidized in the conventional manner. The acid is injected into the well in small slugs separated by a small volume of high pressure gas. The acid and gas are displaced from the tuhing by high pressure gas to reduce the hydrostatic head on the well when the acid is recovered from the well. The well is opened for production as soon as the acid and gas are displaced. This procedure permits a very rapid recovery of the acid which results in large increases in the deliverability of the gas wells. It has been found advantageous in the acidization of gas injection wells to inject the high pressure gas directly after the acid without backflowing the acid out of the well. This practice has made it possible to inject the gas in the injection wells of this field with a much lower pressure differential. This reduces the horsepower required to inject the gas and also decrease:, the number of injection wells required per reservoir. INTRODUCTION The results obtained by acidizing gas wells ill the La Gloria Field have varied considerably in the past. For this reason. a planned study of the acidizing procedure was undertaken in order to obtain more consistent results. The Frio Sands of the La Gloria Field are rather permeable and it was not necessary to acidize many of the wells when they were originally completed. At the completion of an eight-year cycling program in several of the gas reservoirs, it became necessary to recomplete many wells in other reservoirs. It was found that the opan Flow potential of the wells recompleted in different sands was not as large as wells that were originally completted in that reservoir. A study of the drilling records of several of these wells indicated that the sands had originally been subjected to considerable hydrostatic drilling fluid overload while the well was being drilled to the deeper sands of the field. It is indicated that during this eight-year period, the drilling mud and water that were lost into the formation when the well was being drilled had formed a relatively impermeable Eone around the well bore. This impermeable zone around the well bore made it very difficult to obtain high deliverability wells when the original wells are recompleted in other zones. Muskat' has shown that in uniformly permeable and porous formations a zone of partial plugging one ft in radius around the well would drastically decrease the productivity of the well. The analysis for this problem shows that the production capacity of a well is very sensitive to the value of the permeability of the zone immediately surrounding the well bore. This is to be expected in view of the highly localized character of the pressure drop in a radial flow system about the well center. The young metallurgist of today who thinks casually of the technical literature of the steel industry might conclude that little has been published concerning the Bessemer process. This conclusion is true as relating to the last decade or two, but there is a fairly voluminous Bessemer literature in the period of 1860 to 1910. Since that time, however, an entirely new level of metallurgical knowledge of steelmaking has been reached; and the present paper is simply an effort to look broadly from this new level and to bring the recorded history of the process up to date. It is an effort to appraise the acid Bessemer method of steelmaking in the light of today's technical knowledge thereof. In this paper matters of history will be dealt with only insofar as they contribute to an understanding of today's situation. Attention will be directed to the apparent causes of past developments in seeking to perceive the true direction of trends now in existence and effective as bearing upon future developments. The paper will discuss the economics of the Bessemer process, but only to the extent that will bear upon the metallurgist's understanding of his responsibility. The problem of the quality of Bessemer steel will be reviewed and examples will be given of the technical data upon which the reasoning of the paper is based. Matters of engineering design, mechanical maintenance, operation and metallurgical investigation will be surveyed. Comparisons will be made between the Bessemer and open-hearth processes for the sake of clear and ready understanding. Production First of all it is considered logical and informative to show how much Bessemer steel has been and is being produced, and the relation of that production to the tonllage made by the open-hearth process. Table 1 shows the tonnages made by the two processes in representative years. It is to be noted that these figures are in net tons of 2000, lb., whereas previous to 1940 the Institute figures were compiled in gross tons. id open-hearth production and steel going into castings are included, since separated data are not available for the early years of the period covered. INTRODUCTION OF FROTH FLOTATION INTO THE UNITED STATES "The introduction and development of the flotation process have proved to be of such momentous importance to the mining industry of the United States that they deserve to be considered historically ." T. A. Rickard l James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U. S., about Aug. 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Mont., which was then under lease to the Butte and Superior Copper Co.2 Two months later, the Minerals Separation Ltd.. filed suit in the U. S. District Court of Montana against Mr. Hyde char& him with infringement of their Patent 835, 120/1906. The U. S. District Court decided in favor of Minerals Separation Ltd. on July 28, 1913. This decision was reversed by the Ninth Court of Appeals in San Francisco on May 4, 1914. Then the U. S. Supreme Court, on Dec. 11, 1916, upheld the patent on three counts only but restricted it to 'the use of less than one percent of oil.” The Miami Copper Co. was sued by Minerals Separation on Oct. 10, 1914, for infringement of Patents 835,120 and 962,678, and 1,099,699. The Miami Copper Co. was operating under John M. Callow's froth flotation process Patent 1,104,755/~uly 23, 1914. Miami lost this suit in the District Court of Wilmington, Del., and appealed to the Court of Appeals, Third Circuit, Philadelphia. The Third Court of Appeals decided against Miami, May 24, 1917. The case was referred to a Master and hearings to determine profit and damages were not settled until 1923. Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. was sued Sept. 9, 1919, and Magma Copper Co. was sued Jan. 10, 1920. Thus, the first ten years of froth flotation in the U. S. were beset by patent litigation. This litigation suppressed the free circulation of new discoveries or useful information that might be cited in a patent suit against the originator; it accounts for many of the blank spaces in the historical record. T. A. Rickard3 has reviewed the history of flotation and has given the chain of discoveries, patents, and processes that resulted in froth flotation. He has re- ported also on the patent litigation beginning in 1911 and ending in November 1923, when Minerals Separation's Patent 835,120 expired. He comments on
