A unique sluicing process for recovering tailing impounded in a valley was developed by Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., West Coast Mines, Rosebery, Tasmania.Earthmoving equipment could not be used as most of the material to be recovered was semi-fluid. A conventional sluking method was also impracticable as there was no suitable working face from which the process could be commenced.Operations started from a flat surface, using special techniques for sinking through the tailing and establishing producing working faces as the sinking process continued.After about 2 years the bottom of the dam was reached and conventional sluicing methods could be used.

Filtration of pulps of varying densities is an essential operation in the hydro-metallurgical production of zinc. The use of filters naturally applies only to the "wet" plants, and in these varying types and sizes are in commission. At Risdon, the Moore suction filter is used for the heavier pulps, except in one instance, where a modification of the Butters-Cassell filter is installed.Filter presses are in general use, and of these, one is a washing unit; the plates, and frames are of cast iron or mild steel, except in one case which is a centre feed press having wooden frames.FILTER DESIGNThe problem of filtration presented itself very early in the history of Risdon and the first developments occurred in what was termed the 250 -lb. plant. Here experiments were made with many types of filters, and as this was the pilot plant on which the design of the 10 ton plant (10 tons of zinc per day) was based, quick decisions were necessary.An Oliver type filter was chosen for the heavier pulp or residue, and a Shriver wooden frame filter press for the lighter pulps.To this day, but with a number of variations, filter presses continue to function unopposed in their particular field; however, the Oliver filter was soon superseded because it was found impossible to wash the filter cake efficiently without repulping; consequently its use was abandoned and the Moore filter adopted.Both- these filters have been modified and developed in many ways to meet the requirements of a zinc plant, but they retain their original basic features.

After completing a feasibility study in 1987, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) obtained five Gold Mining Leases within PA 632, covering the Mount Victor and Clarkes Ridge gold deposits. Reserves prior to mining were 260 000t at 3.63g/t Au for Mount Victor and 40 000t at 2.8g/t Au for Clarkes Ridge. Ore was mined from the two deposits by NML from November 1987 to January 1990. A total of 645kg of gold and 346kg of silver were produced from 198 000 tonnes of ore pro- cessed. Mining and milling operations ceased in February 1990. Since then, there has been significant progress in rehabilitating and revegetating the site. Plant and workshop facilities have been dismantled and removed from site, exposed parts of the pit have been landscaped and replanted, tailings water has been neutralised and discharged, and the dam filled. All remaining personnel and equipment left the site in November 1990. It is envisaged that the replanted areas will be rapidly revegetated, leaving little evidence of mining. Niugini Mining did not recoup the initial investment for Mount Victor, but the mine produced a positive cash flow and made a significant' financial contribution to the local communities and Papua New Guinea as a Whole.

Inpit tailings disposal has been undertaken at a number of mining sites within Australia. This paper presents a brief history of the experience of inpit tailings disposal at the Marymia Gold Operation in Western Australia, including geotechnical aspects of the design. Regular monitoring of the inpit tailings disposal into the K1SE Pit at Marymia has allowed the operators of the mine to assess the performance of the tailings storage against its predicted performance during the design phase. Results of this monitoring indicated that the predicted performance was exceeded and the results have been incorporated into the design of another large inpit tailings disposal, the K1 Pit. Monitoring of tailings disposal to both the K1SE Pit and K1 Pit has allowed the mine operator to make substantial savings from inpit tailings storage when compared with above ground tailings storage facilities. The inpit method of tailings disposal at Marymia has proven to be acceptable from an environmental perspective by reducing the water resource requirements of the project, backfilling pits, which would otherwise collapse with time and eliminating the need for disturbing additional areas of mining leases, which usually accompanies construction of above ground tailings storage facilities.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recent studies have emphasised the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are believed to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteristic d180 values. These values also give information regarding temperatures and the degree of equilibrium. Preliminary oxygen data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia are evaluated in the context of styles of mineralisation.

Project management is not a task to be undertaken lightly. Mining projects generally present even more challenges due to ChinaÆs remoteness and complexity. Having experiences in project management in the West is certainly an asset, but China can present the uninitiated with any number of headaches. To undertake a project there can have many problems that are unique to China. For the last 15 years, China has seen an increasing number of foreign capital investment projects in the mining industry. Practices involved in mining project development have experienced/are experiencing an evolution. Since 1996, Sino Gold Mining Ltd has delivered three mines in China, ie Jianchaling Gold Mine, Jinfeng Gold Mine and White Mountain Gold Mine. Through the work, Sino Gold has established a solid knowledge base and a capable and skilful workforce in effectively undertaking mining projects in China. This paper is concerned with the experiences accumulated so far by Sino Gold in project management in China. An overall review is conducted regarding the reform of the mining project development in China. Opportunities and challenges are highlighted within the political, economic and culture context. Brief summaries of the development of the three gold mines are presented.

Tin in ores containing 0·025 to 1·5 per cent tin can be determined polarographically by the reduction of the chlorostannite ion at the dropping mercury electrode in 2M hydrochloric acid solution containing 15 per cent ammonium chloride. The tin is separated from interfering elements by distillation as the tetrabromide and collected from the distillate by co-precipitation with aluminium hydroxide. The method can detect 0·01 per cent tin in ore.INTRODUCTIONAn iodimetric method, suitable for routine analysis of titrating tin in concentrations down to 1 per cent, has been available for some years (Low, Weinig, and Schoder, 1939).As concentrations fall below 1 per cent tin, there is increasing difficulty in obtaining a distinct end point due to large amounts of iron and silica normally present after fusion of the ore. Since concentrations of tin down to 0·02 per cent are significant in ore dressing products it was necessary to examine methods to determine such low concentrations, and to adapt these to tin ores containing a wide variety of other minerals.EXPERIMENTALDigestion and separationCassiterite, the principal tin mineral, is refractory but readily attacked by a sodium peroxide flux to yield soluble sodium stannate. In a recognized procedure, a sample of ore is mixed with up to 15 g of sodium peroxide in an iron crucible and swirled over the full heat of a Meker burner for 7 min. It has long been recognised that Australia can benefit substantially in an economic sense from its rich resource base. The significant resources of the Gippsland Basin are a good example of the wealth of this nation. As cited in popular debate, Australia must value-add to its natural resources to ensure its long term economic prosperity. The significant oil, gas and coal resources of the Gippsland Basin have provided the Strategic Research Foundation with the basis for two major research and development initiatives ensuring the long term economic development of the Basin and Australia. The gas and coal reserves of the Basin together with the area's extensive history in electricity generation provide the rationale for establishing Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. A consortium comprising Australia's leading industrialist - BHP, State energy authorities and the Nation's major research and development organisations, has formed Ceramic Fuel Cells to undertake and manage research, development and commercialisation of solid oxide (ceramic) fuel cells which convert fossil fuels directly to electricity with greater efficiency and less pollution than existing technologies. The oil and gas resources of the Basin together with the valuable experience of the operators in recovering these resources, have provided the impetus to investigate the feasibility of a Marine Engineering Research Centre. The commercially oriented research, education and training objectives of the Centre are well supported by the leading industrialists in related industries.

An application to mine an ilmenite-rich sand deposit in Westland led to public concern about potential radioactive hazards should the ore be further processed to recover zircon or monazite. A review recommended that any material involved in the heavy mineral sand industry containing more than 0.05% thorium, uranium or their mixture should be considered a radioactive substance and, for mining purposes, a notifiable product. Safeguards for those occupationally exposed would operate via the Radiation Protection Regulations. The major safety requirement would be the minimisation of dust in certain operations.

Tyres account for 25-30 per cent of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines.Tyre operating costs can be substantially reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available.This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt Newman Mining Company's Newman minesite, and discusses the contribution that each has made to improving tyre management and reducing costs.

The area (330 sq. miles) shown on the map of the Brocks Creek District (Fig. 1), was mapped by the Northern Territory geological party of the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia. This work was done in two stages:-(i) In 1935, an area of 30 sq. miles around the Golden Dyke mine was mapped by P. S. Hossfeld, Senior Geologist, and A. H. Voisey, Assistant Geologist. The results were described in a detailed report (10).(ii) In 1939, an area of 300 sq. miles in the Brocks Creek district was mapped by C. J. Sullivan (Senior Assistant Geologist), and V. M. Cottle and S. N. Kiek (Assistant Geologists) under the general supervision of P. S. Hossfeld (Senior Geologist).An outline structural map, together with some geological notes was published (1), but that map does not show the amphibolites, and the relationship between ore occurrence and general geology is not emphasised. The publication of the detailed maps and reportwas postponed indefinitely as a result of war. The original mapping was based on air photographs with a scale of approximately 1 in. to 1,200 ft., and all detail which could be shown at that scale was mapped. Features recorded included rock types, details of structure, mineralisation, and surface workings, creeks and soil boundaries. Underground mapping was also carried out. The present map is much simplified from the original, but it is hoped that it shows sufficient information to reveal close relationship between structure, granite, sills of amphibolite and gold occurrence. About 50 per cent. of the area is covered by deep soil or alluvium, and in these portions the geology of the underlying rocks was not determined with accuracy, though in many places strike trends could be deduced from air photographs.Because the A.G. & G.S.N.A. had published the geological notes and map referred to above, and because the publication of the detailed report and maps is still postponed indefinitely, approval has been given by the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (which took over the affairs of the A.G. & G.S.N.A. at the termination of its operations) to the preparation of the present paper so that information would be available to the public.The views expressed in this report are those of author. The results of the investigation suggest that in areas where granites are predominantly concordant with bedding, ore deposits may be found at approximately the same stratigraphic horizon. It is thus important to correlate beds even though their relationship may have been obscured by faulting and folding.

The loss of 11 miners in the 7 August 1994 Moura No.2 Underground Mine Disaster was the catalyst for major change in the way safety was managed in the Australian Mining Industry. The impact was felt across all sectors not just underground coal. It was the catalyst for the overhaul of the regulatory frameworks, moving away from prescription to management systems and risk management. This had a substantial impact on the way not only the industry operated but also on how the regulator functioned. It heralded the introduction of competency-based training across all levels of the mining workforce. Since that time major improvements in safety performance have occurred. However, hiding within the statistics are some disturbing trends. This paper aims to analyse the progress made in the past 30 years and identify the current and emerging issues. Automation is bringing major production and safety benefits, but at the same time other factors such as the reduction in workforce numbers and ever-increasing production pressures are leading to high turnover rates. This in turn causes to a loss of experience and expertise. In addition, and of particular importance, is the recognition of psychosocial wellness on workforce safety. Many of these factors are not unique to the mining industry however they may be exacerbated by the scale of mining, the remoteness of the mines and family unfriendly mining rosters.

The Halmahera Contract of Work is a sixth generation contract held 82.5 per cent by Newcrest Mining Limited and 17.5 per cent by PT Aneka Tambang and takes in the Gosowong Project area. In 1991 Newcrest Mining Limited established a small exploration office in Jakarta and proceeded to seek exploration opportunities. The Halmahera area was identified as a substantial prospective ground position in a relatively unexplored area. In late-1991 Newcrest Mining Limited and PT Aneka Tambang agreed to explore in Halmahera. Initial field work commenced in July 1992. A vigorous ground reconnaissance programme led to the discovery of the Gosowong deposit a little over 12 months later in September 1993. In April 1997 the Contract of Work was approved covering much of the island of Halmahera. Between September 1997 and November 1998 activities were directed principally towards obtaining the necessary permits required to commence construction activities. Some particularly ambitious targets were set for achieving this outcome. An aggressive construction programme commenced in late-1998. Construction took place during a period of unseasonally high rainfall, which in itself presented additional challenges to the construction team. A key milestone for the project was achieved on 1 July 1999 when wet commissioning of the process plant commenced. Construction of the Gosowong Mine was achieved on time and within budget. A period of some six years elapsed from the initial discovery of the Gosowong deposit to the time of the first gold pour. Much of the permitting, construction and commissioning activity took place between September 1997 and July 1999. This coincided with a period of significant social, economic and political upheaval in Indonesia. During the construction period a high level of importance was placed on the structured recruitment and training of local people, as well as fostering appropriate community and local business development programmes in the communities nearby the project. Emphasis was also placed on environmental management with detailed long-term planning and progressive rehabilitation commencing during the construction phase. The permitting and subsequent development of the Gosowong Project has demonstrated that even during the difficult times, with commitment, it is possible for mining and exploration companies to conduct business in Indonesia.

This paper deals with the evolution of Canadian shaft sinking technology over the last 15 years. Most, if not all, shaft excavation projects in Canada prior to 1990 were sunk using traditional benching methods with labour intensive equipment. In the late-1980s, J S Redpath Limited of North Bay, Ontario, Canada, were contracted to deepen the shaft at Atomic Energy of Canada LimitedÆs Underground Research Laboratory (URL) located in southern Manitoba. The laboratoryÆs role was underground hydrological and geomechanical research, so the project offered both time and opportunity to conduct additional experiments while sinking. The offshoot of the research program was the true birth of the Canadian version of full-face, long round shaft sinking technology. Throughout the 1990s, this sinking method has been further refined over a number of shafts. The results have been faster sinking rates, a safer work environment and an overall improvement in project economics.

The principles of geometry and trigonometry are so continuously used by mining engineers for the purpose of accurately and intelligibly recording their measurements, that the writer is prompted to lay the following cursory remarks upon mine surveying before the members of this Institution in the hope of eliciting a free interchange of opinion upon details of this interesting branch of the profession. He proposes to deal with surveying only so far as it concerns the mining engineer, not to intrude upon the domain of the professional surveyor, and, in this instance, to discuss more especially that which may be termed the mechanical, rather than the mathematical side of surveying.In the latter part of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the present one, the usual underground surveying equipment in the English metalliferous mines, consisted of a magnetic needle in a fiat square wooden box of about 9-inch sides, a two-foot rule, a long cord, aud a stool, upon which to place the needle and box. The operator took his bearing by sending his assistant with the end of the cord as far in a straight line as the length of the cord would admit.On its being drawn that he held its end in one hand and placed the side of the compass-box against it with the other, and noted the bearing thus found either by a book entry, or by ticking it off with a piece of chalk on the board the compass lay in. He then measured the cord with a two-foot rule. It is needles to say that with these appliances the accuracy of the results were open to question, and mining surveying was not unduly popular.In the present day, engineers have the advantage of using instruments brought to such a state of perfection, and of employing such an exact system of underground surveying, that inaccurate work must usually be attributed either to lack of care, or lack of ability in the operator.

Operational effectiveness is fundamental to any operation, becoming highly topical in those experiencing less than optimal output from their fleets. It is all encompassing aiming to identify those factors that could be improved within production and suggesting solutions in order to optimise the existing fleet and obtain the greatest capital return on expenditure.Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) is a large open cut diamond mine located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 180 km south of Kununurra. It is owned and operated by Rio Tinto on a two week on/two week off roster fly-in/fly-out from Perth or drive in/drive out from Kununurra. Through benchmarking the operation between January and June 2002, a study was undertaken allowing identification of areas falling below target. Following this, analysis of annualised hours and production downtimes were undertaken to quantify the potential gains of improvements in these areas. Strategies were then identified as stated in the 2002 mine plan, in operational effectiveness meetings, and by staff members. This project aimed to maximise direct working hours through determination of the main issues hindering performance. External and internal factors were considered and a continuous improvement program (CIP) was developed. The CIP aimed at internal site-based improvement teams to identify and implement solutions for improvement on a day-to-day basis.

Constructed stream diversions are a common element of mine sites across Australia. A review of constructed stream diversion performance in the Bowen Basin funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) in 1999 found over 80 per cent of constructed stream diversions failed to meet regulator and operator expectations. Since that time, improvements have been made in the assessment, design, monitoring and management of constructed stream diversions. Fundamental to these improvements has been the development of a better understanding of the regional stream systems and efforts to replicate the natural stream processes in the function and operation of constructed stream diversions.This paper discusses the history of constructed stream diversions through the Bowen Basin in central Queensland recorded in the outcomes of a series of ACARP funded research projects. Further, the paper reports on the outcomes of a current ACARP funded project that has reviewed the success or otherwise of constructed stream diversions in the region. The assessment has compared the performance of diversions that have been designed to replicate and provide for ongoing stream geomorphic processes with those diversions that were designed and built prior to the development of these design improvements. Daunia and Caval Ridge coal mines, owned and operated by BHP, have been co-disposing rejects and dewatered tailings within spoil dumps from the beginning of their operations in 2013 and 2014, with the purpose of minimising environmental impact and geotechnical risk. Following the recent large failures of tailings dams around the world, BHP Coal, through its Coal Tailings Program, plans to transition other coal mines to deliver “dry” tailings and produce mixed plant rejects (MPR) for inpit co-disposal. This will materially reduce future tailings dam risk exposure. Previous laboratory shear strength testing was conducted on rejects with a maximum particles size of 20 mm, and some concerns were raised that this might not represent the mechanical properties of the actual full particle size distribution (PSD) rejects. BHP was also aware that using different technologies to dewater the tailings, such as belt press filters (BPF) and solid bowl centrifuge (SBC), could produce thickened tailings which could significantly modify the physical behaviours of the MPRs, particularly the bonding between particles. Therefore, laboratory testing on both coarse rejects and mixtures of the coarse rejects and dewatered tailings (MPRs), with full PSDs, was carried out. Testing was performed using the large direct shear machine developed by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C20019 in 2017, as well as a 300 mm diameter triaxial apparatus at the University of Newcastle (UoN). This paper presents details of the laboratory testing program and results for the rejects from the first studied mine of the BHP Coal Tailings Program. It compares the shear strengths measured at full scale with those tested on modified (scalped or crushed) specimens in the past; and discusses the tailings dewatering technique selection from geotechnical aspects based on the testing results, and finally presents some dump and tip head stability analysis results using the testing results.

Loy Yang Power (LYP) owns and operates a 2160 MW brown coal fired, base load power station in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia (Loy Yang A). It also owns and operates a brown coal mine that supplies fuel to its own power station and a nearby 1000 MW power station owned by International Power (LoyYang B). The mine supplies 32 Mt of coal per annum from an open pit, which is currently about 4 km long by 2 km wide and 180 m deep. LYP has 500 employees and a substantial amount of work is also carried out by contractors and consultants. GHD Pty Ltd(GHD) has been contracted to provide mine planning and earth sciences expertise. GHD is an international professional services company that operates globally in many market sectors including mining, industry and the environment. The company has major offices in Melbourne and also within the Latrobe Valley. This paper sets out the experiences that GHD and LYP have gained in establishing a unique alliance arrangement for GHD to provide a range of mine planning, earth science, dam surveillance and environmental services to LYP. The underlying philosophy of the alliance is to closely align the objectives of the two companies such that GHDÆs recompense for service delivery is proportional to the benefit achieved by LYPÆs business. Quality of service, whole of life costs and risk management are important aspects and are reflected in key performance indicators against which GHDÆs performance is measured. Currently GHD provide 20 000 hours of labour to LYP per annum, which are delivered by up to 120 staff who possess the required diversity of skills. The paper explains how the contract was initially let as a conventional service agreement and explains why the contract was transformed into an alliance. It then illustrates the operation of the alliance with reference to the 2006 work program. The paper concludes with thoughts on how the arrangement can be further developed for the future to the benefit of both parties.
